The research that lead to the gate to other universes was ridiculed as an obvious hoax at first – it was obviously something out of cheap science fiction after all – right up until the first independent observers were taken through the shimmering portal and into another world. The portal and all the research associated with it were taken into government custody immediately, and there were months of international conferences and debates (with far more animated and conspiratorial discussions in the media and online) before anyone would be permitted to use it. The sort of power and opportunities the portal opened up were far too much for any one person, company, or even country to hold and use.

Now though the gate (and all interdimensional travel) falls under the jurisdiction of The International Bureau of Interdimensional Affairs, an organisation with representatives from every UN member state and dozens of companies managing all use of the gate and ensuring that nobody on Earth develops independent gateways. Outside of a limited number of research projects, and a small number of mining/drilling/logging operations (strictly limited to worlds without animal life and believed to have no potential to develop animal life) there are a number of cultural exchange programs for students and academics.

In this story your character would be one of the students/academics on a year long placement in an alternate Earth. There were a whole stack of forms YC had to sign once they had accepted your application; agreeing to this, certifying that, waiving the other – but YC was just thrilled to be one of only a handful of applicants from the whole planet to get a chance to visit another world!

When she arrives she and the other women in her group are welcomed like visiting royalty, it's a little overwhelming, but the fancy clothes and the parties are like something out of a fantasy – they're so much fun that it's almost enough to cover up the strange looks some of the men at the parties are giving them, and how … odd this alternate society is.

The main change I was thinking of for the purposes of this story is that in the world YC visits about 10% of the population (roughly equal ratio of men to women) develop extreme and over-emphasised sexual dimorphism; to the point where it looks like Boris Vallejo started drawing hentai. This group would most likely set itself up as the aristocracy pretty quickly, and would hold onto power with both hands. YC would find herself succumbing to the effect of whatever it is in this world that's responsible for the changes in the upper tier of their society; and slowly come to realise that she has been set up as part of a trade deal with this alternate world.

We could work out whether we'd like to set this alternate world in a version of a particular part of the past, or the future; and I'm happy to talk through ideas for alternate worlds to either set the story in – or to have our characters move on to as the story progresses.
