Skype problems!

I read some of the solutions for Skype on Windows 7 64-bit on a tech support site for Skype and so I downloaded the older version 6.1 instead.  But whenever I log in it still freezes up my volume function and computer, I get no sound from anything on my computer so I have to restart but nothing works!
