So...I am a huge fan of Koei's game series "Dynasty Warrior's"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynasty_Warriors

It is based off the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" novels.

Anyone else a fan of the history? The games? Or if they want to play a free MMO, I am going to be trying it out.

Join Wei, best kingdom.
Shu sucks!

All hail Cao Cao!

Blinks

Eh? A dynasty warriors MMO. How does that work?

Well, i suppose you could start as a soldier. Upgrade your equipment and such over time from engaging in battles carefully. Then, at some point, perhaps months into it. You can get murdered by an almost untouchable being of destruction as they slaughter their way past you.
Battle cattle are indeed a formidable foe

Seka

Heheh, actually you're the untouchable being doing the slaughtering. basically you're one of the generals, surrounded by peons ripe for the killing.

I wanted to get into the MMO but the tutorial is soooo long and boring. And it's trying to teach me how to play Dynasty Warriors. I could teach it a thing or two about playing that game!

I love the series. Always side with Wei or Wu. Agreed, Shu sucks!

I've actually done a couple Dynasty Warriors/3 Kingdoms based roleplays but they were sadly short lived.

I tried to play the mmo beta, I really did but it was so god awful boring I just quit.

Shu sucks, go take your virtue and honor elsewhere, I'll stick to the side who kicked ass.

Aiden

He was pretty impressive, I love his ploys in the book.

"Man, I bet they can't shoot 100,000 arrows at me...suckers!"

DarklingAlice

I adore the history and the novel (although as far as Luo Guanzhong's works go, I prefer Water Margin). I am also quite a fan of KOEI's Romance of the Three Kingdoms games (7 and 10 were the best, in my opinion). But I am constantly disappointed with the Dynasty Warriors series. It is just way too simplistic compared to the grand maneuvers you can get up to in the strategy games (e.g. Just earlier this evening I was playing Zhuge Liang in R3K 10 and managed to hold off a 60,000 man Wei force with just 7,000 elite troops by starting a massive forest fire in the woods the enemy was marching through and properly judging the spread of the fire based on wind direction). Dynasty Warriors is fun, but it just gets so repetitive (in my opinion) and never seems to generate the same level of epicness as the original video game series or the novel.
For every complex problem there is a solution that is simple, elegant, and wrong.

I watched Red Cliff on a plane when I went for a trip. It was pretty neat. :D

OMG! Great idea! Dynasty Warriors RP. lol

Seconded! Takeshi Kaneshiro is so cute and made an amazing Zhuge Liang. And Tony Leung Chiu Wai is always awesome. I need to see if I can get my hands on the complete 4+ hour cut.

Caeli

Augh... you watched the international cut? x__x

That was a disastrous mishmash, and was (in my opinion) very badly done. The "shorted" version was a bad representation of what you get from the "long" cut. If I hadn't watched the two-film version about a dozen times before that, I think I would have been severely confused.

But Takeshi Kaneshiro! I love his acting, as always. You should see him in K-20 - he's hilarious!

Red Cliff was alright, I was not a big fan of it, since it was all Shu propaganda.

But I hope more movies come out on the setting.

I like the hack and slash of the Dynasty Warriors game, I do not play the PC version all that much.

And I would SO play in a Romance of the Three Kingdoms game/Rp.

Caeli

I'm not a big fan of the hack-and-slash. I like the cutscenes, though, and while it is oversimplified, I enjoy how much setting and story and history they incorporate into the game.

I've always thought it would be fun to do a Three Kingdoms roleplay, but I love the setting/culture/history so much, I'm not sure I wouldn't be able to NOT drive my partner crazy.

Shu is awesome, dammit Aiden!

Well, naturally... I think what we'd have to do if we did do a Romance of the Three Kingdoms RP is just have characters on one side fighting on two fronts... and probably the 'prelude' stuff.

Wouldn't be anything like Shu, Wei, and Wu, but something... similar, just so that we don't have people like Aiden getting furious if our army is dressed in green. :)

Aiden

I know I would have some inaccuracies in the culture/behavior of the time myself.

Haha I would kill anyone who is in Shu! Kidding, they are just not my side of choice, I would so be in Wu, a Pirate on the southern rivers like Gan Ning of the bells!

SHAMOKE!!!!!!
(The barbarian bastard that killed Gan Ning, for those who don't find the name familiar)

Man, now I feel like re-reading the novels... >.<

Slumming it with the peasantry, the Shu way;-p

I'm waiting as close to patiently as I can manage for a new DW game, I'm sure the war of Troy game they do will be interesting and all but it's just not the same if I can't play as Lu Bu. Hopefully they've gotten rid of that terrible Renbu system as well, that pretty much ruined DW 6 for me.

Aiden

Yea I thought the Renbu system was annoying, from what I have been reading it is almost like a revamp to the games and as a fan I will be picking it up. I prefer that over the Orichi warriors mix ups they have been doing.

I like Samurair Warriors and Dynasty Warriors...but I don't want them together. I do admit having Lubu, Honda and Maeda on a three man team was just broken.
SMASH, SMASH, SMASH, SMASH!

Ryven

Lubu has always been a force to be reckoned with even on the easier difficulties.

PS: Wei is the best kingdom ever.  Yay for Cao Pi and his twin swords!

Aiden

What! Me and Ryven agreeing on something? Amazing!  XD

-waves the Wei Banner-

Ryven

There were very few Wu and Shu characters that I enjoyed playing.  Besides, blue is the best color.

Heaven Sent Blossom

Shame that Cao Pi got nerfed in 6, of course the awesome change they made to Sima Yi really made up for all the other crappy character/cloning decisions they made in that game.

I've only played up to 4 on the PS2, but I was looking at the character art and designs for 7 on the official website today, and they're SO beautiful. I'm also happy to see a couple of new female characters, and I love some of the revamped looks for old favorites. ;D I love the graphics of Dynasty Warriors!

AND I just have to say this, as a Chinese history buff - I love that they've included Jin among the kingdoms, even though the Jin dynasty doesn't technically start until after they run amok over the Wei kingdom. I know DW isn't entirely historically accurate anyway, but it's nice to see those kinds of changes when the formula by and large stays the same.

Dynasty Warriors HOOKED me into Chinese History, reason I picked up The Three Kingdoms, kinda put a face (however inaccurate it was) to the historical aspect.

I am looking forward to a similar game being made by Koei for Greec-Roman history, I think it is called Troy.

Violence

The Trojan one is called "Warriors: Legends of Troy". The Official European Site  Only six character designs shown on the page, but the designs are pretty sweet, honestly.  Achilles in particular looks pretty awesome.

Ohhhhh... Dynasty Warriors... genuinely one of my favorite gaming experience each and every time I play it.  Not to say that I can't understand why others might be disappointed in it.  Even I had a few complaints about 6... there seemed to be a lack of variety in the characters and the "are you freaking kidding me" difficulty of some of the challenges.

It is through Dynasty Warriors that I was introduced to a man that became one of my favorite historical figures...

I adore me some Lu Bu.  Through him, I also have a fondness for Diaochan, but as I understand there's no reason to believe the tragic romance they have in the games and stuff is even remotely based on fact. ^.^
"Inciting Violence" (O/O) | "Random Acts of Violence" (Requests/Ideas) | Language of Violence (A Story I'm Working On)

And it all breaks down at the role reversal . Got the muse in my head she's universal . Spinnin' me round she's coming over me.
Domestic Violence (My OC's) | The Art of Violence (Stuff I Draw'd) | The Absense of Violence (A/A)

Cravings::  ANYTHING with Ballerinas! | Playing a cheating wife/girlfriend scenario. | Something that lets me play Jaime Lannister.

*starting from the OP and pulling through to the end*

Yeah, DWO was...it was worth trying, but I couldn't force myself to like it. Lag made multiplayer combat unbearable and the single-player content was so threadbare as to be incomparable to any of the existing DW games. I love the idea of a massive DW game, but the execution just didn't work.

I played Shu for one reason: they had control of the southwest, and I wanted to play a jungle recruit. Location, location, location! (That and, given you could only borrow a few officers' basic movesets, I knew Zhao Yun was a good choice since that spear is great as a basic crowd-control pattern. Switched to the whip-chain later to try it out and good lord did it suck by comparison.) I'd probably look for a similar "barbarian" role if an open casting call for a DW RP started up here on Elliquiy, though to be honest I can't say I see how well that setting for RP would work out. Large-scale warfare-centric RP? Hm. Maybe, but I dunno. Those seem to kinda break apart into individual conflicts with timing issues more often than not.

Sidenote on the Shu rocks/Shu sucks debate: from what I recall in my various classes including RotTK in the curriculum, it seems that Shu was lifted up in the story as the honorable/virtuous side but in reality was seen as more of a usurper faction reaching for the throne when they didn't deserve it. Point of view's everything, eh? Personally I don't care for the politics either way. I work with the warriors who get the job done; let the higher-ups worry about the long-term consequences. (Translation: full spectrum of favored warriors - Zhao Yun, Zhou Tai, Gan Ning, Xiahou Dun... I don't play faction favorites. ;p 'Sides, custom warriors are where it's at!)

Bleh. I think I may eventually have to get a PS3 to try out the Troy version, but then again, I dunno. After this many games into the series it does feel like they've run out of effective additions to the formula. Why spend more on essentially the same game?

I was huge into Dynasty Warriors for awhile, but for me it's become what Street Fighter II was back in the 90s.  It just doesn't do enough with each new release to keep me interested.  The last one I played was 5 and that was largely because my old roommate convinced me to get it.  I had had enough after 4, but did have some fun with 5.

7 has online co-op. That right there makes it a day one purchase for me, frankly.
Legends of Troy looks like it will be pretty sick, and I can't wait to see the ludicrous spin they put on the concept.

That'd be more tempting if I knew anyone I'd be playing it with online, but I don't think my gaming friends are into that - they're more of an FPS crowd (yay L4D 4v4 games!).

Of course, I'd still have to buy one of the consoles offering it, and I dun think that'd be worth the cost just for some DW co-op, but that's just my situation.
