This is a request for other players for an already running game between me and Oberon, The Icarus Incident. We've reached a point in the tale where we're introducing new characters (one at a time), and would prefer these played by people other than ourselves.

You will be able to choose your character - to a point. They need to have a role that is required on the ship. Age, gender, personality, physical appearance, that's all up to you.

However, we ask that you either send me or Oberon a message, or ask us questions here first, before posting in our story thread.

Oooh, yes please.

I've been really enjoying reading this story and would love to take a part in this one.

The story has been moved to the "NC: Exotic-Freeform Small Groups" forum so we're ready to transition to a multi player game.

The crew of the Icarus tops out at about 7. The basic plot of the story is reminiscent of the movie Prometeus: an expedition is sent out to explore the remains of an ancient alien civilisation. Although the details of the plot are still open and all input is appreciated some elements have already been established:

- The icarus mission is mankind's first encounter with extra terrestial intelligent life.
- The mission was put together in a hurry, the Icarus originally designed as an unmanned probe.
- The crew is in a state of hibernation during the voyage.
- The crew is initially unaware of the true purpose of the mission. Some crew member still in stasis may know more however.
- When your character wakes up the ship is in a state of emergency, being infected by a strange phenomenon that is slowly transforming parts of the ship (see the existing story thread for details). Your first mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to save the ship.

Eventually the ship will reach the destination planet. There they will find what remains of the alien civilisation. The story can take different directions here. It could be a lifeless planet save for some ruins and dangerous artefacts. Or it could be a world teaming with life, perhaps primitive survivors of the alien race. This part is very much up for discussion.

Your character can be basically anything that makes sense as a member for this kind of expedition. There is already a ship's engineer (Grayson) and a commanding officer (Karen). But there is room for a medical officer, an archeologist, a botanist, science officer, etc etc...

If you are interested, please let us know!

Well, I'd be up for making a hot-shot pilot (late twenties, as many commendations for skill/bravery as he has dis-commendations for breaking the rules) or slightly-sinister scientist (mid-to-late thirties or early forties - either the views science almost as his religion and people are just sacrifices to wind up on its altar - or maybe the dedicated and focused man of science, out to discover the secrets awaiting the Icarus) for this!

Kiric Rand

Well, I'm thinking a chief medical officer. Nite, before I do, I was planning on making this ny first bisexual character attemps, so if this makes anyone uncomfortable please let me know.

Oberon

It seems we have 2 candidates for the medical officer position. Kiric, do you have any alternative character that you would consider playing?

We do need a science type crew member though to advance the plot. The sinister type would actually work quite well as he may know the hidden purpose of the mission (in good old Alien style).

I could always change characters. I could always play the science officer, or if that's taken I could always play the military bodyguard who prefers to shoot first and ask questions later

I was considering applying for the science officer, but I was also tempted by a pilot/navigator - so if you want to be the scientist, go ahead Kiric!

Melantha

It is a scientific expedition, so we do have space for more than one scientist. Conversely, a soldier would be an odd thing for a scientific expedition to contain, however, given the Martian wars/ other incursions that we've mentioned in the story, It's quite feasible that several crew members could have been involved in the war, and that one or two could have it as a hidden role, but no more than two, please. So  far, we've got:

Karen: captain/navigation (which is essentially a pilot in space)
Grayson: ship's engineer/mechanic
Katkwik: ship's doctor
Kiric Rand: scientist (choose field)
ebpohmr: scientist (choose field)
Caehlim: (unknown)

Alrighty then, sinister scientist it is! Kiric, do you have a preference for field? I prefer things like physics, astrophysics, quantum mechanics etc., but don't mind branching out into something new if that's what you had in mind?

Melantha

Remember what the fields needed are? They're visiting a planet, so physics/astrophysics etc are less than relevant for a scientific exploration mission. Something to do with what they'll find there.

A physics guys could make sense because they know they were going to explore an alien civilisation...or the remains thereof. So they would need someone to figure out their technology. He would be the one that knows the true purpose of the mission likely.

Well, I think biochemestry would be a good field.

Well it's fine with me. My character will probably be bisexual as well.

...

I'm thinking a planetologist. (To steal a term from Frank Herbert's Dune). They study a bit of astrophysics, geology, chemistry and biology focusing specifically on the development of planets and how life could form on them.

He's going along on the mission to assess how life-supporting the planet is and what the possibilities for terraforming or settlement would be.

Well, you've got a couple of scientists now and the kind of science I can comfortably run with doesn't seem to be needed here. I'll see if I can think up something else then! ;)

Would they have possibly included a combination psychologist/sociologist/anthropologist/linguist/xenologist? Someone who studies present and past humanity, communication and speculates on alien psychology/sociology.

Just so you realize, a fusion reactor will not explode or melt down. But it would provide more power than anything else (short of a matter/antimatter reaction) so damage to it would leave them utterly stranded. Which some would consider worse than a nice quick fatal explosion.
Building a fission reactor from scratch on an alien world would probably be easier than rebuilding a fusion reactor - unless they sent along replacement parts for every bit of it. But the fission reactor would probably not have the power to fuel the drive.

I suspect with "derbies" you mean "debris".

ebpohmr, what if you went more applied physics? Someone able to analyze and repair both the fusion reactor and hyperdrive as well as analyze (alien) devices to determine what they can do. Maybe even analyze strange new alloys and determine what they can do, how they do it and how to stop it. A biochemist can only do that if the process is sufficiently biological or chemical in nature. If it gets into unusual physcial properties a physicist is needed.
This is just an idea.

I would actually love if we did get someone playing a character with at least some of those skills.

As for the fusion reactor, *shrugs* that's just what we've set as typical for the technology of the time. Any repairs to it would fall under Grayson's area of expertise, just for the mechanical knowledge it entails.

We've had a few problems with Oberon's spell-checker changing that word several time. I just get over it.

A physics guy would suit the plot I had in mind perfectly actually. Preferable a slightly evil one.

Remember: the mission was put together in a hurry. Likely some evidence was obtained for the existence of this alien civilisation, maybe trough radio transmissions that were intercepted. They also seem to have figured out it was a dead civilisation by now. One of the goals of the governments (or corporations) financing this mission will be to recover the secrets of any advanced technology. That would need someone with specialised skills. A heavy physics background is almost mandatory in that case.

Also it has already been established in the story that all the crew members have a scientific background (Grayson states somewhere that he is the only one on board with not at least one PhD). So combinations of fields are certainly allowed as well.

Unless anyone objects I will continue the unofficial role of GM. If you want to do something that affects the general plot line (like introducing a strange green infection to the ship :-) ), please run it by me first.

Yep, thanks. I corrected it. My spell checker doesn't seem to like the word "debris", insists on changing it every time...

So, the number of people we have will be more than enough for now, and I will direct your attention to our OOC thread. I'm locking this thread for now, as we don't need to keep bumping it with posts that would be better suited to an OOC thread.
