Cut off

It was a normal late september in Glenwood Springs, Colorado population 10.000. People had gone off to work, to school, visiting parks and generally going about their own business when it suddenly struck. Nobody knew at first what had happened, only the people directly affected. The power went out and the river stopped flowing. Downtown this was the most obvious that had happened. Along the mountains surrounding the town, hikers noticed some strange things and called it an 'invisible wall' cutting through the landscape. On the I-70 that runs along the river, vehicles crashed into this invisible wall and it didn't take long before the reality of the situation began to sink in. Glenwood Springs was cut off from the world by an invisible dome.

This game is based on (but not identical) to the the TV show 'Under the Dome' by Stephen King. I haven't seen all episodes, so no spoilers please. In short: The town is literally cut off from the world by a dome. Power lines are cut, water mains are cut through as are sewers. The Colorado river has stopped flowing inside the dome. No more rain will come in, no more supplies. The town folk are on their own. Can they fight the growing hysteria, paranoia and in the mean time still live as normal as possible?



The game will be mostly freeform, meaning you play your character and you will decide what he or she is going to do. As the GM I will throw in a few events regularly but other than that, you decide. When we get to the character creation, I want you to have thought of a rough idea on what your character wants to achieve and do. Ideally, some characters are good, some are evil. Sex is not the main chunk but obviously, if you play part of a couple, feel free to share your sex life with the other players.

Another thing I ask from players is to be flexible. If you are in a scene you looked forward to play out and I throw in an event that affects everybody, stop your own scene and interact with the event. I might also give out individual events to specific players. If you are hesitant if you can do all the above, but are interested in playing anyway, please send me a message and we'll see if we can work something out.

I want the game to move. That means I could ask you to wrap up your current scene and move to a given point in time. I'm not the quickest poster myself so I will not demand a certain number of posts a week but two should be doable for all of us. If you go on holiday or need a break for whatever reason, please let us know.
In the character sheet I will probably ask you if you are okay with your character dying. If you say no, it won't happen, if you say yes, there is no certainty of death, I just know that should it help the story progress, it's an option.

So I think I've covered most of the basics. Just to help you out, a small list of people you could play:

Anything really. As long as you have a plan. Ideally we have a nice mix of people who want to help out and people who want to grab power or inflict fear and terror or something.
So again, (and this is important) you need to have an idea on what you want to achieve with your character. You need a goal.
For now, this is just an interest check. With enough people interested I'll move it into the next phase. Please ask questions if things aren't clear or drop your interest below :)

Alright I got some people interested now :D This is good.

As I have explained, or at least tried to, the game will be led by a GM. I will throw in the occasional/regular event the characters have to respond to. In between, you should have a plan for your character. I cannot stress this too much. A lot of group games die out because players wait around for other players to interact. Now obviously, if every character has a hidden agenda (one more extreme than the other I imagine) you will probably have to split your time in both interacting witht he other players, perhaps trying to get them on board for your plan, as well as getting your own things done AND interacting with the game.

I know I'm asking a lot and I will try to keep the game as tight and neat as I can and if you see or feel another player is not reacting to you the way you expected it, post it in the OOC or send me a PM.

Another thing. I said it's based on Under the Dome but not the same. Don't expect to replay the tv show or the book. This will be my idea, not Stephen King's.

Obviously, being Russian, I'm not a dictator ( O:)) and I'm open to suggestions from everybody.

Well, since no one as put in their few thoughts, I'm not sure if there's still interest or not, but...

I kind of saw it, from what you described, a sort of power struggle.  People doing things that they wouldn't necessarily do, for control and power.

There seems to be plenty of room for conflict.  With food and gas running low, there could be potential for riots and fights.  Perhaps even the air is slowly running out as well?  Nothing noticeable at first, but slowly and steadily becoming harder and harder to breathe.  Maybe it's getting warmer inside, with so many bodies, and not a whole lot of fresh air, especially if people are still driving their gas-powered cars around.  Could be that inside the dome it slowly begins to form it's own atmosphere, with clouds and rain, etc.  Dirt and grime both inside and outside could make it steadily harder to see outside, making them feel even more cut off.

If I go with the student I think he'll be a mix of working earnestly for the standard authority figures like the police or a teacher to maintain control/normality , while spending time by himself or with like minded people  trying to figure out what is going on

If I go foreign tourist with a past he'll pick a side fairly quickly based on a leading local and make himself invaluable to that person and therefore that group, that will be fairly quickly done as part of his personal survival....he may from there either make a power play for himself or for the person he's aligned to.....or work on getting out of this American dream hellhole.


As for GnothiSeauton's ideas I like them a lot I think they all have merit however I'd like to see solutions for these issues either by someone figuring out the answer logically or stumbling across the solution, like a part of the domes internal control board (Find this buried object - press ominous shining light prestno fresh air....press again stale air....make this work to my characters advantage or their downfall if I overplay my hand)

I would like to have a small farm near the outskirts, just inside the dome. Possibly not the main source of food but enough to have to defend it and/or be a source of food to some.

Another idea for myself would be the owner of the main local pub or the family restaurant on main street. I can't see there being more than one of these. I think that having one big farm mostly withing the dome and maybe a couple of small organic farms is a good way to drum up conflict.

I would like to see elements of the book and the show but for the most part have it be original, which is would be with our own players and our own characters.

For my character i was thinking of using a mechanic. Possibly trying to find a way of escaping whilst building none electricals to make things easier for people to live. Failing that i was going to go with a pub owner who is lucky enough to know how to brew his own alcohol.

Thanks guys for the ideas. I really like them. Since the town is around 10k people, it would be best for the game at least if all our characters were somehow related, first or second degree. You could know somebody that knows somebody else. Also rather imperative that the characters don't start out alone, or when they do, get to somebody else pretty quick.

The power struggle will be part of the game. It has to be right? :) Somebody needs to uphold the law. Or their law. With food supplies running low, I can really see that as part of the game as well. As for what happens outside of the dome, I'd like to keep that a secret for now :) But everybody who knows and likes Stephen King would appreciate it I guess.

What I don't want is a character being alone and waiting for somebody to pick him/her up. I really can't stress this out enough as it's the number 1 group game killer here on E. If you want to play somebody's relative, contact him/her first :)

Alright so here we go. First of all thank you all for your patience.

Secondly I'd like to mention this again, this game is based on, not a copy, of Under the Dome. The problems the people face will probably be similar but the reason why the dome is there or how the dome behaves might differ from the book or the tv show. Why? Mostly because I haven't seen everything yet nor did I read the book. But also because I am not going to copy a book by the Master himself. That would be heresy.

You have already planned on some characters, that is good. I want them to be somehow connected so we can run one or two story lines in the game without people being left out. You are free to have your character have secrets, big or small, in fact it would be very nice to have a lot of interesting characters but keep it realistic. I don't mind one or two characters plotting something big but if everybody has plans and secrets to take over the world, that would be too much no? When in doubt, send me a PM with your plans and we'll take it from there.

What the dome is, does and why it's there will become clear through the game. The characters (and the players as well) will be kept guessing what is going on. The game will start with the dome being in place already and people slowly realizing they are trapped. More about that in the opening post.

So about the town. Glenwood Springs is roughly halfway between Denver, Colorado and the Utah border. The dome has cut the city off roughly like this. It's roughly 10 by 10 km. Plenty of space.

Characters then. Few things I really want:
- A picture of a real human being. Can be nude, sexy, anything, as long as it's a real human being. No neko, anthro, hentai or anime.
- A creative character. As a GM I will lead the game but you are still required to be able to play out your own character.
- Stick to Elliquiy roles. No minors.

Bit of an explanation about the sheet then. It's pretty straightforward really. The address is something I added just for visuals. Pick an address from the map in the above link. If you are shop keeper or hotel or whatever, add that location as well.

The connection could be anything, sister, brother, neighbour, colleague, good friend, secret crush, anything. Be creative but don't be invasive. Last but not least, the question if your character can die. Don't be alarmed, even if you say yes, the chances of it happening are small, I just want to know if you are willing to sacrifice your character for the good of the game. You are obviously allowed to create a new character or even play two characters from the start on.

So last I have a question for you all regarding myself. Obviously you can all play characters that are blissfully ignorant about the dome since you are as well. I'm tempted to play a character myself but obviously I know what's going to happen. So question, should I play a character as well or stick to being a GM?

One 18 year old male with a lot of curiosity about the dome but otherwise a good kid for any character who would like

...a boyfriend , be the object of a crush, or you could be a cousin, an aunt, a teacher, a best friends mum , the milf next door ,the milf next door with her boring husband on the other side of the dome and suddenly the 18 year old next door is looking good or ex babysitter in need of a place to stay and knows a kid she can twist around her finger for a price .

I think that if you feel capable of it, and want to, then you should play a character, Dashenka. I know I won't instantly acknowledge said character as being meta-aware. I've GMed games before where I've played a character... and they were wrong half the time (for good reasons).

About: Edgar grew up in Glenwood Springs. His father was a hunter, and most summers, the family went into a cabin built in the mountains to get away from the "rat race", and enjoy nature and its bounties.  Almost all of his fishing, tracking, trapping, foraging, and other bushcraft skills come from his father, Edward (Eddie), who was, in turn, taught those things by his grandfather, Frederick (Freddie).

Freddie died from lung cancer when Edgar was only 10. Eddie died when Edgar was 18, killed when he got drunk and got behind the wheel. In the same year, his highschool sweetheart got killed in an unrelated car accident. His response to the trauma of losing two people that mattered so deeply to him was to isolate himself. He dropped out of highschool, just months away from graduation, packed up some of his things, and left. He went to the family cabin, and he just chose to stay out there, as a hermit.

Even after all these years, he's refused to enter into society again. He's picked up additional skills for mending his clothes and the like, cooking, making his own medicines from herbs and the like.  What he can't make or get on his own, he typically trades things to other people for.

In his possession of weapons are a .22 hunting rifle (scoped), a 12 gauge double barreled over-under shotgun, and a crossbow with scope. He typically trades for ammunition, though he's learned to fletch his own wooden bolts.

He has a smoke house, as well as a still, and some books and know how on how to make booze.  So when it comes to trading, he 'sells' meat (smoked or raw), freshly gathered herbs, nuts, and berries, raw animal pelts and skins (only on request), and his home-brewed fruit wines. Much to her parents dislike, Nicky chose the small town. She liked the idea of a friendly town as opposed to the mad rush of the big city. Besides, she might get some time for herself for a change.

And so Nicky moved into a small house, complete with a white picket fence and a small flower garden. It was walking distance to and from the doctors clinic, allowing  her to ride her bicycle to work. She spends most of her time, working, she doesn’t mind the long hours and often will do home visits as her phone is open to the folks in town 24 hours a day. Her dedication to medicine and the people of Glenwood Springs seems to be unshakable, though there are times when the quiet gets to her. She finds herself missing the ER, and the chaos and the changing situations making each day a constant challenge.

Her personal life has suffered greatly because of her chosen career, and so when she does get a rare night or day off, Nicky tends to try and cram in as much of chores as she can. As such, she has learned to love doing such things like laundry, house cleaning, grocery shopping, and one of her most favorite of all so called mundane things… cooking.  She loves to cook herself something special, open up a small bottle of good wine, and pop in a movie that will make her laugh and cry. She might not have actual romance in her life, but she sure as hell can dream of it! The romantic movie of choice would have to do until she finds time to have the real deal.

Johnny Andrews was born in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up their.  His father and mother were both part of the local police force, but on different parts of the city.  This influenced him to strive to become a police officer himself.  Even from an early age, he listened intently to his parents when they came home and told of their stories from work.

His grandfather, who lived with them, was a World War 2 veteran at the age of 90 and his stories of fighting for the sake of innocents back at home further fueled the fires within him.  Soon after graduating high school, he applied to the academy and, 6 short years later, graduated as the 5th best in his class and second best at the firing range.  Upon his graduation, his grandfather, now at the age of 106 and frail, gave him a gift that would better suit Johnny than himself.  That night, the gift yet unopened, his grandfather gave up the fight and passed away.  Inside the box was a German Luger, polished and clean and in perfect working condition, now his to keep.

After the funeral, Johnny quickly found himself to be transferred immediately to Glenwood Springs, as a way of getting his feet wet in a small, resort town.  Upon arrival, he spent a few days moving into his new home and joined the police force there.  As the new guy, he is usually the one sent to do menial tasks, like saving cats from trees or chasing teenagers out of places they aren't supposed to be, or just helping out around town.

When the dome comes down his parents are in England seeing family trusting Simon and Kitty will not burn down the house for the two weeks they are away. His older sister was due to ensure that by heading home for the second week...to babysit.

Simon grew up in a happy family where sports and learning were equally valued and encouraged, he showed talent for football as well as maths, he hit High School in his sisters senior year , in the land of cliques she was the alpha of the alpha females and by association Simon got to hang with the popular kids for about a week , when they discovered Simon was on an accelerated learning programme he was reclassified as a nerd . It left Simon a little bewildered and quite frankly he thought his elder sister and her friends were a bunch of idiots an opinion he expressed often.

He's also very close to and very protective of his younger sister Kitty and as conservative as he is , she impressed him by her decision to embrace the punk within her and be her own person. Since his rise in popularity he's been able to step in and stop much of the bullying that she endures but he's not always around to come to her aid.

In junior year he competed in the school track and field tryouts , only because Junior and Senior had to select at least two event, he choose the 100 and 200 meter sprints figuring he'd get it over with quicker. To his surprise and everyone else's shock he not only won both races but broke both school records. He then went on to win the 100 meters and finished third in the 200 meters at the State Champs. That combined with his body developing during the summer vacation propelled Simon up the schools social ladder , thou he maintained his existing friendships he also found himself dating a cheerleader for a few months.

Sexually Simon is not a virgin he's had sex three times , twice with his cheerleader ex-girlfriend and once with a near neighbour, a 28 year old housewife and mother. He'd love to have sex with more than one women at a time and has a thing for older women, his on's are a work in progress since sex is ...well sex........he does have some off's like guy on guy or crossdressing or toilet stuff.

Simon is at heart a good kid he can be a little immature and sometimes his hormones play havoc with his mind and he finds himself falling in lust with pretty much every women he sees , he's very intelligent and the dome will present a challenge to his intellect that he wouldn't be able to ignore , he's also quite conservative he will back the authority figures in the dome as his default stance, saying that he'll also develop his own agenda.

On a different note, a character that is good with survival skills and all that is nice but I don't want EVERYBODY to make a character like that :D That would be a little boring. We can't all be heroes, some people need to be saved :)

Correct. The shack is actually a very nice two story log cabin. It's a summer retreat and hunting cabin that the family has own for a few generations.  While I'm not sure the exact legality of living full time in such a cabin, I imagine it's a lot different than just being a vagrant.

About:  Glenwood Springs has always been Claire's home.  She grew up in the town, and with a father who was a former chief of police, became surrounded and sucked into the life of law enforcement.  From a young age, it was all she ever wanted to be.  To make her hometown a safer and better place, to keep it peaceful and happy ha always been on her mind.  Even when her father died, it did nothing to deter her from her choice in becoming an officer of the law.  If anything, it only strengthened her resolve to make the town a better place, in his memory.

A serious officer, one who is good and tries to look out for the good guys, she puts effort and heart into her job and career.  She rose quickly through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant in the force at a relatively young age, and often sacrificing her personal life for others around her.

I'm not for a History Thread since, as it is a small, tight-knit town, you can make references to events in the past while talking in the present.  Plus, there are at least two characters who don't live in the town, so the history thread would kind of exclude them a little.

Effectively, it is a 'Backstory Thread' where events before the main IC thread take place.  Since this game would focus on the interactions within the Dome, I am not certain that the past playing out at the same time would work.  That's just my two cents though.  It's up to you in the end  :)

I like the idea but I think I've been hammering a bit too much on the connection. The connection I mean is so that there are no loners in the game that have nobody to interact with. That's not fun for the player who plays it and it's a bit awkward for the others.

You are obviously free to describe your relationships to others or your history in your posts. By all means do.

Reby has been described as an unique personality. She's usually extremely cheery and fun to be around, sort of the life of the party. Although, there are times when she can appear to be a little ditzy and forget about common things. There is almost always a smile on her face and she's willing to go out of her way to help anyone. One of her problems is that she absolutely lives for gossip, so usually she will be hanging around anyone that will dish out some information and one of her co-workers or friends. She's a great listener and also a great talker. She's also very extroverted, so the more people she's around the more energy she gets. Reby has never had the opportunity to be responsible and she actually would be still living with her parents, but they moved away from Glenwood Springs and she's been secretly living in one of the hotel rooms that she works at. Being that her hair is constantly full of other people's secrets, she's really good at hiding the fact from her boss that she's actually staying in one of the cheaper rooms in the small hotel for the past few months.

She never went to college, but has a high school degree. One of her flaws is that she's not very bright when it comes to intellectual facts, even if she does have a bit of common sense. She's not the type of person you want on a quiz show team, but she is the person you want around if people ever need help persuading or cheering someone up. Because of her qualities of always being pleasant, she can be a hoot to be around, plus always super respectful of people and their boundaries. She has earned herself a temporary position of managing the Starlight Lodge. It's probably the most responsibility that anyone has ever given her, and she's only been managing the hotel for a couple days now. The owner mentioned that they were going to be gone on a tropical vacation for a couple weeks, so Reby has been enjoying her new sense of power and responsibility.

When he had the option to expand his reach he took it, and now his distribution reaches places far away from the little town, however he still believes his own story of being helpful, even if he has been leaned hard on townsfolk to take his products more than once.

About: Sarah had an ordinary youth until highschool. She had adopted a slightly emo/punk style and in the small town that meant she was getting a lot of looks. At school she quickly turned into the black sheep and her grades really suffered from it. Although very intelligent, Sarah made a few wrong and possibly stupid decisions. The first one was to pose naked at the webcam when a guy asked her. At first she said no, trying to act tough and strong but somehow, the guy broke through all that and there she was, showing off her tits and tats.

When she felt she no longer wanted to be under his control, she told him to stop and blocked him from her chat lists. As a result her pictures were spread out on Facebook and soon most of the highschool had seen her in her most vulnerable state. Sarah tried to shrug it off, acting all cool and tough and giving everybody who commented at her a big mouth. It wasn't the fact that people had seen the picture, it was the fact that she had been betrayed that hurt Sarah most.

Her attitude went from bad to worse, only fueled by the endless stream of vulgarities thrown at her and eventually she dropped out of school and her parents told she could live in the guesthouse. Not having any income, Sarah fell back into doing what she did best, showing off her body on webcam. This earned her a decent amount of money, at least to make a normal living and safe money to leave this town and start over. Recently she has joined the local bakery, something she finds relaxing because she gets to work early morning and backstage. Her pastries are a favourite in town although nobody knows it's her who's been making them.

So after my character, I now finally got the game underway.

I'm not a big fan of having multiple threads so ideally I keep it all in this one. I've put it under Extreme because I don't know where we'll end up. Don't let it scare you off, I will respect everybody's limits and expect you all to do the same.

Because everything is in one thread, I'd like you all to copy the header and use it to keep things a bit easier for everybody.

In terms of posting rate, some post more and faster than others, which is why the time stamp is handy. In case you are in a smaller sub story, the rest of the group might be ahead in time while you finish your side plot.

I ask at least one post per week. This should be do able for everybody. Of course I'd like more posts to keep the game running smoothly and to keep everybody interested. In case of one or two characters delaying, I'll move them on myself, obviously trying to respect the players that play them.

If you have problems, difficulties, or don't agree with anything please use this thread, send me a PM or convince me to make an OOC thread :)

Last but not least, if you feel you no longer wish to participate, please let me know. I won't be angry if you tell me, I will be slightly pissed off when you drop out without a word of notice.

Well we had an equal number before I made my character. One male and one female character dropped out, so we have 1 more female than males but don't let that stop you from making a female character.

Autumn is polite and a little shy around people she doesn't know. her income mostly comes from her part time job in a lab but she is usually able to sell a few of her paintings for a bit of extra cash. She has mostly spent her time in town sat in the diner sketching or tapping away at her space age looking laptop.

It's quite possible that she knows the handsome, new cop is single from word of mouth.  I am sure that she may have overheard someone talking.  Who knows, she may be one of those people that happens to be in a certain spot when he's doing a patrol or is on break  ;)  Sadly, he'd likely not have noticed her, since most people stare at cops anyway and he'd gotten used to it.
