The wasteland.

A desolate place darkened by the shadows of a dead civilization.

There are no heroes; only survivors.

Story: It has been many decades since the winds of the apocalypse blew in over America and took the old world with it, leaving only the Wasteland in its place. The event, known as "The Great War", was the culmination of a long and bloody struggle between USA and China over the last oil in the world. It came in the form of a massive global nuclear attack, which in two hours bathed the Earth in fire and radiation and ended all human civilization. But the human race is stubborn, and not so easily eradicated, and now small societies are starting to pop up all over the North American mainland.

It is 2281, over two hundred years after nuclear fire erased most of humanity. The wasteland is far from civilized, but pockets of humanity begin to thrive now and trade routes are well established across the country. One of the largest trade companies is The Crimson Caravan, but this story isn't about them. It's about a tiny competitor. It's about the Happy Trails Caravan Company.

Humanity survived the apocalypse in part thanks to the vaults. A Vault is a type of subterranean installation initially designed by the Vault-Tec Corporation, later constructed in collaboration with RobCo Industries. Officially, they were designed for the sole purpose of sheltering up to one thousand individuals in the event of a nuclear holocaust; however, in reality, they were part of a series of secret experiments orchestrated by the United States government. Well over a hundred vaults were built, but only seventeen of them were designed to function to their intended purpose. The rest were twisted social experiments designed to test the limits of humanity and aid the government in building America again.

When a new vault entrance is discovered after a rockslide reveals a cave mouth, the Happy Trails Caravan company aims to be the first in to loot pre-war goods and technology. To that end, they hire a small team of mercenaries to go in first and clear away any dangers. That's where you come in. But is this a safe vault or no? The odds are not in your favor. Will there be survivors inside, or some kind of monsters? Will it be paradise, or hell on earth?

Only one way to find out...

Game: Here's where we come in! This will be a story focused game, so don't expect any smut. This is about adventure and action. As is common for games in the Fallout universe you can expect loads of violence, twisted experiments, and terrifying 50's-era Americana. This game will be played in the Extreme section. Your character will be a mercenary hired by the Happy Trails Caravan Company, a trading company looking to bolster their books by looting an old vault. Knowledge of the Fallout series is not completely mandatory, but will be helpful. This game will be freeform, but as part of the character creation process I plan on having everyone include their character's 'SPECIAL' (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck) stats to help me make some calls on weather actions succeed or not.  If there's enough interest in this concept, I'll post up a character sheet.

As always, I welcome any and all questions!

Am I to assume that there isn't a ban on smut, but that there won't be specific accommodations for it? I've always thought that the Fallout series has  been missing one of the most obvious consequences of the breaking down of civilization: rape. Artistically I disagree with the choice to leave it out entirely, though it's obvious that the industry Fallout is in prohibits it. Of course, rape-oriented sports competitions and mutants needing to mate with human females would obviously be deliberate forcing of smut into the story, but I'm assuming a proportionate amount of sexual content at natural post-apocalyptic levels is fine. Correct me if I'm wrong. Either way, I'm interested. How soon can we expect character guidelines and some more game info?

I'm interested in this.  ;D

I'm always a sucker for anything in the fallout universe.

MissFire

There won't be much of a chance for sex, really. Besides, I want to focus on exploration and action. There are plenty of other games here with smut ( I just posted one! ) as well. Expect to see a character creation sheet late this evening!

How much control will we have over our characters backstory?

Example: Can we make up a tribe in order to say our character is the offspring of an NCR settler and a tribal woman?

rikka

I can see a lot of possibilities for a back story.

Legion defectors to NCR way of life, ex-Brother or ex-Enclave, civilization-seeking tribals, etc,

What about a dog character? :P

Skills: (What is your character good at? Pick at least one thing but no more than three!)

SPECIAL is the Fallout way of measuring your character's ability. Each character starts with 5 in every stat and gets 5 more to distribute, for a grand total of 40 points. You can add or subtract points as you like, so long as it all adds up to 40. For our purposes, I'm just using them to make some decisions regarding events in the game. For example, if a character with low Agility tries to make some quick and daring manuvers, he or she might fail! Here are the stats in order;

-Strength determines melee ability, melee damage, and carry weight.
-Perception determines how far away a character can sense danger. It's your ability to notice things happening around you.
-Endurance determines overall health as well as factoring in to your ability to wield large weapons (rocket launchers, miniguns, etc.) and resist radiation.
-Charisma determines how charming a character is, or appears to be.
-Intelligence determines how smart a character is and affects their skill with science, repair and medicine.
-Agility determines how fast your character is, as well as skill with sneaking and firearms.
-Luck determines how lucky a character is - or isn't.

Race is pretty open, more or less. Basically, you can be whatever you want as long as it's humanoid and something someone would hire for mercenary work. So, no dogs, no super mutants, no anthropomorphic talking raccoons. Let's check it out;

Humans are pretty bog standard, but can have a wide variety of backgrounds. They can be a former vault dweller, a wastelander, an ex-raider, NCR, ex-Legion, Brotherhood of Steel member, ex-slave, etc. Lots of choices here!

Ghouls are irradiated humans. They've taken so much radiation they've pretty much become zombie-like in appearance. The radiation can eat away at the brain and turn them feral, but many ghouls are basically just normal people... sans skin. The ghoulification has given them radiation resistance and long life, though. Many ghouls have been alive since even before the Great War! Humans tend to look down upon ghouls, however.

As far as 'other' goes, just follow the guidelines above but.. it's pretty wide open. Ask yourself, "Can it pass for human?" and if the answer is yes, then I'll probably give it the okay. For example, you could play an android! There's precedent in the series, in the quest 'The Replicated Man'. It features an android that is so human even IT doesn't know it's a robot. Or how about an experiment from the Big MT? Perhaps a human who's halfway between the ghoul and human states of being?

Name: Megan Smith.
Age: 21.

Hometown: Goodsprings

S: 4

A: 5

Background: Megan is the daughter of an NCR Settler and a tribal woman. Her father was just a farmer who set up shop near Goodsprings and while exploring his land was one day, was jumped by an injured tribal woman who put her knife to his throat but soon passed out. Her name translated to "Eats Nightstalker eggs" and She came from an almost Amazonian like tribe called "The Painted Ladies" Since all of them wore War Paint constantly upon their faces. Their tribe had been nearly wiped out by Caesar's Legion as they expanded and absorbed anything in their path.

Megan's father cared for the woman and helped her get back to health. With nowhere else to go the tribal stayed on the farm and after a year together they got married and eventually made Megan, raising her with knowledge from both walks of life with the ways of the civilized man such as reading and writing, firearms. And the way of the tribal, stalking the land and living off of it. She was even taught several traditions by her mother, some her father approved of and others he did not, especially when it involved Megan killing a neighbor's big horner and bringing the horns back in the middle of the night.

Megan loved both her parents and had as best a relationship with both of them as she could, thinking that all children were like her and all parents were like hers. But like many youths of the wasteland, Megan wanted adventure. But adventuring costs money, which a farming family could not provide her with. So for a time Megan worked with the Silver Rush company and found a deep love of energy weapons, saving as much money as she could during her time with the Silver Rush to buy and modify her own laser rifle.

After she heard that the Happy Trails Caravan wanted to hire mercs for a job, Megan resigned form the Silver Rush and told her parents she was going to explore a vault, to which they were actually happier, thinking she would be safer exploring an old decrepit vault than with working with criminals like the Van Graffs.

Equipment: -Modified Laser Rifle with a scope, a single action .357 revolver and her mother's knife (the one she almost killed her father with.) For clothing she has Leather Armor, a pair of biker goggles to prevent shrapnel or other things hitting  her eyes and a backpack with her ammo and supplies.

Skills:

1: Energy Weapons: Her short time working for the Silver Rush had given her a love for energy weapons, especially of the laser variety and whiel she only worked for them for around three months she still loved and learned all she could about energy weapons to the point she handles them like a pro and can repair them by memory, even if she doesn't understand fully the hows of the technology.

2: Survival: AS a girl Megan's mother taught her the ways of the tribals, making their own medicines, searching for food in the wastes and other such important skills that the pampered 'civilized' people of the wastes knew little of. Its also how she is able to craft her own make up and 'War paint' similar to what her mother did.

(if there are any changes you think I need to make/things to expand upon just let me know.)

What's the year and location? If I'm not mistaken, some places in the Fallout universe would be destroyed/abandoned or not even established yet depending on the year. If the setting it something far removed from other Fallout settings, it might not matter much, however. Should I invent a home setting to avoid damaging continuity?
O/O

Lustful Bride

Actually yeah BeeJay has abit of a point. Wil the games matter or are we sort of in our own private continuity?

Also Will we get Perks along the way?

MissFire

The game is set around the time of New Vegas, hence the 2281 start date. It takes place within that 'game map' so expect a familiar locale or two. No perks - at least not yet. If we finish this lil' episode maybe we can advance everyone a bit.

Okay, thank you for the clarification.  ;D

Name: Kain

Sex: Male

Hometown: None (wanders)

P: 5
E: 6
C: 4

A: 8
L: 7

Background: Part of a raider gang, Kain knew and did it all: raping, looting, murdering, and even acts of cannibalism. All that changed when his group was wiped out to the last man by the Legion.  Kain was the (un)lucky one, and was left crucified in the middle of the wasteland. He was rescued and nursed back to health by a passing New Canaanite missionary, who also tried instilling the teachings of his religion to the then pitiful raider. While it did not make him into a true believer, the Canaanite’s acts of kindness had some profound effect on Kain – he did not get to eat his rescuer and even showed some form of gratitude for his second life.

During their travels the Canaanite taught Kain of the precepts of civilization, and the right way on how to treat a fellow man.  He eventually brought Kain to the New Canaanite’s Shady Sand's branch, in the New California Republic, there to find shelter and work.

Kain became a caravan guard for the New Canaanites, and when things were turning right for the ex-raider, disaster struck.  The caravan Kain escorted was attacked by a large war band of Cesar’s Legion.  They were outnumbered three to one, but the New Canaanites fought back fiercely and bravely, taking down as many of the Roman-freaks with them as their numbers drastically fell. When it was over, only Kain survived. Among the dead was the New Canaanite that saved Kain in the first place. After burying the bodies, Kain took some of dead's personal effects, and delivered them to New Canaan, in Ogden (before its destruction).  After that, he severed his ties the New Canaanites, and struck out on his own.

Kain has not completely eased his raider way of thinking, which much evident in his boorish nature.  But is now tempered, thanks to the teaching of the New Canaanites and to the exposure of civilized way of living.

Equipment: Leather armor, Chinese assault rifle, 2 extra mags, 2 grenades, combat knife

Skills: Guns, Unarmed
Whatever the outcome, it's on you.

Since we are working for the Happy Trails Caravans and have a character whose story mentiones the New Cannanites, what if a following episode is set in the Honest Hearts story? We could put our own spin on the DLCs and such.

Just a suggestion.   :-)

Name: Sarah "Whiskey" Sauer
Age: 24
Sex: Female
Height: Average
Weight: Athletic
Race: Human
Hometown: Big MT

S: 8
P: 6
E: 5
C: 3
I: 8
A: 7
L: 3

Background: Sarah's first memories were of waking up on an operating table and screaming. Her spine and heart had been replaced with advanced technologies by the scientific minds of Big MT, but at some point during the marathon of surgery whatever had knocked her out wore off. After nearly killing a floating brain in a jar that kept reffering to her as a 'teddy bear', Sarah made good her escape from what she soon discovered was the Think Tank, a collection of pre-war scientists that transferred their brains into robotic bodies in order to continue their research long after the bombs had dropped. The only clue she had to her identity were the dog tags she was wearing. After slaughtering more robotic scorpions, lobotomized humans, and nightstalkers than she cares to discuss, she made her escape via an old train tunnel.

She won't lie, the enhancements have done her quite a bit of good, but she wishes she could remember who she was. She survived in the wastes by joining Talon Company, a mercenary band renowned for putting loot and caps ahead of everything else. Now, Sarah's no saint but even she has her limits and it didn't take long for her to get disgusted with their antics. One day, after leaving on a bounty with her group she allowed herself to fall a few paces back behind the others and then opened fire. After setting up the scene to look like a super mutant attack, she made her escape.

She still needs caps, though, so when she saw the Happy Trails Caravan Company hiring, she took the posting.

Sarah's got skill with a gun, though she doesn't remember where it came from. Time with Talon Company further forged her skills with shooting and explosives. She's also much smarter than she looks, though she's not sure if that's natural or due to the experiments she underwent in Big MT. She uses the odd juxtaposition of her intellect and outward appearance to fool others into thinking she's dumber than she really is.

Equipment:
-Lucille: A customized combat shotgun fine-tuned for a tighter pellet spread. Sarah's primary weapon. Sturdy and reliable.

-Clementine: A customized .223 pistol with motorized cylinder and crane for fast shooting. Sarah keeps it as a sidearm in case of emergencies. She only uses high quality armor-piercing rounds in this weapon, making it very expensive to fire.

-SWAT Armor: A ballistic vest scavenged from some old ruins. Light but sturdy, good at stopping small arms fire. Lots of pockets.

-Ballistic Mask: Think a hockey mask made of steel and you're about there. Scavenged from the same place she got her SWAT gear. Great for getting shot in the head and not having one's cranium turn to a fine red mist.

Skills: Guns, Explosives, Science

Background:
Christian was born in a small town named Twilight Star. From his childhood he was interested in any kind of technology. Lucky for Christian Twilight Star was founded just about two hours from a ruined city. Most of the people of Twilight Star were scavengers, who went to the ruined city and brought back anything what has a value.
From a young age of 12 Christian frequently accompany his father on his trips to the city. But Chris not just wanted to find valuable items but to make them work. Mostly he figured out things on his own since there wasn’t anybody who could teach him. At the age of 20 he was a good technician and became a big help of the city.
Twilight Star flourished and more and more people settle down. Of course the town’s wealth didn’t remained unnoticed. Raiders began to attack the town. The townsfolk tried to resist but it was futile. The raiders took what they worked so hard and killed many of them.
At that point the leaders of Twilight Star started to pondering the idea, they had to leave the area. But a day before they could make the decision something unexpected happened. A vehicle, a functioning vehicle arrived in the town. They were members of the Brotherhood of Steel. They made the deal with leaders. They ensure the protection of the town for exchange supply and fresh recruits.
Amazingly the Brotherhood kept his word and not just defended the town but also wiped the raiders out of the area. It was time for Twilight Star to keep up bargain. Christian was the first ones who joined the Brotherhood. His parents and the leaders didn’t like the idea, because he was a fine technician. However Christian couldn’t be happier because he knew he had the opportunity to work and to know the most advanced technology in the wasteland.
He learned much at the Brotherhood. But maybe the most important knowledge he acquired the ability of reading. He also learned how two drive various vehicles and of course how to repair them. They also taught him how to fight, because no member of the Brotherhood could be lack of fighting skills.
As time passed he became a leader of a squad. They completed a few successful missions. Then trouble struck again. After a mission on their way home to the bunker Super mutants attacked them. They caught them by surprise. Three men of his team had died the rest were injured. There was no way to save their equipment and the humvee so as the leader he decided to destroy it. So the mutants couldn’t use it either.
They managed to reach the bunker, however the general who was in charge in the bunker was very displeased with his performance. The Brotherhood examined what happened and they decided it was Christian fault. He was the leader and on top of that he drove the car. The rules of the Brotherhood of Steel were very strict. It helped a little that Christian destroyed the humvee and probably this act saved him from execution. However just throwing him out wasn’t a good idea because he still was one of best technician. So the general decided he make an example out of him.
At sunrise in front of the whole bunker they told the charges against Christian, then they burned a sign on his left scapula with an incandescent iron. Then they placed him one of the Brotherhood’s labour camps. It was the Brotherhood terminology to salves. However in these camps were raiders, bandits and other defeated enemies of the Brotherhood. Because of it they made his life a hell. Every day they beat Christian and he was frequent guest in the infirmary.
But after two months of endurance and planning he managed to escape from the camp and left the area. He knew very well he can’t return to his home because the Brotherhood would look him for there first. So he started wander in the wasteland. He accepted any kind of work. Mostly he helped towns and cities to repair whatever was needed. Of course he avoiding any kind of contact to the Brotherhood.
