^^I like to keep such things nice and simple... Lols. So, is this going to be a modern time or not so modern time, it's your choice since you thought of the idea. Also, if you had any thoughts about adding a little fantasy into the mix I would absolutely love that... I am a complete nut over fantasy type stuff. XD I just can't help myself. :P

Kaernak

Name: Kalys
Age: 25
Personality: Mysterious, generally reserved, more apt to watch and listen then to draw attention to himself
Appearance: Short cut dark hair.  Scar running length wise down right eye (in which he still has sight).  Usually keeps hood on cloak up.  Padded leather armor.  Dresses in dark greys and blacks.  No visible weapons

Animegurl5

Name: Jadaria (Jade for short)
Age: 19
Personality: She is loud and never does anything that doesn't call to her. She loves to be spontaneous and adventurous without a second of hesitation. While some think she is just young and naive, she is a lot smarter and observant than you might think. Just as quickly as she can make a huge scene, she can also disappear into a crowd though she hardly ever uses this skill for she loves the attention.
Appearance: She is tall with long, straight, black hair and striking blue eyes. Her skin is natually sun kissed since she spends so much time outside. She is most often seen wearing outfits with long bellsleeves and flowy skirts or outfits totally inappropriate for her time.

The young maiden ran lightly through the tall grass of the meadow, her feet bare as she explored the wilderness. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining down brightly upon her back for she had made sure to leave her home in the early morning. She laughed aloud though there was no one that she knew of around to hear it and she sang a light little tune in a voice that some envied and others bested. Her dress flowed freely from her waist down but she was confined to the tight cage of the top half. She did have to admit though, that the outfit flattered her figure well. Her sleeves were long and fitted to her arms until they reached nearly the end, that was when they spread out into perfect bells that swallowed her slender hands. She spun in a circle before falling backward into the tall grass, it merrily devouring her figure and hiding it from prying eyes. It was so comfortable and such a wonderful place to stop and think, and think she did. Her mind was quickly swept away with the white clouds that floated above her head.

Kalys wiped his blade clean on the merchant's tunic then reached into the cadaver's boot and pulled free a pouch of gold.  "That's the last time you try to run," he spoke silently.  He slapped the horse on the flank to scare it into running off with its modest cart.  Someone would recognize the cart, or what remained of it, when the horse returned.  He cocked his head to the side thinking he heard a noise.  Walking slowly to the edge of the stand of trees he looked out onto the meadow and spotted a young maiden.  Did she hear the merchant cry out just moments before?  Kalys jumped up, grabbing onto a low branch and pulled himself higher into the tree, sliding the blade back within the folds of his cloak.  He raised his hood and pulled the cloak tighter about himself and watched her.  A young thing, younger than himself certainly and quite pretty.  "Don't come over here," he whispered.

Animegurl5

Somewhere off in the distance she heard the cry of a frightened horse but she payed it no mind, for it didn't interest her. Her mind was elsewhere, that was until she felt something slide across her leg. She sat up slowly, terrified to see what she had already guessed. She jumped high into the air with a tremendous scream tagged onto one word and one word only. "SNAAAAAAKE!!!" She shook it off and drew a small dagger that her father ordered her to carry for protection. "I hate snakes." She hissed as she watched it move away in the grass. With a sigh of relief she replaced the dagger in it's sheath among the folds of fabric that made up her skirt. A chill passed up her spine as she got the feeling she was being watched but when she turned about, there was no one in sight. With a shrug she moved and found a new spot to rest after her fright.

Kalys grimaced and watched her carefully after the incident with the snake.  Had she seen him?  He certainly hoped not.  She carried a blade.  Kalys nodded to himself in approval.  Nothing too long, or for much better than skinning a fish or dealing with a small animal.  She seemed to be able to handle it passingly well.  He thought to himself silently and watched her move on.  What if she HAD seem him and was just going to alert someone.  If she'd simply run off he'd easily have chased her down and been forced to...best not to think about it.  He knew he had to follow to make sure.  It wouldn't do well to be seen after the....change of leadership among the clan he was working for.  He sighed and slid down the side of the tree that obscured his descent and tried to stick to the shadows as she moved.

Animegurl5

A sudden thought occured to her that while she was out and about she ought to collect berries in the nearby forest, for they were always the best around this time of year. She spun around and paused to await the dizzy feeling to pass before she set off on her little quest, her feet carrying her swiftly and gracefully to her destination. She looked around and spotted a bird, a quite beautiful creature and decided she must say hello. She was quite the animal lover. "Hi!" She yelled, waving her hand abover head in a wide arch. This startled the bird but it only looked in her direction with a curious stare. Sky laughed as she bent down to pluck the bush clean of the ripe berries that had grown there.

Less than a bolt shot away.  He'd have to be very careful to not be heard.  He whispered a few silent words to activate the runes on his cloak to bend light around himself.  Gods above, but she was pretty.  A bit loud, but then ...he'd never had the carefree lifestyle she seemed to have been raised in.  He slowly shifted to a more comfortable position and watched her.  Kalys was certain there was no sound of his leathers rubbing against the wood.  She didn't seem like much of a threat....but if she saw the body...he'd have to take action...and perhaps a second life.  His thoughts grew dark as he sat silently, his eyes wandering as he began to plan how he'd make it look like they murdered each other if he had to.  When he shook himself back to the moment she had moved on.  Fire and bones he thought to himself and slowly scanned the area for movement.

Animegurl5

The bird just continued to stare at Sky and it began to irritate her slightly to the point where she stopped her picking and moved over to the tree. The bird took off but only moved up a few branches, just out of reach. "I don't think so you chicken." She smiled deviously as she placed her foot on the lowest branch and gripped the tough bark with her toes, then she stretched her arms above her and caught hold of the next branch. It wasn't long before she had almost reached the bird when it decided to move up higher. "Come back here." She began laughing now, it was all just a big game to them. She scuttled up the branches faster now, beginning to get the hang of climbing like the squirrels did. Higher and higher she went following the bird until she was level with the branch that held it's nest. "Oh. I'm sorry. I didn't-" She couldn't even finish her sentence before the bird let out a loud squak and her a squeal. It lunged for her, and her reflex made her let go of the branch she had been holding on to for support. She fell a bit with a yelp but caught on to a branch a few feet down. She was hanging on the edge, quite stuck and not sure what to do. She had magic, a bit, but she was told never to use it in fear of being marked as a demon lover. She never understood why that was, for she thought everything was just so beautiful in life and now she was faced with some interesting troubles. The branch snapped and she fell another few feet to the next branch, which she knew wouldn't hold her for long. It was also the last before she fell straight for the ground.

He watched her playing with the bird and was shocked as she started to fall.  He sprang to his feet and dropped to the forest floor, rolling to absorb the impact as he did so.  He saw the branch she was grasping onto bend.  Whispering the words to dispel his cloaks magic he jerked his hood back and caught her as she fell.  "I hear the trees are an unsafe playground after a certain age." easily speaking as he caught her.  Then he found himself starring into her eyes.  His grey orbs locked onto hers.  They were so...blue.  He felt as though she could see right through his act, but tried not to let it show.  Kalys still held her awkwardly in his arms and then his cheeks colored as he sat her down.  "Are you unhurt?" he said silently. You should have let her fall you fool! he silently berated himself.

Animegurl5

She fell to what was most certaintly to be her doom when she was caught. Actually caught. She was completely mesmerized by his gorgeous eyes though, and had quite a bit of trouble getting a word out when he had finally set her down. "I uh, I'm fine. Thanks to you anyway. I was so sure that I was alone, however. Where ever did you come from?" She grew slightly suspicious, her hand hovering above the fold that concealed her dagger but then she thought about how this man had just saved her from more than just a nasty fall and couldn't bring herself to draw the blade though her hand stayed close to it. "I am quite grateful, honestly. You don't know how much you just saved me from, for my father would be furious if he found out...." She trailed off in cautious thought.

He grinned as she stuttered.  "I came from the woods just over there." he pointed off towards where the merchant's corpse lay.  "My horse spooked and dropped me onto the ground." brushing his cloak free of leaves from his tumble he prayed she bought the story.  I was heading towards yon meadow when i heard your squeal.  I happened to be nearby and you fell into my grasp.  I'm glad I was able to catch you.  A fall like that would knock you senseless at the least."  He spoke evenly and gently, his eyes never leaving hers.  He knew her hand was creeping towards her dagger but also knew he'd let her draw it if she felt that threatened.  He extended a hand.  "I'm Kalys, catcher of falling maidens.  And you?"

Animegurl5

"So, that was the sound I heard. I was quite sure I heard a spooked horse, but it must have been yours. I hope you recover him quickly." Her smile was genuine and warm as she extended her own hand to his. "I am Skylar, disturber of the peace." She laughed until she noticed her hand, which was not even touching Kalys' yet but was glowing with a bit of her own magic. She quickly pulled her hand near her chest, her eyes widening in curiosity. "A magic user?" She asked tenatively. As she thought about it, the more it made sense how she hadn't heard him at all during that time until she had been caught. Then she regained her composure and hid behind a tone her father often used when asking strangers exactly what they wanted from him. "And what type of magic do you practice. Such a handsom fellow with magic at his disposal...Please forgive me for being slightly wary about the situation." Her muscles were completely relaxed, not at all nervous but more curious rather. She hadn't had a real chat with a magic user in quite some time now and this excited her.

He noticed her glowing hand.  "The horse will return to me.  He always does.  As for what type of magic?  Watch and behold!" He reached into a pouch at his belt and drew out a small rubber ball, red in color.   "Now if you will hold your hand up just so," he grabbed her wrist lightly and raised it above her head, palm facing him.  "Are you ready?" he waited until she nodded.  Then spun facing away from her and threw the ball high and hard, away from them both.  He spun back to her.  "three, two, and...one" the ball thudded into her hand.  "Minor magic.  More for winning a few coins in a tavern or getting money in a performing troupe as I did in my younger years."  What he didn't tell her was that the true magic lay in his accuracy.  The ball had actually bounced off several trees before coming back to her.  Not a hard throw but certainly entertaining for those who didn't know.  "As for handsome?" grinning he said, "I don't know if that is accurate." He pointed to the scar running down his face, deep and jagged.  "Most seem to run screaming when they see me."

Kaernak

(running to grab a coffee...be back in a bit)

Animegurl5

"Minor magic you say. As minor as that may be, it's still pretty cool. As for me, I am a bit more in tune with nature and her beauty. Nothing special, but as you just witnessed, my hand will glow if nears another that practices magic. It's supposed to be a warning system, if only it weren't so obvious." She had to laugh at that, the unsubtle way to warn everyone that not only was there a magic user about but two. "I am not most people now am I? You insult me with your lack of confidence in your looks for I am a fairly good judge. One must only look to their eyes to know all you need to know." She smiled before tossing the ball high into the air. She closed her eyes and let the world around her do her bidding. The air swirled graciously about her form before catching the small object in it's grasp and wisking it around the two of them before resting upon the man's head in perfect balance. She reopened her eyes with a bright smile and ducked around him. "Well I must be off, Father would not approve of my choice of speaking to a handsome man alone in the forest. Though if you are ever in need of anything, feel free to stop on by. I am most certainly in your debt." She winked before turning around and trotting back towards the tall grass of the meadow.

He spun in place and swung his head up, the ball flying into the air and then back into the open pouch at his side.  "Perhaps I should walk you home?  I wouldnt' feel right with you wandering alone back to where you live.  After all, the woods can be quite treacherous."  He stood wondering if he should put a dagger in her back now.  She's too beautiful and suspects nothing.  If she goes missing questions will be asked. his professional sense warned.  "Besides I'm sure your father would be grateful to know you had an escort."

Animegurl5

"Ofcourse you can escort me home. If you can catch up!" She called playfully over her shoulder while her feet picked up pace and her body crouched lower to hide among the grass as she moved. "If you can catch me, I'll treat you to lunch." She called, falling still and silent among the plants. She whispered to the plants, asking them to warn her when the man approached so that she may make a getaway. Slowly and carefully she picked her way throught the tall plants that surrounded her, almost as silent as the shadow she left behind her. She had to hold her breath in fear of laughing at the fun of the game, something she couldn't resist if she ahd the chance.

He shook his head noting when the grass stopped moving.  "Oh to have lived alongside you....." he muttered softly and began working his way around where he knew she stopped.  After walking several paces beyond where he expected her to be Kalys stopped and said "Well I guess I'm on my own for lunch...and to track down that horse..." he let just enough of a hint of sadness creep into his voice.  He was rather enjoying spending time with someone who didn't know his past and didn't expect him to kill on command.  He dropped into the grass himself and sat, staring up at the sky and running a finger along his scar.  That was how this had all started, years ago.  Lost in thought again he became oblivious to his surroundings.

((i will be here as time allows it but I'm rather enjoying our game.  Sleep well))

Animegurl5

The grass had whispered to Skylar that her new guest had stopped and settled for the moment, but she smiled and laughed silently. She crept slowly towards where the plants had pointed her and found herself staring at Kalys' back. She withdrew her dagger and hooked her arm around his kneck quite loosely so as not to harm but to keep in place. "One should never let their gaurd down, especially if that person is a female. I often find that is man's greatest weakness. But never you mind that, you are my prisoner now and that means you are stuck with me until at least dinner." She whispered in his ear with a great smile that flowed thickly through her voice.

Kalys grabbed her wrist, leaned back into her and turned, a short movement making her fingers drop the dagger into the dirt without hurting her.  Fingers intertwining with hers,  his other arm came around her waist pulling her in close, now nose to nose with her.  "If I am your prisoner then let me be a willing captive...you will find that you need to draw no weapon on me."  Grey orbs locked with her eyes.  "Stuck until dinner?  That sounds delightful.  My mother always said "Kalys", he mimicked her voice in such a way that only lent itself to hyperbole, "a woman isn't going to fall out of the sky and into your arms."  Wonder if she'd laugh if she knew how wrong she was?"  His eyes didn't leave hers for a second.  She could have tried to kill him just then if she'd suspected anything.  Good.  You should be more aware of your surroundings anyway. his cold professionalism warned him.

((good morning! sorry i've been away for a time but work happens!  hope you slept well!))

Animegurl5

She gasped as the dagger fell to the ground but she didn't even have time to watch it before she was almost litterally face to face with Kalys. Her eyes were locked with his, unable to look away and she found that she didn't really want to. She laughed lightly at his immitation of his mother, hanging onto every word with a smile. Then she blushed and turned away, out of his grasp only to face him from a foot off. "Well I didn't fall from the sky, just from a tree so her words still ring true. Besides my father always told me 'What ever you do, don't let the wrong type of guy sweep you off of your feet'." Her voice dropped lower as she attempted to immitate her own father's words but she ended up laughing herself. She picked up her knife gingerly, wiping the dirt off with her skirt and resheathing it. Then she took Kalys by the hand and began to guide him towards her home. "You know, I don't think I have ever seen you around these parts before. Are you new?" She asked, turning her head with sparkling eyes to her captive.

Phrase your words carefully  "I am.  Have been traveling for a while.  Was going to head home back east but..." he stopped and shrugged, exhaling a resigned breath, "nothing back there for me."  He smiled to her.  "Haven't been able to find too much in the way of honest work around here.  A couple performances at a few taverns displaying my unique gift, a few day to day labor jobs but nothing that really stuck."  He looked around, making mental landmarks of the surroundings.  "I hope your father won't mind a guest coming home with you...especially if..you know..." he gestured to her hand.  "I don't know how your father feels about magic but my mother always taught me to keep it hidden."

Animegurl5

"Oh don't worry about my father. He only worries for my safety, that's all. You see the men in this town are held with the highest respect if they are magic users, but there aren't many of them here. However if a woman has such abilities she is usually cast out at birth or burned alive. My abilities didn't appear until much later in my life but father didn't want anything to happen to me. So we went on with life like I never even got them. He might be a little, over protective though. And if it's work you are looking for, you can try the Smith. My father is in charge of it while the real owner is down with sickness but he still works as if he were another employee. Still gets payed well too. And if you need a place to stay, I'm sure mother will let you stay for free if you agree to help with chores while you are here." Her smile brightened with every word that left her mouth and soon she was beaming with a smile as bright as the sun itself. Suddenly she let go of Kalys hand though didn't stop walking. The glow immediately ceased but she hid it in her skirt to be sure that those on the street didn't see it. "Hurry up or we will be late for lunch."

He picked up his step to follow her.  He'd apprenticed at a smith in his hometown so the work would be familiar.  Perhaps he could leave the life he knew behind and start over.  Don't be a fool.  Blood is all you know.  You can't escape it. the voice inside him spoke with feverish urgency.  "I don't want your family to feel they have to go out of the way for me."  He didn't want this family to take him in and then something happen to them on account of him.  "I could stay at a local inn if there is one?"  He looked at her, concern furrowing his brow, his scar pulling itself slightly out of alignment with its lower half.    That's right.  Hide from them.  Don't let them know you.  It is easier to keep a cold distance.  Don't get sucked in by a pretty face.  Shaking his head to silence the voice, he strode beside her awaiting her answer.

Animegurl5

"Don't be silly." Her smile faded some but it was still rather bright. "That is my call, I'm daddy's little girl, he does what I want him to eventually." She was really hoping that Kalys would stay at least for a while but it was starting to seem as if that weren't going to happen. "But no pressure, you may do as you like after dinner. At that point you are free." She sighed, almost completely losing her smile. It couldn't be helped, she was falling for a man she didn't even know. Don't be so naive. He is just passing through and will begone before you know it. Don't do anything stupid. It was an all out war in her head and she fell silent trying to calm the constant waves of thoughts running through her mind.

He slipped an arm around her waist.  "Of course I'll stay after dinner.  I just don't want to impose upon your family more than I should.  It would seem strange if you were to bring a man home that you just met and want them to give him a bed.  I can stay at the inn.  You wouldn't want people to gossip after all would you?"  Gods but aren't you a clever boy.  Protecting her AND reassuring her.  "Where did your smile disappear to?  Are you suddenly feeling unwell?"  He looked to her, concerned.

Animegurl5

"Let people talk all they want, for I know they have nothing to say in the first place. No one would dare mess with me, they know better." At that point her stomach growled loudly as if to answer his question of the mysterious disappearance of her smile. "It left with my breakfast on my way up the tree. I have a feeling that we will find it at lunch though." She said, spotting her home at the end of the road. "That's it there." Her smile peeked out again, just before reaching the door. She clasped the knob and opened the door calling over her shoulder. "Beware of my brother though, he can be a little...." It was out of nowhere that a young man jumped out of the shadows and pointed his favorite bow and arrow at Kalys. She let out a little squeal, most certainly taken by surprise but regained her composure and growled with frustration. "CRAZY!" Her cut off sentence had just been completed as she punched her older brother in the face and watched as he hit the ground. "Have you lost your mind? All the nonesense of the world has nicely fit into that small head of yours, but I wish you would at least act intelligent!" She hissed as she scowled at him. "Sorry about him, Kalys this is my idiot older brother Jake. Jake, be civil and polite to our guest Kalys. Is lunch ready yet?" She asked, her stomach growling once more. Jake got to his feet and dusted himself off before growling a short 'yeah'. At that point Skylar dragged Kalys inside before her brother decided to actually shoot the bow.

Kalys looked at the boy with a look of confusion on his face.  "You know...a bow shouldn't be discharged inside.  You could break something."  He paid no more attention to the boy and followed Skylar through the house.  "Does your brother often menace people that are walking in the house?" he whispered to her, his head leaning down to her ear so the sound wouldn't pass to anyone else.  "It would seem to me that an arrow is a bad way to POINT out that company has arrived." He let the joke roll off his tongue as if it were the most natural thing in the world to say.  You nearly put a knife between the boys eyes.  And would have in any other situation.  This girl is making you soft.  First the tree, then the meadow, now here.  He felt the familiar weight of the throwing knives sheathed about his forearm and smirked slightly.  It would have been an easy toss but the girl seemed to have a knack for dealing with her older brother.  "Quite a punch you have there.  I guess it comes from growing up with an older brother?"  He looked to her hand.  "Break anything?"

Animegurl5

"No. Not usually, just those he likes. Seems he has taken a liking to you, not very common for him." She smiled with amusement and burst out laughing at his joke. Looking down at her hand she shrugged. "I was raised with the knowledge of how to fight, in case the time came that my abilities were found out by the public. He and I used to spar everyday, quite good fun and good practice. Ha, you insult me with your lack of confidence, had I broken anything, which isn't likely... It would have mended almost immediately, though would have snagged quite of bit of my energy as well." She smiled before belting out into the otherwise quiet house. "MAAAAMA! Jake is trying to kill our guests again." Her voice rang out through the walls and her mother turned the corner with a look of annoyance. "You mustn't be so loud, you will raise the dead." When she saw Kalys she smiled. "Welcome, sorry for my son... He can be a little energetic at times. Feel free to make yourself at home and stay as long as you'd like." Then she turned about the corner to complete the meal. "See, I told you they wouldn't mind."

He jumped at her shout for her mother.  Wake the dead indeed.  "Thank you for your hospitality ma'am.  My name is Kalys."  Pulling his gloves off and sticking them through his belt he extended a hand to her mother.  "If there is anything I can do to be of assistance just let me know."  He smiled to her.  "You know...if your son is interested in some training I can provide it.  I've traveled with several different kinds of people throughout my short years and have picked up quite a variety of skills.  Perhaps a little confidence and discipline is what he needs? I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds but I know it helped me a lot."  He took a seat next to Skylar and prayed it wasn't someones usual spot at the table.  "Also...if there is anything I can do to pay you back for this meal I will be glad to do so.  You have only but to ask."  Asking for help from you?  She might as well ask for a knife in her throat  He sighed inwardly at his voice wishing it would go away.

Animegurl5

"Maybe he needs a good butt kicking." Skylar mused as she imagined her brother in training with Kalys. "Well it would be quite amusing, feel free to train him away. Then maybe he would be a little more civil like you." Her mother called over her shoulder with a hint of laughter. "Though I don't suppose you could help with the cleaning afterwards, the food is already done. It's the clean up that has me tired."

"I, my dear ladies, am an expert in cleaning.  I've often been told that my work with dishes left them so clean that you could eat off of them."  he let the joke hang in the air with a bit of a smile on his face.  "It is the least I can do to pay you back for a meal.  In fact I quite insist that you leave the entire affair to me and don't bother yourself with any further chores today.  I'm quite sure with Skylar's instruction I will be able to handle it all."  He grinned and turned to Skylar.  "Civility doesn't come from violence.  Civility comes from knowing you can stand up to violence and knowing when it is appropriate to do so.  When to fight or when to flee.  Realizing that the best way to stop violence is to not partake in any. "

"My, my, Skylar. It would seem that you have brought the very God down to our table today. Where ever did you find him?" Sky's mother was quite impressed with the young man and most certainly wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to have a day of relaxation. "Let's just leave it at he swept me off my feet, alright Mother?" Her smile brightened the room ten degrees and twice over when her Mother brought the food out to the table. "Oh Skylar, I believe your father was taking a short nap before going back to the Smiths today. Be a dear and wake the dead." She winked then plugged her ears, gesturing to Kalys that he should do the same. It was quite amazing the power of her lungs, especially on such a small frame but she called most clearly, and loudly for her Father. Upstairs you could hear a crash of a man's body hit the floor with a loud string of cursing afterwards. "He's up." her voice held every bit of angelicy and innocence as if she had never shouted at all. A few moments later, Skylar's Father stomped down the stairs and into the dining room. "Skylar, what have I told you about shouting in the house?" He grumbled, eyeing Kalys who was sitting beside her. "Sorry Papa but Mother asked me to raise the dead and so I did just that." Her smile looked innocent but her eyes begged otherwise. "Yes, yes. Very well then, who is the young lad and why has he come?" The large man sat down at his usual spot at the table. "Father be polite. He helped me out with something quite important today, and has already agreed to do the chores for Mother today. Jake is also in for a bit of a surprise, so a win-win for all. Now shut your mouth and eat, I'm starved." She smiled one of those smiles and you could just she her father relax in defeat. "You know, I am really starting to wonder who the real head of the house is." He gave her one of those 'I love you but you are a pain in the ass' type looks. Then he took a large bite of the food and they all began eating, with the exclusion of Jake.

((welcome back!  that was quite a lengthy dinner you had!   ;) ))

Even with his ears plugged the girls voice tore into him.  Even if we had killed her in the woods someone would have heard her scream  Kalys stood and shook her father's hand.  "I am Kalys, traveler and, while captive by your daughter," he winked at her over their inside joke, "household task completer extraordinaire.  At least until I can find some work here in your town.  If it isn't too forward of me, your daughter had mentioned that the local smith was sick?  If you need an experienced hand I was apprenticed to a smith in my hometown years ago.  Unfortunately he fell in love with wine and gambling and ended up....well...it would be more polite to say he ended.  I've been traveling ever since doing odd jobs here and there."  Not knowing what else to say he sat back down and joined the rest in eating.  The food was...nothing short of delicious.  He'd had good food, for certain, but made by the formula all taverns across the continent seemed to follow.  This was REAL food.  "Ma'am I must say that I've honestly never eaten anything quite so good.  My own mother wasn't as accomplished at cooking as you are."  He smiled briefly and then had to remind himself to eat slowly so as not to be rude or gluttonous.

((Yeah, I went out to dinner with my parents though I had no idea where we were going. It was about a 45 minute drive and it never seemed to end. Apparently dinner with my family means a night out on the town.  -_-  ))

"Yes, I do believe I did mention that. Come on, Father, you know you need the extra hand." Her father didn't even blink before her grumbled a quick, "Yeah, alright. You start tomorrow." "Splendid, I knew you would see things my way. And I told you that he would hire you." Skylar sat in her little corner beaming like the star she was. Her mother nearly reached the same level of brightness when Kalys had complimented her cooking. "I'm glad you enjoy it. The recipe has been in the family for generations, and each generation has added it's own twist to make it better and better through out the years. I have been trying to teach this one here how to cook but she won't sit still long enough for me to pick up the spoon." Skylar just shrugged and filled her utensil with more food. "I can't hear you over the amazing food you just cooked." And with that she took a huge bite. "Flattery won't get you anywhere with me, Skylar." But she couldn't help but to smile anyway. "Kalys, you may stay as long as you'd like. Our doors are wide open." She added with a warm smile.

((Haha.  I remember those days.))

"Thank you for the job, sir. I can fix the doors too if they are an issue,"  he winked, showing off his quick wit.  Kalys smiled at Skylar.  She reminded him of his own sister who couldn't bring water to boil without burning it.  His enjoyment of the meal fled at the thought of her.  Stop, stop now.  That wasn't your fault.  The food turned to ash in his mouth.  He pretended to be deep in thought and kept eating.  He didn't realize that his left hand was squeezing the life out of his leg until it started to tingle.  His grip shifted to rubbing.  "Food is so good it tricked my leg into going to sleep," he grined, though falsely, to explain his vigorous rubbing of his shin.  He realized Skylar's brother was missing.  "Is your son often absent from meals?" His gaze shifted to Skylar's father.

Animegurl5

"Yeah. It has been some time since he has eaten a single meal with us. Usually we set the place for him and he comes to retreive it to eat elsewhere." Her father said, looking at the empty place where the boy should have been. "Ever since the death of Sebastian he has been rather... distant. Sebastian was actually my twin brother but he passed away after only a few months of life due to illness. For as long as I can remember Jake has been this way, as well as overly protective of me. It's not hard to imagine why but still, it's so sad to see him that way. The only time I have ever eaten with him is on my birthday. But never you mind him, it's not important." She quickly finished her meal and stood up from the table. "Please excuse me for a moment." She smiled at Kalys before grabbing her brother's plate and walking up to his room. Ofcourse he wouldn't be in there but she placed it on his dresser anyways for him to find later. She looked out his window, spotting him practicing with the old spar dummies they had built together.

Kalys sat in silence, unaware of what to say.  "I'm sorry if I said something to upset her...I was unaware."  He stood from the table and searched, finding her staring out of her brother's window.  Placing a hand gently on her shoulder he spoke softly.  "I didn't know.  I apologize if it is a sore subject."  He watched the boy at his practice, cataloging the way he moved, both correctly and incorrectly.  The boy seemed more likely to hurt himself in combat than to hurt his opponent.  "Perhaps all he needs is someone to talk to?  Someone to vent his anger over the situation on?  It is never easy to lose someone....." his voice trailed off as his thoughts once again shifted to his sister.  The way the light sunk away from her eyes as she died.

Animegurl5

Skylar looked over her shoulder at Kalys before returning her gaze to her brother. "No, it's quite alright. I think the part that bothers me the most is all the sadness and sorrow over someone that I didn't even know. I find it somewhat pointless to lose yourself over someone that isn't going to come back. It only hurts you and those who care for you more when one choses that life. One should never forget, that's not what I'm saying... It's just, it shouldn't become the center of your being." She said watching him slip and fall on his face. "Ha, funny how he is the one who taught me all I know and still I can pull it off better than he. Feel free to try and talk with him but I wouldn't start a conversation with Sebastian as a topic. That's a good way to get yourself killed."

He nodded.  "I'll let him recover from his embarrassment from the fall first.  I also need to finish up whatever work your mother was going to do."  He hugged her softly.  "It does indeed pain everyone for him to live as he is choosing to live.  Perhaps I can reach him in some way.  I lost my sister long ago so I know how it feels to lose a sibling."   A sadness crept onto his face.  "It is all too easy to focus only on what is gone instead of what you still have.  A lesson I won't ever forget."  He shook his head.  "But onto happier topics!  Why don't you enjoy cooking?"  His inquiry was solely to joke with her, though his face displayed nothing but seriousness.

Animegurl5

"Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. From the look on your face I can only guess how special she was to you." She paused a moment and then turned towards him with her hands on her hips. "Have you ever tried to cook? It's just so boooooring! All you do is stand there, sometimes for hours preparing a meal that is only going to last about ten minutes. Would you rather do that or go off on adventures, exploring the wild and all of natures wonders? Now do you see why I don't cook. Besides, I'm more likely to be making Skylar's Hand Stew than actual food." She laughed aloud at her own inability to make her own food let alone food for others.

He shook his head and smiled and her impetuous stance.  "Learning to cook is it's own reward!  You can do as much for someone by cooking them a meal as say....saving them from falling to the ground."  Kalys smiled and turned around slowly.  "If the hands in the stew are as cute as yours...it might be a delicious meal.  After all...I hear "lady fingers" are an ingredient in many desserts."  This waif of a girl made him feel almost human again.  It is going to be hard when you finally decide to give up on this charade and go back. "I'm not going back," he whispered.

She playfully shoved his shoulder with an exclaimation of, "That's so gross" and "Eww, I can't believe you said that". It was all good fun though and she enjoyed the company. It had been a while since she had met someone who had the same sense of humor that she had. She saw his lips move but she couldn't quite hear what he said. "Sorry, what was that... Oh nevermind. We have cleaning to do." She smiled and then spun out of the room in a much better mood than when she had entered it.

His voice had shifted to a mockery of a theatrical performance.  Kalys followed her to the kitchen.  It felt natural to be ....this person.  It is because you are hiding who you really are from these people.  Which is handy...for now. the accursed voice wouldn't leave him alone for one minute.  He rolled his sleeves up, careful to not reveal his throwing knife sheaths on each arm.  "Where do we start?"  he asked her.  As an afterthought he added, "I rather like your hair."

Animegurl5

"We start by cleaning the dishes that Mama used to cook with. They have been sitting the longest and if they sit anymore they will be even harder to clean in the long run." Smiled, pulling her hair back into a pony tail to keep it out of the way. "Why thank you. Too bad it has to go up for this, I rather hate my hair up." She finished tying it back and grabbed the large cooking dishes, and piling them next to the sink basin. Putting the plug into the drain she pumped up the water to fill the sink to the perfect height. "This will go alot faster if we create a cleaning chain. So pick your job, scrubbing or drying?"

"I will take scrubbing!  You don't have to help you know, I can handle it.  Unless you," he shot her a look, "just enjoy being around me."  He picked a dish and dunked it into the water, scrubbing at it furiously to remove the tiniest spots.  He remembered being younger when he and his sister used to clean together.  He always preferred drying then but felt like scrubbing the dishes would somehow scrub away the earlier events of the day.  He remembered the pouch of coin at his pocket.  "Does your town have a courier that goes to the other surrounding towns??"

Animegurl5

"You wish this was all about you." She said slyly though now that she thought about it, she really did like spending time with him. His question brought her out of the clouds and back down to the kitchen. She thought about it a moment, grabbing a towel then the absolutely spotless dish. "Oh you mean Teddy? Yeah, he goes out and about but only returns one a week. He doesn't return to this town for another three days though. Why do you ask?" She kept her eyes on the dish, gently saoking up all the water to leave it as dry as possible.

Animegurl5

"I have always been good with my hands. I can sew, build, dry dishes... But just because I am doesn't mean I do, which I think is what bothers my mother so much. I have so much talent and all I want to do is explore. She thinks I have knack for falling into danger... Though you have already witnessed that bit. "I've seen the falling...but not necessarily into danger."  He grinned at her.  Knife in her back.  There you go.  No one would be surprised.  Shaking his head silenced the voice again.  "Exploring isn't a bad thing.  I've spent a good bit of my life doing exactly that, though mine was more self-exploratory than based on location.  All it takes is a bit of good luck and the drive to keep going.  Even when its rainy, muddy, and horrible you have to keep going."  He smirked.  "Someone once told me, as we climbed up out of the mud to continue pushing his wagon, that we fall only to prove to ourselves that we can get up again."

"I like that. I hope you don't mind, but I plan to use that someday." She smiled amd dryed the last of the cooking dishes. "I'll be right back. Just need to collect the dishes we ate from." ((okay back!))

"Me, sneaky?  I recall YOU getting the drop on me in the grass.  I am not the slightest bit sneaky.  I'm just going to talk to the boy.  Don't worry...I have my own brand of surprises in store for him."  Reaching into his pouch from earlier, Kalys withdrew a black rubber ball.  "He won't even see it coming."  He grinned and threw it against the side of the house.  It ricocheted off their to bounce against one of the dummies and then into her brother's head.  "There we go.  Now he'll be paying attention."  Kalys pulled his cloak around himself, lowered his hood around his face and took a circuitous route to pick up the ball before her brother saw him.  "Bad night?" he inquired from the shadows, placing the ball back into its pouch.

Animegurl5

Skylar had to hide the laughter that bubbled in the back of her throat as the ball struck the back of her brother's head. Having not been paying much attention he lost his balance and fell forward when the ball struck. "Hey, what was that for?" He raged, getting up and looking about but saw no one. It wasn't until a few moments later that Kalys spoke to him. "What ever would give you that idea? And even if I were, how does it make logical sense to throw a ball at me to make me feel better?!" Jake growled, but it was mostly out of his hurt pride.

"You don't pay attention to your surroundings.  A strike can come from anywhere.  That's twice you've fallen today which proves you are off balance, even in the best of times."  Kalys stepped out of the shadows.  'The question is this:  how can you protect your family, and sister, if you can't even stand on your own two legs?"  Kalys remembered this lesson well.

Animegurl5

"I can stand on my own two legs just fine, thank you." Jake growled staring at their new guest. "Why are you even here anyway? You hardly know my sister and yet you follow her home like a lost puppy, what is it that you hope to gain?" He questioned holding his ground despite how nervous he felt about this guy. There was something off about the way he was with Skylar and how different he was out here. "I swear to God if you hurt my sister..."

Skylar watched from around the corner and up a tree, which was much safer to climb. She smiled at her brother's bold attitude and his courage but she knew it to be tinged with a slightly foolish pride. She smiled and watched, waiting to see what her new friend would teach Jake through example and herself by observation.

"I know vastly more than you do, youngling.  You would be wise to not turn your back on someone you suspect is dangerous.  Words are one thing," he pounced forward, grabbed one of the boy's wrists, planted his feet and hips and spun the boy to the ground, " actions are another.  Be careful, or you will find that standing on your own two feet isn't enough."

He released the boys wrist and walked towards Skylar slowly, shaking his head.  He made eye contact with her and shrugged.

Skylar laughed as her brother did yet another faceplant into the ground. He stayed there for a little while even after he was released, obviously his pride being damaged by Kalys. Hopping down from her perch, she landed beside Kalys with a playful glare. "You know I am never going to hear the end of this, right?" Even still she continued to laugh and completely missed the look her brother gave her as she walked away. He stalked away into the house and up into his room where he slammed the door and completley ignored his food.  Skylar, however, was not going to let Kalys' little trick go unnoticed. "So how exactly does your magic work? Just throw an object and think of your target... Make it find it's own way? It's quite interesting, if I do say so myself."

Animegurl5

"I accept your challenge, kind sir, but if I were to tell you about my own magic...well there wouldn't be much point in trying to use it to my advantage." She smirked, twirling around in a circle as if she hadn't just accepted a sort of sparring match. "I want to test you however... See these surrounding trees? The land they sit on is our own. There is a perimeter of stakes that mark our land, that is how far out we may go. Let's see how well you do on my home turf, shall we? I'll even be so kind as to either let you take the first move or a ten second headstart. Your choice." Her playful smile was gone and was replaced by a more serious mask... It was hardly ever seen by anyone, mostly since many didn't know of her fighting skills... But anyone who knew her well enough, knew she took challenges quite seriously.

He stood balanced on the balls of his feet.  "I need no such charity as a head start or a first move.  What are the rules?  Weapons?  Bare handed?"  While asking he had begun removing his cloak and tossed it to the side, it landing with a muffled thump.  He removed his wrist sheath and tossed it to his coat as well.  "Then again," he said, unfastening the several knives on his belt and adding them to the growing pile of personal belongings, "I don't suppose the rules matter.  You show me what you know, and I will do my best to return the favor."  He extended one hand, bent slightly at the elbow, fingers gesturing for her to come forward.  His two hands then met, fist meeting palm and bowed.  "Kalys Trevarden, no particular style."  Good, using an assumed name.

Removing his foot from hers, he returned to his original position.  "Once again, if you please."

"No theory huh?" Just instinct then. The thought didn't appeal to her much but that was her problem to begin with, over thinking things. Hopping back about a foot, letting out an exhale of breath. He ducked on instinct and rolled forward.  You can thank me for the warning later.  Kalys came up and nodded to her.  "Very good.  You should rely less on your magic and more on actually fighting.  Then learn to incorporate it into your own style.  Acrobatics are all fun and games until you learn how to hurt someone with them," he grinned, turning the commonly used phrase on it's ear.  You could have stuck a knife in her while she was in midflight.  He nodded.  He knew what he could have done but it wasn't about hurting her.  It was about giving her a chance.  He knew he'd have to get rough with her at some point.

Animegurl5

"What can I say, I was taught by my brother and we both know how well that turned out." She looked down at the patch of springy vines and had to smile. "Nature isn't one to fight but rather assist in ways that it can. "I already know that in a real fight I would be out numbered and most deffinately out matched. The magic is the only thing I have as a safe card. For some it will be a surprise and that's just the chance I would need. I guess I never really thought of trying to actually hurt somebody with it but rather as a chance to get away. You've already burst that bubble, however." She grumbled the last part, upset that she had missed.... again. Shifting her stance slightly she was facing Kalys now. "If you are so amazing, then let's see what you've got."

Remaining on the ground Skylar growled as she crossed her arms deffiantly. "Alright I've got it... You have skills and the rest of us mortals don't." Letting her arms drop in defeat she turned her head to look at him with tears in her eyes. Her bottom lip quivered slightly as she looked just on the boundary of breaking down sobbing.

He knelt and took her face lightly in her hand.  "I had years of training, training so brutal that if you didn't learn, you died."  He removed his tunic, his form, while well muscled was a patchwork of scars.  Many so deep that they looked as if they'd open back up at the merest touch.  "I didn't die.  But I'd hardly call what I've done since then living."  His voice was soft.  "Your magic isn't something you should depend on.  The best way to avoid a fight is to not fight.  I learned long ago that I was useless.  The world is infinitely big.  I've been trained in combat...but what do I really change?  I can hurt people, yes, but violence begets violence and the cycle never ends.  There is always someone better, someone quicker, stronger, with more training.  There is no shame in defeat if you can stand and live.  The only shame is when you have to end a human life."  His eyes were sad.  "My sister....she....she didn't survive.  They put her up against me.  We had to wear masks to conceal our identities.  I grew up with her...knew the way she moved.  I knew it was her," he paused.  "And at the moment when it mattered the most...I still had to kill her."

"Oh, I'm so sorry.. That's terrible. But there really is one thing that you forgot to keep in mind. Never underestimate a female's way of survival." While Kalys had been talking she had shifted her feet under her so that she sprang up and connected her palm gently but still firmly under his chin pushing it up so he faced the sky. Then she slipped around, grabbing his arm and pulling it around with her as she kicked the back of his knee, his wrist caught in her fingers and his elbow pinned with her other hand. "I can't help but to agree with you on the matter of not fighting, but sometimes even when you don't want it trouble comes your way. Even the most innocent and pure hearted get caught in the middle of things that alter them forever. I'm sorry that it happened to you. I can't imagine having to fight my own brother, I would have been beat the moment I realized it was him. I hope your sister found peace though, for a life like that is no way to live."

Kalys felt the knife in his boot press against his free hand and let it go.  "I'm not certain that you'd have been able to move...but if we consider this the second half of our duel then the point goes to you my dear."  He sounded resigned and tired.  Thinking of what he did to his sister always shocked him to the core.  The brutality that had been trained into him had come out in those final moments.  She'd never known it was him.  He'd kept his mask on even as he crushed her throat beneath his foot, tears streaming down his masked face as he did what had to be done.  "I...I have to go," he said suddenly.  Shaking her grip off and walking to his belongings.  He replaced his gear and disappeared off into the trees, remembering what she said about the family's property line.  He moved with speed to put distance between himself and Skylar.  "Don't follow me," his voice seemed to whisper back to her out of the night air.

"Wait! Where are you going?" She knew that she wasn't going to get an answer but she watched as Kalys stalked off in through the trees. She made no move to follow him but then again she hardly made a move at all. "You promised to have dinner." It was almost an after thought as she sat on the ground facing the direction in which Kalys had left. You are so stupid. How could you even think that for a moment that he would stick around you? She brought her knees up to her chin, her arms wrapping around them as she sat there watching the trees.

He sat just off the property line digging a hole.  It hadn't occured to him to get rid of the weapon with which he'd slain the merchant.  Back to being a professional now? the voice chided him.  The voice of his sister.  "No, back to leaving you and this life behind me," he buried the knife quickly and heard her voice scream in rage and then fade as he covered it with dirt.  He made a mental marker of where she was if he needed her and turned, walking back to the property line.  He circled around so that he'd come behind Skylar.  He made no attempt to hide his approach and sat down next to her, facing the direction he'd walked off in only moments before.  "I needed a moment," he said as if it were perfectly natural to just vanish and reappear at will.

Skylar squealed with joy before wrapping her arms around his neck in a lopsided hug. "I thought you'd gone and left me." She didn't even bother to let go, she was too tired even to move at the moment so she just kind of hung their anyway. "Hey... Why'd you go behind me rather than just back the way you came? From the timing you couldn't have gotten too far though you did take your merry time walking around in a big circle." She raised her eyebrow but thought nothing of it. Kalys was different, strange and mysterious and oh so hard to get out of her mind. "What have I gotten myself into." She whispered though it was barely even a breath.

His arms wrapped around her waist.  "I was walking and then remembered you promised me dinner...and your mother's cooking...and I just couldn't leave."  Kalys smiled down to her before wrapping her in a tight hug and spinning her around.  He heard the end of her question and leaned down, his forehead touching hers.  "You've gotten whatever you want."

Her eyes opened slightly in surprise, not expecting him to have heard her. She let her eyes wander up to his and then blushed. It was a nice feeling though, sitting here in the arms of somebody she could trust. With a smile, Skylar rested her head on Kalys' shoulder and sighed. "Yeah, Mama's cooking is the best isn't it?" She laughed quietly to herself.
