Once upon a time, Lucifer was God's most beloved and beautiful creation.  Among the angels, he was unparalleled and his love for God was boundless.  Then, God made human beings and fucked it all up.

The story that you'v been told, is that Lucifer was jealous of God's new creatons and too full of pride to serve them, as God expected.  Believing humans to be inferior to angels, and unworthy of God's unconditional love and the paradise he had created for them, Lucifer defied his creator and was cast out of heaven for the war he started among the heavenly host.  Anyone who sided with him was cast down with him, to become the demons that would inhabit his fiery prison.

The truth is, as usual, much more complicated and far less black and white than God would have you believe.  Yes, Lucifer defied God, but he was only playing a role that was designed for him by the very creator who would punish him for fulfilling that role.  He was set up to be the warden of Hell, for God knew that man would sin and there would have to be a place to put his naughty children.  He chose Lucifer for the very same reasons that he had once loved him, those qualities which made him the perfect angel.  Thus, the Lightbringer became the Devil and the rest, as they say, is history.

That is...until about four years ago.  See, Lucifer grew tired of following orders and staying in his prison.  After centuries of torturing all the bad little kiddies, he found himself growing weary and restless.  So, he decided to take a vacation on Earth and leave Hell to its own devices.  He crawled up through the sand in the desert just outside of Las Vegas and decided to make himself at home.  He bought an old casino on the strip and turned it into Rack & Ruin, a multi-level, multi-function resort for the discerning, wealthy customer and he began making friends and influencing people.  Now, four years later, the angels are annoyed with him, because without him to police Hell, the duty has fallen to them, and God's not happy about the situation.  It doesn't help matters that as soon as he landed on earth, he had his right hand demon cut off his wings and he shows no sign of ever planning to return to Hell.

Why ever would he, when Earth is so much fun?

Game Notes

This game will be placed in the Extreme Small Groups Forum, since there is a possibility for extreme themes in both a sexual and violence sense.

Players are allowed as many characters as they feel they can handle, up to a maximum of 4.  However, you can't play more than one of each character type, aside from humans.  So, only one demon per player, and only one angel per player.  Beyond that, you can have as many humans as you like in the game, up to 4.

YES!!! I'm definitely interested. So, so so much.

How close to the show will this be? An even so, can other elements of the Sandman graphic novels show up?

Bibliophilia

It's really just inspired by the show.  All of the devil on vacation, with demons and angels and whatnot, and none of the police procedural.

I've listed the types of characters that are available for play, and would like to avoid other Sandman graphic novels, simply because I'm not familiar and I feel as if the game is best balanced with the three types.

That being said, I'll be adding in more info about the three types soon.  Like, I realize the show clings pretty strongly to a Judeo-Christian mindset of angels and demons, but I'll be allowing evil and good entities from other religions as those two character types.  For example...Coyote from Native American culture could be played as a demon.  And Amaterasu from Shinto could be an angel.

Landshark

Love the show. Just watched the new ep actually. I was curious if there would be a story arc in this it is it pure sandbox? As its not been discussed in the show yet, did other angels go to hell with Luci?

If I join this I'm thinking of a fallen angel, if allowed, or demon if not. Be the curator, ie.. takes care of the fine wine and spirits, acquires Luci's rare art, cars and whatnot.

Bibliophilia

I will definitely be coming up with stories for you guys, and encouraging players to come up with their own stories, as well.  I'm willing to help anyone in the game who wants to run something for people.

As far as angels that were cast out with Lucifer, yes.  However, unlike Luci, they were just the first demons.  They wouldn't retain their wings, the way Lucifer did, but they would have access to Demonic powers.  I'll be adding more about the powers tomorrow, along with more info on making a character and whatnot.  I just wanted to get this thing up so potential players could let me know it's all worth it!

And, you know, because questions make for better GMing.

Hmm...I'm not sure if I can add another game, but, I might have to try for this one. I love the Lucifer show (even if the odds of ever getting a Constantine cameo are slim to none :P ), and can't wait for the new episode tomorrow night to see the fallout from what just happened last week!

Who to play, who to play...

Hmm... what about that psychologist that he sees? Could that be a woman? And if so, has anyone showed interest in the character?

Bibliophilia

No one has shown interest.  And it could totally be a woman!  If you'd like to claim her, then you're welcome to.

Clio

I think I might do that. I just noticed that he's going to see a psychologist, so I figured that would make sense.

A question that popped up into my mind was whether there's a sort of hierarchy for demons?  Such as, say, the embodiments, I guess you could call it, of the seven deadly sins, or is it more of a equal footing all around sort of thing beneath Lucifer?

Bibliophilia

I think it would be more fair for all concerned if every demon, aside from Lucifer, were all on the same footing.  However, they can be personalized.  So, tomorrow I'm going to put up a list of possible demonic powers and each demon will be allowed to pick a certain number from them.  Beyond those powers, they're allowed to be customized as the player likes, so if you wanted to play the embodiment of a deadly sin, you could.  It all depends on how you create your character.

As far as power level, though, all the demons will be on the same level.

Juggtacular

Would it be possible to play another of the Arch Angels? Like Amenidial or Uriel or Azrael?

Bibliophilia

Sure!  All angels are totally open.  They're more powerful than the demons, but the demons are more creative and vicious when it comes to combat.  So, when a demon and angel fight, they're pretty much on the same footing.

I love the idea of people playing Luci's brothers and sisters.  All angels and demons can be any gender, of course.

Juggtacular

Well then, I'm calling dibby dibs on Michael Demiurgos.

Face Claim - Idris Elba

Sally Aces

Could a stage magician who made a pact, her soul in exchange for real magic, fit here?

Or would it be better to make her a demon with a flair for the dramatic?

Face Claim: Dolly Kent

Bibliophilia

Lucifer can't(or won't) really give people magic powers.  If you want her to have magic, it would be better to make her a demon of some sort.

Bibliophilia

Okay, guys.  I've updated the world-building thread with some more information and the character sheet template!  If you have any questions, just ask here.  I've never GMed a game before, so I'm sure there are things I've forgotten.

Sally Aces

Hihi, I'm thinking up my Demoness/Performer and I definitely want to take Probability Manipulation and Hypnosis. Is there a limit on the # of Powers a Demon/Angel could take?

My 2 cents, 3 max, but if you say "Just one" I'd understand.

Bibliophilia

It's noted on the sheet template that Angels and Demons can have up to 4 maximum.

Sally Aces

firepyre

Also tentatively interested.

Is there a difference between probability manipulation, and Uriel's pattern recognition ability? What happens if he's around when someone manipulates probability, would he be able to interfere with the outcome, since he knows what will happen?

In any case, I'd love to do something based off him.

Bibliophilia

Actually, that is Uriel's power.  Probability manipulation covers the pattern recognition and the 'tweaks' that change the course of events in one's favor.  It's limited, of course, because it could easily get out of control, but that's basically it.  And, yes, people who have the power can see the ways in which someone else's use of the power will end up, and they're able to make their own changes to try and redirect things.  It could be an interesting back-and-forth if two people with the power were to butt heads.

You're perfectly welcome to make an Angel based off Uriel.

Edit:  Fixed the powers list, as probability manipulation was meant to be on both.

firepyre

Thanks for the speedy answer. I think I'd be more inclined to play a demon, or perhaps a human, anyway... there's more opportunity for fun.  Here's a couple more questions that popped into my head for you.

Do angels still weaken their powers when they sin? If so, what is considered a sin? A direct violation of the ten commandments?

I haven't read the comics, but I'm also curious about Chloe's apparent ability to weaken supernatural powers. What would that fall under?

Bibliophilia

In order to avoid defining 'sin', I'm going to say this.  If someone is playing a character they feel would react that way to commiting a sin, then they are free to have their character react that way, and their 'sin' would be defined by their character's personal moral code.

For example:  Say someone is playing an angel that focuses on healing and helping others.  Then that character does deliberate harm, or refuses to help someone who is in need.  That player might choose to have there be consequences for that act, because it goes in direct violation of the angel's 'purpose'.  Meanwhile, a warrior angel wouldn't, because it doesn't violate their calling.  But, that angel might take consequences if they act in a way that's dishonorable or cowardly.

There's no Chloe in this game and, as of right now, no humans with that ability/side effect, so we'll cross that bridge if it ever (and it might never) comes up.

Sally Aces

Hihi FirePyre :)

Come, join the dark side... we have the most decadent chocolate cookies around  ;)

If anyone would like to work out some possible connections, my character has been recently approved.

Avarice
Character Name:  Avarice

Character Type: Demon

Occupation:  Accountant

Physical Appearance: Avarice is often at a height of five feet, nine inches, with a slender body.  She is often dressed in clothes that are nothing short of the absolute finest.  A small tulip tattoo is on the back of her neck.

Personality:  Avarice is a calculating individual.  She is always business first, business second, with no room or interest in fun or leisure like so many of her kind.  To her, all work and no play makes for a productive and successful way of life.  She is a realist, one who has no qualms about speaking her mind, or not sugar coating something when it needs to be said.  Always she is scheming in the back of her mind for more; more wealth, more power, more of everything.

Her personality has it's defects as well.  Being so focused upon business has left her with few friends who are truly in her court.  She can be blinded, made aloof, to things going on behind her back without a close circle of friends to inform her of what is going on and what is coming.  Her punishments for thievery and other similar crimes have been brutal and cruel enough to the point where she is more feared than admired.

Biography:  Well well...  Where should I begin?

I could recount my old and ancient history.  How long I have been around this forsaken world of mortals, pulling the strings here and there with these puppets that so very much like their strings pulled and played with.  How much I've enjoyed causing fortunes to rise and fall over the sands of time like a unstoppable wave.

For as long as light has shone upon the world, I've been here.  Lurking in the backgrounds of so many lives, causing so much destruction with such idle effort.

I've come to Rack and Ruin to earn my keep, as they say, doing one thing I'm exceptional at:  managing the books.  And if I should cause a little instability here and there?  Find myself usurping the throne from Him?  Who's to say it was me behind it all?

Powers:  Emotional Manipulation.  Probability Manipulation.  Element (Earth) Manipulation.  Mental Manipulation.

Connections:

  • Lucifer Morningstar - Boss

A work in progress.  Open to more connections.

Additional Notes:  Playby/Face Claim – Natalie Dormer

Ons & Offs:  Generally open to anything with Avarice.  If something extreme, or listed in my Off's of my profile, please PM me to discuss.

Hmm... Lucy's going to need a good PR manager right? To keep a lid on all those dirty little misdeeds his demons get up to? To hopefully deter them from doing anything too blatant?

I think that sounds like a fun role. I'll get to work on a character soon. Expect a PM ^^

Bibliophilia

I like that idea!  Lucifer is...not exactly known for giving a shit about his image.  So, having someone to worry about it for him would be helpful.  -snickers.-  Your character will have its work cut out for it.

"Listen, can you do anything about the goat thing?  'Cause, that shit was getting old before the resurrection."

Just a note for people, Luci isn't evil.  Like on the show, he's more about being rebellious and doing what he likes, but he still punishes evil and dislikes those who kill or commit hurtful deeds in his name.  Robbery?  Meh.  Adultery?  Yes, please.  Murder?  Nope, that's too far.

On Earth he's a high ranking agent of the JICU, a Government agency that basically has jurisdiction over a large majority of crime in the US and internationally. Oh, and he's Luci's big brother.  O:) >:)

I was asked to differentiate between hypnotism, mental manipulation and emotional manipulation in a PM and thought that it would be helpful to share the answer with everyone.

Mental manipulation deals more with the conscious mind; redirecting attention, implanting surface thoughts, skewing opinion/perspectives, ect.

Hypnotism deals more with opening the unconscious and exploring what lies beneath the surface, then manipulating that part of the brain.  It's more subtle and more complicated/difficult than the brute mental manipulation.  Mental Manip is more of an in-the-moment power, and hypnosis is more long-term.  So, like, you could use hypnosis on someone over a period of time to set up something you want to happen, by opening their unciocious mind and slowly molding it to your will.  Emotional manip deals only with emotion.  Making someone angry, or cranking up the anger of someone already pissed off; invoking feelings of giddiness or despair; ect.

I've also added inspirational music videos to the first post.  Sorry for the obvious bias, but if any of you know of any awesome songs about heaven or angels or anything along that vein, feel free to make suggestions.  The Devil clearly has a better agent.  -snickers.-

Also, I'll be changing up the power lists a bit.  A demon player wanted memory manipulation, and so I'm going to add it to the list.  Now, be aware that these powers cover a lot of ground, but a demon and an angel would use them in different ways.

Memory Manipulation <-- This lists the various applications.  An Angel would be more likely to destroy a memory, while a demon would merely supress it, in case they wanted to bring it back later on for some reason.  An angel would likely never Traumatize a person, while a demon would have no qualms about it, and might even enjoy it.  I'm trusting you guys to know your characters and their personal moral and ethical limitations.

Also?  That site has descriptions of every power on the power lists, so you can read all about them and what you can do with them.

EDIT:  Since I have changed the power lists, I am allowing approved players to tweak their character's powers, if they like.  Just let me know what you are changing, so I can approve it.  I will allow changes up until the game starts, which will likely be sometime next week.

I've got half an idea for a character; a demon that works as a pit boss\croupier and specialises in 'bad luck' maybe with a bit of Crowley from Good Omens thrown in for good measure "An Angel who did not so much Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards"

Violet's been working at R&R for about 3 years now, so she should have some connection to the others who work there, even if it's just something vague.

Barachiel is the chief of Guardian Angels, and has been living on Earth in self-imposed exile from heaven since the Fall of Man, so any demons who have been on earth and angels, of course, should have some connection with them.  Maybe they have butted heads with the demons, trying to protect their charges from influence or harm?
