How do I unsubscribe from a topic

I go into my topics. I click the box next to the topic I don't want notifications for. I then click unsubscribe. I still receive notifications. Help please.

Go to that thread and click the notify box at the top.  A dialog box should pop up asking if you want to unsubscribe (or some other such term).

When I click show new replies to your posts, is there a way to make it not show certain threads anymore?

Not unless you want to remove all your posts from that thread. :)
