He'd tied her down, threatened her life, and maybe would have even killed her, if the police hadn't stopped him. She couldn't leave him alone though, she wanted to save him from himself. He was emotionally disturbed. She had been his friend since they were in diapers together.

Or perhaps she goes back to him because she likes the pain.

This could be romantic, or just dark.
