Hidden in the Smoke -Adventures in the Iron Kingdoms

The Order of the Crimson Fangs is a well-established mercenary company who’s been making changes under its newest leadership, looking to establish specialized squads outside of the normal war platoons.  Squads for use in specialized operations and request which they have been receiving more and more from the Cygnarian nobility as well as its industrial giants.  Headquartered in Steelwater Flats, with a small office in Point Bourne, the Order is able to mobilize and reach most areas quickly thanks to local rail or water ways.  You have been applied and been chosen to be part of one of these specialized squad meant to be able to investigate and deal with smaller issues and problems, both ones that are independent or that may be part of a larger campaign.
 
You have recruited as potential agents in the newly formed Black Wind Division, an experimental division within the mercenary company taking on jobs outside of it’s normal status quo.  Small, mobile units that can perform various series from investigations, retrieval and even sabotage as needed. More and more industry leaders and nobles are asking for small scale operations and help, enough to make it profitable for the Order to consider specialized units.  As the new recruits you will be expected to follow your initial orders but also to think on your feet when unexpected obstacles or information comes to the unit when in the field.  After all, nothing is ever easy in Immoren.
 


I’ll be implementing the standard D&D point built for the campaign of 27 points using the cost chart in the Players Handbook, and I assume the quick start rules if applicable.  I’ve listed the available Races, Humans in the first subsections broken down by countries, and Essences available in my world building thread.  You need to chose one race and one Essence and then one Background.  I’ve supplied what I can but if you want info on the various subcultures within a country for any reason, let me know and I can pm you the blurb on them.  I will consider Iron Kingdom Races outside of the main book but your background will really need to justify why they are in civilized lands and would be working for a mercenary company since most of the other books are races living on the fringes. 
 
I believe everything else is standard.  I borrowed the 5E character sheet from the one offered on the system forum, I think it has everything based on my review, but let me know if I’m missing something and I’ll update.  I’ve listed a Family Info section to list any living family you may have and any info you want to offer on them as I like to wrap up the characters into the RP with as many ties as I can, which means sometimes pulling in family and friends.  It’s purely optional but as a DM I like to put it out there just because of my DM style.
 
Picture avatars should be art, drawn or digital, but no AI art please.  This is a personal preference and a hard line for me.  Personality can simply be a few key words or a description as you prefer, nothing to worry over as I’m sure it will come out in RPing.  And the more Backstory you give me the more I can work with so at least a paragraph or two if you can manage.  Like I said, I love to extend ties that will make things more personal to characters and players.
 
I think that covers most things but I’m probably forgetting something so just let me know if you have any questions or clarifications needed.  And you can either just drop the character sheet here or PM me.  I’m leaning towards 5 or 6 players max and it will not be a first come, I’ll be reading over sheets and then approving so we have a good mix.

Yeah, I backed both the main Requiem Kickstarter and the Borderlands one, back when I was still big on using Kickstarter, but gave up after that and just have acquired individually the Nightmare Empire one.  I've not gotten my gaming group interested in it but I've played the 3.5 edition and even the stand alone one with other groups, DMing them.  So quite intrigued to try the 5E edition as do love the setting but have had to stick with my own world for my current groups D&D sessions.

Will have to do some digging and see if I have the right books.

It was initially designed as a 3.5 campaign setting in teh same competition that Keith Bakker won with Eberron. The guys who designed liked it so much, they started their own company, Privateer Press, and released it under the OGL. The 3.5 version was 1e. For 2e, they designed their own system using their Tabletop Wargame system as the base. It was a bit unbalanced, Warcasters/Warlocks were way overpowered. About four years ago they designed a 5e version. I kickstarted the base set, borderlands, and nightmare emprie.

I've run 2e IKRPG a few times, including as part of a Trollblum Scrum group, and played the wargame for mayn years up until 4e of the wargame when I left due to not having a playgroup anymore.

I'll be super excited to see what is done with this and have an opportunity to take a crack at it.

I'd be interested in this as well, though I don't know anything about the setting.  I've played regular 5E D&D pretty much weekly online for several years now though, so know how the system works, unless this setting has rules I might not know about.  I'm definitely interested to hear more details.

That would explain it then. I've had the 3.5 books at one point and read through a number of times. Though like all my books that I don't use they eventually were traded for other books. Rather interesting to see they went with 5e instead of the other options.

Ah, 5e is a juggernaut and the designer in charge of the project was a 5e fan. The setting also had its roots in D&D. Guess there was a sort of appropriateness to the choice. This was also a few years back before Wizards flirted with OGL 2. Oofdah.

I will say that the 5e port does do some weird things to the setting as it is not a perfect fit for the world lore in places.

I think it also uses a fairly unique 'background' like structure. Forget exactly. I'll fish out my PDFs is the interest breath life to game.

Yeah there's actually three different editions, 3.5, their own stand alone and then recently what they are calling their IK Requiem game which is using the 5E rules.  It is a fairly newer edition.

Nice.  Knowledge of the Iron Kingdoms isn't necessary, I'm going to make the needed info, like Racial Traits, available if/when I start recruiting.  And they have an extensive wiki people can use if they want to for more info on the races and cultures.

Their own system one was interesting, though I found the built in dual class a bit weird, and was kind of sad they never really got far with it, only produced like the core book and two or three supplements and an adventure, before the moved into the... I think it was called Unleashed with all the monster races and detailing the outlands and such, never picked them up.

Nice.  Yeah I always found the setting unique, not your standard steampunk, maybe because it's built off the Warmachine miniatures lore.

I'm interested enough to ask about the Requiem ruleset, I haven't heard of this before. Is it completely different rules or just add ons for what 5e has? Google is not helping or maybe I don't know where to look. And I'll admit I'm a sucker for good steampunk so I'm very willing to learn.

It's an add on.  They have their on racial options but beyond that it's like most others where it's just adding onto base 5e with more rules and options.  It's much like the old 3.5 edition.  They do have some optional rules like Essence but I'm probably going to avoid that for this to avoid confusing newbies to it since easier to just go with straight racial bonus.  Iron Kingdoms Requiem is what they decided to call the new 5e rulesets... still not sure why the Requiem, maybe I'm missing it in my reading. lol

Edit: Also adds in firearms!

Hah, you may be right, I guess I was expecting that action movie line drop where you are like they said the name of the movie!  They probably said in the Kickstarter write up too but I just saw Iron Kingdoms and bought in.  I thought it weird they needed an add on considering the last two books just were called Iron Kingdoms.  guess to differentiate it.

That's my guess as well as the 5e version was set post-apocalypse, basically. Lore-wise.

I would be interested in giving this a shot. I have played the war miniatures game since Mk I and into Mark II. I have been in  two  short lived games of the original rpg for Iron kingdoms. I have purchased the Campaign setting book for  Iron Kingdoms Requiem  and I am currently reading through lore.

The Gun Mage is Requiems theme fitting version of the standard warlock it seems but... it seems like the massive bullet focus lost all the utility a warlock could have? I'll admit I've not really looked through the other classes yet but is the focus on pure combat standard to the Iron Kingdom stuff?

Gun Mage should not be a warlock substitute. It should be its own unique class. They use magic to inscribe rune ammunition that they fire using magictech guns.

Making deal with outside forces is a biiiiig nono in the setting. Super big. Like, auto-villain levels of big.

It's all good. Brainstorming is part of the fun. And Kakihara said he wanted to make it newbie friendly. Happy to shoot PMs back and forth or chat on Discord. Hit me up. Some ideas will be moderately lore dependent. Depending on what timeline the GM will be using.

Gun mage has very similar mechanics to warlock even if the fluff is different. But for the mechanical similarities they stripped out anything approaching utility or noncombatant 

Unless rune tools are that big a deal?

Nooope.

Haha. It's a military class. I haven't looked too closely at it or what skills and non-mage abilities it gets. But the rune shots are all combat oriented and they don't get any other magic. In their lore, they tend to be scouts and spies and agent types.

Because cosmology in the Iron Kingdoms is different than your default D&D one.  As their book puts it, Warlocks in the D&D sense do exist among the infernal cultist but are not called warlocks.  The term warlock in IK are spellcasters who can establish telepathic bonds with savage warbeast that they can control.  They have no rules for them but have said they will be coming in future books, not sure if they have them in the Cyrx book as have not had a good look at it but pretty sure it's not in the Borderlands books.  With them being tied to infernal cults, basically the people hoping to burn the world down, they wouldn't really have a place in the campaign.  (I need to put up a little lore in my worldbuilding thread on the cosmology/religion need to remember.)

And I don't think gun mages are as comparable to warlocks as they are to maybe a mix of sorcerer and artificer I feel.  I've loved them since 3.5 edition but then the idea of having magic guns has always struck me as neat.

Animal bond warlocks are in the borderland book with... shaman n bone grinder I think.


And aye magic guns is a very interesting concept.

While I know it's a bit too early to discern character creation stuff yet, are we using the essence and background system from the book? I admit I like them a lot more than racial stats as it feels they add a lot of leeway to character creation.

Debating on this.  I was going to leave the Essence stuff go because I wanted to make things easy for people without the books but I didn't want to ax the background system... but just rereading it realizing they kind of expect them to go together so I need to reconsider if I want to ax the racial bonuses now and just go with Essence as I do really want to include the backgrounds.

I'd say keep essences. It make the campaign world feel more unique and it's not overly burdensome to learn.

The Essences  only remove the racial stat bonuses. Everything else remains the same about  races and backgrounds. So go for it if it is something you would like to add.

What is on or off the table with this?
Are various nationalities simply no go if the unit is "mostly" cygnar (ie Menoth Khador)?
Since magic is relatively rare in setting (having not played it in decades) being mostly limited to the warcasters, how does that work out in the RPG?

Since warcasters and jack's are off the table does that limit the usefulness of Bodgers or Mekaniks? (Had the old 1st ed book)

It also partly a me thing where we all turn up with guns and then I go, what makes my character unique?

Guns do not make you unique in IKRPG. They are a ubiquitous part of the setting. That's a shift in paradigm you'll need to make. Mechanics are used for a lot more than just warjacks. There's trains, generators, and various other machines in the world.

A good base point to consider is that mechanics and guns are not extraordinary in this setting. They are the base point.

But so is magic. And, in lore, arcanists and sorcerers and druids and shamans and priests exist as magic users. In lore, you just need the spark of magic to use magic, but there are many many paths to take. Gifted essence individuals might be rare, but there are still thousands of them in the world. Tens of thousands probably.

As for team composition... no idea. We're a mercenary team. So, that opens things a bit. Especially if we are post Tithe. I forget the anme of the apocalypse event that occured in lore.

If you use Essences, you also get a stat bonus from your background since the two are meant to work together. If you don't use essences you just use racial traits instead.

Maybe I'll just go Winter guard (so that's probably ranger of fighter)

Part of me wants to play a Paladin of menoth, but I don't mechanic characters that well.

Or a mechanic but that probably is affected by the above as well

Pretty sure that a Paladin of Menoth... if you mean Paladin of the Oath of the Wall... is a subclass of the Paladin class in the Requiem book.

As for anything else, RP first and mechanics second.

Hi I'm still eyeing Khador.

And thinking either winter guard survivalist type and/or engineering type.

So how would engineering work would it be Smith's tools or something else. Is it a class? I'm curious. I'm more interested in fixing stuff in the environment than using engineering as a weapon.

The winter guard type is easy enough. It's probably either fighter or ranger.

The winter guard type is easy enough. It's probably either fighter or ranger.
There's a mechanik class in Requiem. Unique to IKRPG. This gives you the ability to tinker and a few other fun things. Think of it as a Artificer with now magic and more mechanical tricks. There's definitely mechanics in the winter guard. It is the general "army" for Khador after all and encompasses more than just frontline grunts, heavy weapons teams, etc. But if you wanted to add a bit of that trained soldier flare, try the soldier background or a level of gunfighter. Another class unique to IKRPG. I am sure that if you asked Kakihara or me, we could give you the mechanics of a level 1 mechanik.

As for my concept, something Cryxian is my aim. Not sure if I want to do gifted or strictly military. Either a scharde islander or a Satyxis if I can persuade GM-sama. Haha. And Come up with a good enough story.

Awww... Was that because someone else mentioned them or they just went for a party somewhere and didn't invite you?

I'm feeling very uncertain personally.

I hear from a review that combat mechanic, the closest to my engineer type idea, benefits from having a warjack around, but since there are no warjacks available. (Warcaster banned) not sure how useful it is independently.

Someone else mentioned they wanted arcane mechanic so I'm ok to let them have that. And Ironhead I just don't want to do.

We already have one gunslinger on the cards. (I thought it was you Shengami when you mentioned Satyxis).

Maybe I just work out the character first and worry about mechanical stuff afterwards.

Undecided on character type. Maybe a paladin of Morrow or maaaaybe Menoth if I can squeak a justification for that in. or just a soldier (IE: Fighter) type with no real religious affiliation. human most likely.

What's normally the case for Essences is that they work in place of a races +'s to stats in part, and the other half of the stat bonus you'd normally get comes from iron kingdoms backgrounds which give you a +1 to another stat . IE: picking the Mighty essence for +2 to strength, and then picking the Iron Fang background for your character would give you +1 to str or con. I am unsure if we're going with that or not but I assume that would be the case.

submission sheet has a spot for Essence and I'm pretty sure the GM decided on using them just can't seem to scroll far enough back during a reply. :D


Essence is a neat concept and nicely lets you be less hindered by race choice.

@Hexed Functionally agree, however you can still be hindered by race choice. Just in other directions. Eg. My concept and background are saddled with having to take an essence that increases int. And my background choice clashes with my race choice and my potential class choice (overlapping proficiencies) even though they are thematically compatible and exactly what I wanted.

My overall feeling now that I've actually seen a (pdf) copy of the book is I still love the Iron Kingdoms but the book needed a lot of tlc before release.

My bad, I had removed all the racial bonus from the other races when I decided to go with Essence but messed up on that.  The only stat bonus should be coming from Essence and Backgrounds.  I'll fixe that up on the worldbuilding.

Nope, if you look in that same section I have listed Essences and their bonuses so you should be able to use them.

Edit:  Though if you can get your hands on the book, the Backgrounds in there do give you a little more extra than the standard D&D ones so up to you on that.

That's what I meant, for background reasons if I needed the Iron Kingdoms book, but if I can manage with normal 5e backgrounds then I'm fine. In fact, "Gifted" Essence might work better with a Sorcereress I have *repeatedly* tried to use in games but the games all keep dying :P

They ignore that mechanically, but kind of suggest that you don't. Humans are just humans, they're broken up by nationality. Etc. Build the character, then worry about mechanics.

@Marie Reynolds  Jaspar, MC, grew up in the Ogunholt Forest the son of a charcoal maker killed in war. Not sure if it was a major conflict or a local dispute as not sure what the date ICly is. Welcome to have someone tag along with him, but in his current iteration, he joined the MOrrowan church and served there for years. That could change though if you wanted to pair up.

@Revelation I also recall you making some mention of being frenemies. A Menite makes a great frenemy for a Morrowan...

Rashol the only d6 on the chart of classes  that has a d6 is the Alchemist. Mechanik is a d8.

@shengami I appreciate that. At the same time I hate feeling like I *have* to take Handle Animal and Intimidate as my race proficiencies because I get Athletics and Survival as my background proficiencies.

Personally, I wanted to go Mighty essence, but felt that I would be spending so much time making my character competent during the level ups where everyone else would be starting as competent.

I would be willfully building an underpowered character. If I go character first, and kind of a one note thing. But they wouldn't even sing that note particularly well.

Which actually is kind of funny as Gifted is 'needed' for magic but the stat bonus doesn't do Cha which sorcerers as the 'first' casters use. :D

Looks like Kakhiara is allowing Gifted to give +2 charisma though which is nice.

There are some discrepencies out there. The preview version of the PDF from the kickstarter had some errors in it. Make sure you have the final version. Haha.

As Marie said, it was a kickstarter and there were preview version of the document released to to backers. There was also a final version that had errors then a final final version corrected.

Sad to say, but around the time of the third Requiem kickstarted, when the stuff from the first was being released, was when the company started to sort of back off supporting the TTRPG... again... in favor of their wargames. Also the lead developer for te TTRPG left the company around that time as well. Soooo...

It's a problem child. Heh.

  Jaspar is a believer. Through and through, he is a Morrowan. Specifically, Jaspar walks the path of Ascendant Markus. He is open, honest to a fault, and courageous. He doesn't doubt his path for a single moment. He begrudges no others their paths, but he walks his steadfastly until such time that Morrow calls him home.

Backstory
  Jaspar grew up in an Ordic village in the Ogunholt. His father and brothers were charcoal makers. If nothing had happened, Jaspar would have followed, but fate stepped in. His father and two older brothers were conscripted by the local baron and went to war. Jaspar was too young by a year. Within a few months, they received the first notice. Then the second days later. His eldest brother and father had been killed. Weeping, Jaspar fled to the local shrine and fell to his knees t pray to Ascendant Markus and Morrow to preserve his last brother. He promised his service for life should his wish be granted.
  The next week, his brother returned home- wounded but whole. The story he told was of a miracle. Of being buried under enemy bodies and nearly left for dead. Of how a glinting light off a buckle had brought an ally close. That he'd heard his brother's cries and saved him. Injured, he'd been sent home. Jaspar knew his prayer had been answered and, as soon as he came of age, he joined the church's military branch, to serve both Morrow and Markus.
  He served the church for a time but saw how the warriors of others factions suffered without Morrow's guidance. It just so happened that the soldiers he saw that day were mercenaries of the Crimson Fangs. He made his offer to journey with them for a time and it was accepted. His is still Morrowan and a servant of the church, but he sees the good he does here and takes comfort in it.

Clancy: While going home to visit shortly after joining the Order, Jaspar looked in on his sister and found her in a semi-serious relationship with Clancy and doing well due to Clancy's presence in her life. I would like some Advice on this, I am thinking of having a Local mundane Artisan's/Alchemists guild that was founded in  Midfast. Its claim to fame was those who crafted armor both from metal and Leather. Also the Guild had strong foundation of Alchemists that excelled as healers. Would such a thing be possible or would something like that be not possible because Government sponsored Alchemists and other such Alchemist organizations would stop something like that from happening? I am trying to get an idea of if something like this could be possible to  have had my characters parents be Members of such a guild and my character joined the guild and followed in her Parents foot steps.

Humm, a guild? That seems unlikely. A local shop? Sure.

So, in the world, alchemy isn't a government regulated thing. Alchemy is a private business thing. And the biggest name in the game if the Golden Crucible. A guild of alchemists that goes back to the rebellion. They hold the secret formula for blackpowder. Or something like that. There's a few, smaller, rivals but they are the premier alchemists.

But a local shop that did alchemical/atrisan work would be unproblematic. Known for armor and chemically treater armors is fine. There's big demand for that in the world. In Cygnar, expecially, I think they'd be fine. Cygnar is a lot less hands on than Khador with private enterprises and techniques. Haha. No Greylords coming to steal your secrets... openly.

Again, calling it a guild, though, might get weird, but a shop? Fine. Especially if the parents were ex-adventurers or ex-soldiers or used to work for the government then went freelance. Cygnar is the plce for that. Well, it is after the fall of Vinter Raelthorne's tyranny.

Thanks for the input Shengami, I might need to look at a different background then labor boss. If I go with the local shop Idea. The only reason I thought about a guild was to Justify a Labor boss that is an Artisan and Alchemist.

Wait that just gave me an idea. A local shop that grew big enough  to  have two more stores and become a local merchant enterprise with a total of three stores. The first  Shop that started it all will be in  Midfast then then second and third in Berck and Five Fingers. This would also justify some of the traveling she has done cause her work made her travel between the three locations in Ord. This can also set my plans for having earned the attention of Casimir  the Master at arms and Requistion Officer and  Isidora The Liason officer of the Crimson fangs.

Yep that could work I have not set up the extent of the family. So I can always add more to make that happen. The Mercaraian League contact could happen for the family when the open the Store in Berck since the league started to make some  headway in getting a presence their but I don't see  big Contracts getting landed from the Mercaraian league for this family business. This is also to represent her family life  in Ord before she got recruited by the Order of the Crimson Fang.

If I recall my ethnicities rightly, MC is Thurian. I think. Maye not, I'd need to check again. Thurians are in that area but not sure my blonde-haired/blue-eyed boy matches right. Haha.

One of the things I like about IKRPG is that the humans are much less boring as a racial option.

And the mercarian League didn't become the powerhouse t is by NOT keeping an eye out for small up-and-coming businesses. I mena, YC ended up a mercenary for SOME reason, yeah? I mean, outside it being a MAJOR industry in Ord.

I went Thurian Descent. Mostly because Thurian's have the widest range of hair and skin color. The Thurian accept pretty much everyone when they were a Kingdom.  They even have had interactions with a Human nationality was known for  Red hair and green eyes.

Though If you don't see anything about  them in my sheet I will be holding off adding and finalizing any PC connections if  my character is chosen just to save people form having to  rewrite sheets should one of us gets accepted and the other does not.

Oh, the sister connection. That is quite tempting. That was an interesting dangling bit I put in there for uses... haha. Alright, should the game progress and character get picked, we might pick up that connection.

Misha grew up with the cold in her bones. Everyone had to make do. Everyone.

Her dad and her mom worked the smelters. Every day they came home with aches in their bones and coughs in their lungs. But he would still sit down with her and throw down a pile of broken gears and springs, and say “come on, make us something.” She simply pinged gears across the tabletop. Her dad would smile sadly at her, and put them down on her brother's table. “More for you.”

Her brother's movements made her eyes sparkle as the pile of junk became chessmen, or little mechanical rabbits. Her brother could just.. see things..

It was a great day when the school found him, his skills were needed. His gifts could be nurtured. Misha's father seemed more distant when Osric left.

She tried,but her hands didn't dance like her brothers, she was happier when she could swing a sledge at a boiler plate and pound it into different shape, replace a wheel or a bearing in some giant workshop engine or vehicle.

When she went before the assessors, they shook their heads, and she was assigned to the winter guard.

In the guard, she was cycled into the horrific invasion of Lhael, something that soured her taste for war. She worked wherever she was sent, her capacity for heavy loads was noted, and frequently she would be servicing the field guns, the mighty steam armour of the Men o’War or the Iron Fangs. Once she had to run raw materials to a great warjack as well. 

She learned on the job, the desperate moments of seized gears or jammed tracks to be liberated, frequently by force and swearing.

There were also confused moments of combat, and many times she could only give thanks to the wilds that she was still alive. Each clash meant more deaths. Each sunrise meant more new faces. Then came the worst. She was there at Rimswater. When the artillery, her artillery and those cursed swords reduced the town to rubble.

While she regularly cursed her fate as a winter guard. She had never so despised it as much as that day. She couldn't celebrate a victory. Only ghosts dwelled in that town afterwards. Shortly after that, she was captured. She didn't resist the Cygnaran patrol very hard when it crashed into them. Just enough to say that she had resisted. A bullet had passed through one of her limbs and went to ground to staunch the flow, and the next thing she remembered was a rifle stock.

After that, she would have been quite content in her cell once they realised she had nothing of value to give them.

[Still WIP]

I could probably get everything I want from this by just going fighter and finding a way to get mechanics tools.

Wait that just gave me an idea. A local shop that grew big enough  to  have two more stores and become a local merchant enterprise with a total of three stores. The first  Shop that started it all will be in  Midfast then then second and third in Berck and Five Fingers. This would also justify some of the traveling she has done cause her work made her travel between the three locations in Ord. This can also set my plans for having earned the attention of Casimir  the Master at arms and Requistion Officer and  Isidora The Liason officer of the Crimson fangs.
She may definitely have caught the eye of Casimir since he deals with most of the outside vendors as well as the other armories'.  The idea behind the this mercinary group is they are broken up into military like structure.  So there are divisions that are just the warcasters and their warjacks and then you have an infantry division, a Calvary, each with their own commanding officer and internal structure and specialized armory and gear.  So Isidora is more dealing with both the internal units to coordinate as well as pull off units or gear from these other divisions as needed for this special division as well as deal with communicating with the outside entities once the high command has sent them a job.  So she may be less likely to have met others.  

And the merchant enterprise makes a lot of sense as there are other such merchant endeavors in the the world.

Well there are a number still working on their sheets and I rarely start a new group game during the week as work makes me too lazy after.  And it's not a first come first serve, I'm reviewing and deciding if characters will fit well.  So I think the earliest I would be moving on a final decision would be next weekend, though it could be a little longer depending on how long it takes for character creation for some.  But earliest would be next weekend.

  Can anyone suggest a background for a traveling gambler?  I'm not sure between guy or gal right now.  This is a gun mage and someone who keeps getting drawn into war, but they really just want to see the world, share kisses and cuddles with interesting young women, and play cards.  

  I've done someone like this in deadlands as a guy who preferred throwing knives to guns, so maybe this one should be a girl and focus on her magelock pistol.  

  Anyways, i'm having trouble finding a good background for her.

Well, the setting specific backgrounds are usually tied to organizations. Hmm... don't have my book with me but off the cuff? Try Laelese Veteran or Kayazy. Depending on what part of the world you are from. Otherwise, 5e basic backgrounds include the Charlatan, Entertainer, Outlaw?

I'll check my book. But I also recommend thinking about essence and origin first. This setting differentiates characters pretty starkly based on where they are from. Like, there's no 'common' language in the setting. If human, you generally know the language of where you were born and one more. These define the character more.

I do hope most people are making sure to know the Cygnaran language.

EDIT: had a look.
Kayazy are a Khadoran organized crime syndicate that have fingers in Lael and Ord as well.
Mercenary could be a generic background for you if your a gun for hire.
Privateer... pirates... depends on where YC originates.
Spy? What were you doing before wandering around?
Vagabond is a general wandering background
Resistance Veteran if you were from Lael or that area.

There's also the consideration of where you learned gun magic. There's three recognized traditions (Tempest, Thorn, and Witch) as well as the Loner path. Who taught you? Did you figure it out yourself? It is more like wizardry than sorcery after all. There's runes to learn and master, technical skills to carve runes into bullets, etc.

  Thanks Shengami.  

   I'll give it some more thought. I'm seeing seeing Mercenary and Vagabond.  Could also do something based off of the "Claiming" veteran concepts.  (Was that what they called that war?)  I was basically thinking she was a Cingaran girl, but from the countryside rather than one of the big cities.  

The Requim backgrounds give a lot more than the core book backgrounds--including abiltiy scores!  

Not sure about who taught her, again, workign on that.  MAybe a relative, or maybe she picked it up in a company of soldiers/mercinaries she foguht alongside during the Claiming.

OK, first. Though kakihara has not, to my knowledge confirmed this, his descriptions of the nations ahve LEto Raelthorne as the king of Cygnar. That would place the game pre-claiming and probably during the Laelese War. If that is not the case, then Leto is not the king anymore... heh.

IKRPG does stats differently. You do NOT take your stat bonuses from your race. Kakihara is using the alternate, but preferred PP method, of deriving your stats from Essence and Background. Thus, where you are from and how you learned to navigate the world informs who you are more than what race you are. Heh. Thus why I recommend thinking abour 'origin' rather than race and putting serious thought into Essence. Essence defines how YC solves problems and interacts with the world. Then consider where they are from. This is important in the Iron kingdoms. You do still get all traits from your rae though, just not stats.

As to leanring Gun Magic, the notion of gun mages is wide spread enough for the idea to exist and a talented young gunslinger/gifted person to sort of figure it out. A famous case of this is Jarl SKuld, a trollkin gunmage. Thus there is the Gunmage subglass of the Lone Gunman which represent them figuring stuff out their own way rather than being trained. Still, there might have been a spark. A grizzled veteran, seeing a gunmage work, etc.

Personality
Playful, gregarious, and flirtations'.  Haley is not strictly a lesbian, but definitely has no desire to be tied down to a home life.  And nothing will tie her down at home faster than getting pregnant.  Fortunately--given her lusty disposition--she's quite happy enjoying the affections of the local girls while traveling the world, living by her wits, her magelock, and her luck.

Backstory
Hailey Kinnet grew up grew up in a country town on the trade road a few days from a Cignaran city.  They called it Winespring Town on account of a fresh spring bringing sweet water down from a nearby hill. 
  Her father was the innkeeper.  Her kept a poker room at the inn which Hailey really considered the most interesting place in the world--between the game itself and the people it brought from all over the wold. 
  There were lots of other interesting places there too, especially the reading room.  Her dad kept lots of books around, even when he had to trade out old ones.  He was especially interested in history books--including military texts that were actually getting taught at the universities.  Hailey just thought they were fun reading. 
  Hailey's mother was a schoolteacher for the town. 
  As Hailey started to mature, she developed a lusty and whimsical temperament.  Fortunately, she had just as much fun--and romance--playing with the barmaids as she did courted by the rich young men who came through the hotel. 
  The started to realize that way to get to her was the cards.  They played her for kisses, and eventually blow jobs, but with one of her friends getting pregnant Hailey decided nothing was worth gambling her virginity.  Not 'til she was ready to settle down. 
  And that might be never. 
  Her mother had a different read on how to take care of her and was trying to get her married to a rich local boy. 
  The two had a very noisy argument.  Hailey was ready to just leave, but they actually made up in the end.  Things had changed, though.  It wasn't that Hailey didn't feel welcome here, she just understood that this little town was too small for her now.   Her pregnant friend gave her the dagger they'd practiced with together.  Her father gave her the revolver he'd daughter her to protect herself with.  She took to the road and began to travel, working her way from place to place as a gambler. 
  Sometimes she had to protect herself with pistol or dagger.  Sometimes she used little wagers or did odd jobs to keep her going, or even used light fingers to filch something.  She told inspiring stories from the history books she'd read. 
  One winter when Hailey was cold and hungry, she came to a rough man's camp and offered to cook and do dishes in return for sharing his fire and his meal. 
  He agreed, but of course he wanted more and started to fondle her.  Hailey moaned but she was determined not to let her journey end.  He had her breasts bare before she managed to concinve him to play cards, 3 gold coins if she won, a blow job if he won. 
  He won, and Hailey paid her foriet.  He hadn't washed.  It was disgusting but she was drunk on the musk... 
  He wasn't satisfied, though, and he threw her down to take more.  Hailey desperately pulled her pistol and fired.  A flare of flame engulphed the injure man and he fled, burning!
  She looked at her revolver, confuse, there was a burning rune on the red-hot barrel.
Iria was an olive green girl with a red witch hat and high heeled sandals.  She wore a red bikini too and used a revolver and a rifle in battle.  Traveling together for many months, they became friends and then lovers.  Iria taught Haley everything she needed to know to become a gun mage--how to make and repair guns, craft runes, and tap into the magic Haley felt spark inside of her every time she gighted down the barrel of a gun, won a hand of cards, or kissed a girl. 
  Iria was alos part of a mercinary band called The Order Of the Crimson Fangs.  She didn't mention it at first because she was under cover busting up a ring of sweat shops.  The traveled together to Five Fingers were Hailey entered a poker tournament and iria acted as her gaurd.  While Hailey competed in the poker tournemnt Iria invested the sweat shop and called in some friends, thent he two of them joined the mission together to bust up the sweat shop, and they took the refugees home together.  It was during this time that Iria observed Hailey organizing the young refugees into a fighting force to protect themselves.  She used tactics that she had only read about in her history books but--with the hlep of drills--seemed able to execute properly.  She inspired the refugrees with stories of their historical heroes and thier battle cries.  By the time she got the refugees home, they were marching and using bhe battle cries of one of their historical units. 
  Iria took Hailey to the Crimson Fangs and introduced the young gun mage to their officers.

I'm sure I can tinker with that formatting for hours.  I'll mess with it as part of future drafts.  More importantly in future drafts I'll know more about the setting and be able to do a better backstory.  I've got some stuff in the works already.

Okay Here is Clancy Doyle and I made the Change from Labor Boss to Trader. It fit more for what I wanted for Clancy and made more sense for traveling around. Okay A quick edit, I added something to Clancy's personality.
Changed Alignment from Neutral to Neutral Good.

Personality
  Clancy finds that in work or play a song can always make it better.  She  also managed to find a balance between being fun loving and adventurous, while still having a strong work ethic. Many have said about her she works hard and plays hard. Money  and time spent on the  health and happiness of  family is never a waste.  A work life balance is very important to me, I work to make a living I don't work to make a life. I take great delight in completing a transaction.

Backstory
  Clancy growing up only had her mother and 4 god parents.  Evilin would come and visit as much as her work would allow  to  Midfast as her daughter grew up in her home country looked after by her 4 closest friends before the retired from their lives a Mercenaries. They made sure Clancy  got education and taught her a variety of skills. Alda taught  Clancy about Alchemy and Medicine, Padri taught her the  intricacies of being a trader, Emma taught her how to cook and Milish taught her how to sail a steam boat. All four also taught her how to fight.  When Clancy reached adult hood, Millish propose the idea of a Joint venture Between the  three different business, Milish would provide a ship and crew that would take Milish traveling around Ord and possibly to  Cygnar. Milish spent much of her time traveling selling her God parent's ware's or making delivers to and from the three business of her god parents. She would also attend festivals and have booth selling wares and opening food stalls to drive  up awareness of the businesses of Alda& Padris armorer/Alchemy and Medicine business, Emma's restaurant and Milish's shipping business by taking orders  and  with the crew  and ship she worked with from Milish business they would see the deliveries handled. In part of Clancy's work and more of Alda and Padri's family looking for work and  eventually Alda's and Padri's own children reaching adult hood Alda and Padri's business would grow and open a location in Five fingers and Berck. All the while Casimir was working on his deal that would change Clancy's life in a way she never  expected ever since he had done some business with Alda& Padri Milish and even Emma when his work would take him to Midfast and eat regulary at Emma's establishment.

Mother: Evlin Doyle. A Student of the Corvis University  that is an Explorer in the  employ of Corvis University. Evlin is  Ord by birth  though moved to Cygnar to study at Corvis University and later start a career as a one of the University's backed explorers.

Clancy's God Parents/ Friends to Evlin Doyle:
All of the following people  have been long time friends of Evlin Doyle.  The four of them have also helped mentor and look after  Clancy when Evlin sent Clancy to live with them to studay and learn as she found her  own path to walk in life.  Also the  four friends had invested in each other business and supported each other as they go their respective business off the ground.

Alda Silva(Todorian descent): Before retiring she was a member of a small  mercenary outfit that used to be in the  employ of Corvis university that would accompany its explorers.  A citizen of Ord before finding work in Cygnar and when retired  returned to Ord with others from her unit to start a business in Ord. Wife to Padri. Alda is an Alchemist.  Alda works alongside her husband where the run armor smith and Alchemist store. Alda is also a skilled Leatherworker and handles the shops leather working needs as well as alchemical needs.  Alda main call to fame as a  Alchemist was reinforced with her knowledge of Medicine.  If Alda is not  working on a commissions for the shop her and her husband own she is out making house calls to patients which is another part of the business. Alda is  the one that taught  Clancy  Alchemy  and Medicine. Alda and Padri's first store was in Midfast and then as their family grew they opened  two more stores, one in Berck and the other in Five fingers.

Padri Silva(Todorian descent): Before retiring He was a member of a small  mercenary outfit that used to be in the  employ of Corvis university that would accompany its explorers.  A citizen of Ord before finding work in Cygnar and when retired  returned to Ord with others from his unit to start a business in Ord.  Husband to Alda. Padri is a skilled smith with a focus as an Armorer.  He will craft or repair weapons on a commission basis but his armor is his most common work he does and his call to fame. Padri  time as a mercenary was as a combat mechanic. He had quite the knack for disabling traps.
Alda and Padri's first store was in Midfast and then as their family grew they opened  two more stores, one in Berck and the other in Five fingers. Padri also came from a family of traders and Padri often filled the role of Quartermaster as well for missions with the University of Corvis. Padri passed  this skills on to Clancy.

Emma Applewhite:  A  Cygnarian gun mage that lived a live with one foot in the shadows. She worked for the same company as Alda, Padri and Milish. She was the one that could always find information on if any others were be seeking the same ruin or artifact their Corvis employers had set there sights on and had also a firm grasp of  the knowledge of the arcane. Despite all of this though Emma had a knack and love for cooking. When she retired she opened a restaurant in Midfast. Emma is also  Milish's Significant other.
Emma was the one who taught  Clancy how to cook. When Clancy had no other responsibilities to tackle For Alda or Milish and had no social plans she would find herself helping in Emma's kitchen if she needed the help.

Milish Carrock:  Another gun mage that had become a mercenary after doing  a tour of service with the Maritime order of the Trident. She joined the same Mercenary outfit that Alda, Padri and Emma were apart of.  Just like the others Milish worked on the contract with Corvis University. Milish had a knack for Travel especially by sea. After Milish retired to Midfast she opened a shipping company. Most of her regular business came from Alda,Padri and Emma for supplies they needed for their business but she had other local promising clients as well. Milish is Emma's Significant other. Milish taught  Clancy how to  sail a ship. Milish  proposed a Joint venture Between the  three different business, Milish would provide a ship and crew that would take Milish traveling around Ord and possibly to  Cygnar

Important Connections(To  tie her into the plot hook for the game):

Casimir:  Now  Master at arms of the Order of the Crimson Fangs, had his start as a Logistics officer with the Order. Thanks to his business dealings with  Alda, Padri, Emma and Milish he learned of a rising star  that was a  God child Clancy Doyle of the 4 former Mercenaries and apprenticed under the each of them.  Thanks to these apprenticeships Clancy  has a Talent for Alchemy, Medicine, Cooking and Trading. This drew his attention to Clancy cause he saw her having potential to be apart of on of the small specialized squads that  could benefit from her skills and serve as the Squads Quartermaster and also have her serve as a Liaison  to her Godparents business to form standing business deals with the Order. Casimir new he would have to present his plans to not only to his Commander but to Clancy and her 4 God parents to make the deal worth it  Clancy and Godparents  respectively. That is his plan that he is waiting for the right time to bring the Idea to his Commander and all Involved parties.

Character ties that will go into effect Should Clancy be accepted into the game:
Meeting Iria and then  Haley. These Events Happened before Meeting Loriana:
While Clancy was working the rivers a fun loving, free roving, journeyman gunsmith and gun mage named Iria started getting from place to place by taking security gigs on her river boat.

Iria was really cheerful and affectionate.  She even enjoyed trading arm restraining techniques with Clancy when they weren't on duty.

A few months into their association, Iria showed up on the ship with her new apprentice, Haley.  Haley was a young blonde human.  She was a little frazzled.  The barrel of her revolver was slightly slagged by the awakening of her gun mage magic.  The three of them became friends over several more months.  Hailey had a sharp mind.  She was cheerful and insightful.  She  loved to travel and liked to hear about places Clancy had been.  she loved little details about the cultures there. Haley and Clancy had down some light flirting, kissing and playing strip poker together on occasion on there journey together.

Meeting Loriana and eventually Jaspar:
Clancy became a regular customer at the Inn Loriana worked at as Clancy's  work has regularly  brought her to Five fingers quite a bit and  by happenstance on her first  visits to the Establishment Loriana and Loriana was working while starting to feel under the weather and since the Establishment was an Inn and she was staying while taking a meal. She offered to have Loriana come by her room to take a look at her and help with the signs of Loriana getting sick. Nothing to serious Clancy just helped her stave of the cold she had developed from going full blown issue.  Then they started to become friends she learned that Loriana tried a few different apprenticeships that failed, One left Loriana financially  on the hook for the cost of some initial tools and supplies to learn a trade. Clancy having learned about this provided her some extra money opportunities in between her work at the Inn to help pay off those debts and to help broaden  her skills while working at the Inn    She took Loriana on as a student in cooking. Teaching Loriana whatever she could when she had time between her own work. Loriana and Clancy grew closer than friends but developed a more open kind of relationship, That is polyamourous in nature due to in part of Clancy always being on the move with  her job. The foundation of this relationship is more centered on emotional intimacy with it sparingly becoming physical intimate. Jaspar on his travel's decides to  check in on his sister and at he Inn she is working at he is told she is in one of the customers room and what he finds  is Loriana  learning how to cook. Clancy invites Jaspar to stay for the lesson to be the taste tester of Loriana's lessons for the day. Jaspar stays for a while to learn how well Loriana was being taken care of by Clancy and he learns they are in a relationship as well.

More Iria and Haley  Connection Information. This Occurred after meeting Loriana:
After their third shared visit to Five Fingers, Haley and Iria didn't show up again for a few months.  Clancy heard there'd been a really daring hit against a sweat shot who's patrons made their hard to touch.  Clancy hoped her friends were okay and wasn't sure she'd see them again, even if they were, but ran into them again three months later, far from their usual stomping grounds trying to get closer to home so they could report to Iria's masters in a certain mercenary company...

Good plan. Pinterest isn't working. There's not so many for this game. but for another game I tried another search. I could identify the definitely ai, but discarding the potentially ai was a lot lot harder. And I'm not good enough to draw them myself.

Do got a question though. Rhulfolk traits are fairly incomplete compared to the other races and it mentions they're a subrace so does that mean they get all the dwarf goodies and the Rhulfolk stuff?

Looking at Steampunk and Diesel punk art is not bad for this setting.  I would not worry about looking for Winterguard images. I doubt your character would still where the uniform. That is what I did searches for.

I'll look into this after work Hexed when I can access all my books and material.  I did notice just with a quick glance that yeah, they don't list like age and some other things like they do on the two elf races so it's kind of strange.  I'll confirm what I have and let you know either here or via PM.

Ok, after further looking over the stuff, I guess that the designers got lazy on the Dwarf race and did them as a subrace for some reason.  And for some reason IK 5E has no errata, which honestly seems a bit weird even if they play tested in the kickstarter.  But based on the main book wording, minus the ability score increases, since they come from your Essence, you would get all the main Dwarf bonus from the Players Handbook along with the Rhulic Dwarf stuff tacked on.

Up to you, totally understand being busy, but I think we only have two finalized and one WIP that was posted so you have time if you want.  I know at least one interested party that still hasn't finalized stuff on their idea so you should have time if you want to submit.

I got my character sheet to update.  I think i got the proficieicies right this time.  I updated the history extensively including a mentor tho tuaught me formal gun mage skills but also an event where i started picking them up spontainiously

somehow five attempts to copy/paste had parts of the stat score section vanish and everything from there down either underlined or strikethroughed even though the option wasn't highlighted and clicking that option didn't get rid of it.

I am not sure if we are going to get any more submissions, I know lost at least one potential who just can't make it.  So I'm looking at finalizing character approvals and setting up threads this week, depending how busy it is. 

Edit:  Well was hoping to at least get one more submission to even things out but it appears interest bottomed out on the idea so I think I'm just going to close it at this point and regroup on things.  Consider making it for a small, limited group in the future.
