I happened to watch this movie, Snakes On A Plane, last night...

Oh dear. Can anyone explain to me what was the point of that movie? Having heard about the premise, I assumed that it was going to be comedy... But it wasn't. It was, apparently, shot as a completely serious thriller. A completely serious thrilled about *snakes attacking people on a passenger plane*.

What were the director and the screen writer thinking? Why did good actors like Samuel L. Jackson and Julianna Marguiles agree to play in it? And are there any people that actually liked this movie..?

Meanwhile, the people that made Snakes On A Plane seemed to be thinking that you could make a decent movie out of a premise like that...  ::)

Oh yeah, The Asylum film studio knows their movies are low-budget and aren't afraid to admit it. They are currently being restrained from releasing their Age of the Hobbits film from being released. It's the first time a major studio has actually managed to halt their production.

Yeah, but you see: movies like that are so bad that even their makers don't treat them seriously. They have zero budget, no-name actors, lame effects... That's what makes them endearing.

Snakes On A Plane is one such movie too... but it has *good* budget, *good* actors and *good* effects. It's as if the people in charge actually thought that a movie about snakes on a plane could actually work.

*That* is what's odd about SOAP. It's as if somebody managed to get Spielberg direct Sharktopus and gave it a world-wide promotion as a summer blockbuster...

If I remember right, the trailers for Snakes On A Plane came out far enough in advance that the Internet latched onto the idea that Samuel L. Jackson should say 'Mother-f---ing snakes on a mother-f---king plane!' so hard that Jackson actually put the line in when they filmed that part.  It wasn't part of the original script.

And I think that people went to see it because it was such a crap concept, and Jackson et al. were essentially 'slumming'.

The movie was horrible, but I was one of those people that watched it (on dvd) just because no one says "Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherf---ing snakes on this motherf---ing plane!" quite like Samuel L. Jackson does.

Sucky movies can indeed be entertaining. Now, the Pirahna movies are as sucky and entertaining as Snakes on A Plane and if not, even more so IMO.

I love the Piranha movies. I figured I'd hate the remakes but nope, they actually managed to surpass the originals in many ways.


Snakes on a Plane suffers a little from having it's origins as a serious movie but I think they did enough work to salvage it and turn it into a perfectly serviceable crazy film. It's no Two-Headed Shark Attack though.

Because it paid well.  That's pretty much what it boils down to.  They director came at them with a script, saying they should do it and threw money at them, and they said 'Sure'.

How else do you think they'll feed themselves or their families?  If they didn't someone else would have gotten the work, and they'd be out of a paycheck.  This is what actors do.  And the best they can do is take a bad script and story and try to make it watchable.  It doesn't always work.

Really? Personally, I found this movie to be totally not-enough-crazy. It's like they really tried to make a serious movie there.

Yeah. I can see Julianna Margulies doing this for money (although it was a genuine pain for me to watch this quite capable actress in this trainwreck), but Samuel L. Jackson? It's not like he has trouble finding work...

Why wouldn't they agree to play in it? They already have good reputations so it's not like they have to worry about their careers dying over it. Probably looked like fun.

Sorry for the double post, but I just stumbled across a movie that belongs on this list of 'Why did they make it?'  Unfortunately, I don't recognize any of the actors, but that's not terribly surprising.

Regarding SOAP, one of my many favorite Community lines is when Abed says "I've got a real Snakes on a Plane brewing here..." when he's trying to make his movie during one the episodes, referring to a movie that thinks it's funny and cool but really isn't.

This was a movie that got some internet buzz from one line and rode it into the ground, the ground in this case being box office poison. The general buzz when it came out was "Oh Snakes on a plane? That's the movie where Samuel L Jackson says he is tired of the snakes on the plane? I've seen that clip, why would I pay to watch that get padded out to 90 minutes?" Or, "No I haven't seen the clip and I don't care to. The whole thing sounds dumb."

Meanwhile, in the heads of executives "We're getting hits on the internet! We'll be billionaires!!!! Make it more internety!!! Do whatever reddit says!!!"

And thus, one of the not-even-in-a-funny-way-dumbest movies ever made.

Heh, their War of the Worlds and American Warship were not that bad in fact I liked the Battleship knock-off better for plot realism the aliens tried to make China and the US nuke each other using stealth vessels and well needed a radioactive world to live one. And the actors tried harder they at least seem to get the joke.
