The conversation over at the Scotland thread on how the Scottish vote hasn't made into the news in various parts of the world made me wonder: what exactly *is* in the news around the world? It might be an interesting thing to check.

So, here's an idea: every few days, let's post what is making the news where we are. Let's see what's considered important in all those different places we live in...

When it comes to Poland, the news over the last week (the one I checked, at least), were mostly about the new government of Poland forming after Donald Tusk had been suddenly awarded with the "President of the EU" role. Poland's new Prime Minister is going to be Ewa Kopacz, the second woman to hold that title. During the last days, there was a lot of speculation in the news regarding the government members Ms. Kopacz was about to choose - and, after the government's unveiling last Friday, the news turned to commenting on her choices.

Also in the news, there was a lot of coverage for FIVB Volleyball Men's Championship, which is taking place in Poland right now. The location explains why it's being covered so intensely... and, of course, our team plays there. Actually, Polish team got to the finals  ;D

In international news, there was talk of the Scottish independence vote. Also, we're getting Ukraine-related news almost daily.

So... that was Polish news last week. What's in the news where you are?

I approve of this topic.

Over here(UK) the overwhelming majority of the news is still discussing the ramifications of the independence vote and further federalisation of the UK, how that will happen, what form it will take, etc etc etc ad nauseum.

In other news, ISIS have another British hostage which is receiving some play.

1) The recent parliamentary elections (only last weekend) and the difficult to embarrassing outcome. Suddenly a far-right, outright xenophobic party is the third largest contender in parliament and they will be very difficult or impossible to avoid implicating involving in some key choices and votes, in one way or another. Nobody wants to strike deals with them and the two major parties that have always been the key in any coalitions really don't want to cooperate too closely either. Everybody knew in advance that a change of government was almost certain, but how to get from A to B now is a completely different thing.

2) Ukraine (from where I live, some parts of Ukraine and Russia are closer than the extreme north of Sweden, and Lithuania is as close as the capital Stockholm. Nobody is expecting any invasion, but it still highlights something long-term vulnerable about our position)

3) Will star actor Mikael Persbrandt get more on-screen time as the bear-man Beorn in the final part of Hobbit? And did he really do some chummy peptalk with the head of a wolf pack at the open-air zoo?  :D

The night of the Scottish vote, the top story on late-night TV was an impending breakup between Honey Boo Boo's parents. I wept for humanity.

I bet the controversial Toronto ex-mayor Rob Ford's cancer diagnosis is big in Canada.

I guess that news will kill the planned musical about him...

:D

Cycle

They are flooding the airwaves here with (1) "news" of the NFL supposedly knowing or not knowing a video tape was or was not disclosed to people who may or may not exist; (2) the hunt for someone who shot a police officer via a sniper type attack; and (3) how much money the U.S. is spending to fight Ebola.

I'll trade you for the Rob Ford musical and Honey Bo Bo's breakup.

The news that just got in: Poland won Volleyball Championship! Wooo!  ;D

Hemingway

Well, looking at both the tabloid and the broadsheet press, the only international story they're all covering is ISIS. There's also a few related stories, concerning some local radical muslims; a fairly significant number of Norwegians have actually traveled to Syria and Iraq to join ISIS and 'related' factions.

Other than that, it's pretty sporadic.

Lilias

On the BBC homepage right now:

a. Syria air strikes
b. Barclay's hit by record £38m fine
c. Second video of UK hostage released
d. Miliband: Give me decade to fix UK

Also, Andy Murray getting butthurt over people not being amused by his Twitter flub, and a paraplegic using a robotic suit to walk to his daughter's wedding. Who said that good news don't make headlines?

More locally, who ya gonna call?

I heard something on national radio where one of the military bases had to close a gate because they found some un-detonated ordinance during construction. I think they said Redstone Arsenal which is the one down in Alabama.

Some stuff about counterstrkes against the Islamic States.
If you're searching the lines for a point, well you've probably missed it; there was never anything there in the first place.

Sweden:
1) Islamic State and how the USA is taking action by bombing

2) Aftermath of our Sweden's 2014 election. The former primeminister's resignation as the head of Moderaterna (Center-Right party) and the question of whom will assume the leadership position. The meteoric rise of a right-wing extermist party, Sverige Demokraterna, gaining 13% and doubling their previous number, and there's also a focus on what role media and various activist groups have done wrong or could've done better to prevent it. Speculation on the new government's budget proposal and the remote possibility of Sverige Demokraterna voting on the Alliansen (Coalition of right-wing parties) proposal to cause a crisis and force a reelection, or if Social Demokraterna and Miljö Partiet (new minoritiy goverment (38%), a social democracy and an enviroment foucused left-wing parties) fails in negotiations with Vänsterpartiet (Further on the socialist left-wing) on said budget proposal.

3) Zlatan's recent results in playing with the french PSG, some of the critic and underlying factors

4) Russian violating Swedish airspace and the following disscusion of what is needed from our defense.

Iniquitous

Tennessee

1. A gunman in a Birmingham, Ala UPS store that killed 2 and himself

2. Ebola

3. Isis

4. The Iraqi war veteran that jumped the White House fence and had a knife, two machetes and 800 rounds of ammunition in his vehicle.

5. Domestic abuse and the NFL

6. A school being evacuated for a small gas leak

7. A woman sexually assaulted in a grocery store parking lot

8. The death of a former Titans football player
Bow to the Queen; I'm the Alpha, the Omega, everything in between.

During these last three days, the top stories here were:

1. Further government shuffling and related comments. For example, today the former Foreign Affairs minister, Sikorski, became the new Marshal of the Sejm, replacing Kopacz, who became Prime Minister (and promptly kicked Sikorski out).

2. Air strikes against ISIS.

3. Media furor caused by the row between boxing champion Dariusz "Tiger" Michalczewski and an owner of a popular brewery, after Michalczewski expressed LGBT-friendly opinions and was lambasted for it by the brewery owner.

The most bizarre news piece I've seen lately is the situation from the Poznań city zoo, where two donkeys have recently been spotted when copulating. This led to protests from a group of mothers and an intervention from a local conservative councilwoman. All in the name of "Animals having sex? We can't let our children see that!!!"... *facepalms*

I am not a consumer of the '24-hour news cycle'; I don't watch it all the time. I get it in small glimpses and portions of phrases, and I prefer sources like RSS feeds and Twitter rather than CNN or whatevs - so what filters to me is sporadic, odd, and maybe not what the typical person in the southwestern US would hear. With that caveat out of the way, the stories I've heard/seen the most about:

Yesterday:
Gunman in Birmingham, AL, killing 3 people including himself
HS students in Colorado staged a walkout to protest their curriculum
Emma Watson spoke to the UN about equality and He For She (that one has been everywhere)
The pilot's strike in France
Bi Pride Day

Today:
ISIS killed a French citizen
DC police will probably be equipped with cameras
India sent a probe to Mars
Married people who love Tinder

In general this week:
Midterm elections
Why we spend so much on foreign aid when so many US citizens are in want
Surge is being sold again

Anyone getting decent coverage of the freaking EBOLA epidemic that's chewing through southern Africa right now?

There were Ebola news here a few weeks ago, but not currently...

Trieste, please explain what Surge and Tinder are :)

BTW. I just heard a very weird news piece: apparently, Britain's Prime Minister said something about Queen Elizabeth purring..???

I haven't seen anything about Ebola since before they brought someone with it back to the US.

Trieste, please explain what Surge and Tinder are :)

Surge is a kind of soda that was popular in the 90s, so it's kind of a nostalgia thing for people. It's going for like $15/can and $50/case on Amazon and Ebay. For soda. *doesn't get it*

Tinder is a dating site that has a smartphone app that people find easy to use. As far as I know, that's it.

Then you'd be surprised to know that he people here in Saudia are paying 30$+ for a classic can of Pepsi. ( The one with the old white background style. )

Nostalgia is a gold mine here. >,>

And here I was thinking you were making a backhand swipe at the 'new surge' (against ISIS, though it's not being billed by that word - and so far doesn't include boots...) vs the old surge in Iraq, against al-Qaeda and those militias a couple of years back. Both of them having been sold, in some sense. >_>

Figure of speech.  He meant she was happy.

It was an overheard remark between him and someone else (Bloomberg?  Too lazy to google) talking about how relieved she was about the result of the Scottish independence vote.  However, the Queen is neutral on political matters - officially at least - and its really bad form to involve her or give her opinion in that way.  So he's in trouble with the palace.

Speaking of troublesome political remarks, we had one of these a few days ago, too. On Friday, our new Prime Minister, Kopacz, officially introduced her cabinet to the media. Various things she said on the occasion were received... not really well.

Next day or so, some journalist recorded an overheard remark by the barely-former Prime Minister, Tusk, who spoke to another politician about how Kopacz was extremely down, devastated even, about how her first speech went. Ouch... It's certainly not a way the new Prime Minister wanted to begin her term: by being outed by political ally as admitting that her first speech sucked.

According to unofficial comments from government circles, Kopacz and Tusk are not on speaking terms this week  ;)
