I didn't see a topic like this already, but I think this deserves to be one, and should get lots of attention. I know things have been upping the ante every year but even before 2000, there were still a remarkable number of them.

So I propose that everyone nominate scenes from film, television, and animation and we divide things up into categories to make things interesting. We can vote and I'll keep track of the tallies and such. I have a few categories in mind but I'm open to suggestions too. Here's what I can come up with so far:

One-on-One fights (Main Category)
(Sub-Categories)
Best Sword Fight (both parties must be using a blade)
Best Original Weapon Fight (something that is obviously a weapon but is too elaborately ornate or would otherwise be impractical in real life)
Best Improvised Weapon Fight (even if only one party is using an improvised weapon)
Best Gunfight
Best Fight Involving Science Fiction Weapons (ray guns, lasers, light sabers, etc.)
Best Improvised Fighting Style Fight (if both parties are not at all versed in any martial art)
Best Disciplined Martial Arts Fight (both parties must be knowledgeable and skilled in at least one and using them actively)
Best Mismatched Partner Fight (where both parties' fighting styles are so incompatible it makes the fight more interesting)
Best Mismatched Character Fight (where both parties actual body types are so different it makes the fight more interesting)
Best Beatdown (where the fight is one-sided to the point of being humorous or painful to watch)
Best Sports-Related Fight (i.e. boxing, regulated MMA, etc., basically anything where it's an official event or has set rules)

Best Tag-Team Fights (Main Category) - i.e. any fight involving two to four partners against a single adversary

Best Free-For-All Fights (Main Category) - i.e. nobody is on anybody's side, 3 or more parties involved minimum

Best Small Team Fights (Main Category) - i.e. at least two two-member teams fighting (whether they're having their own separate fights simultaneously in the same area or are helping each other)

Best Large Group Fights (Main Category) - i.e. something like we'd see in the Lord of the Rings finale where entire armies are scrapping

I think that's about all I can come up with for now. I would like to suggest a few other sub-categories that may not conflict with the type of fights being nominated:
Best Scene Shot Without the Aid of Computer Graphics
Best Use of Practical Special Effects in a Fight
Best Use of CGI in a Fight
Best Eastern Animation Fight
Best Western Animation Fight
Best Fight of the Decade
Best Fight While Mobile/On a Moving Vehicle or Other Object

Wow, this is more complicated than I thought. I'll wait for some responses before I do any more. I'll reserve the second post for voting and such. If making a submission, please provide a youtube or other link if possible, otherwise just describe it as best you can (probably won't be much of a problem, though.)

I'll save some space here for voting and such if this really takes off.

Not entirely sure ware this would fall but this is probably one of my favorite fight scenes, or one of but Hero and Crouching Tiger and Hidden dragon have a lot of them. But then again i kind of grew up on Hongkong Action flicks

Yeah, we'll figure that out later. That fight is probably going to need a 'mixed weapon' category for it.

I'm going to throw this one in before anyone else thinks to (or am I just too esoteric and nobody would have thought of this one?)

The "Old Boy" reference is pretty obvious, but it stands up well as its own thing. Daredevil vs. the Russian mob:

Note to self: never attack Daredevil in a hallway.

Starts out hand-to-hand, ends with some nice knife work. Best fight scene in movie history, IMHO.

I have to admit I couldn't help thinking, "Dude, you had two karambits from the get go. Why didn't you slash him to death right off the bat?"

Deamonbane

Earlier on in the film, the Assassin beats Rama pretty easily. He starts out playing with Rama because of that, and once he realizes that he's losing, he tries to use the karambits.

Pound for pound, I think no movie has better fight scenes (or the number of major ones) than Kung Fu Hustle.

First fight: One vs. Army, becomes 3 vs. Army

Second Fight: Unconventional Weapons and Tag-Teaming

Third Fight: Two on one, still outmatched

And the Finale, one vs. small army and the confrontation between two grand masters:

Kung Fu Hustle is basically sort of a parody of the whole martial arts Kunk Fu genre of like the 70-late 80 kind of still really but for me thats more the sweet spot

If you're searching the lines for a point, well you've probably missed it; there was never anything there in the first place.

The thing i love most about John Wick is the sense of gravity thats given to him before he ever dos anything. The film dos a really excellent job of building it up.

For best gun-fu.

Then we have Shoot 'em up, which does for gunplay what Kung Fu Hustle does for the martial arts. The violence is so gloriously over the top it can best be described as Bugs Bunny with a machine gun  XD

My favorite one on one will always be Bruce Lee Vs. Chuck Norris in Return of the Dragon.

Then there's the long stair scene in Tony Jaa's "The Protector"

Once Upon a Time in Shanghai is a film I enjoy as well... But as a honorable mention...

An underrated movie and one of my favorites, the fight scene is not flashy but i always liked it.

Not sure where this would fit in, but the mannequin fight scene in Kubrick's Killer's Kiss deserves an honorary mention. Very interesting concept and a cool showdown - the two men have been fighting over the same woman even before they met in person.

The story of the movie is a fairly standard B-movie drama, but its real star is the photography. Kubrick was a photo man before he became a filmmaker and the footage in this film keeps tossing up exciting, skillfully executed and dramatic shots - and much of it was done in real-life mid-fifties Manhattan settings, not in the studio, so it gains a really documentary feel.

I can't find the exact clip on youtube, but there is a bombastic army vs. army scene, and one-vs-one mixed in, at the finale of Dead Snow 2: Red Vs. Dead. So. Fucking. Awesome. If you have Netflix, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Best beat down fight? I am going with Tex vs the Reds and Blues in Season 8 of RvB.

For best western animation fight? Its kind of a tie for me.

the first being Samurai Jack's fight with the Shinobi Shadow Warrior. The creator show broke up the usual tradition of animation fights having dialogue in between. Instead he used fast action and let the fights do the talking instead. This fight here is over ten years old and it has aged phenomenally.

Now as for the second well its this one from RWBY. Its late creator Monty Oum enjoyed doing over the top and fast action and it was something that has become a trademark necessity with this show. Plus with weapons that can switch from melee to firearms makes it even more awesome to watch.

I know it's all of 30 seconds, but the Jack Daniels bottle scene from Punisher: Dirty Laundry has to go up somewhere.

Did think of some more but really couldn't decide between The Mountain vs. Oberyn and Brienne Vs. The Hound.... I went with the Viper Vs. The Mountain due to Arya being in the other scene. The clip does have some dialog in the beginning...

Animation wise I really enjoy Hei Vs. The Contractors in the Darker Than Black 4th OVA

Then you have the scene in Jin-Roh when he hunts down Public Security in the sewers. Also the greatest line ever...
