Thanks for the correction, haven't seen the new rules as I don't really find Fantasy interesting, the lore I like, the game, not so much

They were an improvement and, as things stand, there's no armies that are ridiculously overpowered. The old Daemon's of Chaos book was the equivalent in crunch to what Draigo is to fluff; once they came out and people started to realise how impressive they were it was hard to find any tournaments that weren't dominated by Daemons. Most impressive/depressing was the fact that it wasn't just a single build... there were at least two radically different builds that could easily dominate pretty much everything any other race could throw at them.

Your army can basically be broken into three parts; characters, squads and vehicles (there can be some crossover but that's over-complicating things for this purpose). Characters and vehicles move independently but while squads as a whole move independently, the individual members of a squad have to stick together.

To take the Sister's of Battle, the Cannoness is a character and as such can move independently of the rest of the army. Your Immolator is a vehicle and can thus move independently as well. But your groups of "grunt" battle sisters are a squad. While the squad as a whole can move independently, each individual member of the squad has to remain in close proximity to the others.

Thanks! And how big do the squads need to be? 5 soldiers, 10, more? Can soldiers switch squads in battle? What happens if a players mixes the squad up by accident?

Also, I've seen commanders / HQ mentioned. How many of them need to be present on the field?

Sorry that I'm asking a lot of technical questions, but I'd like to understand the game more.

Depends on the army you're playing. Normally around 10, can be as little as 5 or as much as .. 30 or 40 (Orks and Nids)

Soldiers can't switch squads, no. They squad they're in is the squad they belong to for that battle.

Accidents happen. You correct it and play on.

Normally 1 or 2. Occasionally more.

Pretty much entirely depends on the army and then on the unit within an army. Generally the more elite the unit and army, the smaller the figures. So for example a squad of Gretchin (the 40K equivalent of Goblins) will generally be smaller than a squad of Orks which in turn will be smaller than a squad of Space Marines which in turn will be smaller than a squad of Terminators (Space Marines in huge, bulky armour). While pretty much all races have a minimum number for a squad of somewhere between 3-5 certain races are largely built around having huge units; Orks are an obvious example, as are Tyranids. Others have far fewer (with the Grey Knights probably being the smallest army with regards to numbers)

No.

I honestly can't recall this happening in all the games I've played. Partially that's because squads are normally kept fairly seperate and partially because in most cases where it could happen it doesn't matter. Say I've got two squads of seven Space Marines, each squad containing a sergeant, heavy weapon guy and five generic troops with identical equipment. If I put one another sergeant or heavy weapon guy into the other squad by accident it's immediately apparent and easy to fix. If I switch one of the generic troops then it doesn't matter... they're identical.

Again, depends on the army and the size of the battle you're playing. Generally you need at least one and in smaller battles you may be restricted to one.

Beorning

Again, thanks. Oh dear, I'm so itching to play it!!!

Re: commanders. In the earlier Sisters example, is cannonness a commander?

HairyHeretic

Units in 40k are divided into a number of types in the Force Org charts.

HQ - Command units
Elites - Normally better trained and armed, better gear and/or abilities
Troops - The rank and file
Fast Attack - Faster, sometimes more lightly armed / armoured units
Heavy Support - Heavy firepower specialists

Each section will have a few different entries, and you're free to take whichever you prefer. There will be some restrictions. Minimum is 1 HQ and 2 Troops. Maximum is generally 2 HQ, 6 Troops and 3 of each of the other sections. You won't likely have the points for all of those in normal sized games.

Ooookay, one more question: painting. As there's a lot of fluff to WH40K, are there set ways to colour the miniatures? Official colour schemes people stick to etc.? Or, maybe, I could paint my Demonettes green with silver zebra stripes and no-one would bat an eye?

Oniya

Not sure if you've browsed through this site, but there were a lot of pretty pictures.

Marines tend to be fairly fixed on their colour schemes. They don't generally go for camo. Same with SoBs.

Chaos Space Marines tend to keep broadly similar armour colours, but changing them a bit isn't so unusual, especially if they're split off into individual warbands.

Eldar craftworlds and aspect shrines have colours associated with them, but you've some leeway in how you want to paint them. Same with the different deamons and Ork klans.

IG you're pretty much free to do whatever you want. Same with Tau I think.

Necrons are silverish metal, and that's pretty much it.

Tyranids come in all kinds of colour schemes.

Or in summary - GW provides a vast assortment of 'canon' color schemes...in the case of SoB, particular Orders/Monasteries have certain colors, so if your army is representative of that pre-defined faction you would use that scheme. But GW also deliberately highlights that there are many other groups not yet defined in canon, so you can create your own Order Of The Whatever and give them any color scheme you want.

Beorning

I see. I was wondering how much fun could one have with colours...

BTW. What's up with the Sororitas and white hair? Lots of them have such hair in pictures...

I figured it was archetypal purity thing.

Some of them are old though. Silver Fox type deal.
If you're searching the lines for a point, well you've probably missed it; there was never anything there in the first place.

consortium11

If I recall correctly in the fluff only one order (Martyred Lady) who make their members have white hair. I think in real world terms it's an iconic look and one that's fairly simple to paint (or at least paint on mass... far easier to do all your figures with one hair colour than a multitude) so it's sort of become ubiquitous for them.

They tell me bleach kills everything, but this is ridiculous.

Closest I ever got to playing Warhammer - and I've never seen anyone do this since - was a little WH40K Fantasy RPG someone ran on a different PbP board... oh, a long time ago now, wherein I was playing (apparently) a renegade tech-priestess. Not that she knew that, and I was playing rules-blind, so the cluelessness was not difficult to RP. She was loyal to a fault, un-socialized and really didn't 'get' people. 'Her' people, fine. She made stuff work for them, and didn't ask a lot of questions about 'why'. They put up with her eccentricities. It was fun. Mechanical dogs and all.
I believe she was eaten by a bug - there was a weapon malfunction at a bad time.

I kind of wish someone would run another game like that, but it wouldn't be the same. :/

Honestly, that character would probably fit fine into Black Crusade, Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader.

Black Crusade and Dark Heresy both crop up here, but any game I've been in has never managed to last that well unfortunately.

It's a pity, because I'd love to get one that did. I have characters for pretty much all the 40k games, bar Only War.

So, I talked to the only friend I have still contact with and he doesn't seems to be interested in getting into WH40K...

Who I am supposed to play with, then? Crapcrapcrap.

consortium11

I know you've said you're not particularly interested before but the GW stores always have games on and normally have their own mini-tournaments and the like. By playing there you'll also meet many of the other players in your area and thus can set-up games "privately" later on.

HairyHeretic

Check your local gaming stores, or your area for clubs. Universities also tend to have gaming societies. If there are other players in the area, try to find them.
