In an Alternate Earth

Sentinels and Guides – For as long as they have existed, one has needed the other to survive and function. Life as it has come to be known and understood has always heavily relied upon the guardianship and protection brought to it by the natural relationship existing between these to. Sentinels protect, Guides nurture, and wars are fought and won by the frightening militia force formed when using both. The same wars fought by these two would lead to the creation of a horror – The Empathy Bomb – that would eradicate thousands of Guides in an instant. Numbers, once high, dwindled. Now Guides are rare and Sentinel outnumber them a hundred to one.

The Tower oversees all Sentinel and Guides within their district, carefully policing them and their actions. Now, in a time of quasi-peace, bonded pairs are not consistently required for the military and Sentinel and their Guides may pursue different occupations. Some choose to become Hunters. Others police. Some choose to remain with their passion for the military or medical sciences. The world, and the options, are endless.

Life goes on, but always under the watchful eye of the Tower.

Will you, Sentinel, manage to find your Guide and bond? Guide, will you come out of hiding and accept your calling to be at your Sentinel's side? Or will either of you choose to aid in the fall of the oppressing presence of the Tower that controls your lives?

And what of you, Normal? You who are neither Sentinel nor Guide, but merely the average. Will you support the Tower, who has always protected you? Or will you side with the Rogues whose words are beginning to make sense?

The choice is yours.

Welcome to London, and enjoy your stay.

So What's it About?

Broken Bonds is essentially a game vaguely inspired by the television show The Sentinel that aired on UPN from 1996 until 1999. If anything, this game has been heavily influenced by the Alternate Universe work that has been constructed around the original idea. Don't know diddly about the show? That's great. Come play. It literally won't change a thing.

What you have at the core of this idea is pretty simple – There are three classifications of people (Sentinel, Guide, and Normal) that are open for play to potential players. What you need to know up front is that Sentinel have heightened senses, Guides calm their nerves through Empathy, and Normals are on the side living their lives as best they can in the midst of all this. The ever-looming figure in all three lives is the presence of the Tower, the facility that serves as Government and Military and oversees the training of Sentinel and Guides, and may be considered a headquarters of sorts.

Sentinel need Guides to survive - there is no getting around that. Guides provide their Sentinel a stability of mind, improved control over their heightened senses, and calm the bestial instincts that may otherwise take over in an Unbonded Sentinel. In this game, there is a distinctly low number of Guides turning themselves in (they are required, much as Sentinel, to turn themselves over to the Tower when they turn eighteen) and that is a big problem. Thanks to the Empathy bomb, the birthrate of Guides to Sentinel is about 1 to 100, so the need for Guides to be found and Bonded is significant. Un-bonded (meaning they have no Guide who is theirs and theirs alone) Sentinel are often sent on “Hunts” to claim these rogue Guides and bring them back. Sometimes rather forcefully...

And, of course, there is the undercurrent of resistance and rebellion against the Tower and its overarching Government to deal with. . .

This game, due to possible content, is located within the NC-Large Group section of Elliquiy. The Bonding aspect of Guides and Sentinel may not always go as predicted and may hold an undercurrent of Non-Consent to it. It may. I am not guaranteeing that it will. This is something that the two players must work out amongst themselves.

Rules & Regulations

The following are the rules and regulations set for Broken Bonds. Please read these thoroughly and understand that by applying it is implied that you understand what you have read and commit to it. While we attempt to keep these rules stagnant throughout the course of the game, if something begins to pose a problem we will make a rule about it and enforce it.

Disclaimer : We reserve the right to add rules as necessary.

  • Be excellent to one another. Do not fight. Do not squabble. If an altercation between players occurs, please bring the matter to myself or your residential Co-GM who will periodically patrol the thread for me when I cannot. He and I will be perfectly happy to sort out the discrepancy between the players and arrive to the most fair and just solution allowed. Do not turn us into a broken family.
  • Do not God Mod another player's character! Due to the nature of the characters it is easy to accidentally cross into this territory. Please do not control their actions. YOU control YOUR character. On that same tangent please do not make yourself invulnerable to everything. Nothing more boring than a “perfect” character.
  • NO PLAYER CHARACTER MAY BE KILLED WITHOUT PLAYER'S EXPLICIT PERMISSION TO DO SO. There is no leeway to this rule. Don't do it.
  • Never, EVER do something to a player's character they do not like. Consult with the player before making a decision that you think might be a bother to them, even if they list it as okay in their Ons and Offs. Communication is paramount between players! Please use it.
  • Communication is important. If you are going to be gone longer than a day or two, please try to notify the GMs. We are very understanding about outside life – Trust us. I, myself, am a Full-Time student and the Co-GM works Full-Time as well. We are busy and sometimes it gets hectic. Everyone has lives. That is okay. But let us know so we're not missing you.
  • You are not expected to post once a day. While it isn't expected of you, more posts are undoubtedly appreciated by your fellow players. However, if you know you are getting ready to leave for a week, we ask that you try not to get your character wound up in a plot that is going to change things drastically. That will bog all players and prove to be quite a pain. We ask that all players post, minimum, once a week. A single post within seven days isn't so bad, is it? Quicker is always better and preferred, though.
  • Please have a good grasp of the English Language and Grammar Structure before applying. We fancy individuals that use complete sentences, full thought, and detail their posts with enough for another character to react to. I am not tying certain post lengths to this game, but I beg you not to use one to three line posts. That would be VERY difficult for another player to react to. Use your best judgment, but give enough for the players to respond to. Multi-Paragraph is best. Remember, a paragraph is a construction of thought usually ranging between three to five sentences.

Original Version of Broken Bonds was implemented, coded, and created by Faustus, as inspired by The Sentinel and the fanfic "Chameleon" by Velvetmace. Credit for 95% of this awesomeness lies with Faustus.

On Sentinel and Guides
Please refer to the tables below for more detailed characteristics of Sentinel and Guides.

Sentinel : Characteristics, Statuses and Suggested Careers
  • Characteristics
    • Heightened senses – All five work in overdrive. It is not advised to use all senses at the same time as overload, referred to as Zoning, is easy to occur, especially without the presence of a Guide. Senses are comparable to animalia in strength.
    • Greater reflexes – Sentinel will react faster and stronger than their average counterpart as their bodies are better equipped to handle the stress.
    • Have spirit animal – While it may not always be visible, and is invisible to a Normal, the spirit animal is often present in their lives. It may serve as an aid but will often have difficulties interacting with the tangible world. Exists as an animal representation of the individual.
    • Higher aggression rates and possessive tendencies – A Sentinel is more in-tune with their “animal” nature and may behave in a territorial manner that an animal might. Scent marking is especially common to state their territory to other Sentinel, primarily due to their heightened sense of smell.
  • Statuses Available
    • Bonded Sentinel – Has a Guide that they have bonded with. More level-headed than their Un-bonded counterparts, but has the downside of going everywhere with their Guide. Higher on the status chain.
    • Un-Bonded Sentinel – Has no Guide to call their own. Will often be more aggressive and hot-headed. These sort will often compete with one another over a Guide, given the chance. Usually not as calm and collected as their Bonded comrades. Lower on the Sentinel hierarchy.
    • Rogue Sentinel – The most feared of the three types, as the Tower has no control over them. May be Bonded, Un-Bonded, Calm, Aggressive. . Who knows? This sort has turned away from the Tower and participate in the Rebellion against it, while actively avoiding the Hunters sent out to pick them back up.
  • Suggested Jobs and Careers Available
    • Head Guide Hunter – This Sentinel has risen their way to the top through hard work and proved themselves in-touch with their senses to a frightening degree. They spearhead all of the Hunts for Rogue Guides (and sometimes Sentinel) and work closely with the Matchmaker when they are brought back. Virtually the head of the Tower. In many Towers, the Head Guide Hunter and the Matchmaker are Bonded.
Positions Available : 1 Position Filled
    • Military – As the title implies, this Sentinel serves the military portion of the Tower. They may be training to go to the front line or they may be back at the Tower to work on a Hunting Squad. Not to be confused with the Police Force for the Tower.
      Positions Available : Unlimited
    • Police Force – Functions exactly as one would expect the police to except they follow Tower rules to a fanatical degree. These Sentinel are often the ones that get the first tip off about Rogue Guides or Sentinel and will alert the Tower to their presence for a Hunting Squad to be sent. Detectives and other basic cops fall under this jurisdiction.
      Positions Available : Unlimited
    • Trainers – Train the new incoming Sentinel. Pretty basic idea there.
Positions Available : 3 All Trainer Positions Filled
    • Rogue – Sentinel that cast the Tower and their rules to the wind and now run with the resistance. A dangerous sort who are often shifty and unpredictable.
      Positions Available : Unlimited
    • Government – No one wants a Guide or a Normal in a position of power, now do they? Government literally controls everything within the area via their comfortable position in the Tower. What they say often goes, so it isn't a half-bad gig if you can get it.
      Positions Available : 3
    • Other – Got an idea? Run it by me. Chances are you are NOT going to be denied.
Guides : Characteristics, Statuses and Suggested Careers

  • Characteristics
    • Emotion Sensory – Also referred to by society as “Empathy,” Guides are fully able to sense emotions in others. Training leads to it occurring in varying degrees, but it is the defining trait of what makes a Guide.
    • Emotion Projection – Once trained, many Guides are able to actually project emotions onto others. They can send out feelings of joy or calm to help relax a fried Sentinel, or help them close their senses down to a manageable level again. It is this very gift that has made them so invaluable to Sentinel over the years.
    • Emotion Manipulation – You've seen my face before. No, really, you totally have, I'm a normal not a Guide. Manipulating others into having certain feelings, sometimes used to disguise, is a trait reserved for only the strongest of Guides. Once they understand how to do it, though. . .
    • Mental Exhaustion – Because they project feelings or absorb others, Guides will often become mentally exhausted. This shows up in the form of headaches from exertion, but can go so far as to have physical effects.
    • Have spirit animal – Exactly as Sentinel have a spirit animal that aids them and is a representation of the self, a Guide also has one. They function in the same manner.
    • Have different pheromone scent from Sentinel and Normals – The scent is usually only noticeable when around un-Bonded Sentinel and is their body's natural, chemical reaction to the Sentinel. On a basic, biological level all Guides seek to achieve a Bond, whether they like it or not. . This scent is what many Guide Hunters use to track them during Hunts.
  • Statuses Available
    • Bonded Guide – This sort of Guide has a Sentinel they have bonded to and are devoted to. They exist by their side at all times and aid their Sentinel through their days. If their bonded Sentinel agrees to it, a bonded Guide may still be used to calm other Sentinel if they require.
    • Un-Bonded Guide – If an un-Bonded Guide has come forward of their own will, they are kept within the Tower and trained on how to be better Guides by those above them. They do not live in glamour, but they are safe at least. Un-Bonded Guides will eventually be given “interviews” with Sentinel in an attempt to facilitate a match.
    • Rogue Guide – Guides that have refused to turn themselves in to the Tower and are trying to live their lives as they please in the outside world. The Tower views this sort of Guide as dangerous and requiring immediate attention, thus Hunts are staged to locate and bring them in.

  • Suggested Jobs and Careers Available
    • The Matchmaker – This Guide has risen to the highest position awarded and works hand in hand with the Head Guide Hunter. Their job is to take and analyze the Rogue Guides brought in for their strength level, then sort them appropriately. They are also in charge of finding suiting matches of Sentinel and Guides in an attempt to facilitate Bonds. In many Towers, the Matchmaker and the Head Guide Hunter are Bonded.
Positions Available : 1 Position Filled
    • Military – Though never on their own, Bonded Guides will be placed into the military alongside their Sentinel to help guide and protect them during their time. Strong Guides may be placed on Hunting Teams, but this is rare and highly discouraged by the Tower.
      Positions Available : Unlimited
    • Trainers – Much as Sentinel need someone better than them to train with, Guide's need someone who understands and knows the ropes. These Guides will see to the new individuals being brought into the Tower for the first time and may drop hints to the Matchmaker with who they think may be a good Bonding Match.
      Positions Available : 3 2 Positions Available
    • Doctors / Medical Staff – Though dissuaded from doing this as a career pursuit (the Tower would MUCH rather all Guides be bonded), Guides who have lost their Sentinel to unfortunate circumstances who have been judged as having a low chance of Bonding again by the Matchmaker may go into this field. They can still help Sentinel this way and feel useful, but remain safe and mandated by the Tower.
      Positions Available : Untilimted
    • Rogue – These are presumed dangerous and must, at all cost, be brought back to the Tower. Tower Governmental Officials almost fear Rogues and want them all brought back no matter the cost. Many end up putting their allegiance with the resistance. Others simply try to hide and blend in with the Normals.
      Positions Available : Unlimited
    • Other – Have an idea I haven't listed? Feel free to run it by me and ask if it's good for play. Chances are that I will say yes.

On Normals:
What about Normal Characters who are neither Sentinel nor Guide? In the midst of Guides with Empathy, and Sentinel with heightened senses, where does the Normal fit in? Won't a Normal Character be boring? A character is only as boring or as exciting as you make them! It should be mentioned that if you want a character who can move relatively freely, with little oversight, a Normal might be the right fit for you! Normals can have Tower or Resistance sympathies, or they may want nothing to do with either faction! If you're not sure about making a Normal character, let me point you towards some stellar examples of exciting Normal characters:

A note on Character Types vs Gender and Roles: There seems to be a notion that all Guides must be submissive females or males, and that all Sentinel must be dominant males or females. I would like to debunk this particular assumption. A Guide may be male or female with dominant or submissive or switch tendencies. A Sentinel may be male or female with dominant or submissive or switch tendencies.

While Sentinel often tend to display a bit more aggressiveness, due to their inherent animalistic tendencies, this does not require them to be dominant. While Guides may be able to read and to an extent manipulate their empathy, this does not require them to submit to another's will. For a good example of playing against type, I'll link here to a Sentinel and Guide pairing that don't necessarily fall into their "expected" roles.

Basically, YOUR CHARACTER can behave however you wish, be whatever gender you wish, and whether they present as Sentinel, Guide or Normal is entirely up to you! Your character can also be whatever sexual orientation you wish - just be aware that this is a LGBT-friendly game, so even if your character isn't gay, lesbian, bi or trans, there are several characters who are.

Current Character Needs: Guide Submissions are now Open on a Limited Basis: We need a few very specific types of Guides at current and will no longer be accepting anything outside the specified parameters.

Positions Open:

  • Guide Trainer (Guide)
  • Guide Hunters (Sentinel)
  • Guide Care Assistant (Normal) (junior or senior position)
  • Any position - Seeking the fanatically loyal to the Tower (Sentinel/Normal)
  • Members for the Siege Resistance faction (Guide/Sentinel/Normal)
  • Fanatical Resistance members (Sentinel/Guide/Normal)

Character Sheets

There are few rules in regards to the actual Character Sheet system. Take just a second to read the following, then feel free to enjoy yourself and create your character!
  • Play only as many characters as you can handle. I'd suggest starting with no more than two per person, then progressing on as you feel comfortable. The maximum amount of characters any one player may take on is seven. No player may have a greater amount of Guides than other types of characters at any given time, so if you have two characters, they may NOT both be Guides.  Remember, Guides are fewer in number at this point, so we don't need an imbalance in their favour.
  • Please make your character image NO LARGER than the suggested image in the application. If you need help resizing, I will be happy to assist you. Just PM the image to Dotley and she will fix it!
  • It should be noted that Guides are meant to be outnumbered by Sentinel, not the other way around. We would like a greater number of Sentinel or, at least, an equal number to Guides, otherwise this might look a little strange. . .
  • Spirit Animals should be real animals that exist in today's world. If you wish your character to have a spirit animal that has recently gone Extinct, a member of the species has to have been alive at the time of the Sentinel or Guide's birth. (For example, Golden Toads were last seen in 1989 - if your character was born prior to that year, it could, in theory, be their spirit animal.)
  • GM Team Request: Given the rate of murdered Guides in our current batch of Character's histories, the GM's would like to request that you refrain from implementing this particular trope in your own character bio. Exceptions will be made rarely on a case-by-case basis.

Character Sheets should be PM'ed to Secondary Co-GM's Emmykins and Dotley. They will then forward the CS to myself (Stygia) with notes intact. Please don't be surprised if you recieve suggestions for modifications to help flesh out your character, or changes to help them better fit within the constraints of the world.

Player Username : Mostly a notation for the GMs, but what is your Elliquiy username?
Player Preferences : This is an LGBT friendly game and I need to know ahead of time if you have a problem with playing opposite LGBT characters, male characters played by females and vice versa. If you are uncomfortable with this, please let us know.
Sentinel and Guide Preferences : If applying to play a Sentinel or a Guide, we ask that you state if you are comfortable with being Bonded to someone of the same sex or opposite sex only. Please remember, not all Bonds are sexual and may be platonic. If you have distinctions (will only do opposite-sex sexual Bonding, but same-sex Bonding is fine if platonic), please alert as well. When it comes time for matching we want it to be the best possible!

Full Name : As much as is applicable for your character!
Codename and Nicknames : Codename only applicable for Sentinel and Guide characters. Normals have no need to worry about it, unless pursuing a career where one would be required. Feel free to explain the reasoning, if you want, behind a nickname or codename!
Age and Birthdate : Pretty obvious here.
Gender : Male? Female? Trans? Genderqueer? Non-Binary? Go for it!
Marital Status : Single? Married? Divorced? Yes, Guides and Sentinel may be married before Bonding, but there is a sticky situation about that. . .

Sentinel, Guide or Normal? What is your character? If Sentinel or Guide, are you already Bonded?
Occupation : What does your character do for a living? See the section on suggested jobs and careers for some suggestions. Normals, you have the world at your fingertips. Go crazy.
Alliance : Do you ally with the Tower? Or are you a member of the resistance against it?
Spirit Animal : Applicable for Sentinel and Guide characters, not Normals. What animal is it that best represents your character? What is it they see?

Height : Simply put, how tall is your character?
Body Type: Skinny, Buff, Built, Chubby, etc. Detail as much as you desire.
Hair : Colour? Style?
Eyes : Colour
Distinguishing Features : Any tattoos, piercings, scars, etc. that may be unique to your character should be listed here.
Anything else? If the character image you have chosen to use is absolutely perfect /except/ they need to have a lip piercing, note that! Or if their hair is styled differently. Wrong fashion? Whatever you need to correct with the character image, note that. Anything you believe we forgot in terms of appearance, feel free to note that as well.

Likes : What does your character like? Name a few things to help us get to know them.
Dislikes : What is your character less-than-fond of? Give us a few examples.

Personality : Here is where we really get to learn about them as a person. Attempt to shoot for two, good and solid paragraphs, ideally describing how your character shows themselves to the world, and the personality hidden beneath that, if their "game face" is different than what's going on beneath the surface.

History : What is your character's history up to this point in their lives? You can be vague, but try to give us things to work with. Be creative with the history and enjoy writing it! Please go for two paragraphs minimum.

Sexuality : Please give us your character's sexuality. It is open to change throughout the course of the game and does not need to remain static unless you want to.
Sexual On's : Put simply, you may name a few of your character's greatest YES PLEASE items. You may simply directly link us to your own Ons and Offs if you do not feel like typing this section out.
Sexual Off's : These are your hard-limit NO'S with your character. You may directly link us to your Ons and Offs if your character's hard-limit no's happen to coincide with your own.
Are you comfortable with Non-Consensual Activities with your character? What I am asking here is simple : If the situation arises, are you alright with your character being involved in a NC activity, either being on the receiving or giving end? It is given that any player would PM you checking about it, but you may want to include "PM first" to ensure they understand to check in about that. You will not be denied for your answer, nor will you be forced to participate in this if you state no. All trigger-worthy items during the game will be tagged appropriately if they appear at all.
Are you alright with sexual activities beyond your character's stated sexuality? In some cases, a player may list their character as "Heterosexual - Straight", then allow them to have a Homosexual experience. While their CHARACTER may not explicitly want it to begin with, the PLAYER is okay with it. What we are asking is if you, the player, are comfortable with this or if what you put for your character is ALL you want. You will not be denied for your answer, nor will you be forced to participate if you state no.

Anything Else? If you think something should be noted that I did not have listed above, please feel free to add it here! You may also use this as a section to communicate with us about issues you may potentially have as a player or other items.

Caela

It looks like a lot of information and a big game but we've got an amazing group of welcoming writers! Come and play!

~leaves cookies as a lure~

Countdown

Is there any interest from Female Sentinels having a Male Guide that are obviously not bonded yet?
Just checking before I start writing stuff up!

Caela

I would say that it would probably depend on the character you made up and if any of the writers felt that he would mesh well with their Sentinels. We have very few characters that are absolutely, totally, and utterly against the idea of Bonding, but many that are rather wary of it.

Cerevan

There are in fact a number of unbonded female Sentinel open to male Guides, both Tower and Resistance affiliated, to include: Celestine Parker, Skylar Fawkes, and Jospheine Worthington. While not all of these ladies may be compatible with what you have in mind, this should give you an idea of the variety that Broken Bonds has. :-)

Also, since Caela sort of beat me to the punch...there are obvious compatibility things on both sides when it comes to something like a Bond. Obviously you'll have to communicate with the other players on this end. ;) But, I doubt that you will have too much trouble finding interested parties assuming you write up a character.

Caela

lol Suuuuuuuuuuure Cere, go and be all kinds of more thorough than me!

Where is the communication? Bravery isn't ignoring someone, a strong person is someone who can be honest. Honesty may hurt but a lie or being ignorant can hurt ten times more.

Potential new players: please note that as we fill up on guides once more, I will be significantly more picky about which ones I approve. As noted above, guides are meant to be rare. Also note, I'm more likely to approve a guide if you're making them for a particular sentinel, and have communicated with the player in question.

Edit 6/21: Guide Submissions are now Closed. Those of you who have already spoken to me about your pending Guide Characters (RogueFairy & Countdown) are still fine, but any other inquiries will be directed towards playing a Sentinel or Normal character. Thanks!

Bloodied Porcelain

I want no ordinary lover. I want a storm. I want sleepless nights and endless conversations at four a.m. I want passion, I want madness.
I want someone who's able to make my whole body shiver from a distance and also pull me close to make sense of all my bones.

Hi BP! Yes! We are still accepting Sentinel and Normal characters. Do let us know if you have any questions :)

I tried to get people to talk me out of it... all they did was the opposite of what I asked. My friends are bad listeners. xD

I will agree with Koka and add that it sounds like they only want what is best for you! ~nodsnodsnods~

I am interested. :) Are there a lot of military? Or little trainers? My character could fit into ether one. :)
I am 100% okay with random PM's.

Hello Asher! Thanks for stating your interest. Let us know if you have questions or need any help figuring out a character to submit  :-)

*Points back up to his pervious post* I do actually! I didn't notice someone had replied and didn't want to double post. :)

In terms of Sentinel Trainers, I believe we're pretty full up. However, we do welcome military personnel. ;) There are a few others who are military, so you'd have people to play with in that capacity.

Asher

Fantastic. Military was my first choice, but I am used to a lot of people making militaristic characters when they have a choice. :)

Dotley

Cerevan is right that we are totally full on Sentinel trainers  :-)

Okay, I should have him up later "today". I just need his history and likes/dislikes. Plus some touching up of things. :)

Be sure to PM your character to Dotley and Emmykins for review, once he's ready. They will then send your boy on to me for the final approval/suggestion/adjustment period. Once your character is approved, you may post him up in the accepted character thread.

Thanks!
