D&D 5th edition for beginners!

Part of the reason I'm looking for a game is to better understand D&D 5e's mechanics.  I'm not sure a "D&D type game" will do that.

Edit: It sounds like you're playing something similar to D&D, but not D&D.  I don't think that's what I'm looking for right now.

Crap sorry, meant to just say D&D period, but it might end up set either in the Forgotten Realms, or the world of Exabdria as seen in Critical Role is probably why I said that the way I did.   :-[  It'd be D&D regardless of the setting though, so don't be worried on that front.  :D

What makes you say that?  The world might be something other than the land of Toril, better known as the Forgotten Realms, or the world created by Matthew Mercer, that of Exandria as seen in the web series Critical Role, but the system I plan to use would still be D&D 5th edition.  The only thing currently in the air is the setting itself, and I'm willing to do either of them.

I'm guessing it's a bit too late for me to jump in on this?  I've wanted to play some more D&D to better understand the game(as I only played once, and I don't actually count that).  As it is, I have been reading the core books, and have already gotten through the PHB (ik, I am insane) so I should have some idea of how to play, but I would like to have a more firsthand understanding.

Unfortunately the project flopped; i think I bit off more than I could chew with three groups. Well, it was supposed to be an expeirement. Thank you for the interest though! I might try again in the future, perhaps with a smaller scale and actually doing character creation with people, so there's a bit more grounding in the characters?
