When I Think of You

The romantic in me wants to remember
All the good times we had,
All the laughter and all the fun,
The gentle quiet moments spent in each other’s arms.

But that’s not what I remember.
I remember the inexplicable tears,
I remember that you never believed in me.
I remember begging just to get you to look at me.

I remember being scared all the time.
I remember feeling so alone.
You may have loved me,
But you never supported me.

You never stood behind me.
When things got tough, you always wanted to run.
Pack up and leave.
Fuck everyone.

You couldn’t understand that I can’t do that.
My life meant something to me,
My family, my friends,
They’re not objects, they’re people.
You can’t just go to the store and buy new ones.

I wanted to make a life for us.
I wanted to have a family and be happy.
I wanted you to be a part of that.
But you wanted to go.

Okay, I’ll live.
But don’t think you didn’t hurt me.
Don’t think that it still doesn’t hurt.

It took me a long time to love in the first place,
And it’ll take even longer for me to love again.

I liked it! Not sure if all the attention given to "me" in the poem is slightly in tension with the accusation that the other was selfish? I suppose the speaker is asserting the self because it lacked attention, but it's not clear from the poem that the speaker is any less guilty than the accused, and there is evidence that they are potentially guilty.

That's a very interesting way of looking at it. When I wrote it, the speaker was myself and you're very correct in that I am the one leveling the accusation of selfishness without really taking a look at myself. The reason for this is that it is, for me, a piece about my emotions. It's not meant to be an objective look at the relationship. If one was to ask her, I'm sure she would have a vastly different outlook than I do.
