I want to type in umlauts and other symbols

So I'm on a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop computer with English settings.  I wish to know how I can put in letters with an umlaut over them.

And this symbol too: "å"

Any help is appreciated!

This website lists the alt codes required to make alternate characters. Just hold down the alt key and type in the number on your number pad. This does actually require you to turn on NUMLOCK on a laptop and use the number pad keys.
