'Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.'~Arthur C. Clarke

"Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light."~Dylan Thomas.

“What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it's the size of the fight in the dog.” ~Dwight D. Eisenhower.

'I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world.'~ Ronald Reagan.

“There is a war going on and you are part of it. Alien invaders are entering our skies with sinister intent and it is the job of the United States Air Force to protect this nation and its people. In the skies over New Mexico, California, Texas and by God even Washington DC, you chase down and destroy the alien flying saucers. Yes, their technology is superior to ours and their craft utilise unknown engines of some type - yet our fighters, flown by the best of the best, can match their vectors and make an intercept should the situation fall in our favour.

This is a secret war. Sure, there are folks all over America calling into the news stations with reports of flying saucers and UFOs, but we have experts ready to explain away their sightings as weather balloons or atmospheric phenomenon. All those who need to know about the alien invasion already know, and we must keep it that way. Your knowledge of the invaders is precious, few have seen a saucer, fewer still have been head-to-head in a dog-fight with one and so from time to time the Air Force will call on you to investigate sightings, landings and encounters. The Joint Chiefs believe that the invaders have landed agents amongst the population, saboteurs and Fifth Columnists who are even now attacking the soft under-belly of our nation. You men, you pilots of the 93rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, are the perfect weapon against these saboteurs. In the air and on the ground, your president expects you to meet and defeat these alien invaders ... before they annihilate us and our American Way of Life. Good Luck.”

RICHARD M. NIXON

-Vice President of the United States of America, Feb 6, 1953

On November 23, 1953, Lieutenant Felix Moncla and radar officer Lieutenant R.R. Wilson took off from Kinross Air Force Base to chase a UFO spotted over Lake Superior by Air Defence Command radar operators. The F-89C jet was guided towards the object from the ground, and controllers saw the plane close in on the UFO blip. Then, 160 miles from the base, at 8,000 feet and 73 miles off Keeweenaw Point, Michigan, the two blips merged and faded from the screen. The jet and its occupants were never seen again.

This encounter was not the first, or last, time the armed forces of a nation on Earth would deal with a threat from beyond our solar system. It is just one that became noticed by the public. In an age where civilian commercial aviation has become more ubiquitous, and news can spread faster than ever before, it is inevitable that some events will slip through the net.

The truth of the matter is that we knew this was coming, but we were lazy. We had several years to get ready. We saw the signs, we had countless near collisions, and unexplained abductions. We have no excuse for not being ready.

Ever since the infamous Operation Highjump, we knew that there was life beyond our planet. This life made first contact with the Third Reich, offering up the table scraps of its technology to the fools in exchange for...well no one knows what they got in exchange. But as part of the deals that were made, the Nazis were offered sanctuary in the Antarctic if the Allies proved to be successful in their war effort.

When Highjump was conducted to stamp out the remaining embers of the fascist Reich, the attackers were faced with Nazi made hovercraft, with technology that had them flying circles around our own planes and bringing them down with a mix of gunfire and energy beams.

These were the last of the Nazi Wonder Weapons that were meant to turn the entire tide of the war. But in the fighting they were still brought down. Nearby ships fired everything they had up into the air, and the experienced pilots that had taken part in the mission gave it everything they had. It was costly, but the last Nazi weapons were destroyed.

Just as allied forces were beginning to land ground troops near the facility, the entire thing went up in flames. Detonations were so strong planes in the air reported turbulence. Only for the smoke to suddenly clear up as large silver discs cut through the black smoke, and soared high up into the sky, disappearing into the great beyond.

No one wanted to talk about it, and the operation was covered up, with deaths reported as accidents which occurred in other places, or as having occurred before the end of the war. Many hoped that it was a one time thing, and those strange ships would never again come to bother us. Just another of the many strange and unexplained projects by those crazy krauts.

This naïve hope wasn't to last.

Sightings continued to happen. Foo Fighters. Cigar Shapes. Flying Discs. From these things following bombers, to near collisions with commercial flights, and even reported landings. The government didn't want to accept the idea of life from another world coming to see us. We didn't know what they wanted, what they planned to do to us. We didn't even know if we could do anything to really threaten them or chase them away. No one likes feeling powerless, so we couldn't really be blamed for burying our heads in the sand, and begging the danger to just go away.

We received our next warning of the threat at Roswell New Mexico.

People think they know what happened there, and at the base...they have no fucking clue.

We got a very valuable kick in the ass.

We could no longer ignore the danger. Because it wasn't ignoring us. Something (maybe even multiple somethings) are coming for us. Whether or not we will be ready for this terror from beyond the stars is something few are brave enough to think about. Majestic 12 and Project Blueblook are both working to uncover everything they can about the aliens.

What little information has trickled out is disconcerting. We aren't dealing with just one invader, but multiple. Just as the Cold War has many more players than just the US and USSR, so too does this new war have multiple factions at play, yet most are very happy to work in the shadows. But some take a more active hand in events.

Not every UFO crash is an accident, nor is every shot down ship shot down by us. But we are always there to pick up the pieces, try to cover things up, and see what we can learn to better ourselves.

However, with the recent show of force in Washington DC, with ships hovering right over our most sensitive installations, it was decided that a dedicated response force was needed. It was high time these things were shown that Earth wasn't their playground.

PROJECT POUNCE

“If it flies it dies”
~Air Defence Command saying

After the flying saucer over flights of Washington in the summer of 1952 the US Air Force began to treat reports of flying saucers seriously and intercept any that appeared on its radar scopes. Colonel William A. Matheny, commander of the 34th Air Defence Division, was the architect of the plan to actually photograph and then shoot down invading flying saucers.

He called the program ‘Project Pounce’. Matheny was firmly convinced that the UFO’s were real and that they were interplanetary space ships. His top secret defence plan called for a special squadron of stripped down F-94C’s that would be on stand-by to chase the UFO’s. The plan went through Central Air Defence Headquarters and even up to Air Defence Command Headquarters, and was rejected because of the non-availability of the aircraft.

In secret, several bases have been chosen to provide the best response times for Project Pounce. Staff members are chosen for a variety of reasons, with strange testing methods seeming to be used to detect things few have considered. Those who are brought into Project Pounce have been tested to be immune to certain kinds of infections from alien pathogens, a moral fiber that prevents them from being bribed by foreign powers, or even a resistance to alien mind control. This has led to Project Pounce even allowing women and others not normally considered for major operations to be part of the mission.

Old files for the Women Air Service Pilots have been opened up again, and used to establish a baseline for new female members of the project. Current tests and research say that women make better pilots than men. They are better passive killers, can handle the intensity of G-forces better than men, and are able to resist some of the types of Psionic attacks the invaders use (The eggheads think it has to do with the wiring being different and women being less able to receive Psionic commands).

The 93rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron will have do anything and everything it can to defeat the enemy and secure the safety of the United States of America, and the planet Earth.

Not everyone is open to some of the choices being made by the project, allowing women to do the same jobs as men, bringing in minorities to take positions equal to others, and even allowing those who would normally be considered subversives to find a place among the staff members of the project.

There are even tales about some of the 'visitors' being allowed to establish a presence upon the Earth if they will aid us in dealing with the troublemakers. Already construction is nearly complete at Area 51. At Mariposa, and even Raven Rock. Places have been built to allow them to live and rest on our planet without needing to return to their ships, all in the name of mutual cooperation and joint survival.

There is a war on, the truth is out there, and all we can do now is just watch the skies.

So yet another random crazy inspiration from me. I read through Attack Squadron: Roswell and just felt randomly inspired.

It makes use of the same system as Traveller by Mongoose Publishing. I don't have many Traveller books but I can share PDFs of what I do have. Same as with ASR.

I'm not entirely sure what to do with this, or even if it could work here on E. But at the very least I hope that you had fun reading the random musings and wild flights of fancy that have been bouncing around my head for a day or so now :P
