Whoever she is, it appears she knows Canis!

Jag

Is your faceclaim from The Last Kingdom (which is about the Danish invasions of Britain)? That's where I got mine from. ^_^

Slowly building the CS for her. Not sure yet on what her 'role' will be.

Primarch

Last Kingdom, yep!

Looking forward to seeing what you put together :D

Jag

I haven't actually watched it yet, but it's on my list. >.<

I don't know what her personality is like in the show, but mine plans on being a bit of a sourpuss shieldmaiden. Deemed habitually unwed (well on her way to being somewhat of a spinster). Bit of a violent streak. Womanly in dress, but manly enough in personality (and language) that people might wonder if she can piss standing up.

Jag

#29
    Done! I think. >.<

Character: Oddveig "Odd She Be" Dalgaard
Player: Jag

Role: Slovenly Spinster Shieldmaiden
Specialties:

  • Sling - Not generally a warrior's weapon, but rather the mark of a peasant. Despite this, Oddveig uses it with great proficiency and her farm worked arms give her a lot of power behind it.
  • Accuracy - What makes her so good with the Sling is ultimately her ability to hit her mark.
  • Shield & Knife - Again, more a peasant tool, but Oddveig does well getting in close with her shield and taking low hits with her knife.
  • Stature - Oddveig is not large by any means. While not a specialty due to being a physical trait, Odd has learned to use it to her advantage in a fight.

Personality:

  • Sourpuss - While she is not pessimistic, she does tend to be in a bad mood much of the time.
  • Icy - Anyone who can make Oddveig crack a smile must be a god.
  • Blunt - Odd will not mince words with anyone, which does tend to land her in bad favor of others.
  • Loyal - Despite everything, Odd has her friends/family and she has her enemies. Those around her know which category they fall into.
  • Manly - A word tossed around often when describing her by others.
  • Short & Angry - Oddveig is not afraid to bite the ankle of any man or woman who worsens her mood.

History:

  • Born in 837AD to a small farmstead. Mother died shortly after her third year and bore no other children.
  • Oddveig took the place of any sons her father lost the chance at having with few womanly influences in her life.
  • Father attempted to arrange a marriage for her when she was sixteen, but she showed up to the wedding drunk and cut her would-be-husband's arm open with a knife when they tried to haul her up to take her vows. Her father had to pay reparations for this embarrassment.
  • Vowed herself to battle after the drunkenness wore off.
  • Has never shied away from a battle and enthusiastically offers herself up at any chance to go on a raid.

Relationships/Connections:

  • Canis Goldmane allowed her on her first raid. She remains loyal to him for this, as well as several unsaid understandings.
  • Khojin is an interesting thrall. Odd doesn't entirely hate her.
  • To be completed

Additional Details:

  • Commonly states "I prefer the company of gods to stupid men" when questioned about when she may wed.
  • Also "I do piss standing up and I have better aim than you when I do it."
  • Takes any challenge someone offers seriously, even if it's not meant to be.
  • Unmarried and childless.
  • Has been deemed a flannfluga due to her refusal to marry.
[/list]

Lithium

Yooooooo~

Character: Khojin

Player: Lithium

Role: Thrall, scout, killer

Specialties:

  • Killing: Not a skill which came naturally to her, but one that she was forced to acquire and become very proficient at, even coming to enjoy it at times. Knives are her preferred tool, though she'll use anything at her disposal to get the job done.
  • Moving unseen and unheard: She doesn't have the size or the strength to take most enemies head on, but the element of surprise makes for a great equalizer.
  • Nimble: While her small stature may be a hindrance in combat, being small can have its advantages. Combined with Khojin's flexibility and quickness, it means there aren't many obstacles which she can't sneak through or climb over.
  • Tireless: She can seemingly will herself beyond the bounds of exhaustion, hunger and thirst which would impede most men, even if it might end up killing her.
  • Tough: If not a friend, pain is - at the very least - an old acquaintance of hers, so Khojin can endure more than her fair share.

Personality:

  • Savage: In many respects, Khojin behaves more like a wild animal than a woman. Her manners are nonexistent and her morals are precious few, innate instincts more than anything. Like a dog, her loyalty can be unwavering once earned, though few souls can claim to ever have managed such a feat.
  • Mistrustful: Khojin is more apt at seeing the bad in people than the good, since that's what most have in abundance from her experience. She's leery and skeptical of everyone and everything.
  • Single-minded: Good luck changing her mind after it's already been set on something.
  • Vindictive: Khojin can hold a grudge and gnaw at it like a dog would do with a bone.

History:

  • Khojin was born somewhere in western Mongolia in 841 AD, the daughter of a struggling merchant.
  • At 14, while she was helping her father peddle their goods in the city, a wealthier merchant made her father an offer, once which would keep the rest of his family fed for at least two winters.
  • As a slave, she was broken and trained before being transported west where she would fetch a higher price. She was bought by several different masters and resold after they'd grown bored of her, each time being sent further and further west.
  • Her cruelest master yet awaited in West Frankia, taking and taking from her for three interminable years. Khojin slaughtered his family in their sleep and left him alive to find the bodies when he woke.
  • She fled into the wilderness and learned how to survive, learned how to kill better, soon becoming the area's most wanted bandit and murderer while the bodies of soldiers and mercenaries sent to apprehend her continued to pile up.
  • Still working on this bit! Stuff happens and she ends up as Cannis' thrall, woooo!

Relationships/Connections:

  • T
  • B
  • D

Additional Details:

  • She can understand Norse well enough as well as speak it, albeit somewhat brokenly, though her preferred language seems to be a mixture of grunting, hissing and scowling.
  • She's about 5'2" and weighs just over 100 lbs.
  • Her back is a tapestry of crisscrossing scars.
  • She has intricate patterns tattooed over her left arm and her throat in black ink.
  • She has a small silver ring pierced through her septum.
  • Her companion, Life, is nearly as big as her, though not quite as nasty.
  • Some of the commoners in West Frankia have started telling stories of a dusky witch who swoops in to snatch misbehaving children out of their beds at night, dragging them back to her forest lair where she gorges herself on their flesh.

Kuroneko

#31
Here's my first stab. Let me know if you need any changes :-) I also have a discord.

Character: Rúna Grimsdöttir
Player: Kuroneko
Faceclaim: Charlie Murphy

Role: Völva
Specialties:

  • Spá/Prophecy -Rúna has the gift of Sight, able to divine the future through reading various signs and symbols, ritual and ceremony, including dreams.
  • Seiɗr - Rúna is able to use the Futhark and other methods to perform oracular divinations for individuals and groups with uncanny accuracy.
  • Galdr - Rúna has learned the traditional singing incantations and verses of the Völva.
  • Throwing Knives - Originally engaged in training as a shieldmaiden until she was chosen as an apprentice by the Völva of her clan, Rúna has retained and perfected her skill with throwing knives and always keeps several on her person. She has deadly accuracy with these hidden weapons and can hit her mark with most thrown items, be it axe, bottle or drinking horn.
  • Staff - Rúna carries the wand/staff of her profession, and is skilled in its use as a defensive weapon as well as a magical instrument.
  • Can read and write Norse and some Saxon English - She learned to read and write Norse from her mentor, and learned to read and write bits and pieces of Saxon English from a captured priest while in the company of a minor northern chieftain and his people. She finds the language harsh and boring.

Personality:

  • Disciplined – Practicing seiɗr and galdr takes practice and painstakingly methodical action. Rúna is committed to ritual work and has the mindset for divination and other ceremonial tasks.
  • Patient - Rúna takes her time, waiting for the Gods to make their will known. Ceremony also requires time; she knows not to push the river.
  • Mysterious - She has visions. They can happen at any time and from time to time, they come true. It can be … unsettling.
  • Caring - Rúna sympathizes with the people for whom she delivers prophecies and divinations and cares about how her messages will be received.
  • Selfless - Rúna has dedicated her life in service of the Gods. She goes where They will and does what They ask.
  • Observant - She sees small details and how they relate to the larger whole. Combined with her abilities this makes her a good reader of people.

History:

  • Born in 836 in a small mountain village near Flam. She has six older brothers. Her mother was also a seventh child.
  • Originally began to train in combat to become a shieldmaiden, until the local völva chose her as an apprentice at the age of ten, when she discovered Rúna was having prophetic dreams.
  • She traveled extensively with her mentor until her initiation at the age of twenty two. Has continued to travel on her own from village to village after becoming a full Völva in her own right.
  • Dreams and visions brought Rúna to Kattegat after the fall of Ragnar, to confirm his death and see what the Gods had wrought, and who would rise in his place. Visions and dreams have kept her in the area ever since.

Relationships/Connections:

  • TBA
  • TBA
  • TBA

Additional Details:

  • Has never married, but is far from celibate.
  • While Rúna does not actively seek battle, she won’t shy away from it, especially if signs point to her participation or the Gods will it. She works best in a stealth capacity or like a druid, working to curse the enemy and pick off forces or wounded one by one.
  • Knows specific herbalism to brew the infusions necessary to induce trance and visions.
  • Has a fine, melodic singing voice
  • Hands, arms and body are tattooed in bindrunes and ritual symbols from her initiation, to assist her abilities.
  • Both ears are pierced multiple times.
  • Rúna has been trained in the practice of ritual sacrifice.
  • For all intents and purposes, her function is that of a shaman.

Cold Heritage

#39
Character: Snæþór "Whitegold"
Player: Cold Heritage

Role: Berserker
Specialties:

  • Divine Fury: Snæþór does not need mushrooms or charms or any such things to enter the berserker rage, although it is not as intense as it is for those who do so through the mushroom or other rituals. Still, it is a comfort and a source of faith to the young warrior that the gods are with him.
  • Jotunblut: Some men claim descent from the gods; Ragnar claimed to be of the line of Odin. Snæþór is reputed to have the blood of giants within him, as many from Norway are; he is taller, larger, stronger, and more hale than most men.
  • Cold-blooded: The cold does not bother Snæþór as it would other men, and seeing the darkest deeds done does not unman him.
  • Scrimshaw: Snæþór is skilled at engraving upon bone; he has worked with whale bone and walrus tusks extensively and traded several pieces for many times their weight in gold.

Personality:

  • Reserved: Snæþór is a young man, with no great fame or deeds of his own, so he is not so quick to brag or boast.
  • Malleable: Snæþór is easy to persuade and susceptible to silver tongues speaking honeyed words in his ear.
  • Ambitious: The young warrior does want to prove himself, earn grand fame and wealth, have his name in the mouth of all the skalds.

History:

  • Born in northern Hålogaland some twenty years ago in 845 A.D. under a star of good omen.
  • The second son of an earl of middling wealth and modest fame; few are likely to know the man's name: Jarnkettil Wending-Ways.
  • Witnessed Jarnkettil cut the blood eagle on a child-murderer at age 6. This is the same year that Snæþór receives his first instruction in scrimshawing.
  • Snæþór has fought primarily against the Rus, and alongside them against the Pechenegs. He is on good terms with several Sami tribes, having traded scrimshawed whale bones and the horns of narwhals to them for reindeer meat and the like. Snæþór gains fame among the Rus by defeating a powerful Pecheneg war chief in battle, taking him alive, and cutting the blood eagle upon him.
  • Snæþór's father fell ill and died over a long winter; his elder brother, Hjalbjorn, was elected to succeed as earl. The two brothers were ever quarrelsome for no reason anyone, even long time friends of their father, could discern. They were merely fated to be unable to tolerate one another.
  • Snæþór left home shortly after his father's death, something Jarnkettil demanded on his deathbed, and traveled south with a trader. The young warrior intended to travel to Miklagard and serve the Greek Emperor, but Ragnar had recently died and a great army was being formed to avenge him.

Relationships/Connections:

Additional Details:

  • Snæþór's shield is painted with a white swan on one side of the boss, and a black raven upon the other.
  • He has a thick, braided arm ring made of white gold. It was a gift to him from a warlord of the Rus after Snaethor defeated and killed a powerful Pecheneg war chieftain.
  • Snæþór is just over seven feet tall.
  • Owns a cloak made from the hide of a polar bear. He killed it himself on a whaling trip that went far north.
  • Knows how to speak the tongue of the Rus and Sami.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

WaitingCynicism

#40
Character: Einarr Leifsson
Player: WaitingCynicism

Role: Raider
Specialties:

  • Riding
  • Axeplay
  • Hunting

Personality:

  • Humble
  • Kind
  • Protective

History:

  • Born on June 14, 844, Einarr lived a simple life as the son of a warrior and his wife. While his childhood was sheltered somewhat, he learned the ways of the axe and shield, of warfare and raiding. Life, while simple, consisted of almost exclusively learning martial skills and lectures on the gods, something Einarr never really preferred. He just wanted to run around with his friends.
  • It was during his teenage years that he discovered his pleasures with other men, and specifically his friend Harald. Amongst the constant talks of a raid, amongst the heavy snows and the sounds of axe against axe, the two fell in love, not caring what others thought - or what the gods would think of them.
  • Their families began to catch on to the relationship, lecturing the two men privately about how unbecoming it was of them to be in love. It made them weak and petty, like the Saxons that they were going to raid. After constant lectures, Harald and Einarr had had enough. They joined the army, and now are going to try and live in England after the war.

Cosima

#41
Character: Grethe
Player: Cosima

Role: Shieldmaiden
Specialties:

  • Spear
  • Javelin
  • Archery
  • Gaelic Warfare- Horsemanship, Tactics etc.
  • Highly Educated- Received a robust Classical education during her youth in Ireland.

Personality:

  • Direct- Grethe says what she means, and has little time or patience for people who attempt to obfuscate or hide the truth or their intent with disingenuous words. That's not to say that she has no use at all for subtlety, but given the choice tends toward straightforward honesty.
  • Ambitious- She has no use for an idle life and strives to make an impact on the world. Regardless of how she makes her name, she wants to carve out a legacy that lives long beyond her mortal years.
  • Enterprising- One can not grow up a woman in a man's world without learning how to achieve her goals through unconventional means. Through experience she has learned how to be resourceful, cunning and how to seize upon opportunities whenever she is presented with them.
  • Headstrong- The woman is stubborn. She has had it proven by experience that if she perseveres long enough, she will eventually prevail. Therefore, while she often solicits the advice of others, she knows her own mind and is only swayed away from her position by thoughtful, compelling arguments.
  • Pragmatic- Grethe is well grounded and not prone to flights of fancy. She can be practical to the point of bordering on cynicism.

History:

  • Born to a moderately influential Gaelic Chieftain in Ireland in AD 835, the middle of three children.
  • Received traditional combat and tactical training as well as an extensive Classical education during her formative years.
  • Fought in various campaigns against Viking invaders and was eventually captured in AD 855.
  • Rather than submit to slavery she attempted suicide but was prevented from doing so by her Viking captors, then taken forcibly to Norway upon the raid's conclusion.
  • Shortly after her arrival in Norway, she was presented with the choice between enslavement and marriage. She chose the latter.
  • During her marriage she assimilated into her husband's culture. With her combat expertise it was natural for her to pick up the sword and shield on behalf of her new people. She fought alongside her husband until his death in battle in AD 863.
  • With the formation of The Great Heathen Army, she decided to seek her fortune and fight in honor of her late husband.

Relationships/Connections:

Lithium

#48
Character: Elsebe the Treacherous

Player: Lithium

Role: Hjalmarä's general and confidant

Specialties:

  • Sword Combat: She's no legendary warrior, but she can handle herself well enough to make the queen break a sweat when they spar.
  • Riding: Just another one of those girls obsessed with ponies.
  • Learning: She abhors failure, and thus she studies and pushes herself almost compulsively at anything she does. She's quick to learn and adapt, rarely making mistakes at all, and never twice.
  • Military Tactics: Elsebe's true strength lies not in the sharpness of her blade, but the sharpness of her mind. Using terrain, deception and even the forces of nature themselves to her advantage, she does whatever it takes to ensure that Hjalmarä's grander plans come to fruition.

Personality:

  • Detached: While she probably does have emotions buried away somewhere beneath her dark breastplate, Elsebe hides them well. She can compartmentalize almost anything effectively, allowing her to make decisions clearly and decisively even in the heat of battle.
  • Sardonic: With a sharp wit also comes a sharp tongue, and Elsebe isn't shy about using it. No one is safe!
  • Maneater: Bringing men, powerful men in particular, down one or several notches is a guilty pleasure of hers. In the bedroom, she treats them as props meant to fulfill for own needs, taking whatever she wants before discarding them like old unwanted toys.
  • Sadistic: What? Everyone needs a hobby.

History:

  • Born in 830 AD, the daughter of a Jarl within the kingdom of Hordaland.
  • Had a relatively good education and comfortable life until her betrothal to King Aevar.
  • During the few years the marriage lasted, Elsebe was unable to conceive a child, let alone an heir. She suffered the king's displeasure in the form of increasingly violent fits of drunken rage which, at the time, she'd been convinced she deserved.
  • Aevar eventually divorced her once he set his sights and heart on some younger, more beautiful fair-haired maiden.
  • Using the assets which she got to keep after the divorce, Elsebe was able to start a successful horse breeding business in spite of being considered some sort of pariah.
  • After the king's untimely demise, the queen appointed Elsebe as general of her armies.

Relationships/Connections:

  • The Queen of Hordaland has been her only and closest friend for years. Rather than being petty and resentful after being replaced, Elsebe knew first hand that the title of queen was no necessarily one to be envied, so she actually spent the last of her empathy on the young Hjalmarä, helping her cope with her new life in whichever way she could. The pair's bond has only grown unbreakable since, as has Elsebe's respect and loyalty for her queen.

Additional Details:

  • She was Hjalmarä's accomplice in the murder of King Aevar. Some say she was the one who whispered poisoned words into the queen's ear and talked her into it, though in truth Hjalmarä hardly needed much encouragement after the death of her unborn child.
  • Elsebe's business trains stallions exclusively for the queen's cavalry. Her methods are known to be cruel and extreme, but also undeniably effective. The horses kick and bite like devils in battle, often presenting almost as much of a threat as the riders themselves.
  • She may have just as bad of a drinking problem as her former husband.
  • She owns a crossbow pistol which she pillaged from some noble's weapon collection after a raid. It's more of a novelty item than anything, realistically only able to fire once per engagement since it requires a fairly long amount of time to reload, but it's a nifty little surprise.
