Usually, when Trump pulls a stunt like this, he's probably trying to make news to cover for something else.

My bet would be the Manafort trial - although the reactions to the Helsinki meeting are another plausible 'thing to distract people from'.

Wanna bet if Iran did attack, he’d expect NATO to comply with the metal defense clause?

My bet is he'd take that line even if Iran made a minor (and conventional arms) attack on Israel - which is *not* a NATO member at all, of course. :) Netanyahu is a much more valued US ally in Trump's eyes than Merkel or Justin Trudeau.

So I’ve just received a fairly comprehensive email through Avaaz, and I thought it was worth reproducing here:

Email
It’s now shockingly clear that Donald Trump is Putin’s poodle. But we need the world to understand why, before it’s too late.

Trump's businesses went bankrupt so many times in the 1990s that many legitimate banks wouldn’t lend to him anymore. So he turned to Russian oligarchs - Putin’s ruling clique - to bankroll his projects, and launder their dirty money for them. This was, and continues to be, a huge part of his business.

"We don’t rely on American banks. We have all thefunding we need out of Russia."
Donald Trump Jr, 2014

This isn’t speculation or hyperbole. There's mountains of evidence. Trump’s former election campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, has deep ties to Russian oligarchs, and is currently in jail awaiting trial on, among other charges, money laundering.

Here are 5 more top facts everyone should know about Trump's long collusion with Russian organised criminals:

1) Trump’s main financial backer for the Trump Tower Toronto was a Russian-Canadian billionaire who got the money by selling a massive steel mill in Ukraine for nearly a billion dollars. $100 million of that money was paid to a Kremlin-backed fixer, likely as a bribe to VERY high Russian officials. The chairman of the bank who financed the deal? Vladimir Putin.

2) Trump bought his home in Palm Beach, Florida for $41 million. A few years later, with no real increase in thevalue -- he sold it for $95 million -- the most expensive home in America at the time! Why? A major Russian oligarch bought it -- we don’t know yet why he effectively ‘gave’ Trump $54 million. But it’s classic money laundering practice.

3) Trump's real estate deals were often fuelled by Russian money, typically passed through shady shell companies. 77% of Trump Soho apartments were bought with cash by such mysterious companies. At least 13 people with links to Russian oligarchs or mobsters lived in Trump properties, including one of Russia's top mobsters. One even ran a high-stakes illegal gambling ring in the apartment right below Trump's.

"Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets"
Donald Trump Jr, 2008

4) Trump’s financial broker and “Senior Advisor” was a Russian convicted felon named Felix Sater, widely known as a mafia figure who once stabbed someone in the face with a broken margarita glass. Sater helped set up shell companies, and arranged funding for Trump’s projects, including plans for Trump Tower Moscow. He’s also part of Putin’s inner circle. Here’s one email he wrote to Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen in November, 2015:

"Michael I arranged for Ivanka to sit in Putins private chair at his desk and office in the Kremlin. I will get Putin on this program and we will get Donald elected. We both know no one else knows how to pull this off without stupidity or greed getting in the way. I know how to play it and we will get this done. Buddy our boy can become President of the USA and we can engineer it. I will get all of Putins team to buy in on this, I will."
New York Times, August 27, 2017

5) Trump’s other main business is casinos -- which are classic money laundering vehicles. One of his casinos was found in violation of federal rules protecting against money laundering no less than 100 times, and paid the largest fine ever levied against a casino for having “willfully violated” anti-money laundering rules. Trump has a legal obligation to do “due diligence” for all his businesses to prevent laundering. His senior executive’s comment on this was “Donald doesn’t do diligence”.

At no point in Trump's presidency so far have I seen so many Americans calling him a traitor on social media, as during the last two weeks and especially after the Putin summit.

I hope it gives some food for thought to those who are up for Congress seats in three months time.

The one comment I have about that email is that Trump has managed to lose money on his casinos.  This is mind-boggling to me, since those things favor the house.

What boggles my mind about it, Is that he still managed to screw a lot of contractors on that job and still go broke

Saw Trump speaking live an hour and a half ago, on CNN, at a military veterans' rally in Kansas City. I think (came in right in the middle of this) - I think he was riffing about how foreign ministers, presidents, diplomats, UN people and journalists were constantly on the phone to him, begging him on his voicemail to contact them for this negotiation or that proposal or this interview, like, /random foreign accent/ "Please, President Trump, call me back so we can talk about zis!", and how he would keep them on the stretcher, not call back until a week or two later, if at all, and say with a condescending voice: "Oh, you wanted to contact me? I'm sorry, I never got that message, but we have now fixed the deal, it's for you to look at and sign your name. Enjoy!". The crowd gave a crashing applause of course, and bursts of laughter.

This has absolutely zero to do with how negotiations like that are conducted in real life - yeah, sure they are fighting to get the last chance to drop a message on Trump's iphone and beg him to call back, there's no other channels, right? - but it fits Trump's self-image like a glove. And also, it expresses the idea of "The State, that's me!" better than anything I've heard from a modern-day western politician.

Somehow, that sounds better in the original French...

Or at least from Karl Urban. Granted, his take on it was a bit more understated, but damn was it good.

Okay let me see if I’m tracking properly..

Less regulation and taxes are a good thing, with less government spending all around is part of the White House goals
-except in the hideously extended detention of all immigrants thru the southern border (I won’t limit it to ‘illegal’ since asylum seekers are doing anything illegal in follow US and International law)
- or potentially spending BILLIONS to support agricultural groups being crippled by punitive tariffs  from folks we are in a new trump created trade war.

Am I the only one hearing government spending increasing because of practices like this?

For reals.  Although I'd love to hear him say 'Je m'en vais, mais l'État demeurera toujours.'  (I am going away, but the State will always remain.)

Very much so, an absolute king. Besides, Versailles (where Louis XIV said those words, I think) is a lot snazzier than the White House. :)

Of course it is, the White House is after all a dump according to Trump. And he lives there so he would know.

Must be why he is trying to escape to Mar-a-Lago all the time, even for hosting official visits...at least he built that one himself.  :P

As it should be. One was built for an absolute monarch to do whatever he wanted, the other where a president went to work for the people (albeit one built with slave labor). Thomas Jefferson called it a "pleasant country house" and thought it was too big. Although he may have just been snarky because the design he submitted anonymously (http://art-now-and-then.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-white-house.html) wasn't the one picked.

In any case, the less our government resembles a monarchy the better.

True, but the odds can't favor the house too much or no one would play. So you make a little bit of money from every customer, but you also need to attract a lot of customers. Attracting a lot of customers means you have a good bit of overhead. And the more people think casinos are a quick money grab the more casinos you have, and the more the customers get spread around. And the less customers a casino has the more problems you have covering your overhead. I don't think Trump was the only one who ran into financial problems with his casinos at the time.

Putin's visit to Washington, which Trump had projected to happen this autumn, has been pushed ahead till sometime next year, the White House says.

Drumroll please, for we have Articles Of Impeachment filed!

Alas... not against President Trump.

Instead the Freedom Caucus has decided it is time for Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein to go.  ??? https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/07/with-absolutely-zero-sense-of-irony-house-republicans-move-to-impeach-rod-rosenstein-who-oversees-the-russia-investigation.html

In other news from Trumplandia, at least one Emoluments lawsuit is making progress in the courts. Probably a long while before we find out how this ends, but it is a start, I'd say.

In Trump being Trump news, more Orwellian phrases from Trump. "What you're seeing and reading isn't what's happening." In which he politicizes more events that were not previously political.

Trump on EU bigshot and legendary political gamemaker, Jean-Claude Juncker, at last night's joint press conference: "He's a very smart man, and a very tough man". :)

It's rare I think to see Trump acknowledging someone else he's making political deals with as (by implication) equally smart and tough as himself. Both Trump and Juncker were speaking about great prospects, I'm not sure about the timescale but anyway let's hope they can avoid an open trade and tariffs war between America and Europe.
