The Galactic Federation is smaller and weaker now more than ever. It was a formerly-great alliance of alien species, now fractured and on the brink of destruction at the hands of the Rebels, a large, technologically advanced, organized faction of militaristic human-supremacists. What few ships and bases that remain are under siege by both Rebels and pirates. Though the Galactic Federation was once a powerful peacekeeping force, the civil war with the Rebellion severely crippled the Federation, to the point that the Federation has withdrawn most of its forces to a single sector.

While details are scarce about the Rebellion, we do know that they are a human supremacist movement that has virtually defeated the Galactic Federation in a civil war that has killed millions. Some evidence suggests the Rebels believe humans will never reach their full potential while stifled by the Federation and its policy of equality towards aliens. They will go to great extremes to aid other humans, and some will even let an enemy go if the crew is composed entirely of humans.
FTL: Faster than Light is a roguelike-like space ship simulator by Subset Games. It is a pretty fantastic and fun experience, and has enough plot in its universe to make it flexible and adaptable for a group roleplay.

Players will participate on a Federation ship carrying information which is vital to the survival of the Federation, and must progress to the eighth sector to deliver it to the commander of the Federation fleet. This ship has a maximum of 4 players. Should more interest be spurred, other crews could man ships from different factions, such as the Rebellion, Pirates, or native species' fleets.
Currently there are 8 Species to choose from:
Human
Hailing from Earth, Humans are one of the most common races in the galaxy. Humans comprise the majority of the Galactic Federation and all the Rebellion. They're pretty average.

Engi
Though their current home planetary systems are well documented, the true origins of the emotionless Engi are a mystery; it is known that the majority of their bodies are made from trillions of nanomachines, which give the illusion of a silvery 'skin' with a metallic sheen, and that they can adopt different shapes to better cope with their environment, although they generally maintain a humanoid form, which most other races are habitually more comfortable with. The Engi also wield powerful knowledge of machinery, and are generally natural mechanics - especially when they're only expected to service and repair comparatively primitive human technology. While the Engi are extremely intelligent, their primarily robotic body composition is very fragile. The delicate and very technical inner workings of an Engi are not nearly as rugged as regular organic material, like that found in humans. As a result, Engi usually make poor fighters; however, their immaculate knowledge of mechanics coupled with their immunity to most diseases as a result of their cybernetic bodies can make them excellent allies. The Engi still require oxygen to survive despite their mostly robotic makeup, however. The many scientific anomalies of the Engi have been points of contention between human scientists for years; they argue incessantly over whether the Engi are organic lifeforms by definition, or rather sentient machines. Most accept the notion, though, that they're simply a bridge between the two.

Despite a nonaggression pact with the Rebels, the Engi are the strongest supporters of the Galactic Federation, and have been secretly aiding them when possible. They consider reestablishing the Federation to be the highest priority. The Federation outsourced designing of the new Stealth Cruiser to the Engi. In addition to the Federation, the Engi are allies of the Zoltan. Since the collapse of the Federation they have been preyed upon incessantly by the Mantis, who regard them as ideal slaves.

Mantis
The violent and hostile Mantis appear, to Humans anyway, to resemble man-sized Praying Mantises, although they are much more aggressive than their namesakes. Whereas praying mantises kill prey merely to survive, the much larger and more intelligent Mantis race kill remorselessly to suit their own personal agendas- usually without survival as a concern, making for a pitiless and brutal insectoid warrior species. While humans and most other species have manufactured handheld weaponry to utilize in combat, the Mantis usually default to their agility, and sharpened exoskeletal appendages to tear through their enemies, and their skill as warriors goes almost unchallenged in 1v1 combat even against the rock species. The Mantis also possess extremely acidic saliva which can burn through flesh and melt most metal alloys. While Mantis excel at combat, especially personal combat, they are the least adept of all the races at technical repairs. They have overcome this problem by frequently taking Engi slaves. Engi slaves can be found on a majority of their bases and ships. Though some individual Mantises have been known to work with the Galactic Federation, the race as a whole tends to be deceptive, opportunistic and untrustworthy, and can commonly be found piloting their signature style of well armed spacecraft, hunting down weaker enemies in pursuit of their belongings. Human children are told tales of their red ships, and of the Mantis invasion of Earth.

Rockmen
The Rockmen, as they have been nicknamed by humans, are called so because of their unique skin which according to scientific experiments can be nearly as hard and rugged as solid rock. Additionally, the Rockmen are extremely well conditioned and physically strong to compensate for their thick rock-like skin, giving them an astounding resilience. As a result of their physical attributes, the Rockmen have evolved throughout their race's existence into a warrior race which values personal strength and martial prowess over nearly everything else. While the Rockmen are generally not an adventurous race, and can only be consistently located within their own territories' borders, the Rockmen are liable to open fire on any ship they encounter that they aren't familiar with. Still, there are always exceptions to the rule, and having Rockmen crew can be very beneficial. Also, from random occurrences, some Rockmen seem to be quite religious.

Zoltan
With the majority of their bodies composed of pure, harnessable energy, the Zoltan are ambivalent towards the Galactic Federation. Whilst a deeply officious and obtuse people, they generally favour diplomacy over acts of aggression and are known for being fair and just in their dealings with others. Due to their alliance with the Engi, Zoltans often appear in Engi Homeworlds or the various Engi-Controlled Sectors of space, although they inhabit their own home systems as well. Being ingenious experts of technology, the Zoltan race pioneered a unique ship-based shielding technology which can be found on nearly every Zoltan vessel. These shields are very difficult to breach, however they cannot regenerate during a battle - unless a Shield Overcharger drone is deployed. Therefore, once they are impacted by enemy fire enough to deactivate them, Zoltan vessels must rely on conventional shielding systems. They and the Engi control many sectors, but they themselves are rarely seen outside them.

Slug
The xenophobic, leisurely Slugs are the third rarest race in the galaxy, behind the mythical Crystal and Lanius. Their home sectors are all engulfed in enormous nebulae, which lead to them evolving unique psychic abilities in order to overcome the general lack of visibility. As a result, Slug ships aren't built with sensors; the psychic powers of the crew are just as effective, if not more so, than any electronic system. This leaves them at a distinct disadvantage outside nebulae however, so that even within their sectors they are almost never seen outside the concealing clouds. While not as aggressive as the Rockmen or the Mantis, Slugs are both greedy and deceitful. They prey upon ships that wander into their home systems, often leading them into traps, as well as resort to piracy in other systems.

Crystal
Descended from a splinter group of Rockmen who rejected their species' violent ways long ago, the Crystalmen are almost completely unknown in the galaxy, having hidden from all other sentient life. The Crystal people are peaceful and inquisitive, but should they be exposed to the outside world again after their long isolation, they have a hard time, as there is a massive, nigh-unstoppable Rebel Fleet that could force them into the fight.

This race is not available until the Crystal Homeworlds have been exposed by a crew's expedition.

Lanius
The Lanius are described as a metallic scavenger race prone to aggression, whose biological composition somehow drains oxygen from the rooms they occupy, making them potentially deadly adversaries.

The Lanius are scavengers – metallic lifeforms that rely on the absorption of minerals to sustain themselves. Their society ebbs and flows in hibernation cycles; they may lie dormant for many years, even while hurtling through space. As soon as they become aware of significant metal deposits they reawaken. Usually this occurs in the dying stages of a galactic civilization or in the wake of intergalactic war.

The Lanius can spend decades in dormancy, hiding away undetected from the other races, and awaken in the aftermath of a galactic war or the end of a civilization to feed upon the leftovers as scavengers. It is surmised that they are the reason why there is so little evidence of ancient civilizations in universe, for the Lanius have absorbed it all. Now, in the aftermath of the Federation-Rebel war, they are awakening once again. Lanius appear in Abandoned Sectors, areas of Federation space that were hit the hardest from the war and are now abandoned, from where they scavenge metal. While often misunderstood, they have established diplomatic relations with the Federation

Reports of reawakened Lanius have appeared in many of the war-torn and abandoned sectors of Federation Space. Their arrival has created panic as they indiscriminately seek out sources of metal – although more diplomatic individuals have suggested that they can be reasoned with.

In addition to this, there are also 6 Factions:
Federation
The Federation is a formerly-great alliance of alien species, now fractured and on the brink of destruction at the hands of the Rebels. What few ships and bases that remain are under siege by both Rebels and pirates, but they will help you if they can, if you are with them.

The Federation is composed of a group of races united in the galaxy to pose a great strength in numbers and are the main protagonists in FTL. It is known that the Federation treats races with equality, though the Slugs were discriminated against within it, allegedly on account of their secretive and conspiratorial character.

Federation ships have a white hull with orange stripes.

Rebellion
The Rebels are a large, technologically advanced, organized faction of militaristic human-supremacists. It is implied that a large section of the Federation's former human populace became what is now the Rebellion, which seeks to overthrow the Federation and establish dominion over all known alien species. The Rebel fleet has already destroyed most of the Federation, and relentlessly hunts down the player throughout the game.

Rebel ships can be identified by their orange hull and cyan stripes. Rebel crews are all human. The rebels also use AI ships, which are dark gray robotic ships built by the rebels to scout ahead of the fleet. They have no oxygen room, so boarding them is dangerous.

Pirates
Other than rebels, space pirates are the most common enemies found in sectors. Pirates are groups of outlaws in the galaxy who aim only to earn power and money, and almost always resort to violence to acquire it. Pirates ships appear as normal ships. However, they have crudely painted purple markings on the hull and often have a smaller but more diverse crew than the normal ship would have otherwise.

Mercenaries
Mercenaries are similar to pirates, but they do not use violence to acquire what they want unless they are attacked first. Mercenary ships have the same markings as pirate ships, and also have a diverse crew.

Slavers
Slavers are considered by most to be the worst form of criminal. Slavers will find weak ships, take crew members from them, and enslave them. These slaves are sold off to other ships for a sum of money. Again, slaver ships have the same markings as pirate ships.

Civilians
Civilians are people who don't really take either side and just want to stay out of the war. They have their own forces that defend them, however, they aren't heavily armed.

Current Squadron

The Kestrel

The Kestrel class cruiser was decommissioned from the Federation fleet years ago. After a number of refits and updating, this classic ship is ready for battle. It's a gunship, with 4 weapon slots and 2 drone slots. It's designed to blow enemies away, and does so equipped with an Artemis Missile Launcher, and a Burst Laser II.

Hull: The Kestrel has a standard hull, and can absorb up to 30 damage.
Power Reactor: Base 8 energy, can be upgraded to a maximum of 25 energy.
Tier I Piloting: Requires 1 Energy, can be upgraded by two tiers. Requires a pilot to function.
Tier I Doors: Requires 1 Energy, can be upgraded to Blast Doors and Improved Blast Doors, and manned to provide Super Blast Doors.
Tier I Sensors: Requires 1 Energy, can be upgraded by two tiers, and manned to provide a third tier for more vision.
Tier I Oxygen: Requires 1 Energy, can be upgraded twice to supply oxygen faster.
Tier II Shields: Requires 2 Energy, can be upgraded up to 6 times for a maximum of a Tier 4 Shield. Each additional shield requires 2 energy to function. When manned, shields recharging rate is increased.
Tier II Engines: Requires 2 Energy, can be upgraded up to 6 times to increase evasion rate and increase the FTL recharge rate. While manned, the ship gains an additional evasion bonus.
Tier III Weapons: Requires 3 Energy to use all base weapons, can be upgraded up to 5 times to enable more weapons to be used. Manning the weapons controls reduces weapons' charge rates.
Tier I Medbay: Requires 1 Energy, functions unmanned, can be upgraded by two tiers to increase healing rate.

The Sparrow

The Sparrow class fighter is a current model used by the Federation fleet. Small and agile, it mostly relies upon its nimble ability to get in and out of battles quickly. It's a small scout, with 2 weapon slots. It's designed for quick engagements or shield-elimination, and with a pair of reliable Dual Shot Lasers, it gives a lot of bang for its buck.

Hull: With a lighter hull, the Sparrow can only absorb up to 15 damage.
Power Reactor: Base 7 energy, can be upgraded to a maximum of 25 energy.
Tier III Piloting: Requires 1 Energy, can be upgraded by two tiers. Requires a pilot to function.
Tier I Engines: Requires 1 Energy, can be upgraded up to 6 times to increase evasion rate and increase the FTL recharge rate. While manned, the ship gains an additional evasion bonus.
Tier II Weapons: Requires 2 Energy to use all base weapons, can be upgraded up to 6 times to enable more weapons to be used. Manning the weapons controls reduces weapons' charge rates.

Glad to have you onboard ^^

At least two more people and I'll whip up some application forms, and more stuff to work with.

Definitely interested! I'm a huge fan of FTL, so if there's still space, count me in.

Quick question, though: will character mortality and / or failure be part of the RP mechanics? A constant sense of real, potentially lethal danger was a central tenement of the game, and while it'd be way too harsh for an RP (e.g. having a character arbitrarily killed off by a random event), having some sense of peril might help maintain the FTL spirit.

Jason

We currently have enough interest to run 1 ship of 8 players. The Kestrel has been added to the squadron, as well as the Sparrow, a Federation Scout ship, should we get lucky and gather another 4 players, but this scout isn't necessary for the sake of the roleplay.

Application forms are now ready and able to be posted. The OP has also been updated with the current list of ships a person can apply for.

I will shortly be updating the OP with a list of weapons available, as well as augments later.

This is FTL, it is rogue-like, and people can - and will - die. Random events' cruelty will be able to be adjusted based on the wit of the players, but nobody is safe in this game. Nonetheless, people can reapply should they be perhaps on a slaver ship or crew for hire at merchant beacons, and if the Kestrel's Medbay is replaced by a cloning chamber, well, death can effectively be reversed. Depends how lucky we are really =)

MissFire

Name: Cari'xilliya D'quarii (aka Dee, Cee, or Cee Dee)
Race: Zoltan
Sex: Female
Occupation: Kestrel, Shield Engineer

Appearance: Like the rest of her people, Dee's body is composed almost entirely of, and radiates pure energy. Harmless to other races, the residual energy that radiates from her is easily absorbed by nearby ship systems, providing extra power to any room or device nearby. While most think the Zoltan are simply floating clouds of energy of some sort, that is simply not true. Her physical body is anatomically similar to humanoids, though her skin has a soft, almost rubbery texture to it. Her body's rubbery nature makes her resistant to piercing and damage, but crew should be warned; if damaged she radiates enough energy to overload nearby equipment and when a Zoltan dies the energy within their body undergoes a mass chain reaction that causes what could be called a 'self destruct' and they explode.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, Dee is quite curvy and attractive, even by human standards. Despite her off-beat personality, she's been known to draw the eye of males and females from just about any race. As beings of energy, Zoltan don't usually acquiesce to wearing clothes but Dee seems to enjoy dressing up, finding it a nice change of pace. Be thankful. Were she to strut around nude the rest of the crew might be too distracted to fight.

Personality: Cloudcuckoolander and a Bunny-Ears Lawyer. Brilliant with technology, but deemed 'odd' or just flat out 'insane' by most people she comes into contact with, Dee often speaks in nonsense that leaves other people scratching their heads. Terrible with Galactic Common, she speaks in broken sentences and with strange structure. She lacks in social graces and often acts simply in pursuit of her own instincts or curiosity.

Biography:
-Grew up poverty-stricken on a backwater colony called Errata IV.
-The colony eventually erupted into civil war, the poor folks of the slums rising up against the security forces and corporations. The war lasted five years.
-Only surviving family member is her father. The rest died in the war.
-Eventually saved up enough money to get herself an education in the sciences, but her 'quirky' personality found her mocked and shunned by teachers and students alike.
-After being kicked out of school she started to study on her own.
-Met up with a man called Zoltan The Seer, a human claiming to see visions of the future. Dee followed him for a while, believing in his gifts.
-Turns out he was a filthy liar and was later torn apart by attack dogs at the behest of an angry merchant.
-In an effort to continue her education at an institute of higher learning, Dee 'borrowed' money from The Red Band, a group of pirates.
-They are still very angry to this day.
-After completing her studies, she joined The Federation and was stationed on The Kestrel.

The Kestrel Seems much better for us. For Megan I threw in communications as well as Sensors since it feels like those two would be connected.
=====================================

Name: Megan Carter

Race: Human.

Sex: Female

Occupation: Kestrel Sensors and Comm Officer.

Appearance: Auburn haired Caucasian Human. Former Resident of Mars. As such she can usually be seen with sunglasses on due to having adapted to Mar's low light level, she wears her Federation uniform with pride and as a reminder of her cause, she just wishes it didn't cling so tightly to her body. Since she's not a real combat fighter, like the Fed-Marines, she only carries a small caliber side arm with her. In accordance with the latest Federation regulations (due to the constant boarding attacks by Mantis raiders and Rebels) she has trained and made herself as fit as she could. While not a master fighter she can hold her own, especially against Rebel goons, for a little while at least.

Personality: Dedicated to the Federation, loyal to its ideals and willing to die for it. Perhaps to the point of obsession or of Fanaticism. If it wasn't for her high opinion of Engis, after having met many during her service, she might have joined up with the Rebellion in order to get vengeance and wipe out the Mantis for their raids into Fed space and their attack on Earth. But seeing how they would likely enslave Engis and the other friendly(ish) races out there, she throws her lot in with the Federation to the very end.

Megan is hardworking, serious and focused on her job. She could have easily gone career, if the Federation wasn't in so much turmoil at the moment. Still Despite her super serious side, she does enjoy the simpler things such as conversation and the occasional joke. Yet she makes it no secret that she prefers the company of Humans and Engis. Still that doesn't mean she is a raging bigot, and is open minded enough to work other races for extended to indefinite periods of time, especially if they are cute.

Biography: Born and Raised on Mars, the main trade hub for the Sol System, which led her to interact with Engi aliens many times, learning how to speak some basic words from their language. She even listened to the tales of one who worked with her at her first job, telling her tales of the universe and where it had been before reaching Mars, giving her the drive she needed to eventually join the Federation. During her tour aboard the TFC-Mombasa she worked with the communications staff, not really wanting to be in anything combat related. Still it didn't help much when the Rebellion appeared, everyone had to become a fighter then.

The Mombasa had been doing operations against the Rebellion during the civil war, and was attacked by two mantis ships in a row. Their systems were already overloaded and their engines were only one jump away from overloading, when a Rebel Drone ship caught their distress signal, armed with Ion weapons and missiles, the Mombasa never stood a chance. Another Federation ship had managed to pick up her escape pod and she returned to Federation controlled territory, eager to get pay back for the loss of her ship. It just so happened that at the shipyard she found herself in, some Fed officers were looking for a few good volunteers for an important mission. And that's how she found herself on the Kestrel, waiting with a ditzy Zoltan for more crew members to arrive. But maybe this mission will prove to improve her oppinions of more races than just the Engi's. The Zoltan is rather cute to be honest.

Edit: And now, the rather more complete character sheet.

Name: Zev Wulfrun
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Occupation:  Kestrel, Artillerist

Appearance: Pale, lean, and with a furtive gleam to his clever eyes, Zev looks as if he’s descended from a long line of deceitful advisors and treacherous viziers – an air that isn’t exactly ameliorated by his meticulous grooming and carefully measured words. To really top things off, his taste in accessories and equipment is also suspiciously expensive: he possesses a set of gold-plated pens, a masterwork las-pistol, lavish taste in clothes, and no forthcoming explanation as to where this wealth comes from.

A shimmering Rebel insignia adorns his left hand, though on this one occasion his explanation is innocent enough: he was once left stranded behind enemy lines when Rebels unexpectedly stormed a spaceport, and quickly adopted the glimmering tattoo to blend in with enemy sympathisers. Surprisingly, his story was actually verified by the Federation’s military police, though it’s anyone’s guess why he hasn’t had the tattoo removed since. Maybe he thinks it might be come in useful? Maybe the glowing ink was really expensive to get? Or maybe everyone’s been questioning his integrity for so long, he’s taken to deliberately goading his detractors.

Like most Federation personal, Zev keeps up with the regimented physical requirements, though there are some unexpected reserves hidden in his otherwise lean body: Zev’s grip is as strong as a vice, and he has the reflexes of a caffeinated serpent. He’ll never be able to stand against a professional gunner, far less an inhuman Rockman or Mantis, but it’d still be a mistake to underestimate him, especially if an enemy comes between Zev and his path of retreat.

Personality: “If a mad scientist merged the DNA of a sewer rat, a venomous snake, and a corporate lawyer, they’d probably end up with another Zev Wulfrun.” So reads an annotation on Zev’s service record. It says a lot that all his superior officers agree with the sentiment; it says even more than Zev genuinely thought it was a compliment.

Cautious, shrewd, cold, and adaptable: Zev is a creature that acts through degrees, preferring to worm his way to success through a thousand no-loss scenarios rather than one almighty roll of the dice. It’s a philosophy that’s served him well, and while meticulousness and pragmatism mightn’t be the most endearing of qualities, it’s kept him alive. Many people suspect him of cowardice, and some have even gone so far as to vocalise their disdain, but he nevertheless makes for an excellent choice of artillerist: in every tactical simulation he’s undertaken, Zev proves the old adage that a fox’s cunning can kill more than a wolf’s savagery. With a detailed understanding of Newtonian physics, ship architecture, and almost every weapons system the Federation has developed, Zev is good at what he does, and this singular fact keeps his skills in demand, even if the man himself has a black cloud cast over his name.

Despite his cruel and clinical approach to bloodshed, Zev isn’t aimlessly malicious. There was a time when he actually believed in things, not least of all principles, but the rebellion has since left him world-weary and bitter. The knowledge that he joined the losing side has only entrenched his languid cynicism further, and merely surviving the Federation’s impending defeat seems to be his primary objective (though personal enrichment comes a close second). Zev can still be depended upon to operate a ship’s offensive systems, of course – far better than most, he’d be hasty to add – but it’s unlikely he’d ever hold his ground in a firefight prior to hell freezing over. As he sees it, he's really more of a survivor than a soldier...

Biography: It’s hard to say whether Zev is the luckiest or unluckiest person to ever serve in the Federation. Of the last six ships he’s served on, five have been met with catastrophe, and every time he’s managed to escape unscathed. The disasters are on his service record for all to see: Farlonix IV, where the rest of the crew were eaten by a hideous bog-creature; Tannoy Station, where a group of intriguingly muscled courtesans turned out to be Rebel commandos in disguise; the Black Reef Nebula, where a pirate’s missile blasted the airlock controls right after the captain vented all the oxygen to extinguish a fire… and these are just the first three.

This constant misfortune – and his uncanny ability to escape when his peers don’t – has led many officers to cast aspersions on his courage, loyalty, or both. Despite his dubious record, however, the Federation Investigate Unit has cleared him of any substantial wrongdoing on every occasion, and never saw fit to suspend him from active duty. Still, his reputation is blighted to say the least, and the whispers and glares at his back are becomingly increasingly overt with every unfortunate incident he survives. Zev, for his part, has long since ceased to care what others think, though the caprices of fate and the distasteful necessities of war have left him disillusioned and ruthless.

He wasn’t always like this, though. Back when the rebellion first started, there was still a certain decency to Zev, a genuine desire to do good. Born to a large but financially stable family, we was afforded a good education at one of the more civilised planets, and eventually attained a respectable position in a research firm that developed mechanical prototypes. It’s entirely possible that he might’ve ended up heading a research grant of his own one day, but all this was cut short in the lead-up to the rebellion. As political unrest became increasingly widespread, the Federation began aggressive recruiting potential artillerists – in essence, anyone who could calculate a vector and spell ‘thermodynamics’. Zev was inevitably drawn to the lucrative employment prospects and, thinking the unrest would blow over in a few months’ time, signed up with the Federation.

From there, things got progressively worse for both the Federation and Zev personally. Political disunity escalated into the near-collapse of the Federation, and full blown rebellion. Zev’s ship went from enforcing gunboat diplomacy to travelling into live warzones, where the other ships actually shot back. Zev witnessed atrocities, then acts of retribution that were every bit as repugnant. Terrible things happened on a seemingly arbitrary basis: bad luck on Farlonix IV, an idiotic captain on Tannoy Station, an unavoidable tragedy in the Black Reef Nebula. Luck and a ‘risk adverse’ personality kept Zev alive throughout, but it has left him jaded and disenchanted: as far as he can tell, cowards outlive heroes, looting is an excellent pathway to wealth, and cruel men win wars over good men. These life lessons haven’t exactly had a positive impact on Zev’s personal growth as a human being.

Since then, there have been several more tragedies and an equal number of suspiciously fortunate tales about how Zev survived. They are extensively documented who any and all who wish to read them (the findings for the Federation Investigative Unit are public documents), though many captains remain sceptical about his loudly proclaimed innocence. Still, so long as there is a Federation fleet left, there’ll be a pressing need to kill a lot of Rebels, and Zev’s skillset ensure that he’s rarely idle for long.

Question: How will we do sectors? and jumps? cuz in the game there are three types of sectors and then usually there are three subtypes of sectors

eg: Friendly, Enemy and Nebula. and in friendly it can be Civilian sector, Engi sector, or Zoltan sector. with enemy it can be Rockman sector, mantis sector and rebel sector. and with jumps well jumps are random, most times something happens but sometimes it doesn't and then there are disaster jumps, (ion storm Pulsar, solar flare._) Store jumps, and distress signal jumps and ship/battle jumps. so how will we do that. and taking that in mind maybe it will be a better idea to do this as a type of dice rolling game

Name:Electra Logan

Race: Human

Sex: Female

Occupation:  Kestrel - Gunnery

Appearance:  Electra is lean and athletic with a pale complexion that seems to accompany all spacers.  She is usually sporting a pair of goggles on the top of her head when on duty.  Her body is adorned with a tattoo with her former mercenary company sigil and the scars from previous fights.

Personality:
Electra is not afraid of a fight, and most of the time is expecting one.  Electra is always armed with either a pistol or a knife and she is not afraid to use either.  Her time as a mercenary has given her a hard outlook on life when on the job but she also tends to let loose when at a safe port of call.

Biography:
Electra Logan was part of a Mercenary ships company.  She fought against pirates, took on all manner of assignments and occasionally took part in a bit piracy.  Manning the ships guns was the main part of her task but she also took part in boarding parties to seize surrendered or defeated vessels.  That was before the Rebellion started.  When the rebellion did break out, the Mercenary ships crew was torn between loyalties and Electra left to take advantage of the Federations offer of amnesty for those who joined.  It just so happened that she was waiting for an assignment when a call was put out for volunteers for an important assignment.

Fret not, the Kestrel (based on the above apps) will not be full. The Kestrel can hold up to a maximum of 8 members of crew, and as of yet we have a total of 5 applications, and 1 additional pose of interest. The Sparrow itself has yet to be touched. =)

Thank you for asking.

Sector and Beacon jumping, and consequential events will in fact be randomized host-side on my part, and combat itself too will also have to be system-based - I am currently working on a little system for that - but otherwise, we are going to try and takes things freeform and allow a lot more liberty in actions in contrast to the base game. For example, original events and questlines.

With that said, folks: would you like me to run a character? Or would you prefer I act purely in a Game Master's perspective? Or would you perhaps prefer I have a character in my own right?

Application reviews are underway ^^

Name: Ulysses Archer
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Occupation: Kestrel, Gunner
Appearance:Tall, dark, and possibly handsome (depending on your definition, as he likes to add), Ulysses was born and brought up on the world of Pokitaru, essentially a resort world due to the sheer number of exquisite beaches and an orbit that ensured it was always hot out. He goes back as often as he can, both because he loves visiting his family, but also because he likes to keep up his tan. His dark hair has been kept short due to his military service, though he is currently taking advantage of the rebel crisis to let it grow a bit.
essentially Jason Momoa built in 9/10 scale

Personality: While he doesn't consider himself vain, not exactly, Ulysses is quite fond of the way he looks. Not to the point of being overbearing (a lesson he learned at the academy) but he has been noted for "peacock-like displays" on at least one report. Despite this, he maintains something of an air of a professional, and it helps that he is most certainly good at his job, nevermind that his laid back temperament and desire to "look good" tend to grate on the nerves of some.
Biography: Ulysses grew up literally fifteen feet from the water, his family home raised on stilts in the shallows of one of Pokitaru's many beaches, and he learned how to swim and walk during the same stage of his upbringing. Sailing was a favourite hobby of his, followed by the local version of what was once known as rugby, but Pokitarans called "the Game", a very rough water sport where the objective was simply to get the ball to the end zone, and the only rule was no drowning.

Ulysses entered the PDF shortly after he turned 20, but grew tired of the very simple (and often boring) assignments he was assigned to, and three years later he transferred to the Federation Navy, after a drunken night with a veteran who had told him all kinds of stories (some of which may have been true). He took a course on boarding and repelling boarders before he switched services, so while he can be put to work manning the laser and plasma turrets he is just as competent (if not more so, given his physique) functioning as a marine.

As far as he's concerned, the problems of the Rebels and the Federation don't mean all that much. Yes, he doesn't think aliens are second-class citizens or deserve to be wiped out, but that's more of an abstracted thought. When it comes to his own personal reasons for fighting, it's very simple; the Federation pays him to do a job, and the Rebels have tried to kill him.

Edit: This was supposed to be submitted a couple hours ago, but I clicked on MissFire's links and was sucked into the void.

Ok it looks like we have three gunmen now...

Honestly make or a character or not it's up to you, I listed my character as the captain because in most sci-fi shit the pilot is often the captain.

I have taken the Oath of the Drake: http://tinyurl.com/ptea68l

Jason

Host's Character: Hal
Name: Hal
Race: Engi
Sex: Male
Occupation: Kestrel Captain, Mechanic
Appearance: Hal is an Engi. Their bodies are made up of swarms of nanobots which give off an illusion of the Engi having silvery skin. While they can adopt many shapes to adapt to the needs of the current given environment, Hal tends to retain to a fairly humanoid one as most other species are quite comfortable with dealing with such a figure. It is believed that the nanobots collectively use an organic aerobic metabolism, as Engi are in fact organisms, regardless of their enigmatic status in the eye of science.

Hal's "face" is what could be described as a green screen display, and his robotic nature is an example as to his mastery over machinery. Much like his kin, Hal's repairing ability is supreme. He considers much of human technology primitive, and has an easy mastery of manipulating its likes. The delicate and very technical inner workings of an Engi are not nearly as rugged as regular organic material, like that found in humans. As a result, Hal is a poor fighter; however, his immaculate knowledge of mechanics coupled with their immunity to most diseases as a result of their cybernetic bodies can make them excellent allies.

Personality: Hal is quite snarky and cheeky by most Engi's standards. He has been known to make occasional condescending jides and quips to others, but those are mostly out of a sense of camaraderie - thought that is not to say he will keep his mind to himself should somebody act, by his standards, illogical. However, to likely be anticipated, Hal is never overtly hostile, and most of the time he will be straight to the point. He always maintains his voice at a monotonous and calm, reasonable level, and ensures rational thought be the prime directive he is to pursue. Hal can also be quite timid at times - threats of violence often will make the peaceful mechanic flinch by instinct.

Biography: Hal was quick to find himself a place in the Engi Brigade of the Federation. The conglomerate of species' function would only benefit those involved, and stay the hands of the more aggresive or violent races such as the Rockmen, the recently reawakened Lanius, or worst of all the Mantis. While Hal is utterly terrified of the warrior insectoids, he would not work against one should they be on the same side - and that is why the Federation was so important to Hal. Everyone was on the same side, everyone looked out for each other. The Engi relished the ability to learn the multitude of culture's technology and devices.

The human-supremacist Rebellion spoiled this all, and the war that ensued devastated the one glorious Federation. Hal would not allow the candle of hope to be extinguished on his watch, and so was deployed to captain and maintain the old, outdated but employed Kestrel Cruiser, and to participate in a quite possibly suicidal mission to deliver the vital information to the remainder of the Federation's Fleet.

It seems we have a lot of requests for the gunner position. I have elaborated on what the difference is between Artillery and Gunner in the OP, but to explain it here: Artillery crew specialize in controlling the ships' onboard weaponry, while Gunners are anti-personal and will focus on combat whether boarding and attacking enemy crew on their ships, or dealing with boarders themselves.

Golden Spider, remove your character's title for Captain. You may retain the place as pilot.

Now that my app is done, reviewing is underway. Please let me know if your app is complete or not.

Application complete! It's been edited into my earlier post, but I'll list it again for convenience.

Zev Wulfrun, Artillery

I've listed him as part of the Kestrel crew, but really, either ship's fine if things get crowded.

Updated my application.  Please consider this version the complete one.

Name:Electra Logan

Race: Human

Sex: Female

Occupation:  Kestrel - Gunnery / Engines

Appearance:  Electra is lean and athletic with a pale complexion that seems to accompany all spacers.  A tattoo with her former mercenary company sigil is visible on her upper arm and the scars from previous fights can also be seen on her bared flesh.

Personality:
Having spent time as part of a mercenary crew, Electra is not afraid of a fight, and most of the time is expecting one.  It was a bleak fact that violence so often accompanied the work and she learned to deal with it.  Sure a peaceful resolution is preferable but when the weapons come out the scenario becomes either you or your opponent, and then there is no hesitation.  She is not particularly bloodthirsty, dislikes cruelty or torture of any kind, and displays more of a ruthless calm, accepting of the violence around her as a fact of life.

She is not racist towards other species in the galaxy, having both served alongside and fought with non-human races.

Given that fortune can be fickle, Electra makes the most of any down time, either spent on ship or preferably in a safe port.  She drinks, gambles and indulges in more intimate activities realizing that the day may come when she is no longer able to, so she is going to make the most of the time now.

Electra is always armed with either a pistol or a blade of some sort and she is not afraid to use either.

Biography:
Electra Logan is a spacer.  She earned her keep originally as part of a merchant vessel, learning to keep ships running with a particular interest in engines.  One of the ships that she was on was attacked by slavers and she was taken as a hostage only to be liberated some time later by a mercenary crew who had been hired to fight slavers.  Electra eagerly joined the crew in order to gain some measure of revenge on slavers.  She found that she enjoyed the excitement of the mercenary life and started to expand her skill set, adding boarding actions to her skill set.

When the Rebellion broke out, loyalties within the mercenary company became strained as various members of the crew leaned towards the Federation while others supported the Rebellion.  Electra left the company when it became clear that the ship was going to side with the Rebellion and joined up with the Federation, taking advantage of an amnesty offered to increase recruits.

It just so happened that she was waiting for an assignment when a call was put out for volunteers for an important assignment.

Name: Samuel Kingston

Race: Human
Sex: Male
Occupation: Kestrel Pilot
Appearance: at 6'5 and 210 Sam is firmly normal for his height. He is somewhat muscular, but not ripped. He has a symbol tattooed on his left breast that derives from an old Terran culture to serve as a testament to his fallen family. He walks with a slight limp due to the injury that left him at the helm of the ship instead of boarding and killing some rebel scum like he would prefer.
Personality: Sam is a kindhearted but serious man, he has a strong dedication to the federation and a seething Hatred towards the rebellion that gives him strength to continue. Besides all this he is a smart tactical man and loves to be friends with everyone on the ship
Biography: Sam was once a family man, retired from life as a pilot in the federation to be with his wife and young children, that all changed when the rebellion started. His home planet of Lestarn was one of the first targets, being one of the planet's most heavily populated with non-human life. His wife and daughter died in the massacre, and fueled by rage Sam jump aboard the closest transport to take him to the fight. he fought and killed many rebels as a member of the boarding party until he sustained a wound to his tendon which left him as a pilot, he quickly adapted and rose in the ranks. after his last ship was destroyed in dock by the rebels he made his way to the federation and was stationed on the Kestrel as the pilot, for he was by now one of the best pilots remaining.
