Recruitment

"Welcome to the 51st Hunger Games!  This is a truly an exciting time for Panem, that special time of year where preparations for the game begins, and you viewers count down to the day when the Tributes are presented for your entertainment.  Citizens remember to prepare your children for the Reaping, where they might just get the chance to become a Tribute, and if they're lucky, a Champion."

-Special Broadcast by President Coriolanus Snow

For those of you familiar with The Hunger Games trilogy, and even for those who aren't, this game revolves around the concept of a broadcasted death tournament.  Where 24 teenagers ages 16-18, one boy and one girl from each district, are chosen by lottery to become Tributes, fighters in the arena, desperately trying to kill each other, so that they might come out as the last person alive, the champion.

This game is firmly in the Extreme section, and character death is not only accepted, but likely to happen to every Tribute character, bar the winner.  This game also has an easy battle system to it, so easy that you don't need any experience with any other system to play.  Info on the system can be found HERE, and I urge any perspective player to peruse the wiki page for more information on the games setting.

Very interesting concept.  Are you planning to play through the whole selection/prelude stuff, or start right with the games?

undisclosedtoyou

The game will begin with the parade, and continue from there.  This is just to give the tribute characters time to meet each other, and interact, form alliances, before they're thrust into action.

boom!

*Snugs the Aly!*

Oooohhhhh, I can't believe that this game is finally up for recruitment, After all this planning, it's a little scary :P

Also, what do you think, should I fix up this thread, make the game sound more exciting?

That sounds intriguing. I have never heard of those books or games though and I feel a little unsettled. But I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it.

Is there much cruelty involved in that game? And what about bondage?

The thread looks great! I'll have a character hopefully done by later today. :D

It is considered EX most likely due to the brutal deaths each player's character can face in the game.

undisclosedtoyou

Let's see, I'd say yes, but that depends on your view of cruelty.  The books, involve 12-18(changed to 16-18 to follow E's guidelines) year old's to fight each other to the death, killing each other with weapons, all for sport and the entertainment of a nation.  So if you find that cruel, than yes.  As for bondage, I don't really see it happening, this game is battle based, there wouldn't really be opportunities to indulge in sexual bondage.  Maybe a character might bind another character, so they can't escape, but that would be the extent of that.

If you're not familiar with the books though, that's fine, I can PM you with info on where you can get a PDF version of it.

Thank you!  I didn't want to throw out too much info in this thread and overwhelm anyone, especially since all that info is located via the links.

And you're spot on about why this game is in EX.  *Smiles&Hugs*

Sooo... I couldn't sleep.  ::)

Adelaide, District 10
Name: Adelaide Juniper Colton

Division:District 10

Age: 17

Gender: Female

Height: 5’0”

Weight: 125 lbs

Eyes: Light Blue

Hair: Pale Blond

Skin tone: Lightly tan

Distinguishing Marks: Has a small burn on the inside of her left arm from a branding accident. A scar on the left side of her body from a runaway steer, it goes from her hip to right under Adelaide’s breast.

Physical Description: Even though she is short, Adelaide knows how to make herself notice. Windblown blond hair hangs loosely when not thrown into a simple ponytail, the length barely reaching her shoulder blades as anything longer would get in the way. Adelaide's skin is lightly tan from hours spending outside with the animals, fingernails chipped and uneven due to years of hard work. Her eyes are what her mother calls sky blue, and one of her most attractive features.

Likes: Adelaide enjoys the smell of the outdoors, the feel of rough leather against her skin. She will spend hours practicing with an aged whip that was given to her by her Grandfather. Along with being proficient with a whip, she is also handy with a lasso. Able to rope just about anything within her eye sight. Most of all Adelaide loves singing sometimes found singing to the new born animals when out in the pastures.

Dislikes: A strong hate for anyone that shows laziness. Disapproves of ones that are arrogant or takes advantage of the weak. Those that use manipulation in their favor and fakes kindness.

Fears: Enclosed spaces, when she was five she was accidentally trapped in the meat locker. Ever since Adelaide tries to avoid any sort of small place if trapped she will start to have a small panic attack. Most of all Adelaide fears Trackerjackers. A while back a group of farm hands and cattle got into a nest of them near the property line. She knows firsthand what horrible things they are capable of and how horrifying the results are.

Personality: Has a free of spirit that is allowed, Adelaide is polite and well spoken due to dealing with business transactions on her family’s farm. A huge animal lover she will often take care of the runt of any litter. Many say she is a natural with animals, able to calm down the wildest of beasts.

History: Growing up in District 10 on a modest farm, she was always around animals and nature. When Adelaide was four she faintly remembers watching her oldest brother compete in the Hunger Games, sadly he was killed the seventh night when his ally turned on him. Since then she secretly hated the games for taking away her brother. Always wishing that one year The Capitol could quit and no one else would have to lose a loved one.

Living on the farm was good for her, at times feeling as if The Capitol couldn’t reach them on their tiny plot of land. While working among the animals Adelaide uses a whip to help guide the herds. Never hurting them she simply grazed the cow’s side to make sure they went the right way. Even when not working she would still practice with whip, not wanting to get rusty and hurt an animal. Most of the time though she can be found simply sitting on the fence singing, enjoying the fresh air that District 10 had to offer when the factories weren’t in full effect.

Once Adelaide reached the age of sixteen she was fearful of becoming a tribute once the Hunger Games rolled around. The first year she was lucky and though she felt sorrow for those chosen, she cried into her pillow that night in relief at not being the one to leave. Still the threat loomed over her head and the following year, now the age of 17 she stood there with several other girls in the straight lines and sorted by age.

Dressed in the cleanest and best dress she owned, hair gently pulled back into a bun. Adelaide could feel her heart skip a beat as her name was announced over the sound system, the District Representative simply smiling as if they won a large reward. Eyes wide with disbelief she was escorted up to the stage, even now she barely remembers the day, everything happening in a blur. The thought of having to fight against a fellow member of the District and countless others dulled her senses. Mainly in shock she didn't talk or speak to anyone except her family when they came to see her off. Adelaide can't even recall the trip to The Capitol, everything just blurring together in the end.

I've read a bit of the original book and have a better feel about what this game is all about. Very interesting, and even more if some adult content is going to be mixed into the pot.

I'd like to apply for a tribute girl. I'm going to think of a character.

undisclosedtoyou

Aly she's wonderful!  I'll give you some time to add or subtract anything you like.  When you feel as if you're completely done, just PM me the code(wrapped in the code tag), and I'll add it to our character thread.  Good job Sweets!

I'm happy that your interested, especially after reading the book.  I suggest reading on the the other two books in the trilogy also, you can find those on the same sight, the first one is on.  As for adult content, as in sex, it's not disallowed, but it's not going to be a significant part of this game.  Everyone is trying to kill each other, that will be the focus, but lot's of fun will be had to.

Let me know if you need help building a character, or you can ask questions here  as well, if you like. :)

Only added a small thing, lassoing. Figure being a 'cowgirl' she would have some rope skills.  lol

PM heading your way Dis. :D

Accepted and posted Aly <3

Also, Lassoing rocks, I want to sooo learn to do that before I die.

It was not sex I had in mind but rather nudity, torture, abuse, maybe rape...

Could we imagine a rule that, if one character loses more than 50 HPs in a short time, s/he gets stunned, or incapacitated for a short time?

Also, there might be bonus points for those Tributes providing a better show when killing (i.e., slower, more cruel kill, or maybe some rape first...)

A better show could result in getting a parcel that night maybe? Or help in the odds of getting more 'sponsors'.

But in the book it described one Tribute that got so out of hand in their killing the GameMakers sent Peacekeepers in to kill them. So there is that to consider too.

Well yeah, there could very well be nudity, I got the feeling from the books that nudity wasn't that big a deal(considering Katniss thought that she probably would have to go nude for the parade in the first book, when she was thinking about how overboard the capitol stylist's usually are.)  Torture, yeah.  Abuse, yeah.  Rape, sure, although If it last's too long I'll prod some sort of trap to make the characters move on; this goes for consensual sex as well.  Also, I don't want too much sex in this game.  I'm not saying that's what anyone was suggesting, but I'm putting this out now, if this game progresses into some sort of orgy, I'll let loose with a fire or something to break it up.

I'm going to leave the the option of having a character pass out to the perspective players.  And as for parcel's, there's already a system for that.  I might make the parcel something really good, if the tributes put on a good show, but that's going to be up to me.  Also, if the parcel contains something like medicine, I'll add on a note that the character receives HP points, but that's about it.  Overall though, a Tribute wont have an idea of who sponsors them, unless it comes in the form of bread, for example, like in the books, where you can tell which district sent you bread, by what kind of bread it is.

But for all intents and purposes, I'll be the sponsors, so you all put on a good show, and if I find a character noteworthy, they'll receive something good.  I have some good things planned for this game though, so everyone's going to be on the tip of their toes here.

I'm very interested. I haven't read the Hunger Games books but I'm familiar with the concept. I'll add a profile for consideration later tonight after I read up on the rules and system some more.

As Promised:
Name: Sean Wingham
Division: District 4
Age: 17
Gender: Male

Height: 6'2"
Weight: 188 Lbs.
Eyes: Green
Hair: Brown
Skin tone: Light
Distinguishing Marks: None
Physical Description: Though not particularly muscular, Sean has speed and ferocity to spare. His features are well defined and sharp, from his eyes to his abs. His skin is very pale and his most striking feature are his eyes which can communicate his emotions clearly, sometimes against his will.

Likes: Books, bread, family, feeling powerful.
Dislikes: The Government, wealthy people, feeling powerless.
Fears: Being forgotten.
Personality: Brash and often confrontational, Sean is rebellious and protective of himself and his emotions. He's been cautioned several times by friends and family that he can't continue to go through life with a chip on his shoulder without gathering the attention of The Government, but his rebellious nature wouldn't allow him to listen.

History: Son of a baker's assistant, Sean was too small to remember his older brother who was selected as a Tribute in the Hunger Games sixteen years ago. His brother, as most tributes do, died in the Arena and from that day, Sean's father dedicated himself to not letting the same happen to his second son, though he would never admit it out loud. Sean never really understood why it was so important that he go running every morning, or camping at every possible opportunity.

When pressed, Sean's father always said that the reason for his obsessive parenting strategy was because he was trying to turn him into a man. He'd never admit that the training was related to the Hunger Games or the son he'd lost, but it was sort of an understanding between them.

As Sean reached his teenage years, his father realized his dream of opening his own bakery. The new job meant that his father no longer had time to spend with Sean and it led to his son's rebellion. He felt abandoned by his father and his brother who he'd never known and started causing trouble in school and at home.

It's been a secret hope of Sean's for years to participate in The Hunger Games as a tribute. He's very full of anger but only time will tell if that proves to be an advanage or a liability.
I've been in a rut lately, but I'm working on catching up. Sorry for any delay.

Great character write up!  I screamed Peeta when reading it, because he reminds me of that character from the book, but in a good way.

Umm, under fears, can you add something a little more physical.  There's a reason why I'm asking, but that won't be revealed until later in the game.  Once you're done with it, feel free to PM it to me, wrapped in the code tag, and I'll add it up to the character thread. :)

Ah, no worries, I finished everything today before I got on here. :) It's done, I'm just a little confused on how to get it on here with the picture. I know I need to upload it to Wiki, but I don't know how to tag it or anything like that. Just got approved yesterday...

undisclosedtoyou

You don't need to upload the picture to the elluiki, unless you want to of course.  You can upload it onto a site like Photobucket, and use the IMG code that it gives you to post the picture up.  If you upload it to the Elluiki, the first page has a link to the how to properly label the uploads.

As for the written part, just copy paste it into this thread, so I can look it over for approval, or you can send it to me via PM.

Also, welcome to E, Grace!

Okay, I figured it out. I found the tutorial thread. Thanks. :) Okay here it is.

Name: Alexis Valhorn
Division:District 2
Age: 17
Gender:Female

Height:5’5”
Weight:138
Eyes:Medium brown with a swirl of green.
Hair:Dark brown
Skin tone:Pale
Distinguishing Marks:She has a scar that looks similar to an arrow head on her left wrist. Also a scar that starts at the top of her shoulder and runs down her arm to the tip of her elbow that was caused by a sword.
Physical Description:She's of average height, with long dark brown hair that is usually pulled back into a simple braid. Her sister always commented on how beautiful her hair was, so she decided to keep it long in memory of her sister. She’s pale from being in the mines cutting stones and in the factories where the weapons are made. Her nails are cut short so they don't get in the way of her work. She looks pretty fit; her muscles are just visible enough to know she has strength.

Likes:She likes to read when she has the time to. She likes to practice with the weapons her and her family makes when she sneak off and do so without getting in trouble. She also likes to spend hours watching people move about their day, watching their movements, their awkwardness, and the way they hold themselves when they are angry, sad, happy, or anxious.

Dislikes:She dislikes the capitol even though she lives in better living conditions than most of the other districts. She dislikes the fact that everyone around her doesn't seem to care. She dislikes bloody meat, any green foods, and the color yellow.

Fears: She fears heights and wild dogs.

Personality:She used to be very energetic and happy with her life, but after the death of her sister, she became closed off from everyone. She's now pretty quiet around everyone, including her parents. She keeps to herself when she can, and only talks when she has to. She focuses on her job and when she can practice for the Hunger Games.

History: Two Hunger Games ago she was the perfect daughter and sister. She looked up to her sister with every fiber of her being. She thought nothing of the Capital or the Hunger Games. She and her sister were inseparable, they worked in the same area together, cooks dinner together, laughed at jokes together. They never did anything that could get them in trouble or their family in trouble, but when that fateful Hunger Games came around, her sister's name was drawn and no one took her place. Her sister was willing, she told Alexis that she'd win for her and she's come back for her.

The day Alexis had to watch her sister die, was the day she cut herself off from everyone around her. She started hating the world and everyone in it but then soon pin pointed it to just hating the capital and anything that dealt with it. From then on she started illegally practicing for the Hunger Games. She knew she wasn't ready last Hunger Games, but this one she feels she will be able to win. She has spent time practicing with the swords, knives, and bows that her District is forced to make for the capital. The only time she had been suspected of using those weapons for gains of her own was when she cut her self with the sword against her shoulder and the arrow head on her wrist. Other than that, no one knew anything of what she was doing, that or they didn't care.

I just wanted to say, for anyone who might find it a turn off from joining this game.  While character death is a big part of the game, the number of HP points, starting off, ensures that everyone will have plenty of time to play before a character is killed off.

Sorry it took me a little longer than intended!

Name: Varin Partlow
Division: District 11
Age: 16
Gender: Male

Height: 5'10"
Weight: 175
Eyes: Green
Hair: Black
Skin tone: Tan
Distinguishing Marks: Tattoo on his inner bicep of a sheaf of wheat which he got the night his name was drawn for the games.

Physical Description: Varin is a handsome youth with striking green eyes and features that are almost effeminate which is in contrast with a lean, muscular body earned by years of hard work. His hair is black and cropped close to his head, his skin lighter in tone than most of his friends and family. He has an infectious smile and a slow, confident stride, both of which seem to invite interest.

Likes: Attention, music, the little comforts, sweets
Dislikes: Complainers, mean drunks, his biological father
Fears: Deep water, being a nobody his whole life

Personality: Varin has an easy smile and a devil may care attitude that would seem to indicate he's at peace with his lot in life. His looks always drew him attention and he's learned to use that and is already quite popular back in his district. But even with this advantage, nobody in district 11 gets away with shirking and he was never one to draw negative attention to himself by slacking off so he knows how to work though it could be said he's something of an opportunist. He prefers to remain in the company of friends as much as possible because when he's alone the smile tends to fade and he has too much time to think about the long, dreary grind his life will inevitably be.

History: Varin was born into a big family, pretty status quo for the district, though before he hit his teens he lost three of his siblings to childhood illness and accident. These early deaths made a big impression on him and he became determined to get the most out of life anyway he could for as long as he could. His family was broken, his father struggling to keep everything together while his mother was out catting around and trying to get out of work anyway she could which eventually led her to being arrested for theft and disappearing from the family altogether. Varin became estranged from his father, however, when they got in a argument and it was revealed that Varin was someone else's child from one of his mother's affairs. Worse, he was the bastard of a peacekeeper his mother had been sleeping with for extra rations. Sickened by the revelation, Varin left home after that and lived a  bit like a gypsy, staying with friends and his mother's relatives, each for a time before moving on to the next one, never quite losing a sense of shame over his parentage. Varin is a talented singer and was often called upon to perform at gatherings and occasions such as weddings and funerals. It's the one thing in life he truly loves.

Okay... here she is... let me know if anything needs tweaking.

Diamond, District 1 tribute

Name: Diamond Winters
Division: District 1
Age: 18
Gender: Female

Height: 5'8”
Weight: 120 lbs
Eyes: A tawny brown.
Hair: Medium brown with natural highlights. Reaches mid back with a natural wave to it.
Skin tone: Light tan
Distinguishing Marks: Thin but neatly healed scars all over her back.

Physical Description: Diamond is on the taller side and is easily described as both athletic and curvy. She is considered quite the heart-breaker in her district with many suitors seeking her father's favor hoping to marry her since to them she represents both the inherent strength and beauty of her namesake. She rarely smiles or laughs genuinely though few are able to tell.

Likes: Quiet moments alone (she doesn't get many), dancing, working with her hands to make something useful or beautiful, freedom, oranges. Finely crafted knives.
Dislikes: Being watched, her parents, those in power, having her hand forced, intense heat.
Fears: Nothing! ...at least that's what she'll tell you. Really she fears turning out like her family or those in the Capital, being restrained, marriage, and fire (as in an out of control fire, not a camp fire or small flame).

Personality: Diamond is fierce, commanding, unafraid, and utterly ruthless... all because she has to be. Outwardly, she is good at playing up whichever attributes she feels best suits the moment, however, most often she appears somewhat cold and aloof, choosing to keep to herself. It is easy to assume she is more than a little arrogant, vain, conceited and even dimwitted but really, more than anything, Diamond is cautious and observant. A life under her parents thumb and the watchful gaze of her District has taught her to purge all weakness or hide it like hell.

History: Flawless. That's what her father called her. He'd raised her to be his flawless Diamond, the one that would keep their family in the limelight while others faded away. There was never any question that she would volunteer to be tribute at some point and that she would come away a victor, nevermind the fact that she hadn't wanted that for herself. She would do it because her family demanded it of her and that was that.

Diamond was born in District 1 to a wealthy family. Her father had been a Victor some years ago and with the fame and fortune his survival guaranteed him came a life of privilege and comfort and yet there too was an odd sense of duty. Her father felt that as a victor he was expected, no, needed to produce a victor in the next generation for his family and his district. He had four children, three boys and one girl, and each was trained to be the very picture of perfection. They would be prime specimens of physical prowess while also maintaining the shiny veneer of a wealthy family.

Diamond, despite being the youngest, was pushed just as hard as her brothers if not more so. She attended the required schooling and learned all the necessary skills that would allow her to smoothly transition to the workforce when she needed to to keep up appearances. Of course, with her father still living and her mother the Mayor's daughter, it was unlikely she would need to any time soon. Still, Diamond liked the quiet times she spent creating something that would later be used or admired. In her off time she practiced her hand to hand combat techniques and found a particular skill with throwing knives and short blades. She was not allowed to indulge in any mischief and frivolous pastimes were shunned in favor of “practicing”. Under her father's rigid demands she quickly learned to be what he expected and nothing less or suffer punishment.

Like her brothers before her, once Diamond was of age she entered the pool of potential tributes, the selection process being a bit different in their district since many chose to volunteer. It was decided before hand that she was one of their strongest candidates and that she would claim the female spot in her last year of eligibility. Though she didn't want to, she knew her life would be a living hell (or ended outright) if she refused to volunteer so when the time came she stepped forward and did as she was told.

Diamond now views the games as a way out. She figures she will either emerge the victor and be free of her father's nearly abusive control (nevermind that she will assuredly become a puppet of the Capital) or she will die in the arena and forever be beyond his grasp. Her desire to live and truly know freedom (or what passes for it these days) drives her. Something inside of her will not let her just lay down and die so she will fight, and she will win... one way or another.

It's not weird at all.  To be honest, I like it that most of the characters will die.  Of course, second characters, ones that are not tributes are open for players to take.  And those who die in the game, are more than welcome to create a non tribute character afterwards.

As for the books, I found the last one took me a bit longer to read to.  I think it's mainly because I knew it was the last one, and I didn't want it to end.

I love a good game where character death is always possible, puts you on the edge of your seat and makes you wonder what will happen next. :D

I zoom through the first two in about three hours, Mockingjay took me a bit longer. Either I was wiping the tears off my Kindle screen or not wanting to read the next page cause I didn't wanna know what was going to happen next. Collins really knows how to reel a person into her stories...

I thought this was great, some fans built a make-shift Hob while camping out at the premiere of The Hunger Games.

Kokaine

I loved the first one, the second pulled me in too but so far I haven't gotten as deep into the third. Might just be my overall mood as of late though.

Kinda wish I could have gone to the Hollywood premiere since its in my neck of the woods. But another week and a half won't kill me.

I was kind of comflicted about the third book but in the end I felt more positive than negative about it I think.

So we can have second characters but they can't be tributes? But any of the surrounding staff is fair game?

undisclosedtoyou

I agree with Niferbelle, while I hated certain bits of the book, when I finished reading it I was left with more positive than negative feelings.

When I first opened this game, I considered allowing a player to play up to two tributes, but thought that since they are all playing against each other, it would work out better if there was only one to a player.  But the surrounding staff is good, stylist's, and past champions.

I didn't want to look at this because I knew I'd be sucked in and I totally was. I can't resist putting up a character for consideration.

District 4 Tribute Ari King
Name: Ari King
Division: Division 4
Age: 16
Gender: Female

Height: 5'6
Weight: 117lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black
Skin tone: Pale Cream
Distinguishing Marks: heavily calloused hands
Physical Description: Thin and willowy Ari is striking with such dark coloring against light skin tone that even exposed to a great deal of sun never seemed to tan. She has long legs and it a bit lanky but in an oddly elegant way, she has small curve that accent her hips and chest though they're understated because of her general lack of body fat.

Likes: The ocean, swimming, strawberries, the smell of the rain, storms in general, running, and singing.
Dislikes: Jelly fish(those little buggers sting), chattery people, crowds, and the color yellow.
Fears: Loosing people and the peace keepers.
Personality: Ari is near completely anti social. She is confined and often haunty with other. She is nearly always smirking like she's in on a secret the rest of the world is not. Besides her father she interacts with few people though in her youth she was very social and was known for her quick wit and easy smile. When she does talk with others or interact she is distant often using sarcasm to keep others at arms length from her, besides her father she is a solitary person driven by her one desire to escape an average mundane life.

History:Ari's life was a happy one for the first part of her life. Her dad was a fisher and a good one too. Her mother was a healer who helped the locals and together they created a comfortable life for Ari who lived in a rather easy life. In school she was popular and happy making friends easily and enjoying herself. She was a vibrant girl who laughed easily and smiled often. She was pretty and energetic too smart at times and was far too stubborn for her own good.

This probably would have been blessedly easy for Ari her whole life if it weren't for her mom. Ari's mother Samantha was caught selling some of the capitals precious drugs to those that needed them as part of a smuggling ring who stole them from the Peace Keepers. Though the locals regarded her of something of a hero for helping those in need the Peace keepers weren't of a like mind. They made an example of Samantha the only guilty person of the ring they could find. Ari came home from school to find out the Peace Keepers had killed her mother.

She changed over night after that. She withdrew into herself and started working on her fathers boat instead of going to school. From him she learned a great deal from how to tie knots and weave to how to use a knife to gut a fish and in private to defend herself. She worked hard but as she grew up she had no direction. She wanted nothing of the life her mother and father had shared for she feared loosing anyone she loved. she didn't want mundane. She craved excitement and thrilled to risks. Locals called her crazy for she did things that paralyzed others with fear laughing with mirth as she did.

One day watching the games she'd smirked and nudged her father, "I'm going to win that." he'd given her a grave look and stared at her for a long time, "I'd often wondered if you'd bother to tell me." She'd flushed then turning away. She'd played with the idea of volunteering for a few years now though she hadn't realized she'd been so obvious in her musings. She could imagine no future she wanted and she lived for the thrills of life. What could be more thrilling then fighting for ones life in the games?

After that the focus in her life changed. Though she was willing in a passive way to throw her life away her father was not. He paid every extra cent he had to see her trained by those who knew how. She learned to use a trident and a rope, a knife and even a slender light weight sword. Her body took on a hardened quality it had lacked while she worked for her father. She ran and swam every day and at 16 was in her top physical condition.

Her father was still trying to talk her out of going but she was determined. Her old friends were marrying her father was getting offers. She loathed the idea of a married life, she didn't want attachments. This was her chance, her escape. This year she'd spare some poor unprepared girl the trials of having to face the prospect of her own death and would take her place and seek the thrill she craved.

TheRedFear

lol For me it's a triple issue.

1) The character will likely die anyway.
2) I'm not very familiar with the setting beyond what I read in the wikis.
3) The character concept I came up with is one where I'd probably need more setting familiarity to make it make sense.

Basically the idea was sort of a "Tribute", but from a poor district(the farming one that can't feed itself). Not a real "Tribute" in the sense of being loyal to the empire and hailing from a wealthier district, but one who trained for the Games with the only weapon his poverty-stricken district could afford...his wits and his bare hands.

That's where i'm stuck though. Can't really think of who gave him this training or why. "For fame and glory" ain't doing it for me. And the extra food rations for the winning district doesn't seem sufficient motivation either. Not for a district so destitute. I can't imagine they'd get enough to have a lasting impact.

If a sensible motivation comes to me maybe i'll stop resisting.

Hahaha, well I'm glad you did get sucked in.  Your character has been approved, and can be found in the character thread, here.  And with your character, the District 4 tributes are all taken :)

So these are the tribute positions still open:

District 2 - 1 Male Tribute spot Open.
District 3 - 1 Male, and 1 Female Tribute spots open.
District 4 - No Tribute spots open.

I can help you with most of those issues.  I know the fact that character death is not only a possibility but expected of most characters can be a major turn off.  But I also feel as if it's an interesting factor, I will admit that it's mostly intriguing to those who have read the books, but I think it can be just as fun for those who haven't.  It's definitely going to be a survivalist battle oriented game, and I think the fact that all the characters could potentially die gives a certain edge to it, that wouldn't be there if all the players came in knowing their characters were all going to live.  But to balance it out, the game itself will be starting with the parade of the champions, which will than lead into a short stint with all the characters training together, learning different skills, and showing off what they can do in front of a group of those involved with the game(A.K.A me, the gamemaster.)  So there will be plenty of time to hash out your character, get used to him or her, and create pact's and deals with other characters from different districts.

As for setting, a lot of the districts have little information about them, since there are a few that are just never mentioned beyond a base description of some of the tributes that hale from them.  I can help fill in any holes though, but for the most part, if you create a character from a district with little details given in the wiki, you'll have a lot of wiggle room to make up details that would be helpful for your character.

Your idea is actually fitting for the setting, to be honest, most of the citizens from the less well off districts aren't loyal to the capitol, since their motivation to follow orders are fueled by fear more than anything else.  I'd actually suggest throwing a PM Alysanthia, since her character hails from the animal farming district, and she has a pretty good idea of the setting and plus it might give you guys a chance to come up with a possible shared history.

As for training, when it comes to the poorer districts, it's unlikely that those chosen to be a tribute(because volunteering to be one is uncommon in these areas) would have any training.  But this is where you can get creative.  In the books, Katniss, hails from the 12th district, which is coal mining.  She didn't train for the games, didn't even want to go, if it weren't for the fact that she was trying to save her sister.  She gained her skills by sneaking out of the district(since at that time the peacekeepers were lax, and starvation was rampant) to hunt illegally for food in the woods.  She was trained by her father, who had been doing this before her, and she must have gotten a few tricks from her hunting companion.  It would actually be better, in my mind if a character from these districts don't know how to handle a regular weapon like a sword, but has some skill that can be twisted in a way that would help them survive.

As for motivation to win.  Well, those who are chosen in the poorer districts, the need to live is a big one.  Although their lives aren't the best ones, they would still want to survive.  Also, the extra food rations are great, but the champions who win get to live out the rest of their lives in wealth.  They get their own home in the Victors village(a part of the district where nice houses are built and empty until a victor comes along to claim one,) and never have to worry about money, food, or poverty.  Which can be a really big incentive for those who lived moment to moment wondering if they'd die or not.

I hope I helped, even if just a little bit.

TheRedFear

Name: Valen
District: 12
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Height: 6'3
Weight: 220lbs
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Skin tone: Lightly tanned
Distinguishing Marks: Calloused hands, Scarred forearms from a dog mauling
Physical Description: He does his best to hide his physical stature with slouched shoulders, and oversized clothing but to see him shirtless you would never believe he emerged from the malnourished District 11. He is muscular, athletic, and clearly far more well fed than most of his neighbors.

Likes: Fighting, Hunting, sleeping under the stars, Chess

Dislikes: Panem. Peacekeepers. Canines.

Fears: Canines in General. Wolves very specifically. . During one of his wilderness survival exercises he became separated from Cora. A desperately hungry pack of wolves picked up his scent and hunted him for two days. Every time he thought he'd thrown them off his trail they'd pick up his scent again and continue the hunt. On the second night they cornered him in a cave and forced him into a ferocious, desperate fight for his life. Only the ironic fact that the District 11 brat was better nourished than the wolf pack gave him a fighting chance. He was still badly mauled in the ensuing struggle. Though he emerged victorious the sound of a growl, snarl, or howl has sent shivers down his spine ever since. It was his first real brush with death.

Personality: Valen has been preparing for this his entire life. He was been raised to hate the Capitol and President Snow for as long as he can remember. Though he questioned this for a time, he ultimately decided that it was right, and fair, and just to hate the Capitol and it's president. Perhaps more than anything else though Valen wants to make his mother proud, and avenge the injustices inflicted upon her. Ever since he learned how he was conceived he has harbored a sense of shame. Much of his motivation is an attempt to atone for the sins he feels that he inherited the night he was conceived.

History: Cora was a ghost. The peacekeepers had come to her farm almost two decades ago. She was the most beautiful girl in District 12. Surely such vigor and health and beauty must have meant her family was illegally hording food. Food meant for the Capitol. That was the flimsy rationale those men used to justify the drunken gang rape that spiraled even more tragically out of control and culminated in the slaughter of her entire family and the razing of her farm.

Ever since that night, men occasionally whispered of seeing Cora in the dark mists of early morning when they went to check on their crops. And every time a Peacekeeper vanished, they whispered that Cora struck from beyond the grave.

Nine months after the myth of Cora began, a newborn baby was abandoned at a farm on the edge of the district. Along with a freshly slaughtered Deer. He had only a single word stitched into his diaper. Valen. The family almost turned him away, barely able to feed themselves let alone a new mouth. But that deer would feed them for a good long time, and they did not feel right taking the meat and abandoning the child. Over the ensuing years every few months a mysterious boon of food would be found on the farm. Sometimes a freshly slain animal. Sometimes food rations that could only have been stolen from the Peacekeeper's stocks.

Over the years to follow, Valen grew up stronger and healthier than most District 12 kids, thanks in no small part to the frequent Gifts his family received from their mysterious benefactor. But Valen was a bright young man and it didn't take him long to start puzzling the pieces together. Very often, a night or two before they received their Boon...or a night or two after...one of the local District Peacekeepers would vanish. "Reassigned"...that's what the other Peacekeepers would say. But people saw the fear in their eyes. People heard the whispers of the name 'Cora'.

These occurrences kept people distracted and ensured they had bigger concerns than the fact that the people on one particular farm seemed a bit better fed than most 12's. Valen asked his 'father' one day and confirmed what he suspected. The first Peacekeepers to vanish were the ones who burned down Cora's farm. All but one who'd been reassigned to the Capitol. Valen knew in his gut that Cora was no ghost. She was real. She was alive. She was out there....and she was his mother.

Whether or not the Peacekeepers knew the truth or believed the myth the end result was the same. They were scared. Scared enough to avoid the area where Cora's angry spirit was said to prowl. It created holes in their security network Valen could slip through everyday as the child went in search of his mother. And eventually he found her. Or she found him.  Same result.

Half of her face still held the beauty that once made her famous throughout District 12. The other half was claimed by the fires that had taken both her family and her soul. And all that remained where her heart once rested was a burning lust for vengeance. Against the Peacekeepers. Against the Capitol. Against President Snow. And against Guerra...the man who had planted Valen in her womb and been fortunate enough to be reassigned before she had sufficiently recovered from the injuries he inflicted that night.

Valen looked into the cold, haunted eyes of his mother and knew without words that a choice lay before him. Turn back...return to the farm and live like all the rest of District 12...or become a weapon in Cora's war. Victim or Avenger.

He chose Avenger.

They had no real weapons to work with. Snatching a bit of food was one thing but the Peacekeeper weapon stores were too well guarded even for Cora to risk. But then Cora had always found weapons weren't really necessary if you had sharp wit, and a strong resolve. The human body can do more damage than most people think if you can overcome your instinctive squeamishness and fully commit to the death or maiming of another human being. Cora quickly found that when she hid the disfigured portion of her face it was child's play to lure unsuspecting Peacekeepers close enough for surprisingly strong fingers and sharp fingernails to dig into his eye-socket or stab at his throat with poison-dipped twigs before he knew what had hit him.

Cora taught Valen how to look weak and draw his prey in until the moment to strike was at hand. She taught him to hunt. To craft his own crude but effective bows. Sharpen his own spears and arrows. Eat his own kills without the benefit of flame that would give away his position at night to patrolling Peacekeepers. But above all she taught him that at the end of the day all that truly stood between him and death was his wit and his body. Swords and Spears could break. Arrows throwing knives deplete. But his eyes, his fists, his feet, and his brain could always be trusted to carry him through the flame if he guarded for them well and trained them daily.

They never took the weapons from the Peacekeepers they killed. As long as nothing was stolen from the dead peacekeepers that turned up once or twice a year it fueled the myth of the vengeful ghost. Nobody bothers to search for a vengeful spirit. But if they think a real flesh and blood killer is taking Peacekeeper weapons to start an armed insurgency....that they search for.

So just as Cora had learned to fight without weapons, so she taught Valen. How to kill their enemy before they ever drew steel...or how to disarm their enemy when guile was not an option. How to kill with strikes to the throat. To blind with gouges to the eyes. To disable with broken limbs or blows to the kidneys. Cora always told Valen he would never need a weapon, because he would become a weapon. Her weapon. And he embraced his role as the instrument of his mother's vengeance. He felt it was the least he owed her for the shame of having had to birth her rapist's son.

Sometimes Cora would vanish for weeks, even months at a time leaving Valen to fend for himself with what she taught him. One day she returned from one of these excursions with information from an influential source. The Peacekeeper in charge of security for this year's Hunger Games would be none other than Guerra himself. Father of Valen. Violator of Cora. She needed say no more. Valen knew only one way to ensure he went to the games this year.

#93
Name: Kainene Olaana Morgan
Division:District 11
Age: 16
Gender: Female

Height:5’7
Weight: 115
Eyes:Green
Hair:Brown
Skin tone: Caramel tone
Distinguishing Marks:Scratches on her hands and arms
Physical Description: Her skin is a bit tanned from working out in the fields throughout hot summers. She's fairly small due to lack of food to go around the village, but it's the perfect size for stealth.

Likes:  Food, water, pleasant memories, and shelter
Dislikes:The Capitol, whips, sleep, nightmares
Fears: Whips, Trackerjackers
Personality: Before the abrupt death of her family, Kainene was a friendly girl, who was willing to give a friendly smile to anyone around her. She always enjoyed being around her small group of friends in the fields. Yet the death of her family made her cold towards anyone who might attempt to speak with her. Rather than handle her grief in a productive way, she has blocked out most of her emotions in the hopes of forgetting the pain of their deaths. She’s still plagued with nightmares of her mother’s screams.

History: Growing up, Kainene heard stories of how the world used to be from her father before Panem formed since he’d heard the stories from his own father. He hoped these tales would make his daughter have hope for the future, for something better than the meager lifestyle in front of her, but all it did was confused her. She did not understand why the Capitol sought to punish them so severely for crimes her family did not personally commit. They were put in charge of harvesting and planting a variety of different herbs and vegetables for the better districts. Her family did not live in what was considered the nice side of town so it was always difficult for them during the colder months when rain would drip from the roof. One might expect for them to eat better than others since there was a source of food around them, but there were strict punishments for eating from the trees. So every day and the random night, her family was forced to tend to the trees without having barely a bread crumb at home to eat for themselves. Due to her curiousness, Kainene got too close to trackerjacker nest. She fell from the tree trying to get away from them while running towards her mother. Both of them received stings, but her mom managed to protect her from the worse of them. To this day, she hates the sight of them due to the memory of their aggression without relenting until destroyed or calmed down with smoke.

When her mother became sick, her father began to steal potatoes from their workplace with the hopes of helping her mother fight back against the illness. Her father never took more than necessary, just enough to feed her mother since she needed more strength to stay alive. When he was caught, the Peacekeepers whipped him until the skin on his back was ripped and raw, but he bravely continued to steal with the hopes of helping Kainene’s mother get well enough to live. He was caught two more times before one of the guards decided to kill him to set an example for the rest of the district since they did not want people getting ideas about stealing not being a serious offence. Her father was brutally killed in front of her innocent eyes, and no one could help him. Without enough food to feed her mother, she became even sicker and more miserable with each passing day. Towards the end of her life, her mother begged for death while constantly crying out in pain. The sound of it nearly drove Kainene insane.

One night, she woke up out of her sleep and suffocated her mother since the sound of the screams were too much for her to bear anymore. No one suspected her of foul-doing since everyone knew of her illness. Without her parents around to help or guide her, she became bitter and angry towards the capital, the rules, and the locals for not helping her father. Kainene no longer cares for her appearance so the once well-kept hair of her youth has become matted with dirt and other types of vermin while there are bruises on her body from getting into trouble with both locals and the capitol guards every now and then. Some people have accused her of stealing from their homes. There is no doubt in her mind that some people were happy to see her go when her name was called since she was becoming quite the nuisance.

I was thinking he didn't have a last name. On the wiki many many(I dare say the overwhelming majority) of characters seemed to be mono-named. Cato, Thresh, Rue, and so on. Near as I could tell they were all one name chars. I assumed that was a norm in this setting.

If one is absolutely necessary....ummm...errrr...Tenaz. Valen Tenaz.

In the books you ever really learn a few of the character's last names. Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mallark, Gale Hawthorne, Effie Trinket, and etc...

I was always curious about the other tribute's last names.

Looks like there are seven female spots open still. :)

Yeah, it was always my view that a lot of the characters in the books didn't have their surnames mentioned, simply because there was neither the time or the necessity to give them.  Rue for example, had the time to give her last name, but to be honest the situations she and Katniss were in together, giving a last name just didn't seem like something that was all that important to give.  But the fact that some characters were given surnames means that they exist in that universe, so they shall be provided on the character sheet.  I'll add Tenaz to it in a jiffy.

I do agree with Aly though, I was always curious about the surnames to :)

Name: Kenzie McCoy
Division: District 3
Age: 16
Gender: Female

Height: 5'1"
Weight: 104 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Dirty Blonde
Skin tone: Fair
Distinguishing Marks: Whip scars across her back.
Physical Description:
She is small, quick, and agile, but the first thing people tend to notice about her these days is her chest, which is a bit large in proportion to the rest of her - not to an extreme, but significant enough anyway.  She has a small frame and is quite slender, like her parents.  She is athletic, though not interested in conventional sports, at least not those allowed by law.  She has developed her athletic abilities through parkour, which she enjoys greatly, despite the fact that her parents (among others) have tried to put a stop to it.
Likes: Staying hidden, bright colors, technology, freedom, self-improvement, knowledge, guile
Dislikes: Foolishness, immaturity, bullies, oppression, dark colors, attention
Fears: Imprisonment, brain damage, public nudity, loss of control, excessive attention
Personality:
Her father is a programmer who has developed well-known software for The Capitol's computer systems, both government and civilian.  Her mother is a professor at one of the district's tech schools.  Kenzie has grown up in a world that doesn't understand her - at least that's how she sees it (pretty much like any sixteen year old).  With her, it's probably more true.  Society wants to keep her locked away, where she can't threaten the established regime, but all she wants to do is run free and explore the world.  She wants desperately to learn all that she can, to go where she pleases, and see everything.  Unfortunately, this desire conflicts with her need to avoid attention.  This need probably developed out of necessity, always getting punished for simply wanting to learn the things they didn't want her to learn.  She has learned to hide and avoid attention by wearing dark and color-less clothes, which she hates.  She wishes she could dress the way she wants - like they do in The Capitol, and she is jealous of them for it.  However, her "urban camouflage" has served her well when she is out running free in the world, evading the patrols, and exploring her reality.  Even when she is locked away in her room, she explores in a different way - absorbing knowledge through books and other sources, whatever she can get ahold of.  Some of these books she has found during her secret escapades across the walkways and rooftops of her District.  She is fairly certain that if anyone found out she had them, they'd take them away, and probably worse, so she has learned how to hide objects well.  She is a conflicted individual, but she has learned to derive strength from these conflicts, instead of letting them hold her back.

History:
For most of her life, Kenzie was too small and uninteresting to draw attention, but as she grew into a teenager, she strove to find a personal identity.  Not content to simply be a hybrid of her father and mother, she looked inward, trying to figure out who she was underneath her heritage.  She discovered a need for liberation and a quiet unyielding anger against the government that held her down.  Unlike her parents, she was not content to simply obey and service the state.  She saw a world that tempted her with knowledge and learning, and wanted to explore it, but it was always just beyond her reach.  So she learned to hide and sneak and escaped out into that world.  The first time she was caught by patrols and severely whipped, and this kept her in check for a while, tormented by nightmares of her experience, but she resolved to turn the fear of her nightmares into a strength, and looked into the dreams to find the subconscious clues left in her memory which she would use to outwit the patrols and run free again.  She never got caught again, knowing that it would mean death, but what she didn't know was that someone was aware of her escapades.  By the age of sixteen, she had proven remarkable on intelligence and knowledge tests, and had - unbeknownst to her - attracted the wrong kind of attention from someone deep inside the government.  Her name came up in the lottery, and everyone thought it was just bad luck.  The Peacekeepers said she represented the best aspects of her district: intelligence and determination.  But the things she'd seen - the conversations she'd overheard - she knew that this was their way to get rid of her.  She knew that she had gotten too close to something on her last adventure in the city.  She always saw interesting things when she explored the city.  She wondered what it might have been that they thought she saw, and she wondered why they chose this way to engineer her death.  Surely there were cheaper, quicker ways?

OOC: I'm taking some creative license here to establish that there is a mysterious entity (individual or organization) in the government which has essentially allowed her to break the law, making her think she was avoiding patrols.  Their motives are unknown.  Perhaps they are using her to study the psychology of potential rebels?  Perhaps the Games will allow them to see how rebels think when they are faced with life and death.  Or maybe it's more complex than that.  Maybe this organization actually wanted her to find something that could threaten the government.  Maybe they want her to win.  I'm purposely not deciding this right now, because it makes it more interesting.  I like to create characters with opportunities like this for the gamemaster to have some fun with the character too.

Okay, so your character has been approved.  But as for the rebel/capitol thing, I'm keeping these things in the background, and they wont be a big part of this game, at least until we get closer to the 74th Hunger Games(which is a goal of mine.)  But, if your character wins, I'll work something out with you about a possible outcome that involves the Capitol and it's sub division that watches over rebels.  But you all have to remember that things like going out of bounds isn't something that would gain the Capitols attention, these things are usually handled by the Peacekeepers; it's only major things, like inciting rebellion within your district that would get the Capitols attention.

Got it.  When I create a character that has a good chance of dying, I try to set it up so that they are connected to things that will allow me to progress some kind of plot or storyline across multiple characters, so that's the idea here.

You're completely allowed to do this, but PM me about it first, because things like rebellions/Rebels/Capital/anything major or spook like, are things that go under plot, and might contrast with what I have planned for this game.  I'm not all 'grrr no plotting for you,' but PM me, and we can work something out.

Ok, well right now I don't have any plans for this plot.  I usually don't.  I have a very emergent way of writing.  I'll set something up with no real ideas about where it will go, but I make sure there's stuff in the initial setup to go on.  I do this so that the GM and other players can jump in and have their own fun with my plot if they like.  I find that creates some really interesting and unpredictable storylines, especially when the GM has their own ideas about where the story should go - they can use what I've done as a kind of resource to build on their own stuff, or just ignore it, however they choose.  This is why I left alot of mysteries in Kenzie's history.  The idea is that what happens to other characters, and what you decide to do with the story, might find some use for those mysteries later on.  I don't really have any plan for it, I'll just build on what ever else happens.

Oh, I get what your saying, but this is basically for everyone.  I don't really care if you all have your own side plots going on, but this game isn't entirely freeform, which is why there's a battle system worked out for this game.  So things like plot and anything to do with the Capitol are determined by me.  So if anyone has ideas concerning plots that could impact with what I'm planning, swing it my way first, and I'll tell you if it's okay or not.  For the most part, this game is pretty cut and dry, it's about a bunch of kids being thrown into the arena where they will fight until only one character is alive.  If we can get through this Hunger Game, than I'll start inserting things that will lead to more rebellious elements, and the Capitol will have a stronger influence in this game.  So the only reason I'm saying no to character subplots with the Capitol, is because they aren't going to be playing a role in the game; with the exception that it might color some of the characters thoughts.

300 some-odd pages beg to differ. Lol

But the real reason I'm not reading it yet is cause the book is always better than the movie. If I read the book first, I'll just be upset when they cut some of the stuff from the movie. I learned my lesson after I read the Harry Potter the Prisoner of Azkaban, then saw the movie. So much was missing.

I'd rather watch it first, then read it.

DRoux

Name: Antony Tueur
Division: District 2
Age: 18
Gender: Male

Height: 6'1"
Weight: 140 lbs.
Eyes: Green
Hair: Black
Skin tone: Fair
Distinguishing Marks: Has a few scars from sparring with sharp blades, most notably a thin scar on the right side of his neck.
Physical Description:
His body is built almost entirely of wiry muscle. His slim build hides a surprising amount of strength, given that he's been training specifically for the Games since his childhood. His parents, knowing that he would most likely face at least a shortage of food during the Games, occasionally deprived him of food for up to three days sometimes in an effort to build his tolerance towards hunger. Agile and built for speed.

Likes: Intelligent people, exploiting others fears to his advantage, psychology, snide commentary, chess.
Dislikes: Wrenches in his plans, not knowing or at least being able to theorize what his enemy is doing.
Fears: Large arachnids, being overpowered in single combat, or worse, being outmatched in intellect.
Personality:
A cold, calculating, and utterly ruthless person. He's willing to go to any length to get what he wants, and out in the Games, he's planning on doing just that. Has a "kill or be killed" mentality. On the flip side, he's charismatic, personable and persuasive, with a knack for using this talent to get inside peoples' heads and for manipulation. His conscience hasn't developed well, and he only feels the occasional pang of remorse, if at all.

History:
A Career, Antony was trained from his early childhood to compete in the Games. Both of his parents are overseers in munitions factories, and as such, had the capital to afford to train him in woodcraft, combat, and psychology. Though he initially resented this early in his life, he came to accept it and even look forward to it as he grew older.

He watched every Game that he could, studying the strategies and general movements of the Tributes, and gradually continued his training. He found his preferred style of combat was in close with knives, preferably from behind with the element of surprise on his side. While he's trained enough to not be a pushover in a straight fight, he's still relatively scrawny compared to some of the Tributes who come from a background with more manual labor. He defeated both of his parents at chess by the age of ten, and defeated two elder Careers in a simulation of the Games at age fifteen. Antony has waited until his last chance to participate in the Games in order to prepare himself to the utmost degree for the competition.

Question! From my take on the film, weapons are a pretty crucial part of the Hunger Games, but the current system as I understand it allows the same sort of damage matrix for all attacks. Someone could score more damage with a closed fist punch than they could swinging with a sword depending on the dice roll. Will there be some sort of bonuses assessed for effective weapon usage? For Instance: Rocks, Sticks, handmade weapons- x2 Blunt weapons- x4 knives and bows- x6 (With some sort of range bonus for bows) Sword- x8 Firearms(?)- x10 (Range?)

Just something that I was mulling over after seeing the film. Well done, I thought. Got a little seasick with the shakey cam from the second row, but I understand that they don't want to show kids getting killed. We'll have no such qualms here I hope.  >:) /evil laugh
I've been in a rut lately, but I'm working on catching up. Sorry for any delay.

undisclosedtoyou

All I can say about the weapons is, maybe, it all depends on if I want to tweak it before the game begins.  As it stands now, the system revolves around imagination, more than 'you get bonuses for this, or that.'  It's completely random to, so say your character is wielding a sword, but the damage is extremely low, than obviously the person being hit would write something like, 'the blade managed to nick, but not pierce my character,' obviously it would be written better.  But if your character attacked with their fist, and the damage inflicted was extremely high, than the person being hit would write something like, 'the opponents fist collided with so and so's face, the sound of so and so's nose being broken ringing in so and so's ears.  Shock from the attack cause so and so to stagger back, tripping over a root, and falling backwards, where so and so's head collides with a rock, causing so and so's vision to blur, and the ringing in their ears to intensify,' you see where I'm coming from?  I want you all to get creative with hurting your characters, allow them to get banged up, bloody, and close to passing the fudge out.  Hopefully said passing out character will do so in a safe-ish area.

Right, I get that, but it just seems kind of... IDK, unlikely. That's all. I understand what you've laid out, but it sort of undermines the big bloodbath at the cornucopia if there's no reason to go after the best weapons or supplies. It's your game obviously, I just wanted to bring this up, because if there's a BIG time fight, it might get kind of difficult to explain why the Tribute with a bow is getting manhandled by the unarmed Tribute after four or six turns. Ya'know? I'm just wondering for the sake of my strategy, it's not my intention at all to undermine your decisions, just a little clarification is all. I have no strong preference which way things go.

Also, if one were in an alliance that was in trouble, could one person roll an "Escape" for all? Or would each member of the alliance have to roll their own escape?
I've been in a rut lately, but I'm working on catching up. Sorry for any delay.

undisclosedtoyou

I think the motivation to go for a weapon is flavor, if you wrote your character out favoring a weapon than why not go for it for that reason alone?  Please do remember though, just because a character has a weapon, doesn't mean he'll inflict a lot of damage.  If he's up against another character with mad grappling skills, or just gets lucky with a rock, than it's completely possible that the armed character can go down, look at David and Goliath for an example.  But I do know what you mean, a weapon would give a character an edge, I'll let you know when something is up regarding a tweaking to the system.

As for rolling an escape for the whole group, I'm going to make a call and say no.  Each person would have to make their own escape rolls.

Mhm, and for the most part it'll stay that way.  But I'm thinking that I'll give bonus points for using Weapons, they wont be high, on a scale of 1-20, but just enough to throw it in.  I'm thinking it'll look like this, a dagger would give you a +1 to add to your roll, a staff +3, a sword +5, a bow +7, but only for long distance, it would have no bonus points for up close combat. That's not set in stone, but you guys get the gist.

[Edit]  I just wanted to clarify that those will not be the actual bonuses, they're just examples.

How about the character gets a +1 to their roll if they are using a weapon (or technique like martial arts) that is referenced in their character background as a specialty?  Otherwise they get the base roll.  This way you keep the original gameplay but characters who can get something extra out of a weapon will go for them, while those who are confident with bare hands can stay out of it.

I think with a system like this it's better to treat it less like a game and more like a collaborative writing project, the way freeform rp's are.  It comes down to whether this is meant to run like a game or more like a story.  Not saying it can't be both, but the system needs to favor one or the other.

That's a good idea, I'll definitely keep it in mind when looking at the system.

I think that falls more into the category of opinion.  To me, roleplaying is both a game, and collaborative writing.  I am not creating a character for this game, because I'm running it, so it'll play out with you guys writing, with more freedom than you'd get with a full on system game, with me keeping the game on track.  You all have the freedom to take the game where you want, but I'll be there to make sure it doesn't completely disregard what I want/have planned.  I just want to make this clear, the battle system that's in place is just to make sure that characters die; which they will do, there's no getting around that in this game, unless your character happens to be the one that survives.  To be honest, it clears it up for me, since I can't be sure that players will kill off their characters unless there is something cut and dry implemented that would ensure it; in this case, when the characters HP hits zero, death.

I could, in all honesty take out the correlation between how much damage is dealt and how it affects a character.  In theory, the points would still tick down, but it wouldn't affect if a character passes out or just get's scraped in a scuffle.

Apologies for my scarcity gang. I recently aquired The Old Republic, Skyrim, and Mass Effect 3 almost all at once.

I'm not entirely sure where the last two weeks of my life went, but I can attest to a powerful sense of blissful content whenever I try to recall the specifics...also...kinda sleepy.

I DID finally see the Hunger Games movie so I think I may want to retool my character's background story a bit. Maybe give him a bit more incentive to actually play to win rather than play in the vague hope of somehow luring in a specific peacekeeper. Also perhaps tone down some of the more "out there" aspects of it. But only some. heh.

That is of course assuming I can resist the call of my Lightsaber...

I was thinking of getting Old Republic and Skyrim once I got a new computer. How would you say Old Republic is compared to a normal MMO?

I tried it on one of the free weekends. The impression I got was that it's still as massive a time-sink as any other MMO, but with a distinct scarcity of the 20 Bear Asses quests that are big focuses in some other MMO's. Some get incorporated as bonus objectives, but they just require kills without collecting items and usually fulfill themselves by the time the main mission is over.

Both have something in common I like. You CAN play through the main quest line solo. Moreso in TOR than COH. But there's plenty of missions that will require group play. Being the type who prefers to solo, I can't say how easy or difficult it is to find groups. There's plenty of Guilds though so I imagine joining one would solve the issue of being able to consistantly get into a group. I'm on the Lord Adraas server, which from my research seems to be one of the more popular roleplay servers. Plenty of Roleplaying groups advertising for new members often and i've found that most people are very quick to answer questions for us noobs on the general chat channel. MOST of the time i've requested a party for a particularly tough mission i've found it without much waiting but there have been a few frustrating exceptions. I'd imagine that's true of msot games.

I've only done PVP once and I generally don't care for PVP but I kind of enjoyed it. It was a weird but amusing "Huttball" game where you're randomly assigned to a team to play a deadly combat game fighting back and forth for control of the ball and then running it across to the other team's goal line, for the amusement of the Hutts who are a neutral party in the Republic/Empire war that both factions need to curry favor with.

The biggest draw of course is that every character class has a unique story line, and all missions are fully voice acted. I imagine this might get tiresome if you're the type to do multiple playthroughs, but right now at least I am loving it.

We'd love to have you.  All the must know info can be found in the Elluiki page, there's a link in the first post for it.  And reading the regular wiki page for the book series is always a plus.  The battle system will be tweaked before the game actually starts, but it wont be changed too much.  I do suggest just glancing through the pages here in this thread, because there have been good questions asked and answered, but it's not too necessary.

Lol, i've read it and it looks cool. just a few question:

In general it looks like all characters start out equal, with 500 hp. So does that mean we don't have individual skills or traits that give advantages and disadvantages?

Where does the sex fit in!?:P.

As the system stands now, there aren't any points going to skills and traits.  The idea was that the system would work mainly to tell a player when their character dies, it's not a full out system.  But enough people have brought it up so who knows what the system will look like when the game starts.

As DF has said, sex is definitely not a big part of this game.  It can happen, but it would definitely put said characters in a precarious position to be attacked.

History:He lost his father at a very young age, when the man tried to escape and was taken by the capitol, neither Merrit nor his mother knows whether he is still alive. Being so small he was picked on growing up and when he came of age to work in the factories he was put in with his mother, sewing and making the peacekeeper uniforms. He has a huge talent for sewing and tends to work so intently that he frequently pricks his fingers and usually needs numerous bandages. He has a secret wish to one day make colorful clothes but in his world this is an impossibility. After years and years of seeing the Hunger Games and witnessing the terrible deaths he grew to resent everything about the world he lived in and felt a huge guilt over making the uniforms day after day. He's never felt that he could do anything about his feelings and when is name was chosen for the games he was almost positive it was his death sentence. He promised his mother he would try his best to survive the games but he held her like it was the last time when is came to say goodbye. One of his largest fears is that he won't be able to let himself kill another person in the games.

GM Notice

Okay, so I'm halfway done rewriting the system for this game.  It's changed quiet a bit, got a tad more difficult, but not too difficult.  If anyone is familiar with CJ. Carella's Witchcraft game, than you'll have a pretty good idea on how this game will be run.  If anyone wants to see what I have right now, and has a GMail account they wouldn't mind sharing(via PM,) than I can add you to the list of people able to view the document(I'm writing it all on googledoc.)

Also, changes are allowed to be made to approved character sheets, just send me the reworked sheet and I'll look it over, if approved I'll edit it into the character sheet already up.

District 5 - 1 Male and 1 Female Tribute spot open.

So the new system is gonna use Unisystem? That's what Withcraft uses.

If so I offer the following suggestion. Rather than Withcraft, pattern this off Buffy/Angel/Army of Darkness. They all use the same modified version of Unisystem called Unisystem Lite/Cinematic Unisystem. Much more streamlined and simplified compared to the clunkier normal version of Unisystem used in Withcraft and other unisystem games.

undisclosedtoyou

We won't have to worry about the unisystem itself since I'm only taking the things I want to use from it out; such as elements of the character sheet, and the bare essentials of other things.  Nobody will need to download the corebook, or worry about reading anything but what I provide for this game.  Unless they want to, of course.

To be honest, I only have the one corebook for Witchcraft, and it's the only system I understand; mainly because they provide a free download of it on DriveThru RPG, and I've played, albeit a small game of it in the past.  I'm really trying not to make this too complicated, since I think more than a few players in this game have no experience with system games, and only really joined this one because the one I had up was easy cheesy.  Also...as this dives deeper into a 'real system' game, my confidence that I'll be able to GM it successfully goes down marginally.

*Deep breath*

So far, I have all the blank character sheets for each district written up, and the number of Character points that will be available.  I'm working on which skills will be available for everyone,  and which bonuses a character would get for being from a certain district.

The dice system will remain a d20 one, and I'm going to try to make it incredibly easy.  This last part is what's giving me the most trouble, because honestly, I don't want to run it like a regular system game, where I have to give everyone the results of each of your rolls.  I want this game to pretty much work self sufficiently, so if I'm gone for a day or two nobody will get held up.

I will throw this out though, if anyone wants to Co-GM with me, and help with the whole system aspect of this game, than I'd welcome a volunteer.

Hmms, let me think on it. I will get back to you in a bit. :)

Latooni Subota

I hope this came out as good as I hoped. And I hope none of my assumptions and leaps of faith are wrong/troublesome for people. Since District 6 is transport, I assumed that it trains pilots/drivers as well as the mechanics that build and repair all the vehicles. Also assuming that District 6 has a slightly better chance at living better for certain people, since rich folk LOVE their fancy vehicles. In terms of skills, Eun Mi is more of an artist and a swimmer than anything else. She'll be able to hold her breath longer than the other contestants, and swim better . . but that's about it. Here's hoping there's a deep river or lake for her in the arena! XD

(Wow, she did come out a little bit sneaky/sociopathic-y than I intended, huh?)

Name: Ha Eun Mi
Division: 6
Age: 18
Gender: Female

Height: 5'0"
Weight: 44kg
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown
Skin tone: Very lightly tanned, clear
Distinguishing Marks: Nothing outstanding/obvious
Physical Description: Eun Mi is a short, but pretty young woman of Korean ancestry. Save for the fairly impressive bust she has, she's a lithe mass of muscle, her body well-formed from years of swimming and working on vehicle parts. She always seems to be calm, kind, and smiling when one sees her, coming off as a very controlled and graceful individual. In the end though, she's just not as strong or fast as the more prepared Tributes. She can probably swim better and hold her breath longer, though.

Likes: The water. ALL of the water. She's also a big fan of tea, and some of the finer things in life. You'd be amazed at the presents you get from people, when you make their expensive little luxury boats and cars just a little prettier than normal.
Dislikes: The heat. Overly emotional outbursts and 'wild' people. Spicy food.
Fears: Eun Mi gets scared like everyone else . . but not by anything specific. She's just better at dealing with it than most, and not panicking out of fright.

Personality: Eun Mi is the calmest condemned girl around. Even when she was younger she was praised for being mature, and calm, while her siblings were childish and wild. Having made peace with the fact that she is being sent to her death, she's just planning on taking advantage of the situation for as long as possible. That's not to say that she doesn't want to win, but she's just being realistic about it. Eun Mi finds herself surprisingly okay with the fact that she's going to possibly kill someone, and is a little worried that this might mean that she has some sociopathic tendancies. She's a good worker, but merely to earn more creature comforts, being a little greedy and indulgant. In the end she might be better suited as an actress, than a construction worker.

History: Eun Mi is the oldest daughter of a family of four siblings, all working in the transportation district, all with wildly different leanings in terms of what they do. Her mother and father are both airship pilots, while her three siblings are leaning towards construction or piloting for all manner of different vehicles. Eun Mi? She likes boats. Mainly because of her love of the ocean.

After a trip to the edge of the district while deciding what she wanted to focus on doing early on, she chose to work at the sea-side docks, to build boats. Her talent at working underwater, and artistic flair, lead to her quickly making a name for herself at personalizing and repairing those expensive boats and liners the rich Citizens do so love. Ever since she was 15 she'd worked hard to impress them, catering to every absurd personal request. You want a mermaid crafted onto the bow of your speedboat, like an old-timey pirate ship? Sure. You and waterproof gold filigree along the bottom, so even when underwater you can see how stupidly rich you are? Not a problem.

The problem came with a bit of jealousy, and some complaints from her contemporaries. She was clearly getting preferential treatment, and it was entirely unfair. Eun Mi just happened to be sneaking around where she shouldn't be, and overheard that at the end of the fiscal year, she'd be moved to another section in order to try and quell the troubles. She'd be damned if she was going to let them keep her away from the ocean, so she made a decision. That year, her family ate very, VERY well . . because Eun Mi dropped her name into the bowl as many extra times as they'd let her.

Needless to say, the other crafters were aghast at this. She was so callous as to just drop her name repeatedly, to get extra supplies that her family didn't even really need? The worst thing of all came on selection day, when Eun Mi wasn't picked as the female Tribute. Irony of ironies, the only daughter of the man that originally accused Eun Mi of preferrential treatment was chosen. Imagine her surprise when Eun Mi patted the girl on the shoulder, and calmly walked up to the dais with a smile on her face.

"I volunteer to be tribute, so my friend can stay safe for another year." Bullshit.

Happy Easter all (if you're into that sort of thing).

Apologies to all whom I play YIM games with, but my account seems to have locked me out. I'll try to fix that as soon as I can.

Sorta wondering at the lack of posts even since I posted my character application . . >.>

I don't think the lack of post has anything whatsoever to do with the posting of your character sheet. Give it some time, and I am certain Undisclosed will get back to you on the approval of your character. :)

There was quite a big lull after I posted my character.  My policy is to be oblivious until someone says something.  I hate second-guessing myself, and don't plan on making a habit of it.

I'm anxious to see what the arena is gonna be.

A series of underground caves and lakes?
A massive old-timey castle?
A bombed-out cityscape?
A forest full of nasty beasties?
A desert of doooom?

Assuming this is still recruiting, I'd like to throw my name into the ring ( :D)...for what it's worth, it was your post in the Gm's Corner that lured me here UTY.

I'll have to root through this thread, but it looks like the men from 1,3,5,6,7,9, and 10 are still available? Dibs on #3 or #5, I think - whichever one a burly mechanic/repair-man type would fit better from.

The caves and castle arenas sound the coolest of those ideas, btw.

I believe District 3 has a male slot available.  I have the female slot there.

Yeah, I'm backing out. This is just a little ridiculous.
