What do you guys think of self-inserts, or yourself as a character in whatever your playing or writing. Do you think it's weird and off limits, or something interesting. Have you done this, or thought about doing this?

I myself have thought of doing it, seems it may be fun.

A lot of people that I've seen on this topic had this connotation(I think I'm using that word wrong) that it would be hard to separate the real you from the story you. It's weird or a little arrogant maybe, some have passed it off as Mary Sues/Gary Stus and I wonder if that's the case. Some have even reported possessive tendencies (I'm assuming going back to the inability differentiate a game and reality) This is not a response to a question I asked but just me stumbling on to a thread in another site.

What are your thoughts on making yourself as a character? Or even someone else doing the same.

I would not be able to roleplay myself as a character. For me, it's too much blur between in-character and out-of-character. I like my characters to remain very separate from me. I don't necessarily assume people who play self-inserts are creepy. I think people approach RP in very different ways, and I'm not going to fault them for that. There are undoubtedly some people who roleplay self-inserts that can maintain that IC/OOC distinction, but unfortunately in my personal experiences, the grand majority I have encountered have been unable to do that, leading to problems.

I would assume someone that asked me to is rather creepy. I also would probably not roleplay with someone RPing a self-insert; again, for me it blurs things too much, and I like a clear distinction between IC and OOC.

I don't really view it as a Gary Stu/Mary Sue sort of thing at all; just like any other character, a self-insert could easily be evaluated like any other fictional character to see if Stu/Sue-ishness abounds.

Again, to each their own. That's just my two cents on it.

I couldn't do that myself, and I do not even want to.  I am completely detatched from my characters, and I expect the same from a writing partner. Personally, I think IC/OOC blur is very creepy, but as long as people are not doing it in a story with me, I couldn't care less.

My characters have... very little in common with myself, and I wouldn't ever want to be them in any shape or form.

As Sherlock said, each to their own.

It's always obvious and lame. There's nothing wrong with being self indulgent in what you write just don't expect anyone else to react with anything nicer than an eye roll.

A lot would depend on your partner(s) in the story and what exactly you want from it.  Some people I've spoken with in the past saw it as the other person wanting to use them for cyber sex if the scenes got intimate.  Others kind of like the idea.  Roleplaying is acting of one sort or another and when done in story form can still lead to an emotional and mental connection between people even if no physical contact occurs.  It takes a lot of work and a strong personal character to avoid falling into the possessiveness trap where you see more than just a story being written.  I'd take it slowly from the start, be completely open and honest with your potential partner, accept it when someone turns you down, and make sure you are okay with them warning you about getting too close if they do choose to write with you.  Be prepared to end it if you find yourself getting possessive in any way.

Considering how hard it is to maintain distance and objectivity for some people I wouldn't try to do it or write with someone who wanted to.  Also, keep in mind that your partner and not you will also be in danger of becoming possessive.

I think in all my time writing RP on here and other RP sites, I've self-inserted once, here, in the red-light district, where it is much more common than any of the larger RP forums.  It was a specific scene, the other writer self-inserted herself as well, and we had fun with it.  It eventually ended, we moved on to another RP with fully fictional characters, and so it went.

I don't have any desire to write myself as a character in any kind of extended material.  There are too many fictional characters I have written, enjoyed, and would like to place in another RP to use myself.

Thank you for the answers ^_^
I know where would be no way I could do it in sexual scenes, so I'm with you guys on that notion.

Idk Maybe Im the weird one, but I wouldn't be opposed to it. Well of course in a Non-sexual play, but then again I practically live in my own head, So I'm used to distinction Fact and Fiction.
