I know that we have it on E, but how does it work? I'm curious to know.

If the staff determines (through their mysterious ways) that someone is underage, then that person receives an Underage tag.  They can only see the first column of forums, just like an unapproved member.

though what about sign-up? they would need to have their age put as over 18 before they could get the underage status then, right?

I'm not sure I understand your question?

People lie about their age. Staff has ways to check for it. If we suspect an applicant of being underage, they are marked as such.
