You are being watched. The government has a secret system, a machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror but it sees everything. Violent crimes involving ordinary people. The Government considers these people "irrelevant". We don't. Hunted by the authorities, we work in secret. You'll never find us, but victim or perpetrator, if your number's up... we'll find *you*

This would be a roleplay based on the tv show Person of Interest. I would be starting early in the series, but in another city. It would start, as the show did, with numbers coming up that need to be investigated. The characters from the show would not be showing up in anything more than a cameo, if that. It would be a small group. Familiarity with the show is not required, but would be a big help. For another slant on it, it is somewhat similar to the DC Comics title Birds of Prey in the early days of the title. The story will start in Los Angeles, and likely be mostly based there, but will occasionally go elsewhere.

Roughly speaking the “classes” I would want to start with would be:

Hacker- a truly elite specialist with computers, among the world’s best. This would be the most direct route to the Machine, the group’s source of information.

Soldier- someone with a highly skilled combat background. Some type of military special forces would make the most sense, I would listen to other ideas if they’re compelling and well thought out.

These two are the bare minimum I’d need to start. Others that would be helpful would be:

Cop- with the city police wherever we start. This could be anything from a good cop who gets drawn in or a bad cop who could possibly be blackmailed. There could be more than one of them if two people are interested.

Gangster- It never hurts to have underworld contacts. The gangster would either be the movie stereotyped thug with the heart of gold, or be induced to help by offered reward or large threat.

Medic- They wouldn’t serve as active a roll in the field, but they could be of a lot of use. They could be anything from an EMT to an actual surgeon or any other specialist.

Com Artist- Sometimes Hacking or Hitting aren’t the right approach. Some situations call for the personal touch.

I would consider any other character type that would be of use if someone comes up with an original idea.

My focus would be on action adventure. I have no issue with romance sex scenes creeping in as the characters get to know each other, but that would be among the players, not something I’d set up for. I am very busy and arguably over committed, so I would probably be posting once a week or so for this, but I’d be in it for the long haul. I’d be handling NPC’s, the Machine, and other needed characters as they come up.

The lead hacker (Finch on the show) is going to be Inks, who is also going to be my co-GM. Any other roles, and even another hacker, are open.

Thoughts, comments, questions, interest?

Can we mix soldier and cop?

I'm thinking someone who put a foot into Shaw's and Reece's world and stepped back, got out and went into law enforcement. Maybe a bit of Reece's background with the folks she worked for thinking she's dead.

Caradoc

I don't see any reason why not. I know a lot of ex-military who went into law enforcement. Come up with a background and I'd say you're good to go.

question is how did she go from agent to fugitive.

Caradoc

An excellent question for your background.

Or, they could not be a fugitive and at least start out the Carter/Fusco route and see how things go.

Or they could be something like Reece but stateside rather than foreign based. Burned by their agency or betrayed by someone
in it.

Poking my head in momentarily to offer food for thought -- If you did wanted to mix the two - fugitive/betrayed - you might consider what so many have gone fugitive for: being a whistleblower of some sort for whatever company (maybe private security if you're wanting a soldier-meets-cop type) they once worked for.

Well I was thinking her division was 'outsourced' to decima and she stumbled inadvertently onto something that involved them. She was on the site when it was 'sanitized' and has been 'off book' since. She thinks organized crime has compromised her division somehow at least at first.. or we could do  something along the way like you propose..

Caradoc

Good cop forced out by corruption (which lets face it, LA gets a lot of news for), targeted by someone for doing too good a job, however you want to do it works for me. If you like, write something up and either post it or send it to me and I'll be more than happy to look it over. Since you're the first one respond, aside from my co-conspirator here, you get a lot of freedom in setting up what happened for you.

Very pre. This is about the same time as first season of the show. Consider it the Machine experimenting with trying for more than one team at once.

So most likely she maybe ran into a Relevant case and Control is the one that sanitized the site.

Very much more doable.

Name: Kelly Anne Earp   Aliases: Several.
Sex: Female  Age: 30 Hair: Blond (Varies) Eyes: Blue
Legal Status: Believed KIA.
Skills: Pistol, Close Quarter Combat, Infiltration, Investigation and Impersonation. (Undercover agent)
Associations: USMC, Force Recon (Former), DEA Undercover Unit (Former)

Advantages: Natural Chameleon (can slip into a role easily enough), Connected (She has extensive connections in the California Underground)
Disadvantages: Officially Dead (Killed in Action), Vindictive (Angry with her 'betrayal', looking for the perp that 'killed her')

Background: Kelly Anne Earp was born in a small town outside of Dallas/Fort Worth. She was an amazing actress as a child, her mother and father enjoying her performances at the local school and drama society. Till 9/11 when her mother, died visiting her bosses in New York city when the towers fell, and her world collapsed. Her father, a reserve officer, went active duty and was almost instantly shipped overseas. She grew up following her dad's emails and with a new mission, to be like him an contribute. She added athletic pursuits like cross country and akido to her acting. By the time she graduated high school, she was an excellent actress, best in the county with a pistol and mid-range in martial arts.

By the time she'd finished boot and went into Force Recon, she was the only member of her family still alive, her grandfather dying of a heart attack and her father in an IED blast. She did her time in Iraq, picking up Arabic and investigation skills as the intelligence specialist for her unit. By the time her first tour was up she had been approached by several ..shady groups but she declined to take them up on their offers and returned to the US. She applied to the DEA, the US Marshall service and even the Texas Rangers (the family 'tradition'). She was recruited as an UC (Undercover) by the DEA and was responsible for assisting in the taking down of several small groups that all tied back to a larger arms supplier that she infiltrated.

While in the back country of Utah, she found evidence of a massive arms deal, she was caught in what the wake of an 'accidental detonation' of a massive stockpile of arms that leveled the facility she was in. Officially she was written off, back channel chatter was that someone destroyed their facility before the Federal Government could raid it. What the back channels and she don't know was that she stumbled onto a 'Relevant case' and Control ordered a drone strike and quickly wiped out a massive domestic terrorist threat. She was written off as 'acceptable' losses and gained a place on the DEA memorial wall.

Only she didn't die, waking up in a ravine just outside the search radius after getting hit from the detonation of the arms when an Air-to-Ground missile detonated it. She doesn't recall much but she does have one clear memory. The image of a predator drone against the moon as it launched it's full payload at the facility. A drone only used by the government. So she went into hiding and is doing what she can to figure what happened that night.
(I'm sure it will need tweaks)

Note: when I say she is a good CQB and Pistol type..she's is NOT in Reese's class

Name: Savannah "Savi" Etienne
Alias: Zatanna/Zee
Birthdate: 21 January 1985
Legal Status: Alive. Wanted for Treason, Extortion, Blackmail, Identity Theft, and Threats to National Security
Class: Hacker

Point of Origin: San Fernando, California.
Current Location: East Los Angeles, California.
Family: Alexis Etienne (Adoptive Mother), Paulo Etienne (Adoptive Father), Ariana Etienne (Adoptive sister), Marco Etienne (Adoptive brother)

Born to a mother far from prepared to raise a child, Savannah was abandoned at birth only to be adopted within days by Alexis and Paulo Etienne - Italian immigrants who had, for years following their marriage, struggled to conceive a child of their own. The eldest of three adopted children, Savi struggled through school, whether through boredom or the ability to over-complicate simple lessons based around biology, literature, and mathematics. Her only saving grace was the ability to understand the inner workings of computers at a time when the vast majority of everyday people barely understood them. Growing up, computers became the only thing in Savi's life that truly made any sort of sense to her.

In 1994, just days before her ninth birthday, the only home Savi and her siblings had ever known was destroyed by the Northridge earthquake, leaving the family homeless and forced to move into the first available shelter - a shoddy two bedroom apartment in Culver City, just shy of the worst part of town, not that any of it was really good. It was following the earthquake, when the insurance company meant to cover their once-home denied reimbursements to the Etienne's for damages sustained during the disaster, that Savi began to understand the phrase "Life isn't fair."

Forced to move constantly in attempts to move the family into better neighborhoods, Savi and her siblings found themselves further and further outcasted from peers. Constantly new to one school or another, constantly living in apartments and houses infested with cockroaches, surrounded by gang violence, corrupt cops, disgusting neighbors, or simply falling apart, she learned quickly how to go undetected, to make her life easier. It would be one of many traits she learned from youth that helped her survive.

By seventeen, the only solace Savi had outside of her relationships with her siblings was the growing collection of trashed computers she always had on hand. Working to avoid the ridicule and harassment of cruel teenagers, she locked herself away, got lost in the growing world of the internet, of technology. It was then, as a teenage recluse looking for an escape, that Savi found her way into the underground of the information superhighway.

In a short amount of time, her skills with computers - the simplicity with which she understood them, and her ability to quickly pick up one programming language or another - opened the door to a world where Savi could do more for her family than work meaningless jobs while watching them struggle to merely get by. By the time the tragedy of 9/11 struck the nation, she had established herself as a prodigal hacker, a tech whiz, and a force to be reckoned with when it came to slowly and methodically bankrupting companies that sought to take the lives and livelihood of everyday people.

For a long time, by luck more than anything, she got away with her dealing, ever careful to avoid being blatant in her actions. Unfortunately, 9/11 and the impending war changed things for hackers and tech junkies alike - made doing anything under the radar nearly impossible without almost getting caught. It was then, having gotten caught up in a trade of California government secrets, that Savi had her first run-in with the law. She got off on a technicality, and with the aid of a friend who had all but fried her hard drive with magnets and more, but from then on, her life became a game of cat and mouse with eyes constantly peering over her shoulder. After a three-month stint in jail for trumped up identity theft charges - which she still denies to this day - Savi did the best thing she could do to keep her family safe from constant interrogation and invasion - she left.

From then on, she worked from local hotspots, bounced around from place to place, and survived off what little money she kept from the businesses she destroyed, doing everything in her power to keep moving, keep her head down, and keep doing what she meant to do: helping others.

So still room for a semi-corrupt police detective, then?  Somewhat like Fusco only prettier.   ::)

Yeah, for sheer fun factor, it's hard to beat Lionel.   ;D

I don't think we have a corrupt cop yet, but Doc will have to confirm.

Unfortunately he's got a wonky schedule this week. Be patient and we'll get back to you as soon as possible, sugar!

Oh, no worries.  I'd also be interested in a con artist sort if necessary.  :)

Hey lovelies! As you're thinking up character development, I'd just like to offer a fun fact of sorts since we're trying to coincide this group's start up with when the story begins in the show (specifically Reese/Harold).

By all estimations Reese and Harold meet for the Machine's purposes at the end of 2010 into the start of 2011 and progress from there.
