Any Interest in Pern?

I was curious as to whether anyone had ever tried running a Dragonriders game here on Elliquiy, and if not, if there'd actually be much interest in the idea?

Anne McCaffrey's books were very much PG13, but if one were to remove the fade to black technique, the licentiousness of Weyr life would make for Elliquiy worthy role-play, imo, that would encompass both hetro and homosexual scenarios with equal ease, plus providing room for political roleplay and adventure.

If based in a weyr, Dragon riders would need to be exempt from being victims of NC play for risk of upsetting their winged counterparts, but as a midtones game....?

When in the timeline would you be thinking of placing it. I haven't read the books in quite a while.

Well, from what I can gather from reading around, the easiest way to jump in, assuming everyone wants the drama of fighting thread, is to assume that AVIS (the colonists computer) was never found and therefore the course of the Red Star was never changed.

That also helps adhere to many of Ms. McCaffrey's rules about Pernese fandom where she doesn't want people so much as referring to Jaxom, Lessa, F'Lar etc, or being descended from them, or coming from, visiting, or mentioning in any detail Benden Hold, Benden Weyr or Ruatha Hold.  It's a bit hard to avoid 'em if you're daring enough to try and play 'canon'.

So perhaps a Weyr, maybe even a completely original one in the Southern continent, dealing with the arrival of thread one interval (aprox 250 turns) after the original Dragon books?

I have a couple of concerns though...  one of which is the scope.  Playing on Pern would have the potential to be... well, for want of a better term, MMORPGish.  It's quite possible there could be threads, threads and more threads, which I gather is not necessarily a desirable thing.  It would also be dependent (as are most games I suppose) on enough people being interested to join, although I don't think there's any problem with multiple characters as long as people are willing to play them.

Then there's the whole 'GM' thing...  (part of the reason for the location of this thread!   ;) )  While I have an awful amount of useless trivia clogging up my head, some of which is even relevant and about Pern, I generally have the administrative and organisational abilities of.... of...  err...  well, a non administrative and non organisational thingy.

Of course, that's another reason for testing the waters here in this thread.  If there were enough people interested enough in the idea, one of them might even be interested enough to be that organisational superstar!

(I'm not kidding by the way...  My computer desk exists in a state of perpetual chaos...)

Optionally go back a few passes, to the time before Lessa jumped to to bring the other riders forwards. That way you can avoid the Avis stuff, but still keep in canon.

Elvi

Why not start with a hatching and be a bunch of young hopefuls hoping to catch the attention of a hatchling?
It's been fun, but Elvi has now left the building

Mindhazingsquid

Yeah, I like starting with a hatching, you could set it some time before the thread but not 500 years (or what ever, it's been so long I've forgotten a lot of it.) like maybe 5 or 3 years so it could be kept as a plot device but not THE plot device.

Solace

Uhm... couple of problems (having just done some digging to refresh my memory).  If we go back just a teensy bit before Lessa jumps forward, then the only Weyr still functioning at that time was Benden, and as noted above, Ms. McCaffrey has forbidden use of Benden as a setting.

Now, on the plus side, during the 'Interval' during which that particular book opened, the Weyr was taking older candidates for hatchings so as not to irritate the Lords too much by taking off with their youngest and brightest.  Later on in the stories though, when they returned to tradition, with the exception of Queen dragon candidates, those 'searched' were mostly minors so they could mature with the dragons....  A process of some turns.

This means if you wanted to start your character at impression you'd have to pass on the the Adult material for some time In Game, as would the dragon.

So...  I guess the question becomes "Just how canon do people want their canon to be"?

Ooooh.... I want to be a dragonrider of Pern.  I want to be a member of the Queen's Wing... *giggles softly*

I want to know just what a Dragonrider of Porn is, I keep hearing about them but have no clue.

god i remember reading a book on Pern when i was younger..it's a pretty large series isn't it?

Solace

It is a pretty big series, mostly because in later years McCaffrey and her son have been writing books both about how Pern became settled and then lost contact with the rest of the Galaxy, and notable periods in all the centuries in between including several "filler" novels about important side characters in the original 6-7 books.

On the plus side, it means it's a pretty well thought out world and system with a rich tradition and history already at readers (and maybe fan fic writers and RPGers) fingertips.

On the down side, it means depending on how anal retentive you want to be, there's an awful lot to remember just in the name of authenticity.

I'd definitely be interested in playing, I've been rereading these books lately and the setting is rich with conflict and possibilities!
Do as you will, it's fun to explore.

Elvi

Perhaps we shouldn't be too anal about any of it?
Set up a game in a fictitious part of pern all together.

Isolated Weyr, completely different leaders, no contact with the others?
It's been fun, but Elvi has now left the building

King_Furby

That would probably be a good idea as there is just so much to the series. But i doubt anyone is going to get too anal on it people are pretty nice here.

Swedish Steel

And here I thought everyone here jumps at the chance of getting anal.

I think it's the best idea too...  err...  Referring to Elvi's suggestion that is.

Which just leaves the teeny tiny issue of "so would anyone actually be interested in running the thing?"  :)

RogueJedi

I am not up to running it.  But I might be willing to at least help.  I have some friends who run actual Pern RP's online...

RogueJedi

I would really LOVE to do this game.  I am willing to step up and help, preferably as a co-GM if needed.  But, what does everyone else want?

It isn't that hard to have a completely isolated weyr.  *sits and is excited about this game*

King_Furby

I think this idea could really take off.
