To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,
and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,
and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings.

I have to say - I'm not terribly fond of his writing. -ducks thrown hard-cover copies of The Hobbit-

Why would we throw those?  The Silmarillion is a lot bigger.   ;D

Yes, but we don't need a half page description to describe an empty field :)

Yes, but we don't need a half page description to describe an empty field :)

That requires skill actually. Once tried to describe the Russian tundra which is quite empty as well in 600 words. I got stuck after boring, cold and flat. Unless you count the Very's, with the words.

It's very very very boring and very very very cold and very very very flat.
Out here in the fields, I fight for my meals and I get my back into my living.

I don't need to fight to prove I'm right and I don't need to be forgiven.

HairyHeretic

I know.

But its still half a page about an empty field.

And don't get me started on 4 pages of elvish singing  :P

A Dance in Three Parts - Part I: The Golden Boat

Beyond the sky She looks down and remembers for the first time
How her children grew and how they rode in the Golden Boat
And how it brought them to a vast and empty sea that had but one shore

And the travelers six stood upon the deck and looked out
Upon where they had come and where they had been and where they would go
They retraced the steps of their dance in wonder
They let the music carry them to where they stood
They let the winds guide them to where they would
In stillness all

Vanyion, Lovaian, Shiylla, Raishyni, Q'ariina, Jhealdan
In stillness all
And they remembered for but a moment
A moment that stretched forever in a great circle such as the world does
A moment that stretched forever in a great circle such as our lives do
A moment that stretched forever in a great circle such as memory does
Such as time
And they each remembered

Vanyion remembered the One Tree and how he grew it
Pulling a single golden seed from it's branches
Planting it in the virgin soil
Watering it with his tears and those of his children
Singing songs to it as he sat beside it never leaving
Feeding it stories of hope and love and of the world before and of the world  behind
Promising to father it each time he crossed the empty sea
And each time he returned to the land of eternal spring he would remember

Lovaian remembered the Golden Bell and how he shaped it
Pulling a single golden leaf from the One Tree
Heating it in purest white flame
Reshaping it with his hands and those of his children
Telling tales to it as he worked over it never pausing
Carving it with images of laughter and of the world before and of the world behind
Promising to ring it each time he crossed the empty sea
And each time he returned to the land of eternal spring he would remember

Shiylla remembered the First Song and how she sang it
Ringing a single shimmering peal from the Gold Bell
Washing it in eternal love
Filling it with her spirit and those of her children
Crafting it as she soared it never breathing
Blessing it with sounds of freedom and of the world before and of the world behind
Promising to sing it each time she crossed the empty sea
And each time she returned to the land of eternal spring she would remember

Raishyni remembered the Dance of Love and how she found it
Singing a single silver note of the First Song
Encircling it with her arms
Letting it rule her senses and those of her children
Moving it as she cried it never crying
Tracing it with rites of passage and of the world before and of the world behind
Promising to dance it each time she crossed the empty sea
And each time she returned to the land of eternal spring she would remember

Q'ariina remembered the First Child and how she birthed him
Taking a single step in the Dance of Love
Naming him in endless hope
Suckling him with her strength and that of her children
Holding him as she released it never regretting
Guarding him with  eyes of joy  and of the world before and of the world behind
Promising to birth him each time she crossed the  empty sea
And each time she returned to the land of eternal spring she would remember

Jhealdan remembered the Spear of Light and how he forged it
Taking a drop of blood from  the First Child
Steeping it in boiling passions
Forging it in his spirit fire of those of his children
Hefting it as he praised it never hating
Whispering words to it of the hunt and of the world before and of the world behind
Promising to honor it each time he crossed the empty sea
And each time he returned to the land of eternal spring he would remember

Beyond the sky She looks down and remembers for the second time
How her children grew and how they rode in the Golden Boat
And how it brought them to a vast and empty sea that had but one shore

A Dance in Three Parts - Part II: The Sweeping Stars

We crossed the ocean and
As unborn children sometimes do
We hungered as we watched the schools of fish as they swam
Above us amidst the stars
And below us amidst pale reflections of the stars
And it reminded us that we were like those reflections
That should the gods eyes close in sleep we would sleep also
Until we were remade in their waking
And should they close in death we would cease to be
For all time

We crossed the ocean and
As unborn children sometimes do
We wept as we were pulled into the new world
And about us the earth
And within us the true reflection of earth
And it instructed us of how to live as children
That in song and dance we would thrive and the earth would wait
Until we rejoined it in endless sleep
And It would hold our spirit and wait
For all time

We crossed the ocean and
As unborn children sometimes do
We Looked about us in wonder at the sweeping stars
Above us the lights of heaven
And within us those lights made sounds
And they filled us with music and laughter
As they reassured us that we and those we bore would grow
Until the shadows fell over the starry sky
When we would return home across the sea
For all time

A Dance in Three Parts - Part III: The Morning of Light

We danced when first shone the light
Touching gently the eternal night
Bringing blessed morning to our sight
And spanning the bridges that were our inheritance

Vanyion, Lovaian, Shiylla, Raishyni,  Q'ariina, Jhealdan
To the Lady of the Mist they touched their fingers upon the land
To the Father of the Eagle they raised their eyes towards the sky
To the child of the gods they let flow their tears wrapped in song
And to the Mother of all they left their gifts with thanks and blessings

Vanyion planted the One Tree and spoke
Timara tavalac sethi aun du
I shall honor and revere all life
And he lay down as if to sleep

Lovaian rang the Golden Bell and spoke
Belta mira moan aun du
I shall never forget this moment
And he lay down as if to sleep

Shiylla sang the First Song and spoke
Triessa Quellna audro aun du
I shall teach the children
And she lay down as if to sleep

Raishyni danced the Dance of Love and spoke
Jevah sonah hala aun du
I shall always remember love
And she lay down as if to sleep

Q'ariina gave birth to the First Child and spoke
Reysa minath avulai aun du
I shall treasure this love
And she lay down as if to sleep

Jhealdan cast forth the spear of light
Sekatha feris wehlvan aun du
I shall live and die in harmony
And he lay down as if to sleep

And the Mother of all laid her hands upon each one of them in turn and spoke
To you my children I give this promise
Never to be broken, Never to be forgotten
Dhelavan  mira weq'allah sithi chelva aun du
I shall watch over your children and grant them life eternal
Marji auryla triassa saan
And welcome them with open arms
Fera habhelden charynii ielda
When they return to my heart

And so the promise was forged
Never to be broken
Never to be forgotten
Never to be unmade
you were never able to keep me breathing as the water rises up again

I am a fan, but I have to agree with HH.  The lengthy descriptions were a little hard to get through sometimes.
