This is an idea I have an interest in setting up at some point in the future (likely a week or two at the least) when I have more time on my hands, though, for now, it remains an interest check to see if I should devote any of my free time to expanding it further.  Likewise, I'd be interested in hearing the thoughts of anyone interested.  If it goes ahead, I'll quite likely use the D&D 5e system to play it by, though I'm not completely ruling out freeform play.

For this idea, I'm looking to do something based on a small squad spies, saboteurs, and assassins that are also family members who's former clan has a long tradition of inbreeding to maintain the purity of the Galifar bloodline that they carry, whilst utilizing stolen magebreeding methods to negate the drawbacks.  Whilst the Last War maybe over for the nations of Khorvaire, its shadows are now hunting them to extinction.  Non-sexually, the main themes are espionage, intrigue, and survival, all with a generous pinch of swashbuckling adventure.  A working knowledge of the setting would be neat, though not necessary on the part of the players.

Seeking: I'll probably be looking for players for the parts of a mother, a daughter, and 2 sons (of which I'd be playing one), of which I'm more or less expecting a group of humans (with maybe an extra feature to account for the magebreeding).  I'm seeing this as an equal-partners, equal-opportunities sort of thing when it comes to the relationship dynamic between the four.  In addition, they be a professional group that knows they need to rely on each other - indeed, it's been their conditioning and the modus operandi of the clan for generations.  In addition to threesomes (or moresomes), I also have an interest breeding/impreg for rebuilding the clan over the course of the story.  Most smut it likely to take place between the PCs themselves, as befits the focus of the idea, though there will be opportunities outside the group on occasion as well.

STORY & FLUFF
Backdrop (Canon material)
When the last king of Galifar, Jarot ir'Wynarn was on his deathbed, he named his daughter Mishann of Cyre as heir to kingdom in tradition established by prior monarchs, confirming succession by the eldest child of the reigning monarch.  However, once the king had passed away, the claim was disputed by Mishann's younger brother, Prince Thalin of Thrane, who was supported by two other members of the royal family, Prince Kaius of Karrnath and Princess Wroann of Breland.  Only Prince Wrogar of Aundair supported Mishann, having been the only sibling present at Jarot's side to swear an oath to support his sister when the ageing monarch passed away.  From these divisive roots, the Last War commence in 894 KY, with each royal scion declaring themselves king or queen of their respective territories.

Mishann was later assassinated in 908 KY by the Order of the Emerald Claw, a group then under the sanction of the crown of Karrnath.  Wrogar would later die under suspicious circumstances during a hunting trip in the Eldeen Reaches in 920 YK, though foul play was never proved.

The war raged on, finally culminating in the magical devastation of Cyre in 994 YK into the Mournland, leading to the Treaty of Thronehold in 996 KY that divided the Galifar into the five nations of Aundair, Breland, Cyre, Karrnath, and Thrane, as well as a number of former vassals now sovereign.  Though an accord was reached, many feel that until one nation defeats the others and claims the throne of the ancient Kingdom of Galifar, there will never be a true and lasting peace.

Premise (Non-canon)
At the onset of the Last War, by virtue of Wrogar's support of Mishann, the two siblings remained steadfast allies, and, as the war escalated in cruelty and isolation, they became more.  The relationship was kept secret, though it yielded scions.  Unlike those born from the necessity of political marriages of their parents, they remained the favorites.  With the death of both parents, as well as a string of other political assassinations made at the time to drive a wedge between Aundair and Cyre, the siblings fled.  Ironically, it was this exodus that alerted enemies to their existence (though their exact identity remained unknown) and whose pursuit kept them on the move, becoming close and self reliant on each other.

Privy to a lot of secrets, they operated as a clannish cabal, stealing war time secrets and advances, whilst eliminating those who came too close to discovering their true identity.  Among the secrets acquired was the research that House Valadis was undertaking to create superior magebred humans.  This led the clan to further choose mates among family as they used the concept enhancement techniques to eliminate the negative effects of inbreeding whilst maintaining and enhancing the bloodline of Galifar in purity.

With the Treaty of Thronehold signed, the clan broke into family cells, dispersing across the five nations to see what place could be had for them in the world.  After nearly a year, the various cells began to lose contact with one another, and it became clear that they were being hunted once again.  After an ambush by unknown assailants, only one unit managed to escape into shadowy forests of the Eldeen Reaches, where they have been hiding for over a year.

ADDITIONAL INFO

  • As far as they know, only clan members should know of the actual line of descent.  They maintain mundane cover identities among outsiders.  The jury is still out as to whether whoever/whatever is currently threatening them knows who they actually are.

  • Since they trace themselves back to Galifar, all clan members identify to the surname of ir'Wynarn (same surname as the present monarchs of the Five Nations).  Publicly, they adopt other family names to help mingle in; these family names sort of become identifiers to the various branches of the family.

  • Prior to hiding out in the Eldeen Reaches, the whole clan was living normal lives (or at least as normal as can be for cabal) all over the continent.  They usually aimed at getting positions in governments or strategically important positions that could be used to the advantage of the clan.  Overall, political control of the continent has been their policy, with the idea to eventually steer things to a reborn Kingdom of Galifar once again, with them in charge.  Generally, there has been some paranoia about invasions from the dragons of Argonessen or the Inspired of Sarlona; the current fractured state of politics on Khorvaire could see that everything is swept away in the event of invasion by a superior united foe, which would complete erase the accomplishments of Galifar.

    • In an ironic turn, whilst the clan fears invasion by the Inspired of Sarlona, the magebreeding techniques they have use to preserve and enhance the clan's bloodline, is fairly similar to how the Quorri bred the Inspired.  Virtually all the clan members today have elven and fiendish strains as part of their genetic makeup.

  • At this point in time, they're sort of like a backwoods family, living like hermits for the last year.  They possess several resources above what normal people would have, the most important of which is an elemental skiff (aka, small flying boat) which was sort of a base of operations, though grounded.  A bit like this, minus the propellers, with the elemental fire located near the rear (when it still worked).

    • My idea for the airship is that its a prototype ship, developed for use during the Last War by House Lyrandar, for use as a scout and quick strikes.  Agents of the clan stole the secrets and spent the last 10 years developing it for their own use.  This airship was the reason this branch of the family managed to escape so quickly, though it took damage in the escape and they eventually had to crash land in the Eldeen Reaches.  Getting the ship back to form (or at least mobile) will probably constitute the first major quest for the game.

BUILD GUIDELINES
Race: Human Variant

  • Ascendant: Magebreeding inserts desired genetic traits into members of the family.  Choose one race from among: Elf (one subtype), Dragonborn, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, or Tiefling.  Your PC counts as both Human and that race for the purpose of choosing feats.  Improvements to magebreeding may yield further benefits, derived the chosen ascendant race.
Ability Scores: 27 points-buy.  As per human variant, they gain a +1 bonus to two ability scores of your choice.  Furthermore, magebreeding grants a +2 bonus to any one ability score of your choice (which must not be one that gained a +1 racial bonus)
Starting Level: 5th for the Mother; 3rd for all others
Class & Archetype: Any official (non-Unearthed Arcana)
Alignment: Any
Equipment/Wealth: Starting equipment purchased.  Maximum wealth of PC's starting class.
Background: Any official (non-Unearthed Arcana)

Backstory:  Some things to consider for the write-up:

  • The Last War is only two years over; what was your character doing during that time?
  • What was he/she doing during the last two years of peace?  This should be something do with furthering the family's interests.
  • Which of the Four Nations (Aundair, Breland, Karnath, or Thrane) does your PC hate the most, and why?
  • A secret trauma* they have.

Hello

QuoteIf it goes ahead, I'll quite likely use the D&D 5e system to play it by, though I'm not completely ruling out freeform play.

1/ 3 players to recruit.
2/ Did you oppose to the pathfinder system ?
QuoteI also have an interest breeding/impreg for rebuilding the clan over the course of the story.
I have an idea for the breeding with this system.
3/ What level to begin ?

Drowdeviant

Interested as a daughter, son or the mother, whatever people don't want. xD

  • Correct.  If there is more than 1 person for a role, I'll choose between those who, I think, fit it best.
  • I'd prefer to use 5e to keep my GM duties easier.
  • Likely 3rd or 4th level.  I'm thinking of allowing the mother PC at 5th, but that's not a confirmed idea.

Stendarr

I'm interested and not particular about what character I play. 5e sounds fun.

Brittlby

I wants in! n_n It seems like everyone else, I’m pretty open! Would prefer 5th Ed and definitely prefer playing the mother!

Mechanically, she’d be a Corrupted Paladin (Paladin/Warlock multiclass), and would play very much like one, insofar as she remembers the stories and old ideals of Galifar but over time it’s become obvious that living them is nearly impossible. It’s easier by far to simply promote a FACADE of austerity and poise while making no allowance for morals if they stand in the way of power and the bloodline.

Thank you to all for the resurgence in interest!  With the number of players, I suppose I can move ahead with the idea.  Thus far, we seem to have:

Brittlby - Mother
Snake - Son
nomadsoul [self] - Son
Stendarr - Daughter
Drowdeviant - Any
Waldham - ?

One thing I'd like to add is that I'm not 100% comfortable with playing a character in a game I'm GMing, so I would be appreciative if the players involved can throw in their own concepts for side-stories and quests (just to help make it an "everyone's game" sort of thing, rather than a story I want to play with others tagging along!)

If anyone has questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them.

Damn, seems like this game filled up quick. Ah well, I'll keep my eye on it.

Nothing taken yet, so you're always free to post up concepts.

Finally, I've updated the opening post with additional information.

Brittlby

For the concept I’m currently putting together, leaning heavily on disguise and deception via Actors feat and Mask of Many Faces coupled with Charlatan background for disguise proficiency and document forgery.

Prior to running the mother was a Couturière and salon owner to the noble and wealthy elite, and in this fashion gained the ear of many powerful women and the wives/mistresses of powerful men. With her staff (and herself in disguise) moonlighting as escorts amongst the court, coupled with her ability to mimic spouses, mistresses, etc, she had unfettered access one way or another to most nobles bedchambers and studies. Despite her martial and arcane skills, poison, blackmail and simple manipulation remained her most frequently used weapons.

After the escape, she has utilized her abilities as a scout and for resource gathering as she can still readily blend in as another face in the crowd or beguile as the prettiest face in the room.

(Still playing with names as she’d probably have a great many. When she was a couturiere, she went by Millicent Stokes.)

That’s where I’m at roughly if it helps anyone!

Mmm, I'm not too terribly fond of forcing out other people for spots. But, I'll read up on 5e and see what I might come up with. Maybe I'll go Wizard or Druid, I do like my casters...

I have an idea for a possible sage hexlock.

That might make sense. I was going Paladin or Fighter/Hexlock so it would stand to reason as they’re family. Lol

An academic that stumbles across forbidden lore on black Razor (or whatever functions as the patron for hexblades in Eberron. I'm not 100% familiar with it but it's 5e so it's easy enough to work with)

Same as noted, which would be the Shadowfell, which in Eberron is named Dolurrh (the Realm of the Dead).  He's probably managed to make contact with some fell entity that resides there, based off studies and rituals learned.

Snake

That works for me. I'll see if I can work up a character sheet or something as a prelim.

nomadsoul

I'm hoping for about 2 posts a weeks per player, with allowances for RL.

Stendarr

What are the rules for character building as far as mechanical things go? I think I might like the idea of being at different levels. I wouldn't mind being lower than the others. It could bring some interesting aspects. What level are we going to be at anyway?

I had a couple ideas for my character as the daughter and I'd like to hear what everyone thinks.

The first idea was a protective older sister. I probably play a life domain cleric. Also maybe some hints of healslut in there.

The other idea was a younger sister who greatly looks up to her older brothers. She's small, cute, and sneaky. Some combination of ranger, rogue, and/or scout fighter.

Okay, first off, I've updated the opening post with the building guidelines!

I've set the starting level for anyone who isn't the mother to be at 3rd level.  Though not entirely advisable, if you'd like to start lower, I'd be okay with that and will see if anything can be done to help out a little bit there.

The cleric would certainly be welcome, as I think it ads a spiritual aspect to an initiative that is very much grounded in realism.  And I do have a slight bias there for an older heal slut, lol.

Instead of taking one of the aforementioned as a secondary race can I do Protector Aasimar? I pretty much just want Healing Hands and maybe Radiant Soul as racial traits.
