Remiel

"MURDER!" cried Remiel, who was nearly frothing at the mouth by this point. "Murder most foul! A plague on both your houses! They have made worm's meat of poor Rolin."

He stared up at the corpse of Rolin, currently crumpled on the catwalk.

"What fools have we mortals been!  I am beginning to believe the murderer is not one, but all three of you, so complicit are you in your banality.  But hark! The mystery is then, not why Rolin is dead, but, rather, why am I alive?  For if the murderer was Valerian, surely she should have silenced me, after having her accuséd of't.  The fact that I am here says otherwise.  Marguerite, then?  Likewise, that I voted for her, surely mine the voice that must be silenced.

"But no! Whoe'er the grim and honorless rogue it was, perforce decided that Rolin, that drunkard, with his random accusations, was a more dangerous threat than the three of us, who, on the face of it, should have yet retained their wit and wisdom.  What does that say?  A fool, voting randomly, is better to have quietus borne than three fools with their so-called 'logic'.  Reasoning thus, I can conclude only that we were on the mistaken path all along, and it is in fact Izu who has been playing us all."

Valerian

Val backed slowly away from Remiel as he went through these fits.  "I'm not sure any of us have retained our wit and wisdom at this point," she murmured uneasily.
"To live honorably, to harm no one, to give to each his due."
~ Ulpian, c. 530 CE

Remiel

Remiel nodded, matter-of-factly.  "So it is Valerian, then...just as I thought."

"There's no trust,

No faith, no honesty in men; all perjured,

All forsworn, all naught, all dissemblers."

The words of The Nurse tumbled dramatically from Remiel's lips as he, like those before him, was drawn to the center stage as the red spotlight fixed on him leaving him drenched in crimson shadows.  Yet, like so many before him, it wasn't an Understudy that was caught in the noose's coil but an innocent Thespian.

The final Understudy remained at large and the last two Thespians knew they were not safe.

"Famine is in thy cheeks,
Need and oppression starveth in thy eyes,
Contempt and beggary hangs upon thy back.
The world is not thy friend, nor the world's law;
The world affords no law to make thee rich;
Then be not poor, but break it, and take this."

The fair Thespian Marguerite gave a dramatic sweep of her hand as Romeo's words fell easily from her lips.  The last sounds died just as the air above her shifted and the terrible axe came swinging down from the catwalk.  Just as its deadly arc cleaved for her neck the curtain fell, the thud of her body barely muffled, seemingly fitting that poor Romeo met his end before that of Juliet.

#112
Slowly Valerian emerged from stage left, the stage light gleaming off the long sword she carried.  There needed no verbal confirmation that she, the woman cast in the role of Lady Montague, was indeed the last Understudy and murderer of so many innocent Thespians.  There was a glimmer of surprise in her eyes when Izu blindly reached to the side, a sword momentarily pushed into his hands from off stage, and he turned to her.

"I have no joy of this contract to-night:
It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden;
Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be
Ere one can say 'It lightens!'"

Izu cried out the fair Juliet's words, flinging off his cape with a flourish and leaping forward, his sword thrust out toward the final Understudy.  There was not but a moment for the Understudy to react, the tip of the sword piercing her cold heart just as the curtain unraveled and heavily fell to the floor.  The final Thespian had prevailed.

The applause that followed from the audience thundered.
