Hiya! Just wanted to drop by a note of interest. This looks like fantastic fun. I'm going to take a peek at the character sheets and a few IC scenes to see if I can come up with an idea for a suitable character  :-)

This seems neat! :D I'll make a character when I get the chance.

How far behind would someone be if they were interested in joining?  Like, a ton to read and get caught up on to get started?

It's not too bad yet.  We're still in the first open period for scenes, so you'd be jumping in at the beginning.  There are a lot of scenes currently going, but you wouldn't necessarily have to read them all to jump in.

What Kyrsa said! :-) Nothing major has happened yet, so you could jump in with little reading and not feel lost. The first event is a picnic/club rush in the quad. That would probably be the primary thing to brush up on if you would plan to take your character there.

Awesome! As an FYI, in case it might be helpful to know, we are full on psychology and biology/medical science professors, and we have a theatre professor on the verge of being approved. Everything else is fair game!

Peter Connoroy

Nicknames: Mr. Saint
Age: 34
Birthday: June 9th 1984
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Occupation: Professor of Mathematics.
Residence: a private residence that is one train ride away from Baymont University.

Face Claim: Michael B. Jordan
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Brown
Height: 6”1
Distinguishing Marks:

Personality:
Peter despises himself. Despise because his self-loathing is of such a degree that its causes haunt him: his infidelity, his porn addiction, and his preying on his students, to be precise. He recognizes, of course, that he must change his ways. He will often read self-help books and listen to motivational podcasts to find routes to become a new, and ‘better’, man. Indeed, such resources help, but only for a few days—at most, a week.

Peter isn’t particularly fond of mathematics. He had wanted, and still wants, to study psychology. However, adhering to his parents’ advice, he had studied mathematics—just like his mother—and even pursued a PhD (his thesis discussed the possibility of infinity, pretty boring stuff). It is likely that he will regret this decision until he is six feet under ground.

What else is there to say? Well, paradoxically, Peter loves his wife. But then again, most men who cheat believe they do.

Bio:
Childhood

Peter grew up in Toronto and was of that minority (within the black minority) who was born into wealth. His mother was a professor of mathematics at the University of Waterloo. His father was a Minister of Finance in the Ontario Cabinet (his parents were strict Conservatives). When his party lost the subsequent election, Peter’s father became a law professor at Osgoode Hall, where he would spend the rest of his life until retirement.

Peter wouldn’t encounter poverty until he was thirteen. Neglected by his parents, it was easy enough to stray from their inattentive eye. He hopped on a TTC to Toronto’s downtown core, where he was surprised to see vagrants, pick pockets, and, perhaps most surprisingly, wealth inequality. He had always assumed that everyone was as rich as him, or, if not, then at least close to it.

By then, he had already become so enamored with wealth that he had not fathomed its opposite. And, having no experience with the poor, he instinctively feared them. Although this fear abated once he entered high school, the idea that the poor had no one but themselves to blame for their destitution would stay with him well into his adulthood.

His parents’ conservatism had rubbed off on him.

Teenage Years

Peter followed his mother’s footsteps to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Waterloo. He had once broached the topic of studying psychology, as well as mathematics, but when his parents pretended to not have heard him, he never brought the topic up again.

It was here when he became addicted to pornography. He saw pornography as a means of escape but it would take a move to America for Peter to realize that what he was trying to escape was his parents. Similar to most addictions, Peter wasn’t aware that he was addicted until it felt too late. He was watching pornography every day and jerking off two or three times a day. His parents had their suspicions that there was something wrong with their son, but they didn’t care to ask because Peter’s academic record remained impeccable.

Adulthood

After completing his degree, he travelled to the United States on a full scholarship to study physics at the University of California Santa Barbara. He then obtained his PhD in mathematics at MIT, where he wrote his dissertation on the possibility of infinity. Even he had to admit that the dissertation was poorly written, and he was surprised that he had passed his defense of his thesis. He was equally surprised that he had been given a professor position at Baymont University as soon as he had finished his studies. Being an alumnus of a prestigious American college had its benefits.

By now, he was happily married to Shannon Brown, a youth pastor at the church Peter sometimes frequented. Shannon knew about Peter’s pornography addiction, but she thought that she could rescue him. And she had, for a few weeks, but then he had simply become better at hiding his addiction from her.

Once, Shannon returned home from work to find one of Peter’s students sucking his cock on their bed. Distraught, she had threatened to divorce him; however, Peter persuaded her not to, promising that he had only felt lonely because it had been so long since they had last been intimate. Believing that Peter’s infidelity was partly her fault, Shannon tried to open more opportunities to have sex with her husband. However, they were both busy people, and when rumors began spreading that Peter was cheating on her again, Shannon did nothing, once again believing that his infidelity was a result of her negligence as a wife.

Present

Peter has gotten a bit of a reputation at Baymount University for sleeping with his students. However, this reputation is fuelled only by rumors, and so, no legal actions have been taken against him. Moreover, Peter has become somewhat of a celebrated mathematician; and so, the school is hesitant to let go of the money that his fame invites.

Shannon is pregnant. Now, Peter must wonder how he can be a good father with all his vices, and whether he even wants to be a father.

The chair of Harvard’s math department has given Peter an offer that is difficult to refuse: a full professor position with triple the salary, a set of the world’s brightest research assistants, and a research grant of close to one million dollars. Shannon thinks that Peter should take the offer (probably because it would take Peter away from Baymont) but Peter is hesitant. It isn’t that there is anything tangible that is keeping him at Baymont, and yet…

Last, Peter’s mother is ill. Cancer, so the doctors say. Peter tries to not think of it. He has too much on his plate at the moment.

Nico

Discussing the latest psychological theories.

Sounds interesting! My character loves that.

Blythe

Oh, cool, a possible math professor! Given I just made a math major, I'm super happy to see a character that will teach math!

Also, for anyone thinking of joining, my Jellybean needs a female roommate in Zeus Hall, if that helps anyone!

Lyron

Peter seems pretty entertaining! :D All faculty have off-campus housing except for resident directors, not to say that there might not be a spare, vacant studio in either Zeus or Apollo, from an unfilled resident director position, that Peter could crash in if his wife ever locked him out or something. Other than that, provided you're still going with the professor concept, you can post him to the Characters thread!
