Councilors (9) - A group of important citizens who have banded together in a time of political crisis.  The king has just died, leaving a daughter as the new queen; but she is too young to rule alone.  The councilors (led by an elected Regent) have gathered to protect and advise their new ruler... but they soon learn that there is a rebel faction that hopes to seize the throne.

Rebels (7) - Though the world thinks they are loyal subjects, they know the hazards of having such a youthful ruler, and would prefer to have an adult of their choosing on the throne.  And if this new ruler is willing to reward their support, so much the better.  Each night, they may vote to remove one other player.

Weaponsmaster (1) - This person's skill with weapons is matched only by their loyalty to the Queen.  Once each night, this person may protect one fellow player from harm at the rebels' hands.  The Weaponsmaster can protect him/herself once per game.  They may not protect the same person two nights in a row.  The Weaponsmaster can also save a player from the Alchemist's poison if the target of the poison is being guarded that night.

Historian (1) - No ordinary academic, this person's knowledge of noble geneaologies and history is second to none -- and there is a good deal of useful information to be found in the pages of some books.  Once each night, this person may request to learn one other player's role from the Chatelaine (Valerian).

Alchemist (1) - Practicing the arts of herbs in secret, this player has brewed a sinister potion that can be used once per game, during the night, to poison one other player.  If that person is protected by the Weaponsmaster that night, the ability is wasted and no one succumbs to the poison.  Choose your victim wisely!

Healer (1) - The healer is somewhat the opposite of the Alchemist -- this person has studied herbs with a view to saving rather than killing.  Once per game, this player may choose to save the Rebels' nightly victim.  The Healer will be privately sent the name of the chosen victim for each night; and may then decide if he or she wishes to save that victim.  If yes, no one dies that night at the Rebels' hands; if no, the ability is saved for a later time.  The Healer will not be told who the Alchemist targets, and therefore cannot save that person.

Regent (1) - An elected role.  In the case of a tie in the lynch votes, this person will decide who shall be escorted to Tower Green to meet the headsman's sword.

The court was still officially in mourning, but as usual, meals were still lavish -- after all, appearances had to be kept up.  But this day would bring news of another death, even more shocking than the king's, who after all had been ill for some time.  This time, a young, healthy knight was dead, one Sir Edward; cruelly slain as he slept.  As the advisors gathered for their morning meal, his loss was discovered, and the castle was thrown into turmoil.  The planned business of the day had already been to choose a Regent.  Now that task took on fresh importance.

Voting for Regent is now underway!  Enjoy.  :)

Elandra

Adorned in black as was the custom while morning the King, Lady Elandra had not heard the Sir Edward’s death until she had joined the others for an evening meal. It was a tragedy and something had to be done to bring order back to the lands. Clearing her throat she voiced her suggestion, “I propose we elect Remiel as Regent.”
~~~ ONs & OFFs ~~~ Requests ~~~
sinera
sinera, for one, was happy to see the princess in charge - perhaps now a woman's lot would be more than to just cook, clean and bear a man's babies.
"I think we've had enough of men in charge," she fixes Elandra with a glance. "I vote for LadySky."
Haibane
Lady Haibane was struggling to digest the terrible news of a sudden death in the castle. It was only proper that a regent be appointed as soon as practical so the the Royal Court could again attain stability.
She daintily popped a sweetmeat into her mouth and chewed carefully, considering the discussion around her. She dabbed politely at her lips with a snowy napkin, hearing Sinera's suggestion before leaning forward and looking down the long banquet table, catching the other's glances.
"I agree. My vote also is for LadySky."
LadySky
LadySky blushed uncomfortably at being named for the postition of Regent.
She was all for women gaining rights and more power, however she would be required to wear clothing if she were to take office and everyone knew of her tendency to appear nude quite often.
As she munched lazily upon her morning meal she glanced up and down the long tables, filled with various members of their society. "I believe Moirae would be a good choice."
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.
Teno
"No, I reckon you would be a marvellous regent, LadySky. Besides, who says you have to wear the outfit all the time?" He winks to the lady as he says this.
Autumn52
Xandi hung her head in mourning, so much death. She agreed with the concensus that a new Regent needed to be elected. She looked at her options and voted for, Remiel.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.
White Light be upon you if that is your wish
Mithlomwen
Glancing around at everyone Mith sighed sadly, still in shock and grief at loosing their King.  She pushed the food around on her plate, not really having any appetite at the moment.  "Amberghylles has always been a level headed sort.  I think he would be a good choice to elect as Regent."
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
Winterborn
Wearing the red and white of his House, Sir the honorable Lord Winter, newly Count Aber and Baron Paert, sat at the table, listening as the others spoke. The food in front of him went untouched except for a shifting his utensils and a sip of the wine out of courtesy;  he had but little dealings with the court before the King's death, but the recently discovered death of his comrade left his stomach churning, all appetite driven from him.
Though young and inexperienced compared with his present peers, he knew it was important to know which way the wind blew. Besides,  it seemed to him that the Lady Sky would be a light hand on the queen, impressing some of the liberal social policies she was so well known for. "My vote is f'rr Lady Sky as well," he said, his harsh northern burr coming through due to his nervousness. Casting a quick glance down the table, he nodded to her, lifting his goblet a little in salute.
Remiel
Lord Remiel of Farthinghamhamham partook in the meal, which was a relatively sombre occasion.  It was a period of mourning for all of Carisbrooke; after all, they had just lost their beloved king.  He had died without an heir, leaving only a daughter and some distant cousins to carry on the family lineage.  The daughter was next in line for the throne, but the word in the town was that some of the very Counselors who had sworn fealty to the king were, themselves, descendants of the king's line, and would not support a young, inexperienced Queen.
Dipping his morsel of roasted pheasant in a  bowl of lingonberry sauce, eating with his fingers as was the custom, he cleared his throat and said, "I believe that Ket is uniquely qualified to act as Regent until the Queen comes of age."
Aiden
Sir Aiden "The Lion of Carisbrooke" entered the halls to the sight of everyone cramming their faces full and squawking over mundane matters. It seemed they had forgotten a defender of the land had been slain and by a cowards hand! A sneer crossed his sharp features as he stood away and listened to them, scoffing at the choices.
"I trust none of you but myself (Aiden)!"
He paced around with trembling hand, doing his best to suppress the demand for bloody vengeance.
Ryven
Sir Ryven set his  wine down after taking a drink.  The day had been filled with word of the death of Sir Edward.  A tragic loss.  Now, a regent would be found among them to help lead in the effort to find the late knight's murderer.
He looked around at the rest of the castle dwellers.  Personally, he thought it could have been any of them, so he did what any knight of the court would do...
"I say make me, regent!"  Ryven
Imogen
Lady Imogen broke off a piece of bread and chewed carefully. Her gaze traveled to each of the advisors in turn, resting finally upon the man bristling with anger. "Lord Aiden, how are we to work together with one who refuses to trust us? I'm afraid that casting a vote your way would be voting our own doom."
She smiled to Ryven and then to the others, wiping her hand on a cloth napkin. "I agree with those who put their faith in Lord Remiel and out of respect for him, I shall support his choice of regent. My vote is with Ket."
Dismounting gracefully from his stallion Country de Montagne flipped the reins to the waiting page.  With a quick shrug he settled his armour, and passed the helmet and gauntlets to his squire.  It had been a fine day at the tournament, and he had won a handsome ransom, though the appeal of jousting seemed to be losing favour in the courts and with the papacy.  But still, he had the glove of his beloved next to his heart and that had inspired him through the day.
The news of the murder of Sir Edward was deeply unsettling.  If we are to appoint a regent we must have a clear head and a steady hand.  Kip, you must become our regent.
Haibane
Lady Haibane placed aside her goblet of wine in shock at hearing certain Knights actually have the temerity to suggest themselves as Regent. Such greed was most unbecoming a gentleman and by itself marked such persons as unsuitable. She remained silent, observing the gathering, hopeful that no-one else would support such dishonourable ideas.
Amberghylles
Lord Amberghylles ate heartily as always, foul news was no reason to make waste of a fine meal after all.  "The choice of regent is important," he remarked, "As these are most uncertain times upon us.  Tis a true pity the King left us no proper heir."
Tipping his head, he lifted his goblet toward Lady Mithlomwen.  "I appreciate your compliment m'lady and I say I think you'd make a most excellent regent yourself."
A female as Regent!  Next we'll be told that the church of Rome is not the true faith.
If the best choice of Regent is to be a woman, then let it be LadySky.
SleepyWei
Lord Sleepywei grimaced and placed down his goblet of wine, as if he had just tasted something terrible. He set a gaze onto the rest of the councilors in silence, quietly deciding who he'd prefer to be the regent. Finally, he sighed and gestured to the one that he decided upon.
"There is really no one here who I think qualifies. But out of all of us, I believe Lady Ket over there would be the best choice."
desert ashes
Really, whyever did they have to meet in the mornings?  Mornings were such a better time for sleeping, not meeting about for God knows what.  Dressed in heavy black veils, her face almost entirely obscured from sight, Moirae let out a slow yawn and gently rubbed at her eyes as she spoke.  What were they voting on this time?  Oh, right.
"Mmm."  Prettily she smiled and nodded to LadySky, in thanks of the vote and to give her own.  There.  That was simple enough.
Ket
Lady Ket listened intently at the banter going on around her as she picked at her meal. Their young queen, left fatherless, the man who was best suited to rule in her stead, now deceased as well. What frightful times they were coming into, frightful indeed.
She felt that the best choice amongst them was Amberghylles, and she stated so with confidence before returning to sitting quietly and listening.
Kip
Kip walked in and tried to think of the personalities of each of those in front of him, trying to work out who would be the most considered, most wise.  In the end, he could only choose Remiel.  The man had shown his power with words previously.
This world has no heart and mine is beyond mending."
~Jay Brannan~
~Mohinder Suresh~
Caeli
More trouble and more death; she knew that the king's death couldn't have been the 'accident' that all the healers and royal family had claimed it was. Sir Edward was proof of that - he'd been a staunch and vocal supporter of the young queen, who had known her since she was a young girl claiming she would slay all manner of evil dragons from atop her rugged mountain pony. Now she was older, and from atop her splendid gray stallion, her poise and strength eased many of the fears of the people, who had worried that she might not be fit for the position of Queen.
But of course, that wouldn't satisfy some of the Councilors. There had been murmurs and whisperings of rebellion for days, and Caeli was certain that there were some conservative councilors who did not wish to see such a young, liberally-minded Queen on the throne.
She raised her goblet of white wine and sipped, taking her measure of the group. "It seems there is already a majority, but I would rather agree with Mithlomwen and Ket - Amberghylles has always seemed the level-headed sort, and he is a close confidante of Her Majesty, to boot. I think he would make a fine Regent."
With LadySky officially named as Regent, the court turned its attention to the excellent food provided for them.  The rest of the day was filled with matters of state, all of which seemed to go well, and by the time the group retired for the night, all were pleased at what they had accomplished.
The next morning, however, brought further grim news.  Remiel, a loyal Councilor, was dead in his bed, brutally killed as he slept.  The court was in turmoil.  Action had to be taken, swiftly.
LadySky
A frantic knock sounded at LadySky's chamber door and she rushed to see what could be so important at so early an hour. Finding out the Remiel had been murdered made her blood run cold and she trembled worriedly while she dressed in her mourning clothes. At this rate the kingdom would be swathed in black for years.
Once she had made her way downstairs and met with her new advisers she stated her vote for Aiden, he was the only one yesterday who openly showed such a hostile attitude towards those trying to serve the Queen. She sat down in her newly assigned seat and tried to eat her breakfast but her hand shook so badly barely a bite made it to her lips.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.
Ryven
"I rather think Marguerite was more likely to pull off such a deed.  I have nothing to go on though."  Ryven said before going to pay respects to a fellow knight.
Autumn52
Lady Xandi terrified by the events of the evening, Lord Remiel a loyal servant of the crown found dead in his bed was terrifying indeed. As Lady Xandi scanned the others she remembered that in the vote yesterday, "Marguerite" had seemed more interested in the peasant boy with the strong arms and large thighs than she was in the vote for a New Regent. Lady Xandi placed her vote for her since her behavior was so suspious.
After placing her vote Lady Xandi, exhausted from mourning over her dear friend Lord Remiel, left the others so that she could mourn in silence.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.
White Light be upon you if that is your wish
Imogen
"Marguerite is far too busy with stable boys." Imogen toyed with the crucifix she wore on a delicate chain around her neck. "If there's anyone we know where she was last night, it's the "lady" Marguerite." Her voice was a bit petulant as she devoutly lowered her eyes.
"As for Lord Aiden, I agree he's a brute. But he was right to trust no one. Lord Remiel has been murdered by stealthily hands in the night. If Lord Aiden had killed him, he'd have butchered him in the open.. Even in the courtyard maybe...." The lady shivered and her fingers tightened around the plain cross.
"I believe the lady Moirae to be the murderer. Perhaps in her evil ways, she has sought to repay Ladysky for her vote by removing the regent's closest competition."
Lady Imogen rose and bowed her head to those present. "If you'll excuse me... I will be in the chapel, praying for us all."
desert ashes
Perhaps in her evil ways?  Moirae stood stunned in the doorway, having just heard of her dear Remiel's death and then Imogen's slander.  While the loss of the King was grave, indeed, to lose a beloved was even worse.  The loss was acute and wore heavily on the woman's frame.  Yet, she could say nothing to Imogen, merely turn her head away to hide the tears and quietly find a place at the end of the table.
"That my fondness for Remiel would be so smeared is heartbreaking," she murmured and drew in a quiet breath.  "Thus, I vote for Imogen."  She hadn't an inkling who the real killer was, but she was hurting enough to lash back.
Mithlomwen
The Lady Mith stared in shock and disbelief as word reached her ears of Remiel's death.  How could this have happened?  She listened as the threats and accusations flew around, not knowing who to believe or who she could trust.  There was no way to know who was responsible for the murder of one of their own, at this moment everyone was a suspect.
She pointed a finger at Haibane not having any real idea if she was guilty, but the paranoia of having a murder among them caused her to place blame where there possibly was none.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
Amberghylles
Amberghylles watched the exchange between Imogen and Moirae as accusations about Marguerite floated in the air, though which was the more unflattering version of her actions the night before was hard to be sure of.
"Regent Ladysky," he said quietly, "I do have to agree that while Lord Aiden might have been inclined to harm the departed Lord Remiel, he does not strike me as a man who would act in under the cover of night in such a cowardly manner.  My own suspicions lie with a motive less passionate.  I think there are those who would seek to subvert the rightful rule of the young Queen in favor of a less willful choice.  Lacking clear proof, I will say that Lady Haibane has lost certain valuable lands to the crown.  I hate to cast such aspirations, as many others have been given similar motive to violate their oaths of fealty by the late King and remained loyal to the crown."
Haibane
Given the votes against her in the council chamber, Lady Haibane stood up and straightened her back.
"My Lady Regent, my Lords, Ladies, Knights, Gentlemen..." her gaze swiftly measured the room, "And you other lowly curs... I see there is a motion to vote me as the murderer. May I say a few words?"
The lady looked about the room, silence was her witness.
"I thank you."
"Among us we have a rebel party, some group of persons undesirable who are about some dark mischief, for a purpose for I know what end. However given our youthful Princess and our Lady Regent I would vouch that they seek their own form of power. They have already struck! The blood of Sir Edward and Lord Remiel is already on their hands! We, my friends, sit among murderers."
"Takers of noble blood! The basest of crimes."
"This is not a time to point fingers randomly or in panic at those we might personally distrust. This is a time for those loyal to the Princess to stand together and strike back at the cancerous rebels within our noble court. For it is a noble court. A Royal court. And in its hour of need it beseeches of noble people."
The lady drew herself higher, lifting her chin. "I am no rebel! I swear allegiance on all that is holy - the Good Book itself - that I am pure and loyal of heart and will serve our Princess. I would ask those yet to cast their votes to search their hearts and look at the votes already cast for the Regent. Look at the names. Study these things and dwell on them. There is to be seen in the voting pattern I fear, a story writ by the guilty!"
"I am a loyal councillor. I believe there is meaning in those who voted in the majority for either Lady Sky or Lord Remiel (may the Lord have mercy on his soul). Lady Sinera, myself, Lord Teno, Lord Winterborn, Lord Country, Lady Moirae all voted for Lady Sky. If Lady Sky is a rebel then there, my kinsmen are your Rebels!"
"Should you put me to death then my death, being innocent shall have served its purpose! Look to those who voted me to the gallows."
"Lord Ket was voted for by Lord Remiel, Lady Imogen, Lady SleepyWei and Lady Marguerite. We know that Lord Remiel has fallen to the Rebels already. I believe that the above names are pure and loyal."
"Look at the names and the voting that has gone before. Choose nobly, my friends. Choose wisely. Only your conscience will lie on your shoulders..."
Casting a further glance around the room Lady Haibane sat down having still not cast her vote.
SleepyWei
"I do not know whether or not I should take your words for compliment or insult, Lady Haibane." Lord Sleepywei snorted and crossed his legs while he idly fingered his goblet of wine. "I do hope that you spoke that merely in jest or I shall take your comment as a blow to my masculinity."
"But aside from that all..." He cast an eye to the Lady who had just spoken so fervently. "Surely, no one here aside from the assailants themselves would know who killed the late Lord Remiel. We have no evidence, no proof... merely speculation. Of course hysteria will rouse us to call for death. For it is in our nature to seek closure, no matter how baseless it might be."
The humorless lord then turned his gaze to the other party that had voted for their lady regent. "Your argument bares good judgment, my Lady Haibane. Merely the fact that those two agreed so quickly to cast you into the gallows may be proof enough that they are not as innocent as they might appear."
He then offered Lady Haibane a smile and nodded. "I shall trust your words today then and place my vote for our dear Lord Amberghylles."
Haibane
The Lady Haibane demurely bowed to Lord SleepyWei. "A thousand apologies, my Lord for the error over your gender. It has been a most distracting time..."
Quote"Your argument bares good judgment, my Lady Haibane. Merely the fact that those two agreed so quickly to cast you into the gallows may be proof enough that they are not as innocent as they might appear."
If two persons were to so quickly align to smear the name of another without proof does that not in itself imply they are in league? Or know something we do not? And the only party here in league - or who know something - are the Rebels."
"I rest my case."
The Lady bowed again and returned to her seat.
Amberghylles
Lord Amberghylles scoffed.  "By the logic of voting in unison, you would accuse Lady Xandi and Lord Ryven of being rebels for both suspecting Lady Marguerite and voicing their opinions together.  I will confess, I do count Lady Mithlomwen as a close friend and we did confer in private about our suspicions before voting.  However, casting doubt upon me for merely failing to vote for  your choice of regent is little more than a thinly veiled power play at best and a childish slur at worst."
Haibane
Lady Haibane remained silent, merely fixing Lord Amberghylles with a calm gaze. Clearly emotions were running so high that reason was departing people's minds. All it required was calm logic. Of course, if those speaking were Rebels already, then the discussion was fruitless. Or worse than that.
Teno
"I think perhaps Lady Haibane has a point there." Teno began. He looked to all in the court, taking in to account the votes which had gone before. "There is truth in you words I feel, but we should still go with caution. Untill otherwise proven innocent, we are all as suspect as the next person. However, after saying that, blindly pointing the finger at people can lead to loyal people being unfairly punished. I feel Mithlowmen may be trying to misdirect us all."
Mithlomwen
#41
Mithlomwen shook her head at the accusation.  "I am most certainly not."  Glancing around the room, she swept her hand wide to encompass the whole group.  "Can you good sir, pinpoint exactly who the murder is?  If so, then pray please enlighten us as to who you think it is, for I would most certainly vote for them instead of an innocent.  Who says that the Lady Haibane is not in fact the one trying to lead us astray for trying to cast doubt amongst us already in regards to whom we have voted for."  She quirked an eyebrow at Teno awaiting his answer to that.  "Someone here is guilty of murder, and until it can be proven who in fact did such a horrific deed, everyone is suspect are they not?"
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
Elandra
There was no question, there was a murderer or murderers amongst them, rebels who clearly wanted to disrupt the way of things. Lady Elandra had no clue whom these rebels were, she only certain that she was not one.
Listening to the words of others, she became convinced that Mith spoke truth and so she voted with her, “Haibane is guilty of this despicable act.”
Caeli
Guildmaster Caeli's bark of laughter was sharp, as she strode into the dining hall after Lady Haibane finished her drivel-ridden speech. The follies of sheltered nobles - they all thought everything was black and white, that good and evil could be split so evenly. "Oh, please. Would any rebels against the throne be so obvious? If all those councilors who voted for LadySky are rebels, I'll eat my grandmaster's pin whole." The sword-and-shield pin featuring prominently on her lapel marked her as a grandmaster of the Weaponsmith's Guild; there were a number of other guildmasters on the Queen's council, though she was one of the only women. "If LadySky is a rebel, nobody but she and the other traitors would know it; if you look at the simple probability, there are bound to be faithful councilors who would fall into the vote unknowingly. We have every one of us served the Crown faithfully until now, after all.
"And likewise - just because Lord Remiel is now dead, does not mean that those who voted for him to be Regent were innocent. There is no way any of us can know who is traitor, unless that person is also a traitor."
Caeli sipped her goblet of wine and shrugged as she took a seat. "I don't know who supports the princess, and who plots to overthrow her - but don't you think you're protesting a little too much, milady?" For better or worse, she'd cast her vote for Haibane; there simply was no way to tell who was on Her Majesty's side, and who was not.
Argument and discourse.  Would the court ever be different?  It seemed that every decision was always preceded by endless rounds of rhetoric.  We seemed doomed to endure sessions of innuendo, gossip, and even scurrilous comments about members of our court.  Occasionally, we see a flash of wit and even an odd attempt at logic.
But. as the day progresses with the court consuming more wine, the dialogue becomes ever more intertwined and interwoven.  With some arguments, it is difficult to determine if the intent is to confuse or clarify the minds of the listeners.  Are we to be wooed or put to sleep?
How are we to know that Lord Ryven, Lady Sinera, Lord SleepyWei, Lord Teno, or Lord Winterborn, to name but a few at random, are not involved?  I look to Lord Winterborn and ask where his loyalty lies?
sinera
#45
sinera entered quietly, as was her wont, taking her accustomed place at the table. She'd heard many of the arguments as she'd made her way to the hall - the castle was great for acoustics.
She thought about what Haibane said, and her words moved sinera... however Amberghylles also made a good point about ambition and removing competition. Although Aiden was the type to strike openly, was Lord Ryven also that type?
If he were working with the rebels to remove those who would be considered effective regents for the land, then all those who received 3 or 4 votes had better sleep lightly and with a dagger under their pillows. She herself had taken to sleeping with one, even though she prayed she was of small enough importance for the rebels to overlook.
Haibane
Lady Haibane rose again with a sigh. It seemed the rebels were gathering and making no effort to hide their intent.
"I am innocent. I know this, yet there is no proof except what is in my heart. It is plain to me that the rebels among us are circling to kill off the one innocent party here who dares to speak against them. Note well their names: Mithlomwen, Amberghylles, Caeli, Elandra... and whomsover else votes that I should die an innocent death. These are your rebels. These are the guilty. At dawn, should I walk to the executioner's block I shall do so with a light step and a glad heart for I know that my death would not be in vain, for my blood will spill out and writ the names of the guilty. When my innocence is proven, so shall their wicked deeds."
"I state before you all that Amberghylles is guilty - a person who has demonstrated this fact by alluding to private conversations between himself and Mithlomwen, for none of us can be sure of the identity of any other except the rebels who communicate by hidden signs and proofs. To claim you trust another in a private room is to prove you both are rebels. I ask those remaining loyal to Her Majesty to note these my views and to stand together to vote en-bloc for the wicked Amberghylles, for the time will soon come when there are precious few of those loyal left to affect the outcome."
"I go now to rest in my private chambers, though I know those of true heart will report to me the discussions of import in my absence. Good day to all of you who have honour."
With this Lady Haibane withdrew with her personal chambermaid and bodyguard.
Mithlomwen
"So you draw your conclusion that he is guilty simply because he confers with me?  What about the rest of the good folk here who have spoken privately with another?  Does that make them guilty as well?"  Lady Mithlomwen asked her curiously.  "I can assure you that I am no rebel, and I suspect that if Amberghylles was a rebel he would not be speaking with me about whom the killer was."
She glanced around the room once more, looking each and every person in the eye and then sat down.  "Me thinks you protest so loudly because you are trying to place blame elsewhere, instead of where it belongs. On the rebel's shoulders."
Baby, it's all I know,
Winterborn
The least experienced of the councilors sat slightly apart from his colleagues, carving idly on the table with his dirk as they bickered over right and wrong, rebel and patriot. He decided himself safe from the accusation of conspiracy, since he had neither sought council nor given it to others, instead remaining -- as he was now -- apart. It was obvious to him that he had to cast a vote along with the others, but he had no desire to strike down another without just cause. There were no rivalries between his house and any of the others, nor any alliances. Were there any, he would leap at the chance to bring them down.
What was not apparent was the purpose behind this panicking, reminiscent to him of the bleating of frightened sheep. Sheep who sniff wolves on the air, he thought to himself, and with that he stood, his mind cleared.
"Without further evidence of malignance by any of the lords and ladies here, I can do naught but trust to the wisdom of our newly elected regent." Here, he bowed to Lady Sky. "As such, I cast my vote in with hers. I denounce Lord Aiden as a rebel and a murderer." Sitting, he picked up his long bladed dagger again, setting it's tip on the table and turning it with his fingers so that it dug into the wood. This satisfied both honor, and his own personal aversion to throw his lot in with panicky civilians.
Aiden
"Hold your tongue boy, perhaps by title we are equal, but do not think I will let another lord make such accusations without retaliation."
Lord Aiden was never far without his sword, even in formal garb. His hand caressed up and down its worn down leather straps (Wrapped around the handle) that proved years of merit on the battlefield. His gaze locked down on the accuser, circling him like a predator who was about to strike from the flank with a graceful step, watching him crudely misuse his dagger.
"A dagger suits you well...it is best made for the fodder..."
A sneer crossed his face, the blade pulled a few inches from its worn hilt, revealing aged and reforged steel.
"Winterborn, pray for the mercy of the noose...or it will be splattered across my blade before days end."
With a disciplined snap, he circled the table and sat directly across the man he had vowed to see slain.
Winterborn
Half-standing, he yanked the tip of his dirk from the tabletop, ignoring his great sword where it hung from the back of his own chair. "I name you such as a loyal man of the crown and regent, not out of self-interest. Take no insult from what I say, for I do only my duty, without puttin' airs on to raise m'self up beyond my level. If you truly think me to have stained your honor, let us take this matter to the lists. A few hours spent pounding on each other with lance and blade 'twill set our minds to rights." He set his dagger down, leaning heavily upon the table as he stared across at the other man, his expression thunderous.
sinera
sinera's nerves were stretched to the breaking point. The sound of Winterborn's blade dragging on the table grated on her; when Aiden started in on his accusations and blatantly challenged Winterborn she'd had enough.
"Stop it!" she shouted, slamming her tankard back on the table and leaping to her feet. "Is it not bad enough that His Majesty has died? Now we have malcontents creeping about and slaying all of us loyal to Her Majesty!" she glared at them both.
"You claim the right to wear sword and spurs, Aiden, yet all we've seen from you is blustering and posturing; you're a pompous, self-righteous, self-serving pain in the ass! You spend your time trying to grab power and make a name for yourself instead of protecting those who need protecting."
She sighs and sits down, frowning at him. "He's not a rebel. He's too arrogant to allow himself to be considered one of the rabble. In fact, I'm surprised he was willing to settle for regent. He'd have been pressuring Her Majesty to marry him before her year's mourning was over. I'm glad we chose a female regent."
Country sits quietly, easing his frame, muscles tired and sore from the tournament and overnight ride back to the castle.  He finds the posturing wearisome, and chuckles quietly to himself as lady Sinera so eloquently states her view of the two blustering, swaggering, pompous knights.
They both seem quick to turn to violence when they want to resolve issues.  Do they look to this means to resolve all matters of the court?
Despite her eloquent pleas and logic, Haibane was chosen to die.  She held her head high as she was taken to the green, where all traitors meet their end, and insisted on her innocence to the last.
And innocent she was, for that day, the headsman's axe took the life of a loyal Councilor, a faithful servant of the Queen.
LadySky
As Regent, LadySky was forced to follow along with the majority vote. She did not believe however that Lady Haibane was a guilty murderess. As she watched the execution her heart sank, she had feared the Lady Haibane was being sent to her death wrongly and before her eyes she saw her fears come true.
Immediately she ordered Lady Haibane's remains be given a proper and generous burial, her name to be honored on the lips of all in the kingdom. It was not enough however, too little too late she sighed sadly.
Would they continue to suffer loss after loss like this? The thought made her tremble and she retired quickly to her chambers, locking herself away for the night as she tried to pull her wits together.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.
Autumn52
When Lady Haibane was executed Lady Xandi looked away. She could not stand the thought of yet another innocent losing her life.
Lady Haibane had made quite a few accusations and now she was dead. Could she have been right?
Lady Xandi feeling faint from the events of the past few days and now with this, she retired to her bed chamber to try and understand why this was happening to the royal court.
Aiden
In a silent gesture to the dead, he steps away from the scene the mob deemed justice before he spoke.
"Think of those who voted for an innocent to lose her life on this day, A loud mouth she might have been...but the noose was far harsh a punishment for that. Those who pointed fingers at her are my prime suspects as the rebels that threaten the kingdom..."
With a cautious and mistrusting glance he glared Mithlomwen, Amberghylles, Elandra, Caeli, Marguerite and Ket.
"Those who are alive in the morn, I will bid you farewell till then..."
sinera
sinera sighed as Haibane was proven innocent, as she had been sure the lady had been. Tears filled her eyes as she realized that the blustering of certain so-called knights had probably overshadowed the truth that Haibane had tried to tell the others about.
Part of her wondered if those who had voted to lynch the lady had done so truly believing her guilty, or just because she was making so much noise... if so, she could think of another who was likely to meet the same fate.
Winterborn
Winterborn attended the execution and service afterward in a simple red tunic and breeches, the color a gesture of goodwill towards the fallen. As before, he stood apart, contacting no one except with meetings of the eye and shallow nods, speaking no words and offering no counsel until the last.
"Have ye a good rest, good lords and ladies. I will'nae be found asleep this night, but awake with sword and dirk in hand. Come who may."
And with that, he turned for his quarters, square of shoulder and broad of stride as ever.
Valerian
Those who remained slept uneasily that night.  Was that faint, chill breeze merely a draft?  Or did the restless spirits of the newly dead already haunt the dark stone halls?
Perhaps there were uneasy ghosts, but the living were more dangerous now.  The next day, Marguerite, another loyal Councilor, was found slain in her bed, the rich bedding and sofft pillows stained with her life's blood.
LadySky
This morning LadySky had arisen before the sun began to peek over the horizon. She made her to the council chambers, praying the night had passed in peace. Hearing that the Queen was safe and sound within her rooms made her breathing ease somewhat, then one of Lady Marguerite's chamber maids came rushing, screaming to them with tears of terror streaming down her face. "My Lady has been slain, she is dead!", the girls cries made the Regent's heart freeze with anger and worry. It was not over, it had only just begun it seemed.
Once in the banquet hall she raised her voice for all to hear, "My vote stays with Lord Aiden, he has been the most obviously angered and rebellious of our people, I can only place my vote to one who gives me reason to distrust and the vocal Lord has indeed given reason."
Taking her seat she slowly began to pick through her meal, her heart pounding with her anger, her gut swirling with her confusion.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.
Autumn52
As the news of poor Lady Marguerite's death spread through the council Lady Xandi wept in silence. Only yesterday she had suspected Lady Marguerite as a rebel. Now the demon rebels had slain her. What a tragedy, another loyal friend to the crown struck down.
Lady Xandi's eyes swept the room to see if she could figure out who was killing her friends. Her attention was soon focused on Lady Imogen, she had been quite adamant about her disapproval of Lady Marguerite's extra curricular activities with the stable boys. Perhaps she had been jealous of Lady Marguerite's blatant disregard for what others thought.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.
sinera
sinera entered the hall even more soberly than the day before, if it were possible. Lady Haibane's lynching the day before brought home to her that none of them were safe - not from the rebels, nor from each other.
She blanched as LadySky announced that another innocent had died in the night. Marguerite, who had lived and loved so freely, had been murdered in her sleep.
"I wonder," she mused aloud. "Haibane had been so convinced of who the conspirators are. Her arguments were quite convincing. I can only presume she was correct; I think perhaps Mithlomwen may be a rebel."
Mithlomwen
"I am no rebel, I can assure you."  The Lady Mith replied to Sinera with a shake of her head.  "At this moment all guesses as to who they are, are just that...guesses."  She glanced around the room, trying to decide to her who it was that looked like they might possibly be a rebel.
"Perhaps since you are so eager to lay blame on me it is in fact you Lady sinera that is to blame for the innocents slaughtered these past days."  Mith said, quirking her brow at the woman.
Imogen
After Lady Haibane's execution, lady Imogen retreated to the Chapel and sank to her knees before the Virgin Mother. She prayed for the innocent councillor's soul until early morning. Her eyes were red-rimmed from tears when more sad news greeted her: another loyal councillor had been killed. She gathered her skirts and hastened to the hall where the advisors gathered, arriving barely in time to hear Xandi's accusations. Her fingers released the wooden beads of her rosary and she turned towards Xandi.
"My lady." Imogen addressed Xandi, "Were this any other time, I would not concern myself with this foul accusation. I am innocent and known as such amongst this court. But I ask you... No, I beg you, remember that it was my voice who spoke up in defense of Lady Marguerite, and that I am one of the Queen's advisors who was named by our poor friend, lady Haibane, as one innocent and reliable. My friend, we cannot afford to stand divided in these times... We must act as one and save our beloved sovereign with our steadfast advice."
Hearing Sinera, Imogen bowed her head. "I agree with Sinera. We must look towards Mithlomwen if we are to find the snake among us."
sinera snorted. "Of course, I expected nothing less - accuse the one who pointed the finger at you... but the fact remains that you were the first to accuse Haibane, and Haibane has been proven to be innocent. Why else would you have accused her but because you yourself are one of the rebels?"
She sat back in her chair. "Convince me otherwise and I will change my vote. Haibane was convinced that you were a rebel; she died because you convinced the others *she* was the rebel. Use your powers of persuasion to convince me to vote for someone else."
Teno
"My lady Haibane, I am sorry I could not protect you." He said with his head bowed. Mithlowmen had began casting the blame on his fair lady Haibane, and while he was unable to proclaim her innocence as effectively the previous day, he hoped to do better this.
Mithlomwen
"I have nothing but my word to offer."  Mith replied to her simply.  "I know that I am not a rebel, but I am not sure what words I can offer you that you will believe."  Her eyes searched that of the other woman's, hoping that she would see the truth of her words shining in her eyes.  "I could give you a long elaborate speech as to why you should change your vote, but the 'prettiness' of words will not change the fact that what I say is true.  I am just as scared as the rest of you.  I do not want to die, and I do not want to die at the hands of my kinsmen, but I know not of what else I can say to convince you."
And the night passed, and again, the morning brought argument, debate, and all manner of insults flying around while they sipped their morning tea and ate breakfast.
"So you're saying that everybody who voted for Haibane was a rebel, sinera?" Caeli asked sarcastically. "Then what does that make Marguerite, who surely was not a rebel?"
"Perhaps she wasn't a rebel, my dear Lady Caeli." Sleepywei propped his head lazily against his fist and absently swirled his goblet. "Perhaps she simply decided to join the majority in voting for Lady Haibane's death. But that doesn't mean that the other four of you weren't conspiring to kill her in the first place."
The councilor set aside his goblet and crossed his legs as he leaned back into a more comfortable position. At the same time, he folded his hands neatly onto his lap and shrugged his shoulders. "Besides, your tone of voice seemed downright defensive and spiteful. Does that not come suspicious to anyone else? I would like to cast my vote on to Lady Caeli."
"It's obvious Marguerite wasn't a rebel - anybody with eyes could see that. But how do you know that the rest of us didn't simply just choose someone at random and follow along because they hadn't a clue who was the traitor?"
SleepyWei
Sleepywei smirked and held out his hands in a helpless gesture. "Me? Why would I know anything? I'm as clueless to all of this as any other honest councilor. But the simple fact that our fellow voters were haphazardly pointing fingers at one another while a clear half decided on one was suspicious right away."
"And not knowing who killed who but following the group decision simply because they were majority? That sounds like a bunch of helpless lambs being led by a corrupted shepherd. I stand with my decision. Someone among your fellow voters must be a traitor."
country
Yesterday the acid in the tone of two of the knights of this court was such as to sour the wine.  Their haste to their weapons gives pause for thought.
The news that reaches us today, before the matins have even begun, would put us off our porridge.  Vile accusations and insults are flung about with abandon.  Where they alight seems to be by chance; or is it?
Lord Aiden clearly expected to be present this morning and Lord Winterborn prepared himself for the evening with a quantity of weapons.
Are the assertion correct that those who selected Lady Haibaine are the rebels and that Lady Marguerite innocently voted with the majority?   If so, Lady Caeli’s arguments may be nothing more than a screen to protect herself and her fellow rebels.
Caeli
"If the rebels among us want to kill somebody, I doubt they need to do anything but sit back and let the rest of us bicker. If they're killing one councilor every night, all we need to do is bicker amongst ourselves, and we'll be doing all the work for them."
She calmly plucked a slice of apple from the plate of fruit in front of her. "If you want to have me killed for seeing signs of guilt and following them appropriately, that's fine - you'll be sorry after you kill another innocent councilor, though." It was just a no-win situation with Lord Wei - you were either a sheep, or you were guilty. He'd always been rather bullheaded and short-sighted, unfortunately, and an imminent rebellion wouldn't change that.
sinera
sinera raised her brows in surprise at the barely-suppressed anger in Caeli's voice. "I said no such thing, Caeli. In fact, though I suspect Mithlomwen's guilt, mostly because Haibane convinced me of it, I said I believed Mith's powers of persuasion convinced the rest to vote against the lady."
"Could it be that you've reacted so violently to my vote against Mithlomwen because you actually are one of her co-conspirators? Or could it be that you are accusing me to draw attention away from yourself? Your behavior is making me wonder, Caeli."
I am in agreement that Mithlomwen is suspicious.
Mithlomwen
Mith glanced around at everyone, not believing that they were all voting against her.  "You cannot be serious.  Just because I can argue well against someone that was acting suspicious you think I am a traitor?!"  Her eyes showed her disbelief not understanding why everyone had suddenly turned against her.
"If you kill me, you will all feel like a bunch of traitors yourself for I AM innocent.  I am loyal to our beloved Princess, and upon my death you will see that what I speak is true."
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
Winterborn
Lord Winterborn arrived, seeming not a bit bothered by his restless night. Surely his eyes may be slightly shadowed, but sharp nonetheless, and his posture is as rigid and sharp as ever.
"I still hold that Lord Aiden's behavior shows him to be at odds to the goals of this council. He put himself forward for Regent without any support, before or after the nomination. He shows contempt for his peers in full public and refused to show himself a true warrior on the field of battle. He showed himself a craven bastard instead, the very kind who would go skulkin' in the night and take the lives of his fellow nobles with a black-bladed knife."
Looking around at the others, he pounded the table with a large, long-fingered hand, hammering it with the flat of his palm and causing the heavy furnishing to shudder and jump with the force of his blows.
"Damn him, I denounce His Lordship again, and a thousand times till I see a wick'a proof that it isn't so! Take offense if you may," he said directly to his opponent, "and challenge me for my words. We'll see the color of your blood, red or yellow!"
He stood by his chair, then, shoulders heaving with his fury and one hand poised over the hilt of his sword, where it hung from his chair as it had done the day previous. His eyes were fixed on Aiden, and he looked quite frightfully mad at the moment, most likely the lack of sleep showing through at the last. After a moment, he shook himself, and there was an audible click as his sword slid a full inch back into the scabbard, but his eyes never left Aiden.
"I am reacting to your words, sinera, because your vote against Lady Mithlomwen is based purely on the fact that she made a good argument, and the person who happened to die was an innocent councilor. Would you so accuse her if the one she had pointed at was a rebel, as might very well have happened? Somebody must always speak first; and if we were all to point blindly and have a four-way tie like Lord Wei over there suggests, we would be no better off than simply sitting here and waiting for the rebels to kill us one by one."
Caeli shrugged. "Of course, since Lord Wei over there is so certain that I am the evil that you must be hunting, and you seem to follow his assumption of guilt by association when no such association exists, then maybe he is the one with co-conspirators on the sly, not I." It was almost amusing, to see the nobles amount them spin about without any sort of direction.
"The Lady Sinera's words are not without merit." She leaned towards lady Caeli. "Although I admit that part of my vote for the lady is based on guilty by association. Lord Amberghylles has mentioned his regret that, and I quote his words, "the King has left no proper heir". He has confessed to having conferred privately with lady Mithlomwen on their choices. I do not trust him, and therefor I do not trust her. Truly, my vote should rest with Lord Amberghylles, but as his associate had already been named. It seems wise to band together in these dark times."
With that, she fixed a stern look at Xandi, Moirae, Aiden and Sleepywei.
"And hear me, Lords and Ladies, for until now the four of you have squandered your votes. You have spoken out of spite, and I say this must stop."
"I ask you to put aside what insults have been made against you for the greater good. And in asking so, I offer my own apologies to the lady Moirae for my grief stricken accusation yesterday. I ask you now to make a difference... And tell you openly, if you fail to do so, eyes shall be turned to those who cast their voice to the wayside for their own designs"
Aiden
Aiden's gaze had locked on the babbling noble with annoyance across his brow, when he finally silenced himself he let out a roar of laughter.
"I knew I have seen this before, a young cockerel standing up to the rooster to simply find his place in the world, I said it once and I will say it again...watch your tone boy!"
He sneered at the fellow lord before focusing his attention to the lady who recently addressed him.
"On what evidence do you have that I have squandered my vote? I was not among those who voted for the death of Lady Haibane...her death is not on my conscious now is it?"
His unwavering gaze fell upon her for a few moments until she had his attention.
"I served my King and will serve my queen, I know nothing else but to be a knight...as for the lot of you...pointing fingers. You trust to quickly, I would be weary of those who keep a disciplined tongue to conceal far wicked agendas. Winterborn I do not think you are a man of treachery, I do not consider you cleaver enough...you are simply a pup trying to play with the older hounds. But you Ryven, I have a gut feeling you are hiding something from the rest of us."
Ryven
Your idle speculation means nothing to me.  I have nothing to hide.  I have been and always shall be loyal to the queen.
sinera
sinera rolls her eyes. "You have no proof against me, do you? Tell me - what about me makes you so eager to point your fingers in my direction, hmm? Indeed.
"Still we cast about in darkness for the ones who are responsible; I have long made clear my position: I believe that Her Majesty will grow into a capable ruler, one who can rule this land long and well with or without a male consort. Why would I tear at Her foundation if I wish for her to succeed?
"Perhaps I am being censured now for holding to the truth that a woman is as capable as a man," she shrugs sadly. "Perhaps it is because I speak my mind and argue clearly - in truth, isn't that why many of you voted to lynch Lady Haibane? Because her words made her stand out in your mind.
"Haibane was innocent, as am I. Don't kill me because I put in plain words what others only hint at; don't slay me because you really don't know who to vote for and by golly I'm as good a person to murder as anyone else. If you vote to lynch me, then do it because you honestly believe I am one of the rebels."
Mithlomwen laughed and blinked at her in amazement.  "So you would accuse others of doing to you  what you are doing to me?"  She shook her head not believing the woman's logic.  To the others in the room, she pointed this out.  "So she was quick to point the finger at me for using my argument and logic against Haibane, but is that not exactly the same thing she is doing to me?  It is ok for her to do that to me.....but yet the fact that I did it against the Lady Haibane makes me a rebel?  By her own logic, that would make her one as well would it not?"
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
sinera
"I hold secret council with no one. Amberghylles has already admitted that the two of you have held congress behind the backs of us all." She narrowed her eyes. "Did he put you up to accusing Lady Haibane? Is it in fact he who is the rebel, and you are just his willing pawn?" She leaned closer.
"Tell us, Mithlomwen, is Amberghylles true to Her Majesty? Or are you both rebels? How are we to know? All I know is you were the first to accuse Lady Haibane, and she was proved innocent. That doesn't necessarily make you a rebel, but your actions otherwise are suspicious.
"Like I said, convince me that you aren't a rebel and I'll change my vote. So far all you've done is attack me because I voted for you."
"And all you have done is attack me because I pointed out the suspicious nature of Lady Haibane.  I know not who the rebels are, all I can do is place my vote on those that seem the most suspicious to me.  Just as you are doing being suspicious of me.  I will guarantee you that I am no rebel.  As for me conferring with Amberghylles, I would ask you to stop and think of those that are conferring with others but are not saying so.  There are most likely underhanded deeds going on behind the scenes that no one knows of.  At least we two have been open and upfront with the fact that we have discussed who we believe the rebels might be."  She paused and sat back down again looking at sinera and cocking her head.  "What say you to that my lady?
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
sinera
"I have to ask you what it is that I have done to make myself suspicious. All I have done is vote for LadySky to become regent, fuss at Winterborn, Ryven and Aiden for being supercilious gits and support Lady Haibane when she was being attacked. I did vote against Ryven last round, but truthfully, that was because I didn't know who else to vote for and (though I'm embarrassed to admit it) didn't want to be responsible for the death of someone and find out they were an innocent.
"Why have I changed my mind this round? Because Haibane's final words weigh heavy on my heart. Because too many of us loyal to Her Majesty have died. If we lose but four more loyal councilors, then the rebels will outnumber us."
"Fear," she continued. "Fear is what drives us to what we do. I'm afraid that the rebels will continue to winnow us down until only they remain; once that happens, Her Majesty's life is at risk. If my death is necessary to protect her, I lay my life down gladly, though not without a bit of fear. Can you say the same?"
Imogen
Imogen paled at Sinera's words and looked over those present with fear filled eyes. She bowed her head and clutched her rosary between her fingers. "My dear Sinera..." She said softly. "It is no use, my friend. Have you not yet noticed that those who saw Haibane to her doom have now banded together to send you to the henchmen's block?"
"I cannot believe that the Elandra, Caeli, Mithlomwen and Amberghylles - after their misguided judging of lady Haibane - now make the same mistake with pure and innocent hearts. And yes, I do include Lord Amberghylles in this, as i would be highly surprised if he were not waiting to cast his ballot and subject you to the final judgment of our good Lord."
"All I can do..again..is to plead with those of good conscience to make a difference, and cast their vote - change it, if need be - so those whose voices send Haibane to her grave will not take another victim."
Her eyes blazed with religious zeal as she looked over those gathered, before she allowed her eyes to drop back to the wooden beads and count another prayer on the endless string.
Mithlomwen
Mithlomwen looked at Imogen and shook her head, "I am no rebel lady, and should I die at my my fellow counselors hands, you will see that I am in fact speaking the truth, and then your theory of why I spoke out against the Lady Haibane will hold no salt.  What will you do then?  You are so convinced that I am in league with the rebels, or that I am a rebel, what then will you do when that fact is proven to be false and I am shown to be as innocent as you?"
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
Imogen
She swallowed and bowed her head a little deeper, a little frown creasing her brow. "My lady Mithlomwen, you are in a most dire position. Guilt and innocence are not decided by us, but by the good Lord himself, and us, mortals, is left the hard task to find those with ill intent without His wisdom. I pray that He shall guide us to a decision that is just and righteous."
"I am well aware that asking you to lower your voice in respect of your earlier misjudgment may well seal your doom,guilty or innocent, and thus I cannot ask you to change your words."
She now turned her gaze to Mithlomwen. "But it is with all my heart that I pray you are innocent, milady. I am convinced that at least one of you is true to her words. And it tears me apart to see us all so torn. Had not one of you been honest and wise, there would not have been an argument. But there is always a chance, that you both are true supporters of her Highness... and if this should be so, my heart grieves for the rift between her loyal subjects."
Mithlomwen
Mith studied sinera for a moment, trying to discern if she was in fact telling the truth.  "Fine, my lady, perhaps you are indeed telling the truth and you are as innocent as I am."  She thought for a long moment, trying to recall the events of the day and what was said about whom, and who might possibly be responsible for the deaths of innocents.  "As a show of good faith between us, I will change my vote to that of Lord Aiden and take the advice of Lady Sky and Lord Winterborn in hopes that they by some chance have knowledge of his guilt."
Mithlomwen could only hope that her show of good faith would convince others that she was in fact innocent and change their votes as well or she was truly done for and would be joining the other innocents slain by the rebels.
Baby, it's all I know,
sinera nodded. "I agree, my Lady. If we do not stop this strife between the two of us, then those truly responsible for the deaths of our kinsmen (and women) win. As you have changed your vote from me, I shall also change my vote to Aiden.
"I hope that we are not mistaken; there are so few of us left to support Her Majesty."
She sighed and prayed that Aiden was indeed one of the rebels. Otherwise she'd likely sent an innocent (though thoroughly annoying) man to his death.
Lord Amberghylles looked up from where he had been watching the debate with a tired and stoic expression.  "It grieves me to see such venom and strife among this court.  Truly, what manner of example do we set when we, who should be the best of the kingdom, squabble and bicker like unruly children.  It is with a heavy heart that I say I do not know who pleads true and who lies.  But I find that Lord Aiden's theatrics and behaviour have been without doubt unseemly and uncouth, though I wish I had more certain proof of his villainy before I point my finger at him in accusation, I must make the most informed choice that i can."
Suspicion fell overwhelmingly on Aiden, his haughty insistence on his own innocence only seeming to turn the others still more firmly against him.  Once more the headsman performed his grisly duty, while the ever-shrinking group watching uneasily.
But there was to be no relief or rejoicing, at least not for the innocent.  For this day, their Healer had died, and left them with one less chance of salvation from the rebels.
LadySky
LadySky watched silently as the worst occurred and she refused to look away from the grizzly death of an innocent. She had pointed a finger to him from the beginning and now his death weighed heavily on her shoulders. As she went about performing the duties of her position LadySky felt chilled within, a cold hollow ache building in her chest. Once more she locked herself away not to sleep or rest however, LadySky spent the night hours on her knees, praying for guidance and aide in the coming days.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.
Although law lay the requirement that all the court show watch the condemned betaken to the gallows.  Xandi struggled for strength. She is saying prayer as Lord Aiden is walked past her and the speed and intensity of those prayer until the ax has done its job and Aidens identity if revealed, The Healer.
Xandis face grows pale and her legs week as she says, "my lord what have we done," She sits on the edges and smells her smelling sauce to keep from fainting. Once she is confident she will  not faint she rises and is escorted back to her room where the royal ceremonies for the dead will begin. As she begins the traditional ceremony in blackness there is a knock on her door, who she hope is her friend country to check on her, she could use some company to perform the ceremony.
“Lady Xandi.  Please pardon my intrusion in your quarters.  I have been sorely distressed by the events in the court and sought counsel with the Holy Fathers.”
“I have been remiss in not returning your glove sooner.  It has lain next to my heart since you bestowed your gift to me.  Your gift, through the medium of your glove, filled me with inspiration and I trust my efforts at the games were worthy of your confidences.”
“I know that you will be much troubled by recent events and made haste to your quarters, thinking to comfort you.”
Mithlomwen
Mithlomwen was completely shattered when her vote had turned out to be the wrong one.  A thousand doubts ran through her head, wondering who the Rebels were.  She had changed her vote as a token of good faith to prove she was innocent,  and had as a result aided in the death of another innocent.
Something haunts the dark halls of the castle, whether spirit, flesh and blood, or both; and on this night, whatever forces are at work are doubly busy.  With the dawn, two fresh deaths are discovered.  First, the Lady Imogen, a loyal Councilor, slain by the dastardly rebels.
The second shocking death is that of LadySky, the one who had been duly elected as Regent -- now revealed to be a conniving Rebel herself.  A small bottle nearby, with the strong whiff of poison lingering, bore mute testimony as to the manner of her death.
The Alchemist's potion, it seemed, had been used wisely.
Moirae exhaled quietly as she hovered briefly in LadySky's doorway, the key slipped back at into the pocket hidden in the folds of her black gown.  Seeing the thorns brought ease and comfort to her heart and soiled hands; only then had her heart stopped thudding so wildly against her chest.
One down, six to go.
Returning to the meeting chamber, she sent for Lady Imogen's body to be prepared for burial.  LadySky's could burn for all she cared, her proper death had already been handled.  Easing down into her favored chair, she said to any of those already gathered, "I vote for the Alchemist as Regent."
Lady Xandi is relieved to find her friend Country at her door. He had come to comfort her, although it was improper for a gentleman and a  lady to be alone, they spent the night completing the ceremony to commemorate their dead.
At first light Xandi heard the tale of how Imogen had been slain. She was surprised to hear how LadySky had fooled them all, as regent she was the last one suspected of being a rebel. Today another dawn has arisen and now two more lay dead. This time however at least the Rebels were hit by the passing of LadySky. Xandi prayed for the dead loyal councilors and for the strength to find the rebels and see them all hanged.
sinera
'twas growing to be too much. sinera spent the day weeping for Aiden, for her own part in his death; then to be struck the next day by twin arrows - the death of Imogen at the hands of the rebels, and then to hear that not only had LadySky died at the hands of the Alchemist, but that she was a rebel as well? It boggled the mind.
She gathered with the others in the hall; the smell of food was enough to make one gag, but she wanted what scarce comfort she could get from being around others.
"I would vote for the Alchemist, if I but knew who that was, my lady. Since I do not, I propose that we elect Mithlomwen as the new regent. She has convinced me of her innocence, and by this word I stand."
Why does the alchemist not reveal themselves?  There is nothing more for them to hide.  The deed is done.  If we know who it was, we could elect him or her as regent.
country
Country slipped quietly from Lady Xandi’s chambers.  He glanced furtively about, concerned lest his presence in her chambers be noted by others and thus bring disrespect and shame to the fair lady’s name.
In light of the activities of the past evening, he expected to find the hall bustling with members of the court as they met furtively to compare stories, listen to rumours and discuss the events.
Instead, everything was quiet.  Few of the other Lords and Ladies seemed to have emerged from their quarters.  Was everyone cowering in fear?  Errors of judgement had been made.  Advice from the Holy Fathers seemed to fail.  Were they not the seat of all knowledge? A careful choice of a new Regent was essential and yet few seemed prepared to make that choice.
Should I propose Lady Xandi?  Would that choice be too obviously made because of my inflamed passion?
Autumn52
When the voting for a new regent began Lady Xandi was consumed with the loss of so many friends. She finally lifted her cup and said, I think Country would make a fine regent. He is a man of worth and he was trustworthy.
Lady Xandi hoped he got the position, she thought he would do a fine job and the crown would gain another asset.
WInterborn, haggard and looking distinctly unwell, sat at the council only after being rousted from his chambers forcibly. His eyes were dark, his demeanor unresponsive, and he had not shaved for some time. When the time came, he waited quite a while before speaking up, his voice a hoarse, despondent murmur.
"I will cast my vote with the majority, as I am forced to cast it at all. Were it my choice, I would not support any of you without cause to trust."
Teno
"Well, everyone here killed off the one other person I felt I could trust, which means I would have to cast it to someone I would rather not. Therefore, I vote myself, Teno for regent and hope that Moirae would be worthy of your choice."
With that, he sat back down, eyes scanning each person to see whether there were anyone there he felt to be trustworthy.
Mithlomwen
Mithlomwen glanced around, in shock that the Lady Sky had turned out to be one of the rebels.  Still not knowing who the rebels might be, she decided to vote for the one person that she knew was not.  "I vote for the lady Caeli to be our newest regent."
SleepyWei
Sleepywei grunted at the quick turn of events. It left a bittersweet taste in his mouth to know that the scoundrel did not become regent with his vote. But with her death, a new temporary ruler was needed and he loathed to actually vote for anyone again. He stood by his first proclamation and did not see anyone, not even himself, as a fit ruler.
But again, a vote was needed.
The lord absently waved his arms in a circular motion, to convey his willingness to get things over with. "Well it clearly doesn't matter who I'd vote for now due to such a majority but why not? I'll cast my vote to Moirae as well."
With a new Regent chosen, the business of the day must now continue.  Though shaken by the proof of LadySky's treachery, the loyal nobles gathered there still had a kingdom to govern, and a Queen to protect.  Thus far, they had not yet managed to execute a Rebel -- at least not through official means -- and this time, they would have to choose wisely.
The voting finished, Moirae lightly dabbed the corners of her mouth with her napkin before settling her gaze upon that of Lord Winterborn.  "I vote for you, Lord Winterborn.  To state what everyone else is already likely thinking, you, Lord Teno and Lord Country are both the next suspects, as well as Lady Sinera.  You each voted for Lady Sky, and while as did myself and Lady Haibane, our votes were not cast with treachery in mind.  Mine and Lady Haibane's votes were merely cherries on top.
"That also leaves you, Lady Xandi, is an unfortunate position.  Inflamed passions?  Possibly.  Two Rebels creating cover stories?  More likely.  So that lists five strong candidates and one still in hiding."  Her eyes briefly scanned over Lady Elandra.  "Of course, I could be shooting in the dark, but my gut feeling and mulled over suspicions tell me I'm not likely wrong.  After all, it were those same feelings that lead to Lady Sky's fortunate death.  Yes, I am the alchemist, and you all, you filthy Rebels, bloody well be happy I don't have more poison or I'd damn us all to hell before seeing our young Queen left to such soiled and treasonous hands."
"Wait, how did I get thrown in with the rebels? I've been nothing but loyal. Sure I voted for LadySky as Regent, but as you said, so did you. And I had no idea of her nature, else I would have voted elsewhere. Unlike you, who seems to think they have everything worked out, I don't know anyone here who I can trust. And not to mention this wouldn't be the first time the rebels had got their own into the role of regent. Save what I've already said, the only other thing I can be sure of at the moment is that Mith is top of my list of suspects. She started the vote against Haibane, and switched her vote under the guise of trust to the healer. But then, I come back to you, who seems to have pulled quite the list yet you claim to be the alchemist? Torn as I am, I can't help but think the vote has gone wrong yet again. That is why I choose to place my vote with you, Moirae."
The corner of her mouth quirked at Teno's words.
"I never said I had it all figured out.  I believe I mentioned candidates and suspicions... and the lack of doubt in those feelings.  It is my pleasure to say that Lady Sky begged, in her final moments before the light left her eyes.  I don't enjoy witnessing death, but that of any Rebel's is an exception.  I have all manners of proving I am who I say, beginning with not having left Lady Sky's chambers until this morning, the empty vial in my pocket, and welcoming you to take a tour of my private chambers.  Perhaps, by some measure of luck, I can find the ingredients for a second potion while we're there and save the Councilors the trouble of an additional vote."
Moraie.  You chose well when you selected LadySky and I too will follow your lead with Winterborn .
Winterborn
Standing from his chair at the council, Winterborn looked around at his peers with a calm, almost apathetic expression. Someone had run a razor over his face, and he seemed to have slept the night before, at least shortly. "Before the headsman earns his boots, let me recall this to ye all. I voted with the majority, as I was unsure of the ways of this court. You all know that I am but a lad compared to the rest of the council, but I have learned much during my short days here." Lifting his greatsword by the leather belt secured to the sheath, he set it on the table and pushed it away.
"I'll have done with this fightin' and backstabbin'. These politics are no place for me, and all I've done since rising to these lofty heights is make things worse. If ye want me gone, I'll go. Straight back to Aber, and ne'er return ta' court. If it's traitor ye call me, I'll walk myself down ta' the block and set my chin on top, without chains or a sword at my back. My service is to Her Majesty first, my people second, and m'self last. None of you has a hold on me of fealty or debt, nor does any man or woman I haven't mentioned." Again, he cast his eyes over them in a look that was far different from the wary enthusiasm of just a few days before.
"I am no rebel. I have no ambition but to serve mine estate and the people bound to me, and I to them. If it's my head the council wants, fine. There'll be one less man among you who gives a damn about Her Majesty's well-being." He sat again, looking drained. "Make your choice. Live or dead, you'll have done with me."
SleepyWei
I must agree with Caeli, there is definitely something suspicious about Mithlomwen.
Okay, let's see if we can shake things loose somehow.
If everyone still interested in playing (who's also still alive) could either message me or post here, as appropriate, then I can at least figure out if there's enough interest to keep going.  If necessary, we can talk about resetting, replacing/removing people, whatever.  But it isn't fair to those who do want to continue to leave things hanging like this, so please, everyone get back to me as soon as possible.  Thanks.
Ryven
I am definitely interested.  I'm guessing the holidays have thrown a wrench in the gears of the game, so it has died down a lot.
Autumn52
I am still interested as well....I love these games and I want to continue whether that means resetting, restarting or whatever. Count me In...
Maintaining his innocence to the last, Winterborn went to his death with his head held high.  Only when his head no longer rested on his shoulders did the assembled group realize that once more, a loyal Councilor had died at their hands.
Ryven
My suspicions were correct.   Winterborn was not a rebel.
Valerian
The next day, the saddened little group found themselves once more reduced by one.  The Lady Ket lay dead in her room, a victim of the rebels' swords.  Another Councilor was lost, sent to join the other spirits roaming the halls of the castle.
Ryven
This is clearly the work of Mithlomwen.
Autumn52
Lord Ryven was correct last time. Perhaps he knows something we don't. I think we should vote with him. My vote is for Mithlomwen.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.
country
Now I'm terribly confused.  Moirae seemed to have the inside track but let us badly astray; so that we lost another loyal subject.   Ryven had positive information on Caeli but he now comes out against Mith.  I wonder Ryven if you are not trying to distract us away from you?  For now I'll follow your lead.
Mithlomwen
Amberghylles
Moirae claims to be the alchemist who struck down Ladysky, but her second choice of victim proved disastrously wrong.  I will follow Lord Ryven's lead as well since he was canny enough to avoid being mislead by the regent.  I vote for Mithlomwen as well.
Mithlomwen
Mith sat aghast as everyone suddenly turned on her.  "I had nothing to do with these deaths."  She protested, but deep down knowing it would do no good.  It seemed as if everyone had already made up their minds.  "I warn you, killing me will only be playing into the Rebel's hands, and with so few counselors left, it will spell our doom for sure.
Glancing around the room, she looked confused and frightened, not knowing who to cast her vote against.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
Ryven
At this point, you've swayed me twice to change my vote away from you, and each time a councilor has lost their life.  No more will I make that mistake.  At this point, if you are a councilor, I don't think it will much matter, but since Ket voted for you last time and is now dead and proven to be innocent, I will trust her instinct.
Mithlomwen
Fine, if my death is the only way to prove my innocence, then so be it.  I will gladly go to my grave knowing that I have always been loyal to our beloved Queen.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
Teno
I said just a few days ago my suspicions were with you Mith, and only now after we lose a great number of loyal people do people listen. But late is better than never, and I am glad to see you finally receive that which you deserve.
Mith looked around to the others and pointed to Caeli.  "Does no one see the deception here?  Caeli announced herself as the Weaponsmaster early on in the game....and I have reason to believe she is not telling us the truth.  I believe it is in fact HER that has something to hide, not myself."
Baby, it's all I know,
SleepyWei
"I agree with the majority. Perhaps Mithlomwen indeed has something to hide?"
Ryven
This majority of votes is causing me to think otherwise.  Either Mith is not a rebel or the rebels are willing to sacrifice one of their own.
Caeli
Caeli raised an eyebrow. "I did not such thing, unless being the Guildmaster of the Weaponsmith's guild has recently become the qualification for being the weaponsmaster. I am but a loyal Councilor, and more and more your words lead me to believe that you've something to hide."
Mithlomwen
Looking at Ryven she nodded her head and shrugged her shoulders.  "I keep trying to tell you that I am no rebel, but no one will believe me.  So when you all wrongly send me to the gallows, and it is proven that I am merely one of the Queen's loyal subjects, you will be bringing the rebels one step closer to victory."
She turned her head away from the rest of the group, growing silent now as she figured no argument would sway them otherwise.  They were all convinced that she was a rebel, so only her death was going to prove to them that she was not.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...
Ryven
It appears I can trust no one.  If there is but one certainty in this entire endeavor, it is uncertainty.
sinera
sinera cannot but shake her head. "Mithlomwen convinced me early on that she was not a rebel, though I do find it interesting that all her other allies have abandoned her. However, even though my vote isn't going to make a difference, I yield to the majority. For what it's worth, I am sorry, Mith."
Mithlomwen quietly but firmly protested her innocence, but all her arguments were for nothing.  She was taken to the block, where so many of her compatriots had lost their lives, and joined them in death with one swift blow of the headsman's axe.  Another Councilor was gone.
Now their numbers were too few to shield their young Queen from the Rebels.  They moved openly now, seizing the throne and putting their own ruler in the Queen's place -- a cousin of hers, a wild young man, known to be far more interested in ladies than in ruling the land.  But he was willing to let the remaining rebels guide him, and with their powerful backing, none dared to oppose the new ruler too openly.
In the strictest secrecy, however, just before all was lost, those few loyal councilors that remained spirited the Queen away to safety in a distant land.  Perhaps, someday, she might reclaim the throne that was rightfully hers...
That last night was just awful, you were so close.  The Rebels were debating back and forth between Ket and you; and just after you decided to guard yourself that night, they settled on Ket.  I felt the frustration on your behalf.  :(
