Speakeasy - Guys and Dolls of New York is a game that turns back the clock, to those times with flair, style and class. Those times when Jazz was hip. The prohibition era made Speakeasies the big new thing. So pull up a stool and pass the gin. Grab a guy or doll of your choosing and hit the floor while the music plays loud and plays proud! Just be careful, and lets hope the coppers don't show up and raid the joint!

Welcome to 1921 and a game full of intrigue and suspense.

We are looking for serious, dedicated players.

-Important Disclaimer-

We all want to have a good time and write awesome stories. But there are certain things that are simply not done. Not only because they violate Elliquiy's rules, but they also destroy the integrity of a group, they cause unnecessary grief and frustration (and writing should be fun), and this should not happen among responsible adults.

We are writing fiction here, let's not forget that. Considered the era this game is set in, things like homophobia, racism, violence, strong language, women being seen as weak and helpless dolls, etc. might and probably will happen. If any of this bothers you, please, do not join. We will not listen to whining about a fictional setting, with fictional characters and fictional happenings. Because this is, quite frankly, bullshit. Yes, all this is bad in real life, there is no doubt, but causing drama over fiction is pretty irrational. If it is not your thing - just don't join.

This group will accept cross-gender writers. If this is a problem for you, we're sorry but we are not going to limit our writers in this regard. There is nothing wrong with not liking it, but here, in this group, the gender identity/badge/sex of a writer is irrelevant.

Another important thing to remember is that the Group OOC thread is not the place to whine or rant. Yes, RL can be a pain the ass, we all know that, but - Elliquiy offers threads for such, please use them. :-)

Please read these rules in their entirety. There will be no excuses later, should you not agree with them. There will be no "I did not see that", while it is written here where it may be referred back to and referenced to at any point.

All of Elliquiy's Rules apply here. This is another thing that should be minded at all times.

Your GMs will be MaverickKane and Nicholas. (if you contact a GM, please make sure to send a copy to the other GM as well. It makes our work a lot easier, if we both know about stuff.) We are always here to help out, or to settle disputes. We are no babysitters, though. We have the last word. Argueing will only get you banned from the group. If anything, we decide for the well-being of the group. Argueing or nitpicking wastes time and creates an atmosphere we will not have.)

Respect of your fellow writers goes without saying. What goes around, comes around. We all want to enjoy a good story, without having to deal with unpleasantries.

For gods sake - Leave your drama at the door. Any kind of out-of-character dispute will be dealt with in PM or wherever else privately. It will not be dealt with on the boards. Just.. don't. Conflict can happen, but we expect that those are dealt with in a mature manner. Please mind your fellow writers and do not drag people into a conflict and please keep in mind that airing dirty laundry (even veiled) is a rule violation that will be dealt with accordingly. Thank you. :-)

Literacy, a decent grasp of punctuation, capitalization and grammar are very appreciated. (Everyone makes typos, no doubt. Elliquiy has a built-in spellchecker, and it is not to much to ask you to make use of it. Needless to say, chat speak and emoticons in IC posts are a no-go)

Using pictures in your posts is perfectly alright (for a room maybe, some outdoor location, clothes, weapons, etc.) Using porn pictures isn't.

No one-liners!!

Communication is essential. We want to create good stories and plots (See the Plot Board here), we want character interaction, forming relationships or making enemies, etc. And this requires communication. Needless to say - IC and OOC will be kept separate. If we get the impression that someone cannot detach from their character(s), we will step in.

If a player drops from the game and leaves their character stuck in a scene, then that character will become an NPC until they can be removed from the scene by the GM(s) or another player.

God-moding, powergaming and using OOC knowledge IC is something we do not want to see here. It tends to ruin the fun for your fellow writers, and we will have to ask a writer to leave, should it occur.

The writing will only happen on the forum.

Players should post within 7-10 days of when it is their turn to reply. However, it's understandable if real life requires you to take longer. Just let us know in the Absence and OOC threads. Also, consider allowing whoever you're in a scene with to skip you, if you can't excuse your character with a quick post. If a player hasn't shown any sign of activity within the group in three weeks, their character(s) will be archived Here.

There will be no killing/maiming of someone else's character(s) without their consent.

This will not be a smut fest. For course, sex will probably happen, but this is not some porn setting. There is nothing wrong with smut, but there is a too much. If we see someone 'smut it up' all the time and do nothing of any substance, we will ask said person to do it elsewhere.

We will not tolerate bitchy, whiny, attention seeking or passive-aggressive attitudes in OOC. Behind each screen name is a real person with real feelings that can get hurt.

Posting only in third person, past tense.

No bestiality, no incest.

While Nicholas and MaverickKane enjoy recieving PM from and plotting with the members of the group, any requests, suggestions for in game content such as threads should be directed to our Requests Thread. Thank you.

Threads to pay attention to are the following:

Information - Everything you need to know about the game. A notice will be posted in the OOC & the New York Times threads when updates and changes occur. So pay attention.
Plotting - Plot out scenes with fellow players, let people know about your character.
New York Times - News regarding changes, announcements and news vital to the game, rumors, etc may be posted here. So look out for those.

Disrespect of another writers O/Os. They are there for a reason. Read them. There is no excuse to not read them. If you have no decent O/Os, you are in no place to complain, should someone violate them by accident. People cannot read minds. The Group GMs will not take any responsibility for violated O/Os when they are basically non existant.

Pulling IC drama OOC. - This simply is a deal breaker. This is not a Highschool Schoolyard. It is pretty silly to be jealous of things that happen IC. On the other hand - IC drama can be awesome!

Causing any drama OOC, dirty laundry, criticizing another writers style. We do not want any of this here.

Trying to control another writers character(s). Telling another writer what they have to do/not do with their character(s). Aka. Godmoding, powergaming, using OOC knowledge IC.

Trying to manipulate, guilt-trip, etc. another writer (it happens to you, please let the GM's know asap) or the GMs.

Inability to detach from a character(s). We see it happen, we stop it, at once. IC/OOC blur is pretty creepy.

If your actions (IC or OOC) disrupt the integrity and the climate of the group, you are out. This concerns mostly godmoding, powergaming, disrespect of another writers limits. You get the drift. ;)

In the end, it all boils down to - Common sense.

This means: Sex in public places, nudity in public places, waving guns around next to some cop (Not on the take) will get someone in trouble. Running ones mouth while being a member of the mob? Will have consequences if the wrong person hears. Ratting on people? Bad stuff might happen.  Starting a brawl? Your character(s) just might get hurt. Your character(s) maybe hitting a girl and someone sees? - you get the drift. Action = reaction.

Naturally so, we do not want to see mobile phones, laptops, computers, and everything else that was not invented in this era.

If you are in a scene with more than one other character, we suggest discussing a posting order with your fellow writers. This is no rule, mind you, just a suggestion we will leave to the individual.

Another thing that is worth mentioning:

Your character(s) gets injured? We do not want to see them the next day, right as rain. Nope. Scars don't heal overnight, bruises don't vanish magically, and broken bones are not healing in a week. Again, common sense.

Please do not forget that the characters are all human. Nobody will have any kind of superpowers, inhuman strength, being invincible, etc. If we catch someone on some crazy power or ego-trip, we'll stop it.

Now, having read the rules of the game And when submitting CS, we would like some confirmation you have in fact, read and understood them, you may be contemplating what sort of character would be be suited for this game, what we already have and what we are looking for?

Truth is, there is a wide variety of characters that would be possible for play. From bootleggers to one criminal organization or the other, gangsters, hustlers, women leaving their homes to work (Was not looked at well by most), there was heavy race issues, immigration, world war comes to a close (So men coming back home and trying to find their way back in to civilian society if they were soldiers or doctors, women too, who were nurses), you name it, it was happening. Easy to look up such things or get together with other players for ideas. Actually, this is expected. Writers coming up with their own ideas. There will be GM events, but we are not holding hands!

This being said, All information necissary for making a successful character and joining with Speakeasy is available on the thread linked, below. There is a lot of information, so take your time in reading through it all and we hope to see you in game, soon!

Nico

At this point we are accepting male and female characters.

Bloodied Porcelain Is Seeking:

Hi there! You might be looking for ideas and "ins" in to the game. I know it's expansive and it can be difficult to come up with someone you think will fit and not be too hard to get involved, so I thought I'd point out things I think the game could use (and that I personally could help people with in terms of getting involved)!

We could really use more Irish connected characters! The Irish were as big (and in many ways bigger) in terms of organized crime than any other group in the US in the 1920s. The Irish Mob was the first organized crime ring in the US period, and they both warred and joined forced with the Italians. I have a wealth of information on the Irish mob at the time (more than I do the Italians, oddly) and I have a character whose brother works for them, so I'd be happy to work out connections with folks. :)

I am also looking for a body guard (or four) for my mob princess Francesca Genovese-Marino. Her father is the boss of the Genovese Famiglia in Chicago, and she's married to Rosario Marino, an underboss in NYC. As such, she's constantly escorted by at least one bodyguard, very likely more than one under most circumstances. This role will have interaction with everyone from socialites to mob members. Ideally, the character would be connected to both the Genovese and Marino families, but just a connection to the Marinos is fine, as the Genovese family has been at war off and on for almost 20 years so they need most of their men at home.

Please feel free to PM me for either of these roles and I will be happy to discuss particulars with you. Just as a heads up, Nicholas is playing Rosario so you may be required to discuss the role with both he and I if you're interested in a body guard spot. :)
I want no ordinary lover. I want a storm. I want sleepless nights and endless conversations at four a.m. I want passion, I want madness.
I want someone who's able to make my whole body shiver from a distance and also pull me close to make sense of all my bones.

Oh yes, some Irish characters would be nice. ;D Could make for some great tension. ~nodnod~

Would be interested in this RP.  Would it be based around a particular speakeasy, a mob, a city??

I was thinking that a rum runner would be a good character.  I could even be Irish if I didn't have to type with an accent.   ;D

Actually, the city is New York, the Speakeasy is Hudson's Eight. If you click the information link, we have more information on that thread, including links to some of our threads. IC threads are currently linked on the first post of the OOC. And no, you wouldn't have to type with an accent if you didn't want to. We do have one bootlegger (Rum runner) already, but I think he's running for one of our Italians. I'd have to check with him and see.

As for what the game is centered around, it is a sandbox game centered around all of it, New york, (our speakeasy, hudson's eight) and the mob (to which there are currently three factions so to speak), but also just generally the 20's anything and everything you can think of. What you put in to the game, you will get out of it. Each player has contributed to this game in one way or another. We also have a request thread available for requests for characters as well as suggestions, ideas, etc. Link to the information thread is at the bottom of the first post of this thread in big teal letters. Just click on it. If you have more questions, etc, don't be afraid to ask!

Hey there! I'm currently the only Irish-affiliated person in the game, so I'd be happy to help you create an Irish rum runner (I assume that's what you want, and not a boot legger, since the Irish imported most of their stuff by boat instead of from places around the US). My character Aoife's brother was written to be a rum runner, but I ended up putting that character on hiatus so I could make a character with more interaction options, so we have that kind of role wide open! Please don't hesitate to contact me via PM or here in this thread if you have questions or anything. :)

Hello! :-)

Kane and BP really explained it all. :P

Bloodied Porcelain

I got smoke's sheet via PM last night but was rather distracted so didn't get a chance to really read it over so I could help him. Will get on that today. <3 Sorry for the delay, smoke!

He needs to send the sheet to Kane and me, though, for approval. :P

Yes but he's making him Irish and was looking for input since I'm the only person he could currently connect his character to. It's not finished yet. :p

I am interested in joining into the game, though after reading the Plaza, it'll be less of the thought of the character that came to mind without too much effort, so I have a couple questions now, to help me think up a character and make a sheet to submit.

1.) Is there a list of characters (I saw the positions, but I mean types of characters) that could be useful in the game? Or anyone that has an idea in mind for their character, if only there was "character B" to make it even remotely possible, that would like to talk with me about it?

2.) I've looked in the links (I was having a tab fest, with like 30 open, lol) and unless I missed it, I don't see a list of which characters have been put on archive/hiatus/no longer active. Is there a link for that, so that reading the approved character sheets, I know which ones I don't need to look at, for the moment, or would it say it on that character's sheet at the bottom or something, and I just haven't run into any that are archived yet?

I've read up the Plaza, the Game Room (no posts), most of the Back Room, and half of the Hudson Eight so far, to see who and where my character could be, but anyone is welcome to message me with an idea, or a character they would like to interact with.

First, what was the original character you had in mind? There might be an opening for it. Such as if it was bartender? There are in fact, openings. But I will answer your questions regardless.

1) We have a CS thread (There is a link in the rules as well as the information thread). Should find a link to it on the bottom of the Information Thread. Look at the characters and then there is the Plot thread (Link in the rules and on the information thread) to chat with other players and plot out things. We are about communication in this group. So the best thing to do is get talking with our players if your wanting to connect your character in that way to another character and we will need confirmation from that player (Character A) that you have their permission to play (Character B).

2) There is a link to the Inactive Characters in the Rules, actually. Up where it talks about  Players posting within 7-10 days. If it isn't linked anywhere else, well...it's because it isn't necessary and I am in the process of reworking our buttons.

I'm very intrigued, and playing a character connected with the Irish sounds like fun. :-) Will have an even closer look at all the threads tomorrow when I'm less tired (have been working on a home improvement project for a good part of the day, and I'm feeling the good kind of tired). But yeah, I'm hereby declaring my interest for joining this game. :-)

MaverickKane

Hello Yobo,

Good to hear your interest. Let us know if we can be of any assistance.

Hello!

Haha! I can imagine how tiring this is. I still remember when we renovated our apartment! :D

If you have questions or need something, just ask here in this thread or send up a PM, or both!

Unfortunately I have to withdraw my interest for this one. Yesterday I got accepted to university, and full-time studies as well as almost working full-time means my posting speed will get erratic, so group games are out of the question for the time being. I wish you all good luck in a very well thought-out game, and I hope you will have a lot of fun with it. :-)
