The bright morning sun poured in through Emily's poorly drawn bedroom curtains, She ignored it of course pulling her blankets up tightly around her chin and turning away from the glow. Little did she know today was going to be a day like no other before. Stretching out her legs and wriggling her toes she takes in a deep yawn and searches in the sheets for her cellphone.

Meet me at library, 9am

She grumbled, it was 9am already and the library was a good 15 minute jog into the city. Climbing reluctantly out of bed she made a quick toilet stop and pulled on her favourite denim shorts and a clean pink shirt and gave herself a quick once over in the mirror as she finger brushed her long tangled chocolate brown mess that she called hair and rubbed her  green eyes awake. Once satisfied she pulled on her shoes and jogged down the stairs dialing her sisters cell.

Brrp brrrp brrrp brrp

No answer. It was odd. She must be mad as hell. Locking up the house quickly Emily took off to the library at a jog. The sun was hot and the air was cool it was the kind of weather she loved. Approaching the library she slowed to walk to catch her breath before bursting into the silent library, groups of people were crowded around the entrance which was common on the best of days but the mood felt somber, something wasn't right. She pulled her cell phone out and tried her sister again but still no answer.

"What is going on here?" she asked approaching one of the groups
"We don't know" one of the woman said "But there has been talk.."
"What kind of talk?" Emily asked
"Something about a virus...." the woman said
"I heard there was a murder..." said the man next to her "Whats this about a virus?"
Emily felt the blood drain from her face and her limbs went numb as the impending sense of doom settled in her stomach.

The mug of coffee was nice and warm in Rachel's hands. She was on her third cup this morning, but she knew she would need the caffeine for the day to come. It was her first day at a new job, and she was living in a new town.

Finally she was just where she wanted to be. The town was much smaller then New York, and she'd already taken a tour of Golden Meadows retirement home where she'd be starting work today at 10:00am. It was a nice, clean and small place. She even lived close enough that she could easily walk there.

After taking a look at her watch and seeing it was just a bit after 9am, she got up and went to the mirror to make sure her blond hair was neatly put up in a pony tail. The required brown scrubs for Golden Meadows were hideous, but she would deal with them so long as she didn't have to wake up before the sun anymore.

Her cell rang just as she was getting her purse. A smile tugged at her lips when she saw the caller ID say it was her mother. Rachel was sure that her mom was still mad that she had moved so far away. It was still nice of her to call.

“Hi mom. I'm just about to head to work. How are you?”

There was a brief silence on the other end, then her mother's voice came through. Rachel had never heard her mother speak in such a disjointed, confused sort of way as she said,

“Your father is here. He doesn't look so well.”

Rachel frowned. Perhaps she shouldn't have left her mother in New York. Rachel's father was dead. Her mother had never shown any sort of mental problems before.

“Mom, dad can't be-”

Her mother's scream was loud in her ear, and the following dead tone on the phone left her frightened not only about her mother's sanity, but about her being hurt.

Rachel redialed her mother's number, but neither her house phone or her cell were working. Everything was so silent. Her pacing back and forth had lead her to the front door, and she now noticed how quiet everything was outside. During the weekend, she'd been able to hear cars or children outside.

Rachel opened her door and looked out onto an empty street. There was no one there. No cars drove by, no people walked their dogs, no children played in the street.

“What the hell?”

It was 9:30a.m. now and altough David was at work just for one hour now he already wanted to go home. The whole day would only consist of preparing papers for his superiors, collecting data from the R&D laboratory and answering calls from other branches of Ingelman & Ingelman. It was a boring job in a boring little town but the payment was good enough to hold him here. Besides what else could he do?
He pinned one paper of results together before looking back at his computer, moving his glasses back up his nose. The phone was silient up until now and David had still some time before handing in the paper to his boss one floor above him, so he decided to surf around on the internet, reading interesting stuff about things he actually liked. First he would get himself a new coffe though, David thought and went to the little kitchen right on the other side of the floor. There was just one other person in the room who drank up his cup of coffee as David entered.

"Hey. If anyone tries to reach me via phone, could you tell them I'm back in about an hour? I have to bring back some books I borrowed from the library. You know the one on the other side of the town" his colleague said.
"Sure no problem. Was a rather quite day overall" David replied and filled up his cup. After getting back to his workplace, he started surfing. His favourite site he used had no new entries for dragons, so he moved on to the zombie board where some new theories were discussed.

He dashed quickly down the sidewalk at a reasonable pace as sweat began to form beads above his brows. He would speed up past the city park and head towards the center of town. The park was a well kept scene of nature as the trees would sway lightly from the morning breeze and birds could be seen ever so often making their rounds from tree to tree. As beautiful as the day was, it was off. Something was off as he passed by the park to see not a single soul out and about. He could remember numerous faces he would normally see on his jog that he just wasn't seeing today. He shrugged it off and kept on as things like this just happen and maybe everyone had decided to sleep in.

"Where is everyone? Hm." He muttered as he continued into the city.

As he entered the city there was a bit of life to be seen in the distance around the heart of the city. He adjusted his run route as to pass through to scan the city a bit and possibly scope out some women. His curiosity was fueled even more as it seemed there was a bit of commotion going on outside and there was a police officer barking orders at an individual. Seemingly, his orders were falling on deaf ears and he began to open fire on the man stopping him dead in his tracks. Tommy had curved his run route to avoid the scene and ended up passing by the library where there was a group of people standing on the steps leading in. He finally stopped his jogging to catch his breath as he approached the busy book haven. His heart was racing and his white tank top was soaked in sweat. He glanced down at his watch and back up to the library.

"What is going on? Why...are you all out here, it's freakin hot!" He paused outside for a moment as nobody answered him. Finally a voice from the crowd replied

"Something....happened" Said the concerned voice of a woman.  There was an obvious fear and uncertainty in her voice as she spoke.

"Oh? So why are you all still here? He paused "Then again I suppose it is human nature to be curious."

He thought to himself for a few moments, his thoughts were now racing as fast as his heart. "What is going on with today?! First that man that was gunned down and now this! Damn people are certainly at their best right now!". He decided to enter the library throwing the doors open and approaching the first water fountain he spotted in the lobby. If anyone were to gaze into his direction, they would see a medium sized white male with a 5-o-clock shadow and a shaven head. His tank top and windbreaker pants were sweaty and now covered with fountain water as he would scoop some water into his hands to dump over his body to cool off.

"The hell is going on today?" He exclaimed as the people had hushed conversations around him

A country melody came drifting out of the sqaud cars stereo as it bounced down a dirt road. Window was rolled down and out it was Jack's elbow. Window whipped around the cabin as the radio crackled. Far from the city among the pines he was alone in the country side. Tapping the roof as Johnny Cash serenaded him the police officer fixed his mirror on a even stretch of the road. Back here the roads were rather unpaved in fact most were gravel or dirt. Reaching across the console he punched up Google on his cars computer to show the route to the farm. It was unnecessary though as Jack had been down these roads a million times before. In fact he had grown up on the very farm he was heading to. An old ranch hand turned a man of the law Jack Wallace was happy with his life.

As the wheels enter a stretch of road with a dense field of pines on either side the song made him daydream. Through the canopy of the trees the sun flashed over his rather square angular jaw. Though his hazel eyes were shielded by the large brown cowboy hat he wore, a badge decorating the front. The uniform that clothed his rather bulky frame consisted of a dirt brown dress shirt, tan slacks with a tan tie and a gold six point star. The star had the departments Latin motto and symbol on it. Along his right pectoral muscle was a gold name name that said "Wallace". His black polished combat boots pushed the pedal to the floor causing the car to shoot forward. It broke out of the clump of forest like a bat out of hell. It bounced violently over the pot holes but that made Jack let out a nice yell of happiness.

In the distance the white picket fence of his family farm came into view. Next the two story colonial house sat majestically on the hill that dominated the surrounded pastures and fields. As he let off on the gas Jack took the time to take in a site that has eluded him for years. This was the first time in ten years that the man had been back to the farm. Of course this time it was due to a disturbance on the farm but nonetheless as a warm feeling over took his muscles Jack knew he was home at last.  Slowing to a crawl Jack stopped the sqaud car in front of the driveways gate. The metal barrier kept out loose livestock for years and numerous repairs good be seen. Popping the door open the police officer got out into the intense sun. Jack's massive six foot two height towered over his car. Bending down he unhooked the transmitter from the dash,

"Car 21 to HQ" Leaning on the roof he stared at his families house from under the brim of his hat.

"Go ahead Car 21." The static reply was crackled by the distance to the city.

"I have arrived at the scene of the call, no sign of the occupants. Going to investigate, please advise."

"You are cleared Officer Wallace, be careful. Out." Then nothing came from the speakers. Groaning Jack leaned back into the car and replaced the mic. Reaching into the console he undid the Mossbergs restraints but left it there. Better safe then sorry. Hoisting his duty belt up Wallaces boots crunched up the gravel drive way.

"Ma! Pa!" He called out as he passed his dads old red pickup, looking inside revealed no keys or sign of activity. In fact his dads hunting rifle was still sitting in its rack. A bit more concerned he began to move up the flag stone path to the house.

With a grumble, Mark kicked open the front door of his shack, hunting rifle in hand and a Bowie knife on his belt. His pale green eyes scanning the fields ahead of him, the hubub of the city behind him. He'd spent all night trying to decide whether he was going to find himself food, or go out and buy it, at 4AM, he'd had the bright Idea to go out, so, that's what he was going to do. Checking the rifle one last time he set out, lifting the barrel and resting it over his shoulder.

Whistling a merry tune within minutes, he set his sights on the small woods a mile out, the city behind him and his shack, yet, it was quieter than normal, what exactly was going on, he didn't know, all he knew, was that he was hungry.

The rumor that something is going on at the library spread faster than the light. Murder? Virus? Surprised by the rumor Devin slowly made his way to the library to see for himself what is going on. It didn't take him long to get there, seeing he was only a few blocks away from the library. As he walked around the corner he could see a group of people standing in front of the library. Without saying a word he walked to them and just stood there listening to what the people have to say. A person went into the library just now?

His mind was filling up with thoughts. What if it is a murder? Or worse, a virus? Wouldn't that person be in trouble too then? He looked at the doors of the library and couldn't help but think of the worst case scenario. A murderer using some kind of poison? He tapped the person closest to him on the shoulder. "What exactly has happened?" Devin asked. The answer he was given wasn't the answer he hoped he would get. His heart began to beat faster as the time slowly passed by.

"Isn't there something we could do?" he asked in despair. He wanted this to be over. He still had some things to do at the library. Seeing the situation, he thought that might not be possible. He looked around seeing if anyone has an idea of what they could do. A few people shake their heads, others lifted their shoulders indicating that they don't know.

A Greyhound bus was turned over in a ditch about ten miles west outside of the small town called Logan, the opposite end of town from which Chris was approaching. The police station had received a distress call from the driver just a bit after 8am. Two squad cars and an ambulence had been sent to help the bus full of passengers.

When they arrived, it looked as if everyone was dead on the bus. Windows were splattered with blood and the passengers were piled on the side of the bus, unmoving and not answering to the paramedics trying to make contact. Police officers were in constant contact with the station as the firetruck arrived to try and pry the doors open. No one had been able to enter the bus yet, and the general mood of the people was somber. Their town had not witness a horrible accident of this degree for as long as they could remember.

Murdock was new to the force, and so he was pushed away to let the more seasoned police take charge. His voice showed how relieved he was when the doors were pried open, and he kept the radio open to tell the station what was occuring.

“It looks like we have a survivor! They are pulling the bus driver out now. He looks pretty banged up- Oh god! He just attacked the fireman!”

Before the radio cut off, the sound of gun shots and yelling could be heard.

The rescue team did not respond to any attempts by the station to reach them.

The police station broke out into several different argument. Some wanted to go to the accident scene and see what had happened, others were dazed by the screams they heard. Most of the cops had been friends for years.

The police chief came out of his office holding a piece of paper. The weight of his stern voice quieted everyone, and all of their eyes turned to him. His face was drained and gray looking. He held up the fax he had received before saying,

“The CDC has put Logan under quarantine. The bus was out of Los Angeles where a viral outbreak occurred last night. Our orders are to round up the citizens and bring them to Gabroy High School. They are sending a helicopter with specialists to assess the situation. Call in every squad car we have and have them put up road blocks, then scour the town and get the people to the high school. No one is to leave town. “

The chief walked back into his office as he ignored any further questions. He was frustrated enough that communications with the CDC had given him no answers for most of his questions.

At the least, the high school was built sturdy. It was two levels of concrete and brick, and dated back to the days when the Cold War was going stong and fears of nuclear attack were rampant. That building would withstand anything.

The dispatcher had already placed the call out to all officers to drop what they were doing and report back to the station. Road blocks were being put up, and officers were    gathering the group of people that seemed to be teaming around the library in the center of town. Televisions were displaying the emergency broadcast announcement, directing people where to go.

Already the large crowd of people were growing loud and questioning the police that were sent for them. When the chief heard that one of his senior officers had opened fire on someone, he had the man dragged in and put in a cell. The body was being sent to the morgue, and the hysteria of the people would only grow worse from one of his men losing their head.

With a look of disgust, the chief left his office and prepared to head to the school. The small country hospital had already been informed of the situation, and were sending who they could to the school.

The CDC was supposed to be there no later then noon, and until then he had a frightened town to calm down.

One eye shot open as a faint grumble exited the sleeping messes lips only to be followed by a right hand moving across it and through his hair before he yawned loudly. With several blinks to focus his eyesight the male rose out of bed and into a sitting position: What day was it, hell what time was it the man wondered as he sighed softly before retrieving a cigarette from his nightstand quickly lighting it and taking a deep breath. Smoke shortly followed from his mouth and nostrils as he looked to his desk across the room, his cell phone was blinking like mad with notifications which in turn caused his eye brow to cock up with curiosity. No one ever tried to contact him ever, and now his phone looked like the DOW jones list. He quickly rose out of his bed and made his way across the room and picked it up before pondering what he would read and hear in voicemail. With a sullen sigh he clicked the unlock button and ruffled the back of his hair as he called his voicemail and played it on speaker phone.

"Jonny it's mom, I texted you twice but you never responded you need to stop staying up so late its bad for your health. Anyway sweetie we won't be making it into town there seems to be some sort of-

Ma'am please surrender your cellular device you and your husband are under de-cam~"

and after that the message went silent causing Jonny to looked around with a baffled face as he sighed once more opening his text messages, he had quite a few. Two from his mother, A couple from his friends in classes, and then his eyes stopped on one specific that read 'I'm scared' He chuckled some and sighed smoke as he pushed his cigarette into the ash tray making his way to his closet quickly changing and turning on his television.

His eyes arched as he didn't have a signal he looked around and allowed another sigh as he put a cigarette to his lips once more before grabbing his keys and making his way for the door, might as well head into town now then. He opened the door and the back of his hairs stood on his neck. Not even his million dollar house felt safe anymore. It had dawned on him that something was indeed wrong just from what his phone had told him. Of course he could do without his parents he would just inherit their money but his friends? This was a different story and he had no idea how to answer.

Perhaps a walk? He nodded and moved to his garage opening it slowly and retrieving a black back-pack from the wall and exiting once more as it closed behind him. The backpacks contents were a secret to everyone except Jonny but that is the way he liked it. Slowly he walked down the streets of the neighborhood he lived in, the residence of the gated community were annoying, he hated it here although something caught his eye as he turned his head to the right. A sight that confused him once more why would all of their garages be open and their multi-million dollar cars be gone, and not just one house but several of them were. He took a long drag on his cigarette before turning and walking once more. He wasn't far from downtown and that's always where he would go to clear his mind. Of course today seemed to be filling it more then clearing it.

Needless to say Jonny hadn't been paying much more attention to his surroundings (Abandoned buildings and cars lining the street were a big thing he missed) and finally he had reached his first destination; a small corner store in the big city one of which you couldn't miss because of the vending machine that was chained to the wall outside. He slid his three quarters into the machine and selected his favorite soda of which popped out, quickly he grabbed it and opened the can taking three large gulps before noticing the sign on the door 'Closed until further notice' his eyes narrowed as he looked around. No one was on the streets which caused a bit of tension in his gut as he finally let out a scream followed by "What the hell is going on here!?"[/b] there was no response which caused him to sigh as he took a seat next to the vending machine lighting another cigarette. He was almost out and needed a new pack.

Thankfully there was another pack in his backpack but that was for emergencies only. He allowed a sigh of smoke to exit his lips as he looked at his phone. No signal another odd occurrence in his day.

The sun was still shining brightly as the groups of people outside the library grew into a large crowd, the panic level rising as rumors spread of a citizen round up. Emily tried to calm herself taking a few deep breaths and pushing people gently aside so she could squeeze out of the crowd. Finding a free spot on the side walk she pulled out her phone and tried her sister again...still no answer. The lump in her throat grew and she swallowed down hard, Familiar flashing lights catching her eye she saw a line of police cars come down the road. Fear rolling through her body she felt her knees turn to jelly and she slumped down on the footpath her breath stalling for a moment, The crowd was getting messy as people realized the rumors were fact.
Keep calm The cop on the loud speaker was saying as he instructed every one to make their way to Gabroy highschool for further information and protection. One of the older men in the crowd started yelling over the loud speaker They have closed off the exits! We are being led like lambs to a kebab shop! he yelled trying to drown out the police message. He was arrested seconds later, they pushed him hard into the sidewalk, his hand up around his back as he yelled and struggled trying to make his accusations heard.
Drawing in a long shaky breath as she felt warm tears prickle in her eyes Emily was helped up by a passing woman with a push chair.
"Its going to be alright, Do you want a lift to the High school?" she asked giving Emily a firm rub on the shoulder.
"My sister is meant to be here..." Emily said brushing away a tear that fell loose of her eyelashes and splashed on her cheek
"Well she will be heading to the school aswell, We can find her there" the woman said smiling and nodding her head. Emily nodded in return and followed her away from the crowd to a small four door toyota.
"I heard there is a virus" Emily said her voice sounded strong and confident in her head but came out as a scared whisper
The woman nodded as she strapped her child into the carseat "Its going to be okay" she said
Emily climbed into the passenger seat and strapped herself in No its not she thought as they took off towards the high school following a steady stream of traffic, Emily held her shaking hands tightly in her lap.
As the big prison looking high school came into view she started to realize how truly serious the situation was there was people every where, and officers in high visibility vests trying to control the madness.
"Oh my god" Emily said as they had to park on a sports field "I need to go find my sister" she said throwing open the door and getting out. The woman nodded "You go, we will be fine" she said
"Thank you for the ride" Emily said tapping the car roof and running off into the madness trying to find some one who could tell her exactly what was going on.

Rachel went back into her house just long enough to grab a backpack from under her bed and stuff her purse in it. She was in her car and out on the street within minutes. The radio had been blaring an emergency broadcast signal when she started the car, saying something about people needing to gather at the local high school.

To hell with that! Rachel had to find some way to get to her mother. The streets were so deserted that she had an easy time of working her way towards the road that would lead out of city. She'd just turned the corner and saw the barricade in the road, as well as two police cars blocking the street and the officers standing and looking at her.

They were not going to let her through. Their faces showed no sense of pity, and finally they had lost their patience with her and 'escorted' her to the high school in one of the squad card. At least they had let her keep her backpack.

After being unceremoniously dumped at the front stairs and among the throng of other people, the cop car headed back to their post. More police were standing at the doors as they ushered people inside, then leading them to the school's lunch room.

It seemed Rachel was not the only one that was here unwillingly. Someone was causing a scuffle at the entrance to the big lunch room, yelling about his rights, and taking the police's attention long enough for her to slip away and take the stairs to the second floor.

After trying several locked doors, she finally found one that was unlocked and slipped inside. She shut the door gently behind her and frowned when she saw why it wasn't locked. Someone had busted the lock completely off.  The door was still able to shut, but Rachel left the lights off and moved to the farthest corner of the room before settling down.

She checked her cell, and it was still not working. The crank radio in her bag would be no use right now, not with the emergency broadcast on all the channels and not giving her any idea as to what was happening in town. Rachel took out her short range, hand held CB radio and turned it on. It took a time of tuning the dials, lowering the squelch and background noise.

She came across a conversation on channel four between what seemed to be a few truckers. She didn't speak to them, only listened to what they were saying. She was completely absorbed in the horror of it.

They were telling each other to not stop for anyone, especially if the person looked sick or hurt. One trucker was saying that a band of cannibals were running around, another trucker claimed that there must be a nearby maximum security mental institution that had been overrun and lost their patients. Some were claiming that it was aliens, others were arguing that it was terrorists.

Rachel turned off the CB and put it in her backpack. She should save the battery life. Besides, it didn't matter what it was out there. She knew that if it got in the school, there was going to be a lot of trouble for her.

DarkSideofThinking

A hour had passed since his colleague had left the building to go to the library and David still sat in front of his computer and reading some of the newest posts for zombie stuff. It was the usual blind imagination of people who had never seen a zombie but felt like the super specialists. One even claimed that zombies actually were in his city, causing a huge ruckus over there. But he was still a new member and everyone started to flame him because of it. He didn't even write another post. David loudly exhaled, then suddenly the door was opened and a voice accustomed to commanding came from behind his back.
"Mr. we're evacuating the building please come with us at once". David turned around, looking at a police officer standing in the door and waiting for him and the two others to come with him. It didn't took long for the 4 police men to get everyone out of the company's building but there were too many people to drive them so the group started walking to the high school. He wondered what was happening and if this whole event would take long enough that he wouldn't have to go back to work today. After all it was probably just a training scenario because some politicians thought it would help in a real emergency situation. Some of his colleague's were really stressed and nervous and all her questions were left unanswered by the officers, escorting the group. The evacuation of the city seemed almost finished and the few people who still weren't at the school tagged along when they saw the group.

A little bit later David sat in the lunch room with his colleague. In front of him was a dish with some spaghetti and tomato sauce and he had to remember his own school life. The hall was full with people and some still wanted to get in. The noise was a permanent background atmosphere in different nuances. He could here angry, frightened and carefree voices but couldn't tell what they said.
"I heard there is a virus" said his colleague before eating another fork of not-so-good-spaghetti.
"They have to say something when they do such a town wide practice, right? I mean come on a virus outbreak in Logan? This is the typical small town something like that would never happen here" David countered and waited for the time when the police would announce that they could go back again. He had heard the rumors which people spreaded too. Some said it was a virus others still believed it was a terrorists poison attack and that would also be the reason why so few police men were here. David believed none of that but what if...?
