My favorite would have to be Everquest.

I know, World of Warcraft's design is better and its user interface is amazing, but EQ was the first game that I spent hours upon hours playing. After we first installed it, my husband and I played it 36 hours straight, not realizing a day had passed us by. You do not have to say it, we realize we are geeks.

We'll I've only really got Guild Wars, which I don't play that often really. But it was a great game and I did play it eighteen hours straight.

I used to play MUME (MultiUser in Middle Earth) A LOT in uni..completely text based, but so much fun. Never really got into any 'proper' MMORPG..been wanting to code my own, though *slinks away to the geek corner*

How is it I've never tied Chess to Erotic thoughts...mmmm

I like WoW. A LOT.... A LOT. :) elf girls are just so darn cute.

What's abandonware? never heard of it.

DarkestDreams

Abandonware is a type of software..when a company decides to no longer support the software in any kind of way (and it's over a certain amount of years old) it becomes abandoned..which means it's freely (And legally) available for download.

One example is Lemmings..i LURVE Lemmings! :D

The law is murky about it.  I'm not a fan of all laws or legalist philosophy but dirty though we are I'd like us to stay clean, okay? ^_^

Back on topic, favorite MMORPG and why...

I've played a lot of them.  I'm a casual MMORPG player.  I don't like kill-rinse-repeat over and over and over.  I want to see and explore new areas, complete quests, enjoy the world.  Not grind.

I've enjoyed the lowest levels of Everquest, Everquest II and World of Warcraft.  However, for all of those, as you advance, you need to find a large group of other people and be willing to spend hours in front of a computer screen - often killing the same things over and over and over.  Worse, you end up needing a guild where to complete any quest you have the help of someone much more powerful than you.  That's not being a hero!  That's being a sidekick.  >:(

So, of them all my favorite would be Dark Age of Camelot.  Why?  Best support for the casual gamer.   Strong storyline that starts low and continues all the way through to epic level.  You can solo a lot and the quests are usually broken down into a lot of steps that don't involve too much grind-grind-grind.

Hunter

I'm currently playing rappelz.  It's completely free, though it uses a point and click interface rather than the WASD controls.

Bayushi

I've played a bunch of MMO's. Some of them were fun for awhile, some annoyed the hell of me, and some were/are fun still.

Annoyed the hell out of me: Any version of EQ, Star Wars: Galaxies, and Final Fantasy XI. In all actuality, I played FFXI for a whole half hour before tossing it in the bin, since it had no return value. EQ.... well.... it's not called Evercrack for no reason, and there were WAY too many idiots roaming the landscape. SW:G has had so many technical difficulties and rollbacks that I'll never even install it on the PC again.

Fun for awhile: Guild Wars. For months, I played Guild Wars religiously, leveling and ascending two characters, a Monk/Elementalist(Fire), and a Warrior/Monk. I enjoyed the game, but saw so many shortfalls, such as the lack of interactivity in it's environment and the silly limit on how many abilities you could use at any one time. I can't even bring myself to reinstall it and the Factions expansion on this newer PC.

Fun Still: World of Warcraft(Live and The Burning Crusade Beta)... I have a Level 60 Human Rogue, and since the most recent content patch, have become a player-killing machine. Sadly, for now, at Level 60 there is not much left to do but try and get better gear. I will admit that the strategizing and cooperation with guildmates/raid-members is a lot of fun to me. I raid 3-4 nights a week when I'm not sick(been sick a LOT lately. :(). When the Burning Crusade expansion leaves Beta and goes live, I will happily rest with the fact that I will know a good bit already about the new content, and will be able to level again. I intend to level from 60 to 70 as quickly as I can, given the needs of sleep, food, and restroom breaks. Once I am there, I will happily rest for a short time then get involved once again in my guild and raids.

Oddly enough, when I was still playing Guild Wars, I was refusing to even TRY World of Warcraft. I thought the idea of PAYING to play, even though I had already forked out the cost of the game itself was absurd. In the end, I could blow the $15 required per month in a half hour at a coin-op arcade. So..... $15 per month honestly goes a long way. Especially when you play the game as much as I do.

King_Furby

I have tried many MMO's but there have been few i have enjoyed. I played PlanetSide for awhile and loved it during the six month trial period. But it was just not good enough to pay for and i was not going to pay $25 a month for it. Then I played maplestory for awhile but it really did not have much in the form of enjoyment..it was just not polished enough. After that i looked at several other MMO's but found nothing i wanted to play.

This brings me to my favorite MMO, which i now just totally love. I first found it from a website that listed over 100 free and pay for MMO's. This MMO i found had released a free no credit card required 15day trail so i was like heck i'll try it. It was only $12 bucks a month after the 15days and durning those 15 days i got hooked so i started to pay for it. I have started my second month now and still enjoy it just as much.

This game i am talking about is Ragnarok Online. It has many classes, and each class branches off into two different class paths. There is the classic wizzard, theif, swordmen, archer classes but also adds a merchant and a class that is for total support..a healer of sorts. This game lets you fight many monsters..its not just one monster over and over and over. There are many different monsters to kill, a very solid party system, quests all that good stuff. It's worth a look i do encourage you to at least try it. Here is a link to learn more about it if anyone wants to check it out http://iro.ragnarokonline.com/

Mika

I could list many but right now my addition is KOL or Kingdom of Loathing.
I love it number one because its free. YAY! Number two because I understand all the corny jokes and items that they are making fun of like phonics down...*snickers* I'm a final fantasy nut but anyways itd fun, free, kewl jokes and kerl t-shirts to get ab all that jazz......I'm sure I'll find a new addiction but right now KOL is my drug of choice since I don't want to shell out money for another addiction since Im about to graduate college.

I'm currently playing City of Heroes / Villians (mostly my villians) and Planetside, though I suppose its not quite an -RPG. I'm keeping an eye on Warhammer Online and the Stargate one that are due out next year (I think). There's also a Star Trek one in the works, but I've not been paying as much attention to it.

Alot of MMO fans are excited about Stargate Worlds, even thought it will probably be scratched just like the last stargate game which was going to be  a FPS. But if Stargate Worlds does actually get released i would go out and play it pretty much no matter what. It would be nice to play a stargate game especially when stargate sg-1 will no longer be making new episodes

HairyHeretic

SG-1 won't, but apparently the OK has been given for a new SG series.

I play in Sociolotron.  It's an adult MMORPG.  Sex, politics, survival, crime...The graphics are crude but it's a lot of fun.

Myself, I am addicted to WoW.  I play it most  everyday.  I usually log several hours a night during the week, and quite a few more on weekends, at least when the weather is not too nice.  GF works for a nursery, so unless she is exhausted from too much work under the sun, she likes to be outside on the weekends.

And another Minority Vote for COH/V (mostly H side here)

Though I can't play right now, due to government internet and such, but I run the clan Brotherhood of Brujah on Protector
