Is there any distinction between, say, a child whose parents are both from noble houses, and a child with one parent from a noble house and one "commoner" parent?

Dormouse

I like your approach to elven lines of succession and relationships. Consider me very interested! I'll be applying to play Jhessail Tol Galen, the eldest daughter. I see her as being rebellious and mischievous in her youth. It wasn't until later that she understood the responsibility of being the eldest child of an eldest child, and began to take her duties as a royal princess more seriously. I'm thinking she would be inclined to use magic, a sorcerer, wizard, or cleric. She is devoted to both the King and Queen and to her parents, and while she is torn between her duty to her people and her love and concern for her father, she intends to follow the investigation no matter where it leads. Even if it means bringing her own father to justice.

Maybe an Oracle of Wood? That feels 'elven', though none of the Wood revelations prior to 11th level are going to be useful for this sort of game. A Battle Oracle archer would be interesting, but again, not a whole lot of non-combat ability inherent in the mystery. I suppose Lore would be the best choice - Automatic Writing and Brain Drain are both useful information-gathering tools.

Chulanowa

Ancestor, Battle, Life, Lore, Nature, Occult, Time, and Wood seem the "elfiest" Mysteries; I could see a case for pretty much any of them though - Hell, maybe you're actually cursed by Lolth, with the Dark Tapestry or Bones Mystery. You can be all
neutral Good edgy emo elf.
>:)

If you're going Oracle, i'll scrap my Shaman idea; It's a little out of flavor for what NA is aiming for anyway. No worries, as always I have a metric shit-ton of character ideas competing for space!

Well... Two or so. I'm aiming for an archer-sort. Whether she's going to end up a cleric or some sort of "harder" martial class like Ranger or Fighter, I don't know yet. I'm strongly considering having her be the Noble Formerly Known As Prince's younger daughter, though.

indarkestknight

A Spirit Guide Oracle gives you some of a Shaman's flexibility, trading in a few of your revelations for the ability to pick what's basically a "secondary" mystery that can change daily when you refresh your spells. That said, if you pick up Spirit Guide, you can't take the Ancient Lorekeeper archetype, the elf-specific oracle archetype.

TheGlyphstone

Actually, I really like that Ancient Lorekeeper archetype - I think I'll pair that against a Lore Oracle. Not sure how to get a connection to the royal family though, I'll have to think on that.

I'd think a lore oracle would be perfect as a soothsayer to the royal family. At 5th level, being able to use Divination every day seems quite powerful. You might even have told the king something along the lines of, beware the Ides of March, advice that he sadly ignored. ;)

Well the child would have noble blood of course, but the status of the non noble parent wouldn't really change unless there is marriage. Eleven society is pretty communal though, with everyone contributing, and nobles take their positions pretty seriously, governing their people is an important task.

Hiya, I have a few questions.

  • How do you feel about third-party content? I really like playing around with Path of War classes, on the PFSRD
  • What tone are you going for with this campaign, and how much sexuality will be involved?
  • Which section of the game boards will this fall under? (Light/NC/Extreme/etc)

Good questions.

I haven't used any third party content at all. To be honest, I haven't perused any of it. I am willing to look at it, but if it doesn't feel right for the game, I'm likely to not accept it.

It's a traditional Forgotten Realms Campaign first, good guys looking for bad guys story, with investigation, combat, travel, adventuring etc. Sex will happen when it fits, or when pcs decide to get involved, but it's far from the main focus.

I'm not a big fan of NC/Extreme, so It's probably light. There are no elements of my story outline/plot that involve NC/Extreme if that answers better.

Hope that helps. I'm a firm believer in story first, with smut involved where appropriate, not a smut first type of game, if that makes sense.

I think that I'd like to submit something for Morwenna.  I kind of like the idea of playing one of the parents of the princesses.  It sounds like it might be fun, a challenge but fun.

I'm thinking an Unchained Monk as a class.  I haven't played one yet and I'd like to give it a try.

Concept is settling down a bit. Looking right now like the personal soothsayer of the royal family, a Moon Elf Spirit Guide Oracle with a clubfoot. Hopefully I'll be able to free up a few skill points for Ride, I see him as having a horse/pony so he's not limited in outdoor movement.

Or maybe instead of just a soothsayer, he's the family tutor? Lore Oracle would be very good at that.

Chulanowa

Name: Siannadorel Tol Galen
Race: Copper Elf (Technically half-Moon/half-Copper)
Class: Undecided (Ranger or Cleric)
Deity: Lurue
Royal Relation: Younger daughter of Prince Arion Tol Galen

First Draft background

Siannadorel Tol Galen has always seen herself as fortunate; she was the daughter of a crown prince, but not the eldest daughter, and thus not the heir. All of the privilege, but none of the responsibility! Always an impish, flighty child, she was the bane of the household's servants, and the delight of foreign dignitaries (who didn't have to endure her hyperactivity all day, everyday.) Still, by some means, Prince Arion managed to instill some decorum and etiquette into his daughter before she got old enough to truly embarrass everyone at court.
The downside of being a princess with no crown, is also having no direction. Oh, Siannadorel did not envy her sister in the least! But still, it must be nice to wake up in the morning, and actually have a plan for the day. or so Sianna thought, until she actually tried it, and found that having a schedule in a royal court just meant everything on the schedule would get broken, delayed, or changed at the last minute! The life of a courtier was no good. her mother encouraged her daughter to study the arcane arts, and for a time, Sianna did just that. But... well. The rote memorization, the arcane diagrams, the theories and the long exercises were even worse than a scheduled day! Especially because of what happened if you messed up a spell (which Sianna had awful luck with, truthfully.)
it was several years ago that she left home. it was the subject of much angst with her mother and father, who didn't want their 'delicate little squirrel" to go out into the harsh world and risk herself. Pfeh! Who learned anything without danger? In the company of a trio of other elves, Sianna kicked up her heels and trotted away into what she was sure was a life of adventure. She got what she asked for - far more than what she asked for. She doesn't say what she came across in her time adventuring, but she came back to the Cloakwood with two fewer companions, masterful skill with a bow, and the holy symbol of Lurue around her neck.
Though a very different girl than remembered around court, Siannadorel is still a somewhat flighty, impulsive thing who doesn't believe in half-measures. Her dedication to a deity only very loosely aligned with the Seldarine has caused some scandal, but none can argue that she doesn't wear it well. She has not taken her fathers' exile very well, and the death of her grandfather has only made it worse - especially since her father is obviously being framed!

If what you want is to smite, the warpriest archetype champion of the faith will let you Smite Evil. Another alternative is to play a cavalier sworn to the defense of Cloakwood.

Jhessail Tol Galen

Moon Elf, CG (tending towards NG), Specialist Wizard (Transfiguration or Enchantment or Illusion, still undecided)

Eldest daughter of Prince Arion Tol Galen; daughter of Morwenna Churnst

Jhessail Tol Galen is all too aware of the burden of leadership. Royal princess, eldest child of an eldest child, second in line to the throne; at times, her life has felt like one long lecture about duty and responsibility. From the earliest age she was tutored in magic and the arts of ruling. Fearful of failing to meet her family's expectations, she applied herself dutifully to her lessons. Still, there were times when she would gaze out her window and imagine the world beyond her forested prison, and she envied the carefree ways of her half-sister.

Time marched on, and so did her lessons. Jhessail grew into the role her family desired for her. Courtier, wizard, diplomat, strategist - a leader poised to ascend to the throne. While her half-sister ran off and had exciting adventures, she remained at the palace, devoting herself to her studies and to her people.

And then her father was disowned.

In Jhessail's eyes, he could not be guilty. What could he have done that was so heinous that they could not even tell her, his own daughter? She became her father's advocate at court and worked tirelessly to learn the truth. Each day, she sent petitions to the king and queen. Each day, she stood in silent protest outside the throne room. Each day, she reserved a contemptuous glance for the king, the queen, and the crown princess. Jhessail became frustrated and bitter. She was no longer in direct line to the throne, no longer likely to rule. Why then had she studied so hard, sacrificed so much?

When the king died at the hands of an assassin, she regretted what she had done. Her actions had only hurt those she loved. Had her grandfather not taught her that a ruler must make difficult, heart wrenching decisions, then live to regret them? Blinded by her loyalty to her father, she had denounced her family. And she had let her grandfather die, believing he had lost her love.

Devastated, she joined her family in mourning as she sought some way to apologize and to redeem herself.

In contrast to her half-sister, Jhessail is cool, reserved, and cultured - the very picture of a courtier. She knows how to say one thing and mean another, how to smile graciously to hide her true emotions, how to look a person in the eye and see everything while revealing nothing.

Yes you can but don't get into the crunchy bits just yet. We will get into that once the pcs have been selected.

Tamhansen

Elagolor Tan Learil
Moon Elf, CG Rogue (unchained knife master)

Elagolor is a servant of the queen, at least it seems he is now. He used to work for the late king, who called upon him when things needed to be handled quietly. Elagolor is not really an assassin, but sometimes the only solution to a problem was to make someone dissappear. To this end Elagolor was trained in the arts of stealth and combat. He even received some basic training in the use of nature's bounty to dispose of those that would oppose the king.

E;lagolor was on a mission when the king was assassinated, and returned to find the royal household in turmoil. He was summoned by the queen, who tasked him to assist her granddaughters in finding out who is responsible.

Yeah, I don't need specific crunchy bits, but just having it available makes the concept stronger with extra Knowledges available.

Name: Aeven N'Laeve
Race: Moon Elf
Class: Oracle
Deity: Labelas Enoreth
Royal Relation: Tutor to the Royal Family

Background: Aeven was born a great many years ago, in a now-forgotten city of the elves once called Starglade. A scion of its nobility, he was lucky - or unlucky - enough to have been away from the city when it was overrun and slaughtered by demons in the wake of a reckless magical experiment. Returning to find his people and city wiped from the face of the world, he forsook his birth-name and became a nomad. His legacy pursued him, though, in the form of the confused and angry spirit-echoes of Starglade's citizens, imprinted with the trauma of their terrible deaths and blaming the sole survivor of their ruling family for failing them.

Over the course of his journeys, he saw much and learned more, but it was not until he came upon Cloakwood that he found a modium of peace. The old King Tol Galen saw the bright spirit and keen mind in the wandering scholar, offering him a place in the royal household where too many others would have driven him away to spare themselves from whatever curse he bore. In exchange for that kindness, he became one of the Tol Galen family's most devoted loyalists, settling in as the chief tutor and educator first for Gabilgathal's children and their own children in turn. The exile of Arion broke his heart, and the death of Gabilgathal nearly destroyed him. Only Yvonnah's personal request to investigate and learn the truth behind the death kept him entirely from despair.

Personality: Despite the constant hassle of the poltergeists that accompany him everywhere he goes, Aeven is a remarkably cheerful and upbeat soul, having thrived in the years since he settled in Cloakwood. His mind is as keen as his luck is bad, a prodigious scholar and voracious consumer of knowledge with a knack for passing on that same knowledge to his pupils in memorable fashions.

Good luck on picking. I always hate that bit when I GM.

Thanks, and it's my least favorite part as well. I should have decisions posted by Monday morning. I've got a lot going on with the minions this weekend.

Melf Van Ymir
Moon Elven Magus (Bladebound)

In most human lands, a child born of a noble and a servant would have been treated as something shameful, a bastard to be kept secret. Among the elves of Cloakwood, however, Melf was treated (at least by most of the noble side of his family) as one of wholly noble get. If some well-meaning family members were patronizing, and if some less generous souls treated him with veiled condescension, that only pushed him to work harder, to hold himself to the highest standards, that he would not blemish the name of House Van Ymir. But while he always had one eye on the intrigues of the noble houses, he had an affinity for those of common blood that his noble peers did not, always treating common elves with the same respect as nobility, always respecting their time as being as valuable as a noble's.

Throughout his adolescence, many tried to awaken the dormant moonblade of House Van Ymir, without success. Melf did not presume to attempt to lay claim to the blade, nor did anyone, even his mother, think to encourage him to try, though he had grown skilled with spell and sword alike, acquitting himself admirably in tests of skill at tourneys between the most promising men and women of his generation. After all, even his mother was many places removed from succeeding as head of House Van Ymir.

However, not long after his mother became betrothed to an ambassador from Evereska, a drow raid struck Cloakwood, and the elven maiden who was to become Melf's stepsister was taken by drow slavers. Spurred by her capture, Melf sought to claim the dormant moonblade, though he knew that in doing so, his very life would be imperiled. Melf bared his heart, and the moonblade found in him what those who had failed to claim the moonblade lacked. He sought the moonblade not for status or prestige; he did not want power for power's sake, but sought it selflessly, risking his life so that he could rescue an innocent in danger. Judged worthy, Melf pushed hard to catch up to the drow raiding party, finding his stepmother-to-be already mounting a one-woman rescue. Guided by the wisdom and experience that resided within the moonblade, he was able to turn the tide against the drow long enough for all three to make their escape together.

Melf Van Ymir was called to serve as part of her investigative team for two reasons. First, one of the Queen's boon companions was the last wielder of House Van Ymir's moonblade. The two were as close as sisters in life, and the Queen knew that Melf was held to the high standards her old friend set judged as a worthy inheritor of her legacy. Second, Melf's ties to House Tol Galen were minimal, lending some credible impartiality to the investigative team's findings.

Here is a quick write up for Morwenna.  My apologies if it seems brief.

Name: Morwenna
Race: Elf
Class: Unchained monk

Background:

Morwenna has always been rather introspective.  As a child, she was disinterested in the study of magic, preferring to spend her time bettering herself in other ways.  Others did not understand why she felt the way that she did, but their taunts fell to the wayside when she had managed to jump just a little higher than she could before or enjoy the quiet of a summer meadow.

After observing a demonstration put on by a troupe of monks, Morwenna became fascinated with them to the point of obsessive.  She wanted to do what they were doing.  Years of study followed as she completely absorbed herself in her training but found the monastic lifestyle to be too spartan and drab.  Eventually the plain walls of the monastery felt too restrictive and she left to continue her training in other worldly ways.

Her path lead her into service protecting the Royal family.  Morwenna did not need to wear armor nor carry a weapon and that made her stand out amongst her more well armed peers.  Eventually she was assigned to protect Prince Arion and she found the man intriguing.  Her interest was recipicated and Morwenna fell in love with Arion.

Morwenna was dismayed to hear of the Princes exile and disappearance and volunteered to search for him.

Personality:
Morwenna passions are not immediately evident to those that do not know her.  While she tends to be introspective, Morwenna is very personable and free with her affections.  She actually shares many traits with Arion, being adventurous and free spirited, though she is more devoted to her duties and less reckless than he is.  She hoped to instill a sense of duty and honor into her daughter but may have only been moderately successful.  Morwenna does not Barbour any jealousies towards Arion other wife and has some feelings for her as well.

Arions disappearance has started to strain her sense of duty.  She still considers him part of her responsibility even though he is no longer 'officially' part of the Royal family.
