The spring of 1272. The Third Nilfgaardian-Nordling War has thrown the world into the maw of chaos. Refugees from blood-soaked lands stream to Novigrad, a rich Free City on the Pontar River, bringing with them the tales of woe and death and fear.
Easy it has been for the terrified citizens of Novigrad to fall under the fanatical influence of the Church of the Eternal Fire, even easier to find a scapegoat responsible for causing the war – non-humans and magic users stand accused in equal measure. Sanctioned and led by the Church, a great purge has begun... Whosoever falls in the hands of witch-hunters, soon stands at a stake, twisting in agony as flames devour their skin and flesh. No non-human or mage is safe. For many, having powerful protectors has become a necessity, the only way to stay alive.
Behind the smoke of morbid funeral pyres, in the labyrinth of city sewers, in safe-houses and back alleys hides the criminal underworld. Ruled by five crime lords, this other side of Novigrad prospers on robberies, burglaries, illegal fighting in the arena and equally illegal bets in the casino, corruption of the powerful, smuggling, contract assassinations, black market trade, and protection services.
This world has its own wars, its lords their own goals.
This is the world which has nurtured the elf Eoin Bri Cri for four long years. It has seen him escape a certain death in the fort of Drakenborg, and it has witnessed his rise to power as the leader of Red Ravens, currently one of the five largest gangs in Novigrad.
Eoin cares little about the human armies rattling their steel on both sides of the river; in his private war, he has only one goal – to undo the great injustice inflicted upon the fifty-three leaders of the Vrihedd Brigade who were sacrificed in the aftermath of the Second Nilfgaardian-Nordling War. His brother Angus was amongst those fifty-three elven officers butchered in the Ravine of the Hydra, and Eoin is determined to bring him and his brethren back.
Before the life-giving ritual can be performed, he must find and seize the Cauldron of Life and the Spear of Destiny, abduct the traitorous elven queen whom he blames for the deaths in the Ravine of the Hydra, and secure the services of a mage willing to spill her blood in the ritual. An eye for an eye, blood for blood, death for death.
At last, he has amassed enough wealth to see the harsh justice come and the dead returned to life. But with the war ravaging the land, with the witch-hunters hounding mages and non-humans alike, he cannot hope to accomplish his mission alone... He needs companions to join the endeavor. It makes little matter whether they do so for gold or on account of sharing his conviction. So long as they prove their skills with steel or magic, they will be welcome.

Red Ravens is a high fantasy game with an overarching plot. It starts with the Provings in which each adventurer earns his place in the band, and will follow the main mission developments to the climax of the story. Side quests related to the main one will be included, and companion quests will be welcome (these will be personal to each of the characters, connected to their aspirations, history, beliefs... Players will have free rein to design these quests for their character(s), provided that they won't take a course contrary to the main mission. Please note: these quests will still need to be approved by GM before they are introduced in the IC thread).
An important aspect is character development based on experience points accumulated in the game. Experience points are awarded for defeating enemies, completing quests, successfully performing other in-game tasks (lockpicking, research, resource/ intelligence gathering, disarming traps, performing healing, etc.), and even for romantic/ sexual engagements (that's certainly a valid way to gain experience too, no?).
The game utilizes a classic class system: warrior/rogue/mage.
Character growth is based on the combination of attributes, abilities, and skills. Upon gaining a level, a character receives a certain number of attribute, ability, and skill points to use. Attributes affect what kind of armor and weapons the character can use, abilities give access to special attacks, actions and permanent bonuses for warriors and rogues, as well as to spells and permanent bonuses for mages. Skill points govern the character's proficiency in several non-combat areas.
The system is explained in The Guide to Character Build and Growth.
Characters are approved based on being the best fit for the group – the recruitment doesn't run on the first come, first served principle. I'm currently looking for up to 3 players to join our game. I might be convinced to let players play two characters, especially if we end up with a smaller player base.
Players don't play NPCs (an exception would be made for a co-GM. If you'd be interested in co-GM-ing the game, please let me know).

The intention for this game is to feature as much of the plot driven content as of the organic development of interpersonal relationships. Romance and sex are most welcome, in the main game threads. The organic development of relationships means that some characters might choose monogamy, other might prefer polyamory, yet others might opt to stay away from romantic entanglements. It is all alright, and they will figure it out IC. Expect a healthy dose of dalliance and testing the waters before stable relationships form.

I hope to run a game that is great fun for the players, and in which the character growth, IC interpersonal relationships, and the extent of influence on the story provide a lasting motivation to play. That said, characters receive tangible in-game rewards as well, in the form of loot and payment for services rendered. Gold can be spent on better gear and on customization of personal quarters. Each character has his own room within the home base, furnished according to his personal wealth and tastes.

This game features (grim) dark themes. Combat violence, death (not of the PCs, unless agreed upon), torture, abduction, abuse, mind control, mutilation (even of the PCs, if agreed upon) will all be portrayed in its course. The game runs on the Extreme Board to allow for a realistic portrayal of such dark topics. Non-consensual sexual encounters within the Red Ravens Brotherhood aren't condoned and thus generally won't be experienced, however the PCs will face hostile forces which may inflict considerable damage and pain upon them. In that context, non-con encounters aren't off the table. Given the plot and the overall tone, the game won't be censored to exclude potential personal triggers. There is however a general warning at the beginning of any IC thread to inform anyone who might wish to read along.

This is designed as a long-term game. Please only consider joining if you have every intention to run with it long-term. To keep the momentum going, players are expected to post at least once a week. Posts should be at least four paragraphs long (shorter ones may occasionally be acceptable in the midst of a combat scene). Spelling and grammar should show a solid command of English. Overall, the game is designed for players with advanced storytelling and writing skills.

To let the story flow smoothly, all posts are written in the past tense. Players write in the 3rd person POV. GM uses omnipresent POV for meta posts. Players write their actions, but not the resolution of interactions. This rule extends to their interactions with NPCs and environment. The GM writes meta posts describing the outcome of the PC's actions when it comes to the NPC/environment response. For example, not every lock your character attempts to pick will yield, nor will every foe he intends to strike with his sword stand and wait to be hit. Some might evade the blow :)

Short term absences (up to two weeks) can be easily handled – a short PM is enough. The post order will skip you if you cannot post in a particular week, or –if you let us know in advance– your character will stay in the camp, which is by far the easiest way to deal with short term absences of the player. If you need to step away for up to a month, GM will take temporary control of your character. If you can't post for more than a month, the character will be offered for a temporary adoption by another player in the game. After two months of your continuous absence, such an adoption will turn permanent.

Red Ravens is an all male brotherhood. The gang, while not the most influential of the five, attracts men of particular persuations. It is known in the underworld as a haven for those who prefer romantic and sexual company of their own sex. That is not a small deal in the world where the human society doesn't view homosexual relationships favorably.
Consequently, the game is open to male characters only. The writer's gender doesn't matter – all that matters is the ability to portray a male character realistically and confidently.
A transgender character is welcome so long as he has completed a full transition (I would be willing to make an accommodation in the sense that the magic used in this world allows for such a transition without surgery – though the costs are likely prohibitive for characters of humble origins).
Characters will be members of the gang, though not necessarily from the very start. Eoin selects his companions for this mission based on skills, and will consider even the newest recruits if their abilities impress him. Similarly, he is accepting both of non-humans and humans.
Playable races: elves, humans, mutants (witchers: their metabolism is altered by poisonous concoctions the administration of which very few survive. They live longer, have faster reflexes than humans, can ingest potions that would have killed them prior to their mutation, but they are infertile and are said to be stripped of all emotions – the latter is not always the case though).
Character submissions will be done via PM to allow for a private discussion. All characters will have fears/ weaknesses/ flaws that will be included in the PM but that won't be listed on the CS made available to all players.

I am both the game's GM and a player. My character is Eoin Bri Cri whose likeness you can see below.

A directory of all active characters in our game can be found here.

Faces in the gallery of available face claims belong to well-known canon characters of Dragon Age/ Game of Thrones. What can I say – I like them. However, don't let the likeness limit your creativity regarding the character's background and personality.

Name: Please choose a name that will fit into the Witcher world. Most elven names are derived from Welsh and Irish names, human names are often of Polish provenience for Nordlings, Viking provenience for people of the Skellige, and of Dutch origin in case of Nilfgaardians
Alias: (only if you want)
Age: Eoin is looking for the combination of experience and physical health/ endurance. This is a world with limited medical care and people lose their physical prowess fairly quickly, bearing the negative effects of an advanced age and many sicknesses. For the purpose of this game: no human character who is not gifted in magic should be younger than 25 years and older than 40. Please note that elves are extremely long-lived in this world and can appear to be in their late twenties even if they are centuries old. The same goes to a lesser extent for mages (even in case of humans) and for mutants. Mages and mutants can be around a 100 years old and still have the appearance as well as endurance of a young man. Elves would begin to show physical signs of aging when they are around 500 years old – in their case any age under that mark and over 25 years is alright for this game.
Sexuality: Your character should be homosexual, bisexual with a preference for men, or at the very least bi-curious. There won't be any playable heterosexual romantic/ sexual encounters in the game.

Hair Color:
Eye Color:
Race: An elf/ a human/ a mutant
Appearance: Describe his physique a bit. What weapons does he wield and what clothes does he wear? You can find some inspiration on Witcher Wiki. Especially the Gwent decks of cards can prove to be a valuable resource. There is a deck for every major in-game territory, so research shouldn't be difficult.
Personality: Summarize your character’s personality in a couple of words, then elaborate on the traits. How does his personality influence his behavior and interactions with others?
Likes: These are not sexual.
Dislikes: These are not sexual.
History: A general description of his past.
Class: Is he a warrior, a rogue, or a mage?
Attributes: This section will be regularly updated as your character gains levels of experience. Please refer to the Guide on Attributes, Skills, and Abilities when filling in the table below with initial values for your character.

QuoteI think I need to do a bit of research, but I'm interested.

Awesome. The link for Gwent cards leads to the Witcher Wiki which is the best place to research the world in which we will play.

Also, I'm happy to say we already have our first mage! The Mage face claim Option 1 is no longer available - it belongs now to Ciaran eap Draghain, our elven healer. The portrait below will be used for him:

I will be opening a thread for approved Character Sheets soon.

There is yet another mage in the making by another player. And we are momentarily understaffed in warriors.

If anybody has any questions, feel free to ask them here or to shoot me a PM. I'll be happy to answer asap.

Szandor

I would be really interested. Especially in the Mage Option 2. I've played The Witcher 3 too many times to count, but I'll research a little more to get more in depth if you want.

Welcome, Szandor. That's great that you're already familiar with the world in which the game will take place. When it comes to the background, the events of the 2nd Nilfgaardian-Nordling War are relevant to our story. Those aren't covered in the game, but here's a link to the world history: Timeline. The 2nd Nilfgaardian-Nordling War started in 1263 and ended 1268. You might want to take a look at the events in that period of time, but it's not necessary at this stage.

The Mage Option 2 is available - please send me a character sheet for him in a PM.

A thread for approved characters is up :)

If your character has already been approved, please post his character sheet there.

Waldham

Hello, FrancisWarlock
Congratulations for the presentation of our campaign.

QuoteThe system for attributes and skills will very much follow Dragon Age Origins (you don't need to be familiar with the video game – all will be explained). The chains for abilities will loosely follow Dragon Age and Witcher ability chains (some flexibility is expected: players can suggest other abilities for their character. So long as the general idea of leveling up is respected and a reasonable ability tree suggested, it will likely be acceptable for this game).

Will you use the Dragon Age RPG (paper) for your system ?

QuoteSpelling and grammar should show a solid command of English. Overall, the game is designed for players with advanced storytelling and writing skills.
I'm French and so the english isn't my native language.

QuoteA transgender character is welcome so long as he has completed a full transition (I would be willing to make an accommodation in the sense that the magic used in this world allows for such a transition without surgery – though the costs are likely prohibitive for characters of humble origins).

Can you explain a little more about the transgender character ? A female character became a male or an hermaphrodite character ?

For your portrait, is it possible to choose an other picture ?

FrancisWarlock

Hello Waldham,

QuoteWill you use the Dragon Age RPG (paper) for your system?
No, we won't. For attributes, skills, and abilities, we will use a combination of systems from Dragon Age and The Witcher video games. All needed resources are available online, on the respective wikipedias. When we reach the stage when we add the attributes, skills, and abilities to the character sheets, I'll explain the process in detail.

QuoteI'm French and so the english isn't my native language.
Players are expected to write with sophistication of a highly competent English speaker (skillfully, and with accuracy and effectiveness). While an occasional mistake is certainly acceptable, this isn't a game intended for players whose proficiency in English isn't at an exceptional level.

QuoteCan you explain a little more about the transgender character ? A female character became a male or an hermaphrodite character?
Such a character would have completely transitioned from a female to a male. He would be a man in all aspects - physical, mental, and emotional. There won't be playable hermaphrodite characters in this game.

QuoteFor your portrait, is it possible to choose an other picture ?
No, it isn't. A character's likeness is to be chosen from the presented options.

Nintentoast

Hey! Just thought I would drop a message to let you know I’m interested if you’re still recruiting!
"Plans are useless, however, planning is invaluable" -Dwight D. Eisenhower

"Lets see if I can put studying off for another day" -Me

FrancisWarlock

Hello Nintentoast, we are still recruiting. Which class are you considering?

FrancisWarlock

Welcome to the guide to Character Build and Growth as based on the combination of attributes, abilities, and skills.

Attributes affect what kind of armor and weapons the character can use and also which abilities he can unlock. Abilities give access to special attacks, actions and permanent bonuses for warriors and rogues, as well as to spells and permanent bonuses for mages. Skill points govern the character's proficiency in several non-combat areas.

Each PC character starts on Level 1. Regardless race and class, he initially gets 5 Attribute points to distribute amongst his attributes, 3 Ability points and 1 Skill point to spend before we start the game. Upon gaining a new level in the game, a character always gets 3 Attribute points and 1 Ability point. It takes two levels to gain 1 Skill point.

The table below lists attributes and their initial levels per class.

Attribute|Warrior|Mage|Rogue
Strength|15|11|11
Dexterity|14|11|15
Willpower|10|14|12
Magic|11|16|11
Cunning|11|12|15
Constitution|13|10|10

In the following sections, you will find information about each attribute and its influence during the game. Your attribute score determines an attribute modifier that is added to any attack, check, or defense based on that attribute.

Attribute Score|Attribute Modifier
10-11|+0
12-13|+1
14-15|+2
16-17|+3
18-19|+4
20-21|+5
22-23|+6
24-25|+7
and so on|and so on

Strength

High strength is essential for warriors, and is nearly as critical for rogues. However, if you take the Lethality ability for a rogue, the strength modifier on weapons will be affected by cunning instead.

Strength increases the base damage from all melee weapons except mages' staves, and determines whether a melee attack is successful. Great strength is required to wield two-handed weapons or wear heavy armor. Strength also contributes to a character's Fortitude (if the Strength modifier is higher than Constitution modifier) and influences the intimidation side of the Persuasion skill.

Dexterity

Dexterity is the measure of agility, reflexes, and balance. Higher dexterity improves a character's chances to hit, makes the character more likely to dodge incoming attacks, and contributes to the damage dealt by ranged weapons (bows/ crossbows). Archery and dual-weapon fighting styles demand high dexterity to master, making this attribute a favorite for rogues.

As the primary component of a character's Reflex defense score, dexterity helps sidestep certain types of attack entirely. For ranged weapons, dexterity is the only attribute that contributes to the attack score. Dexterity is also a prerequisite for some weapon abilities.

Willpower

Willpower represents a character's determination and mental fortitude. Willpower affects the size of the pool of mana or stamina that a character can draw from to power abilities. It can contribute to a character's Will defense (against effects that daze, disorient, confuse or otherwise affect the mind), provided that its modifier is higher than the modifier of Cunning (otherwise the modifier of Cunning is used instead).

Each point of Willpower above the class base value raises the total Mana/Stamina level by 5.

Magic

Magic is the measure of a character's natural affinity for the arcane. This attribute is crucial for mages, since it directly increases a character's spellpower score, which determines the potency of all spells. A high magic score is required to wield high-level staves and to learn the most powerful spells. The magic attribute also determines how effective potions, poultices, and salves are for all classes. Magic also contributes to Reflex defense (if its modifier is higher than the one for Dexterity. Otherwise Dexterity modifier is used instead).

Each point of Magic above the class base value raises spellpower by 1.

Cunning

Cunning determines how well a character learns and reasons. Some skills require a certain level of cunning. Rogues benefit most from this statistic, as many of their class abilities rely on subtlety or reading the target, not on raw strength. Cunning contributes to the skill of Persuasion, and can also raise the Will defense (if its modifier is higher than the one of Willpower. Otherwise Willpower is used instead).

Constitution

Constitution represents health and resilience. Higher constitution directly increases the amount of damage a character can take before falling on the battlefield. Constitution can contribute to the Fortitude defense, provided that its modifier is higher than the one of Strength (otherwise the Strength modifier is applied instead).

Each point of Constitution above the class base value increases health by 5.

To decide on the best investment of Attribute points, you should also consider the requirements for unlocking more advanced abilities in the respective ability trees.
For mages, the abilities are represented by Spells. Follow the link to their core list. If you click on the name of a magic school (for example: Primal), you will open a page where you will see all requirements for its spells. Spells are organized in chains per four related spells (the easiest one is on the left end, the most demanding and powerful one is on the right end of each chain). To access the more advanced spells within any chain, a mage must have unlocked the easier ones first (for example: it's not possible to master Fireball spell without knowing Flame Blast and Flaming Weapons spells).
Specialization chains of spells will first become available on Level 7 when you will be able to select your first specialization (another one can be added on level 14).

For warriors and rogues, the abilities are categorized here (the source calls them, perhaps confusingly, talents. Please note that both classes share Weapon talents). If you click on any heading (for example Weapon and Shield), you will open a page that specifies requirements for each ability within the tree. Abilities are organized in chains per four related ones (the easiest one is on the left end, the most demanding and powerful one is on the right end of each chain). To access the more advanced abilities within any chain, a warrior/rogue must have unlocked the easier ones first (for example: it's not possible to master Overpower move without having learned Shield Bash and Shield Pummel).
Specialization chains will first become available on Level 7 when you will be able to select your first specialization (another one can be added on level 14).

Learning a spell or mastering an ability costs one ability point.

Lastly, you will be able to invest your Skill points in Skills. In our game, we will rename Coercion as Persuasion. While this skill won't have an impact on the interactions within the group of PCs, it will have a considerable impact on each PC's interactions with NPCs. We won't make use of Combat Tactics, and will lower the requirements for Runecrafting, Vitality, and Clarity to match those of Trap-Making. Those are the only changes compared to the list of skills and their requirements as presented on the wiki.

If you have any questions, let me know. I'll be happy to answer and offer help as needed. If your character is already approved, please assign the 5 Attribute points, 3 Ability points and 1 Skill point as you see fit for him and run a summary by me - just to make sure that the system has been understood.

Apart from attributes, abilities, and skills, each character will enter the game with a certain amount of Health (hit points), Stamina (applicable for rogues and warriors) and Mana (applicable for mages). These values and their improvement are governed by the character class. Players will primarily be concerned with Health and Mana/Stamina. If your character runs out of mana/stamina, he will still be able to attack the enemy and defend himself, but won't be able to use abilities/ spells. Health, Stamina, and Mana will naturally regenerate over time and there are spells which improve the regeneration rate. Stamina and Mana regenerate at the rate of 4.5 points per combat round (at the end of each round). This represents a character reaching into his deep reserves. Outside of combat, mana and stamina can be replenished through spells, mana/stamina potions, or through a long rest (which restores the pool to its current maximum). Health doesn't naturally regenerate during combat. A character can be healed by a healing spell or a healing potion during a combat encounter. Outside of combat, healing poultices and balms can be applied as well. The natural rate of health regeneration (without any healing aid) is 5 points a day (the points are added to the pool at the end of a long rest).

Summary of values per class:
Warriors: 100 Starting Health, 100 Starting Stamina, 6 points of Health gained per Level, 5 points of Stamina gained per Level.
Mages: 85 Starting Health, 115 Starting Mana, 4 points of Health gained per Level, 6 points of Mana gained per Level.
Rogues: 90 Starting Health, 90 Starting Stamina, 5 points of Health gained per Level, 4 points of Stamina gained per Level.

Awesome! And I'm glad that you didn't find it hard to work with attributes, abilities, and skills. It looks a bit daunting at first, but once a person actually delves in and does it for their character, it's not difficult. Leveling up is fun, and can become pretty addictive :)

Our game has taken off and is in progress now. There's still room for up to three players to join us. I'd particularly like to see Warrior Option 1 and Mage Option 1 being taken up.

I'll do everything I can to help a newcomer get up to speed fast. A willingness to read the posts written so far is a must (there aren't too many of them yet, and since we write one tale together, getting a good understanding of the story from its beginning is necessary).

Edits in the core posts of the recruitment thread compared to its first version:
1) The Gallery of Character Likenesses is updated - only including options still available
2) Important links are added in the respective sections
3) The final CS template is included
4) The Guide to Attributes, Skills, and Abilities is updated (fully streamlined, making use of the Dragon Age Origins system only. References to other games have been removed)

If you're interested to join our game, you can either reply here or send me a PM.

There also is one character ready for adoption: Eirian aep Arbraenn. Minor changes in his CS would be acceptable. His original writer has pulled out, so - as GM - I'm writing Eirian's part in the current scene. His background promises great opportunities for future development and for his personal story arch. In the hands of a capable writer, he will shine. I'd be happy to find a writer who would delight in the opportunity to take over this charming rogue and write for him.

Edit: Mage Option 1 has been taken and is no longer available. At the moment, I'm particularly looking for one player to adopt Eirian and another one to take up Warrior Option 1.

There's still room for 2 players to join our game.

Warrior Option 1 and Mage Option 2 have both been taken, and are no longer available.

At this point, I'm particularly looking for a player to adopt Eirian aep Arbraenn - please see the post just above this one for details.

Last two spots available.

Our game has been going on for almost five months now. We're just about to enter a new stage in our story, and this is the last call and opportunity for new characters to jump in and play with us.

My second current recruitment priority is Warrior Option 1.

Last spot available

Our game has been going on for 10 months now, so I won't be accepting applications for completely new characters anymore. But we still have a spot for a player willing to adopt Eirian aep Arbraenn whose original writer left the game (after only two posts for this character, so continuity or writing voice shouldn't really be an issue here).
Personally, I'm fond of Eirian, which is why I'd love to see him partake in our adventures.

If you'd like to take over this assassin with a heart of gold and penchant for flirting, let me know either here or drop me a PM. Minor changes in his CS are acceptable.

I'm still looking for a writer to adopt Eirian. For details, see the post just above.
