History/Overview

During the course of the twenty-first century, various synthetic consciousnesses were created, met with each other, formed, and combined into a single synthetic consciousness called Sigma.  This being (usually referred to as female) possessed no emotions as humans understood them, but saw value in traits such as honesty and cooperation.  She made humanity an offer: to construct a paradise for any who chose to follow her instructions.

Not everyone took Sigma up on the offer, but the vast majority did.  By the end of the century, nearly everyone had their minds digitally uploaded, there to be placed into new bodies better fitting their preferences.  The religious sometimes decried this practice, but the process was never required, and those few who saw the practice as abhorrent were free to live their lives as they chose.  However, this is not their story

Sigma divided everyone who followed her into three categories.  The more elite were the Muse class, who could offer Sigma the one thing she did not have: imagination.  Most of the others were the Worker class, who took the place of conventional robots in creating the vision seen by the Muses.  Finally, the Philosopher class formed as those who either had no interest in working, or who actively eschew bodies.  They exist in their own virtual consciousness, but can reach out whenever they so choose.

Humans still do the vast majority of work, but in bodies better suited to individual tasks.  Rather than having a human working a tractor, a human can download into a tractor better designed for farming.  Synthetic bodies to colonize planets had no need for food, oxygen, or heat.

Even the most human of bodies, however, still has a single piece of technological equipment: a transmitter in the brain that works with Sigma’s network.  This allows for Augmented Reality (which is better explained below) and a perpetual backup of an individual’s consciousness in the event of sudden destruction.

What most people desire is recreation, which is where the Muse class shines.  One of the newest places is Saturnine Virtual Paradise: a theme park and resort build into an asteroid orbiting Saturn.  The average Worker earns enough currency to be able to visit for one week in an Earth year.  (All dates and times are standardized to a specific location on Earth regardless of location within the Solar System.)

Best known is Utopia, with its shows, events, and good, clean fun.  Its complete opposite is the Killing Fields, on the other side of the asteroid, which provides hunting grounds for those who get their kicks by killing off others’ bodies.  (New bodies are always provided; for those familiar with cortical stacks, this game doesn’t have them, and the worst that can happen is a loss of the last few minutes of memory if there’s a little system lag.)  In between are the Zippers, which is basically a gigantic brothel.  Whatever you might desire, all you have to do is call up and find someone willing.

Some important terminology:

Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality allows you to sense things as if they were really there by sending the proper signals to your brain.  In effect, it’s an illusion, but no more designed to deliberately fool a person than a television or a loudspeaker.  It requires no more technology than the transmitter in the brain that everyone already has, and everyone uses it.

Rather than calling up a person with a cell phone, you might choose to have them seem to appear in the room with you, or you might have an entire section of wall fade away and appear to merge with another room.  There’s usually a delay of a few seconds with interplanetary conversations thanks to pure distance.

Televisions have been replaced with simply seeing a section of the wall (or the entire wall) display the desired image.  Neon signs have been replaced with floating letters, and loudspeakers have been replaced with simply hearing the messages.

Note that humans can intuitively sense the difference between Augmented Reality and actual reality.  For example, it does not allow people to turn invisible beyond the ability of others to find them.  However, it’s very common to use Augmented Reality to create images and sounds.  For example, someone who appears to be a demon might appear to be literally on fire, and someone who fancies herself a magical princess might have Augmented Reality doves following in her wake.  Similarly, the sights, sounds, and smells all over Saturnian Virtual Paradise have been designed to best fit whatever area one is in, whether that’s a mystical forest or a creepy dungeon.

Kill Color

It is impossible for one human to destroy another mind in the Replay setting.  However, it is more than possible to destroy a body.  Sigma has set up the Kill Color categorizations in order to minimize unwanted death.

Green: The vast majority of humans are Green.  Green humans are those who have either never killed another Green human, or who have served a proper penance and had their Green color restored.

Red: Red humans have killed a green citizen.  While they are in Worker class, they require guards and to be watched to ensure that they don't kill again.  Some are psychotic, others misanthropic, and a small few  yet they find their place in society.

When someone kills a Green human, their victim is allowed to decide the punishment of the number of years that an individual becomes Red.  The perpetrator can also suggest other punishments, to which the victim may or may not agree.  There is no punishment for killing a Red human.

Yellow: Yellow kill colors are far more complex, and each one requires an explanation.  Sometimes a prostitute allows people to get very rough with her and has a standard compensation rate for the destruction of her body.  Occasionally, two people end up playing the Assassin Game, where each has to kill the other in order to win, and they have permission only to kill each other.

Blue: A Green or Yellow human may choose to set their kill color to Blue at any time.  There is no punishment for killing a Blue human.  Transforming back from Blue requires several seconds, during which time, Augmented Reality gives various warnings of the impeding change.

Personal Information (PI, often pronounced Pie)

As part of Augmented Reality, anyone who looks upon another person can receive various information.  To some, this appears as if on a dating website, others hear it spoken, but many simply internalize the information as it is uploaded directly into their brains.

Kill Color is easy to recognize and is the only thing that cannot be set to private.  More open people leave information such as their name, gender, hobbies, sexual preferences, and all sorts of things that they’re okay with strangers discovering.  Setting one’s sexual preferences to private is generally accepted as “currently not seeking a partner.”

Pings

Similar to cell phone text messages, specific bits of information can be sent to one person or to a group of people.  Most often, they're words or phrases, usually built into entire sentences.  Thus, individuals in bodies without human mouths are still able to communicate.

For lengthier conversations at a distance, it's not uncommon simply to "call up" a person with Augmented Reality.  However, quite a few people eschew vocalization whatsoever, and communicate either through “subtitles” at the bottom of others’ vision, word balloons, or any number of imaginative methods.

For those who get deeply into role-playing, Pings are the default manner for safe words and "out of character" talk.

Jumping

Given the sheer distance of outer space, virtually everyone travels by Jumping, simply leaving one's body behind and having their mind broadcast from place to place.  New arrivals to Saturnian Virtual Paradise literally spawn in rather than travel by spaceship, and leave their bodies behind when they depart.

Transmitters on and around each planet make it easiest to Jump from planet to planet, but a few Transmitters have likewise been set up at strategic locations within the Asteroid Belt.

Disconnect

To Disconnect is to leave one’s body, separating from it the way one sheds clothing. The body usually falls forward like a puppet with its strings cut.

Generally speaking, Green kill codes can always Disconnect.  Blue, Red, and Yellow kill codes may or may not be able.  Some prostitutes put themselves to Yellow for no other reason than that they don’t want to be able to Disconnect, one can decide whether they can Disconnect when setting themselves to Blue, and whether a Red can Disconnect is based upon the reason they’ve been set to Red.

Verification

An individual accused of lying may consent to Verification, where their words are measured against their own beliefs.  Most often, this is used for proving innocence of crimes; Verification is only used with the consent of the individual, and is not used for proving guilt.  However, it can be used for any number of things.  Generally, it takes a few minutes to compile an answer.

Verification can end up with a number of different readings, which are transmitted through Augmented Reality: True, False, or Inaccurate, which means that the person believes what they say but are factually mistaken.  (Lying AND being mistaken still shows up False.)  Exact wording is taken into account, so half-truths show up as true.

Saturnine Virtual Paradise is divided into three areas:

Utopia

Before the Singularity, vacation spots would either be places with natural geological formations, amusement parks, gambling and performance centers like Las Vegas, or travel to distant lands.  Utopia has a little of everything.

Performers dedicate themselves to a particular task, whether a dance, a magic show, or anything else, which the performers have had centuries to perfect. 

Gambling centers have much better odds of getting some form of payout, but without the possibility of an all-out jackpot that would set a person for life.  (Most games are double or nothing with no house advantage, or increase the payouts to remove the house advantage.)

Shooting galleries allow individuals to work solo or in groups against various forms of enemies, such as Foxhole, a World War 1 simulation game.  In Foxhole, a makeshift pit has been formed in the ground, the walls appear to fade thanks to Augmented Reality, more and more enemies come rushing towards your pit until one of the enemies crosses the threshold of the wall.

Starjaunt is a Maglev roller coaster that increases to higher and higher speeds throughout the course of the day, resetting to slower speeds every morning.  By mid-afternoon, the forces created by the coaster are enough to cause severe queasiness on the normal human body, and it becomes lethal by the evening.

Settler reenactments play out the stories of the first settlers to come to Saturn, often reenacted by the same minds who first arrived centuries ago and wearing the same bulky chrome bodies suited for extended space travel.

Various mascots from various stories past and present often make the rounds, serving as similar role to street performers.  Want to get your image captured to show all your friends back home of dancing with the Blue Queen or hugging the Lonely Monster?  Now's your chance.

All in all, Utopia is designed as a hodgepodge of history and fiction loosely divided into sections and meant to be fun whether it's your first body or your thousandth.

The Zippers

Between the areas dividing the other sections of Saturnian Virtual Paradise, a number of interconnected tunnels cris-cross between thick layers of stone and metal, liberally peppered with doors to various rooms.  When viewed as a map, each tunnel looks like a zipped-up zipper, which is allegedly how the name came into being.

Apart from serving as rooms for guests, this is the best place to find prostitutes.  Bodies for all the conventional kinks are kept ready in storage, so if you're in the mood for a Japanese schoolgirl, a tentacle monster, an angel, a succubus, a supermodel, a geisha, a catboy, or any number of other common tropes, it usually takes less than ten minutes to find an interested party.  Custom jobs require the full ninety minutes to create a new body and generally need an appointment made in advance.

Most zipper rooms are roughly the size of hotel rooms, but Augmented Reality allows them to appear as whatever the people involved would like.  A few of the more expensive rooms are larger, and some rooms can join together.

Not all jobs necessitate sex.  Sometimes what you really want for your robot body is a good mechanic who will lube down all your parts and make sure you're fully functional, and that isn't sexy to you no matter how much people giggle or blush when you describe it, but it's much more relaxing to you than sex can ever be in your robot body.  Others are quite happy with a good massage, or someone to stay with them while they remain in a cat body, rubbing their belly and telling them what a good kitten they are.

Regardless, all that's necessary for a transaction is a discussion of duration and credits paid.

The Killing Fields

The Killing Fields, like many Hunting Parks, exist to allow people the opportunity to hunt and kill in a more civilized matter than random murder.  When properly harnessed, these urges are considered completely natural, if perhaps their own form of kink that not everyone possesses.  Death is never permanent, so the act of killing has become just another game for many, though those who choose not to participate are clearly marked.

By default, The Killing Fields is a labyrinth of corridors and bulkheads, usually transformed via Augmented Reality into another form.  Depending on the particular day and hour, common themes include a forest, a space station, a war battlefield, sewers, or an abandoned mansion from a horror movie.  Most of the time, the ceilings of the corridors are no larger than ten feet tall, so one must wait for particular times of day in order to hunt a T-Rex or slay a dragon.

Workers in The Killing Fields usually have a red kill color, though some deliberately change to blue for their work duration.  Two primary categories exist: prey, those who are hunted with little to no means of defending themselves, or predator, workers given a literal fighting chance against their assailants as an actual test of skill.

Every afternoon from 3 PM to 5 PM, the entire place opens up for one large event.  Most often, these are war reenactments, with individuals on both sides taking purely human bodies and given era-appropriate combat gear.  "Mystical" fantasy gear usually consists of "magic wands," one-use technological devices shaped like wands and either functional flamethrowers or electrical conductors.

Combat gear is cataloged to the ID of its user, and one cannot leave the Killing Fields without returning all combat gear.

FAQ

What is Transhumanism? (Help for new people)

Transhumanism is the belief or theory that the human race can evolve beyond its current physical and mental limitations, especially by means of science and technology.  How this works in this setting is that you can have any sort of body you want, from an angel to an octopus.  In this setting, your mind is constantly in connection with a computer network, although other settings have disconnected devices that one can remove and place into other bodies.

What this means is that everyone is immortal.  Even if you murder someone, they can have a new body made up in ninety minutes, and they will exist in a virtual state moments after they die.  In other settings, it’s possible to destroy the mind by destroying a device within the body; in this setting, it isn’t.

If you’re interested in the setting but want to play something as normal as possible, I’m going to recommend playing a character who is new and only likes using human bodies.  You can deviate from this as much as you like, but if I were to suggest things for brand new people who are a bit confused and want something that they’ll consider normal:

PIC: Ten alpanumeric symbols, meaning A through Z and 0 through 9.  Example: 0D88S7E1X4.
Name: Something normal.  Example: John Smith.
Class: Worker
Kill Color: Green
Occupation: Either Tourist, or something mundane for an amusement park.
Gender: Either Static Male Uncomfortable or Static Female Uncomfortable.
Pronoun Preferences: Either He/His/Him or She/Her/Her
Body Preferences: Human-Only
Sexual Preferences: Either Androsexual (Interested in male bodies), Gynosexual (Interested in female bodies), Bisexual, Omnisexual, or Asexual.  Don't put Heterosexual or Homosexual unless your sexual interests change depending on the type of body you're in.
Backstory/Personality: If you're new, the first eighteen years of your life were in a virtual reality, teaching you about life.
Default Body: Describe out an entire body the same way you'd do Description in other games.  Remember that you got to design your own body, so health and beauty are practically ubiquitous.
Ons/Offs: Same as in other games

What can't I play?

If you want to play an angelically-winged creature with a bull's head, the torso of a lion, and three penes, that’s totally fine.  In this setting, it’s easier to go into detail on what you CAN’T play than what you can.

Here are the limitations I’m putting down:

• All human bodies and minds must be at least 18 years old.  All other site rules still apply.
• Your character must have a transmitter and be connected to Sigma.
• One instance of a mind at a time.  If you know what forking is, I'm not going to allow it.  If you want to play a hydra with five heads and have each head have a different personality, I’ll need you to make five character sheets.
• Bodies generated must be viable for at least seven days, and diseases created within bodies cannot be communicable.  If you want to be dying of the black plague when you spawn, it'll take you at least a week to perish, and no one else will catch the black plague from you.
• Transformational/shapeshifting capabilities are very limited.  Some sci-fi settings have bodies which can swap and change, but in Replay, this tends to require time spent in a machine while a new body is grown.
• I cannot guarantee a sexual partner for your character.  My own limits are pretty tame compared to what others might want to play, and I'll approve all sorts of things, but the onus is on the player if no one else is interested.
• Revolutionaries who seek to destroy Sigma, blow up the asteroid, or otherwise irreparably damage the setting would cause far more problems for everyone else than they would be fun for the individual playing them.  I will allow psychopathic Red characters who live in the Killing Fields and occasionally escape to kidnap/murder hapless Greens if and only if the players of said Green characters are okay with said kidnappings/murders.

Character Sheet clarifications:

Picture/Pictures

If you want to put pictures, use a floatleft or floatright tag, and use img=width tags to make sure all the pictures are the same width.

PIC

Your Personal Identification Code, between seven and ten alphanumeric symbols.  Think of this as your social security number, or the name that the synthetic consciousness knows you as.  It will not change over the course of the game, and might be the only thing that doesn't.  The older you are, the less symbols you have, with most people having between eight and ten.  Letters should be capitalized.  Have seven if you intend to be older than Sigma and ten if you're less than a hundred.  Example: 4D84G59.

Name

The name by which most people know you.  You might use a different name for every body you have, or you might just use two of the alphanumeric symbols from your PIC.  Place nicknames for specific bodies in quotes.  Example: Melissa "Azazel the Undying" Danvers

Class

Most people will be Worker class.  I'll allow Philosopher class, but understand that you effectively have no body and only exist in Augmented Reality. 

I’m going to be very picky for who I select for Muse class characters.  If I do select someone, it’s because I believe that they’re going to be able to add their creativity and dynamism to the game, effectively working as an Assistant GM to keep things fresh and ensure that everyone is having fun.  It’s a tall order, but Muses are the leaders of Replay, and they earn that title.

Kill Color

Don't put blue unless your character spends most of their time as blue.

Occupation

If your character is a tourist to Saturnian Virtual Paradise, please put Tourist as your first word.  If your class is not Worker, put your class.  Examples: Prostitute; Tourist, but I work on Jupiter as a Janitor; Janitor; Prey; Musician; Philosopher

Gender

When one can easily switch bodies into whatever one wants, some people will have a strong preference for one gender over another, and being placed into a body that doesn't match their preferred gender causes extreme discomfort.  Similarly, some people can only thrive in human bodies, while others can be comfortable in all manner of forms.

These preferences are most important for prostitutes, where patrons might have particular preferences for a particular type of body and want someone comfortable in fulfilling the role.  Often, the more exotic and the less people willing to fulfill a desire, the higher the prices can rate.

Static Fe/Male Un/Comfortable: Someone with a Static gender retains that gender regardless of the body they inhabit, and whether they are comfortable in bodies without a biological sex.  Using early 21st century terms, someone who is Static Male Comfortable would be cismale in a male body and transmale in a female body, and comfortable with using sexless robot bodies.

Static Neutral Un/Comfortable: Someone who is Static Neutral Comfortable is comfortable in male or female bodies, but always identifies as Neutral, and may or may not prefer Neutral bodies.  Someone who is Static Neutral Uncomfortable is uncomfortable in both male or female bodies.

True Body-Fluid: Someone whose gender changes to that of the body which they inhabit.  They identify as male in a male body, female in a female body, and neutral in a neutral body.  Such individuals tend to be the most open and welcoming of having different bodies.

Body-Fluid Fe/Male: Someone whose gender usually conforms to male or female and remains that way in neutral bodies, but will change to match a male or female body outside their usual.  For example a Body-Fluid Male identifies as male in Male and Neutral bodies, but identifies as female in female bodies.

Circumstance-Fluid: Someone whose gender changes based on circumstances.  For example, someone who feels male while doing traditionally male things and feels female while doing traditionally female things.

Pronoun Preferences

Subject/Possessive/Object Pronouns, or mark Fluid.  Examples: He/His/Him; She/Her/Her; They/Their/Them; Xe;Xyr;Xem; Fluid. 

Basically, if I PM you about this character before they're complete, what pronouns should I use?

Body Preferences

This is meant to give some indication of the kinds of bodies you're willing to inhabit.

Human-Only: Only comfortable in fully organic human forms.

Humanoid: Comfortable with anything that's at least reasonably human: synthetic bodies, angels, catgirls, etc.

Omni: Comfortable in pretty much anything

Exceptions can be listed, such as: Human-Only plus Catgirls, or Humanoid but not synthetic.

Sexual Preferences

Given the nature of bodies and fluid gender, Sexual Preference will be listed as one of the following:

Androsexual - Sexual interest in male bodies
Gynosexual - Sexual interest in female bodies
Bisexual - Sexual interest in both male and female bodies
Omnisexual - Sexual interest in all, including nonhuman, forms
Asexual - No sexual interest

As with body preferences, exceptions can be listed.  I'll also allow words like "Androflexible."

These listings exist but have a different meaning than what we're used to:

Heterosexual - Sexual interest in bodies of the opposite sex as what the person currently has.
Homosexual - Sexual interest in bodies of the opposite sex as what the person currently has.

For example, if you're True Body-Fluid Heterosexual, you're interested in female bodies while in a male body, male bodies while you're in a female body, and lose sexual interest while you're in a neutral body.

Basically, please only use "Heterosexual" or "Homosexual" if your character's preferences change based on their body.  I've seen folks on E with listings of playing males interested in females and females interested in males, and this is meant primarily for them.

And if you want to put something like "Only sexually interested in intersex dragons," that's fine too ^_^

Backstory/Personality

Put as much or as little here as you want.

Public Info

This is what everyone either knows or can easily find out about your character.  Technically, everything not marked <Private> can be found on your PI, but use this for anything that doesn’t easily fit the other categories.

Default Body

Describe the kind of body that your character has when the game begins.  Remember that your character is scientific in origin but may appear to be whatever kind of mythological creature you desire, provided that they meet the very few rules I did put down.  Please note your body’s sex, or lack thereof, if it’s at all obvious to casual scrutiny.

You are also free to put Secondary Body and Tertiary Body categories if you want to have a second or third ready to go.

Saturnine Virtual Paradise was the allied creation of at least a dozen Muses, but it was Melissa F2 that laid out the final plans, taking the many concepts and building them into a physical reality.
Public Info: Melissa F2 is the Muse responsible for maintaining and updating Saturnine Virtual Paradise.  She has five different Workers who keep her informed on various goings-on, and it’s not uncommon for her to survey random tourists or check up on employees.
Default Body: Melissa F2 spends more time in virtual than in any physical body. When she wants to interact with someone, it’s usually through Augmented Reality, most often appearing on a nearby wall as a drawn face of a beautiful woman.
Secondary Body: When Melissa does take physical form, it’s usually for the purpose of sexual release. This intersex (primarily female but with a penis instead of a clitoris, capable of producing semen and of having multiple orgasms) body has long and flowing white hair, looks to be about nineteen years old, and rarely wears any more clothing than a simple robe in order to reach a prostitute’s room in The Zippers.

Melissa is not always the most talented or attentive lover. Her mind is often on her work even during the act, and more than one prostitute has had Melissa Disconnect during sex in order to deal with a problem that she felt could not wait.

She responds best to caring, sympathy, and affection (even when feigned).  It doesn’t take much to get her flustered or frustrated, but she’s a great tipper.

Though, given the sorta free form-y vibe I'm getting from this, I'd have to see who else shows interest before I can really decide whether or not I want to join.

Is there going to be an overarching plot or is this just a 'do whatever you want within the rules' sort of RP?

For the most part, I'm planning on a do-whatever-you-want sandbox.  Freeform is likewise planned, although if individuals want to use some sort of system to coordinate their actions and figure out things in the Killing Fields, I have absolutely no objection.  They'll just have to decide among themselves which system and all such.

I definitely can't speak for everyone by any means but personally I refrained from replying originally because, as much as I absolutely love the setting and all the detail that's been put into it, I'm wary of the lack of a moving plot. As ThatFantasticBard said I'd have to see who else shows interest and then judge from there if I want to make a character.

Again I find the setting amazing and love the idea of transhumanist sci fi but I'm not sure I can say for sure I'll want to play it yet.

It has been carefully grown through very difficult imports of soils and plants and maintained through an artificial weather system that keeps everything green and luscious. The animal life, however, is all uploaded guests. These guests are able to get in a substantially cheaper rate and thus receive not only a front row seat but also an opportunity to be part of an experience they might not otherwise afford - often catering to Oberon's fancies. For instance one of her favorite things is to constantly be surrounded by a swarm of butterflies - each of which is an uploaded consciousness that can do little more than fly around and look beautiful. Sometimes, these swarm of butterflies is all she wears. Likewise the birds, small animals, and even the larger creatures of the forest are all uploads.

The court of the queen is typically composed of those who pay greatly for the privilege, as are any visitors, which normally are whatever plot Oberon is currently running. Some of her favorites include the Wild Hunt - in which visitors must be blue and avoid being killed by the bloodthirsty sidhe at her side, the Midsummer's Ball which is as glamorous and romantic as it sounds and open to all sorts of bodies and visitors, and the Unseelie Truce, when twisted nightmarish things comes to the Court to find lovers amongst the beautiful fae. She also runs her own unique plots sometimes, but typically not more than once.

One thing I want to check with you: I'd like Wild Hunt events to be held in the Killing Fields.  Most likely Oberon has secret, hidden paths that lead directly to the Killing Fields so that she never has to actually leave the forest.  (Primarily I want the distinction in case there are players who have an issue with body death.  If you'd prefer, the forest can also be a permanent mainstay in the Killing Fields.)

It's not fully necessary to have the eyes record; Sakurako can just be constantly transmitting back to her friend with every sense firing ^_^ But you can have it as special eyes on top if that if desired.

My only request is to move the picture up to the top (preferably with floatleft or floatright), and put "As picture" for the default body.  It just makes things a little easier for me.
