QuoteA two-year-old girl has become the youngest member of Mensa.

Tests put the IQ of Elise Tan-Roberts at 156 - two points above Carol Vorderman, reports The Sun.

Elise started speaking at five months, walking at eight and running at ten.

By 14 months she could count to ten and can now recite the names of the world's capital cities.

Parents Louise and Edward, from Edmonton, North London, took her to specialist education psychologist Professor Joan Freeman.

She said she was "gifted" with a "superb memory" - and put her forward to Mensa.

Mr Tan-Roberts, 34, said: "We hope she can keep learning at an advanced pace. But she is still my baby. I just want her to be happy and enjoy herself."

O_O

*Feels awkwardly stupid in comparison*

I feel sorry for her, i dont think she will be able to experience the same kind of childhood that most children does. not the same way that is.

Do not envy her the slightest. I hope the parents know the difference between being smart and being mature.
If you're searching the lines for a point, well you've probably missed it; there was never anything there in the first place.

Agreed. Id envy her memory once i turn 23 or something, to have it for use there but otherwise it's just sad.

I do feel a little sorry for her. I doubt any school around her will be able to give her the stimulation that she will need or challenge that she will need to not get bored with school...Sometimes it's the parents that say 'we just want our child to be happy' that push their children the hardest. The fact that they know how high her IQ is might make them want to push her more. They've already stated that they want to get her in school already.

Might just want to give her private tutoring. She'll be eaten alive by private and public school systems.

*nods*

I will say that she can live a happy life. The fact that she is overly smart for her age doesn't have to hinder her. But public school or private school would be hard to deal with. I could see her getting very frustrated and bored with her class mates because they are behind her and taking longer than her to catch onto something that she got right away.

I'm sure in a regular school system she would be bullied quite a bit. But that doesn't mean that she has to let her intelligence rule her life. She can still be a happy girl with loving parents and friends.

It's not her letting her intelligence rule her life it's the kids she shows up (Albeit unintentionally) day in and day out by being so smart that will let her intelligence rule her life.

Also, i think she would get bullied.. ALOT.

And how many people here do you think got bullied a lot? Really, her intelligence isn't going to make it worse for her, in that regard, that's just going to be the excuse that the other kids use, instead of her name, or her glasses, or her personality, or her parents, etc. etc.

Actually it probably would make it worse. The older children would not like to be shown up by someone they consider a snot nosed brat.

Who the hell is Carol Vorderman? I had to Wiki her to see and I still don't care. Compare the kid to someone everyone's heard of, like Stephen Hawking.

Oniya

I found it interesting that her Wiki didn't mention whether she was a member of MENSA, and that the second site that came up on Google was a 'shrine to Carol's bum'.   :P

As for the little girl, there are two main ways that the super-intelligent get through U.S. public school, really.  One is they get advanced beyond their peers, which may expose her to more interesting subjects, but still tends to alienate them, even if it's part of a group effort like Simon's Rock or the PEG program at MBC.  Two is that they muddle through with their age-group, getting good grades without studying, but bored to tears until they hit a point where they need to study - and since they haven't had to, they don't have those skills.

I hope her parents realize this, and don't simply hold her up like some side-show exhibit.

I have no clue who Carol Vorderman is either. >.< That's just who they apparently compared her to. I was too lazy to try and find a better comparison of my own and just used the one the article used.

Isn't that sort of the definition of "worse for her"?

Depends on if you mean worse than it could possibly be, or worse than most other children experience.

Bullies, by definition, will bully others.  It doesn't matter if the reason is intelligence, size, a physical or mental handicap, or something as trivial as hair color.  If she was of average intelligence, there is still a chance that bullies would latch onto something as a 'reason' to bully her.
