From your darkest nightmares our vessels sweep
North, South, West and East,
We bring our prows from the twilight shores
That the great grey wolves may feast.

To the outmost roads of the plunging sea
Our dragon ships are hurled,
We have broken the chains of your mortal thanes
And now we break your world.

Out of the dark of the misty night
We come, shaped of your dread
To harry again you mortal men
The crow's feast off your dead.

The ravens circle above our heads
Our chant is of victory.
They hear our roars on a thousand shores
And they know the Wolf is free.

It has been generations since the dragon ships had last been seen, the Northland raiders having been defeated at the Battle of Crimson Foam, their strength shattered and the survivors send fleeing, never to trouble civilised lands again.

With no threat seen, vigils grow lax, guards grow lazy and people forget why walls were kept so high, and a strong watch kept on misty nights.

And now?

Now a strong leader has risen in the North, uniting the tribes once more under one war banner. Merchants have carried tales of the riches to be found on southern shores, and towns ripe for the taking.

The fog hangs heavy in the air, muffling the sweep of countless oars, and ahead, through the fog, are the dim, twinkling lights of a slumbering town.

So, nothing too complex here. A viking inspired group of sea raiders, a town ready to put to the torch, loot and slaves there for the taking.

Can be played with fantasy elements (non humans and magic) or not, the basic premise works either way :)

Anyone interested?

Edit - adding a few potential roles

Raid leader / Thane / Ship Captain
Raiders
Vitki (Sorcerer / Magician, runecaster)
Bearsarks / Ulfhednar - semi magical warriors

City Nobles
Citizens of note - Priests/Priestesses, Merchants, Craftmasters/Craftmistresses
City guard / Mercenaries
Regular city folk

I am likewise interested, however I'm not sure whether I'd rather play a Village Priestess or one of the Raiders! Normally I'd play one of the feisty raiders in this type of setting but I'm not sure that bodes well for a woman uninterested in playing out a sexually dominant role xD Then again, the 'traditional' S/M roles typically bore me....

Possibly interested in one of these roles:

Vitki (Sorcerer / Magician, runecaster)
Bearsarks / Ulfhednar - semi magical warriors

Mercenaries

It depends on some specifics regarding them.

What sort of specifics are you looking for? I'd favour more of a fantasy approach on them than pure historical, more opportunity for fun that way I think :)

King Serperior

Well, I guess I'll list out the specific questions about them.  I also favor a fantasy approach as well.   :-)

Vitki (Sorcerer / Magician, runecaster):  I think I lean moreso to the 'Sorcerer' aspect than the 'Magician' or 'Runecaster' ones.  However, I have some ideas for a character on each 'classification.'
Sorcerer:  It's rare that I get the chance to play a Necromancer.  However, a necromancer seems too limited.  When I see the word, 'Sorcerer,' I always imagine someone who dabbles in that realm's 'Dark and Forbidden Arts.'
Magician:  I am under the assumption that a Magician is a front lines fighter, using destructive magic to blast foes into powders.  I normally don't prefer such characters though.
Runecaster:  I am least familiar with this type and assume you mean it literally?  As in, a Runecaster uses runes to lay traps and fortify defenses, weaken opposing offenses, and/or create 'healing circles.'  I could play this type if need be.

Bearsarks / Ulfhednar - semi magical warriors:  I imagine these to be the standard 'Spellswords,' using a combination of magic and swordsmanship.  However, I don't know just how powerful in magic that these warriors may be.  I assume the most of their magic comes from weapons and/or armor that has been enchanted by wizards, witches, priests, and other magical beings?

Mercenaries:  Are these 'mercs' going to be solely soldiers and warriors?  Or will there be 'mercs' that are classes as 'Battlemages,' 'Wizards,' 'Spellswords,' and similar types of warriors?

I suppose I'll play a Priestess :) Any ideas on specific practices you want to see done? As well as the expected religious practice? Or will we be given free reign for that? I'm guessing something polytheistic. Or maybe a Shaman... I like the idea better.. Town Shamaness o:

I am tentatively interested. Maybe as a bearsark or ulfhednr. If things go the fantasy route and they get to be berserkers who can withstand iron weapons without harm or shape-changers who can take on the form of bears or wolves, that would interest me most.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

Sorry for the delay in responding. 6 am starts means I have to get to bed fairly early :)

Vitki - technically they would be a magic user who specialised in the runes. I figured adding sorcerer and magician would make it clearer what they did. If we're going with a somewhat more magical approach, I'd probably swipe the Vesten runes from 7th Sea

https://confusticate.com/~tisfan/7thSea/Runes.html

That should give an idea the sort of stuff you could do with them, as well as using them for runic divination and so on.

Mainlander magic users might use other forms of magic. Priests would call on their faith in their God(s) / Goddess(es), Shamans might work with spirits, Mages would draw on another source ... there's lots of options, and little yet set in stone.

The Bearsarks would call on the spirit of the Bear when they go into battle. They become stronger, tougher, perhaps they evoke a sense of fear in those they face. Perhaps in the absolute height of frenzy some might even turn into a giant bear (shades of The Hobbit, anyone?)

Ulfhednar call on Wolf. They're scouts, rather than front line fighters. Maybe they see better in the dark, have heightened senses of hearing and scent. Maybe they work instinctively as pack fighters. Maybe the Alpha can shift into wolf or wolfman form?

Again, lots of possibilities depending what people want to do.

The story belongs to all of us, so we each get to share in shaping it :) If you have ideas, throw them out here :)

Mercenaries .. again, the possibilities are open right now. I don't see why a mercenary couldn't fight with magic as well as steel. A healer would always find a good spot in a mercenary company too. They might be hired by the town, or by a caravan, or be here looking for work. Heck, they might even offer to sign on with the raiders, if it's a choice between loot and death. :)

With mercenaries coming from anywhere, you can go with something exotic. Same for the retinue of an ambassador or merchant.

If I might suggest, while the town is up in the air in regards to the type of people living there, it would be a good idea if the majority of people are from the town.  So there are 15 different cultures in one town, and almost everybody is not from the town.  Although I am not sure it will be a problem.  Just saying.

Just how big a town are we talking about.  Guessing fairly small, but looking for an idea.  1,000?  10,000?  50,000?  1,000,000?  Is it walled?  Or did the town outgrow its walls?

Would slavery be legal in the town?

"No, chainsaws."  (just kidding)

HairyHeretic

Agreed. The majority of the town would be from a single culture, but traders (either by land or sea) could represent a few others.

I'd imagine the town something like this

The area around 3 would be the noble quarter, 9 would be the Temple district.

6 is the slums, poorly built, small buildings.

The town would have a population of maybe 3,500 - 4500, with anywhere up another 1000 slaves who work the fields around the town alongside the freeman farmers, and a perhaps a few hundred transients .. merchants mainly.

How does that sound?

Would also think that a good number of the mercenaries would be from people not native to the town.  Probably most from the same culture, but msybe not the same town.

Map looks good.  Just curious, where do you find all these cool maps?

Am interested, probably as a noble, living on an estate outside of town?

Thanks for the clarification!

Judging from this, I am thinking I'll play as a Sellsword.  He'll be born of magical blood, but be highly skilled with the blade.  His blade, pale blue and almost translucent, as if it were made of ice, was forged using both spell and hammer, thus creating an edge that is extremely sharp, sharper than a razor, and bites with the deepest cold, numbing the foes body with even the smallest of cuts.  Wielding Frostbite, this 'outsider' was hired by a local merchant from a northern region and is well-known for his skills.  His magical talents don't end at his blade though.  By entering into a semi-trance state, he can enter the mind of a wild beast and coordinate his efforts with that of the beast to aid his combat.

Or something along those lines.

I think trancing out in combat is a good way to get yourself killed :)

It sounds like what you have in mind in something like the wargs in Game of Thrones, able to take control of an animal, which wouldn't be a bad idea. Having a trained animal companion that would help in combat is also doable, but I'm not sure that merging the two ideas would work so well.

Haha, true!  :P

That said, the Wargs are where I got the idea (even though I am only about halfway through season 3 and barely 200 pages into the first book).  The way I see him is that he has a trained 'blood-hawk' (A really hardy bird that is an omen of death where he hails from.  It's effectively a larger and more dangerous Raven and just as smart) as his animal companion.  Depending on how other characters get set up, I may have him hired to either side, following the riches.

Well, there's no reason you couldn't modify the idea a bit. Have it trained to assist in combat, or have him able to warg it out of combat. Would that work for you?

Also, what sort of story do you envision with him? Which side does he start and finish on? Would be betray whoever had hired him if he started off opposing the raiders?

How common would enchanted weapons be? And does this world have metals with special properties, like mithril?

That's what I was thinking.  In combat, it would provide aerial support.  To those who haven't been to the northern lands where he hails from, it would just look like a regular carrion bird awaiting bloodshed, not something that can swoop in and take out someone's unprotected eyes.  Outside of battle, his use with the bird would be very valued.
Quote
Also, what sort of story do you envision with him? Which side does he start and finish on? Would be betray whoever had hired him if he started off opposing the raiders?
Well, the story I see him doing is searching for the 'Legendary Nine,' a set of nine swords forged long ago, each having magical properties.  His sword, Frostbite, is one such blade, though he will never say where he found it or how he obtained it.  He knows it's unlikely that he will ever find all nine in his lifetime, but he dares hope.  Meanwhile, he travels with whomever pays him best.

As for where he starts and finishes, that depends on what other characters fall into.  It wouldn't be unlikely that he has decided to travel with the Sea Wolves.  However, if he didn't start on the side of the raiders, he would betray whoever he started with if they paid him more than whomever he was receiving his pay from.  Of course, he's not so greedy that he's blinded by it.  He's smart enough to know who is on the winning side and will join them without hesitation, so long as there is profit to be made.  Otherwise, he'd quietly slip away and be far away by the time the bodies are counted.

I think magic should be somewhat uncommon. A person of note such as a noble or hero type might have a magic weapon, or one thought to be magic. Think of it as common enough that everyone would know stories, but rare enough that many people wouldn't have any experience with it, though it would be more common in larger population centres where you would have major temples and such like.

I don't see why there couldn't be metal with special properties. What sort of thing are you thinking about?

Name: Priestess Inanna of the Amonian Temple
Age: Appears 24-29
Species:  Human
Gender: Female
Sexuality:  Heterosexual

Appearance: Inanna is a bodacious babe easily recognized for her exotic beauty. With dark hair and painted mocha flesh befitting an ancient Sumerian goddess, our little shaman stands only at a height of five feet and three inches. Green hazel eyes mark her in Gaia’s creation.
More Images

Gear: Clay or stone pots, bowls, jars, pestles and utensils; macramé or woven baskets and clothing. A fishing spear and bolline, decorative beaded and shell strung jewelry, small leather purses full of various herbs and poultices.

Special talents:  Inanna is a first class Shaman and Amonian Priestess that pays homage to no tribe or people and caters too all in exchange for various trade. She is an exceptional healer(Both spiritual and physical) and herbalist. Although healing is not an instant thing she can speed up an injury that would take a month to recover to only a couple of days at the cost of extreme fatigue, bedrest and sometimes temporary coma in the injured person. She is also quite an accomplished apothecary, weaver and macramé enthusiast.

History: Time forgotten or not, wars happen and it was a war of tribes that saw to the end of her own. The Na’ku’tAa were long ago extinct, cut down at the knees when she was just old enough to remember their horrors. Her mentor, the great shamaness of the tribe at the time, was quick to whisk her away from all the bloodshed and retreat to the dangerous but welcoming arms of the forest. It was there that Inanna spent a few short years of her life in relative peace hiding away from the rest of the world while she continued her studies as an apprentice.

Alas, nothing is meant to last. Her mentor, Moga, was only human and had long ago grown accustomed to a life of reverence and comfort. She succumbed to her own sins of greed and to acquire a more accommodating life Inanna was sold into priesthood for her unusual magical talents. She could have found worse, right? And while the life of a priestess was not the most liberating one her tragedies could have left her much worse off – or at least that’s what she told herself.

Today she can be seen collecting vegetation or shells on the beach, usually humming or quietly singing amongst herself. She is rumored to help those abandoned, lost and in need but otherwise has never been known to actually speak.

Sexual ons: Same as player
Sexual offs: Same as player

Foot Note: Amonian religion is a polytheistic and animistic religion with pantheistic undertones much like the Druidic teachings but primarily focuses on the ocean as the cradle of all life. This is because the somewhat salty taste of the ocean is heavily associated with the female womb. It is very ritualistic in practice and usually involves ocean water, ocean vegetation, fish and salt. The temple can hold multiple Priests and Priestesses.

Little from column A, little from column B

I have an idea or two that I can use once the initial raid would finish up, but if the players want to drive the story, or work in personal storylines, I'm all in favour of this :)

It's a big world out there, and a bad storm can drive a single ship all kinds of interesting places :)

Indeed.  He is probably farther north than from where the raiders come from as he comes from an icy, landlocked land.  That said, he more than likely knows of the raiders and perhaps they know of the man who wields an icy blade.

Alright, so here’s my idea for my character and the metal.

There’s a large, mountainous isle, off the coast of the northlands. Its soil makes for poor farming but beneath the rocky peaks, rich deposits of iron and Gullhstál or in other languages, Golden Iron or Fire Gold. A rare metal, only found on the island, it is the color of pure gold and can be mistaken for that precious ore, at least until one tries to refine it, for it metals at a higher temperature than iron, never mind that of gold and will remain cool to the touch, until it is almost ready to metal. As such, it's a hard metal to work with, save for the methods of the island’s smiths, who have almost become a cult, with their secretive ways. However, once it has been forged into weapons and armor, the beautiful golden hues take on a reddish undertone, as if the fire is trapped within the Gullhstál and makes a metal stronger than steel, to which magic is easily bound.

The Thane of the islands rules a small clan, as not much food is grown there and living off the bounty of the sea, can be tricky. Although fewer in number, than other clans of the northman, few have tried to invade them and all have failed. The rocky nature of the islands means numbers are useless, the defenders can always find a way to force the attackers to face them on an equal front and their strongholds are half craved from the island. Not to mention, nearly every seax, sword and axe of the islanders are of Gullhstál and their spears, arrows and mail are of fine steel. The Thane himself is clad in coat of Gullhstál mail and his helmet is the same, as are the helmets of his household warriors.

The Thane has been able to resist the new leader among the Northmen and has pledged himself as an ally, not a vassal to this great man. As such, he has brought along a small but well equipped contingent, for the raiding of the southern lands.

What do you think?

Does this have room for a seer from a tropical island?  Agendered, potentially bisexual, and whose powers/status of magical person are linked to their staying androgynous.
Potentially a slave already, kidnapped or sold to a noble in Albrook, willing to turn on the people who enslaved them.

Is there anyone that is going to defend our fair city, not sell it out or betray it?  :)

Slave seer?  Interesting.
"Are you into whips and chains too?"
"No, chainsaws."  (just kidding)

Haha. Yeah, I was thinking of playing a high priestess or something. Now I think I'm just going to play a kick ass warrior chick. For the city!! Lol. Idk. Kind of lonely on this side. :/

So would his blade be enchanted, or just capable of being enchanted, and for the moment it is, in effect, a very high quality steel?

I don't see why not, though we already have one Priestess type. Are you happy doubling up, or would you prefer something more unique?

Mercenary? Military? Civilian militia? Someone from a Knightly order (or something along those lines) perhaps?

It would be capable of being enchanted, at the start of the story

In regards to enchanted blades, as part of my character's story (most of which is his secret), he will start with one of 9 legendary blades, Frostbite.  As said earlier, it was forged with spell and hammer over 3,000 years ago.  No one knows who exactly forged the blades and they were scattered over the world over time.  In regards to Frostbite's enchantments:  It requires no whetstone as it will keep it's edge as sharp as the day it was forged;  It's sharper than nearly all man-made blades as well as stronger;  It's made from an unknown metal that is an icy blue and appears almost translucent;  The blade itself repels blood quickly;  If anyone but the one who it considers the 'owner' touches it, it will become extremely cold to the point of pain;  Cuts from this blade chills to the bone and numbs the body where it cut;  If the blade's cut is not properly taken care of, frostbite will quickly set it.

A powerful and dangerous weapon, yes, but not unbeatable.  My character will still be a man if someone manages to disarm him.

Would your character be a leader of some sort? If he was the leader of the raiders maybe that's the whole shtick behind it. It's a legendary blade that chooses its own wielder and after one tribe leader dies there are a series of tests where people try to touch the blade without said pain in the end :D Could be a cool way to keep it from being something inherited through family lines and maybe even start up rumors outside of the tribe about their leader being immortal because of holding said legendary sword for such and such generations without them really realizing the switch up xD

You know, because of the whole 'every one they come across dies!" "but how do we have the stories?!" kind of thing =P

Name:  Arren Ironskin
Age:  35 (appears to be closer to 30)
Species:  Human
Gender:  Male
Employment:  Sellsword/Adventurer
Sexuality:  Not very picky (Read as Pansexual);  Has a slight preference to females

Appearance:  Arren is a slight, but firm man with long, dark hair that reaches down past his shoulders.  His body is lean and hard, which comes from being a sellsword and his adventures across the land and seas.  It is rare to see him not wearing his emerald ring, the only thing he has to remind him of where he came from.  He stands at a little under six feet tall.  His eyes are a bright green and are full of wit and humor.

Other Images:  1, 2

Gear:  Frostbite, an Axe, a worn travel cloak, a wineskin, a couple of daggers, an emerald ring, well-worn light armor, and various nicknacks that he has come to collect out of curiosity.
Frostbite:  One of the Nine Blades of Legend, it forged with spell and hammer over 3,000 years ago.
Axe:  Not only is it a useful tool, but it is also his backup weapon should he be unable to reach Frostbite in time.  He has the strength and skill to split a man's skull in two with ease.
2x Daggers:  Mainly used for skinning animals or spearing meat, they are also extremely useful as concealed weapons.

Special Talents:  Arren is one of a rare number of individuals who are said to be one with the spirits.  As such, he can enter into a trance-like state and enter the mind of his animal companion, Windreaper, a Blood Hawk from his lands.  This allows him to be a useful spy and scout.
Windreaper:  Windreaper is Arren's animal companion.  A Blood Hawk, they are long-living, incredibly intelligent, raven-like birds that can fly as silently as any owl.  In the lands where he comes from, Blood Hawks are the omen of death and decay, a very bad sign for anyone.  Colored a deep, dark red, almost black, one can easily mistake one for a carrion bird....until they look into it's eyes and see the malicious intelligence in its eyes.

History:  Hailing from a frozen, landlocked piece of land, Arren's life was tough.  However, that never stopped him from seeking adventure, especially after hearing one of the elders of the small town he lived in tell stories that most consider myths and legends.  By the time he came of age of 16, with just an axe in hand, he left his home far behind.  For the next nine years, he traveled farther than he would have ever hoped, nearly dying sometimes.  It was all great fun to him though as it beat wasting your life away.

On the age of 25, he was wandering in a frozen part of his homeland, nearly frozen over.  Just when he believed it was the end, he noticed a bird that seemed to give him the strength to carry on into a small cave with a pool of heated water:  A hidden spring.  As he collapsed on the hot rocks, his mind took him into the mind of the bird that saved him.  He saw many things, some that seemed too extraordinary to be real.  One of those visions was of a beautiful sword, it's blade the color of ice.  Three days later, he awoke to find the bird staring at him, a Blood Hawk.  From that moment on, he knew he found his destiny and a relationship like no other was forged.

The following 10 years was spent traveling where, at some point, he came across the blade in his vision.  How and where he found it, he will never say.  During that time, he began to make himself known as a sellsword who's skill was worth every piece of gold his price demanded.  More often than not, he is seen enjoying life, be it women, wine, or gambling.  He still travels in search of the other 8 Blades of Legend and, in his heart, feels he is close to discovering the resting place of one of them.....

Sexual Ons:  Same as player (PM first)
Sexual Offs:  Same as player (PM first)

Other Notes:  I would prefer that the other Eight Blades of Legend not be under the ownership of PCs.  This is part of my character's story, his search for them.  Thank you!

Oh! I thought you were replying to him as well xD

Well, it's his sword. I was just suggesting some interesting background. He doesn't seem very interested in my idea, that aside xD

Although on top of the whole 'the sword chooses it's wielder', perhaps the reason why it doesn't get passed down family lines is because the blade steals the wielder's ability to procreate. So if he didn't have children before taking the blade he most certainly wouldn't be able to after xD

At this point I'm just throwing stuff out there for the fun of it.

Haha!  Good idea, but not for my character's story!

The blades are semi-sentient and choose it's wielder based on certain qualities, most of which are unknown.  Arren has no clue why he can wield Frostbite when no one else can, but what's a sellsword to complain?   XD

Hmmm, I wonder how Arren and the Priestess Inanna will get along?  :)

Instead of a priest-like character I was thinking of an adviser, maybe even someone like Varys from Game of Thrones.
Maybe slightly skilled with a dagger, but nothing too impressive.  This person would not be a healer, but a collector of secrets and and maybe even magical knowledge.

That sounds like a potential story thread right there. Perhaps they were in the town looking to hire a ship to take them North in search of some mystical artifact, and they manage to convince the raiders not to kill them out of hand with promise of great treasure to be found.

I can see a couple of possibilities from the map I found previously.

One option is standard city guard, very much a civil peacekeeping force.

The second option makes use of the castle in the North of the map, which could be home to a (small) force of some knightly type order.

Do you have a preference?

I figure if I miss the start of the play, I could just have her returning from some quest or trip she was on. Jumping right into whatever task she had to help with. ;) She will be somewhere high in the military forces, but won't have any magic and such. No everyone can have magic. Haha.

I was thinking your pretty much bog standard city guard, probably in charge of the night shift. So she isn't exactly your crackfighter but still rather good with a stout club to handle the drunks.

Besides who doesn't like a woman in uniform.. or .. well as much uniform as the city guard have ^^ so that begs the question what kind of fashion they do have. Is it more like the Renaissance style or earlier.. or..

Generic fantasy ;)

Actually, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings probably wouldn't be too bad for drawing clothing imagery from :)

A city militia would probably have something like leather armour, maybe some chainmail. They wouldn't be expecting all out battle, but more dealing with drunken fights and thieves.

Yeees!  I like this idea :)

Will be working on rounding out a character soon!

Deamonbane

Name:  Brev the Wolf
Age:  42
Species:  Ulfhednar
Gender:  Male
Employment:  Scout/Bowman
Sexuality:  Heterosexual

Appearance:  Tall, lean, hard and build to last, Brev is the essence of survival. Long arms and legs, a gaunt, hungry look about him, almost humming with the need to spring into action. Long grizzled hair, reaching a few inches below his shoulders, and a beard of matching color, right eye green and the left eye the color of the winter sky. Corded muscles cover his body, already beginning to look pulled over his wiry frame. Scars are as frequent as unmarred skin.

Gear:  A horn Recurve bow, string made of horsehair and with a draw of 65 pounds, one that he made himself from elk antlers. A hide quiver with 22 smooth-tip arrows. Tools to repair his bow as well as make more arrows. Long skinning knife and hatchet, to be used either as tools or weapons. Flint, whetstone, long wickedly curved hunting knife.

Special Talents: One of the Ulfhednar, melded with a wolf. His eyesight, hearing, sense of smell and other senses are greatly enhanced, allowing him to see great distances, even in the dark, hear anything within a hundred yards of him and allow him to track men and beasts over great distances. His stamina is also greatly increased, as well as his athleticism and speed, at the expense of physical strength. Able to move silently and at great speeds for a long time. Thanks to his exceptional senses, he is also one of the finest archers in the world. In response, his skills in melee fighting are underdeveloped and weak, which is why he chooses to remain away from close fighting, and only engages when pressed.

History:  His memories of before the melding are disjointed and confused, coming to him in dreams or provided by people that he knew or knew him before. He knows that he was of a tribe that was destroyed by the winter. He knows that he joined a raiding party and that the raiding party was attacked and all were killed or captured. During the attack, he was told, his back was injured in such a way that meant that he would never walk again. Turning himself over to the practices of a local witch, he was melded.

Memories of the wolf come to him as well. Running with a pack, tasting the warm, flesh and blood of a kill. All memories, even harder for one that takes the form of a man to decipher. He does remember his skill with the bow, increased since the melding. His taste for swords and spears has waned, however.

Despite this, he proves himself a valuable asset, on ship or on land. His eyes see far and easily read the stars and sun. On land he is the scout, the first boots on dry land to find drinkable water, food and potential targets for raiding and potential threats. His accuracy with his powerful bow has sapped the spirit of many a force, defending or attacking, making him an asset in battle as well as in peace.

Sara Nilsson

#71
Name: Captain Jenit Sulla
Occupation: Night Captain of the City Guard
Age: 35
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Straight

Appearance and demeanor: She isn’t a beauty in the traditional sense, her nose has been broken too many times, she has a bit too much muscle for most men and with a lack of curves few men turn their head to give her a second glance. But she still has a certain presence that comes with confidence and knowing she has managed to get to where she is in life on her own merits. She keeps her shoulder long brown hair tied up in a bun or safely tucked into the simple helmet she dons when she expects a more serious fight. While she will follow the laws she has been known to perhaps bend it a little bit when it is clear that there really isn't a crime, like if some poor child stole some half rotten fruit from a market stall. The fruit wouldn't sell anyway but some merchants are too focused on wanting to punish anyone rather then see the reality, no one would buy the fruit and the poor kid is starving. In those cases she would make a show in front of the merchant about she will deal with it and then make sure the punishment is the lightest she can think of, in fact some would consider it nice to be locked up for the night so they can get a safe place to sleep and a bit of food.

Gear: Standard city guard armour, padded gambeson with metal plates covering the vital organs. A well worn but fully functional sword as well as a heavy wooden truncheon to knock out drunks with.

History: Her father was a guardsman or so her mother claims, Jenit never met him either he didn’t want anything to do with his daughter or he was sure he wasn’t the father. Regardless little Jenit would grow up on tales of the heroic and no doubt made up stories of her father as told by her mother. With her mother being one of the cities many poor who made a living by selling her body Jenit would quickly learn that people have an ugly side to them, the times her mother would come up all beaten up further reinforced a strong moral code into the young girl. And being the child of a simple whore made the other kids pick on her but Jenit very quickly earned a reputation for being a bit of a scrapper and not standing down from a good fight.

And as she entered her teenage years she would extend her protection to other poor kids as well, then when her mother passed away when Jenit was only 16 she marched up to the city guards barracks wanting to join. At first the Captain was hesitant to accept some street urchin but the old man had a bit of a soft spot in his heart for the poor so he accepted and it didn’t take long for the young woman to prove that his trust wasn’t misplaced. Jenit would always volunteer for the areas of the city that most considered a punishment to patrol, and there she would not just blindly beat up on the poor trying to make a living like some guardsmen but actually try and help them.

Five years ago she earned the coveted rank of captain as the old Night Captain retired having had enough of his old aching bones constantly giving him trouble when he job called for them to break up another drunken brawl down in the docks. While most consider the night watch to be second rate Jenit is really proud of her boys and girls and has been doing all she can to weed out the ones that just want to cause trouble and instil the men and women under her command with a sense of pride in their job.

Name: Magnhild 'Mag' Ylvania
Age: 25
Species:  Human
Gender:  Female
Employment:  High Ranking Officer
Sexuality: Strait... usually. ;)

Appearance:  Mag is unusually small for what she does, not standing more than an inch over five foot and lithe frame to match does make her a wicked warrior to fight against in battle. Her arms, legs and stomach are covered in smooth, lean muscles that aid her in everything from general life to warring on the weekends to the bedroom. Her eyes are a stunning blue that most people miss because she usually lurks in the shadows as if hunting for prey. Her hair is long, resting just below her shoulder blades, and the blonde locks are usually kept braided out of her face. Overall she isn't one to 'appear' clean, as she always has mud and dirt on herself or her clothes. There is also a myriad of battle and life scars that adorn her body.

Other Images: 1, 2, 3.

Gear: Sword, Twin Daggers that are crisscrossed between her shoulder blades, Family Dagger which is kept in one of her boots at all times, and last but not least is a small push that she keep hidden away somewhere on her at all times.

Special Talents: Mag doesn't have any 'special' talents as far as magic goes or any kind of phenomenal power to use to her aid. Instead, she is very extraordinarily skilled with weapons and her body. There isn't a foe that intimidates her, because she's had training and she was trained not to back down from a fight, but also because she is skilled. Even if it is clear that her opponent out-muscles her in size and such, her quick speed and short daggers will/could make fine work against them. Mag is very quick, which helps her in everything she does. Growing up as she did, she had become a good tracker, but her family didn't focus on that and she is slowly loosing touch with that primal side of her.

History: Mag didn't grow up in the city when she was little, but more of transported here when she was older. She was born to two people who lived on their own in the wild and were general nomads who lived off the land and never stayed in one place for very long. When they gave birth to Mag, they didn't want to be tied down. So, for the first seven years of her life she grew up with her parents who taught her how to track in the wild and become close to the animals. During her time with her parents, they followed a pack of wolves as if they were just straggling pups. On multiple occasions her mother, who was rumored to have powers over animals, was caught sitting and petting the wolves. This amazed Mag, but she could never get too close the pack of wolves. When she was seven years old, she found her mother with them again, this time in a cave and Mag decided to go and play with the wolves, too. It was a morbid encounter, resulting in the death of her father (this is an event that only comes to her in dreams, and she doesn't talk about it). Mag's mother couldn't even look at her child and gave her to a family friend, and Mag watched her mother disappear into the night.

Her new family were traveling swords makers and metal forgers, each with a background of fighting. Again, Mag was living in the wild basically, moving from area to area. This new family was adamant on teaching Mag how to survive on her own. Almost as soon as Mag was brought into the family, they were training her how to fight and move on her feet quickly and quietly. The training was relentless, sometimes forcing her to find food for herself for weeks to train her how to kill and survive. Eight years later, of almost non stop training, Mag was fifteen and it was time that she was on her own. Mag had grown tired of the family she never attached to emotionally, it was a hard thing for her new parents to understand so they refused to let her go. Sadly, they had trained their new found daughter too well. A couple days later, in the darkness of the night, just like her mother, she disappeared and never returned. Magnhild has no idea what has happened to her birth mother or her replacement parents, and that is what she will call them if one can ever get her to talk about her past, which is highly unlikely.

Now, fifteen and on her own Mag was quick to realize things were harder than she expected, especially with no way to make her own money. Thankfully, if she had learned anything from the last eight years it was how to remain quiet and unseen, and it had proven to come in handy on multiple occasions. The only things she had were the clothes on her back and the dagger she kept from her father. Two years later, at the edge of sixteen she had found herself in trouble when she was in a bigger city. She had been trying to get money for herself to obtain anything from weapons to clothes, and she went about this the only way she knew how. Pick pocketing and street tricks with her dagger and speed. When the crowd was getting tired of her street shows, she decided wrap up and move on, picking one more pocket wouldn't hurt. Until the guard in the square saw her actions and abruptly called a couple men to help capture her for her misdeeds. This lead to a long week, where the men tried to track her down. When they did, the two men left weren't prepared for her skill and speed when it came to hand to hand combat.

Leaving them bleeding, alive, but bleeding and a couple of new scars herself, she moved on. Mag traveled around for another year, until she was eighteen. Deciding it might be easier if she settled down, going against the norm of all of her caretakers growing up, she traveled a long distance before finding her current city. She was eighteen and performing in the streets wasn't really cutting it as far as she was concerned. Nobody knew where she came from, and when people asked she just told the she grew up there. But, one day a military officer noticed her skills and asked if she wanted a real job and training. It was very clear she had immense training, but they needed more skill in their ranks. Mag quickly agreed and joined as a recruit. Soon, she was flying through the ranks and in six years, at the age of twenty-four she was offered a high ranking position. Quickly taking the position with pride, she officially has found a place where she feels she belongs.

Struggling with her past childhood, she recently left to take time for herself to do some 'looking into' about the whereabouts of her birth mother, figuring she'd start by finding the wolf pack her mother was basically a part of. She's been gone a month, and is now returning to find her city in trouble...

Sexual Ons:  Same as player (PM first)
Sexual Offs:  Same as player (PM first)

Other Notes: She might have grown up with wolves, but instead of being fond of them and closer to them she almost hates the creatures and considers killing all of them. The only thing holding her back from killing them, is her long lost mother. She went through the excruciating experience of carving this into the back of her neck to remind her of her mother and the wolves.

Wait, should we put these in the Character thread or here??

Brev looks good, though I'd be inclined to tune his physical abilities down a little. From what I understand a wolfs eyesight is about on par with a humans in the day, but they have superior night vision. Maybe he can see as well in moonlight as most can in daylight, that sort of thing?

Hey, does the city have a name?? My apologies if I missed this anywhere... :P

It does now. Winterhaven.

Captain Sulla looks good. Does she look up to anyone named Cain by any chance? ;)

Magnhild looks good as well. What sort of military force does she belong to though? A mercenary company? Standing army? Chivalrous order?

Feel free to post them all into the character thread, and we can tweak anything needed there.

I actually wasn't sure. Maybe just a standing army? What'd you think?

And I will be posting it to the character page. But, is there any personalizing that we can do with the coloring and such??

Any of the ideas I suggested would be workable. Do you have any preference?

So, the following characters have fully joined the story

Raiders:
Brev the Wolf - Ulfhednar scout
Ragnar Stormtossed - Huskarl / Skeppare (Ship Captain)
Thorgrim Thoralfrson - Thane of the Crag Isle

City folk:
Arren Ironskin - Mercenary
Inanna of the Amonian Temple - Priestess
Jenit Sulla - Captain, City Guard
Magnhild 'Mag' Ylvania - Military officer

but there's still plenty of room yet.

The night is dark and the fog is rolling in from the sea, blanketing Winterhaven's streets and muffling sight and sound alike. Who will be abroad on a night that will be unlike any seen in years?

The raiders are spilling through the city, seeking blood and plunder. Paths are being crossed and destinies forged, but we still have plenty of opportunities for new folks to join.

The story is still in fairly early stages, and new players are more than welcome,

The raid is over, the longships carrying plunder and slaves sweeping off into the dawn. A storm has come up and scattered the fleet, several ships finding themselves driven up on a strange shore. Might there be other survivors from some of the other ships lying on the beach nearby?

If anyone is interested in joining us, raider or former town folk, now's a good opportunity to slip easily into the story.

I was just playing Viking Conquest earlier tonight, and I love Vikings (the show), so I would definitely love to get in on this!

Depending on whether there is a need for more raiders or slaves at the moment, I would love to play either a young raider who's getting his feet (and axe) wet for the first time, or a slave determined to make the best of a bad situation.
If you're such an iconoclast, where were you when we trashed Constantinople?

HairyHeretic

Either would work. Do you have a strong preference towards one over the other? We could probably use slaves more than raiders.

This looks very interesting. When you say you are about to start the next chapter, are your raiders about to go out and raid again, or are you starting another event within the raiders home territory?

Tackyhillbilly

I might be interested. Would a Vitki have a place? Being a Wiseman of the Sea appeals (especially if he get some of the plunder.)

I'll go with a slave, then. Someone clever and pretty but with limited prospects in her old home, who might be able to take advantage of this sudden change of position and come out on top, if she's very lucky.

Not quite.

Currently they're here

having been driven and scattered by a bad storm. Most of the ships are going to head off, leaving one behind, which has repairs to complete.

Before it leaves, scouts find this

and that's where the next part of the story will take place.

Yep, that should work. We might need to discuss specific abilities mind you.
