The Pirate's Code [OOC]

Arr, mateys!  The good ship Queen Anne's Fancy will soon be settin' sail, so prepare yourselves.  Go ahead and chatter away amongst yourselves here, but remember the Pirate's Code!  Don't give away any secrets.  ;)


About the name: The Queen Anne's Revenge was the ship of the fearsome pirate Blackbeard; and the Fancy was a Spanish privateer under Captain Gibson -- until Henry Every led a successful mutiny and claimed the ship as his own.  Will history repeat itself, and this ship change hands as well?

Learn to talk like a pirate!

• Aft – Towards the stern
• Avast - "Avast Ye!" from the Dutch term for 'hold fast' and means "Stop and pay attention."
• Bilge – The bilge is the compartment at the bottom of the hull of a ship or boat where water collects so that it may be pumped out of the vessel at a later time.
• Black Spot - a death threat among pirates made of a black spot or mark on a scrap of paper; used to vote to remove troublemakers.
• Bow - the front portion of the ship
• Cat o' nine tails – A short nine-tailed whip kept by the bosun's mate to flog sailors. When not in use, the cat was kept in a baize bag, hence the term "cat out of the bag"
• Crow's nest (also Masthead) – Specifically a masthead constructed with sides and sometimes a roof to shelter the lookouts from the weather
• Dance the Hempen Jig - To hang
• Davy Jones's Locker - the imaginary place at the ocean bottom that holds dead sailors and pirates...a reference to death. Davy Jones was said to be an evil spirit lurking at sea, waiting to escort dead sailors or pirates to his place or locker at the bottom of the waters.
  -To be in Davy's Grip: To be close to death, or frightened.
  -To see you to Davy Jones: To threaten to kill some one
  
• Drivelswigger - one who reads about nautical terms too much
• Fore, foreward – Towards the bow
• Gangplank – A movable bridge used in boarding or leaving a ship at a pier
• Hempen Halter- The hangman's noose
• Hogshead- a large barrel or cask holding 63 to 140 gallons, usually referring to alcohol
• Hornswaggle - To cheat or defraud, often of money or belongings
• Jack Tar (or simply Tar) - generic nickname for a sailor
• Jacob's Ladder - the rope ladder used to climb aboard the ship
• Keelhauling – Maritime punishment: to punish by dragging under the keel of a ship
• Kissing the gunner's daughter – bend over the barrel of a gun for lashing with a cane or cat
• Landlubber - 'lubber' was an old English word for a big, slow, clumsy person, a person not very skilled or at ease with ship life
• Mess – An eating place aboard ship
• Monkey - A small cannon
• Powder Monkey - a gunner's assistant
• Port (also Larboard)- left
• Sextant – Navagational instrument used to measure a ship's latitude and longitude
• Shiver me timbers! - akin to "Blow me down!", an expression of shock or disbelief
• Starboard (also Steerboard)- right
• Stern - the rear part of the ship
• Swinging the lead –
    1. Measuring the depth of water beneath a ship using a lead-weighted sounding line. Regarded as a relatively easy job, thus:
    2. Feigning illness etc to avoid a hard job.
  
• Yard – The horizontal spar from which a square sail is suspended

Fun Pirate Fact!  The Jolly Roger, aka the skull and crossbones, wasn't flown by pirate vessels nearly as much as old movies would have you believe; but there's some evidence that it was used.  More terrifying than that, though, was the red flag, sometimes used by pirates or other vessels to indicate that no quarter would be given in battle.

One of the richest pirates ever also had one of the shortest careers.  Black Bart, born John Roberts in Wales in 1682, took to piracy late, at 37, when the merchant ship he served on was captured by pirates.  Given the option to join the pirates, he did so reluctantly, but soon found he had both the skill and the taste for the job.  Voted captain after just six weeks, on the death of the previous captain, he quickly became one of the most feared pirates in the Caribbean, and when he was known to be in the area, other ships would refuse to sail.

He was almost fearless in his escapades, rarely passing up a ship in favour of an easier target, as his contemporaries often did.  One ship alone netted him some 40,000 pounds in gold and jewels, at a time when one could rent a good house in London for just 10 pounds a year, and a carpenter might earn about 39 pounds a year.  Roughly speaking, that one haul was worth, in today's money, approximately 6 million pounds, or $9.8 million U.S. dollars.

But though his fame and skill burned brightly, they also burned briefly.  Just four years after he began his second, daring career, he was killed by grapeshot during a skirmish with the H.M.S. Swallow.  His crew, obeying his last wish, weighted down his body and buried him at sea, so that the captain of the Swallow would not have the pleasure of displaying the infamous Black Bart's corpse.

Sweet!  Interesting facts.  I went to see the Pirates of the Black Flag exhibit in the history museum in my state.  We apparently have the largest collection of artifacts from the Queen Anne's Revenge.  It was quite interesting to visit.

More fun pirate facts:

Blackbeard's name is still well-known today.  After several years of piracy, circa 1715, he was one of the most feared pirates around, his victims often giving up without a fight upon seeing him.  He made himself look fierce -- he dressed often in a crimson coat, with two swords, and two bandoleers filled with knives and pistols.  His bushy dark beard covered much of his face, and reportedly, he would put cannon fuses into his beard and hair and light them just before going into battle.

He was killed in 1718, in North Carolina, in a bloody battle with Royal Navy troops at Ocracoke Inlet.  Blackbeard didn't fall easily -- reportedly, he suffered five wounds from muskets and at least twenty sword cuts before finally giving up the ghost.

Okay.  According to the original rules posted way back when, the game should really be over at this point.  The game was first set up so that a single mutineer couldn't win.  If everyone would like to stick with that, then the game is over and everyone's roles will be revealed.

However, I'm now thinking that rule isn't necessarily required... and in this case, where I believe there's no clear suspect for the third mutineer, it might be interesting to continue playing things out a little longer.

What say you all?  End now, with the pirates victorious, or let the game continue another round or two?

In any case, given enough interest, I will start up another pirate-themed version, most likely, so the Fancy (or some sister ship) will sail again.  :)

My vote would have been to keep it going to see how many people a mutineer could have killed, before being caught. Which is what I would have done in the mobster game if it wasn't for Josie investigating me!
