Intimate Ink

Hello friends!

Welcome to Arcadia, an established group game in the extreme section of the boards. Despite launching in October of 2020, we like to believe that because of the strong storytelling roots that we strive for, the game always feels fresh and new. We have a loyal player base that has collectively created over three thousand exciting full length posts, to setup an awesome game world - with many more being added every single day! We're always looking for fresh faces to join in the schools many activities. As you consider joining, please don't hesitate to let us know by posting here in this thread or by reaching out to either Intimate Ink or Aethyrium via private message. Both Aethyrium and myself, as well as our wonderful player base, work hard to incorporate new characters within our stories; we love new concepts because it means new actors with fresh perspectives in our tales - and new ideas that lead us to exciting new places.

Arcadia utilizes a personalized style of storytelling, wherein Aethyrium and I take your ideas and mold them to the setting, so that we can craft a story that's truly unique to your character for them to experience as the game progresses - where the only real limit on how deep they travel down their personal rabbit hole, is how much you want to focus on that. Once we know your ideas, we can start working on adventures for them. Of course, some of the best adventures that our characters often go aon are ones created and told by the players themselves; we work diligently to support and allow plenty of room for players to explore on their own, and tell the stories they want to experience.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Faeries, come take me out of this dull world,
For I would ride with you upon the wind,
Run on the top of the disheveled tide,
And dance upon the mountains like a flame.

—William Butler Yeats, "The Land of Heart's Desire"

We would educate you. Inform you of your nature, instruct you in the magic that touches all of Creation. We bid you welcome. And so you arrive, nervous or watchful, meek or powerful... at Dublin International. Ending as we began, as all stories are but circles upon the wheel. We bid you welcome... to Arcadia.

And so arrive the nervous and the watchful, the meek and the powerful. In the days leading into Autumn's first gasp, Dublin International sees many arrivals and then more still. From across the world, no matter their appearance or their origins, they come. They seek answers, they seek tutelage. They seek control. They seek Arcadia. It is such a simple thing, to seek. Yet a thing fraught with danger and risk. For those that step between the barriers of hither and thither shall forever be lost betwixt, in mind if not in body. Those Changelings, children stolen by the Fae, are in a way cursed to never feel at home except members of their own kind - the Faerie.

So the question must be asked, do you seek? Do you feel as if your skin is too small for your body, as if there is a weight lodged within your chest and you are frozen in a moment of time, a trapped scream in amber? If you seek for counsel, and training, then come oh ye kin. Find your place through the glamours and mist. We of the courts will teach and guide you, until you are able to once more take your place among us. For yours is a soul entwined with Fae, and ever is that bondage inescapable.

And it is inescapable. You are a Changeling, you are Fae. Perhaps you lost precious little - hours? A day? Perhaps you were with us for longer. Weeks. Months. Years? What is time to our nature, after all. The time may seem as smoke to you, elusive and difficult to grasp. A half-forgotten dream. Perhaps you wish otherwise. Changeling. Fae-Touched. There are names for your kind, for our kind - not all of them pleasant. But the at the heart of it all is one truth that is absolutely - you are different, special. You have powers that others do not, and your soul is as tied to a story as not. Ours are people of legend and myth, whose magic is written in song and ink.

We would educate you. Inform you of your nature. Instruct you in the magic that touches all of creation. We bid you welcome, be your nervous or watchful, meek or powerful... We end as we began, as all stories are but circles upon the wheel. We bid you welcome... To Arcadia.

Hello, and welcome! If that piqued your interest, I'm glad you've stayed around to listen to me ramble. You're probably asking what this game is, and the simple, broadly correct answer is 'Fae Hogwarts'. It's a school for Changelings, people who were stolen away from their parents at some point in their history. This may have been for hours, day, weeks, years... How it impacted you and your family is up to you to decide; when you got 'back', were they even still living in the same place? Changelings come from all over the planet to the school of Arcadia, in order to be taught control of their powers. Each of the Changelings have been stolen by the Fae, imbued with a Faerie soul and Glamour. Though Changelings typically don't have solid memories of their initial time with the Fae, they often do have hazy and enigmatic recollections in their dreams. You are a new student, setting out on this wondrous journey.

So long as Changelings possess Glamour, they are truly part of two worlds. These 'stolen' children are often haunted by vivid dreams, spectral visions and voices, and feelings of alienation. These tend to get progressively worse as the Dreaming calls to them; relief comes when a Fae (most often an agent of the school) imbues them with a touch of their glamour. Upon doing so the Fae soul blossoms, where the child can see themselves and those around them with full Fae eyes. The timing of this varies, though almost always occurs between the sixteenth and twenty-four birthdays. Still, there are the rare exceptions whose visit is delayed by years, even decades. The school insists that each Changeling is awakened at the right and destined moment; those who find themselves alienated for years by their visions, however, sometimes question if they had been forgotten, or worse.

Nevertheless they walk, act, and naturally sense these two realities as if they are one. There is the world of the mundane, the human world that they were first born into. It still gives them a face, a body, a family and home. This is the physical world that we all touch, smell, hear and see.

For the Changelings, however, there is a second world. They see the fantastical bodies of the Fae soul that has been grafted onto them - their seeming. The seeming is an echo of the fae that once was; they are intangible spectral figures, visible only with the gift of fae-sight. They do not think or interact with the world, only stand as a reminder of what the Changeling once was. These Fae souls often have fantastical shapes, brilliant auras, and endless other visual effects. Similarly, with their Fae eyes, Changelings are able to see constructs of glamour that are lost to the mortal world. Though rare in the modern world, these Fae-made structures can look like towering castles, floating clouds that may be perched upon, or displays of skyline-spanning magical lights.

Arcadia itself is hidden by glamour. Where humans see an ageing castle, Changelings are able to pierce the Glamour and see the truth of the building. It's a large structure made of gleaming marble, seemingly defying gravity and physics.

A Brief Selection of the Many Stories So Far...

Our players arrived to a full tour of the school. Each of the characters was a newly arrived Changeling, and each had their own reasons for wanting to learn of the society and magic that was their unique legacy. Soon, they would meet some of the leaders of the school, including Headmistress Katarin and their Professor of magic, Ravienne Paige. Not all the early experiences for our player characters were easy ones, however: for instance, Freya Nightingale would see images of her believed-to-be-dead brother while stepping off of the air plane. Meanwhile, Ryan Eslinger would be faced with an unpleasant choice: he could learn more about his own faerie past, at the cost of human memories that he held dear.  Many of our players took comfort in the maternal grace of the Mother-of-the-Dorms, Sofia Ibarra.

One of the first events of the school season, a competition where characters were to race through a labyrinth under a Harvest Moon, ended in chaos for two of our students: in an attempt to gain an edge in the competition, Alara Byrne would turn to chaos magic, which would accidentally pull herself and Klaude Vogel into a time distortion.  Even as the students were celebrating Juniper Jones' victory in the maze, Barry O'Flahertie was lured into the deep gardens around the school by a mysterious voice.  Despite being one of the most physically resilient  students in the class, he was attacked by a strange being that would come to be known as a Glamourhollow, and would have presumably perished if not for being intercepted by Ravienne Paige.

Following the events of the Harvest Moon Festival, two agents from an up-until-then-unseen larger Changeling society arrived, claiming that they were there to help protect the students. Their initial reception by the students was mixed, perhaps in part because the newcomers revealed that the beloved magic professor, Ravienne Paige, had a dark past and was barely saved from being sent to a prison for Changelings. She was rescued at the last minute by Headmistress Katarin's hand. Two notable clubs formed: First, the famed Ravienne Four, a group of promising students that Professor Ravienne historically used for special projects; the second was a dueling club where students learned to wield their magic like weapons. Meanwhile, students continued having their own adventures, such as Linden Arcangeli who began a friendship with a mysterious stranger in the Arcadian woods, Dusk Phall who found herself transformed as she pursued a relationship with one of Ravienne's former students, and Z who began their transition with the aid of Dorm Mother Sofia.

Sadly, despite increased security at the school, an unforeseen attack on the dorms would happen that would see that the school lost both Sofia and a Fae guardian, Wendell, whom protected the school.  With tension higher than ever, Greyson Delacroix, an investigator who seemed to have a particular strong grudge with the magic professor would form Dagda Clan, a student-led organisation to promote safety.  Among the officers would be Ramonde Hayes, a former homeless street punk that Greyson revealed some of the dark past of the Glamourhollows to.  Clara Foster would struggle to make a good impression on a fellow student she had affection for, while an unexpected wedding of a student to a noble brought up questions of the students' shared faerie past.  Terra Bailey's already notable breaks with reality would exacerbate with lucid nightmares, though she'd find comfort in her writing. Ultimately, little peace would be found as the Dagda Clan discovered a body of a student, only to find evidence that their Professor Ravienne was the murderess behind it.

Now, with Professor Ravienne sentenced once more to imprisonment, and Headmistress Katarin deposed, student anxiously await what an Arcadia under new leadership will look like...

On Glamour...

When creating a character, it is important to realize that Glamour is what connects your Changeling to the character to the world of the Fae. Without it, they lose sight, knowledge, and inspiration of what it means to be Changeling. Most characters begin with three points of glamour, though you may adjust that through character generation choices. Despite it being their lifeblood, Changelings find themselves in a variety of situations where they may have to use glamour: most often, this is because they wish to use magic but do not have the time or ability to perform a Bunk, a special ritual designed to use Fae magic without losing glamour.  Characters, however, may also use glamour to extend their gift of Fae Sight to others, or use it to fuel magical creations if they possess the knowledge of how to do so.

Fortunately, characters may recharge their glamour pools through the creation or destruction of works with unique, artistic value.  Over the course of the game we have created a way for players to represent this by detailing the works that their character creates or encounters, and how they affect them.  Expanded glamour rules can be found here.

Though they may not remember it, the Fae that they once were held a place in faerie society. It is during the time that they are taken away that the soul of a fae was melded with their own being, creating something different than who they were before. The world of the fae tends to be much more visually diverse; some have animal characteristics and others look more human. Some have wings while others look more or less like an elemental construct. Due to this diversity, Changelings are not thought of in terms of races. They are, however, grouped together by Seemings, a term that refers to certain common ground in personality, ideology, and sometimes appearance. The Dreaming is far too chaotic to deal in absolutes, however; Seemings are ultimately determined by mysterious qualities. That is to say, two Changelings with similar appearance may have very different Seemings.

The Tricksters

The Tricksters are those fae associated with questioning social norms, playing pranks (both harmless and harmful,) and challenging what is. They are often acknowledged as light-hearted and sometimes child-like pranksters, yet others speak of those among their ranks whose 'pranks' involve both destruction and acts of social-upheaval. Some fae creates often found among the trickster archetypes include coyotes, kitsune, pookas, demons, and magical clowns.

The Fairest

The Fairest are those fae associated with beauty, seduction, and passive charisma. They can be either wicked queens, distressed squires in need of saving, or tempters. Sirens, fairy tale princes and princesses, incubi, succubi, muses, and seductive plant-oriented creatures are often found among the fairest archetype.

The Sages

The sages are those fae associated with counsel, and fonts of wisdom. They are often considered great minds and advisors. However, they are also regarded as sometimes calloused and traitorous, using their acumen to pull at strings others can't see.  Swamp witches, magic mirrors, court advisors, wizened hags, and manifestations of the undead are often found among the sage archetype.

The Warriors

The warriors are those fae associated with might, protectors to the ideals they hold. They are often considered crucial due to their physical prowess and high level of dedication to a cause. However, they also are often considered narrow-minded and brutish, quick to result to muscle in any situation. Ogres, avenging archangels, minotaurs, and beings of herculean physique are often found among the warrior archetype.

The Wyld

The wyld are the non-conformists and iconoclasts that rarely follow the rules. Their personalities are often described as magnetic, fun to be around, and intense. However, they often are criticized for ignoring rules that are put in place for good reason, and being poor future planners. Anthropomorphic animals, chimeras, and glamour constructions resembling great cavemen and hunters are often found among the wyld archetype.

The Forgers

The forgers the craftsmen and women in the realm of the fae. Their ability to create out of both physical material and glamour is considered unparalleled. However, they are often criticized for their fanaticism, willing to sacrifice their health, themselves, and the resources around them to create their art. Goblins, Gremlins, Kobolds, and boggans are often found among the forgers archetype.

Much like the glamour that comes from being a Changeling allows your character to view Arcadia in its full grandeur, the same ‘faerie eyes’ allow your characters Seeming to be viewed by other Changeling.  The Seeming is a reflection of your character’s faerie self – other Changelings can see past the mortal world, seeing both their human side and the faerie self that is behind them.  Generally speaking, the Seeming will always follow their owner: when they take a step, it takes the same step.  There are those exceptional moments where this is not the case, and only some of them can be explained.

It is said that within the high library of Arcadia, there lies tomes of every spell that mortal or fae alike have ever dreamt of, told in a story, or simply imagined. Perhaps more accurately, it is many volumes that are produced over time, manifestations of glamour themselves. Nonetheless, the art of fae magic is the art of connecting with the pages of these books from far distances, understanding their demands, and unlocking their power.

For this reason, magic is taught and lumped into categories according to these epic volumes.

Bunks

During character generation and over the course of your roleplay in Arcadia, your character will be asked to write bunks.  These are rituals that your character has at their disposal, which by performing them they may cast a spell without the use of glamour.  Each bunk may only be used once per in-game day, making them somewhat precious. Given that losing all glamour means that a character is permanently removed from their Seeming and fae self, characters utilize bunks regularly so not to endanger themselves.  When designing bunks, it is helpful to remember that they are often an expression of your character.  For instance, a dancer's bunks may include reading fan letters, performing various stretches, or even rehearsing a production.  A character preoccupied with mortal magician tricks might favor bunks such as shuffling a deck of cards, performing a rabbit-out-of-the-hat trick, or asking someone to bind their limbs like they are about to make a great escape.  Bunks, like Verses, can be broken into different levels of power.  Extended information upon them can be found here.

Cantrips

During character generation you will also be asked to define several cantrips for your character.  Cantrips were created in order to replicate the small powers that you might see a magical character have in a movie or novel.  Some examples may be a character flipping their hand so a book is turned, transforming their outfit into a different color with a touch, or being able to whistle and have a bluejay fly near.  Bunks should be about enhancing RP with your character, and add flavorful touches to demonstrate their growing powers rather than having great utility or strength.

NAME (Rank #): Please see the recruitment thread for an expanded definition of cantrips. Your starting character may start with a single (Rank 3) cantrip, and one (Rank 1) cantrip.  This should be a role-play ('for color') focused power that has been learned and then adapted. For example a character may have first learned to 1) flip the pages of a book with a wave of their hand, and then 2) called a book within their sight to float to their open hand, provided there are no barriers stopping it.

Fae Description: As with his human shell, Klaude's hair is a warm blonde.  In his fae mien his blonde hair is entertwined with bright blue feathers and softer white plumage.  Though he appears to be wearing a flowing cloak and crown of peacock feathers and plumange at first glance, a more thorough study shows that it is inseperable from his body.  Klaude's eyes as a fae are bright red in color.

Books

Level 1 Books:
Level 2 Books: Mind
Level 3 Books: Labile Voice - Gambling, Oaths, and Fairy Deals

Verses

Level 1 Verse - Labile Voice: He can whisper, and any others that he chooses within eyesight can hear.
Level 1 Verse - Gambling, Oaths, and Fairy Deals: Braking a promise not to cheat on him will yield nightmares of a sickly, decrepit self.
Level 1 Verse - Mind: He knows the professional titles of each person in the room.
Level 2 Verse - Mind: He can compel someone into truly listening to what is being said.
Level 2 Verse - Gambling, Oaths, and Fairy Deals: A mass of warts will cover someone's face for three days if they do not vote in the agreed upon way.
Level 2 Verse - Gambling, Oaths, and Fairy Deals: He can set up a game of skill or chance where the winner may ask a single question of the loser, to which they will silently know the unfettered truth as the loser knows it.
Level 2 Verse - Labile Voice: Though he neither strains nor yells, his voice drowns and dampens the voice of any others around him.
Level 3 Verse - Labile Voice: He can speak upon a subject and lead a crowd to believe that he is an expert, even if he has no knowledge of the topic.

Cantrips

The Wealth of El Dorado (Rank 1): With a touch Klaude can transform accessories or objects that he is using (eg swords, pens, etc.) to ones encrusted in gems and fine metals.  At the moment the magic is not strong enough to be sustained after he ceases wearing or using the item, making any potential for selling or trading the wealth useless.  This can, however, lend the impression of wealth and an air of regalness as he can quickly adorn himsellf with anything from sapphire cuff-links to a jewel-covered crown.
The Emperor's New Clothes (Rank 1): Klaude is able to make basic changes to the nature of fabrics and other clothing material with a touch when they are viewed with fairy eyes.  Burlap can become flowing silk, basic black can become elaborate floral patterns, and an ill-fitting pair of shoes can be adjusted to fit just right
A Bird in Hand (Rank 2): 1) Klaude may open any closed container, and his choice of either a flock of multi-coloured birds or grey doves will fly from it. (2) Klaude may now direct the released birds into forming a symbol or simple word in the sky.

Non-Book Magic

Magical Techniques

1. Where was your character born?  Whom, if anyone, would be considered 'family'? Klaude was born in Wolfsburg, Germany.  Like many in the city, his father (Stefan) was employed within the auto industry; it was a job that afforded the family a markedly upper-class lifestyle.  Klaude is the oldest of three siblings, all of which are boys.  Klaude's mother, Isa, worked as a curator in the 'Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg', a local museum of modern art.
2. At what age was your character abducted by the fae; how long were they gone?  Did their family or life change in any significant way upon their return? Klaude was abducted by the fae when he was seven years old.  He was missing for a total of eight months.  His family had used their considerable wealth to generate a notable media storm in the area about his disappearance and subsequent return.  Klaude was quite fond of the attention upon the return due to having been in a multi-child family where both parents worked.  As attention began to stray from him and life returned to normal, Klaude began making up stories of his abduction, though he remembered nothing.  These stories ultimately implicated a couple his father worked with, though Klaude was unable to keep a consistent story, and so they were soon released.  Humiliated being caught in a lie, and disgruntled that life began to normalize, Klaude developed a rebellious streak.
3. Name one way your character reacted to the stress of feeling different while growing up.  This can be destructive or creative, or considered healthy or unhealthy. Klaude engaged in a bit of a silent rebellion as he reached adolescence.
Though he was never one to overtly misbehave, he often cut classes, experimented with illegal substances, and would be gone for all hours.  He was drawn to social activities, and found enjoyment in both his school's debate club and acting.

4. Changelings are awakened to their power by being infused with glamour for the first time; this is often done by an agent of the school intending to recruit them.  What age did this happen, and how did your character react to the news? Klaude was nineteen when he first was approached by an agent of Arcadia, a professor by the name of Irene Byrne.  After his initial astonishment, he grew to believe that the fact he was truly fae royalty only made sense.  (It was not so much that he was informed he was royalty, but he somewhat has assumed it.  Now he would be quite difficult to convince otherwise.)  He welcomed the opportunity to study in Dublin.
5. Describe some of the ambitions, goals, or hopes your character has as they are schooled by the Fae. Klaude wishes to be an active student, and learn not only about powers, but also the politics and mechanisms that make up the school and the hidden world beyond.  He considers himself a natural leader and wishes to identify flaws in the system and helpfully fix them.  Nonetheless, he is somewhat of a traditionalist and has aspirations to side himself with those that have a similarly classic outlook.
6. Upon awakening some Changelings begin to remember their time in Arcadia when they did not have a human body.  Please briefly describe any memories of this time that your character currently has; or, if they do not have any recollections, please say so. Thus far, Klaude has had less full memories and more simple impressions.  He recalls the scent of smoke tinged with sugared rose petals and tobacco.  He can feel the weight of a heavy chair underneath him, and remembers the sun pouring in through intricate stained-glass windows.  He recalls the patterns of colors those windows made on the floor when the sun poured in.  He remembers feeling powerful.

Connections (To be filled out during game-play / after approval)
Emilio - Klaude's fraternity rival.  He supports him as a brother, however also wishes to be looked at as a leader.
Ryan - A fellow member of the Ravienne four; Klaude is intimidated by Ryan's intellectualism
Barry - A fellow member of the Ravienne four; Klaude finds Barry's mannerisms course, but acknowledges he is good to have around in a fight
Alara - A fellow member of the Ravienne four; Klaude has ambivilant feelings on her due to her involvement in his temporary loss of Seeming, but also her kindness in reading to him
Ray - Klaude resents Ray's bullying of him, but is also secretly drawn to Ray's iconoclast attitudes; they intrigue him.

Will do! I've got the CS mostly figured I think. I was working off the approved + the old recruitment so I'll re-read the new stuff then maybe leave it a lil to get fresh eyes on it tomorrow so I can proof-read a bit then get it sent tomorrow.

Aethy....after a stunning uptalk like that, how can I say no?

Can I still use Gal Gadot as a FC?

This looks like fun! Is there a specific posting schedule, or anything like that? Sorry if you mentioned it in your post, I may have just missed it.

Hi there!  Thanks for your interest!

There is no specific posting schedule. Most of our scenes occur between players and they post in whatever way works for them best. We also almost always have a few scenes going that the GM will post in after a certain number of days no matter how many people have posted; this helps move plot-heavy scenes along so that everyone can stay engaged. We realize that everyone has different schedules and some are able to write more than other; regardless of whether you are a quicker or slower poster you'll likely find a group that matches your speed.

Please let us know if you have any further questions!

It's a new year... For us of course! But the students of Arcadia are chasing the end of the first trimester. Lots of great stuff going on in game.

We're over a year old. We've got 5000 amazing posts to enjoy if that's your thing. Eleven incredible players and two mediocre at best semi-decent GMs (no one says that though, so grain of salt!).

The guilds are active, and the students are slowly finding themselves embroiled in bit of politics. Strange time travelers are still here, and secret missions doing who knows what happening. There's even a sick tree :gasp:! Oh and there's a dark fantasy carnival happening right now you could jump in on.

And who could forget, we're now featuring baby gryphons!

Join the fun, PM myself or Intimate Ink (or both) with questions / for details!

Awesome! Let me know if there's anything you need, or any questions or anything.

I will look through character creation and all the glamour notes.  I am certain something will pop up that I will have to clarify.

Would befuddling a mind, causing confusion and such be Mind?  What if  that ability was created by a drink?

I am basing a character around an Absinthe Fairy.  Like a changeling bartender type.

Glad to hear you are working on a concept!  Befuddling and causing confusion would be appropriate in mind, yes.  Let us know if you have any further questions or need assistance!

I know it fell through last time but I might work on something here again. I was looking forward to joining but got busy then needed to work some things out IRL. Will probably go for something different, though.

This sounds kind of awesome. The Trickster Guild HQ is basically a bar, and there's a fraternity/sorority scene on campus that throws some wicked parties. They'd fit right in! Also hi hi, to people of old and new interest. Totally not staring at all of you wondering what plots I can drag you into. *peers around the wall*

Hallo, everyone~ It's good to see some fresh blood. Oh, wait, I'm not a vampire in this game. :p

That sounds awesome.  I plan on lots of fae drinks.  My go less fairy and more goblin or something inbetween depending on the images I can find.
