Yah its called people Catastrophizing everything. Its one case of a rather strange legal vague area, its not "The end is nye" its not a symptom of something looming its just a legal loophole one that i am almost sure will be addressed. Every so often you trip over one.

The bathroom bill nonsense becomes even more nonsensical when you consider some of the people who would if they would follow it need to go into bathrooms ware i am sure they would get some very confused looks.

In that region? "Confused looks" is the most mild and friendly reaction they're likely to receive, which is part of the problem.

Kentucky plans to remove a Confederate memorial to confederate soldiers form university grounds.

I...don't know how to feel about this.

I don't like the Confederacy and I know it can be uncomfortable having a memorial to those who fought for the slave owning side....but at the same time it feels like its ignoring history.

Yes some of them fought for slavery but some were fighting what they thought was oppression from the Northern states. Its been there for 120 years... I don't know... I have no idea how to feel about this.

The History Nerd in me shouts "Leave it where it is! Its old and should stay untouched!'

The Moderate in me is like "Its like having a monument to Third Reich soldiers, there is no right answer either way."

And the Penny Pincher in me is like "How much money is this costing? I want to see how much Taxpayer money this is costing."

A lot of this happened some time after Tito died, a good bit after actually ware they wanted to remove some memorials and re name some streets. But it was eventually not doe because people were telling them to leave it the fuck alone. Like for example street names (Jugoslav National Army, JNA) so its basically a non existent thing of a country that no longer exists but in the end it was left because it is a part of history.

I am generally not a huge fan of the removal of any historical sites, it stinks to much of denial and forgetting your history is the best way to repeat it. Plus in my case Tito is kind of a misunderstood figure in the west and the way he did things. There are good reasons a lot of people still remember him fondly.

I'm not from the US so my opinion is perhaps not pertinent, but as a descendant of both african slaves and amerindian natives I'd see a monument to people who either fought and died either to to keep some my ancestors in abject servitude, or following the orders of such people, as a particularly cruel slap in the face, much like the Japanese's annual celebration of WW2 war criminals outrages many asian countries.
And to me, the notion that a society of white esclavagists living on stolen territory feared to be oppressed by their non-esclavagists counterparts certainly doesn't feel like much of a reason to have such a monument either.

BYU is notorious for that.  Their 'code of conduct' includes such things as 'no coffee or tea' - so if you get raped after you've gone to meet someone for coffee (by the person you met or by some random stranger) - you've 'violated the honor code' and get thrown out.

I don't know. I feel like removing it does maybe help ease racial tensions, but I also fear it could be just ignoring history.
Next thing you know we will have idiots running around claiming the civil war never happened, Lincoln wasn't real and its all al lie by the illuminati and the boujwadi! (Just like they do with the Holocaust and even the Korean War.)

Esclavagiste is French for slaver. I got distracted while typing. :P
History could be served by something that wouldn't be honoring slavers, I think. There are museums, history books, etc...

I think it's a lesson that history is complicated. The Civil War was started over slavery, and fought for slavery, but a large chunk of the poor white Southerners who fought as infantry didn't own slaves or could even care less about the issue. They really did think they were fighting a defensive war, whatever the reality might have been. But generic monuments like this end up honoring all the soldiers of their respective side, slavers or otherwise, and in this case it hurts/dishonors fewer total people on both sides to take the monument away.

Well when you put it like that, it doesn't seem as problematic. Makes more sense to me too.

Far eyes

I generally do not like the idea of "taking away" anything, soldiers fight by and large because they are told to because this is your home and that dude is an asshole who is coming here to wreck your shit. The greater concepts kind of go out the window, war is also a messy thing and close up you might notice nobody is wearing "The good side" and the "evil side" Tshirts in most cases you need distance and and perspective to see such things if you can end up seeing them at all.

Heck from my own history i can tell you even knowing you are on the "wrong" side you still cheer for your soldiers. I dont like talking about it because i have a lot of american friends and it makes them uncomfortable, i was not a soldier during the Nato bombardment of Serbia(I served my year some times after), the place i live did not see much close attention thankfully. I have no ill will against the US even then logically i knew Milosevic was a horrible leader, fucking 70% of everybody knew that. In some ways the conflict probably prolonged his stay by a few months but what it also did was give large sections of the military who might have also deserved some looking into a lot of leeway and protection because in general the sentiment was that they faught to protect.

During my stint in the military (Its mandatory* for 9months back then) i knew and talked to a major who was charged with war crimes and was thinking of willingly going. He was a lonely man who sat around in the cafeteria a lot after hours. He lost his son in the conflicts before that, so really he had no place to go. To here him tell it, you get taken under fire in barracks during the night, you do not ask questions you defend your self. And the next day, hey what do you know Serbian forces gun down 5 14 year olds. Well shit, the 14 year olds had AK and were full on intent on killing you all but thats not what gets shouted around. And that was the tone of things a lot. And once you get far enough into the mind set of "us" vs "them" they stop being humans, its how soldiers can function its a large part of what you get taught you do things because you get told to do things, its not your decision its an order now do it. A lot of people ill understand that, luckily for me it never came to it though there was a period ware it was close for about 3 days (There were some church burning in Kosovo and there was actually an all alert order issued) but very lucky for me noting came of it.

I really dislike the blaming of soldiers for anything, and evidence has to be very detailed for me to feel comfortable judging them for anything because you were not there, nobody was taking shots at your head and the world tends to look a lot more fucking black and white when it is. Me and Bob and Tommy even though Tommy is kind of an asshole are the good guys those idiots over there are the bad guys.

And after its all done and over with Oh by the way you were fighting on the historically evil side so fuck you? Oh grate? So in general i would be very much against taking down a memorial to soldiers, because people feel uncomfortable about it. Good you should, you should feel uncomfortable about every memorial to soldiers.

Damn, I remember Dad telling me about Serbia, how he and his guys got briefings on that.

Yeah, all war is hell, its good people thinking they are doing the right thing being made into puppets and toy soldiers, then being sent off to fight a war on behalf of the politicians sitting safely in their guilded palaces, never once knowing the true terror and pain that the men on the ground do, or the agony of the family they leave behind.

But still sometimes things have to be done. The North needed to put the South down, Allies had to halt the Axis spread.

And I am afraid I don't know much about Milosevic but it sounds as if he has also done wrong and had to be stopped.

And i agree, though he was put down by the Serbian people, the war in meany ways did not help because the made the defense of "if you are against him you are for the US" luckily things were so far along that nobody frankly gave a shit. It kind of came to a head when it became blatantly clear he was trying to rig elections, what was different this time as oppose to other protests that students were joined by Mine workers and a couple of Football clubs and a little later the Military refused orders to come out and the police in large numbers put up token to no force at all.

In other news the FBI arrested a man who planned to bomb a Synagogue during prayer time. HE had been planning to leave hints that would lead people to believe it was ISIS in order to cover his own tracks.
