Star Trek Adventures: Dark Colony

System R11-31876 “Belle Vista” is located on the edge of Federation space. Originally claimed by the Klingon Empire in 2248, the Klingons ceded the planet after only twelve years, never giving an official reason. Federation colonization efforts were briefly considered in 2265, but the 4 Years War and rising tensions between the Klingons and Federation put such efforts on the back burner until 2297. The colony originally consisted of 1,580 civilian personnel and 15 Starfleet personnel who maintained a listening post to ensure the Klingons were abiding by the terms of the Khitomer Accords.

Since that time, the colony has seen a small influx of additional civilian personnel and most of the Starfleet crew retired and simply were never replaced after the Klingon-Federation Alliance. The colony receives regular visits from civilian freighter traffic as well as twice-yearly visits from the USS Theodor Billroth, a Starfleet hospital ship. The population, as of the last report from the Theodor Billroth, was 4,843 with an expected 58 to be born between now and the end of the year.

Approximately 98 hours ago, a brief signal came from Belle Vista. The person reporting the issue was unable to go into detail prior to losing contact. A request to the nearby Klingon outpost of Suv li Ngup je porgh was denied, with a particularly terse message from General K'vak stating that the Klingon Empire would not assist with any operations in system R11-31876. That's where you and your vessel come in.

The USS Ezekiel Rawlins is to divert to Belle Vista at once and investigate the issue. This is a Priority One issue, and all other operations are hereby suspended until this issue is resolved. The USS Franklin W. Dixon is also en route, but will not arrive for another 71 hours. Report all findings immediately to Starfleet Command.
<End Transmission>

Welcome everyone to the Gloom Cookie wants to do scifi and horror, 2021 edition. This year's outing is going to be fun and hopefully a bit scary! You and your crew serve aboard the USS Ezekiel Rawlins, a New Orleans-Class frigate sent to investigate the strange going-ons of the Belle Vista system.

I have a few requirements but they're short, I promise. I want my players to post at least once per week, be willing to make a character sheet for Star Trek Adventures (doesn't take much, there's an online character builder), and come in looking to have a good, fun adventure.

If you're interested, then just use the Character Creation tools below, save the PDF somewhere (Google Drive recommended) and either send me a link or post it below.

Character Creation
First, a link to the online STA character builder

We will be using the Core, Alpha, and Beta Quadrant books, along with Command, Operations, and Science Divisions, as well as TNG and DS9 books. Select these, along with the Next Generation era.

When it gets to Species, you may play any species EXCEPT THE FOLLOWING: Borg, Cardassian, Ferengi, Jem'Hadar, Klingon, Orion, Reman, Romulan, Soong-type Android, Vorta, or Xindi.

Proceed to fill out the rest of the character sheet as directed. You will be making a Junior Officer so please keep this in mind when making the character, since the senior staff are going to be doing other things and you're more expendable that way.

After finishing, please upload your character PDF somewhere I can access it (e.g. Google Docs). Once done, simply fill out the quick info below and post it and a link.

You know that I would love to play a Star Trek game!  I'm a bit worried I'm a bad luck charm though.  Having a horror ST game is particularly an interesting idea given the themes that underlie it.

I would be thinking of an Andorian Junior Officer probably in Command, so a Conn officer with overlap in the Operations skills.  A question on the characters being Junior Officers, does that mean (using the character generator which seems to be back up now) that we should take the Untapped Potential Talent for all of the characters? I'm assuming we'll all be Ensigns with maybe one or two Lieutenants (Junior Grade).

She ended up becoming an Operations officer, a Security specialist.  I hope she meets with approval!  I've linked the character sheet in her name and rank.  Let me know if you want a face claim/pic at all.  I'm also just fine with describing her in her profile or in posts.

Name & Rank: Ensign Shuvon "Shu" (zh')Theen
Species & Age: 22 year old Andorian
Gender (If Applicable): Female (technically shen, the fertile female of the four Andorian genders)
Planet of Origin: Andoria

Personal History: Born on the Andorian homeworld, all four of her parents were heavily involved in the arts.  Two were artists of some skill and minor fame, a pair of musicians that are part of the Andorian blues revival.  The other two were teaches at the Andorian Academy, one of the most renowned art schools in known space.  Her family was also known for the number of children they had, Shuvon being the second of three children.  Her siblings have both followed the artistic path and Shuvon was expected to do the same but it never appealed to her.  An exhibition of martial arts at the Academy caught her attention when she was a child and she started to skip music practice and her parents lesson to study the more martial traditions of the Andorian people.  As she grew older, this caused more and more strain for her at home.  It wasn't until she first entered a tournament with the help of her instructor and won it that her parents began to relent on their opposition.  Even then, there were still arguments and strain as her fathers in particular could not accept her refusal to follow the plans they had for her to become a musician.  Eventually, her father Gheeras felt she pushed too far on an argument and challenged her to the Ushaan.  Blood was shed on the ice and the match ended with Shuvon having injured her father to the point that he could no longer fight.  As he was taken away, her kharakom instructor approached her with an Andorian man she did not know in a Starfleet uniform.  Two months later, after a whirlwind of studying and exams, Commander Shukan Azanor officially sponsored Shuzon to join Starfleet Academy.

The Academy was the first place where Shuzon felt her interests were appreciated as were her skills.  There was plenty of culture shocks at first but she embraced the curriculum and the culture of the Academy.  While the philosophy of the Federation was always a part of her life, it now took prominence.  She became known as something of an experience junkie, willing to try anything and everything at least once and twice in some cases.  Despite that, the young woman did not shirk from her studies and graduated in good standing.  Her first assignment was to the USS Armstrong and it ended up being far more eventful than expected.  As the long-term alliance between the Klingon Empire and Federation fell apart during the Dominion Cold War, the Armstrong was sent to the Archanis Sector just before the Klingons invaded the Federation in the short-lived Klingon-Federation War that raged from late 2372 to mid 2373.

On the world of Ganalda IV, Shuzon was among part of the Armstrong's crew that was deployed to the planet to help evacuate the inhabitants.  The Klingons arrived and attacked, resulting in the first action of her career.  She and much of the crew were on the planet for the week long battle.  During that time, she witnessed the Klingons viciously attack, kill, and ravage unarmed colonists as well as Starfleet personnel.  In one instance that stands out in her mind, the Klingons offered to turn over captured civilians for some of their officers.  As the personnel to be exchanged were being traded, the Klingons opened fire on the civilians, the Armstrong's crew, and their own captured people.  In the fight that followed, Shuzen ended up briefly engaging the leader of that group of Klingons in hand to hand, screaming at him about the supposed honor of the Klingons that was known throughout the galaxy.  He merely sneered and quoted the Klingon proverb "The greatest honor is victory" before the two were separated by fire from both sides.  Shuzen's friend (with benefits) Lt. Anashe Mutsipa was killed in that fight, struck from behind by a Klingon warrior who had been playing dead.  Grieving for him as well as many other shipmates, Shuzon survived the conflict as the Armstrong eventually left the field after sustaining massive casualties and heavy damage.  Transferred to the USS Ezekiel Rawlins, Shuzon served out the rest of the Dominion War and remains as a part of the crew.

Optional Questions:
What is your character's greatest success?

Shuson's greatest success came in the Dominion War when she successfully led a counter-attack against Jem'Hadar boarders who were striving to capture Ezekiel Rawlins' Main Engineering.  Meeting and besting the genetically engineered solders in personal combat was a vindication of the highest order.

What is your character's greatest failure?

Failing to save the lift of her friend and superior officer Anashe Mutsipa on Ganalda IV left a mark on her.  She saw the warrior getting up from where he'd been hiding under the bodies of other fallen while Mutsipa's back was turned as he got a civilian out from under some rubble but she was too slow to get her phaser up or deliver a warning.  She feels as responsible for his death as the Klingon who killed him.

What has had the greatest impact on your character's life?

The Klingon-Federation War and her experiences in it had the sharpest and most lasting influence on her among recent events.  Shuzon never really knew what it was to hate before her experiences there but she does now.

What are your character's short (1 to 5 years) term goal? What are their long term (10 to 20 years) goal?

Short Term - promotion to at least Lieutenant in the next 5 years and ideally becoming Chief of Security on Ezekiel Rawlins or another vessel.
Long Term - rise through the ranks and transfer into Command to become an Executive Officer on a starship.  Have certain ideas she has about cross training Engineering personnel in hand to hand combat implemented and proven valid.  She'd also like to start a family at some point.

What are your character's personal beliefs?

Shuzon adheres to the martial Andorian code of honor; she believes in courageous and noble behavior as well as replying to any insult with the appropriate response.  Knowing that many other species don't fully understand what honor demands of her, she's usually gives them a chance to take back or otherwise change something that insults her with a comment like "I'm sorry, I didn't quite hear that.  What was it you said?"  Those who know her are likely aware that this is a danger sign and that unless an apology or correction is forthcoming, she is going to respond as honor demands.  She isn't a stick in the mud, however, and believes in experiencing as many new things as she can.  Her experiences in the Klingon-Federation War and Dominion War have left her with a zeal for life as she knows it could be cut short at any time.  She also supports and upholds the values of the Federation and tries to live up to what it means to be a Starfleet officer.  She is openly pansexual and makes no secret that she is open to being approached by others for dalliances, so long as it doesn't interfere with their duties, of course.

Does your character have any family or friends?

Shuzon's family consists of four parents (two fathers and two mothers), an older brother, and a younger sister.  She is in touch with her siblings but relations with her parents remain strained.  The wars prompted a brief period of reconciliation but stubborn pride and old wounds (literally in the case of one of her fathers) have caused them to again become distant.  She has some friends from the Academy and her time on the Armstrong, though many of her friends did not survive the Dominion War.

(She is open to being/having friends among the other PCs!  Let's talk about it!)

Does your character have any customs or religious rites they prefer to practice?

Technically Shuzon is a follow of Umarinism, a  popular modern religious construct advocating the duty of Andorians to keep their passionate warrior natures alive and strong to set a holy example for the less passionate races of the Federation.  She's not terribly religious, however.

She is not ritually trained in the Ushaan but she does follow it enough that she will challenge those who insult or dishonor her, though she will accept other forms of duel other than the Ushaan as proper fulfillment of honor's demands.

How does your character feel towards men/women? Do they hope to have children? Are they more of a perpetually single person?

Shuzon is attracted to both men and women, as most Andorians are given their unique biology and method of reproduction.  She wouldn't mind a long term relationship and wants to have children but is not yet in any rush to do so.  She is open to having friends with benefits and lovers from other species.

What does your character do in their spare time?

Shuzon practices martial arts, particularly kharakom, an Andorian martial art sometimes called Andorian kick boxing by other species.  She studies the martial arts of other species as well, trying to synthesize everything she learns into her own unique way of fighting.  She has also taken to studying Psychology as a way to try and better deal with her own trauma and experiences from her wartime service.  Other than that, Shuzon likes to experiment with the culinary traditions of different cultures as well as find time to be social with her friends.

What are your character's beliefs towards the various governments/factions? How do they feel about the Federation? The Klingons? The Romulans?

Shuzon believes that the Federation is the best hope for sentient life in the galaxy to advance and fulfill its full potential.  She doesn't think the Federation is perfect.  There's a lot of room for change and improvement.  But she sees that the Federation is built to change and improve, to adapt, learn, and grow in a way no other stellar nation is. She also thinks that the Federation is about the only government that walks the walk when it comes to its' values.

Shuzon hates Klingons and the Klingon Empire with a passion.  In her mind they are treacherous, dishonorable, vicious bullies.  They preach honor and boast and brag but at the end of the day, their code of honor doesn't seem to stop them from doing whatever they want or using any underhanded trick they can think of.  And that makes it worthless.  She fully expects the Klingons to betray the Federation and break the Khitomir Accords again whenever they decide they want something the Federation has.

The Romulans are not to be trusted.  But unlike the Klingons, they do seem to hold on to their own twisted version of honor.  While they lie and are treacherous and deceitful, at least they're honest about it.  That said, she hopes they decide to crawl back into their own space for another fifty years after all the losses they suffered against the Dominion.

Shuzon has not forgotten about the Dominion.  She thinks that another war with this is inevitable from she knows of their culture and the Founders.  She is disgusted by what the Dominion does with all of its power, resources, and technology.  The existence of the Jem'Hadar as a genetically created slave race is abhorrent and she personally thinks that the Dominion and the Founders got off light for all that they have done.

The Borg are an enemy that genuinely scares Shuzon.  The thought of being assimilated is the stuff of nightmares and she would rather die but knows that she might not get the chance.  She hopes to never encounter them.

Untapped potential would be a good talent to take. It would give you a little flexibility while at the same time keeping you from venturing too far down the veteran path, since we want you all expendable to achieve success on this endeavor.

The USS Franklin W. Dixon is also en route, but will not arrive for another 71 hours.

Sister ship to the USS Carolyn Keene?  :-)

Name & Rank: Proxana, Lieutenant (junior grade)
(I'm fine with changing her grade to Ensign and her assignment to something generic - the generator doesn't give many options for non-senior crew.)
Species & Age: Ardanan, 21 years
Gender (If Applicable): Female
Planet of Origin: Ardana

Personal History:

Proxana grew up in the cloud city of Stratos on Ardana. While Ardana was a bitterly divided culture in the 23C, there's now more mobility; still, she grew up in idle luxury, devoting time mainly to artistic pursuits. She was taught to see herself above the surface dwellers socially as well as physically. This backfired, since it started treacherous thoughts that those in space must be superior to those of Stratos. Her family were opposed to her leaving, but she grew a stubborn streak and exploited their own prejudices and weaknesses to get offworld and join Starfleet.

The Academy decided she was best suited for Command, and the mixing of many cultures swiftly eliminated any residual prejudice from her upbringing. She'd talk politics, and learned to stay composed around people with views she disliked. She was sometimes assigned to security details because of her knack for talking down violent drunks.

As a young officer, she was subjected to a nasty hazing prank when she was beamed down without her uniform. She took it in her stride; the ensign who'd pulled the prank lost his commission. But she retains a preference for shuttle craft.

Towards the end of her first voyage, she was recruited by Starfleet Intelligence for a minor mission, to observe and befriend a delegate at a diplomatic conference who was suspected of planning an insurrection. She accepted, finding the idea of possible danger exciting; she reported her observations, mainly that the delegate wasn't acting dumb but instead just an idiot with an overinflated opinion of himself.

She's nominally the Ship's Counsellor on the USS Ezekiel Rawlins, but her usual role is more of a diplomatic aide assisting the senior officers.

Ardana was a Federation would in the 23C, but is now in Klingon space. Proxana joined Starfleet because she believes in their ideals, but has met a lot of Klingons. She has little experience of Romulans, and knows of their reputation for being untrustworthy, but she still believes in talking first.

Personal History: H'sook has always felt a calling to the stars and defending people and has proved himself a good fighter even tho his family disapproves of his passion for fighting and getting stronger. He applied to star fleet academy which had been a tradition his family has neglected on, his great grandfather being the last member of the family to have served in Star Fleet. so H'sook applied and took to studying and becoming a security officer like a fish to water. while serving aboard his first ship he was mentored by the chief of security who taught him more hand to hand combat and how that battles are decided long before the first punch is thrown H'sok took these lessons to heart forming a disarming approach to fool enemies into a false sense of security before their fate was sealed.

defeating a Klingon in hand-to-hand combat who was a guest on the ship and proved to be a worthy foe.

What is your character's greatest failure?

too become chief of security and eventually become second in command to the captain of a star ship.
What are your character's personal beliefs?
duty and honor are vital to the longevity of those around you. lead by example with integrity and purpose. personal feelings get in the way of doing what you need to do.
Does your character have any family or friends?
H'sook parents aren't the most pleased with his career choice but support him the best they can. his sisters are following after his parents becoming artists and philosophers one is one going for an engineering path but hasn't joined star fleet yet.
Does your character have any customs or religious rites they prefer to practice?

How does your character feel towards men/women? Do they hope to have children? Are they more of a perpetually single person?
H'sook hopes to have a family and settle down one day but doesn't know when or if that will happen. he does find many females beautiful but sadly hasn't been in a serious relationship since the loss of his ship.
What does your character do in their spare time?
train and meditate as well as read philosophies of other cultures and races especially the Klingons
What are your character's beliefs towards the various governments/factions? How do they feel about the Federation? The Klingons? The Romulans?
H'sook feels and hopes peace can be maintained and hope the federation does not fall into the warmongering traps the Romulans and Klingons have fallen into. tho the recent wars with dominion and others have made him concerned. he is hopeful that the federation will rise and be better after this seemingly cold season. he has high respect for the Klingons and their sense of honor and hopes that the relationship between them and the federation can be repaired and made stronger then ever.

Also do we have an OOC?  to talk about character connections and such?  I wasn't sure exactly where to start but I think I got a decent initial post.

Name & Rank: T'Shar, Lieutenant (Junior Grade)
Species & Age: Vulcan, 25
Gender: Female
Planet of Origin: Vulcan

Personal History: Raised on her home world of Vulcan, T'Shar was taught the fundamental lessons of how to control her emotions and the tenants of logic and how to apply it in day to day life.  Her parents stressed that, while important, logic was only the first step on the long road to attaining true wisdom.  She was also taught that, should she wish to experience more of the galaxy and how best to learn how to apply the logic they instilled in her, that she should join Starfleet.  So, heeding their advice, she applied to enter Starfleet Academy, and, thanks to her studious nature and the efforts she made to pass, she was able to graduate with little difficulty.  She focused on medicine and, despite being told by one professor that she had the bedside manner of a wooden plank, was more than capable of treating people despite this fact.  She would go on to take part in the Dominion War, serving with distinction despite the loss of the ship she served on.  Now that she has recovered from that experience, she seeks to continue to serve, and better her understanding of the galaxy, its peoples, and of herself.

Optional Questions:
What is your character's greatest success?  Helping to invent a new method of treating people injured by Dominion energy weapons, increasing the efficiency of such medical procedures by a noticeable margin.

What is your character's greatest failure?  Failing to save someone when she could have during the evacuation of the ship she served on before it was destroyed during the war.

What has had the greatest impact on your character's life?  The loss of her left leg below the knee.  It taught her a great deal about humility and her own mortality.

What is your character's short (1 to 5 years) term goal? What is their long term (10 to 20 years) goal?  To become chief medical officer and perhaps one day command her own relief ship.

What are your character's personal beliefs? That logic and reason are the cornerstones of wisdom, and that her study of other races and their beliefs will help her better understand both herself and how to better apply them in the future.

Does your character have any family or friends?  Her parents on Vulcan, an aunt serving in Starfleet, and she hasn't made any new friends since her last posting nearly went down with all hands.

Does your character have any customs or religious rites they prefer to practice?  Meditation helps balance the mind and allows one better control of the self.  She does her best to do so every day.

How does your character feel towards men/women? Do they hope to have children? Are they more of a perpetually single person?  A romantic relationship, at this point in her life, seems like it would be more of a distraction than anything else.  Children and marriage are, honestly, future concerns that she will consider at a later date.

What does your character do in their spare time?  She enjoys reading in her time of leisure, as well as listening to classical music from various cultures.  She doesn't always enjoy said music, of course, but it is always interesting to learn what other people consider to be "classical music".

What are your character's beliefs towards the various governments/factions? How do they feel about the Federation? The Klingons? The Romulans? The Federation, while flawed, is the best government for interstellar peace and commerce.  The Klingons remind her too much of historical accounts of early Vulcans and Romulans are to be pitied at best, regarded with disdain at worst.  Both could be so much more than they strive to be, yet neither try to elevate themselves from their current places in the galaxy.  What a waste.
