In 1845, the Scottish inventor Alexander Brodie creates what he deemed an “aether propeller”, which when combined with a large steam engine can theoretically lift a vehicle into the air and out into space. By 1850, he had attempted two voyages to the moon (both ending in failure do to thinning atmosphere), but gained investors from the Honorable East India Company and outfitted a sealed “airship”. In January of 1851, his trip to the moon proved to be a success but the moon turned out to be an airless rock unfit for human habitation, but not without potential, as when he returned to Earth, he reported seeing surface deposits of iron.

The trip however was used to convince his investors that travel to other planets was not only possible, but profitable, and by 1852, two small “aetherships” (renamed at the request of the investors) were being outfitted for a voyage to Mars. This expedition, launched in 1853, was forced to turn back, roughly halfway to their destination. Shoddy boilers, unexpected steering errors and the general mindset of the crews left the ships stranded for several weeks, only to return home to Earth, half starved and nearly mad. They did however report an unknown planet, witnessed appearing around the sun and on the same planetary track as the Earth itself. This twin planet was named Ceto by the captain of the second spaceship and the first to see it, Roger Pullman.

After refitting the aetherships, a third voyage was launched but this time it was headed to Ceto, not Mars. They returned late in the year 1855, baring great news. The planet was reachable, had a breathable atmosphere and was brimming with life. However, by this time, copies of the plans for the Aether Propeller had been stolen and sold to the great powers of the day: France, Russia and German Confederation (the Kingdom Prussia and the Austrian Empire to be exacted), along with some of the lesser powers, Spain, Portugal, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Sweden and even the United States. The race for colonial control of this new territory, and those to be found on other planets, was on. Whoever claimed the most land on Earth and its celestial neighbors, would decide the future of the solar system and its peoples.

However within just a few years of the discovery of new worlds, wars began to ravage the world. The Second Opium War, The Anglo-Persian War, The Sepoy Mutiny (which saw the HIEC from India and would have seen the Company broken, if it wasn’t for it’s investments in the Aether Propeller), The Second Italian War of Independence, The second French intervention in Mexico, The Second Schleswig War, The Austro-Prussian War, The Third Italian War of Independence and most importantly, the American Civil War, at least for technological improvements and a shakeup of nations.

The American Civil War started off much as it did in our own universe, with the additional pressure and resentment caused by a law stated that no new Other Planetary Territory gained by the United States, would allow slavery. The war would see the first clash of Ironclads, the first successful submarine, wide use of field entrenchments, the Gatling guns and the first use of repeating rifles. However, after retreating from Richmond and regrouping at Appomattox Court House, Lee did not surrender but rather was able to use a new super weapon developed by the Confederacy, a clockwork tripod walker, mounted with either Vandenburgh volley guns or a Confederate Revolving Cannon.

These walkers were able to rout the Union army from the field and drive them back, until Grant was able to bring up siege guns and dig in. In the end, these fanciful new weapons, while capable of routing regular infantry, would not win the day, nor would they win the war, as the Confederacy wasn’t able to build enough of them or fast enough. Nor were they the only super weapon coming off the assembly line. Famed naval designer John Ericsson, creator of the USS Monitor, unveiled a Land Ironclad in the spring of 1866, armed with a 30-pounder Parrott Rifle, mounted in a naval carriage in the body and a steam powered gatling gun, in a turret on top.

The Civil War would end in the summer of 1867, after the defeat and surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. The extra two years of war, did allow the Confederate government to invest in nearly a dozen foreign built aetherships though with much of their smuggled gold, allowing many prominent Confederates, their families and the Army of Tennessee, to flee Earth. The Union, which hadn’t invested anything in aetherships, was unable to stop them.

With the war lost and their leaders abandoning them, the Army of Western Louisiana and the remnants of the Confederate Navy broke out and sailed for Cuba, where they had been invited by the Revolutionary Committee of Bayamo and would form the backbone of Cuban independence from Spain, although they would in the end, overthrow the Cubans and establish The Golden Circle Confederacy, which would begin to spread across the Caribbean slowly eating up the smaller, less developed islands.

The Army of the Trans-Mississippi on the other hand, withdrew through Texas and offered their services to Maximilian I of Mexico. Although at first refused but offered land to settle, Maximilian changed his mind, when he lost French support, after American troops began to amass along the border and called up the veteran Confederate soldiers to swell his army and fight the Republican forces of President Benito Juárez. Although the United States did not invade, wary of the Mexican Emperor’s relationship with the Austrian Emperor and the possibility of a new war with France, Great Britain, The North German Confederation and the Austrian Empire, the United States began supplying Mexican Republicans with arms, ammunition and ‘volunteer battalions’. However, the Mexican Empire began receiving support from the Golden Circle, leaving Mexico a chaotic battleground.

The Boshin War, would see French made clockwork tripods face off against British built land ironclads. During the Franco-Prussian War, there was a series of early victories, thanks to the use of the Chassepot rifle and French Clock-Walkers, as the tripods became known. However superior Prussian artillery, thanks to the steel, breech loading Krupp Guns, would see the tripods driven from the field and the use of new, armored heavy infantry by the Germans, would see the Second French Empire thrown down.

The final destination of the Confederate aetherships was discovered in 1873, when Dutch explorers reached the primordial world of Venus. They found massive swamps, dense jungles and a few very deep seas, populated by massive, dinosaur like reptiles, lizardmen and fishmen. They also found several fortified cities and a dozens of smaller towns with still formidable defenses, and the Confederate flag flying high.

With their discovery, Confederate agents, who had been in hiding on Earth, Mars and Ceto, sprang into action, causing trouble wherever they could. Rebellion was fermented in Texas and they began funding invasions in South America by the Golden Circle. They helped fund and arm rebels across Mars, both human and native Martians. They even helped the Fishmen invade Earth and Ceto or at least the oceans of those worlds, although most governments on Earth are doing their best to cover up Fishmen spotted on their shores.

Plot

The Year is now 1890. Theodore Roosevelt was appointed Secretary of the Navy thanks to his support of  Benjamin Harrison in the 1888 presidential election. For the past two years, he's been using his position to advocate attacking the Golden Circle, drawing the respect of Caribbean rebels who attempt to liberate their tropical homes from the Golden Circle. However, a new crisis has arisen that draws many eyes to the Caribbean. Confederate Aetherships have been caught delivering Fishmen to Earth, just like they've done on Ceto. The American public is in a panic, thanks to horror stories about Fishmen from the colonies on Ceto. The government assures the public there's no threat, they caught the Confederates before they could release the Fishmen, but it's not true. There are nests of Fishmen all over the world, specifically in the Caribbean and along the East Coast.

The Fishmen cannot speak any human language and humans can't speak their language but both can write, which is how the Confederates on Venus made alliance with them, first against the Lizardmen and then to send them to harass their enemies on Earth and Ceto. Confederate agents work with the Golden Circle and get the Fishmen to help protect their Caribbean holdings, as well as to find treasures beneath the sea with occasional acts of piracy.

Orders come down to Teddy, in order to keep from scaring the civilians, the government can't send the army to deal with them, so the Navy is going to use small boats, crewed with a handful of sailors and marines, along with "adventurers" to clear them out.

Once the US is safe, at least long enough to open up a new front, a coalition will then be organized and a much larger campaign will be brought against the Golden Circle. Since the Navy controls the Aethership fleet too, to land Marines and adventurers on Ceto, to join the British effort to whip out the Fishmen there, they must secure as best a path for the sea and aether ships as possible. The navy will not commit ships to a foolhardy endeavor until they are sure that they can succeed with as decisive a victory as possible.

If the Earth front can be retaken quickly, then a more united effort against the fishmen on Ceto and the Confederacy on Venus can be more effective.

Characters

Characters can be USN sailors and marines, Secret Service or mercenary Adventurers. Because of how many Confederates fled after the war, Radical Republicans have been in control of the US and thus have opened up many opportunities to minorities, granting them equality, civil rights, and voting rights, along with desegregating the Army and Navy The Adventurers can be (but not limited to), Caribbean and South American rebels looking to gain American support, Mexican Republicans looking to get more direct American support, members of the disbanded Fenian Brotherhood, Cowboys, college athletes, ranchers, miners, and other outdoorsmen, ect

Adventurers may also be soldiers from other nations, sent to aid the US undercover. While other nations may not want to openly fight with the Confederates or the Golden Circle, they don't want infestations of Fishmen, anywhere.

US marines and sailors will be limited to a choice of M1885 Remington–Lee or Winchester Model 1887, along with a Colt M1889 and Model 1861 Naval Cutlass. The Adventurers may be armed with any kind of rifle, shotgun, pistol, as long as it’s pre 1890. Experimental or steam powered weapons are welcome.

This looks amazing. You still game for running it, IrishWolf?

So the idea bubbling in my head: An adventurer who wants to take her pay and use it to purchase a commission on an exploratory aethership. She wants to tour the known solar system and be the first to see things. If her path to do so is killing confederates, then so be it.

IrishWolf

I would love to see this game running, I was hoping for a few people to be interested before I threw up some character sheets.

I like that idea for a character.

Good news! You have two thus far assuming Lustful Bride is still game.

Let's start talking world so this stays at the top. :-)

Boiled down ideas thus far, absolutely not put in a pretty narrative:

NameA has spent her life exploring the world with her father and now wants to expand that familial mandate to the heavens. She dreams of visiting Mars, Jupiter, and she hopes Proxima Centauri. I'm not yet sure if I want to make her father a member of the mission to Venus, the failed Mars mission, or neither.

She's not amazing with weapons, though given her experience in Africa and South America she does have survival experience and some weapons experience. What makes her a valuable asset, however, is her experience studying cultures, both terrestrial and (theoretical from the dutch exploration) Venetian, as well as a functional understanding of Venetian languages as currently understood.

She doesn't believe that all Fishmen on Venus have bowed before the confederates, it's a large world, and hopes to find evidence of differing fishmen culture between what was brought back by the dutch and anything found in the Caribbean and on Ceto. If her theory holds true, it represents a possible avenue for harassing the Confederates on Venus.

So you say humans and fishmen can't speak each other's respective language, but can they understand them? Sort of like people talking to R2D2?

IrishWolf

Yes, Fishmen and humans can't speak each other's languages, their just to physically different to make the right sounds. But yes, given enough exposure, either one might learn to understand the other, kind of like R2D2. But it would be very hit and miss translations, with the best at it, being Confederate agents and the Fishmen in their employ.

I like that your thinking of your character being more understanding towards the Fishmen, in the fact that they might not all be bastards. With that in mind, I rather like the idea of her father having been on the Dutch expedition to Venus.

Virtually everyone of a European background back then was super racist, so even as someone who doesn't see every fishman as basically the same animal, she's probably still going to see herself as naturally superior in some way. Even 'helping' people in other lands involved a great deal of patronizing attitude and ignoring cultural mores. It should make for an interesting character to play.

Have you given thought to a system? I've recently become enamored with the dungeon world system, it could easily be adapted for your world. Just ditch the classes and make your own like expert, adventurer, and soldier, or something. Or ditch classes altogether and just use the basic 2d6 dice rolls for conflict resolution. http://www.dungeonworldsrd.com/

Player: IrishWolf

Group: US Marine

Name: Joseph "French" Nadeau

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Rank: First Sergeant

Sexual Preference: hetero and dominate

Appearance: Joseph is a man of average height, standing no taller then five foot eight, with a good pair of shoulders and work hardened hands, with the knuckles of a boxer. His nose looks straight, although on very close inspection, it may appear that it has been broken more than once and pushed back into place, by a skilled doctor. He has most of his teeth, although he is missing a premolar on the upper right jaw. Small scars cover his hands, arms  and just about everywhere else, most of which don’t even have a story about them, just the evidence of a rambunctious childhood and a rough adult life. There are however, a few good ones, especially the nasty looking slice along his ribs. Fair of skin, he normally sports a tan, unless he was in garrison somewhere up northward, although it has been years. His hair, normally kept cut short, is a light brown color, which match the color of his eyes.

Weapons: M1885 Remington–Lee, with bayonet and a seven inch naval style Bowie knife

Extra Gear: Four extra magazines for his rifle, one hundred loose rounds of .45-70 Government cartridges, canteen, picture of his mother in a locket, the hat badge of a Golden Circle Marine Lieutenant, a few packs of cigarillos, matches, flask and few rolls of bandages.

History: Born in 1862, in Madawaska, Maine, Joseph was  the fifth son of Acadians living long the US side of the Saint John River. His father worked in the mills, until his mother caught typhoid and passed away, near to his tenth birthday. His father, rather destroyed by this, packed up the family and moved them east and south, all the way to York, Maine, where he would in the end, drink himself to death. Joseph spent most of his formative years on the wharves and piers and very nearly enlisted in the Navy, before being convinced that the Marines was a better choice, when he was seventeen. For almost two years, he served as part of the garrison at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, until he was able to get a transfer to a ship contingent with the Latin Squadron.

In barrack or aboard ship, French, as he became known, was a popular soldier, free with his wages to buy the rounds and often made champion for his company or ship, in the semi-legal and somewhat regulated boxing matches. He is also rather well known for getting close to the medical, mostly because he ends up needing someone to fix his nose. How he lost a tooth, well the story changes. Some of his tellings claim he had it knocked out, while facing off with a giant of a British Marine or some other foreign sailor. Other times he claims it was knocked from his jaw, when he was smashed in the face by the rifle butt of a Golden Circle Marine. The truth my never be known.

For the past nine years or so, he's served in South America, fighting for American interests and to protect American citizens, skirmishing against Golden Circle marines, in the quasi-wars, helping "allied" nations, as the United States and the Confederacy creeps closer and closer to open war once again. He's even managed to join a few probing raids in the Caribbean, before he was recalled to join a few effort by the Navy along the East Coast.

She has a few scars upon her body from fighting in the rebellion against the Golden Circle and their Fishmen pawns. The most prominent of the scars she bears is one along the side of her leg where a bullet grazed her. Her hair is black as a crow’s feather and her eyes are a light shade of brown, like that of the rest of her body. Her frame is not very muscular for a woman who fought in a war.

She seems to always have a smile on her face and never seems to get angry, annoyed yes, but never angry.  Her hair is usually shoulder length and she rarely cuts it, just not finding the time to do so in her line of work, but at the very least she is able to keep it clean.

Weapons: Revolver rifle (ball and cap) and a machete.

Extra Gear: Two revolvers (which require those fancy new capsules, or bullets as some call them.)
and her 3 bandoliers for them. Though if she has to be incognito she will remove the bandoliers. Small bits and pieces for her to do maintenance on her weapons, as well as clippers and a bandanna she uses to help hold her hair.

History: Gabby has spoken little about her past. She doesn't care to talk about it and as far as she is concerned it is no one's business but her own. She isn't out to write a history book or reminisce about non existent golden days. She only wants to kill as many fishmen as she can, butcher them, burn their nests until only ash is left. Until the Golden Circle is shattered, the fishmen are dead down to the last guppy, she wont waste time on talking about the past.

HA!

Personally, I would find a character named Dora amusing

Age: 21

Gender: Female

Sexual Preference: Straight (If NC or more), Bi (If not)

Appearance: Callie Dora Cossette is fairskinned with long, vibrant red hair and green eyes. She tends to keep the look of a tomboy about herself, dressed efficiently for a rough life away from civilization. Her body is wirey and athletic, wearing cargo shorts and hardy boots, with a pistol and a bowie strapped her hips.

History: Dora is the English daughter of Analie Cosette from Scotland, and the famed explorer Jamison Cosette who, when his daughter was only 4 years old, earned his fame on the voyage to Venus. Since that amazing venture, Jamison has continued exploring the world, seeing everything from the pyramids of egypt and the lost tribes of the rainforest to the Incan peaks of South America, all with his young daughter at his side. Along the way the young girl picked up several languages including German, French, Japanese, and Swahili.

Dora herself eventually took a break from exploration when her father retired in their native England, and she obtained a degree in Anthropology from the hallowed halls of Oxford University where she made a name for herself for her re-interpretations of Jamison's personal collection of notes and relics from Venus.

It's been a year since graduation for Dora, and fresh from a visit with the Inuit in the arctic is now joining the fight int he Carribean. She hopes her special qualifications with venetian culture will earn her a commission on an exploratory aethership and continue the familial mandate to the heavens, hopefully even Proxima Centauri. She doesn't believe that all Fishmen on Venus have bowed before the Confederates, it's a large world afterall, and hopes to find evidence of differing fishman cultures between what was brought back by the dutch and anything found in the Caribbean. If her theory holds true, it represents a possible avenue for harassing the Confederates on Venus.

Excellent!

I'm off to work here in a few minutes but I will start on an IC thread tomorrow.

We'll stay open for new people, if there are any other interested parties.

ArtemisHighmore

At long last, a steampunk game!
I need to give this some thought.
Initial idea is a gruff, German heavy infantry veteran.

IrishWolf

I like it. Are you thinking a vet who mustered out and is now looking for adventure/a job or a "volunteer" send by the German Empire?

ArtemisHighmore

I think mustered out. He was a young welp in the war, saw some shit and got out but has been down on his luck so to speak. Catches wind of the venture and signs on hoping to possibly make some coin.

Player: ArtemisHighmore

Group: German Veteran, Adventurer

Name: Otto Wolff

Age:37

Gender:Male

Rank: None, Line Infantryman

Sexual Preference: Hetero

Appearance:Tall and muscled with a weathered exterior. Has several streaks of grey running through his hair from the stress of his past. Tends to have a no nonsense style of grey and brown.

Weapons:Pair of Henry Rifle Carbines and a short, double barrel shotgun for when things get intimate.

Extra Gear: Otto always packs like he’s going to war with a backpack of rations, bandages, matches, paper, writing utensils. Carries two bandoliers of ammo for his carbines and shotgun shells on his belt.

History: Otto comes from a small town in Bavaria, one of the German southern states that hadn’t been seeking unification at the state of the Franco-Prussian war. But that wouldn’t kick off until around his sixteenth birthday. His youth was spent working in the fields with his father, learning love for his country and a passion to get a job done right the first time. After the French attack on the southern German states, Otto lied about his age, as did most of the lads from his village, in order to sign up for the army and take the fight to the French.

Otto, being an ox of a lad at the time, was pushed into the Infantry and then into the newly formed Heavy Infantry. Being part of a newly form battalion, and perhaps looked down upon by their northern countrymen, Otto’s troop found themselves in the thick of it at a number of battles, usually facing down the terrifying monstrosities that were the French Clock Walkers. He’d seen more than a few lads turn tail at the sight of them emerging from the smoke of the battlefield like the creatures from fireside stories.

After the war, Otto found himself needing to leave the horrors behind. It had been a costly victory, at least in his eyes, and it wasn’t long before he found himself out of the military and heading west. With little coin or trade, Otto found it tough going in the States, spending hard days doing labor and long nights drinking away the nightmares. He has a few stints in jail under his belt after getting into several fights at the local watering holes.

He’d heard the tales of the Fishmen from space, often laughing it off as nothing more than a spook. That was until he encountered one himself. He’d found himself down in Louisiana, quite drunk and wandering the edge of a bayou when he heard splashing. At first he had figured it was a gator coming up for a nap but the sound seemed off. Deciding to have himself a peek, he stepped through the brush and come face to face with a rather repulsive creature that stood nearly as tall as he did. Despite his drink, his instincts kicked in, yanking the shotgun from his back and delivering both barrels into the chest of the creatures.

Otto has spent the last few months hunting along the southern coast for the creatures, finding them to be quite the delightful distraction. It certainly helps that a lot of the small towns seem more than happy to offer up some money for the killing of them. Having caught wind of the planned expedition to hunt down the creatures in earnest, he happily and perhaps eagerly applied to partake, hoping to possibly find some of the rumored treasure caves of the fishmen.

IrishWolf

Otto looks great, I'll add him to the roster, once I've got more then my phone. Feel free to head on over to the IC and OOC
