"War is progress, peace is stagnation" G.W.F. Hegel

Times change, battlefields don't. It's said that while war is a constant, the tools a soldier brings to the battlefield can only improve. The sword gave way to the gun, and metal armor gave way to the kevlar. As technology improved, so did the soldier, and now battles are fought with man and machine in perfect unison.

Cybernetics. A concept that originally began as small machines to improve the quality of life of humanity as a whole. It didn't take long for humanity to start tinkering with the human body as a whole instead of in parts, and then came the full body augments. Men and women well into their twilight years could now rejoin society with bodies in their prime. The disabled could now function with the same ability as those born with bodies of full function. It didn't take long for the world's militaries to take the technology for war and "improve" on it. Ballistic polymer plating, high capacity electro-pneumatic servos, increased processing power... the limits were a farce with military funding.

To the public, full body cyberization was marketed as a way of improving a soldier's longevity in the battlefield. It didn't stop the general public from despising them as "bastardizations" of evolution. Your average soldier would return home to a volley of hate, and many would find their new body's upkeep to be well beyond their pension. Some would turn to crime, others would return to service. But there are others who would find another life.

Private contracting and security never stopped being a lucritive service, and actually increased in value with cyberization. Soldiers with very real, bankable skills needed jobs, and being free of military order gave many the funds they needed to really live.

Alright, so with the explination of the world out of the way, on to the concept.

This rp is meant to be a transhumanist tale of soldiers misplaced by the normal system coming together to ply their skills in the private sector. Players are all full body cyborgs joining the Private Security Group *insert PMC name here* for reasons that I'll leave to the players. As far as the world itself goes, discrimnation against full body transplants is roughly equal to early American racial discrimination, though not as open. Cyborgs are relatively obvious on close examination, thanks to the clear lines of separation at joints and along the edges of various plating, as well as the iris of the eye appearing like a camera's aperture.

As explained in the world info above, military cyborgs have ballistic polymer plating in place of some major muscle groups which do give a more human appearance at a glance and at a distance, namely the pectoral and ab muscles. These plates are covered in a synthetic skin that is close to human skin, though not enough to fool someone for a prolonged period. Another benefit of military cybernetics is the increased physical capabilities of the mechanical bodies. Cyborgs can run faster and lift more weight, and take considerably more punishment. Also, due to the artificial sensory input, pain receptors can be lowered to allow soldiers to treat a gunshot as a threat indicator rather than a wound.

To allow the converted to feel slightly more 'human', sexual characteristics have also been replicated and can be adapted to preference. While this was originally a carry over from when cyberization was used by the rich, it has seen some use with military application and espionage. There is also the theory that cyborgs can completely alter their physical appearance down to the minute detail, though it has not been confirmed by any manufacturer.

With cyborgs being mechanical in nature, certain aspects of mechines have been introduced to their new beings, such as access ports to allow direct interface with external apparatus and wireless communication through internet connections.

Lastly, the group itself will be somewhat small, so I do hope we can get a good bit of diversity amongst the players. If interested, please post so here and if I have enough interest, I'll put up the character template. Thank you all in advance.

I'll put my name forward too.  I've been kind of binging on Infinity, Ghost in the Shell, and Metal Gear lately, so there isn't really a question of interest.

Correct me if I'm wrong because I've never actually played the game (just heard about it a lot), but isn't the whole deal of cyborgs not being well accepted in society and turning to PMCs and other security groups pretty reminiscent of Deus Ex ?
Anyway I like the idea a lot and I may be interested in playing it.  ;D

Interested for sure. Been looking for something sci-fi. If you are planning on actually using the old Cyperpunk roleplaying game for a system, it has been a long time. But I'm up for free-form or system. I'd just need to get pointed in the right direction for whatever system you use.

Provisionally interested depending on what rating/content section you'd be looking at

Cybernetics
Cybernetics technology has advanced to full prosthesis appearing much like natural appendages and bodies at a cursory glance. Under closer inspection, separation of the external plating is clear under the rubberized dermal layer, and the exoskeleton creates a very clear weight discrepancy even with the most light weight of materials. With military conversions, the lifting and running capacity of each unit has been increased far beyond their physical apparent limits. Their eyes have increased low light capabilities and a Heads Up Display system to monitor all their internal systems. Wireless systems built into the unit's cyberbrain allow closed network communication, though access ports placed into the back of the neck allow direct interface should additional security be required.

While standardization of soldier's individual models was an intended goal of cyberization, custom augments have become necessary for some. As augments grow more specialized, their level of concealment tends to fall by the wayside. Common specializations include multiple vision mode capable optic implants, implanted touch screen control modules placed in the arm, among many others.

Technology
Communication and information control has always been a concern at the turn of the 21st century. With the increased reliance on information feeding through to soldiers on the ground, the need for technicians to provide cyberspace protection became apparent. Drones and combat robots have also become a necessary evil on the battlefield, though AI is nowhere near complex enough yet to replace a soldier's presence and insight.

Weapons and Equipment
With the change in the target medium, so to did the method of inflicting harm on it. While the cold war issued in the age of the lighter high velocity round to allow soldiers to carry more ammunition, the age of cybernetics has flipped the concept on it's head. Soldiers could now carry heavier rounds in the same amount with the same ease, and the heavier rounds became necessary as soldiers became armor plated inherently. Caseless ammunition has also become a logistical necessity. The company the PCs are employed for have taken to an individual weapon system known as the R7 and R7A1 series adaptive combat rifle for their choice of primary weapon. In addition, other weapons have also been supplied to to the team's armory for use as needed. As for transpertation, the unit has access to any vehicle that they could require to fulfill the perimeters of their mission, from military combat vehicles to civilian sports cars.

Alright, that should give you all a good bit of info to start forming some characters. Be creative with your history and have fun with their abilities.

Character Name:
Player Name:
Age: Actual and Apparent if there is a discrepancy
Specialization: What is your character's role on the team?
Appearance: What sets you apart from a normal full body augment?
Personality: What makes you tick?
History: Where did they serve? Have the lost anyone close to them? Did they have a particularly rough childhood? Why did they join the military?
Preferred Loadout: Do they have a preferred weapon or variant? Do they carry more ammo or an external computer? Notable kit.
Sexual Preferences: Include basic ons and offs as well as their preference in partners

Florence

Have you been spying on me? I just started playing Metal Gear Rising again, so... gah, I think I may just have to make time for an rp like this.

On that note, are swords viable weapons in this setting? I can get into it either way, but it would effect what kind of character I make.
O/O: I was going to make a barebones F-list as a rough summary, but then it logged me out and I lost my progress, so I made a VERY barebones F-list instead: Here.

Blobbe

So any thoughts on what content level this would be? I'm interested if it's Light or Bondage

1SAZ

@KaylaM: Bondage should be fine unless someone gives me good reason it should go elsewhere.

@Florence: I'll answer your question in two parts. Will a sword that has been designed to cut through a cybernetic chassis perform well? Yes. Is it a viable combat weapon? Probably not. That said, I'm more than fine with some slightly over the top hijinks as long as you don't expect to run across the battlefield taking shots like candy.

Interested if this gets going, I too was reminded of Metal Gear Rising and I dig Eclipse Phase, so if this is still a thing, I'll make a character. :)

AndyZ

Interested, and setting down a placeholder as I work on the character.  I've just been busy of late.

Character Name: Samantha Beryn
Player Name: AndyZ
Age: 19
Specialization: Scout
Appearance: Having always wanted to try things from the other side (and to dissuade men who wouldn't leave her alone), Samantha had a penis installed, along with vibrating functions.
Personality: Sam comes off as pretty much perpetually friendly and nice, except in a crisis situation where everything shuts down and she becomes little more than her job.  Some people say that she's had an inhibitor to help deal with her emotions, but she fervently denies it.
History: She rarely discusses her childhood, but the truth is that she was born disabled.  Her mother attempted an abortion and her father had the money to spring to have the fetus kept alive.

So many people see their bodies as an innate part of themselves, but Sam has known virtually since birth that her mind and soul were what were important and made her an individual.  In many ways, she doesn't even identify with her old, crippled body.
Preferred Loadout: Sam generally prefers single-shot weaponry, usually a pair of oversized pistols which can fold down and fit into holsters in her thighs.  Her eyes are capable of night vision and thermal vision, and specific augmentations to her nervous systems can give her ridiculous mental speed for just long enough to aim guns at several different targets.
Sexual Preferences: Only interested in females, but doesn't care about genetics (Post-op Transfemales are totally cool.)

After bouncing around a few ideas, I think I'll go towards having my character be a heavy weapons type person. I assume with cybernetic enhancements, 'heavy weapons' can be pretty damn heavy.

I'm thinking Sniper or perhaps Cyberspace warfare specialist.

Also pondering if Stealth-Camo is a thing. Because I'd totally take some if it is!

Keaton

This sounds like it could be interesting and fun. Tentatively placing interest here.

A scout played by pdragon. Character got PMed to me rather than posted here. If you need help with a character or just want to check if everything works, feel free to PM me.

Ah, okay.  Glad I asked: I'll change my idea to something besides scout.

Figured I'd put up my character her so others could check it out, and just for future reference. Also Andy I don't think you'd necessarily have to change your character, they may both be scouts but I feel they'd probably differ enough to add unique aspects to it. Like Marissa is also a marksman in addition to scouting, so when the two go out she could find perches and places to scan the general area, while Samantha can do more thorough leg work scouting knowing she has someone spotting her. Also I noticed that both of our characters turned themselves into cyborg futas and have a taste for the ladies, so I imagine they'd get along really well, maybe play into the idea that they scout together because they've become close friends or something like that.

Character Name: Marissa Banks
Player Name: pdragon619
Age: 27
Specialization: Scout/Marksman
Appearance: For the most part her cyborg body is a perfect recreation of her original human one, though she had recently gotten a customization to "slot in" a synthetic phallus that synchs up to her nervous system to provide realistic feedback, and even produce artificial semen.
Personality:  Marissa likes to think of herself as a good person caught up in bad circumstances. She's quite and somewhat stoic for the most part, rarely speaking unless someone else has pulled her into a conversation, though she's not entirely antisocial. She knows when to cut loose when she has too (though a few drinks helps greatly in this pursuit) and once she's opened up she can be rather snarky and fun to hang out with. She suffers from episodic PTSD, and thus will sometimes freak out or become overly aggressive, even towards those she cares about. She is highly self-concious about these episodes, and tries to keep to herself in a quiet atmosphere out of fear of flipping and hurting someone she cares for. She also tries to be as good a mom as she can, and constantly tries to call or text her daughter, as well as fight her ex husband for visitation rights.
History: Marissa grew up a regular down home American girl, raised in a strict military household. With the increase of cybernetics opening new doors for women in the field, Marissa's father never took his daughter's gender as an excuse not to serve her country. Wanting to make her father proud she joined the service right out of highschool, and did two successful tours before returning to her home town, where she would meet her now ex-husband and father of her child Mark Lane. Despite Marissa rather blunt and tomboyish nature the two feel in love quickly, and within a year she had already gotten pregnant, the two sealing the deal with marriage not long afterwards.

However only a year after giving birth to their daughter, Casey Lane, Marissa was drafted back into the service for another tour in the middle east. It was during this tour that Marissa's squad where ambushed by an enemy group and lured into a mine field. Marissa managed to survive the resulting chaos of explosions and bullets, the only one in her squad to do so, but over 70% of her body was damaged beyond repair. The military, feeling responsible for pulling the woman from her family and almost costing her her life, offered to fund a new, cybernetic body for her. Seeing how it was either that or life in an iron lung, Marissa didn't have to think too hard to accept.

After completing out her tour with her new body, Marissa returned home to her family. Mark had heard about the incident, and while some of the others in the neighborhood where uneasy about having a military cyborg living amongst them, he was just happy she was alive and safe. However things quickly started to fall apart after that, having been trained her whole life solely to do military work, and being a cyborg on top of that, Marissa found it very difficult to find stable work. Not only that but the incident in the mine field would continue to haunt her endlessly, everything from survivors guilt, to phantom pain in her limbs, to sheer trauma from the near death experience. She started to become spaced out, distance, irritable. Mark tried to be understanding, and their daughter was still too young to really understand what was going on, but unfortunately things came to a head one night. The two were sleeping together, when Marissa had a vivid nightmare reliving the experience, this caused her to flip out and start attacking and pummeling the nearest person too her, which so happened to be her husband Mark. Being a normal human trying to defend himself against a fully trained cyborg, Mark obviously had no chance, and by the time Marissa came to her senses, Mark was lying bloody and bruised beneath her.

This ofcourse was the last straw. While he still cared about Marissa deeply, and wanted to try to be there to support her, at this point he was starting to fear for his life and their daughter's safety. Once he was released from the hospital he packed up his things and left, taking Casey with him. The divorce came soon after, and the court ruled that due to her psychological issues, and her "lack of humanity" as a cyborg, Marissa was unfit to be a proper care giver, and Mark was given full custody. Marissa was absolutely destroyed by this, and found herself slipping into depression. It wasn't until she got a contact from a PMC organization that acknowledged her talents that she started to come out of her slump. She tells herself that she's merely doing this so she can financially support her daughter, to try to give her a better life that what she had, but a much darker part of her believes this was just the way things were supposed to be. She was a soldier, a killer, the idea that she could have had a normal family life to begin with was just a sad farce. Still, she does find solace knowing she atleast has someone to fight for.

Preferred Loadout: Silenced R7 with high optic scope, High voltage "stun" machete, built in grapple and rappel wire, enhanced leg hydrolics and stability enhancers (allows for heightened agility and acrobatics), specialized combat suit and helmet with built in re-breather, voice scrambler, universal translator, and a variety of vision modes. And a standard .50 cal handgun with the name "Mark" scratched into the side.
Sexual Preferences: Pansexual, has taken an increased interest in women lately. Enjoys futa play, anal, oral, tit fucking, rough sex/simulated rape (not actual rape), participating in gang bangs, and cuddling.
What a thrill...with silence and darkness through the night....
