I'm probably in full agreement with you, but I don't recognize the RTTT abbreviation?

Best guess from Google-Fu is Race To The Top.

Got it - the 'incentive' for teachers to do everything humanly possible to make sure the students pass the one test that 'counts' towards their effectiveness rating, resulting in an inability to deviate at all from the designated curriculum, regardless of the students' interests and abilities.

Yeah, not fond of that either.  Ran headlong into it in sixth grade with the little Oni.

Got it in one.

The school I teach at (FIRST PERMANENT JOB, HOORAY!) has a new schedule.  Last year, they had 6 45-minute periods, with the remained of the 6.5 hours being taken up with lunch and passing periods.  The schedule for this year has changed to 4 85-minute blocks.  The 4 blocks are, in some order: English, Math, Social Studies/Science, Special (Art or Spanish or Gym, etc).

(As note, this is a middle school.)

So, the kids get to see their English and Math teachers every day...but I only get to see them every other day.  Which means I usually have to spend at least a few minutes of class reminding the kids what we learned the other day, in addition to getting only half the school year to teach them roughly the same amount of stuff.  Why, then, do English and Math get to see their kids every day?  "Well, that's what they're going to be tested on..."  Is the usual comment.

Now, testing for English and math is nothing new.  What is new in the last few years is the bonus money that schools get for doing well on those tests...or the government oversight on running the school if they do poorly.

Oniya

Reiji, you have all my sympathies.  The way that middle school treats both teachers and students royally sucks.

I have to ask: Does anyone really take Donald Trump seriously? His track record of disasters has to be a red light and the fact that he's trying to hit on every major topic by siding with the most controversial in an obvious and rather sad grab for attention. I get that he's a national pass-time like reality television and Wrestling, but in the end, will anyone actually vote for him?

yes, but mostly he's the rebirth of the anti-immigrant Know Nothings of the 1800's with a populist vibe, he's dropping in polls as we speak. He's siphoning off the republican nutcases though. Might make way for one of the few moderate canadates that wouldn't pass the Tea Party Loyalty Tests.

Never underestimate the power of the 'protest vote', the people who don't give a flying sh** what a candidate or party stands for, as long as it is not"business as usual". They might not even believe that the 'protest candidate' can win, but if there are enough people who believe "not many people will vote for him anyway, so what harm can it do if I vote this way?" things could get tricky.

Also don't forget that primaries are not the same as the actual presidential race. Many a candidate has moderated his tone, once he nabbed his party's nomination. Primaries seem to be at least as much about just getting attention as they are about politics. It seems to be part of the game, and not just something special to Trump.

^ This.  Teachers have always been heroes in my book, but in this day and age, they are SUPER heroes to put up with what they put up with and still manage to make differences in kids' lives.

i will not make blanket statements about people one way or the other.  i have had a conversation with at least one person who takes him dead serious and thinks this country should be ran like a business, so trump is his man.  my reply to that was 'bankruptcy'.  heh.

So 3.0 apparently sent in a plant to hit The Donald.  Nice move.  I'll applaud that.

Course, in so doing, 3.0's given his opponents some fantastic openings.

His intern, the young lady grilling The Donald, said:  “I want to get paid the same as a man, and I think you understand that. So if you become president, will a woman make the same as a man and do I get to choose what I do with my body?”

So 3.0 supports Equal Pay and Pro Choice, right?

Hey, Tea Partiers.  You hear that?  Enjoy.

So I've watched most of the Democratic Party Debate on CNN.  Overall, I'd say Clinton is winning.  She seems the most prepared and have the most depth.  Sanders has more fire, but he keeps going back to a few points.  Chafee and O'Malley barely existed.  Webb complained about not getting enough time too much.

Best line of the night came from Sanders:  "Let me say something that may not be great politics, but I think the Secretary is right, and that is the American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails!"

https://youtu.be/zGjJ0CM1GuU

"Enough of the emails, let’s talk about the real issues facing America!"

Classic.

I have to disagree.  Both Hillary and Bernie did exceptionally well, but I still saw Hillary not answering the question she was asked, and instead answering a similar question she wished she'd been asked.  I think Sanders only fault was when they pretty much unified against him for being weak on gun control.  I don't view that as a bad thing, but I still think the two of them did equally well.  Seeing as all things that -could- have gone wrong for Hillary and didn't, I have to compliment her for being very quick with her tongue, and skilled in misdirection and explanation.

I wish she didn't rally the crowd against the Republicans so many times.  In a room full of democrats the only thing that serves is getting cheap applause.

Oniya

Every online voting-app poll that I saw had Sanders ahead by a landslide.  I think the lowest score I saw on him was a 74%.  And yet all the headlines are saying Hillary 'won'.  Sometimes even on the same site that has the poll up.

But apparently Sanders had the highest spike in Internet searches during the first half of the debate.  :D

Too bad Nixon didn't have Sanders around during Watergate "Tapes, who cares about missing tapes!  Don't you worry yourselves about anything your government does, laws don't apply to us"

Too bad Woodward and Bernstein no longer exist but then there never has been much interest in the major media when it comes to Democratic candidates.  Trump has more skeletons in his closet than a graveyard which I'm sure the media is just waiting to expose if he stumbles into the nomination.  Even he, however, doesn't compare to the Bill and Hillary sideshow.  She vehemently defended traditional marriage as one of her bedrock principles until it became politically expedient to change it.  Her personal war on her husband's alleged victims is fairly well known so I'm unclear how she is the champion for women's rights.  I believe she said herself in the debate that she defended Wall Street and everyone knows that is where the majority of her funds come from.  How can anyone believe she will stand for the poor when she will owe her entire election to the supposedly hated rich?

I realize it is easier to turn a blind eye when one thinks the ends justify the means.  It is just a few (thousand) emails.  Nevermind that, in worst case, the FBI could still bring criminal charges and, even in best case, she willfully hid and attempted to destroy information rightfully owned by the public, purposely foiling FOIA requests that again are the right of the citizenry.  Either that or she is admitting incompetence at her job which I think might be worse.  Her defense that other people did it too doesn't even work for a typical parent's 10 year old let alone the Secretary of State.  I believe trustworthiness should be something sought out in a President regardless of party affiliation.

I want to make clear that this is not an attempt to change anyone's mind to vote Republican.  Geb Bush would not receive my vote in a million years and I'm glad he seems to be falling out of the race.  The Trump is hopefully going to collapse at some point in the primaries so I don't have to choose whether to hold my nose at the ballot.  The few I do like in the Republican field certainly have flaws but one can't reach the point of running for President without some potential problems.  To me, it becomes a matter between the difference a wheelbarrow load and a semi truck.  Bernie Sanders, though I personally would not vote for him, is a vastly better candidate than Hillary.  I'd welcome an open debate between Sanders and a Republican who could articulate truly conservative ideas, Fiorina or Carson being my choices though I think Paul, Rubio, or Cruz would be interesting as well.  My biggest fear in this now is that America ends up with Trump vs Clinton and the entire country loses.  Both sides can do better and I'm afraid, if we don't, a second Civil War might be coming around the corner.

I think what sanders is pissed about how much people are going on about them. Hillary has a lot of flaws, "flip-floppery" and a lot of skeletons, but all these bloggers, media outlets, and so forth go on and on and ON about her freaking E-mails like they are some magical anti-Hillary spell.
The same way the Benghazi investigation committee has done nothing from day one but try to prove she was somehow responsible and involved... and yet they've never officially accused her of anything and dismissed military investigators for not focusing exclusively on her.
They just bang on about it on fox news whenever she comes up.

It glasses over all her actual flaws and both good and bad views or ideas and props her up as some straw man that republicans can throw rocks at.

or to put it in meme form for people who look at the pictures.

What are these emails, anyways, and why are they relevant (in theory) to anything? Anyone able to explain why it is such a big deal in the first place?

Oniya

Hilary used a private email address throughout her tenure instead of a government address.  She was supposed to turn over the server records upon leaving, but it took her two years to do so.

Since they were not stored on a secure government server, there is a theoretical possibility of unauthorized people reading those conversations, which could have contained sensitive information.

Whether it's deserving of all the hype it's been given - I dunno.

What did these 'possibly' leaked emails contain, nuclear launch codes? Descriptions of the aliens being stored in custody at Area 51? Transcripts of Obama's meetings with our secret Illuminati NWO overlords?

Government emails are like 90% of the content of Wikileaks, and no one makes any real noise about them most of the time. The only special thing about these particular emails were that they belonged to a Presidential candidate?

I think one contained a Latte order.

Another asked for the time for a broadcast TV show.

It's yuuuge stuff.

Pretty much, yeah.  And the Freedom Caucus is desperate not to have Hillary in the White House.  (Or any other Democrat, for that matter.)

Depends on how you look at it. I am just going by memory here, and my memory tends to be like Swiss cheese (full of holes), but as I recall it there is a rule that government business has to be done on government emails and servers. So she broke a government rule.

That's number one. Number two is that it makes retrieving information a lot harder. Say, someone wants/needs to figure out what emails HC sent during her time in office (for example as an answer to a Freedom of Information Act request). The informati0on what she sent to whom is not stored on any government server. Her answer to that was saying that all her office emails reached someone in the government and she assumed that the emails would be stored there, but to get that information you can't just search through her "sent items". You'd have to search the width and length of the whole darn government to check if someone has maybe received an email by Mrs. Clinton. Imagine trying to piece your bank records together by having to search the whole world for records of payments received by you, instead of just looking at the transfers you initiated.
