It is the 16th of Arodus, in the year 4710. The festival of Armasse used to be a holy day for the worshipers of Aroden, but since the Last Azlanti’s death a century ago the holiday has taken a more general tone for those who live beside the horror of the Worldwound. It is a day for the celebration of life, the appreciation of family and the pledge to endure and defeat the demons trying to break into reality. Smiles on faces normally marred by downcast eyes and furrowed brows do wonders for city morale in the weeks leading up to the event. The city is now in celebration as you make your way to Clydwell Plaza to attend the opening ceremonies that will begin the festival. Many have come here for many reasons, and you are but one of them.

******

When I first joined E, it was for one reason. To run Wrath of the Righteous in an unadulterated way that shows both the heroism of the Crusaders and the depravity of the demons they fight. Of all of the work that I’ve seen Paizo produce, Wrath of the Righteous is some of the best and has some of the best characters. The thing is that a war with demons is a brutal affair and could be rated R for many, many reasons. Sadly, for a number of reasons, some structural in the intial adventure, some of them personal, that game has effectively fizzled. To this end, I've rewritten the opening of the first chapter to deal with some of the issues of running Wrath in a forum and am itching to get the ball rolling again. This is an awesome campaign, and come hell or high water, I want to see it though to the end.

Actually, both of those things are likely to happen.  >:)

Setting: Golarion
Number of PCs: Four.
Level: Second
Classes: Any pathfinder class. I’d like to aim for roughly the classical “balanced” party, although I’m okay with deviating from it a bit. I’d strongly advise that one character be a paladin, but the choice is up to you guys and gals.
Races: Any standard race is okay. I’ve also adapted several monstrous races to LA +0 (10-13 RP) versions using the rules of the ARG on my blog, which has a link below. I would be more than happy to allow you to use one of these races, or to work with you to create another 10 RP monstrous race if their background and motivations work with the campaign.
Ability Scores: Generate using 20 point buy
HP: Full at first level, then half+1 at each level afterwards.
Starting gold: 1000 gp
Character Age: 21+, or racial equivalent. No exceptions.
Alignment: Any non-evil, with exceptions for individual concepts and players. I am willing to entertain the idea of neutral characters working for other forces of evil that are opposed to the Abyss (such as Hell) but they must be willing to work with and take orders from Good PCs and NPCs of their own volition, and not backstab said characters when convenient. Also keep in mind that the party will still average on the side of light and justice, so there would be no more than one such character. See character tips below for more details. Furthermore, everyone in the group need to be able to get along. Asshole evil, preachy good, lawful templar, and chaotic jerk characters should be avoided.
Background: Does not need to massive, but personal character arcs are part of this AP, so you need to give me enough to work with. I’m going be putting effort into tying your background in to the campaign, so please put the effort into your story first! Also, remember you get one campaign trait which ties into your background which must be integrated. If two characters want to have the same trait, they will have to have some aspect of shared background in this campaign.
Traits: Everyone gets two, plus an additional campaign trait from the Wrath of the Righteous Player’s Guide, although each player must take a different campaign trait. I’m willing to be flexible with the backstory behind each of these traits though, so you you don’t have to use them verbatim. Also, this game is going to go mythic eventually and each trait is tied into a particular mythic path in the Player’s Guide. I am going to do away with that, regardless of what trait and path you pick, you will be able to gain the full benefits of the trait when the time is right.
Mythic Progression: The mythic progression is likely to be slightly slower in my version of the game, but you will gain at least one mythic tier per adventure. Still working out details.

Posting Rate: I don't expect daily posts, since I know few people who can keep that rate up, however if you are gone 72 hours without posting in the game thread with no prior notice, I'll be checking in via PM. If that's going unanswered, or happening multiple times, I'll be opening the game back up to someone who can post more regularly. I don't want to be a hardass, but that's what it takes to keep forum games going I'm afraid.
Personality: As I said above, your character needs to be trusting enough to work with others without trying to screw them over (… screw them on the other hand…). Keep a game cohesive on the boards is hard enough with characters getting sarcastic with one another. Further beyond that, your characters must be interactive. Playing a lone wolf, or someone who is not constantly contributing because its "not in character" for them to interact is neither fair nor appreciated in my games, nor to do I have much tolerance for that play style. I know that may come off as being an ass, but my overwhelming observation has been that those characters kill games and suck the fun out of it for everyone else, neither of which are scenarios I want.
Appearance: As you please, although a picture is required so that I can use it with our maps, although it doesn’t have to be a perfect representation of your character (Blinkin excepted as per usual).
Sexuality: This is a war story. People under the pressure of life or death often deal with that through sex. This is also a story of demons. They use sex as temptation. I like to see the relations between characters grow. That may or may not have sexual aspect. So do expect sex to happen, although won't expect to get intimate with whoever you want right off the bat (although celebrity does have its perks). It will take at least some work, although you certainly could greatly expedite that if you play your cards right. Now with the fun stuff out of the way, here is the fair warning. Non-con and sexual relations with anyone under 18 are totally off limits for me. I feel that even in erotica, neither have their place and should not be used in any manner other than as a show of utter depravity, and never in a manner that is meant to turn on the reader. Even manipulation with magic I would consider at best to be morally grey, and I would not hesitate to classify it as a form of rape.

Selection: I will post a timer countdown to the day I'm making my picks on. I'll take 4 characters once the timer hits zero. You'll have about two weeks.

If you want information on Kenebres, I’ve prepared a simple pdf that overviews some of the major areas of the city, based on the info we know about it. You can find this by following the following link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f2hfzg1j1fwjj2h/Kenebras.pdf?dl=0

I’ve also copied the following out of the Player’s Guide for ease of reference and to spark some ideas:
Character tips

How should you prepare for the dangers that await you in the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path? Just keep the following in mind when creating your character. These hints, suggestions, and character options are designed to help you create characters perfectly suited to jumping right into—and excelling over the course of—this mythic campaign.
Alignment: The theme of good versus evil is paramount throughout Wrath of the Righteous, more so than law versus chaos. Good-aligned characters make the most sense for this Adventure Path, be they lawful, neutral, or chaotic. Whether you play a lawful good hero or a character with more flexible morals, it’s important that your character be easily motivated to go to the Worldwound and fight demons. It‘s also a good idea, as in any campaign, to make your choice in a way that won’t be disruptive to the party. The disruption caused by bringing different alignments into the party will vary from group to group, so the best way to make sure that your choice works is to talk with your group about what you’re planning.
Bringing Friends: Friendly NPCs will be playing significant roles as allies throughout the Adventure Path, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring your own friends. Small or Medium eidolons and animal companions will be more appropriate early in the campaign, and as early as the second adventure, larger companions and mounts will have numerous chances to shine. There are elements of travel, so you don’t need to elave your mount at home.
Classes: Wise generals use every tool available, and as such all disciplines are used in the fight against the demons of the Worldwound. You can find a place for a character of any class in Wrath of the Righteous, but some choices might seem especially appropriate. The paladin is an obvious choice, but any good-aligned religious class is certainly appropriate. This includes clerics (particularly with martial archetypes, like Crusader), inquisitors, or even oracles with the battle mystery. Cavaliers also make fine crusaders, particularly those sworn to the order of the star or to the various battlefield orders. Rangers who choose evil outsiders as their favored enemies are also particularly valuable. Though much of this Adventure Path concerns itself with martial elements and divine magic, it doesn’t leave out arcane casters. Sorcerers and wizards with talents for conjuration will find places to shine in the Adventure Path, and knowledge of the planes is important for those who fight against demonkind.
As you contemplate what class your character will be, consider the new options you will potentially have from Pathfinder RPG Mythic Adventures. Mythic paths are not tied to specific classes, but certain classes get more benefit out of particular paths.
Crusading Faiths: The faiths of Abadar, Iomedae, Sarenrae, Shelyn, and Torag are the most active among the crusaders of Mendev, although those of other good deities and empyreal lords (particularly Desna or the Empyreal Lord Pulura) have important roles to play as well. Faith in a deity is not required, but many of the allies and resources you’ll be encountering have ties to the good deities of Golarion.
Demons and Other Foes: Demons are the primary foes you’ll be facing in Wrath of the Righteous, but chaotic evil outsiders are far from the only enemies you’ll encounter. Humans, dwarves, and native outsiders are common as well, in the form of cultists and other opponents. Undead, aberrations, magical beasts, and vermin enemies will also be encountered relatively often.
Origins: People from all over the Inner Sea find their way north to Mendev, offering their swords to fight against the demons of the Worldwound. As such, your character can reasonably originate from anywhere in the Inner Sea. The Adventure Path begins in the crusader city of Kenabres, so make sure that your character has a reason to enlist in the fight and venture to Kenabres. The campaign begins on a holy day, so perhaps your character made a pilgrimage to Kenabres to celebrate the day prior to swearing herself or himself to the cause. A short primer on the city of Kenabres is included in this Player’s Guide on page 9.
Paladins: This Adventure Path is an excellent choice for paladin characters—not only are there a lot of foes paladins shine against, but from a roleplaying standpoint, the crusade against the Worldwound is tailor-made for paladins. Keep in mind, though, that there will be points during your adventure where things will look dark, and you will be presented with some difficult moral and ethical choices at times—in addition, make sure to read the notes on redemption on page 11.
Races: Outnumbered and facing an assault from evil outsiders, the crusade today has no compunctions regarding race when it comes to outfitting its forces. Able-bodied men and women from all races are welcome so long as they are willing to fight the good fight. At one time tieflings were distrusted and shunned, but now some of the fiend-blooded fight alongside aasimars while defending Mendev or striking against the horrors of the Worldwound. Many tiefling crusaders claim that their blood makes them the best suited to fighting demons, and they also have defenses that help them shrug off some of the demons’ deadliest attacks.
In addition to defending the continent from demonic horror, a fair number of dwarves who have joined the crusades battle the Worldwound in hopes of reclaiming a lost Sky Citadel within its borders.
While nearly every human ethnicity in the Inner Sea region can be counted among those who fight against the Worldwound, some say the Kellids are the most passionate about healing the Abyssal wound. Their homeland of Sarkoris fell when the Worldwound opened, and many Kellids in Mendev’s army fight not only to ensure the safety of future generations, but also to redeem their ruined homeland.
Redemption: Not every evil NPC in Wrath of the Righteous is meant to be killed. Now and then, you’ll encounter NPCs who are working hard to be redeemed, or otherwise working against their evil natures. Wrath of the Righteous will give characters several opportunities to redeem and guide NPCs and organizations alike toward the path of righteousness. Redemption might also be a personal mission for your character. Perhaps your character decided to fight for the crusades as a way to purge a tainted past.

Always interested in your pathfinder games, Dabus. I call not-the-paladin!

Definitely tempted by this! I've always loved the sound of WotR, but my IRL group got stuck somewhere midway through the infinite giant wastes of Rise of the Runelords, and the spectre of another 2d6 rune giant fighters broke us at last. This sounds really cool, though, and I particularly like this:

I'll have a think about characters, and nab the Player's Guide. Just as a heads up, your dropbox link is broken - or at least I can't access it (Link Not Found error).

Pathfinder is a very tempting topic. :)

Are you wanting full characters to choose from or just detailed concepts?

And while you have any class/race just about are there any you really don't want around? Or do want around?
I use the SRD myself and don't always catch the blurb about what book each class is from so a list to avoid is nice. :)

With that in mind are the Path of War and Psionic books permitted?

Pockets

Ok, so color me interested. I have to agree Fallen that this setting has all the impetus of an R to XXX rated story since we are dealing with demons and those who worship them.

Though I should probably go on record as stating you might want to open this up to like six people. Some are likely to drop somewhat into the game.

I call dibs on the Rogue. Though I will graciously bow out if too many people exhibit an interest or Fallen wants me to sideline it.
08/02 - New A/A Update

Ixy

I would very much like to take part in ongoing discussions for this game, and I'd strongly like to be considered as an applicant.  I am certain that, with the popularity of PF games, this will get very full and full of chatter fast, so if I miss an update or a question, please let me know.

I have two character concepts that I've been toying with over the years, but I will read up on this campaign first to try to find a character that fits.  I would very much like to play a paladin that is "lawful good, not awfully stupid", driven hero struggling to stay on the right side of the law in a dark world... or, there's the stand-by outcast with noble intentions, dangerous urges, and a strong sense of social justice despite the law.

Should this be fitting, I can begin drafting up character ideas for consideration.  Thanks for your time--

Yes, yes, and yes. I've been dying to play Wrath of the Righteous, you have no idea. @.@

I'll work on some ideas asap!

Count me as intrigued as well; I shall begin thinking up a character concept.  As a side note, I tried the pdf link you provided in your initial post and there is no file found.  :-\

I would like to add my interest, and also second the asking if Path of War or Psionics are allowed?

A few of the character concepts I would put forth into this game hinge on that material being present.

Thank you!

I'll have a character up today or tomorrow, this looks terrific!

*skrtch* This seems strangely familiar for some reason.

I didn't get in the first time around when you ran this, but hope springs eternal!

I've even got an idea for the character I'd like to play - a Dhampir Holy Gun/Mysterious Stranger, since you said a paladin is a good idea and I'd like to try out a gun-wielding character in PF.

EDIT: And more brainstorming....a dhampir born of a union between a paladin and a vampire she was trying to redeem. At his birth, the smell of the blood drove the father into a frenzy, killing his mother. The grieving father either destroys himself under the sun in penance, or disappears declaring his intention to do so, and the character is left an orphan. The backstory for the Empereal Lord Ragathiel is just about a perfect match, so I'm going to grab the Touched By Faith campaign trait. Like his patron, the character struggles to suppress his blood hunger and fights a never-ending quest to do good and overcome his tainted heritage.

I'm a little iffy about this mainly because a Holy Gun can't fulfill any of the four traditional party roles, being a low-skill point lightly armored ranged combatant. But if that can be worked around somehow, I think it's an excellent match thematically for the crusade and redemption themes of the adventure path. DM feedback appreciated before I start to crunch numbers or write a detailed backstory.

DomJoe

I know there is alot of interest for this already, but I am interested as well. I've never played Mythic Pathfinder, but I would love to give it a shot.

Latooni Subota

Hmmm . . . Half-Elf Cleric, going for some tag-and-buff and some dervish dancing. I've played too many HAMMERTIME clerics and paladins lately, so a lighter-armored hit-and-run healer might be cool!

Claiming the arcane caster slot. Not 100% certain if i want to go six-level caster (bard / magus / skald / summoner) or nine-level hardcore (arcanist / sorcerer / witch / wizard). Someone else can totally have Bloodrager, though.

Argh. And I was thinking I had a Destined bloodline aasimar who might fit this better than the rogue I seem to recall running last time.

Back to the drawing board... s'pose I could refine that rogue a little. Not sure if I /want/ to, but I s'pose I could... hm.

There is no claiming for this game from what I see. Two weeks for applications, four are then chosen. No first-come first-served.

Not in particular. Gunslingers would take a lot of work to adapt in, but its doable. Everything else should be workable.

I'm going to nix both since the AP wasn't designed with them in mind. Sorry. I quite like both.

Not happening. Six players is way to bloated and tends to make d20 games collapse, in my experience. Plus, I've already rewritten sections with four players in mind, not six.

This may actually be the best way to do a gunslinger in this adventure. We could make it work for sure. This would be a very interesting character concept. I'd go with the orphan option, it will make the backstory easier to work with.

Everyone: In light of the above, it bears making note that the campaign traits will modify your backgrounds somewhat, and some plot twists are bigger than others.

You are quite right, but I think what other people are doing is stating their intentions for what they want to play, so that concepts don't get duplicated right off the bat.

VonDoom

I was mostly clarifying for Thorne, since she seemed to take Chula's claiming of the 'spellcaster slot' seriously and wanted to switch concepts because of it.

I'll probably submit a character - possibly Bard, possibly Investigator or maybe Swashbuckler. The low-skill classes just don't seem to do it for me lately.

That said, that particular AP goes pretty high from what I know, so it might also be an opportunity to try and get a Shadow Conjuration/Evocation caster going if that's not too ... well, shady, for an overall good party. I've been wanting to try that for ages.

Oh, by the 'standard' races, do you mean the core races? Mostly asking because I don't like gnomes and the other race that naturally lends itself to the above idea is the Fetchling, with their various shadow-related racials. I wouldn't mind removing some of the extra stuff, like the SLA-progression if Featured Races are available but high RP count is a problem.

Is a Skinwalker, Scaleheart Brawler an option for the party tank?

Using Skinwalker instead of a proper afflicted were template to avoid lv1 DR 5 and LA+ X shennanigans.

As far as concept goes, the guy was a human noble who took a fateful trip through the bayou and was attacked by a weregator; he was bitten and left for dead, then later found by his family. He recovered from his injuries, but the next full moon showed him to be a were now himself. His family tossed him out after that, and he was forced to live like a hobo/hermit with limited knowledge on how to survive in this fashion.

He carried a lot of anger with him from the fact his posh life was stripped away from him, and it burdened him for a long time. At some point he came to terms with the fact that the anger didnt help him and wouldnt undo what was done to him - his fate was pretty much sealed. So he begins a quest to free himself of the grip of the moon by mastering his change. Once he does so, he becomes a hunter of other weres through his unique gifts - the beastial strength tempered by a shrewd intellect. He is generally a decent enough person but his Zealous crusade against weres may have claimed a few innocent lives, as his ultimate goal is to come as close to abolishing the disease as possible - I cant properly call him good-alligned but he is not explictly evil.

I really like playing characters that break the status quo without being super uber special snowflakes of ultimate doom.

I will make a sheet tommorow!

Throwing my interest in with a slightly altered version of the ranger that I played before.

Lydia Redfern

Physical Description:
Lydia could be best described as a striking woman of unusual beauty.  A mass of rich chestnut colored hair falls about her face and shoulders in curly locks, framing a lightly tanned face that’s dominated by slightly upturned almond shaped Midnight blue eyes. Slightly pouty lips under a straight nose and a firm, almost stubborn chin completes her visage.  An athletic figure with a combination of soft curves and firm muscles are accentuated with generous C-cup breast, a slender, toned waist and flaring out into rounded hips and rear. Long, lean legs and well toned arms complete the image. She is most often seen in well made, serviceable, if not overly expensive clothing in nature toned colors.

Personality:
Lydia is a woman who enjoys life with a zest that could leave some winded simply by watching her. A constant, vibrant energy seems to infuse her every breath and she firmly believes that life is meant to be lived, people anoyed and humor above all is to be encouraged. If you’re as likely as not to die tomorrow, live for today! A relatively good natured person, she is as much at home in a crowd of people in a tavern as she is in the wilds of the forest. If you make it through her demanding standards, you’re a friend who’ll never find anyone more loyal to the concept… If you’re an enemy… well, there’s loyalty there too.

Background:
Lydia is the only child of parents with a serious taste of wonderlust and desire to see what was around the next hill; settling down only long enough to restore their supplies, make some more coin and gather up items to sell in the next town or settlement that they came to. As a result, Lydia was never sure where she was born, or where she came from… only that the world was vast and she longed to stay in one place.

When Lydia was in her early teens, her family was attacked by a demon that had gotten through the ward stones; Her parents were killed and Lydia left for dead. She never knew how long she laid at the edge of death, in a state between one world and the next before she was found by a half-elf who had been tracking the demon for some time. The man, a ranger by profession, cared for her until she returned to the world of the living and took Lydia under his wing. As she grew older and began to display some of the talents of woodlore and animals, he began to teach her the basics of his own calling.

As time went on, Lydia and Elister, her mentor and adoptive guardian, became an not uncommon sight in the forest and surrounding lands as she learned her craft and sold the occasional bow in the settlements or towns for the few things that she couldn’t obtain from the land.

When the call went out of the gathering of another crusade to push the demons back filtered through the world, Lydia, with the memory of her parents in her mind, set out to do her part, to take vengeance for what had happened to her and her parents, for what had happened to so many thousands more over the scores of years that the blight was upon the land. With her bow in hand, she vowed to send every demon she laid eyes on back to it’s infernal rest.

Done! Here's Erakasyne Morrinoe/'Breaker-of-Chains', penitent crusader of Arshea!

Basically, Breaker is a mix of three ideas I've been mulling over in my head for a while now. First up, I've always liked the idea of exploring a little more what Eidolons actually are, and exploring the relationship with their summoners a bit more - hence, the idea of what a relationship between an Eidolon and a Summoner is like when the Eidolon gets the upper hand, and is effectively calling the shots/acting as a kind of possessing force that can be 'let out of the bag' a little (i.e. summoned as a fused Eidolon). I've also enjoyed writing her as an inversion of the usual 'we dug too deep and unearthed something awful' cliche - something weird, but on the side of good, got unleashed in the bowels of the earth, and has steadily been making its way to the surface. Finally, she's a servant of Arshea, the empyreal lord of freedom and constraint - of shedding what you once were, and becoming fluid - the whole idea of freedom, redemption and the sacrifices and constraints that you need to place on yourself to get there is a pretty key theme to her character, and should hopefully work well with the themes of WotR. She's certainly a bit weird, and might be an unusual warrior in the Fifth Crusade - 'dark elf who turns into celestial spider with a penchant for thunderous preaching' is a bit out there - but I think that a lot of her weirdness ought to work well with what WotR is about, and she'll be natural well-inclined to get on well with other crusaders.

As far as 'party role' goes, I see her/them as being a tank/melee slugger, with a few potential extra roles to round the party out - a few utility abilities from her spell casting, and a back-up role as a diplomat and ecclesiatical negotiator; hopefully that fits in well with other people's idea of the party! I've taken 'Touched by Divinity (Arshea)' as her campaign trait, since it makes sense for her background (again, inverting the 'mysterious dreams leading you to unconsciously unearth something awful' cliche), but if other people want dibs on that, and she got into the running for the final party, I could probably shift things around to have her use 'Stolen Fury' or 'Touched by Awfulness' with only a small amount of re-jigging as a substitute. Probably angling for the Marshal mythic tier in the end.

Anyhow:

Confession of Erakasyne Morrinoe, mendicant-servitor of Arshea, to Spark Lightdaughter, Adept-Martial of the Arshea, Empyreal Lord and Spirit of Abandon

‘We dug too deep.

‘I know that now. What was I expecting, following the dreams and seductions of an Empyreal Lord of the infinite heavens, leading me to organise expeditions deeper and deeper into the Darklands? What was I expecting when, guided by my Lady’s whispers, I instructed my miners to pierce the stratum of raw adamantine that inexplicably met their picks? What else should I have expected, but that the THING of such indescribable beauty in my dreams should rise from the crevass beneath, an octet of blade-limbs lancing out like rays of the morning sun to gut the overseers of my slaves, to sever their manacles and chains, to ensare my soul and drag it into itself? She guided me to that moment, and in my old blinded state, I could not recognise that by making me unearth the Breaker of Chains, I was unleashing good into the world.

‘I am - I was - Erakasyne Morrinoe, a cousin of royalty in Umberweb, the deepest city of the Drow in the Darklands. I was a child of privilege, to be sure, but not so much that I could rest on my laurels without becoming easier prey for those more conniving and entrepreneurial than I. So I took up mining - hardly a noble trade, but since we were in the outpost of civilisation closest to Golarion’s telluric heart, one that would at least be able to buttress a place for me in Umberweb culture - perhaps one of the only choices available to me in the bitterly conflict-riven, bitterly constraining society we’d built up around ourselves. We were successful, for a time - driven by dreams and visions I told no other about, I directed my slaves to previously unknown veins of precious metals and gems of exquisite beauty, recovering hauls that gave even the most hardened Abraxite disciples pause - but each new expedition drew us further and further from the watchful protection of Umberweb’s militia and overseers, forcing me to give my slaves more and more autonomy in order to carry out our work.

‘And then finally, we dug too deep, and released Breaker. They’re well-named, if somewhat unimaginatively - unconstrained, flaring with long-hoarded power and anger over the little serf-fief I’d made, they tore apart the few guards I’d brought with me, sent the newly-freed slaves packing under their blessing and protection, and then, seeking out a vessel and host, tore apart my soul, and took up residence there. In a moment, every obeisance to the Demon Lords - to Abraxas, to Areshkagal, to Nocticula - was burned to sacred ash, the flames of which burn in my heart still. To this day, I don’t know why, and they won’t tell me - there are parts of their mind I’m barred access to, even when we’re together. If I flatter myself, I’d say that it’s because, in my own way, I was under social bondage of my own - trapped in a society that would murder me if I did not act as a dutiful servant to its rituals, customs, and culture - but I’m not sure how much priority Arshea puts on saving us underfolk from ourselves, especially when we have, from the comfort of our own homes, signed the death warrants of dozens, hundreds of slaves under our own command. My knowledge of the planes suggests that many inhabitants of the Upper and Lower planes cannot only exist on Golarion without certain preconditions being met, and that possession is a common technique for demons to remain here beyond their allotted time - but I cannot believe that Breaker would act in such a way, either to invade the Material without authorisation, or to take another’s freedom by consuming their soul - I j-just cannot. Third, and most promising, from what I’ve heard of the Host of Delectation’s theology, is that Breaker took my freedom to me, in order to give it to me. While they’re in my head, in my heart, my soul may not entirely be my own, but I can see, do, act in ways that I could not otherwise. If I had left their sundered prison, to go back to a life of slavery and enslavement, how free would I truly be? But with my Chains Broken, I now can see the evil I’ve wrought in the world, and, with the aid of my jailor, do something to redeem myself, free myself from these chains of sin.

‘And so I fled. Breaker made themselves a form that could sustain me, sustain us both, as we evaded patrols, clambered up through the Darklands, slew or bargained our way past what opposed us. It was a hard time - a penance, a self-scourging, a down-payment on all the suffering I’d caused to others in my life - but my Eidolon protected me, bleeding off power and essence in great kenotic waves in order to stop me from falling before I could protect myself.’

<She coughs, is silent for a moment. When she resumes speaking, she is cautious, a slightly harried and nervous tone rising in her voice.>

‘We reached the surface, and, for a time, lay there, wearing naught the tattered finery we’d once possessed, newborns gasping at the sun for the first time. After hours - no, days - Breaker, now a shade of their former self, retreated back inside me, to heal, and bade me travel north via safehouses of our Lady’s, to Mendev, and the Worldwound. It was there that they told me I might act to free others - from their existence in service to darkness, from oppression under the Abyss’ shadow, from the hardening of hearts and certitude that war forces onto the best of us, Arshea cared not - and in doing, so, free myself. I arrived at the gates of Kenabr - oh Spirit of Abandon, please, not no- not n-‘

<There’s a coughing sound, a retching, a gagging as something catches in her throat, and then escapes in a spill of oddly rustling vomit onto the floor. Silence for ten, twenty, thirty seconds. Then she begins speaking again, with greater confidence, vigour, and what can only be described as joy. Her voice is twinned with another, an alto slightly deeper than her own, which musically and playfully races along with hers, sometimes a half-step behind, sometimes anticipating her by a fraction of a second.>

’BE NOT AFRAID!

‘As one servant of the Empyreal Liege knows another, know this, sister-adept in Arshea’s service - that I am the Breaker of Chains, and that I speak through the one who was once Erakasyne Morrinoe. I am the one who wove the gossamer thread for Arshea’s veils, who severs the cords binding the oppressed and who spins adamantine chains to bind the free.

‘Though once entrapped beneath the earth, I am now free, by the hands of those who once bound me, and my progress is once more unrestricted. We - our body, our soul, our purpose - are bent to the will of the Spirit of Abandon, and I grow within and of and from my host’s body to a form that once again may be fit to do the Spirit’s work.

‘Know this: that Arshea stands with the Crusade and with their more martial siblings, and teaches their lesson, through the service of their servant:

‘There is no greater freedom, no greater love, no greater assertion of our own lives than to give all up in service of freedom, love, and life, and to bend our knees before what is good, and right, and just. Through this - the weakest servant of Arshea, once a slave-driver, once an Enemy of the Faith whose heresy has now been BURNED from her heart, once what we all seek to destroy and topple - we will together show the world that not even the Abyss itself has dominion over those who live in love.

‘For the Fifth Crusade!’

Appearance and demeanour
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

When Breaker is dormant, Erakasyne looks much like any other Dark Elf, if a little more androgynous and ‘slight’ - both physically and metaphysically - than the average member of Drow aristocracy. The recent tumults and reversals in her life, though, make themselves clearly known - what once might have been remarked on as signs of luxury and beauty in Umberweb have either turned to flab, or been scoured away by her journey of penance and long subterranean vigils guarding sputtering campfires. It’s her face and bearing, however, that truly give her away - her wind-ravaged skin is literally cracked and riven by worry lines, and she’s constantly checking the exits, her shadow, and anything else that might hide … well, something.

When the Breaker-of-Chains - her ‘eidolon’ - is active, however (and, if trouble’s to be expected, they often are active), things are very different, and certainly convey a sense of Not From Around Here. The Breaker is a lunatic splice of drifting mist-fine gossamer veils, finely-wrought instrument of navigation, and cave-dwelling arachnid - long, time-weathered metallic blade-limbs that taper to asymptotic points, a mouth filled with razor-edged geometric shapes rather than teeth or mandibles, and a cluster of eyes like fist-sized chunks of fire-melted glass that glitter with an unspoken promise of rapturous freedom from all constraints of How Things Once Were. It is beautiful, in its own way, and between the vessel and possessor, the two of them draw grace and confidence from their mission to bring beauty, freedom, and love to the world. While Breaker enjoys particular influence over the relationship, they are prone to making grandiloquent prophetic statements about their purpose in the world and relationship (neither of which is unambiguously clear …) with their Empyreal Lord, Arshea, every action, gesture, and word a lesson both for those around them, and the penitent Erakasyne.

That said, that particular AP goes pretty high from what I know, so it might also be an opportunity to try and get a Shadow Conjuration/Evocation caster going if that's not too ... well, shady, for an overall good party. I've been wanting to try that for ages.
Yup, all the way to the top. Lord knows how long it will take.

Quote from: VonDoom on April 03, 2015, 02:47:43 AMOh, by the 'standard' races, do you mean the core races? Mostly asking because I don't like gnomes and the other race that naturally lends itself to the above idea is the Fetchling, with their various shadow-related racials. I wouldn't mind removing some of the extra stuff, like the SLA-progression if Featured Races are available but high RP count is a problem.
Fetchling would be fine if you can find a way to knock it down to 13 RP.

Interesting idea! From an in-world continuity point of view, how was it that he was able to master the lycanthropic curse? And from a background perspective, which campaign trait are you taking, and how are you integrating it into this story? Those two things could be linked behind the scenes though, so there's not really a wrong answer there.

Oop - if we're knocking down races above 13RP, I'll have to have a look at cutting down the Drow a little. How does removing poison use, weapon familiarity, and the perception bonus sound to you (the last because she's lost an eye at some point, judging by the picture, probably while escaping from the Parklands, and the former two because she deliberately avoided the 'backstabbing' bit of Drow society by going and inheriting a slavery-and-mining concern)? I feel a bit guilty because it's slightly 'Path of What I Wasn't Going To Do/Use Anyway', but then - taken as a whole - it does drop her down to 8RP, which is a bit more sane?

EDIT: 6:55pm - also rejigged the skills to make them work as Pathfinder-style ones, rather than that 3.5 ones. Whoops!

This may actually be the best way to do a gunslinger in this adventure. We could make it work for sure. This would be a very interesting character concept. I'd go with the orphan option, it will make the backstory easier to work with.

Well, he was going to be raised as an orphan either way. But with the tying backgrounds into the campaign thing, I didn't know if it would be better to have his father's fate ultimately unknown and set up for a Vader Reveal at some point. Not that a Vader Reveal counts as much when you know it's coming, but there might be a vampire bad guy ahead, and you might have been able to use the ambiguity.

Name: M’iaq

Character Age: 23
Alignment: Lawful Good

Character Sheet

Background: In his youth, M’iaq’s reputation was less than sterling having fallen into a bad crowd of pickpockets and thieves, but back then he went by his birth name J'Dhannar.  It didn’t help that he came from a poor upbringing with dreams of living a life of luxury surrounded by valuable baubles that he would never be able to attain through legitimate means.  Being a creature of envy that possessed the natural grace needed to attain the items of his desire, J'Dhannar took destiny in his own hands to pull himself out of the slums he was born into.  He would never forget his first ‘score’; a silver statuette of a partially naked woman with butterfly wings that glistened beautifully in the sunlight of the crowded marketplace.  In that moment, the young J'Dhannar knew he had to have it and his first attempt at theft was anything but graceful.  It was a simple snatch and run theft that instantly raised an alarm.  While the robbery itself worked against his chances of escape, his nimble stride made up for it in his ability to weave through the crowd more easily than his pursuers.  He was caught despite his best efforts, but not by those he had expected as, in the midst of his escape, an arm reached out of the crowd, snared him around the neck, and pulled him into a tightly packed group of people that shielded him from detection of the authorities.  Instead of being turned in or mugged for the very possession he had stolen, the man and his small entourage turned out to be members of a local crime syndicate who instead offered to train J'Dhannar and ultimately grant him membership into their organization.  It was an opportunity that, in the catfolk’s naivety, he couldn’t refuse.

A few years passed and he was firmly seated as a member of The Sabortooth Syndicate specializing in pickpocketing, burgling, and small-time heists.  During this time, J'Dhannar only found himself contented rather than satisfied as it seemed much of his earnings went towards the gang rather than his own pocket.  It was enough to live comfortably on, but he knew he would never attain the life of indulgence he so dreamed by doing these little jobs.  There was much talk between several close friends and himself of ‘the big score’.  Rumors of lost treasures in Sarkoris were abundant, perhaps originated from the refugees complaining of their lavish livelihoods lost to the demonic hordes.  They knew that even a small fraction of that lost wealth would be enough for them to retire in luxury.  Eventually the day came where the five of them found the ambition – or perhaps it was more ignorance – to chase their dream; they were masters of stealth and subtly, sneaking into and out of enemy lines would be little different from the several non-detection heists they pulled off effortlessly.  After a few months of planning in secret, they were ready to venture on their expedition to sneak into one of the abandoned settlements closest to the frontlines, raid a house that once belonged to a noble family, and return beyond the wardstones undetected.

It went as well as one would expect who wasn’t looking at it through the lens of invincibility that comes with youth.  To their merit, they had made it behind enemy lines undetected and with minimal difficulty, which may have led to them becoming more careless.  They had even made it to the settlement where their wealth resided, but by that point they were being hunted by a group of swaithe demons who were using the local fauna as scouts.  J'Dhannar and his group made it to their destination, only marginally disappointed by what valuables remained, but it there was still enough of value to make the expedition worthwhile; especially if they pillaged a few nearby houses as well.  The ambush happened while they were loading their bags with loot.  Swaithe attacked them from all directions, using the confined spaces to their advantage, and in the few moments J'Dhannar and his friends thought they could fight off the puny looking goblin-like creatures, it quickly became apparent that they were more formidable than they looked.  The call went out to scatter and abandon their heist, so J'Dhannar did what he was trained to do; get out as fast as possible, find a place to lay low, and reconvene in a safe location.

Every route out of the house seemed to have been blocked off; every doorway seemed to have one of those demons ready to pounce anything that stepped through while others seemed to strategically corner their victims.  Injured from a number of slashing claws and finding himself trapped in one of the bedrooms with enemies quickly closing in, J'Dhannar took the only exit that remained to him – he leapt out of the third-story window onto the empty street below.  Fortunately, he took the fall well and managed to dissipate much of the energy in a roll that still left him feeling battered, but he was well enough to duck into a nearby building and take several routes that were intended to shake any would-be pursuers.  After a few hours of waiting for the heat to die down, he started taking measures to track down his comrades, but none of his disguised call signs received a response and the sun was lowering in the sky.

As much as he wanted to wait for his friends, to find them or what became of them, J'Dhannar was too terrified.  It was his first encounter with the monsters that lurked beyond civilization.  They were no longer the fabled boogieman lurking under the bed; they had become the predator that stalks in the shadows, ready to devour its prey.  Suddenly his satchel partially filled with items of gold, silver, and minor gemstones no longer provided the sort of wealth he now desired.  More than anything else, he wanted to live and it didn’t matter what sort of lifestyle he would have.  Feeling trapped, alone, and in mortal peril, J'Dhannar tossed aside his pack of scavenged loot and began praying to any and all the deities for help in his time of dire need.

J'Dhannar had not realized how tired he was from the ordeal until he found himself waking to the malevolent cackles coming from a trio of swaithe.  They closed in on him with sadistic glee while he rose to his feet and prepared to fight to his last knowing full well that only death awaited him.  Regardless, these were the creatures that killed his friends and he wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction of hearing him beg for his life.  The foremost demon leapt at him, but it was met in midair with a salvo of arrows that streaked in through an empty window frame causing it to land short in a crumpled heap with an arrow embedded between its empty eye sockets and one where its heart likely resided.  The remaining swaithe let out a cry of surprised distress, fleeing now that they no longer had the advantage leaving J'Dhannar to peer out the window.  The woman who stood on an adjacent rooftop was just as beautiful as the statuette he had stolen in his youth and he beheld her in much the same way; she was a means to attain what he now desired – a chance to survive this nightmare.

Though he could not figure how she did it so adeptly, the woman managed to lead him out of the settlement with the sort of skill that made his infiltration of the place seem as overt as a marching band.  J'Dhannar tried on a few occasions to ask her how she found him, why she was here, or even to thank her for saving his life as they made their way towards Kenabres, but every attempt to speak was met with the gesture to remain silent.  Even in the cover of the night sky, J'Dhannar was able to see her in the dim lighting and could only marvel at his savior committing every detail to memory.  There was something about her that surprised him, namely the sort of sadness in her features and the way she clung to the symbol of Desna around her neck as though her life depended on it; it felt like a mirror to his own feelings in the loss of his friends and how desperately he had called to the divines for aid.  It would seem Desna had been the one to answer his plea by sending this woman to rescue him.  There was much he wanted to ask and say to her, but understood he needed to wait until they were safe.

The sky was starting to fill with the light that would herald the sunrise when they saw the torches of Kenabres burning in the distance.  It was there that she gave the signal to wait while she scouted ahead as she had done several times during their trip, only it had been a contingent of heavy cavalry that returned.  After a series of very skeptical inquiries, they pulled J'Dhannar upon one of their mounts with the obvious statement that it was not safe to be here before escorting him to Kenabres.  Along the way J'Dhannar told them that there was a woman travelling with him and a fraction of the patrol was sent to find her.  It was only when he was safely within Kenabres that he learned the outriders hadn’t been able to find the woman.

Instead of returning home where the temptations of his former life could put him back on the path that Desna had save him from, J'Dhannar chose to follow a path that would temper him from the vices that nearly cost him his life.  He sought out a monastery of Sarenrae to atone for his past and to overcome his desires of envy and greed by serving as a monk of their order under the name of M’iaq.  As far as he was concerned, J’Dhannar had died with the others in those ruins and felt it best to let it be believed as such by everybody else.  Even though he is thankful to Sarenrae for guiding him to redemption, he still pays homage to Desna for being there for him in his time of need so that he could start his path to redemption.

Personality: M’iaq has become somewhat socially reserved after his encounter in the Worldwound, the ordeal clearly having left an scar on his self-confidence that may never heal.  In situations where leadership and initiative of decision making is needed, it is very difficult for him to overcome the hesitation that comes from self-doubt.  This does not make him any less pleasant to talk to or spend time with; in fact there is nothing he enjoys more than the merriment and a good laugh among friends.  Another effect his time in the Worldwound had on him is making him fiercely loyal to his companions.  Haunted with the unshakable notion that he had abandoned his friends in the past and left them for dead has given him a hardened resolve to do whatever it takes to save those he cares about.

Though he is now walking the path of redemption for his illicit past, M’iaq still battles with temptation to take morally questionable shortcuts for addressing situations.  Years had passed since the divine intervention of his redemption, causing the pain of the lesson to dull enough for the rejection of such temptations to become more conscious decision rather than primarily reflexive.  His training at the monastery has given him the discipline needed to overcome those desires, but there is still a part of him that worries about relapsing and discussions involving such questionable actions tend to clearly make him uncomfortable on a personal level.

Appearance: M’iaq is covered from head to toe in medium-plush fur that is light orange on his back that transitions to beige on his front and muzzle.  His eyes are rich amber in color with the vertically slit pupils felines are known form.  A long, relatively thin tail sways behind him as he walks and is usually a good indicator of the sort of mood he is in when also considering the position of the triangular ears upon his head.  The musculature of his legs, arms, and chest manage to be clearly pronounced despite the layer of fur upon them, but those are more of a result of acrobatic and agile endeavors rather than raw physical might.

I see M'iaq filling the rogue role as far as dancing around the battlefield and throwing out a lot of attacks using flurry or combat styles while also having a range of skills.  Sorry for the lengthy background, I just really got into it while flushing out his character. I see him being particularly vulnerable to certain temptations from an RP standpoint as well as being perticulalty conflicted between his former life and his current one since they are bound to clash at some point. Even having him pulling out his lockpicms is likely to stir up old memories that would be fun to elaborate on. I forsee his involvement with this campaign as being just as much or an internal struggle as it would be an external one.

@DM: Can I start out with a Wand of Inflict Light Wounds as part of my initial equipment, now that I'm reminded? It's 75% of my starting cash, but it'll also be my only reliable method of self-healing.

Similarly, I get a duplicate Gunsmithing feat from Holy Gun 1 and Gunslinger 1. Can one of those be traded out for another feat I qualify for, like Rapid Reload (Pistol)?

Whoops!
Sounds fair.

Go Darth Vader, especially if the fate of the mother is left slightly ambiguous as well. I will make it work and it will be epic.

No need to apologize. I just skimmed it, but it seems to be a very good fit.

Yes, healing is likely going to be very important in the first bit. I'd advise anyone who has leftover cash to invest it in some form of healing. Swapping the feats should be okay.

Amusing problem I just ran into - after buying my Wand for 750, upgrading my pistol for 150 (trait discount), and buying a chain shirt, I didn't have any money left to buy ammunition. :D

Fixed it by downgrading the chain shirt to Studded Leather, now I've got a nice supply of bullets and a gunsmith kit. I'll have to loot armor from a bad guy when we get the chance.

If you have the appropriate craft skill, you can make your own equipment for 1/3 the cost unless the DM says otherwise.

easy way to keep the flavor at a lower RP is just to make her a half-elf of Drow heritage. You get that charisma bonus just the same, and there's some alternate racial traits for drow spooky stuff. It's also a good way to be treated as dubious rather than kill-on-sight in a crusader city. Remember, intelligence and wisdom are Paladin dump-stats  ;D

I have Gunsmithing, which lets me craft ammunition at 1/10 of the cost. The problem was that I was at exactly 0 cash left over, so I had to drop something to free up any coin at all. It was only a -1 AC difference in the end.

I honestly don't massively care about the bonuses, that background's more important. A half-elf wouldn't work at all with the whole 'Darklands slave-owning noble scion releases something nasty blessed and holy in the deep underdark, it drives her to make penance through crusade' background. Also, Kenebros isn't a city full of 'I <3 SMITE EVIL' types, according to the Golarion background - it's a gathering point for all crusader types in a thousand mile radius. Given that tieflings - literal demonspawn with horns, forked tails, and hooves - are allowed in the city as part of the Crusades (albeit facing significant personal discrimination - the corebook has them paying higher prices for goods and risking getting muggedin the street), I don't think it's inevitable that members of more exotic races are going to be killed on sight by four thousand clones of Miko from GitP. Plus, as earlier, any prejudice that does exist just makes things interesting, and provide opportunities for RP - what kind of alliances does the struggle against the Worldwound cause? Does it escalate existing animosities, and if so how? Do you go along, and hide in the shadows, to get along, or do you stand up for yourself? etc.

Anyway, I guess this is a question for FallenDabus - does the background read like it will fit? You're working out the 'touched by divinity' thing with TheGlyphstone, shall I switch to something else to keep a hypothetical party trait-balanced?

You could if you wanted to. One thing that I've seen done before for Wrath is people offering slightly adapted versions versions of their backgrounds for multiple traits so that there is greater flexibility in picking the final group.

Hey Glyph, you can buy wands with partial charges unless the GM says no. For a first level spell, at caster level 1, it's 15 gp per charge. Just as an FYI

Aesa Wyrmborn
Arcanist 2

It was clear from her birth that Aesa was no ordinary girl, with her flame-bright eyes and feverish skin.  As a toddler she began playing with flames, laughing as she held her hand within them as though it merely tickled.  As a child, she began to focus her will into magic.

It was not unexpected.  Years before a massive dragon had descended from the sky upon the wooded mountain village, great beats of its scarlet wings sending waves of ash and the stench of burnt flesh through the streets.  It demanded sacrifice, and Aesa's mother Aella was chosen as the most beautiful maiden, to be chained in the forest and left for dead as the beast instructed.  But Aella was not devoured; for months she was forced to serve the creature, which seemed to change forms as easily as clothing from beast to demon to man.  Finally, having stolen as many riches as it could find, it departed with barely a word, leaving behind its concubine.  Aella gave birth on the remote glacial peak of the Iron Mountain; she took weeks returning to her village.  While the strange babe proved hardy, Aella never fully recovered, dying of lingering wounds and sickness during Aesa's childhood.

The clan accepted the child as they had accepted Aella's sacrifice: stoically and honorably.  Not compassionately.  The girl was too different, too full of rage, anger, and destructive magic.  For her part, Aesa wished little to do with the near strangers who had left her mother to her death.  She took their courtesy as her due, devoured their knowledge with vague contempt and prepared for the day she would seek revenge against her father.

With little more than her magic and clothes Aesa set out to find her father Ciamar and devour his heart.  Her first destination was Ciamar's mountain stronghold, which she knew had been left filled with books and magic.  But when she reached the freezing pinnacle she discovered it was occupied; the twin sisters claimed they had merely followed the smell of power, but gave small hints they might know more.  With the enticement of knowledge and power the sisters convinced Aesa to remain as their servant.  The irony of drudge work in the very structure where her mother had once been enslaved was not lost on Aesa.

The sisters were not cruel at first.  Powerful witches, they taught Aesa some ways to control her power and focus her innate arcane energy.  The library likewise proved a useful resource.  It was not until the dark solstice that things turned awry.  The sisters wished to perform some ritual, a dark and powerful thing involving the sacrifice of a small pseudodragon.  The witches claimed the power they gained would help Aesa seek out her father across the slim boundaries of the planes, but when she walked outside to slit the tiny beast's throat over ancient stones, the athame paused.  Aesa didn't hear the cruelty of her father in the creature's telepathic pleas but the first echo of kinship.  After an hour with the blade poised at Vareth's neck she released him, spilling her own blood instead for the ritual.

Her substitution was not discovered until it was too late.  The cauldron and its noxious brew exploded, burning not only the sister's faces but their very souls.  Aesa, too, was changed: her magic magnified, her body rippled with fire and her hair turned to flame as she was pulled partway across the planar boundary.  For days she writhed in agony, slowly piecing herself back together - for the most part - through inhuman fortitude, although the grip was tenuous, likely to strain with her emotions.

She awoke in a cage of cold iron.  She was never sure if the sisters had always been evil, although it quickly became clear they had never had any information to give her, but the broken rite seemed to have scorched away all their goodness even as it had burned Aesa's soul into something purer.  Kept for two months as a pet, servant, slave and all too often as a victim, she quickly came to realize how kind her clan had been.  She would even come to think fondly of the home she'd exiled herself from, where no one reviled her eyes or grew terrified of a simple cantrip.  Where no one turned to violence upon her for simple amusement or curiosity.  For the witches had observed her resilience and new found power, and sought to claim it as their own.  Their next ritual saw Aesa chained across the very stone where she'd refused to sacrifice before; stripped in the freezing wind, the sisters clawed out a piece of her soul to serve as their plaything, a bauble of mysterious energy, and left her to die.

Aesa holds memories, during that long night, of Vareth's voice, of his small claws scrabbling at the chains, but she knows that must be delusion.  Her fate was hers alone, and of her own making.  It was only when she hovered on the brink of mortality, the control so recently learned to hold herself together slipping, that she discovered a new talent.  She came apart, sparks in the wind, only to reform again a short way distant.  With grim fury, she returned to the stronghold and murdered both witches in their sleep.

Physical Description:  Aesa is mostly human, but the traces of her strange heritage are unmistakable.  Her eyes flicker with an internal flame, her skin is hot to the touch, and she smells faintly of ashes and smoke.  When emotional, her blond hair dances with tongues of fire.

Personality:   Aesa bears the emotional scars of her abuse, is slow to trust or touch, but never meek; she is quick to stand up for herself or any others she sees needing a voice.  Unused to friends, those she does make are absolute.  She is good, but this is still new enough to her that she distrusts it.  She struggles with dark thoughts, tends to let the ends justify the means, and possesses an unearthly allure; disturbingly similar to the sensuality of a succubus.

Hellfire Pendant: A small globe of pure flame wrapped in platinum filigree, the shard broken from Aesa's soul is hot to the touch.  Despite its obvious power she is able to make little use of it presently: but it radiates enough energy that Aesa has little need of sleep.  (Casts Keep Watch 1/day)

Story Role: Aesa has several motivations for joining the crusade.  Primarily, she seeks to slay her father and all others of his kind.  Vengeance has been a lifelong quest: she would have little idea what to do without it.  However, there are also aspects of redemption and the simple need to affirm to herself she is better than her lineage.

It's interesting that both characters were touched by divinity by Empyreal Lords ... if FallenDabus is willing, there'd probably be some sort of possible link there. Of course, I don't want to push you away from TbD - Breaker-of-Chains could work with a few different background traits, she just needs that connection with Arshea, and subtle manipulation by the meddlesome higher power doesn't have to come in the form of a background trait ...

It may be workable... But I'm not sure.

One of the "experimental" aspects of Wrath of the Righteous was the idea of having the campaign traits impact the course of the adventure. Each one modifies a characters background in some major way and then pays off in a big way in the Third and Fourth adventures. It's not that I'm unwilling to have more than one PC with each trait, it's that the payoffs are very specific, and their impact can be very easily diluted by having more than one PC with the same trait. I'm not going to say much, but Touched by Divinity is one of the biggest payoffs, and my personal favourite of all of them, but that also means it is very, very specific. You are right that the dual Empyreal Lords makes it more viable, but I'll have to think to see if that trait being shared is possible. Sadly, it's pretty difficult to make this a transparent issue without giving away the resolution, which I obviously don't feel like doing.

So yes Glyph, I am planning on only have one person with each trait (sorry for missing you earlier), barring something tying the characters together as suggested in the Player's Guide. Child of the Crusade could work for your character, but I really think that Touched by Divinity is a much, much better fit. If you and Morganatic want to avoid competing with each other for traits, I'd suggest that Breaker be the PC who's backstory changes. I know that may seem slightly arbitrary since I can't really explain myself, but you guys will just have to trust me on this one.

Emeric Kessel

Background: Emeric’s life was determined before he was even born. His parents were crusaders who had had a tryst with him being the outcome. His parents adored him when they laid eyes on him but the life they had chosen for themselves was not the life they felt they could give up in light of the fact that the Worldwound had no yet been closed. Instead, they relinquished him to the Church of Iomedae where he was raised with the intent that he would become a member of the clergy, be it a Cleric, Paladin, Inquisitor, or even an Oracle.

Emeric was an apt pupil taking to his studies with a fervor not seen by many, but in his off time he ran about the city with some of the other orphans and street urchins getting into trouble. He learned equally from the school of the street and the classrooms of the church. But his faith in the church was shattered one day.

For weeks, orphans had gone missing but they hadn’t been adopted out. They just went missing, never to be heard from again. One night Emeric couldn’t sleep after a particularly fierce switching had left him with more than a few painful welts that plagued him still. He heard the Headmaster come into the dormitory and gently rouse one of the older boys. The boy followed the Headmaster out of the dormitory without a fuss. Emeric being curious as to what the Headmaster might have wanted at such a late hour decided to follow on silent bare feet.

He followed them to one of the many storerooms in the Orphanage/church cellar and watched the Headmaster strike the boy from behind with a blunt weapon before tying and gagging him up on an altar. Emeric knew something was wrong when the Headmaster replaced the Holy Symbol of Iomedae that hung above the altar with a brass bullheaded icon. Emeric immediately recognized the words the Headmaster chanted from a scroll as those being Abyssal and knew he should go run for help but he remained frozen.

Soon a demon appeared, Emeric would later learn that this was a glabrezu demon. Emeric startled and accidentally knocked the door open. The demon saw him at the same time the Headmaster did but before the Headmaster could say or do anything, Emeric was running only to find that he couldn’t figure out where he was going, stopping to get his bearings he felt an unearthly pain rip through the small of his back as the demon impaled him through the small of his back and lifted him up intent on biting his head off. But a visiting Inquisitor had arrived late and had heard him screaming for help as he ran.

He put an arrow through the demon’s eye. It dropped Emeric to the ground. Emeric did not know what happened after that. He awoke sometime later, his body aflame with fever and his midsection bandaged heavily. He slipped in and out of consciousness for what seemed like a couple hours but turned out to be weeks. His injuries had become infected and had taken longer to heal.

He learned that the Headmaster had been found guilty of consorting with demons and had been sentenced to burn at the stake as a heretic. But when he asked about the man who had saved him, they knew nothing only that he had been found next to the shattered demon and the Headmaster kneeling on the ground, his head in his hands confessing his sins. The Brothers and Sisters of the church helped him regain his strength and he decided that he needed to strike out on his own. The church held nothing for him. He suffered from fugue and the Clerics of Iomedae recognized it for what it was. They gave him supplies and some silver to travel with.

Emeric travelled to Magnimar where he fell in with the wrong crowd. He became a decent thief but his heart wasn’t into stealing from just anyone. His targets had to have had a reason to deserve being robbed. He had started to develop his own code of conduct and finally broke ties with the gang he had been running with. He hit the road again this time trying to figure out what he wanted.

He felt the calling of the Church, but it was conflicted with his need to be his own man and the fact that he had nearly been killed by a demon summoned by a man he had trusted. He had stopped a small temple whose holy symbol he didn’t recognize. Deciding to pray for guidance, he prayed fervently for the entire night and well into the next day.

As he stood from his prayers, he was met by a man who seemed vaguely familiar. The man said that a man did not have to be a member of the clergy to be a member of a given faith. That a man’s actions determined his worth and not his profession. The man gave Emeric an old well worn holy text and told him to read it.

Emeric devoured the text and learned about an Empyreal Lord named Ragathiel who, born of a Demon Lord and a goddess of Fire, had earned his place among the Empyreal Lords and now stood at the forefront of the war against Hell and the Abyss. Inspired Emeric stayed another week learning all he could about Ragathiel and chose him as his Patron deity. He had soon left praying for guidance when he heard that Mendev was calling for another Crusade to close the Worldwound.

It was then that he knew what he had to do. He travelled to Kenebres to answer the call. He hopes to find a group of like-minded individuals who will overlook his period of self-doubt and cooperate for the betterment of Golarion.

Personality: Emeric is an all business kind of guy. He is pious and reverent without being fanatical. He has a definite Robin Hood complex that sometimes tickles his nose and causes him to take risks he otherwise shouldn’t. But he is a generally good guy who likes to try and play the peacemaker. He hates demons with a rabid fanaticism that one might expect to see from a Paladin but is intelligent enough not to just attack first and ask questions later.

Appearance: Emeric is for the most part a clean guy, but isn’t a fanatic about keeping clean shaven so he’s usually got a day or two on his face before he decides to shave or at the very least, trim. Given his time in an Iomedean Orphanage, he is fastidious about his cleanliness and often cleans the tools of his trade, sometimes just because he’s bored.

Sexuality: Emeric is straight heterosexual. While a virgin, he knows that the notion of being with another man feels unnatural to him, he is willing to turn a blind eye to same sex relationships so long as it is consensual.

You've yet to steer us wrong in any of the other games you've run. So if Morganatic doesn't mind going for something else, I'll 'lock in' on Touched By Divinity, with CotC as a backup.

Also, I plan on submitting as the 'frontliner'/tank slot in the 4-person makeup. I'm lightly armored (for now), but I have the damage output to make me 'sticky' - enemies cannot ignore me, and the short range increments of a pistol mean I'll be up close anyways. D10 hit dice make me decently survivable, and I plan on dipping Trench Fighter pretty soon - Mysterious Stranger 1/Holy Gun 2/Trench Fighter 3/Holy Gun or Mysterious Stranger out to 20, so I'll so have my Heavy Armor Proficiency back and be extra sturdy.

Aesa's racial breakdown:
I basically designed everything with the idea of hellfire incarnate.  10 RP total.

Outsider - 3 points
-Darkvision 60'
The exact nature of Aesa's father isn't perfectly clear, but his blend of demonic energies and fire certainly originates from somewhere else.  Fortunately, her emergent tie to elemental fire seems to have incinerated most of the foulness from her soul, perhaps encouraged by the humanity she so often ignored.

Size: medium - 0 points
Half human, and morphologically similar to one, Aesa is unexceptional in stature.

Base Speed: normal - 0 points

Ability Scores: standard - 0 points

Language: standard - 0 points

Elemental Immunity: fire - 4 points
Aesa is immune to her natural element, a prerequisite for playing with fire.

Elemental Affinity: fire - 1 point
The synergy of her own energy makes her fire-related spells more potent.

Fast - 1 point
While larger leaps through dimensions (represented by her Arcanist exploit) require more focus to convert herself momentarily into smoke and flame, smaller skips are simpler.  When pushing herself, she trails smoke and sparks.

Skill Training: intimidate & perception - 1 point
The darker aspects of her father's nature are diminished, but not entirely absent.  Her gaze seems to pierce to ones very soul, plucking out the secrets around her.

Hey Blinkin,

I'm playing a poor ordinary Human Rogue, so don't worry too much. Remember, quality over oddity.

Alright, so I've decided to just work up a whole new character.  She's going to be an Oracle of Shelyn with the Heavens mystery.  Dabus, I noticed you said Fetchlings were cool if one could find a way to lower the RP.  Does the same go for Aasimar?  If so, then I'd like to make her an Aasimar and rework the stats to drop her into the right RP.

#57
Name: Ness Fallstar

Race: Half-Elf

Class: Wild Caller Summoner

Campaign Trait: Child of the Crusade OR Exposed to Awfulness OR Riftwarden Orphan

The power of the demons that ebbs and flows through the Worldwound is a corrupting force, one that seeks to twist everything in its path into a depraved form bereft of rationality or the natural order of the world. Nature was no meager force, however, to be cowed and torn down without a word, nor were those that dwelt within it, that guarded it from the encroaching darkness. The Sidhe were among the vanguard of those sworn to protect the natural world, and among the greatest of them was the Leanan Sidhe. However, even the Sidhe, great lords and ladies of faerie power had a limit; they were unable to affect the world directly, except in very specific ways. Rather, they had to use a conduit, and for this task they chose a boy who was still young when the Fourth Crusade began.

Ness grew up on a small town on the outskirts of Kenabres by the name of Melanfon. His parents, both riftwardens in their own right, were part of the guard that protected the wardstones and ensured that they remained whole even as the entire might of the demon armies made attempt after attempt to destroy the wards that protected the rest of the world against their advance. They, along with most of the adults within the village had been conscripted in previous crusades or continued to stand guard against the demons, the last wall of defense against a mountain of rage and teeth, leaving Ness and the rest of the children to be cared for by the village elders, many in their late years and barely able to tend their own fields much less care for young children.

And so Ness and the others ran wild for a time, within the deep forests surrounding the village, left to much their own devices. It was on one of these adventures that Ness became lost in the forest. He wandered for hours, the quiet forest that he had always been sure he had known like the back of his own hand becoming a twisty thing of brambles and thorns ready to snatch at him, tree branches like arms swaying in the wind to catch at his hair and clothing. Finally he broke down, crying, and that was when a beautiful woman came to him in the guise of an elf. She was the loveliest thing he had ever seen, and immediately his tears tried as his face broke in awe at her presence. She introduced herself to him as simply "Leah", and promised to guide him home if he agreed to a request. Still a boy, he thought nothing of it, and immediately agreed. With a smile, she bid him close his eyes, and as soon as he did so the very earth seemed to spin about him, and he found himself at the entrace of Melanfon once more.

Years passed, and Ness forgot of his encounter with the lady. However, the Demon Lords had an inkling of the Sidhe plan, and thought to easily cripple it. Managing to get a single contingent of their lowest-level soldiers under guises past the wardstones, a great undertaking yet one that would go far, they came in the dead of night to attack the village. They laid waste to Melanfon, slaughtering the elderly by the dozens, as well as leaving no child untouched, for they knew that one of them was integral to the Sidhe plan, if they knew not which. Ness, for his part, was left shivering within a barn able to do nothing and feeling helpless as his companions and caretakers were slaughtered before his eyes through the slit in the barn window.

Then the woman came to him again, after so many years, appearing beside him. She spoke quiet words, her eyes glowing with a fey light, and she reminded him of his request, and promised to protect him if only he entered a deeper bargain with her. Desperate, he agreed, and she instructed him to say words of eldritch power. He could feel the power mounting within his body as the words began to shape themselves within his mouth with barely any guidance needed, and at the end of the chant he saw a feline smile cover the Sidhe woman's mouth. "And now, you are mine," she whispered with a smile before everything went black and he felt darkness consume him.

It was a time later that he awoke, several miles from the village as daybreak stole upon the landscape. Even from where he stood, he could see there were no signs of life; a contingent of knights had been sent out by Kenabres to put down the raid, and while they had successfully destroyed the invading demons, they had come too late to save the people who had populated the village. Breaking down and crying, despite being of age now, Ness railed at the woman. Why could she have not saved anyone else? It was so unfair. A rage came about him, and he swore. He would kill them, kill them all, no matter what he must do, no matter what he must sacrifice. The demons had to die for what they had done.

"It is good that you feel that way, for what is done is done," came the voice behind him, and he spun to see the Sidhe woman. She introduced herself to him as the Leanan Sidhe, and that she had bound an aspect of herself to his own spirit, and would use him as a weapon to strike such a blow against the demons that they might never recover. All the while she spoke, the ghost of a smile haunted her lips, tantalizing him with knowledge unspoken, and he glared back. She had used him, and he became certain that he had been the reason that the demons had attacked the sleepy village.

He grew angry with her too, and tried to defy her, but suddenly his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth and she made a tsk sound with the roof of her mouth while shaking a reproachful finger at him. He could feel the geas settle upon him like a heavy winter coat, yet could do nothing about it as she explained that by enacting the ritual, he was now beholden, at least partially, to her will. And so she instructed him to leave the remains of the village and seek like-minded crusaders in Kenabres who might help him in his journey to attempt to defeat the demon armies... or die trying.

Appearance:

Ness himself is a young man just a year or two above the age of twenty. He often wears clothes of his upbringing of natural colors, of browns and greens, though that may be in part due to the influence the Sidhe have upon him. He often comports himself with a grace and surety that may also not be entirely his own, almost as though getting specific instructions unconsciously of how to walk and speak to be enchanting as one of the Sidhe themselves. Upon the back of one hand is a strange mark which mirrors the one on the one who has bound him.

The Leanan Sidhe's shadow, on the other hand, is a creature of such fey power that it is difficult to relate to her whatsoever. As a creature that has seen endless nations rise and fall, and before of the sea sinking to uncover more of the land, she speaks in speech that often belies her true intent, appearing as an impossibly beautiful elvish woman of fey power. She places great store in the practice of politeness, and may often urge Ness to strike down those who appear to speak uncouthly, though since it is not related to the destruction of demons, he has choice in the area and is more forgiving, often quieting her with a look.

Personality:

Ness is generally kind, and particularly has a soft spot for those who have experienced attacks by demons or who have taken part in the crusade, identifying with the first and relating the second to his parents, lost to him for years now and probably dead. He is generally soft-spoken, though when angered he tends towards fits of passion that, while intense, tend to be short-lived and leave him fatigued due to how different they are from his usual tone and demeanor. Rarely a dark nature takes him when he contemplates his own fate and his own enforced captivity at Sidhe hands having no will of his own when it comes to combating the forces of darkness--though in all likelihood, he would do little but follow the path were he left to his own devices.

TheGlyphstone

I'd figure Paizo-designed races would be okay at 13 RP, like aasimar and tieflings - they spend RP on non-optimal stuff, so its actual play value is a bit lower than the number indicates.

Ghostwheel

I would argue that most of the races spent many points relatively on "non-optimal" stuff :-P

I just dropped the SLA, which wasn't necessary for my build, and that took her to 12 RP.  So...a lot easier than I thought it would be.

Updated information for people that are the "build around" type:
Half-Elf, Female, Cleric of Sarenrae
Dex-y healer, focusing on the good-ol' scimitar Sarenrae uses and dervish dance, and lighter armor.
Neutral Good, Touched By Divinity/Hierophant
The daughter of a wealthy merchant and a . . . sort-of repentant drow sellsword. Kinda. It's very complicated.

Ixy

Alyx Ianto
Human Paladin of Arshea

Background
Alyx was born to Kalivi of the Ianto-- her mother, an unmarried Sarkorin, had been relegated to duties tending the burial mounds of her ancestral home when the Worldwound's destruction spread to her lands.  Her mother held to her duties as long as she could, exchanging every currency she owned to tribal warriors, and then the mercenaries that came after, to protect the sacred sites of her forebears until the corruption could no longer be held back.  She found herself among fellow refugees from the north, pregnant and surviving on the barren land.  Turned out by bandits, demons, and mercenaries, the group thinned and regrew with every week's slow travel across northern Numeria, becoming a more motley gang of desperate traders and farmers from more and more cities, tribes, and people.  More refugees fled the Numerian lords, and Kalivi became something of a hero to them-- relentless, courageous, and wise of the land.

Kalivi could travel no more when she reached the outskirts of New Stetven, where her daughter was born to the cloister of Shelyn's mercy.  Her mother lives there still, though enfeebled by a life of exhausting work-- a once-proud counselor and exemplar, she spent her years caring for her daughter and working as a maid and midwife.  Wanting only security for her child, she sent Alyx to study in the cloister of Shelyn, where she hoped her daughter could enter the clergy or, at least, receive enough education to thrive in the urban world.

Alyx, conceived on the road and born into the lowest caste of an unfriendly city, sought justice instead of peace.  She dedicated her life to the martial pursuits of the church of Shelyn, and when they proved pacifists, she dedicated herself instead to finding a new life-- forgoing vows, she sought out the churches of Law, hoping to join the crusades and bring peace to the homeland that her mother had been forced to leave behind.  Her passions wild, she found it difficult to follow the rules, often lashing out against her superiors, challenging herself to the point that harsh lessons were learned by corporal punishment or embarrassing failure.

Her salvation was Arshea, whose visions and visitation guided her to find the church of Liberation, where her passions could run rampant without censure, so long as they were properly aimed.  Beautiful and fierce, she was accepted to the church's service once it was deemed that she had, indeed, been gifted by the lovely god's own grace to free those enslaved by tyranny and defend those threatened by the Worldwound.  Though her foresight often plays second-fiddle to her desperation to serve the righteous, she finds her faith and trust constantly tested and picked apart as she fights side-by-side with the corrupt to stop the most corrupt, struggling to accept that "the ends justify the means".

Though her beauty and prowess in battle get her far with nobles and war-leaders, she has already found herself playing into their hands, becoming part of their schemes to amass power rather than fulfilling the purer purpose of liberating the world's beauty.  She served Lady Hojiti of Numeria for a time-- finding herself in the woman's bed and throne hall before understanding that the people she was fighting to rescue or to defend were only being aided for their wealth or influence, all efforts fueling the greater fire of the Black Sovereign in the end.  She tried to influence the Lady's aims, only to be bandied around between her lord knights, their merchant-lord allies, and their corrupt church of narcotic bliss.

The final straw was when, at Hojiti's behest, she rescued twelve kidnapped citizens from a demon slaver-- only to learn that the slaves were merely concubines, drug-addled sluts bound for Starfall.  In a rage, she destroyed the slavers who came to claim their quarry, and after marching the concubines across the nation to the River Kingdoms, she found that they were as eager to be free of her as she was of them... but at least the poison was out of their systems, and they were feeling again... even rage can bring freedom, and their minds were finally unchained.
***
She turns her eyes toward the Worldwound now, making her way to the crusades in the hopes of finding peace at one end of a sword or the other, to liberate the land and help the nation find beauty once more, the same way she first saw real freedom in the loveliest mist of blood on the wild heather, knowing that the blade brings death, but spills cleansing nourishment for the corrupted world.

Physical Description
Lean and toned, Alyx is physically beautiful and exotic, with her blended heritage favorably gracing her with feminine features standing out from a hardened visage of determination and vigor.  She has auburn hair, shining threads of coppery red in the sun, and skin like finely-tanned leather supple and youthful.  Her eyes are warm and piercing, challenging though pleased by what she sees, and she moves with ease that comes from strength and discipline.  She looks to be barely past twenty years of age, and her accent and mannerism show education balanced with good-natured confidence.

Role
Though she is experienced in negotiation and cosmopolitan practice, her decisions need guidance to ring true.  She is a leader on the battlefield, wading in first and wading through enemies when a shield-bearing veteran would use more caution, but she is unrelenting to achieving the necessary ends-- she tries to maintain the balance of law, but in the heat of battle, all is fair.

Unfinished...
Traits, especially campaign, are yet to be selected.  If guidance is offered, it would be appreciated.

Quote from: FallenDabus on April 03, 2015, 11:24:07 AMInteresting idea! From an in-world continuity point of view, how was it that he was able to master the lycanthropic curse? And from a background perspective, which campaign trait are you taking, and how are you integrating it into this story? Those two things could be linked behind the scenes though, so there's not really a wrong answer there.

Apologies that I didn't get to this sooner!

I had a few ideas, but I was not sure if mastering the lycanthropic curse was possible within the Golarion Setting. Assuming that you are ruling that it is as the DM, I've got one tentative idea.

Now, Veranor lived with the curse for at least a few years; we're talking late teens to however late it could concievably be before he achieved first level. If Scaleheart's didn't take a hit to wisdom, I might have made him a monk instead but that is neither here nor there.

My idea is that after living with the curse for so long and treating it as a disability, he got fed up with his self-loathing lifestyle and resolved to change it or die trying. Now, he was a swamp hermit at this point - not exactly material to walk up to a cleric and beg to be cured. I don't even think it could be undone after seeping into his soul for so long, but he had carried it with him at least long enough to conciously recognize the presence of the were schism of his mind.

So as the lunar cycle begins to wane, he begins intentionally starving himself. Like not eating anything,  but not allowing himself to hibernate either - forcing himself to suffer the hunger as it gnawed at him. By the time that the full moon comes around again, he is half mad from the fasting and the change starts with more pain than he ever felt before. But ironically, this was exactly what he wanted.

He digs deep for some unfathomable force of will and shoves the change / his were side back until it snaps the chains from the stress of his frenzied hunger and the alluring call of the moon. In a metaphorical sense, the twin aspects of his nature go for one another's throat in that instant - except Veranor uses all of this strain to force the two sides to become one.

The curse changed at that point, warped by the perversion of the cycle that he forced. He can't shift into a full animal form any longer, and his mind is strange and alien to civilized creatures. He isn't an aberration, but rather some strange juxtaposition of man and beast. He is no brute, gifted with shrewd cunning and the brutal strength to see his goals realized.

I wanted to take the Stolen Fury campaign trait, since it doesn't seem to be conflicting with anymore. I'm not sure what the payoff for that one is, but it seemed the most fitting as Vera is a big user of combat maneuvers - especially grapple. I would totally dig someone who can get some benefit from me holding a baddie still for flanking.

If you will allow it, I would like your thoughts on my proposed method for breaking free of the moon's curse before I sprinkle in the elements from Stolen Fury - this whole character is a conversion from an OC to pathfinder rules. I originally thought that a witch might have used her patron to break the moon's grip but I personally like this idea better. My only possible concern would be if it is beyond the scope of someone who is at first level or on the cusp of it.

Adena Vishanti

Physical Description: Adena Vishanti is a half-elven woman of about average height, standing at 5'6" with just enough muscle and not enough fat to make her appear a bit lanky and skinny. Her figure could be described as that of a runner or swimmer's figure, with slim hips and a small bust, and smooth angular features. Her skin is somewhat pale like her human father's (With the only non-scar blemish on her body being a birthmark in the shape of a winged ankh on the small of her back just above her left cheek), and she also possesses his bright blue eyes. Her hair is 100% inherited from her Drow mother though, shiny and silky spun silver that pours down to her shoulder blades, usually kept loose save for the small braid at the left side of her face that she wears in honor of her father's Varisian heritage. She dresses the part too, never without fine Varisian silks in earth tones and a stout pair of well-worn traveling boots. Underneath she keeps an even finer set of mithral chain, a gift from her father after she set out to seek out her missing mother. Adena keeps a silver-cast symbol of the Dawnflower around her neck, though she has no true need for it to channel her faith.

Personality: Adena is a bit of an oddity, an island of calm and good cheer amongst the driven and moody warriors fighting against the demonic hordes in Kenabres. As old as some of the veterans of the current generation, Adena has not let the horrors of war and demonic invasion break her spirits, always ready with a kind word and much-needed physical contact for those who have lost their faith. It is her firm belief that in order to help and inspire those around her she must be bright like the sun, and endeavors to live up to the ideals of honesty and compassion. This does tend to make her appear a bit naive and misguided though, as if she is taking the crusades lightly or is too weak to stand with the other faithful. While disheartening, Adena continues to wear her heart on her sleeve and help out with 100% of her being. It is rare for her to truly become angry, this usually only happening when confronted with true depravity, at which point her dervish training comes to the forefront and she fearlessly charges into battle to avenge the suffering innocents. Hilariously, she has a very weak tolerance for alchohol despite her love for it (especially fine Varisian spiced brandy!), and her touchy-feely nature gets even MORE touchy-feely when inebriated. She still hasn't lived down the night she got drunk and draped herself over the famed paladin Irabeth Tirabade and her wife Anevia after a skirmish with a demonic scouting party. Poor girl ended up the butt of many a joke about her tastes in companions after that night, a few months back.

Background: Adena Vishanti is the heiress (one of them anyways) of the Varisian merchant company Vishanti's Exotic Goods, born to a particularly wealthy Varisian merchant and his Drow sellsword bodyguard (and occasional lover, when the coin was right). Her birth was a bit of a happy accident for her mother, finding it to be both a way to level some concessions out of Adena's father and an opportunity to prove that she wasn't some psychotic spider-worshipping witch from the Underdark, by raising her daughter to be a 'good' person. Despite the money-grubbing nature of her father and violent tendancies of her mother, Adena somehow managed to grow up as a remarkably cool-headed and kind individual. Even as a child she had an almost otherworldly feel to her, with an endless capacity for kindness and forgiveness. Even when her mother was teaching her swordplay, Adena had a habit of apologizing to the sellswords she trained with when she got a lucky blow in.

For the first decade or two of her life things were downright great, save for an aching feeling in her chest that she needed to . . . do something. She didn't know what, but she felt that there was something out beyond the merchant world for her to do. After her mother disappeared along with her entire crew during a mission to assist the forces fighting the demonic incursions near Kenabres, the half-breed girl truly felt the call of Sarenrae for the first time. Not only did her mother need her help, but there were countless suffering people as a result of the demons invading Golarion. It was . . . difficult to convince her father that she needed to leave to help prepare for the next crusade (whenever that would be), but she eventually managed to do so (only after he weighed her down with some exceptional gear and a large coinpurse). Traveling with a shipment of goods being sent to reinforce the anti-Worldwound forces.

For the next two decades she moved from city to city, from group to group, assisting where she could by easing peoples' pains and saving their lives along with the other faithful of Sarenrae. It was from them that she learned the skills of a dervish, and the proper rites of worship, the birthmark on her body being seen as a good portent for her future in the clergy. The last ten years have in fact kept her based in Kenabres, putting her skills to good use with the increase in demonic attention to the city and it's damaged Wardstone. There were many that saw her silver hair as a possible sign of 'witchcraft' or demonic infiltration, but those accusations are a dime a dozen and her position in the church of Sarenrae has kept too much negative attention away from her. In the end, she's working on becoming strong enough to take the fight to the demons, hoping to one day either find her missing mother . . . or her mother's remains. Sadly, nobody yet has been able to confirm or deny what had happened to the beautiful dusky-skinned sellsword twenty years back.

I've got a DELIGHTFUL Jade Regent game IRL, every Monday night. The glorious adventures of Amaya the Aasimar Paladin with her giant adamantine hammer Hraesvelgr! Eledrami, the Elf Druid with a giant wolf (Who I've lovingly named puppy) and the ability to turn into a freaky giant cat monster and eat Oni! And most importantly, Amatatsu Tsubame, Human Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster who is the heir to the throne of Minkai, and utterly utterly useless!

My role in the party is apparently to have cool visions about the plot that she always misunderstands, flirt with the paladin, Ameiko, and Shalelu incessantly, and make magic items while we roll our caravan across the high ice. I kicked the shit out of a Half-Fiend Sylph and a White Dragon though. And then there was that one time (Before I got a sentient sword that yells at me when I try to be too rogue-y and dishonorable) when I snuck up behind the evil witch boss and disintigrated her with a crit/sneak attack scorching ray. I mean, after that her husband impaled me and got me to -8, but then the paladin comforted and healed Tsubame and all was right with the world. <3

You should look into Pathfinder Society, it helps. They've got a comprehensive list of what is and isn't allowed. And it gets updated fairly regularly, but the best part if finding a group to run with. Even if it is just one day a month. But it helps connect you to others who might be interested in house games.

Ditto, though more like 3 years for me. And in the country I currently reside in, there are no PF Society games running or FLGS :-\

Blinkin

I've tried looking for a group via PFS. As hard as it may be to believe, there are no games listed within 3 hours of me, and a 3 hour ride would be impossible with current conditions, and way too far to go for a couple of hours of role-playing. I haven't had a table-top game in going on 5 years and while I miss it, you would think that it's back in the 80's when everyone was afraid that being a role-player might get you burned by the local church for satanism.

Hell, I've never seen a hobby shop that carried role-playing supplies that wasn't in the darkest corner of a basement of the worst strip mall you could find. People actually seem to hide from the light of day, so finding a local group to play anything is nearly impossible. There is a D&D 5.0 game going on, but believe it or not, you can't keep up with where they're meeting from week to week and no one seems to actually knows who's playing in it. That's how bad it is here... in a college town with no less than 7 universities within 90 minutes of me.

The world is one screwed up place. I'd kill for a whiff of paper and ink with the raddle of dice.

I'd figure Paizo-designed races would be okay at 13 RP, like aasimar and tieflings - they spend RP on non-optimal stuff, so its actual play value is a bit lower than the number indicates.
Yeah, both of them are fine. The Aasimar irritate me a little, since they have a double +2 with no -2, unlike the tiefling, but they are so iconic to this AP that I wouldn't put a fuss up about it.

Add my Gunslinger Paladin to the list as well - background is in progress, once I get it out of my head and into text.

EDIT: Can I squeeze a Drawback in to get an extra trait? Overprotective fits extremely well backstory-wise, and I've belatedly realized I need UMD training via a trait to heal myself with the wand I bought.

Sorry, really don't like drawbacks and you already start with three traits as it is.

Man, I'd hate to live where you do Blinkin. All of the FLGS in cities I've lived in are bright, open and happy places.

Damn. I'll have to give up Called then - pity, that 1/day re-roll a natural one would have been real nice to avoid misfires.

EDIT: Unless you really will okay the partially charged wands thing. :D That will let me give up Just Like New, and still start the game with a real pistol instead of a busted-ass one. I just can't scrounge up the cash at level 2 to be able to heal myself (with a full power wand) AND have a functional gun AND armor. A half-strength Inflict Light Wounds wand would last me through to level 3, where I'll get Lay on Hands and be able to take Light-Touched Soul. It's a much less clunky option than hauling around a bag full of Inflict potions.

I've yet to get past the first act of the first book of this AP, since RL usually prevents us from going too far into the game. I think it would have been a brutal combat though. We had 3 paladins, a Cleric, an Inquisitor, and a Rogue.

I live in the bible belt buckle of the south-east. What makes it suck so bad is that we had 2 universities in the big games in the last month and we have 3 of the better medical schools (Not to mention law schools) in that 90 mile ring. You would think that such enlightened fields as sports, medicine and law would smile upon role-playing... wait... nevermind, I just mentioned people who think Nascaris only watched because a bunch of good ol' boys are driving fast and making left turns... Alright. Let's see how this flies.

Arlais the Foretold Maislen
Female archon-blooded aasimar (lawbringers) oracle 2 (Pathfinder RPG Advanced Player's Guide 42, Pathfinder RPG Advanced Race Guide 84)
CG Medium outsider (native)

Arlais has spent most of her life being prepared for a grand destiny. Everyone she has ever known, her entire family and an assortment of others have held her up to high standards, placed her on a pedestal and generally made her out to be a hero of some sort of grand stature.

The reality is rather more down-to-earth, and for an Aasimar, almost ... human.
Arlais' golden eyes are more like amber caboshons, and she takes great pains to conceal the fact that she really can't see very well past a certain distance. Physically, Arlais is a delicate young woman, tougher and faster than she looks, but overall, not an immediate threat; in fact, she barely registers.
Arlais' delicate features are framed by a wavy cloud of vivid red hair, tipped at the ends with gold. She usually wears it pulled back in a neat braid to keep it out of her way, whatever she's doing.
She wears plain clothing, with her family's crest and the symbol of the Dawnflower worked into it somewhere or other.

Arlais is fairly certain that, whatever she is, she isn't a hero. She'd much rather spend a day braiding wire, or hammering silver than practice hitting people with sticks, and tends to spend most of her time in the infirmary, bandaging wounds and listening; she's a good enough healer as a result that no one minds it. She has a strong concept of what is 'right', and a powerful sense of justice from her Archon blood, but given a choice, she'd rather talk than fight. Sent here, practically on the lip of the Worldwound, of all the bloody places, she's not so sure her family doesn't have the right idea; neither is she sure she's the one to strike that hammer-blow, whatever 'everyone' says.

Exposed to Awfulness or Stolen Fury are your best best for your campaign traits from a story point of view.

Thank you for that suggestions.  I definitely think you're right, and both traits would work well for her background and overall concept... good may be pretty on the outside, but passion can leave carnage in its wake.

I can see either campaign trait working for the character--Stolen Fury, I think, would work the best, as there are so many opportunities for cultists to have appeared in a corrupted kingdom.

For Exposed to Awfulness, I'm not as certain, but I could certainly work it out.  By the time she was born, if I'm imagining this right, they would have been far from the wardstones and living in an urban environment, so the thought of being in the wilds and encountering a demon is tough to work in.  However it would have perhaps been possible that she was spirited from the city against her will, or that her mother had tried to flee the city at some point and she was taken.

I plan to select two more traits tonight, and I will write a couple brief scenarios for her backstory, one for each campaign trait.  Thanks again--

Hmm, it is an interesting idea, and a liberal sprinkling of the reading esoteric texts would make it thematically appropriate to have the physical deprivation of asceticism to unleash a spiritual change, if not breaking, of the curse. It does seem a bit of a stretch for a first level character though... although I suppose that that could be justified by the fact that this character is soon to have a Mythic destiny. It may also help if the change occurred after the Stolen Fury rite.

I would be okay with a partially charged wand. I will also point out that if you get picked, you will be getting a very not-busted-ass pistol at about the time you hit third level, and I intend (as usual) for that to come quickly, although we'll see how it goes.

Stolen Fury works then. If you change your mind, keep in mind that while the trait describes the demon that attacked you having slipped past the wardstones, any demon, Worldwound  or not, will do for this trait.

A question for you, since google wasn't exactly helpful. Do you mean that he would have had to read religious texts ala the bible? Or something from monk traditions, like how they draw strength from the abstinence of what they swear into/against. I would really prefer the latter. I have nothing against organized religions, but I feel like it would lessen my character's struggle if he accomplished this through fasting in hope for the favor of some deity rather than his inner mettle and strength.

I actually imagine him as a bit of a monk-like man, but the curse has made it difficult to properly focus his ki - preventing him from being a monk. (On the OOC side trying to play a monk with a racial negative to wisdom and no dex bonus is weird).

A question on the fact it's a stretch for a first level character. The afflicted were template adds a LA+1 to the afflicted, is it more plausible that he was level 0 when he was afflicted, but achieved first or second level while afflicted - having the levels convert when he lost the template? I did intend for the ritual to involve him happening before he reclaimed himself from the moon's grip. The one that gives him Stolen Fury, that is.

I will be back soon, wanted to ask these before I forgot.

It's still a work in progress, but here's what i've got so far!

Name: Piper Tillikwhistle
Class: Wizard 2
Race: Gnome
Background Trait: Riftwarden Orphan
Character Sheet: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=147859

Concept: Piper's not a crusader. No holy warrior or deed-doer. She's a librarian, a student of spells, who has come to Kenabres in the hopes of learning more about her parents and hteir disappearance. However, after her time spent with a troop of Iomedean crusaders north to Mendev, she's been inspired to see what she can do to help along the way. She has no idea what lay ahead...

Character Background

Piper was raised in the city of New Stetven, by a pair of gnomes who supplied the city's growing middle class with high-quality glasswork. At the side of Mordelthun and Aidi Tillikwhistle, Piper learned some of the basics of shaping and polishing glass, and the interesting things you can add to it to make new colors or refraction. But as young gnomes are, Piper was too curious to sit and learn to do a job! Especially one that someone was already doing.
And so, she was often out exploring the city. There was always something new and interesting to see. Unfortunately these adventures had a downside; gnomes as a whole were uncommon in New Stetven, and some saw them as targets... Piper often had to evade one particular band of hooligan boys who thought the young gnome was a fine target for harassment and taunting. it was either that, or stay cooped up inside (what? tell her parents? piper's no snitch!)
It was one such encounter that would change her course entirely. it was a spring day, and the roads of New Stetven were slick with half-melted slush. Piper ran through those streets as fast as her short legs could go, a foursome of Brevan boys hot on her heels. it was only by the luck of a few tight turns and dives that she had evaded them, and security was just ahead! She ran through a rickety old door, and pressed her back to it, the hems of her garments dripping cold dirty puddles on the floor.
All around her were books. Stacks and shelves of books. Books bound and unbound. illuminated manuscripts, dusty with age, and newly-written pamplets, often-read. And hunched over a writing desk on the far side, a wizened old human man glowering disapprovingly at the cold, soaked gnome who had just burst into his home. In his creaky voice, he told her to leave; she refused, and just as hte old man stood, the youths outside thumped on the door and demanded she come out, calling taunts and threats.
Piper gasped at the change that overcame the old man - he stood straight and threw back his wool mantle, striding to the door with purpose. All she knew was that the man spoke in a menacing tone to the boys, and came back in. "They won't bother you anymore, girl. Now clean up and begone." When she spun her cantrip to dry herself and the puddle of meltwater she had brought in with her, the old man lifted a hand. "It's still cold out. Stay and warm up. We might as well find some work for you..."
And so began her apprenticeship with the wizard Doerval. She cleaned, she organized, she cataloged, all for the price of various glass experiments her father came up with; Doerval was fascinated with light, and the various shades and refraction the gnome glaziers came up with were sufficient for his time. But more than just let Piper be his librarian, he began teaching her the arts; Starting with her inborn gnomish talents, heguided her to further cantrips, and how to imbue these tricks into scrolls. From there, into books... and then more potent spells.
it was in an old tome that she found something curious; a treatise on guarding against planar incursions, marked with a curious spiral on hte inside cover - a spiral, not too unlike the odd birthmark Piper had on one side of her thigh. Asking the elderly wizard about it just resulted in him covering his eyes and admonishing her to go ask her parents. So she did.
   They weren't her parents.
No, Mordelthun and Aidi looked at each other uneasily, and sat down with their daughter to explain things. No, they were her great aunt and uncle, on her mothers' side. her mother was Della Tillikwhistle, and her father was Fezorbolt Millerbrot. They were wizards, you see... Riftwardens, and had gotten called away on urgent business not long after Piper's birth. Beyond this, they knew little more, other than the town her parents had gone to was in far-off Mendev...
She was a little hurt by the fact that hte people she had considered her parents had deceived her for so long... but she understood. So long had passed, she knew that her parents... probably were no longer in this world. And why-ever that is, must be terribly dangerous. But piper was determined to find out more. She's been on the crusader Road with a contingent of would-be crusaders for the journey into Mendev, with little more than her spellbook in hand.

Per the description Exposed to Awfulness is actually pretty open for multiple characters, just requiring a common relative somewhere in their lineage.  My background implies its a shapechanging demon, so probably pretty easy to work in.  That said, even my history - which was obviously heavily influenced by the trait's story - could easily be tweaked for an alternative.

Name: Keirnan Landrey
Class: Cleric 1/Oracle 1
Race: Aasimar
Background Trait: Chance Encounter
Character Sheet: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=148258

Concept: Keirnan is a likeable, dashing(if somewhat clueless) champion for freedom and libations...I mean, liberation.  He travels frequently, and makes friends with most people he meets, learning about their towns and telling them stories of his own adventures.  His divine cause to fight the demons and other forces of evil is met with enthusiasm and panache, for, in his eyes, one doesn't have to sacrifice showmanship in order to garner victory!

Personality: Kiernan is a dashing, if somewhat ditzy, fellow, who enjoys listening to good music, a well-spun tale or a well-crafted ode, almost as much as he enjoys drinking, feasting and making love.  His devotion to his faith, and those deities he follows, is steadfast, as is his commitment to the concept of freedom, love and adventure.  His charm and daring are known far and wide, and while he has left behind lovers in every town he's been to, he couldn't be called a heartbreaker.  He's careful with his relationships, caring for more than just the physical pleasures, and his partners always know that they'll remain special to him, even though he can't stay with them.  His reputation as a lover is almost as prevalent as his prowess in battle, or his legendary hedonism.  He never turns down an exciting game of chance, and he's known as a gracious loser, and a generous winner.  His generosity, in fact, is widely known, and when rumors spread that he is in town, the taverns fill with people who know his habit of buying rounds for everyone.

Description: Kiernan's most immediately recognizable feature is his flowing blonde hair, typically drawn back in a neat ponytail, which reaches the small of his back and shines dimly with an inner, golden light.  This glow is most noticeable at night or in dimly-lit, or dark, places, and doesn't shine bright enough to illuminate enough to aid vision.  Though, it does create a potential problem if he's trying to avoid being seen in the dark, or if an enemy chooses to attack, since he's the easiest to pick out in such situations.  He stands quite tall, at six-foot-three and his build is more willowy than one might expect, a fact which is enhanced by his tailored clothing and penchant for flowing lines.  He cuts a dashing figure with a smooth, masculinely beautiful face and sage green eyes which glitter with good humor and an unrestrained lust for life.  His gestures are grand and graceful, and he seems to take up more room than he should, filling the area around him with his confidence and boundless energy.  When he speaks, his voice resonates from his slender chest with a velvety rumble, which, no matter how much he drinks, seems to never become marred by a drunken slur.

Background: Kiernan was born to wealthy traders in Absalom, which came as a shock, given the shining crown of golden curls and pale skin he was born with.  Once the surprise had worn off, his mother recalled a family legend of an angelic being who fell in love with one of her male ancestors and gave birth to his son.  Until Kiernan was born, she had merely assumed it was a kind of family fairy tale, but it was hard to deny the proof in her own child.

The awe they felt for their offspring soon wore off, however, and became the more conventional and sustainable love that most parents have for their children.  It was hard to maintain a feeling of holy reverence for a creature that one had to bathe, change and burp after every meal.  Despite his seeming divine origins, Kiernan was a typical little boy, prone to chasing girls and pushing them into the mud, or pretending to sword fight with other boys using sticks, and, while he was certainly different in appearance and more graceful than the other children, it didn't take long for them to accept him.  He was gregarious and friendly by nature, and he lacked the selfishness and entitlement which plagued many other wealthy singletons.  He was just as happy playing with the children of servants using things like rocks and twigs as he was playing with other wealthy children using expensive toys.  His imagination was limitless and he had a grand love of adventure.

His devotion to Cayden Cailean began at a very young age, when stories of the 'accidental god' fueled his love of adventure and daring, setting him on the path that would define the rest of his life.  He dreamed of one day following in Cayden's footsteps and passing the test of the Starstone, and could often be found tucked among the crowds that gathered to watch hopefuls cross the pit to the Starstone Cathedral.  When he was ten years old, Kiernan accompanied his parents to Kenabres, where they were planning to spend several days in the city, selling their goods to those who were flocking from all over to attend the festival of Armasse.  Despite their dire warnings not to wander off, Kiernan strayed from their booth in the market place in his desire to explore the new and unusual city.  Before either of his parents knew it, Kiernan was lost in the crowd and completely caught up in his own excitement, thus unable to even contemplate the terror his wandering would cause.

For hours he roamed the city, until, as night was beginning to fall, he found himself outside the walls and, before he knew it, he had wandered into the Worldwound and very far from those who might have kept him safe.  Luckily, he was found by a woman who protected him from harm and escorted him back to safety, leaving him where he would swiftly be found by a band of crusaders dedicated to Shelyn.  They took him back to town and helped him to find his parents, who were absolutely sick with worry.  After the requisite hugging, scolding and crying was over, and he was bundled into a chair with a glass of milk and something to eat, Kiernan regaled his parents with the story of the sad-eyed woman and her strange holy symbol.  They explained that the symbol was Desna's, and donated a large sum of money to her temple the very next day, praising her for sending someone to save their blessed child from the horrors that existed in the world wound.

The rest of Kiernan's life was largely uneventful.  When he was old enough, he joined the clerics of Cayden Cailean in Absalom, and dedicated himself to upholding the principals of his faith, as well as destroying the forces of evil that imprisoned and corrupted the good people of Golarion.  His parents passed when he was still quite young, at least for an Aasimar, and he grieved their passing, but his lust for life and the knowledge that they had lived long and well did not allow him to wallow in his sadness for long.  Once his training was complete, he ventured from Absalom to begin traveling all over the Inner Sea regions, learning what he could, and carousing without restraint, as he knew would best please his hero and deity.  It wasn't until his path intersected that of a wicked slaver who was imprisoning magical creatures for his own evil purposes that Kiernan found his true calling.

After defeating the slaver and freeing the creatures he'd ensnared, Kiernan felt a powerful force rush through him, knocking him on his eyes and dropping him into a deep, dreamless sleep for several days.  When he awoke, he understood that it was no longer his calling to serve Cayden as his divine warrior, but to serve all of the gods who had impacted his life.  He devoted himself to the cause of freedom, and those deities who had, either directly or indirectly, served to ensure his own freedom and happiness.  Desna, Shelyn and Cayden Cailean became his personal pantheon, and the divine forces which fueled his newfound powers.  His focus of study became the Wind, for its strength and the fact that no one had yet learned how to restrain it or pin it down.

Kiernan is in Kenabres once more, attending the festival of Armasse on the anniversary of his first and only visit to the great walled city on the edge of the Worldwound.

Buddhism and Hinduism would both take issue with the idea that religious texts have to be about the divinity of a god, rather than the nature of the soul. Either work, but the idea that scripture is only about the gods is very, very far from truth in our own world, let alone in one where gods and souls demonstrably exist.

I fail to see how the afflicted lycanthrope template is LA +1 when pathfinder doesn't actually use level adjustments. I've done my own conversions, but even then, I'm pretty sure that the thrope templates work out to be much higher than that. I don't think it makes a big difference either way. If you want to portray him as having lost power when he altered the curse, go for it.

-blush.-  Thanks, Darkling!  I was referring to Branded.

I've also since changed to a male Cleric/Oracle of Cayden Cailean.

I'm not so sure about that one. I don't think it would be an equivalent disadvantage as the other core curses in this campaign. Sorry.

I was told that having CR+1 meant that a PC that is afflicted meant he got a level adjustment from monster hit die. It seems that I was told wrongly, so I apologize for that.

CR stands for Challenge Rating. It is completely different from Level Adjustment, which no longer exists with Pathfinder.

I'm not sure if you were aware... but if you're mostly going for theme, there is a race in pathfinder called "Skinwalkers" - basically like lesser lycanthropes. One of them are werecrocodile skinwalkers, called "Scalehearts."

Name: Roland Mourningstar
Class: Paladin (Holy Gun) 1/Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) 1
Race: Dhampir
Background Trait: Touched By Divinity
Character Sheet: http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=147507

Character Background

Belka Morningstar was a knight of Sarenrae, a crusader devoted to cleansing evil from the world in all its forms. She was a great champion of the Dawnflower, famed both for her victories in battle and her successes at bringing even the darkest of souls back into the light, but her greatest challenge - and ultimately, her downfall - came when she met the vampire Varash. Once a paladin himself, the vampire lord had fought helplessly against his hungers for decades; when he was confronted and defeated by Belka, he begged her help in achieving the redemption he had long sought. Swayed by his earnesty, she agreed, and they developed a close partnership that eventually swelled into love even as Varash inched his way closer to purification. When Belka became pregnant, it seemed to be nothing less than a direct blessing from Sarenrae, and they celebrated as such.

But when the day of the child's birth came, disaster struck. Foolishly, Varash had chosen to fast in prayer before his child was born, leaving him weak and hungry. The first faint cries of the pale and sickly-looking newborn warmed his dead heart, but the scent of rich and fresh birthing blood drew his hunger. In a berserk frenzy, he mortally savaged his would-be bride and sponsor, drinking deep of her blood and that of the midwives before fleeing in grief-stricken horror. Taken from the arms of his dying mother, the infant was put into care as a ward of the church, and given the name Roland in honor of a fallen martyr.

It was a difficult childhood for the half-breed dhampir boy, growing up in a temple dedicated to a god of light and fire. The other ward-children did not go out of their way to be cruel, but Roland was nonetheless excluded by virtue of his pale complexion, smooth features, and weak constitution. Worse, he found participating in the rituals and rites of the temple school to be painful to the point of agony, his undead heritage unnaturally sensitive to positive energy, and his nights were plagued with dreams of fiery wings and harsh golden light. Instead, Roland often wandered the town where the temple stood, finding odd things to watch wherever he could seek shelter from the sunlight. His favorite haunt became a tinker's workshop, where he was put to work doing minor repairs once the owner grew accustomed to the pale and quiet child. A former marshal of Alkenstar's judiciary, the tinker spent long hours regaling tales of his own adventures dispensing justice through the barrel of a gun, capturing Roland's attention even as the boy became a young man and his dreams grew ever more turbulent. Frail of frame, hateful of his monstrous father, and wracked with self-doubt towards the circumstances of his orphaning, Roland knew he could never pledge himself to the dervishes of Sarenrae. But as a lone hero, he could bring vengeance in his own fashion and pay off a small piece of the debt he owed the world for the cost of his existence.

A battered pistol salvaged from the junk heaps became his first gun, sent off with the old tinker's blessing and a pouch of shot and powder. He became a wandering hero for hire, following rumors of undead activity amidst the hamlets and villages of the countryside. Purifying haunted graveyards, hunting would-be necromancers, and sealing breached crypts of forgotten peoples were his stock in trade, but he never really felt satisfied; with another outbreak of the living dead always on the horizon, it felt as if his self-imposed crusade of penance had no end or even an impact on the world. But Roland had no answer, not until one night when he received not a dream, but a vision - an angel who claimed to speak for the empyreal lord Ragathiel, the source of Roland's dreams. Roland's quest would indeed never end, nor be more than a consistent thorn in the side of evil. He could choose to pursue it anyways, doing good on the small scale and frittering his long life away one zombie outbreak at a time. Or, he could accept the offer now being extended to him from Ragathiel, who saw potential in the young dhampir and an echo of the divine lord's own divided past. If he took Ragathiel's blessing, swearing to the principles of chivalry and duty alongside the vengeance already in his heart, he would travel to the Worldwound and the city of Kenabres. There, he would be able to strike at true evil, and possibly make a true difference. This would not be a long life, but it would be a meaningful one; without hesitation, Roland agreed. This was the destiny he had sought - redemption for his poisoned lineage in battle, and likely in death.

Intended Party Role: Fighter/Frontliner. He's a little squishy right now in AC, but he'll be getting much tougher after a few levels. He'll be up close and personal with his pistol anyways, his high HP and excellent saves will help keep him functional, and his high damage output means he will be 'sticky' for enemies.

Well Emeric is also built for combat too.

The traditional four-person party is a tank/fighter, a rogue/skillmonkey, a cleric/healer, and a wizard/arcane caster. Rogues also do combat, yes (everyone does combat, technically) but their 'party role' in the 4-class dynamic is typically the skillmonkey. This is not a chart of 'everything you can do in a party', else I'd be doubling as a Divine Caster with my Lay on Hands - it's a chart of which of the four available slots you are looking to occupy.

EDIT: I give up.

Blinkin

Lydia is more a ranged combat/support character with some skill monkey opportunities. A scout and non-magical healer, but mainly a ranged character... oh, and eventually, adding an animal companion to the mix and some light magic too.

I don't like it either. But the DM specifically said they were planning on it by default, so this was meant to help with comparisons. Hence why my light-armored ranged fighter is applying to be a 'tank' in the frontliner spot, because it's the best-fit option.

I just dont do it on Elli. Theres always that little voice in the back of my head that someone is going to assume I'm trying to be... creepy, and it might cause unnecessary drama.

Bibliophilia

I can totally understand that, Darkling.  I used to play a short kinfolk in a Werewolf: The Apocalypse game, she was like 4'5"?  Something like that.  Anyway, there was this crazy woman who joined the game and her character flipped it's shit over the fact that my short, not-at-all child-like, character was mated with someone.  She kept trying to act like it was somehow dirty, just because I was playing a character that was kind of short.  -rolls eyes.-

I wouldn't have thought anything of the player, except she was this total slut-shaming, uptight, insane chick OOC, too, so it didn't feel like the character was just weird, but that she was using the character to express her own bizarre bullshit.

ChaoticSky

Heh, never run into one of those types myself thankfully *makes the Elder Sign*. But I have had people who get put off when my gnomes make gooey eyes at romancable NPCs and such, so isnt hard to follow the logic to erotic games. Argo i avoid it.

I suppose that being hit by the same escaped demon would count as a connection? I didn't specify what demon, so if anyone wants to try to work out a connection with Lydia, I'm happy to do so. Perhaps they crossed paths at some point, compare notes and "Hey! It's the same guy!" sort of thing? Shared experiences bring them together? I'm open to suggestions and offerings. PM me!

The character as a whole wouldn't have crossed paths with Lydia, but I suppose it's possible that Breaker-of-Chains (the Eidolon, not the PC) might have encountered the demon at some point (demons themselves are immortal in PF, right, or at least around for a while?), so there's some possibilities for a connection there. I suppose it'd fit quite well into the whole dynamic of 'big forces over our (the PCs) heads, and we're stuck in the middle/victims of their plans' thing - Erakasyne drafted onto one outsider's side, and Lydia being attacked by another, might give 'em something in common. What kind of demon were you looking at?

Ditto. Halflings I can sort of understand in a warped way, since they are described sometimes as looking like human children. But gnomes, at best, look like little people.

ChaoticSky

I never said it made sense, just that I have run into it before and decided that it was simpler to not rock the boat and risk offending someone when doing RPs here on E.

To be honest, I've never considered a specific type or kind of demon. Just a generic demon was implied mainly because Lydia wouldn't of known one kind from another one at the time  and was probably too tramatized to consider it.  My idea was "It was big, black with horns, big pointy teeth and smelled like rotten eggs.... oh, and it had claws... did I mention the claws?"

Hell, I've never payed much attention to what kind of demons appear in a game because I rarely have the material to go looking it up. It's a demon... Kill it! lol

As best as I can recall, the trait, nor AP information never mentioned that a demon escaping the wards ran out and back in again, so it could of been out roaming the world for decades or more.

A wild character sheet appears! Still need to finish the bio

Name: Sarah Avorn
Bio
History: Shattered Life

Sarenrae's Burning Hand Monestary - Near the boundaries of the Worldwound

Sarah opened her eyes to darkness... much like the dreamless sleep she had awoken from. You would think that after everything that happened to her, she would have nightmares, or at leased not be able to sleep. Even now she could feel the press of unknown flesh against her own (and what did it say about her that it didnt even bother her anymore?) though it was oddly cool... She blinked; the bodies against her's were cold and clammy, they didn't move... not even to breathe, and weighed down on her, and while she ached... she didn't think she had been used in a while. She raised her arms and pushed as much as she could. What she felt were... limbs, bodies, more than one, and none made so much as a sound, not even as she shoved them around. Panic and vague horror pierced her detached state as her subconscious realized something her conscious mind absolutely refused to accept.

The young monk flailed blindly, kicking and shoving in wild, silent panic, eventually dislodging enough bodies to open a hole to the sky above... or what was left of it, and dragged herself free of the pile of... corpses. She couldnt help turn her gaze back the mass shed just crawled out of, one part of her noting how the top-most layer of bodies was badly burned, while the ones underneath were less and less so, that must be how she survived... While another part of her brain distantly noted the identities of  the people there, even the badly burned ones she could tell, they had been after all, her family, both by blood and by bond. Most had been desecrated, their flesh carved up into profane sigils, eyes and tongues cut away... Bile abruptly rose in her throat, and Sarah turned, falling to her knees as she vomited up her last 'meal'. Not that the thick liquid that splattered over the stones, stained yellow by her stomach's humour, had ever been food.

Shakily rising back to her feet, the young monk looked around for the first time, she was in the monastery’s courtyard, once a wide open expanse where they had raised crops and trained, it had been turned into a battle ground, then a demonic funhouse... and now it was abandoned, nothing but bodies, refuse and the occasional bit of scrap. The monastery gates, smashed open and barely dangling from their hinges, stood on the far end, while nearer at hand, the gates to the inner-keep were similarly smashed.

Admittedly, she herself wasnt in any better condition ('Gates smashed!' A voice laughed hysterically somewhere in the back of her mind), her robe hung about her body in soiled tatters,  mostly ripped away below the waist, and at the front, and the back was shredded by sharp, gripping claws... but somehow it stayed together as a piece of clothing, just enough frayed threads to keep it in one piece. It was worse than being naked, but at the same time, she couldnt bring herself to take it off. Her thigh length hair was... soiled, what wasnt matted together by the dried fluids of her tormentors, or stained by ash and dirt, hung in thick greasy ropes from her skull. At least they hadn't cut it. Her body was... caked in the evidence of her suffering, she could feel the dried patches between her legs and ass, on her stomach, chest, back and face, she could feel them crinkle every time she moved. Worse, she could feel it within her, feel it shift when she stood up, and already fluid that was anything but her own was gently oozing from her.. broken gate. Her jaw hurt, everything ached, and what didnt ache was sore, her mind was flowing like syrup.

They had been in many ways, simple folk. Sarah, for her part, had been born to the monastery, her parents had been monks, and their parents before them. But there were many others, some came seeking to turn over a new leaf, others came seeking enlightenment, some came seeking strength. Sometimes people who followed the Goddess in other ways would come, seeking to expand their understanding. They woke at dawn to greet the sun, meditated in the early morning rays, ate breakfast, then studied musty scrolls of theology and philosophy. Afterwards they would eat lunch, then train and work the fields until the sun set, eat a twilit dinner, bathe in the hot spring, and  finally retire for the night. Then do it all again the next day. A disconnected thought flitted through her mind as she looked up at the setting sun. Tonight I will be bathing alone....

The sickly-sweet scent of rot caught her nose and the young monk would have thrown up again if there had been anything left to lose. The comfort of ritual pierced the haze of her mind, someone had to prepare the bodies, and there was no one left but her. Glassy-eyed, she fired up the kiln the monastery used for cremations, collected the nearest body, composed it the best she could and then tossed it into the fire. There were prayers to say, and ritual to follow, but young Sarah did not know them, she hoped the cremation would be enough. Body after body went into the furnace; Mother, Father, Master, Brother, Friend, Teacher, and more... so many more. Before long they all began to blurr together.. none were whole, every body had been desecrated by the demonic invaders, their faces carved, or missing, or any number of other things.... the denizens of the abyss lacked not for creativity and never again would Sarah be able to picture those she loved whole and hale.

She worked long into the night and when her grisly task was done, the young monk shambled over to the open-air cave that the hotspring waters collected in, and sat quiet and alone in a place that had once been so full of laughter and life. She scrubbed away the filth that she had been covered in, then the ash from the furnace that had covered that.... then kept scrubbing until the waters around her were pink and her flesh was raw and sore.

Sarah didnt remember returning to her room, but she awoke with the dawn, on her cot, wearing fresh clothing... not hers, it was sized too big, but looking around her sacked and half-burned room, she was not surprised that none of her own robes had survived. Out of habit, if nothing else she headed for the chaple, through the shattered inner doors, deep into the heart of the Monastery.... and found the doors sealed. Confusion curled in her gut, why would the doors still be closed? She reached out and felt power flicker under her fingers, but it did not stop her, and she pushed... the doors creaked loudly in the silent monastery, revealing the shrine within.

It was... pristine. The demons had been warded away somehow and not a single thing was askew. The sitting cushions still ringed out from the shrine, the solid gold statuette of Sarenrae still stood on the white stone altar, there was even a brazier with slow-burning incense smoking off to the side. Sarah, shocked by the untouched state of this most holy of places, stepped quietly past her usual spot and slowly lowered herself onto the front-most cushion, right in front of the shrine. She sat there for a long time, not praying, not thinking, just... sitting there.

It finally hit her then, the loss and the grief and the survivor's guilt and everything else. The young monk seemed to collapse in on herself, crumpling up and falling forward until her forehead touched the floor. There she cried until tears would no longer come, her pain filled  howls echoing in the silence. But in her grief, something else was born, and Sarah's eyes snapped up to the golden statuette as she pushed herself up off the floor, “Why?” she asked, and when no answer seemed forthcoming, she asked again, volume rising; “Why!?”. If this place could be kept safe, then obviously her family and everyone else could have been safe too. Surely a being as powerful as Sarenrae was enough to handle a band of middling demons, if she was so good, why wouldnt she have stood by and watched them all die? A servant, a sign, intervention, allies, anything. But she had done nothing. Sarah reeled inside and out at the revelation, she felt sick, and vaguely realized she was still yelling, vision blurring with fresh tears, she lashed out.

Saying she 'woke up' wouldn't be correct, she had been fully conscious the whole time, rather she returned to find the shrine completely wrecked. The pillows had been shredded, the alter knocked over, the coverings on the walls were smouldering and embers of perfumed wood were scattered liberally across the floor. The idol  was on the floor, streaked with blood, it had been buckled, its wings bent, it had been beaten against the stone until it was almost unrecognisable. Sarah stood there for a moment her hands were cut and beginning to swell around broken bones, the corner of her lips twitched, and then she turned away...

A Chance Encounter
She walked out. Out of her faith, out of the shrine, out of the monastery, out into the hills that surrounded it. She kept walking, barely noticing as she passed the boundary of the Worldwound, she kept walking until she passed out from thirst and hunger, having not eaten anything in days and thrown up what they had fed her.

By all rights, that should have been the end of her, but a chance encounter saved her life. She was discovered by a woman, a ranger of some sort, the woman fed and watered her and helped guide her away from the roaming demons. When that failed, she slew them with a bow and arrow.

In time the woman guided her to a boarder patrol, Templars from Mendev, and vanished moments before they arrived. She was brought back to the city, healed and relayed the destruction of the Monastery to the  local church of Sarenrae, they offered her a place to stay of course, but Sarah turned them down. Never again would she put her faith in the gods, she would make her own way, stand on her own two feet. She continued her training, stripped of the philosophical and religions elements, raw physic training. She trained as hard as her body could take, and on the few occasions she had extra money, would train even beyond that and pay for healing after. She found work, there were surprisingly many opportunities for a girl with a comely face, strong arms and few scruples in Kenebras.

Though Sarah cleaves firmly away from religion, she recalls and idolizes the mysterious woman that saved her. She held a vigil for almost a year, hoping to see her saviour again, but the woman never turned up in Kenebras, nor had she ever found any creditable individuals who claimed to know her. This has lead the young monk to conclude that the woman must live (or lived) in the Worldwound, waging a one-woman campaign against demonkind. Such a life appeals to Sarah's notions of duty and vengeance, and she prepares for the day when she will make her own way into that realm and wage her own war... and maybe meet her hero once more.

Stolen Fury

And paused, as a memory of the torments she suffered at the hands of the demons bubbling to the surface. The fiends dancing around her; mocking, writhing, touching. Sarah shuddered. It had seemed random at the time, and she had been long gone by then, but now... for some reason she couldnt shake the feeling that there was something more to it. Thinking back it felt almost... ritualistic.

It would be so easy to write it off as random acts of debased desires and cruelty, but no, the more she thought about it the more she felt that there must have been some... purpose to their acts. She had been wall taught, she knew full well that it was a mistake to underestimate the intelligence and cunning of Demons. Perhaps her survival had not been as coincidental as it had seemed. The thought infuriated her, why had she been chosen to live and suffer? The twist to her lips grew into a big smile, and not a nice one; Whatever their purpose, it had clearly failed, and she would make them pay for that mistake one day.

Then she walked out. Out of her faith, out of the shrine, out of the monastery, out into the hills that surrounded it. Secure in her sense of purpose she headed towards Kenebras, the city of crusades, for she could think of no better place to begin her training anew. She revised her training, stripping out the philosophical and religions elements, boiling it down to raw physic training. She trained as hard as her body could take, and on the few occasions she had extra money, would train even beyond that and pay for healing after. She found work, there were surprisingly many opportunities for a girl with a comely face, strong arms and few scruples in Kenebras.

Nightmares have been her constant companion since that day, sometimes going away for weeks, just long enough to start to hope they might be gone for good only to return with a vengeance, often wracking her for several days in a row. As punishing her for daring to hope for freedom, and over the years, Sarah has long since accepted that she will never be rid of them, and instead seeks a purpose in them. Dreaming of being ravished by demons constantly as endured her to the memories, and each time she wakes up in a hot sweat, she reclaims alittle more of her lost time. One day she hopes to figure out what the purpose of the ritual was supposed to be, and perhaps find a clue leading to the being ultimately responsible for it.

In the meantime, she will settle for killing as many demons as she can.

Creed: A New Way

Years later, another event would come to shape her life almost as much as her experiences at the hands of demons. A chance encounter with a warrior woman named Valeri, who made other people's problems her business as a point of pride.

And Sarah was having problems. The young brawler had dedicated her life to her goals with a singlemindedness born from her trauma, and that coupled with the end of her faith effectively cut her off from the people around her, particularly those who might have lent her aid. wip

Mortalism

NG/CG/N/CN
HQ: Radahoum
Mortalism is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of mortal races, individually and collectively, as shapers of life on the Material Plane and what transpires upon it. Eschewing faith in higher beings, they instead choose to trust in the power and resolution of their own soul and the rewards of hard, honest labour. In general, they are moral and upright individuals who hold to a personal code of ethics, but often have attitudes ranging from cool to hostile towards deitific religions, believing that such represent little more than begging for handouts from beings that do not truly care about them or the world they live in beyond their desire to appear benign and infact choose to stand aside when they could make a difference in a attempt to soak up as much worship as possible.

Mortalist dogma holds that the many Gods and Goddesses of Golarion could make the world into a paradise if they so chose, but doing so would mean that mortal races would not need them any more. If the world is ever to be become such a place, then they believe it will be due to the efforts of mortal races to make it so. Exclusively. This is the goal they work towards, to ultimately free future generations from the predations of the dark things that stalk their world, and the strife perpetuated by religions. The closest thing Mortalists can be said to have as a 'allied faith' is the naturalistic Green Faith, as many share their respect for the natural world and feel that its a acceptable alternative to simply believing in ones self. The faith of Gorum, Sarenite zealots, and other groups that frequently engage in direct action instead of passive worship are more warmly considered than most, though this is more due to the character of the faithful than any tacit approval of their faith its self. On the flipside extremely passive deities get harsher scorn; few things tick a Mortalist off so much as a brilliant piece of craftsmanship or art, acts of charity, or amazing accomplishments being chalked up to divine inspiration or intervention. That it is often the creator or hero themselves making such attestations inspires only resigned pity that they do not realize that their accomplishments are theirs. This makes them one of the few groups, and perhaps the only non-evil one, that utterly loathes Shelyn, who they view as the ultimate do-nothing-god that simply enjoys worship and praise while shamelessly ripping off the talent and skill of mortal artists to bolster her church. They hold a similar scorn for evil men who blame their misdeeds on infernal influence after the fact.

Mortalists have no official documents, their creed and ways are most often communicated by word-of-mouth from practitioners to interested individuals. While a empty circle or humanoid-figure are sometimes used as symbols, such things are uncommon and many do not see the need for a identifying logo. While Mortalism is not based on or directly connected to the Laws of Man, the two ideologies are highly compatible and many Mortalists can be found quietly working in support of Rahadoum's anti-religion policies and in the Pure Legion. A similar concentration exists in Touvette of the River Kingdoms and Bachuan of Xian Tia, though they lament the excesses of these nations, Mortalists often feel that the seeds must be planted somewhere, and are willing to encourage it to grow, in the hope that generations born free of the yoke of organized faiths might one day rise up to to away with the tyranny that rules over them without returning to divine bootlicking... and are more than willing to help it along should the opportunity arise.

Personality
Sarah started off as a perpetually cheerful and moral child, but after suffering at the hands of demons and losing her home and family, she dedicated herself to their destruction and spent years living in near-poverty while she trained herself to the point of exhaustion and beyond, day in and day out. This hardened her, leaving her standoffish and anti-social, while her morals degraded as she was forced to do what she had to do to make ends meet in Kenebras. Had her life continued on its path, she may have ended up little different than the fiends she has dedicated herself to fighting.

Fortunately she was saved from that path by her new mentor, Valeri. The mortalist woman coaxed Sarah out of her shell and dragged her (literally at times) out to taverns and the like, forcing her to loosen up and socialize. In time this softened the surly young brawler's hard edges and allowed her to admit that she had been lonely before (if only to herself). Though the emotional scars remain, the current-day version of Sarah smiles often and is earnest, if awkward, in her attempts to connect with others and build relationships. She also engages in many activities such as running, bathing, and drinking for the simple fun of such activties, rather than scoffing at them as she might once have.

The reverse of this however is still very much in full effect, Sarah has very strong morals, but no ethics, and there is no such things as 'overkill' or 'excessive force' in her mind. While she gives all humanoid races a fair shake anyone who proves to be a enemy, will be dealt with.

Sexually, Sarah is Pansexual, there is little to nothing left in this world that could shock her and by the same token, would make for a impressive bedmate, her lack of experience (though she is not a virgin) is entirely out of proportion with her performance. However she does have issues with physical intimacy, they are mild after so many years, but startling her is ill advised.

Hrm. Vrock? vulture's head, flies, nasty temper, will Lightning Dance you to death if you give 'em the chance.
Glabrezu? Dog-face, four arms (two human, two crablike), animal body. I think they have wings and a tail too, but I can't remember.
Balor are more or less the classic Flaming Winged Thing with the sword-whip of flaming doom ala LotR... which I can't remember the specific name of.. not, however, known to have a particular stench of rotten eggs.

And that's the three that immediately come to mind. Of course, there are always the incubi..

Well, I think it's probably pretty handy to have things intriguingly non-specific - trauma does funny things to the memory - although, as Thorne suggests, Vrocks are pretty cool and iconic.

I guess I was also wondering 'what type of demon' in terms of 'what kind of abyssal purpose did they serve?' Having your nemesis be a Balor, a prince of the abyss, would be totally different from tracking down a demon of the despoliation of the natural world, and different again from living in fear of an advanced Vrock who at any time might challenge you to a dance-off while this plays in the background.

EDIT: Just updated my sheet a little - included the modifications to drop my RP expenditure a little, and a slight tweak to the background to make Stolen Fury  (stollen fury?) make more sense. Celestials don't mess about, basically, and in their own special way are also weird and terrifying.

If all goes according to plan, a +4 Holy Handgun (or Hand Grenade) won't even be close to the most powerful holy weapon in the Worldwound by the end.

Yes, I really am blind.
Being Literate is the ability to read and understand a language. When you ask for literate, what you are looking for is Verbosity, which is the ability to use lots of words without actually saying very much... like politicians. I consider myself both literate and verbose.

Okay, as seems usual, there was a lot of really stiff competition to get into this game, eveyone ended up being in some version of the group, and there are going to be more people disappointed than happy. Nature of PbPs I think. I liked everything I saw, but a couple of dynamics pushed me to go more exotic in one region, so I went a bit more traditional in others (I'll leave it to you guys to figure out which is which). I'm quite pleased with the final group, and empathetic to those who missed out.

Before I start repeating myself even more, here's the group:

M’iaq - Played by Loki
Piper - Played by Chulanowa
Roland - Played by Glyphstone
Arlais - Played by Thorne
