The Struggle

No, I'm not telling you who I am. If they know I'm here, talking to you, now? Oh, wow, they'd kill me. Horrible. And for a long time. And gods are immortal, so you can see how long that might actually be. Like, forever. They'd kill me forever. Shut up, I know it doesn't make sense.

Look, I don't have a lot of time, can we get to the point?

The lore in old theology textbooks are, at best, a laughable guess made by a tiny creature as to what the larger ones are thinking. May as well be a centipede trying to figure out the thoughts of an extra-terrestrial creature. Yes, that's it, a centipede. Imagine the humans are centipedes. Human centipedes. No, wait. That's horrible, forget I said that. Ants are too cliche. Caterpillars?

They're bugs, is the point. Very much bugs. They can't even think in the right ways to ensure they have any understanding of Divine intent whatsoever.

The truth is, the Divine always knew. They always knew that one day, expanding borders would see them pitted one against another. And they've had to decide. Is it worth condemning a whole race of people to die in order to secure their future? Of course it is. They're centipedes.

Caterpillars. Whatever.

Each pantheon has its own idea of an apocalypse, an event that would raze the earth, bring devastation and ruin to humanity, but what if humanity were never the target? What if the target had been other pantheons all along? In engaging in battle, the survivors gain strength at a surprisingly uniform pace. However, they manage to take contenders out of the running. In the end, they're left with adversaries just as powerful as they are. It'd have to be some hell of a red button to see a winner come out on top. That's where the soul harvest comes in.

If they can manage to create what we like to call -... well, look, in English, you might say a... a singularity, sure. It's a singularity. But a lot of stuff has to go into getting it set up so the world is in tune with the spirit energy of particular pantheons. That's why most pantheons have one dude who's kind of in charge of all the rest, cause none of us would choose to do this unless it was necessary. Enough energy to be channeled into the end, whatever that might be. Whether it's setting fire to everything like Jehovah wants to do - I'm not sure who got him on that whole dragon thing, but hey, kudos, the imagery is nice - or having everything float off into space cause a giant turtle gives up or maybe wolves eating everyone? Whatever the case, if they can eliminate some contenders, gather some strength and get everything in place, they can use their apocalypse to blast away any challengers that are left.

And sure, humanity is part of this, though they're not the target like they like to think. No, they're the battery. The power source.  Reaping humanity is what this has always been about.

The general challenge is to reap, store and ration enough souls to maintain the upper hand in the struggle, eliminating gods and goddesses while they are still vulnerable. Once the pantheons are pared down to those last few contenders, it's a race to engage their very own apocalypse. The Apocalypse! The best way to kill your rivals and ensure a never-ending influx of soul power for your own people. Alright, that's poor taste, but you get where I'm going with that. Whoever's left after the apocalypse has no choice but to believe in and follow the gods they have actual proof exist, now. And that becomes an even stronger, more reliable source or energy... it's a feedback loop, pumping them up.

This isn't the first time it's happened, either. Ever heard of the Fomorians? Or the Titans, for that matter? Hell, Jehova almost had them with that flood. If it wasn't for his bleeding heart and his favourite dolls, that collection would have completely gone under, too. Trouble is, they get complacent when they feel like their job is done, and start feasting on soul energy like there's always going to be a steady supply. Well, you and I, we know that's not necessarily true, don't we? They forget, though, every damned time, and then we have to go through this whole apocalypse thing.

Me? I hope you survive. I kinda like you. But just in case you don't, I'm sure they'll find someplace pretty to stick you. I'd choose your favourite and reserve your space now, if you can. Other options aren't so wonderful, in the end. On the bright side, won't be long till they eat you.



Come play in a semi-sandbox game that takes place in the shadows of our day-to-day lives, all over the world. Play a god, a mortal, some mythical creature or rebel deities (One each to begin, expanding as we play), embroiled in a battle for the power of the earth, a race against the clock and in deadly competition with the strings of destiny. Any pantheon will do, so long as it exists in our world and has lore to support.... something. Sorry, but at this time, not allowing any newly-created gods, newly-created realms, DnD gods, White Wolf spirits, nothing that doesn't exist in the cultural heritage of our real world, please. Because of the nature of the gods, there's an enthusiastic welcome for LGBTQ+ characters and players, but know that we will be setting the game in Extreme groups.

I just finished digging through some of the other information in the other thread, and I suppose I'm ready to work on a sheet.  I'll need to figure out powers and how that works, already have questions to that end... it will be nice to immediately have a foil right from the get go.

First Nations specifically-- coyotes are native only to North America, though I do remember reading about similarities with jackal and fox tricksters.

I have no problem if you want to play something specific to a particular band's lore, but I'm not going to hold you to any such specifics for that. That's a lot of in-depth study to do if you're not already familiar with it.

Lol I just hit upon an idea after looking through the information for this story and the interest thread as a whole.  I'm not sure how I'm going to go about it, but I had the thought that I COULD try my hand at Ares, the God of War from the Greek Pantheon.  I have a couple of other ideas if you'd rather I pick someone else or my idea doesn't pan out or whatever, but here was my thought which had me chuckling a little bit if nothing else.

Anyway, my idea is that the Greeks of old had everything more or less right when they started coming up with their stories for Ares and what they represented, except they got one little detail wrong.  Ares was not the muscle bound ape they thought he was, but rather he was really a she.  Oh she was definitely still the ultimate warrior of blood, murder, and chaos during every great conflict throughout history, but the chauvinistic pigs of that ere just couldn't relate war with a woman so they purposely got her gender wrong to suit their own egos.  She didn't like that very much as you'd expect, but damage done, no way to change it now despite having stirred up certain passions in a young man from Troy when he kidnapped a certain woman from her Greek husband.  'Cough' lol.  Anyway, my idea for a genderbent Ares was meant to be funny but I had every intention of playing seriously otherwise.  Just thought I'd see what you guys thought before getting too far into this.

Vergil - Hey, there, good to see you again. I have no problem with you playing a genderbent Ares, particularly since there's a plausible reason. For the record, I'm alright with genderbent anything, too, since vessels are just vessels. However you want to pull it off s fine by me, within reason. A lot of the gods shifted genders in some mythos anyhow, so it shouldn't be too much problem.

I HAVE been having a bit of a fixation on futas and what have you lately, and since gods can shapeshift and transform as they please for the most part, I was entertaining the idea that Ares can go either way as she likes if that'd be alright with you.  Her vessel doesn't have to be able to do so, but while she was banging Aphrodite that might have been something she enjoyed doing and perhaps even receiving, but if you'd rather I keep Ares either male or female, not some weird combination of the two whenever she chose, I can do that too.  It doesn't hurt to ask though right?  ;D

Anyway, beyond that strange fetish of mine lately, I'll stick to the regular stuff we all know about the God of War....minus the stuff with Kratos murdering my girl anyway lol.

I've got an exceptional amount of reading to do, but as a rough concept I imagine the Coyote as being nominally the same deity across all tribes. He is, after all, the teller of the First Lie; it's hardly a stretch to imagine she might very well spin stories that are separate-- or even contradictory-- among the many peoples. Y'know.

So, as far as the shapeshifting, I think that would be a secondary power at the very least, and limited to the genitalia and the appropriate accompanying reproductive cycle. I won't enforce it at that juncture, but I wouldn't mind seeing some self-imposed limitations. Full-on form shifting would have to wait until much closer to the third stage, nearly ascension.

To that end, you should all know there is at least one other person who came to me with a character with the intent to shape and gender shift. I have no limitations on this, as I've said in the past, gender shift is actually fairly common in godly mythos, so I have no problem having an abundance of those with the ability, but I would like to let you all know so that you have the best chance to choose the best characters for yourselves.

I can completely see there being a plethora of misdirecting stories between bands and tribes. That makes perfect sense and is completely within the Coyote's wheelhouse. Go nuts.

Edit: Faceclaim - That does look particularly sassy. It's alright, when you consider what the continent has come to since the time Coyote was in any real power, you could justify just about any descent. And wouldn't it just be like a trickster to deliberately choose outside of expectations just for the ability to be contrary and mock those expectations?

I almost went with Hathor of Egyptian pantheon fame, but having a cow as her animal of choice just seemed bleh for this group for some reason lol.  Sure she's a Goddess of Joy, Fertility, Childbirth, etc, and she's even known to throw in sex, music, and other things along those lines, but that cow bit just didn't work with me.

Character/Vessel's Nickname/Title/Alias:  Mortal Alias - Enyo.  (In some stories, Enyo was the sister to war, and thus a fitting name for her arms dealing alter ego.  In truth Ares chose the name, she just went along with it.)
Gender:  Female
Vessel Age:  32
Vessel Occupation:  Black market arms dealer.  Legally she's an investment banker that travels the world that specializes in hostile takeovers.  Most people don't know just how hostile though.
Education:  Several years at MIT and Harvard business, but has some would say an unhealthy fascination with wars of the past.

Alexandra Drakos was born in what was once known as Sparta, Greece, where the once proud Spartans, the strongest, most respected warriors of the ancient world, once resided.  While she had a relatively normal upbringing, parents that loved her, an older brother that tormented her as siblings often will, and even a horse she rode regularly that no one else could approach for fear of being kicked or thrown off, there was something slightly different with Alexandra.  From a very young age, she had found that war, conflict, and the people that led such brutal campaigns, to be utterly fascinating.  Catching her grandfather watching a documentary on the subject, World War II to be exact, Alexandra remembered being enraptured by the entire affair that played out on the small screen since TVs had still been relatively small and bulky in those days.  While she seemingly grew out of what many considered an unhealthy fascination with the subject, Alexandra simply shifted her focus onto topics that related to her true love.  The business side to be precise.  Where other kids were busy trading collectible cards and worrying about who they were going to go out with to the movies or the school dance, Alexandra was busy at the local library after her parents moved to New York when she was twelve, reading up on anything she could get her hands on relating to business, trade deals historical and present day, and eventually, firearm control laws and regulations.  Her studious if questionable behavior would serve her well through life as she devoted her energies to her future career that would lead to a string of successes in and out of the classroom.  What she wanted, she got through her own efforts, on her own terms, and there was no mistaking the fact that she was going to be someone to watch when she left for college when she was nineteen.

The dreams from her godly counterpart started three years before that.  The night she turned sixteen had seen the beginning of memories not her own.  Of seeing the world through the eyes of a giant, or so her mortal mind had tried to comprehend the impossible things she saw during those early days.  While they didn't come every night, sometimes she'd go entire weeks without a dream, Alexandra got used to seeing the world through the eyes of her god as she stared down upon an ever changing field of war situated in a stone diorama that shifted and changed as the woman required it with a mere wave of her hand.  Sometimes the miniature model was still as the stone it was carved from, completely inert and lifeless, but when she willed it, Alexandra was often gifted with a front row seat to every conflict to have ever raged across the surface of their world as people bled and died for king, country, religion, and more.  She could smell the smoke, hear the screams of the dying, and saw herself as she stalked the bloodsoaked fields, reveling in the carnage the mortals wrought against each other.  Alexandra never once wondered if she was going crazy, because she always felt incredibly powerful during these dreams.  A feeling she enjoyed, and one that ironically helped her to become who she would later in life, and that was an indomitable force of nature in and out of a boardroom once she graduated college after going for her masters in business from MIT and Harvard, having transferred to the latter after a torrid love affair with one of her professors' daughters.

That wouldn't be the only time she'd be caught in bed with someone she shouldn't have been, but at twenty one, before she had finished her studies, Alexandra got her first taste of what it was like to be viewed as the weaker sex.  An idiotic jock that thought he could get lucky with her made the mistake of slapping her ass.  When she didn't immediately fall for his brutish attempts at wooing her into his bed, he got violent, but he regretted it when she picked herself off the floor and cracked a bottle of booze over his head.  She then proceeded to kick the shit out of him, only stopping when his bladder lost all control and he ended up pissing himself.  Despite the fact she had crossed a line although she had been in the right by defending herself, most people had congratulated her in standing up for herself while her few detractors had called her a cock-tease, among other, far less savory things.  Those same people had been friends with the jock, but the few he had had left after news got out about how he'd been beaten by a girl and forced to soil himself as a result, were few and far between.  Humiliated and defeated so soundly, his reputation and standing among his peers in ruins, the jock was all but laughed out of school where he would later be ran over by a Ferrari after stumbling out of the local liquor store, drunk as a skunk and stewing in his own morose.  While not death by chariot as she would have preferred, the symmetry certainly wasn't lost on Alexandra when she heard about the moron's demise.

But the rush she had gotten out of putting the jock down in the first place, to have so utterly beaten and humiliated him, was nearly as good as the sex she regularly partook in with her fellow female students.  There had been a couple of men along the way when her need was great enough, but most times it wasn't unheard of for Alexandra to have at least one woman on her arm at any given time.  And as her conquests can all tell you, she was the best lay they had ever had.  Like her fascination with war however, Alexandra got good at hiding her nightly activities by being less of a sleaze and more of a consummate lover that sampled the finer things in life when the mood struck her.  And while it was hardly unusual for young women like herself to explore what they liked in the sack, among other things, it was slightly unusual for someone to have a veritable harem of women and a few men almost constantly going through her dorm room door, or through the window, during her several years of college and university education.  She had her favorites of course, but it hadn't been unheard of for Alexandra to go after the truly beautiful specimens that were often harboring a wicked side underneath their prim and proper appearances.  Virgins were boring to her though, they needed to be skilled at what she wanted out of them.

Having completed her studies when she was twenty eight, Alexandra had much more fully embraced her inner War God by this point who had thus far given her a great deal more than she could have ever achieved on her own.  That confidence if prideful arrogance she became known for, her ability to never break under pressure, and her temper all became the regular topic up for discussion anytime her name was brought up..  Her business sense however was just as driven and ruthless and yet people always went to her for advice that she freely gave.  Alexandra had been out to prove that she was a force to be reckoned with despite the fact she had a pair of tits and her reproductive organs happened to be in the inside, but when Ares finally came to call and took over her mind and body, Alexandra didn't offer much of a fight because deep down, she had always known she was merely paving the way for her diety's eventual ascension.  She currently resides in the mental equivalent of a posh, upscale, high rise penthouse where she's able to observe everything Ares does with her body.  Even if her hand isn't on the controls anymore, Alexandra isn't complaining because Ares has been good to her her whole life, and the rest of eternity promises to be quite exhilarating.

Now she enjoys the view from warlord penthouse suites and dictators' private offices as Ares fuels the world's desire for bloodshed.  She even has an alias the FBI and ATF organizations have dubbed her with, which is far more fitting than they could ever imagine.  Enyo, the sister to Ares.  Ares still occasionally 'talks' to her within her mind prison, because they had been a team for so long, and despite her own pride and arrogance, she is no fool either and values the wisdom and insight Alexandra has often provided the warmongering goddess.

General Appearance:  Alexandra is as tough as she is beautiful, if in a hard, unsmiling kind of way.  She carries herself as if she were attending a high end business meeting even though most of her 'meetings' are normally located on the edge of a battlefield that has yet to happen.  Tall, straight, and with a commanding presence in virtually any room or open field she enters, every eye normally finds her at some point, and there has always been something....off putting about the way her eyes seem to penetrate the very soul.  She is the one in charge though, she doesn't shake, rattle, or roll in any way, and she isn't afraid of death.  Her will is as hard and unrelenting as the arms she sells to the highest bidder, and while she has had run ins with the authorities, she has thus far avoided incarceration beyond an inconvenient search every so often anytime she leaves or enters a new country.  When she isn't making deals that always end the same way, with the death of countless people regardless of age, race, or gender, Alexandra can normally be found on her cellphone, doing the actual 'legal work' she is normally pretending she is doing since she does have an actual job that doesn't involve the selling and buying of illegal hardware to dictators, warlords, and worse, although her normal day job is almost as bad in some ways since she has a preference for aggressively taking over businesses.

Despite being a merchant of death, as the old name for such people used to go, Alexandra dresses in finely tailored suits, low cut dresses, and gym shorts and pants as well as short or no sleeve shirts since she makes it a part of her morning regime to get at least an hour of physical exercise in a day so that she is ready for the rest of the day, whatever it might bring.  As a result, Alexandra is well built, perfectly fit, without a trace of unnecessary fat or flab to be found on her otherwise perfect body.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Alexandra has been shot at more than once, although the only time she was ever injured that ended up leaving a scar was when she was leaving a business deal that turned south.  As a result, she has a little bullet graze scar across her left thigh where a 9 mil bullet passed by, cutting the skin but doing little else.  She also has a pair of dove wings tattooed across her shoulder blades, in honor of her love affair with Aphrodite, although Alexandra had a girlfriend once upon a time that also favored doves before she took over.
Vessel Personality:  Alexandra Drakos has never been a fan of the chauvinistic, misogynistic belief that men were better than women in anything.  To her, men were just as barbaric now as they were back when they were still using sticks to bash each other over the head, and this was long before Ares started to make her presence known.  As a result, while she has no problem with doing business with either gender, the moment someone starts trying to push her around or saying that they're somehow better than her is normally the moment they're on the ground, holding onto their reproductive organs because she's usually put her knee between their legs with crushing force.  If the offense to her person or that of another she has taken a fancy to is grave enough, she'll make it a point to humiliate the offender, to the point that their reputation and standing with those around them will never be the same again.  Death is a release from pain after all, and Ares knows better than anyone that to truly destroy someone is to not kill the body, but rather the spirit.  And it goes with her general personality anyway in that she is always the person that others seek out, that is always in charge and she makes sure people know it, even if she has to snap someone's neck to make them realize it.

Unfortunately, her greatest strength can be her greatest weakness, and that is her pride in herself.  Challenging her incites her to anger, which can be exploited by a clever enough opponent.  Hephaestus certainly managed it, although at the time Ares had been busy with Aphrodite, but the point remains the same.  Her pride as a skilled lover to the Goddess of Beauty, and many others besides, got in the way of her common sense and warrior cunning.  Alexandra was no different in that she took great pride in her work, both legal and otherwise, and she too had been outwitted a couple of times by those that knew which buttons to push, but they underestimated her ability for bloody vengeance and paid the price for their transgressions at a later time.  They certainly learned not to fuck with her afterwards though.  But Ares couldn't have asked for a better vessel, because there is few better ways than to venerate war and all that it stands for than to supply its need to the highest bidders, who are most often quite the delightfully unscrupulous kinds of people.  And both Ares and Alexandra are quite good at meeting that demand.  Athena can keep her strategies, because what good is any plan without people with the will and the savagery to implement them in the first place?

Godly Powers:  Uncanny Persuasion - Ares has been known to stir up the passions and rages of those around him, leading men and women alike to bloody slaughter and chaos.  As a result, it's not at all uncommon for the warmongering goddess to be able to easily persuade people to great acts of inhuman behavior against their fellow man.  Violence is and always will be her bread and butter, and Ares has no problem whatsoever using her human's resources to further her end goal of a war to end all wars in the name of the Greek pantheon.  To say she and Alexandra could sell snake oil back to its owner, and make a profit off of the transaction to boot, wouldn't be a far stretch at all, although her deals always end up with someone dying at some point.

Passion Inducement - As stated previously, Ares is the equivalent of heavy amounts of alcohol mixed in with an unhealthy amount of repressed, animalistic rage and instinct.  People tend to feel unusually resentful and angry anytime she's in close proximity, although some people give way to more carnal desires of a darker, sometimes violent nature that normally results in both parties bouncing off the walls in a rough and tumble fashion as they tear at each other's clothes.  She can control what it is the mortals feel to an extent, often using this gift to help in her negotiations, but some people don't need an excuse to be angry or prone to bouts of violence, and this can potentially backfire if she isn't careful.  All it takes is a spark to set a blaze after all.
Godly Artifact: Each deity has an artifact that has survived the ages, imbued with their power. Unfortunately, it has not survived the changes in vessel in contact enough to keep up with the constant changes, and has been lost to time. Each deity has a chance to hunt down their artifact, but will need to trace it from its last known resting place. So, whether Athena's spear or Ma'at's feather, somewhere out there is something belonging to each deity and capable of exponentially increasing their strength.
Deity History/Mythology: Most people are familiar with the basic myths of some of the most commonly-shared deities of the world, but sometimes there are aspects that simply don't wind up shared with the world quite so readily. When in doubt, pick some of the minor ones.  or demi-gods.  Or things like that.

OR you could always say that when someone takes over a god, they get a fresh start.  Death, body flip, etc.  Which would also account for a change in personality.

You could also look for aspects/counterparts of gods. Like with Artemis you could make a NPC of Diana, keeping the original Greek goddess available. In Egypt Bast's role was diminished over time and she was renamed Bastet, so you could use the latter while keeping the former free.

Vessel Biography/History: Born to a wealthy investment banker for a father and a politically active doctor for a mother, Johann was destined for success. Breezing through his education as a child noted for his calm demeanor and forward-thinking, he was accepted to the University of Copenhagen as a matter of course. Focusing on his studies, he nonetheless appeared at the fringes of virtually every socially subversive rally and organization in the city, never involving himself so much as to generate a scandal. After attaining his Masters in Economics, he went to work at his father's firm in a low level position, one which simultaneously granted him fiscal independence and left him free to pursue his further education. Leaving his professional field for the moment, he took a double major in Theology and Business Law, devouring knowledges arcane and mundane with equal fervor until the former finally consumed his undivided attention. With years of study under his belt, Johann surpassed his retired father in the family business and hit the European scene as an outspoken skeptic, decrying monolithic religion as a system of anti-scientific surpression and control. At the same time, he was moving significant sums of money to grass-roots neo-pagan movements as an anonymous backer, effectively funding a variety of ethno-poltical groups across Scandinavia and Germany.

General Appearance: What Johann wears depends entirely upon the situation, and sometimes the situation calls for a leather jacket and blue jeans. More often, however, he relies on a narrow variety of dark blue or black suits, often pinstriped. Really though, the man would be just as at his ease naked; the important thing is that he is comfortable in his own skin.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Numerous small scars, particularly on his face and hands. Where they were earned and what caused them is a matter of some debate amongst his fans.
Vessel Personality: Friendly, generous, and gregarious is the face Johann presents to the world, the kind of public figure a journalist has to dig long and hard on to find a goofy photo or choppable soundbite. His speech is always deliberate and considered, his taste in tailored suits impeccable, and his hair kept and styled while still maintaining a sort of affable scruffiness. Behind the facade of a well-meaning progressive is an old, cold soul, one which is only interested in power and advancement of his interests in all things. As comfortable in a smoky dive bar as giving testimony before a court, he often gives speeches and participates in debates which are televised across the world, as well as making shady backroom deals with people who frequently have no idea who he is in the daylight.

God's Personality: Odin has shaped Johann so much over the decades that they're practically identical.

Rule of Law: Odin can compel another to fulfill their end of a bargain or contract, provided he has lived up to his, regardless of their wishes or desires.
Wandering Eyes: By entering meditation, Odin can perceive through the eyes and ears of his servants, Huginn and Muginn, wherever they might be.
Chooser of the Slain: With his spear Gungnir in hand, Odin becomes a master of battle, able to select individuals from afar to be brought down by the unerring weapon. Gungnir can be blocked, but usually not dodged. It requires the thrower to be able to see the target, and must be retrieved to throw again. Any mortal slain by Gungnir in battle can be assumed to have died an honorable death.
Godly Artifact: Gungnir, the Swaying One, a spear which cannot miss no matter how unskilled or weak the throw. It broke the spear of Siegmund and was in turn broken by his son, Siegfried.
Deity History/Mythology: Odin is an old, old god. Maybe as old as the Egyptians, with a greater reach over a much longer period. Perhaps uniquely among all deities, his strength was not diluted by the difference in the names he was called, including being worshipped as "He of the hundred names". He was in the forests of Europe and the mountains of Scandinavia, crossed the seas to Britain with the Vikings and rode the steppes of Asia with the Kievan Rus. He watched over the mercenary Varangians as they fought for the Basileus of Rome in the Middle East, even as sailors begged his aid while making the long voyage across the western seas to Vinland. Only the rise of the White Christ in Europe brought an end to his dominance, and even that hasn't been enough to destroy him completely; the old myths and legends brought over from the Old World had hardly tarnished at all in the New before comic books and movies engendered a resurgence of paganism. Furthermore, he is one of the foremost gods claiming wisdom as their domain; what he can't do, he'll teach... for a price.

The upshot of all which is, Odin is extremely versatile. There's a reason that all of his enemies tend to wind up banished, chained, or dead, and whenever it seemed he was gone it turned out to be just another long game ending in his victory. If you think you've beat him, if you think you've got him on the ropes, if you think you have the upper hand and there's no way he can get out of it, it means he's probably reveling in the anticipation of sinking the knife into your back. Unbeatable? No. But you're probably better off being his lack-- Friend.

Where other Aesir and Vanir might hold the lion's share over a domain, Odin will be certain to have his interests there as well. For the purposes of the game, one can assume his Domains to be: Wisdom, Runes, and Law.
Godly Weakness: Odin cannot break his word, at the cost of his own power and, eventually, life. If he says he will, he must, with no ritual required other than the explicitly spoken words. Aside from that, Fenrisulfr is prophesied to slay him during Ragnarok; whether that is protection from death otherwise, or simply a sign that he is not so immortal...

Lol and people wonder why I took the shield as my artifact.  I like him though Winterborn and I'm looking forward to meeting this particular Odin.  Keep in mind however he's not the only one that had a resurgence in fans and followers.  While she might not like them, Ares had that God of War video game series that's currently getting a new edition as Kratos cuts his way through the Norse pantheon lol.  So the God of War WILL be annihilating his way through the likes of Loki, Odin, and all the rest I imagine if it turns out like the original series did.
